- Description: Factors outside the classroom can contribute to academic success as well as the achievement of important outcomes such as the appreciation of human diversity. Striving towards equality of residence life satisfaction is thus important for academic outcomes and for the development of well-functioning citizens. This study is based on the 2011 Quality of Residence Life (QoRL) Survey, conducted at a South African university, comprising roughly 2,000 respondents. The new Citadel Art Price index offered the opportunity to test this theory in the South African context. The Citadel index uses the hedonic regression method with observations drawn from the top 100, 50 and 20 artists by sales volume, giving approximately 29 503 total auction observations. The Index consists of quarterly data from the period 2000Q1 to 2013Q3. A VAR of the art price index, Johannesburg Stock Exchange all-share index, house price index, and South African government bond index were used. Flowing from the VAR results, additional analyses included variance decomposition, impulse response, and, to determine volatility, variance and standard deviation measures for each index. Results show that, when there are increased returns on the stock market in the previous period and wealth increases, there is a change in the Citadel Art Price Index in the same direction. This finding is consistent with Goetzmann et al. (2009), who reported that there is a strong relationship between art and equity markets and that art price changes are driven by capital gains and losses. No significant difference was found between the house price index and the art price index, and neither between the art and government bond price indices. Overall, the South African art market does not offer the opportunity to diversify portfolios dominated by either property, bonds, or shares.

We examined whether the proposed regulatory regime for alien and invasive species that was published by the Department of Environmental Affairs in 2014 for public comment was reasonable. The analysis produced factors that might matter in the design of reasonable institutional arrangements that impose a reasonable regulatory burden on economic sectors utilising invasive species. We conducted factor analysis using an online survey that we conducted between May and July 2014. We obtained four clusters of factors: participatory policymaking, people-centeredness, credible scientific evidence for listing species as invasive and contextualisation of international evidence. We then utilised the factors in a logistic regression framework to assess their influence on the probability of perceiving the regulations to be reasonable. The likelihood of a trout sector player perceiving the regulations to be reasonable was 1.2%. We found that a one standard deviation increase in the “credibility of scientific evidence” increased the odds of perceiving the regulations to be reasonable by 1645%. A one standard deviation increase in “participation” increased the odds of perceiving the regulations to be reasonable by 410%. A one standard deviation increase in “people-centeredness” increased the odds of perceiving the regulations to be reasonable by 600%. Lastly, a one standard deviation increase in the variable “contextualising international evidence” increased the odds of perceiving the regulations to be reasonable by 415%. This research demonstrates that properly addressing the socioeconomic aspects of new policies in addition to ecological criteria makes it far more likely that stakeholders will regard them as reasonable, even if the new policies impose increased regulatory transaction cost burden on users or reduced access to a resource.

- Description: Due to overgrazing, mining and other anthropogenic disturbances, large sections of the Karoo region have been degraded, resulting in areas with low vegetation cover, where erosion rates are high and vegetation is dominated by unpalatable species. These areas have low and unpredictable rainfall, with slow to non-existent autogenic recovery, and this often forces landowners to implement reseeding rehabilitation in an attempt to increase both overall vegetation cover and the relative abundance of palatable plants. Landowners use soil preparation treatments, which include creating micro-catchments, ripping, mulching and brush packing, to supplement land rehabilitation. This study investigated the significance of initial rainfall, mean monthly rainfall, soil preparation techniques, slope, existing vegetation cover, litter, mulch and stone cover in determining the success of reseeding rehabilitation. Rainfall had the most significant influence, where long-lived shrubs established best under low initial rainfall and high mean monthly rainfall, and grasses established best after receiving high initial rainfall. Micro-catchments proved the most successful soil preparation technique for the establishment of long-lived shrubs, while ripping and mulching impacted negatively on grass establishment. A combination of mulch and micro-catchments aided Osteospermum sinuatum establishment in soils where soil shrinkage cracks occurred. Temperature influenced seed germination and drought tolerance of Lessertia annularis, Fingerhuthia africana and O. sinuatum, with higher germination success of O. sinuatum under temperatures simulating summer, and of F. africana under temperatures simulating winter. L. annularis germination had a faster growth rate and higher survival when germinated under autumn/spring temperatures. Landowners are advised to sow seeds of more than one species during rehabilitation, to include micro-catchments as soil preparation treatment, and to sow seeds during a time when rainfall is predicted to be high.

This paper presents a preliminary WFA of South Africa (SA) based on data for the period 1996-2005. Crop production was found to contribute about 75% of the total water footprint of national production. The total water footprint of crop production is mainly composed of five crops: maize, fodder crops, sugarcane, wheat and sunflower seed, which account for 83% of the crop water footprint. The average water footprint of a South African consumer is 1 255 m3/yr, below the world average of 1 385 m3/yr, and is dominated by the consumption of meat (32%) and cereals (29%). About one fifth of this water footprint of consumption is external to SA. While SA is a net virtual water importer, the virtual water trade analysis revealed that a large share of blue water consumption is related to export. Sustainability concerns are that the major river basins face severe blue-water scarcity for extended periods of the year, and that water pollution levels related to nitrogen and phosphorus were found to be unsustainable in all river basins in SA. Efficient allocation and use of water is investigated by means of comparing the consumptive water footprint to global benchmark values, as well as the economic green- and blue-water productivity and the economic land productivity of the crops cultivated in SA. Furthermore, crops with specific potential for biofuel production are assessed. Lastly, recommendations to address the identified issues are given.

As such, this paper uses the case of an invasive alien plant (IAP) (Cylindropuntia fulgida var. fulgida (Cff)) in a rural community (Gwanda district, Zimbabwe) to unveil the conceptualisation of the natural environment from a rural African perspective. This paper discloses the environmental worldview of the community and explains the formulation of the attitudes by the local households towards species in the environment. The study uses two horizontal dimensions of environmental attitudes formulation (New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) Scale and Kellet’s (1996) classification of environmental values). Data was collected using a questionnaire survey, group discussions and key informant interviews. A sample of 156 individuals comprised the study respondents. Results showed the residents of rural Gwanda district to hold both a conservation and utilisation conviction (syncretic view) towards the environment. However, utilisation outweighs conservation. Furthermore, older residents are more inclined to conservation in comparison to the youth. The study also divulged that the origin of a species in the natural environment was insignificant to the host community. However, the livelihood effects that species had (regardless of origins) were the major determinants of attitudes developed towards it.

The study uses two horizontal dimensions of environmental attitudes formulation (New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) Scale and Kellet’s (1996) classification of environmental values). Data was collected using a questionnaire survey, group discussions and key informant interviews. A sample of 156 individuals comprised the study respondents. Results showed the residents of rural Gwanda district to hold both a conservation and utilisation conviction (syncretic view) towards the environment. However, utilisation outweighs conservation. Furthermore, older residents are more inclined to conservation in comparison to the youth. The study also divulged that the origin of a species in the natural environment was insignificant to the host community. However, the livelihood effects that species had (regardless of origins) were the major determinants of attitudes developed towards it.

Biomass potential and nutrient export of mature pinus radiata in the southern Cape region of South Africa

These models quantify the aboveground biomass of rotation age P. radiata grown in the southern Cape across a range of site conditions. The models use diameter at breast height (DBH) to predict the aboveground component biomass. A nutrient loss risk potential was assigned to each biomass component. Nineteen trees were destructively harvested using a full fresh weight sampling approach. Basic density was determined using a water displacement method, while Newton’s volume equation was used for stemwood volume determination. Log linear models were simultaneously regressed through seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) using the “Systemfit” R statistical package to force component additivity. A categorical variable was applied to the models, grouping the data into two Site Index (SI) based categories, namely “Low” SI and “Medium to High” SI, to account for inter-site variability. The corrected Akaike Information Criteria (AICc) and coefficient of determination (R2) was used to determine the goodness of fit of the models. The McElroy R2 for the SUR system was 0.95. Biomass models were developed that are able to predict various tree component masses at high levels of certainty within site and stand attribute ranges similar to this study. The importance of accurate, site specific wood basic density was demonstrated by its substantial weighting on stem and hence total biomass. Results showed that the stemwood mean basic density range was between 503 kg m-3 and 517 kg m-3 for the “Low” SI sites and 458 kg m-3 for the “Medium to High” SI sites. Site quality can have a major impact on the models, particularly on poorer sites where stemwood production is proportionally less than other tree components. Total aboveground biomass was estimated to range between 58.61 odt ha-1 and 70.85 odt ha-1 for “Low” SI sites, and 185.31 odt ha-1 to 266.58 odt ha-1 for “Medium to High” SI sites. Stemwood biomass accounted for 65% of the total aboveground biomass for “Low” SI sites and 70% for “Medium to High” SI sites.

This has contributed to the loss of genetic diversity amongst the black and white rhinoceros. Conservation and anti-poaching efforts are needed to help maintain genetic diversity. These efforts could be improved through the development of non-invasive techniques to examine DNA from threatened animals. The aim of this research was to develop a molecular technique which would allow for the identification of the black and white rhinoceros and to develop a molecular technique which would allow for intraspecies genetic variation to be examined. DNA extractions were performed on matched faecal and tissue samples that were collected from two regions in South Africa. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer sets were designed to investigate several regions of the rhinoceros mitochondrial genome. PCR optimisation was completed for the target regions. Sequencing was conducted on all final PCR products. The cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COIi) gene allowed for the rhinoceros family to be identified. This region was digested with the HindIII restriction enzyme, which allowed for the specific identification of either the black or white rhinoceros. A subsequent region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COIii) as well as the D-loop, hypervariable regions (HV1 and HV2), cytochrome b (cytb) and 16s rRNA regions were investigated. These regions displayed potential for establishing geographic origin for black rhinoceros samples, whereas the D-loop and HV2 show potential for the white rhinoceros. The white rhinoceros displayed sequence variation in the HV2 and cytb region, while variation was observed in the COIi and HV1 for the black rhinoceros. All investigated target regions allowed for the rhinoceros family to be identified. The COI (COIi and COIii), HV2 and cytb regions allowed for the subspecies of rhinoceros to be identified, however the D-loop was not able to identify the white rhinoceros species. In the first chapter, both the class of invariant optimal control problems and the class of invariant sub-Riemannian structures are organised as categories. The latter category is shown to be functorially equivalent to a subcategory of the former category. Via the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, we associate to each invariant optimal control problem (resp. invariant sub-Riemannian structure) a quadratic Hamilton-Poisson system on the associated Lie-Poisson space. These Hamiltonian systems are also organised as a category and hence the Pontryagin lift is realised as a contravariant functor. Basic properties of these categories are investigated. The rest of this thesis is concerned with the classification (and investigation) of certain subclasses of structures and systems. In the second chapter, the homogeneous positive semidefinite quadratic Hamilton-Poisson systems on three-dimensional Lie-Poisson spaces are classified up to compatibility with a linear isomorphism; a list of 23 normal forms is exhibited. In the third chapter, we classify the invariant sub-Riemannian structures in three dimensions and calculate the isometry group for each normal form. By comparing our results with known results, we show that most isometries (in three dimensions) are in fact the composition of a left translation and a Lie group isomorphism. In the fourth and last chapter of this thesis, we classify the sub-Riemannian and Riemannian structures on the (2n + 1)-dimensional Heisenberg groups. Furthermore, we find the isometry group and geodesics of each normal form.

The guest compounds that featured in the main study were cyclohexanone, 2-methylcyclohexanone, 3-methylcyclohexanone and 4-methylcyclohexanone. It was found that 3- and 4-methylcyclohexanone were trapped in their energetically unfavourable axial conformations in the inclusion crystal. Resolution experiments proved that (2R,3R)-1,1,4,4-tetraphenylbutane-1,2,3,4-tetraol can be used as a resolving agent for 2- and 3-methylcyclohexanone, with ee values of 13% and 22%, respectively (according to the method of Hiemstra), in favour of the R-enantiomer. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) studies, however, showed that 2-methylcyclohexanone was resolved with an ee of 30% in R. An ee of 56% in R was obtained for 3-methylcyclohexanone. Enantiomer enrichment of 2-methylcyclohexanone was achieved in basic medium (ee of 18% according to the method of Hiemstra) and showed that by using the host in either half or double the molar ratio of the guest, a higher ee was obtained than for a 1:1 ratio. A survey was conducted among 50 farmers and three herbalists to determine medicinal plants used to control parasites in goats. The survey revealed nine plant species belonging to eight families that were used. Among the identified plant species, Aloe ferox, Acokanthera oppositifolia and Elephantorrhiza elephantina were the plants having the highest Fidelity Level for their use, each scored 100.00 percent, followed by Albuca setosa (83.33 percent). These plants were then selected for validation studies. Gas-Chromatography-Mass-Spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed 7, 33, 26 and 32 bioactive phytochemicals in A. ferox, E. elephantina, A. oppositifolia and A. setosa, respectively. Terpenes and fatty acids were present, oxygenated terpenes being the most abundant hydrocarbons present in all the four plant species. The effect of acetone, methanol and ethanol extracts of leaves of Aloe ferox and Acokanthera oppositifolia on tick repellency and acaricidal activity were investigated on blood engorged Ambylomma hebraeum and Rhipicephalus decoloratus ticks at concentration 15, 30 and 50 percent. The 30 and 50 percent acetone extract of A. ferox and Dazzel dip had the highest acaricidal properties of 100 percent. The 50 percent methanol extract of A. oppositifolia and 50 percent acetone extract of A. ferox had the highest repellency activity of 89 percent and 85.33 percent, respectively. Results from this study revealed that the efficacy of medicinal plants used by farmers to control ticks vary with the type of solvent used for extracting the bioactive compounds. Furthermore, it revealed that Aloe ferox and A. opppositifolia plant extracts possess repellent and acaricidal activities. In a study to investigate the anthelminthic effect of crude extracts of Elephantorrhiza elephantina and Albuca setosa plants, significant anthelminthic effect on nematodes was observed in both plants. In this study, all E. elephantina and A. setosa extracts caused paralysis and mortality. Methanol was the most effective solvent in extracting bioactive compounds and methanol extract showed the best anthelminthic effects among the crude extracts investigated in both plants. The least time taken for the worms to be paralysed was 8.33 mins and 14.33mins in 100mg/ml methanol extracts of E. elephantina and A. setosa, resepectively. Methanol extract of E. elephantina and A. setosa (100mg/ml) had the highest anthelminthic activity and mortality was recorded after 18mins and 20mins, respectively. Results from this study revealed that these two plants possess anthelminthic activities. Integrated sustainability reporting should be viewed as a vehicle to accomplish this global agenda of going green beyond mere legal requirements. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of integrated sustainability reporting (ISR) on achieving green business status within JSE listed companies. To achieve the purpose, an in-depth literature study and empirical research were undertaken using a triangulation method. After a detailed descriptive and content analysis of the collected primary and secondary data, the study found the following: Most of the JSE listed corporations’ integrated reports are not utilising the CSR, GRI guidelines and voluntary standards as effective tools to drive the process of green sustainable business. Some of the JSE listed organisations are treating financial and non-financial matters as separate issues in their integrated reports; The ISR has no impact in terms of using the NEMA framework in driving the process of green sustainable business in the JSE listed organisations; Most of the JSE listed organisations were fully aware of ecological sustainability as a pillar to drive the process of green sustainable business. They treat this pillar of sustainable development as a separate entity from socio-economic developmental issues. Most of the JSE listed corporations adhere to all the bylaws and regulations of ecological sustainability within their required certification of ISO 14001 standards in order to remain effectively certified by the auditing authority. Some integrated reports indicated much support for staff in terms of health, educational activities, labour laws and programmes that advance the socio-economic aspects of human beings; The study has found that the social pillar of sustainability is mostly supported by JSE listed organisations in South Africa - to the level of the requirements of labour relations legislation. It is not integrated with sustainability policies beyond the statutory requirements; It was further noticed in this study that integrated sustainability reports, based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) principles and the King III reporting guidelines, disclose outcomes and results regarding the JSE listed organisations’ obligations, strategy and management approach which occurred within the reporting period. To address the above-listed findings, the researcher recommended that the JSE listed organisations integrate the NEMA, EMS, CSR, GRI and King III guidelines in their integrated sustainability reporting, in order to produce an effective sustainable green business in South Africa that is ecologically accountable and socio-economically supportive to all multi-stakeholders. The government and non-governmental organisations are the key players to drive the process of going green using the ISR. The government needs more structured policies and regulations that will support the National Development Plan in the pursuit of green economy in the form of grants and incentives that are beyond the present status quo.

The aim of this study was to extract, isolate and characterize the biologically active volatile and non-volatile compounds from Tagetes minuta and Rauvolfia caffra respectively. Tagetes minuta plant was considered for extraction of essential oils using hydrodistillation method. Cis-β-ocimene (38.03%), caryophyllene oxide (18.04%), alloocimene (25.35 %), isopropyl tetradecanoate (17.02 %), cis-ocimene (38.14%) and trans-β-ocimene (37.03%) were the major components of essential oil analyzed from fresh stem, dried stem, fresh leaf, dried leaf, fresh flower and dried flower respectively. The volatile compounds were identified by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Gas Chromatography (GC). Essential oil of dried stem leaf and flower parts of T. minuta exhibit antioxidant activity as demonstrated by the DPPH and FRAP bioassays. Crude extracts were extracted from R. caffra stem bark using sequence of solvents namely n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol and ethanol. A white powder, a β-sitosterol (non-volatile compound) was isolated by column chromatography from ethyl acetate fractions of R. caffra stem bark and identified on various spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR and (1D and 2D) NMR. Melting point was also determined to be a sharp 129-130 ºC. DCM, EA, MetOH and EtOH fractions as well as β-Sitosterol (compound SM/01), showed antioxidant activity when tested on DPPH, FRAP, total phenolic and flavonoid bioassays. This antioxidant activity might be due to the presence of hydroxyl groups in the compound and crude fractions. On the other hand, T. minuta’s essential oil showed high antioxidant activity when evaluated on the DPPH and FRAP bioassays, which can be attributed to the presence of oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes known to act as free radical scavenging and reducing agents. The use of R. caffra stem bark extracts against hypertension and other diseases by traditional healers could be attributed to the presence of phytochemicals (polyphenols and flavonoids) with known health benefits. Thus, it is recommended that the plant should be exploited further using modern techniques involving separation and purification of compounds that can be used for drug formulation. This study supports the use of T. minuta and R. caffra as the potential natural antioxidant source to manage various diseases including hypertension.

However, the plantation forestry industry is challenged with limited freshwater resources, the need for sustainable management of introduced tree species in commercial forest production systems, and a diversity of plant ecological production factors such as soils that have to be manipulated for the purposes of increasing production capacities. Additionally, plantations are established in the limited high rainfall regions of the country and the industry’s water use has been regulated since 1972. Conversely, natural forests also provide valuable goods, however, their slow growth rates have restricted their development as commercial tree production systems. In this regard the forestry industry is continuously seeking to provide for the country’s timber and fibre needs while ensuring the provision of other ecosystem services from tree production systems. Recent developments in the forestry industry have therefore been focused on water use efficiency in current and alternative tree production systems. There is also widespread unsubstantiated belief that indigenous tree species are efficient users of water. Against this background this study sought to explore the single tree water use and water use efficiencies of introduced commercial plantation species (Pinus radiata) and that of important indigenous species (Ilex mitis, Ocotea bullata and Podocarpus latifolius) for timber and fibre production in the southern Cape region of South Africa. Single tree water use measurements were carried out for a year using the heat pulse velocity method. Growth measurements for utilisable stem wood were done on a quarterly basis for the specimen trees and growth increments over the year were determined. Single tree water use efficiency was a calculated as a function of grams of stem wood gained per litre of water transpired. Measurements of daily weather conditions and soil water content were concurrently taken during the year. The relationships between the variables that express daily climatic conditions, soil water content and daily volumes of transpired water were explored. Empirical models for the prediction of daily transpiration as a function of climate and soil water content were then developed using multiple linear regression analysis. Pinus radiata trees exhibited higher totals of volumetric transpiration than the indigenous species. The water use patterns of Pinus radiata showed higher peaks of maximum and minimum daily and seasonal water use while the indigenous species showed temperate patterns of water use throughout the year. Podocarpus latifolius attained the lowest water use efficiency in the year (0.49g/L) while Pinus radiata, Ocotea bullata and Ilex mitis had comparable water use efficiency values ranging between 1g/L to 2.50g/L. Significant positive correlations existed between climatic variables and daily sapflow volumes of the tree specimens. Daily total solar radiation showed the highest positive correlation with daily transpiration and the average value of the correlation coefficient for solar radiation and water use for all tree species was 0.70 (p < 0.001). Empirical models for predicting daily water use integrated the variables expressing plant available moisture and energy.
