- Description: The syntheses of new ball-type Co(II) phthalocyanines containing 4,4′-(9H-fluorene-9,9-diyl)diphenol substituents at non-peripheral (complex 6) and peripheral (complex 7) positions are presented. These complexes were characterized by UV–Vis, FT-IR, mass spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. Both complexes exhibit metal and ring based redox processes, typical of cobalt phthalocyanine complexes. For 6, the metal based reduction was observed at −0.46 V followed by a ring based reduction at −1.40 V. The metal oxidation for 6 was observed at +0.16 V and the ring based oxidation at +1.05 V. For 7, reductions are easier but the oxidations are more difficult. The metal based reduction for 7 was observed at −0.38 V followed by a ring based reduction at −1.03 V. The metal oxidation for 7 was observed at +0.20 V and the ring based oxidation at +1.35 V.

- Description: Mononuclear cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) substituted at the non-peripheral 8 and peripheral positions 9 with 1,1′-binaphthyl-8,8′-diol and ball-type dinuclear Co2Pc2 substituted at the non-peripheral 10 and peripheral 11 positions with the same substituent are reported. The complexes with 1,1′-binaphthol-bridges were prepared from the corresponding phthalonitriles 4–7. The effects of the position of substituent on spectral, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of these complexes were also explored. The mononuclear complexes 8 and 9 exhibited one metal reduction, one ring reduction and one ring oxidation. The redox properties of the ball-type complexes 10 and 11 exhibited two reduction processes assigned to [(CoIPc−2)2]2−/[(CoIPc−3)2]4− (I), (CoIIPc−2)2/[(CoIPc−2)2]2− (II) and one oxidation process assigned to [(CoIIIPc−2)2]2+/CoIIPc−2)2 (III). The ball-type complexes are much easier to oxidize and more difficult to reduce than the corresponding monomers 8 and 9.

- Description: This study investigates the synthesis and characterization new peripherally (β) tetra-substituted 4-(2-mercaptoquinoline phthalocyaninato) Co(II) (CoPcSHQn, 3), and 4-(2-phenoxy-4-trifluoromethylpyridine phthalocyaninato) Co(II) (CoPcOHPy, 4). These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, mass and electronic spectroscopies and electrochemical methods. Both complexes show well resolved redox peaks attributed to both ring and metal based processes. Spectroelectrochemistry was used to confirm the assignments of the redox processes. For CoPcSHQn (3): CoIPc−2/CoIPc−3 (E1/2 = −1.25 V, I), CoIIPc−2/CoIPc−2 (E1/2 = −0.57 V, II), CoIIIPc−2/CoIIPc−2 (E1/2 = +0.45 V, IV) and an irreversible process at Ep = +1.05 V vs Ag|AgCl for CoIIIPc−1/CoIIIPc−2 (V). Redox couple III at E1/2 = −0.15 V was ascribed to aggregation. In the case of CoPcOHPy (4): CoIPc−2/CoIPc−3 (E1/2 = −1.13 V, I), CoIIPc−2/CoIPc−2 (E1/2 = −0.45 V, II), CoIIIPc−2/CoIIPc−2 at E1/2 = +0.21 V (IV), and CoIIIPc−1/CoIIIPc−2 (E1/2 = +1.01 V vs Ag|AgCl, V). Again III is associated with the aggregated species. Both complexes were electrodeposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). For complex 3 self-assembled monolayers was also formed. The modified (CoPc-GCE) electrodes electrocatalytically detected L-cysteine at Ep = 0.62 V (3-GCE) and 0.59 V (4-GCE) vs Ag|AgCl.

- Description: This paper reports on the synthesis and characterization of new manganese phthalocyanine (MnPc) complexes: 2,3-octakis-[(2-mercaptopyridine) phthalocyaninato] acetato manganese (III) (1) and its quaternized (hence water soluble) derivative: 2,3-octakis-{[(N-methyl-2-mercaptopyridine) phthalocyaninato] acetato manganese (III)} sulphate (2). The complexes were used to form self assembled monolayers (SAMs). Voltammetry proved that both of the SAMs are well packed, strongly passivating and act as selective and efficient barriers to ion permeability. Furthermore, surface coverage studies confirmed that the MPc macrocycles adsorb onto the gold electrode as monolayers. Both MPc SAMs were successfully used as electrochemical sensors of nitrite.

- Description: There is a need in the global south to evaluate and implement empirically supported psychological interventions to ameliorate symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Empirically supported treatments (ESTs) have increasingly been developed and implemented, yet the majority people in the global south do not have access to these treatments for mental disorders such as PTSD. Prolonged exposure therapy has accrued substantial empirical evidence to show it as an effective treatment for PTSD. Research on the effectiveness and acceptability of prolonged exposure in a low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are sparse. This brief report presents a review of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy and its feasibility as a trauma therapy for PTSD in LMICs. First, we present a brief overview of PE as a first-line treatment for PTSD. Second, using South Africa as a case example, we present a brief overview of traumatic stress in South Africa and how mental healthcare has developed since the abolishment of apartheid in 1994. Lastly, we discuss the challenges pertaining to the dissemination and implementation of PE in LMICs and propose future perspectives regarding the implementation of ESTs such as PE in LMICs.

- Description: Observers aboard commercial trawlers collected data on the total catch composition of 614 and 479 hauls made by vessels operating off the south and west coasts of South Africa, respectively. On the south coast, four fishing areas were identified on the basis of target species and fishing depth. On the west coast, hauls were separated into those targeting hake Merluccius spp. in four depth ranges (0–300, 301–400, 401–500, and >500 m) and those targeting monkfish Lophius vomerinus. For each area, the catch composition was calculated and the species assemblages were investigated using cluster analysis and multi-dimensional scaling. Finally, for each coast, the weight of fish discarded annually was estimated. On the south coast, although hake dominated, between 21% and 47% of the catch was not hake, depending on the fishing area. In comparison, hake dominated west coast catches, the proportion of hake increasing with depth. For each fishery investigated, approximately 90% of the catch was processed and landed. However, estimates of annual discards indicate that the south and west coast fisheries may annually discard 9000 or 10,000 t and 17,000 or 25,000 t, of undersized and unutilizable fish and offal, respectively, depending on the estimation method used. When developing strategies to limit or enhance utilization of bycatch, cognisance should be taken of the differences in catch composition between the south and west coasts and of the importance of bycatch revenue to south coast fishing companies.

- Description: This article takes a critical look at the divergent approaches of courts in constructing the meaning of actual and apparent bias in adjudicative contexts. It argues that while proving actual bias on the part of an adjudicator may not always be easy and parties often revert to apprehended bias, an allegation of bias in any adjudication process is a matter that courts take very seriously. This notwithstanding, the courts have failed to consistently demarcate the necessary elements and threshold of proof that complainants must overcome to secure a successful challenge of decisions based on adjudicative impartiality. Upon critical evaluation of the decisions on the subject so far rendered, this article suggests that the pattern which has seemingly emerged is that which weighs the allegations of bias against the presumption of impartiality and the requirements of the double reasonableness test.

- Description: Union politics remain central to the new century. It remains central because of the ongoing importance of unions as mass movements, internationally, and because unions, like other popular movements, are confronted with the very real challenge of articulating an alternative, transformative vision. There is much to be learned from the historic and current tradition of anarcho-and revolutionary syndicalism.

- Description: Although management education aims to equip students with relevant knowledge, skills and competencies, making explicit and developing the cognitive thought processes necessary for management students to deal effectively with the current and future demands of the world of work, have been neglected. This article argues for the development of "complicated understanding" (Bartunek, Gordon and Weathersby 1983) in management students, through cultivating academic literacy. Using mediation, reflective inquiry and reflective writing interactively, it is illustrated how academic literacy could be promoted at the post-graduate level.

- Description: Leaders should not randomly choose a leadership style. To be effective, leaders need to ensure that their leadership style is congruent with what subordinates value. The focus of this study is on what the future South African graduate workforce will value in a leader. The female and male respondents in this study emphasise similar leadership values, indicating that there is no distinct set of competencies that will be valued separately by males and females. The same was found for respondents of different cultures, namely African, Coloured, Indian, White and other. With respect to both gender and culture, the respondents emphasise a mixture of African and Western leadership values. This supports the idea that to be effective in South Africa, leaders need to understand the prevailing national cultural values before simply applying ''foreign'' leadership models and theories based upon cultural values found in the West. This research finds that irrespective of gender and culture in the South African workplace, to be effective, leaders need to be loyal and inspirational, have vision and integrity and must be open and honest with their subordinates. Leaders should avoid being autocratic, strict, religious, ritualistic and traditional. They should also avoid using consensus and perceived external control.

- Description: Over the past few decades, it has become widely recognized that the management strategies of world fisheries must ensure sustainability of bycatch as well as of target species. South Africa implemented a pilot observer programme from 1995 to 2000 to collect data on the levels and patterns of bycatch and discards in the demersal trawl fishery. Here, the results of that programme are used in conjunction with information on bycatch value and compliance to assess the issues and problems regarding bycatch and discarding in the fishery. In general, bycatch components can be placed into one of three categories (discarded bycatch, retained bycatch, and processing waste), each of which present different management problems and require different management approaches. The results were used to formulate a bycatch management plan for the demersal trawl fishery in South Africa. Given the need to continue monitoring bycatch, the performance of the pilot observer programme is reviewed, and the levels of sampling effort required for a national programme are discussed.

- Description: The nationwide strike by 70 000 construction workers between 8 and 15 July 2009 was unprecedented and significant in several respects. This was the first national strike on 2010 World Cup sites by South African construction workers and was therefore an historic event. A second key feature of the strike was the unity displayed by workers and trade unions within a sector organised by several trade unions. Engineering and building workers came out on strike, with the Building Construction & Allied Workers Union (BCAWU) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) standing together as their representative organisations. A third feature of the strike was the widespread sympathy for it by the South African public and media. This was despite it potentially setting back progress with World Cup projects. Fourthly, the pressure placed upon the trade unions' negotiating team by the Ministry of Labour and the FIFA Local Organising Committee (LOC) proved lethal in undermining their, assisting in causing them to dilute their trade union demands and demobilising the national strike.

An Illustration of a Deductive Pattern Matching Procedure in Qualitative Leadership Research:
- Authors: Pearse, Noel
- Date: 2019

- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/149895 , vital:38911 , DOI: 10.34190/JBRM.17.3.004
- Description: Most qualitative studies in business-related research have adopted an inductive approach, in that they explore specific cases and then extract themes, or statements that are more general, from this data. This approach has its shortcomings, including not developing a more systematic body of knowledge of behavioural and social processes that take place in organisations. In contrast, in deductive qualitative research, the theoretical propositions derived from a review of the literature serve as its departure point, informing how the data is collected. Later on in the analysis of data, the researcher uses the propositions to determine if the literature explains the case that was being investigated. Unfortunately, given the relative neglect of deductive qualitative research approaches, there is little guidance and few examples offered that illustrate the application of these techniques. This poses a challenge for researchers, who often need a greater level of structure when it comes to designing and conducting their research. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to illustrate the design of a research protocol that integrates two deductive approaches that are suitable for explanatory case study research, namely deductive thematic analysis and pattern matching. This paper develops a sevenstep process that researchers can follow, for carrying out this type of deductive qualitative research. Using extracts from a research study investigating the leading of organisational change, the steps in this process are illustrated.

- Description: Using the Bondi-Sachs formalism, the problem of a gravitational wave source surrounded by a spherical dust shell is considered. Using linearized perturbation theory, the geometry is found in the regions: in the shell, exterior to the shell, and interior to the shell. It is found that the dust shell causes the gravitational wave to be modified both in magnitude and phase, but without any energy being transferred to or from the dust.

- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/149715 , vital:38877 , https://hdl.handle.net/10520/EJC-1abee09c1f
- Description: A prominent vertical dolerite dyke, up to 30 m wide and which can be traced for over 100 km, is compositionally homogeneous along much of its length and shows no evidence of flow differentiation. Associated parallel dykes are compositionally distinct and are unrelated by closed-system processes. The main dyke has geochemical characteristics of the Maloti or Senqu Units in the upper part of the main Lesotho basalt sequence, whereas the parallel dykes are geochemically similar to the lower Mafika Lisiu Unit. On the basis of size and composition the main dyke may well represent a fissure which once fed effusions of Karoo basalt.

- Description: Porphyrin-phthalocyanine nanostructures (P-PcNs) have been fabricated by electrostatic self-assembly of two oppositely charged molecules. The negatively charged molecule, meso-tetra-(4-phenylsulphonate)porphyrin (HT) and the positively charged species; {1,(4)-tetrakis-[(N-methyl(3-pyridyloxy) phthlocyaninato] chloro gallium(III)} sulphate, {2,(3)-tetrakis-[(N-methyl{(2-mercaptopyridine) phthalocyaninato} hydroxy manganese(III)} sulphate, {1,(4)-tetrakis-[(N-methyl-(3-pyridyloxy) phthalocyaninato] chloro indium(III)} sulphate, {2,3-octakis-{[(N-methyl-2-mercaptopyridine) phthalocyaninato] acetato manganese(III)} sulphate, {2,(3)-tetrakis-[(N-methyl(3-pyridyloxy) phthlocyaninato] choro gallium(III)} sulphate, {2,3-octakis-[(N-methy-3-pyridyloxy) phthalocyaninato] chloro indium(III)} sulphate, and {2,(3)-tetrakis-[(N-methyl (3-pyridyloxy) phthalocyaninato] chloro indium(III)} sulphate. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images showed that the formed nanostructures ranged from nanosheets to nanorods and nanotubes. The UV-Vis spectra confirmed that the molecules formed J-aggregates. The P-PcNs were exposed to incandescence light in the presence of platinum and gold salts. It was observed that the presence of platinum salts resulted in the destruction of the P-PcNs with possible formation of a Pt-Pc complex. While with the gold salt, the structures of P-PcNs were not only retained but were also enhanced to longer nanorods and nanofibers with the formation of gold nanoparticles.
