- Description: This thesis investigates the subversion of Biblical discourse in Jeanette Winterson’s first two novels, Oranges are Not the Only Fruit and Boating for Beginners. By rewriting Biblical stories Winterson challenges traditional Western religious discourses and their rules for heteronormative social and sexual behaviours and desires. Winterson’s texts respond to the patriarchal nature of socially pervasive texts, such as the Bible, by encouraging her readers to regard these texts with suspicion, thus highlighting what can be seen as a ‘postmodern concern’ with the notion of ‘truth’. Chapter One of this thesis comprises a discussion of Biblical boundaries. These boundaries, I argue, are a process of historical oppression which serves to subjugate and control women, a practice inherent in the Bible and modern society. The Biblical boundaries within which women are expected to live, are carefully portrayed in Oranges and then comically and blasphemously mocked in Boating. Chapter One also argues that Winterson’s sexuality plays an important role in the understanding of her texts, despite her desire for her sexuality to remain ‘outside’ her writing. Chapter Two of this thesis, examines the mix of fact and fiction in Oranges, in order to create a new genre: fictional memoir. The chapter introduces the concept of the ‘autobiographical pact’ and the textual agreement which Winterson creates with her readers. In this chapter, I examine Winterson’s powerful subversion of Biblical discourse, through her narration of Jeanette’s ‘coming out’ within a Biblical framework. Chapter Three of this thesis examines Winterson’s second book, Boating, and the serious elements of this comic book. This chapter studies the various postmodern narrative techniques used in Boating in order to subvert Biblical and historical discourse. Chapter Three highlights Winterson’s postmodern concern with the construction of history as ‘truth’. Finally, Chapter Four compares Oranges and Boating, showing the texts as differing, yet equally relevant textual counterparts. This chapter examines the anti-feminine characters in both texts and Winterson’s ability to align her reader with a feminist or lesbian viewpoint. This thesis argues that Winterson’s first two texts deliberately challenge Biblical discourse in favour of a postmodern feminist viewpoint.

- Description: The arts and cultural sector has come under even more financial strain than it previously was, as it has to compete with other sectors of the economy for the very limited public funding that is available. It is in this context that the economic impact, and the role, of the arts and cultural sector towards advancing economic growth and development, needs be examined. This thesis investigates the potential for the positive impact of the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) on growth and development of small cities and towns. Furthermore, it also provides guidelines for the development of regional cultural policy in small cities and towns. The CCIs have also been touted as a catalyst for economic growth and economic development, hence the global rise in their interest. For example, the CCIs have been used to redevelop and revive urban areas that have been rundown. CCIs, however, tend to develop in clusters, and additionally, they cluster around large cities. However, the lack of reliance of some CCIs on long supply chains or high-technology inputs may make them suitable candidates for investment in small cities and towns. Additionally, the link that small cities and towns have with rural and isolated areas makes them potential engines for driving growth, development, as well as employment creation for these areas, given their decline as a result of the transition from the traditional agricultural economy, to the knowledge economy. As CCIs have the propensity to drive government’s macroeconomic objectives such as efficiency, equity, economic growth and job creation, it is necessary to develop cultural policy that regards this. The tendency of CCIs to cluster and develop around large cities inevitably means that very little research into cultural policy directed towards regions without large cities and towns has been done. By the same token, very little research has also been conducted on how to craft cultural policy for such areas. In order then, for cultural policy for regions without large cities and towns to be developed, it is necessary to investigate, and provide, guidelines on, how to develop cultural policy for such regions. As a case study, the Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) in the Eastern Cape was chosen. The SBDM has no large cities and towns, but the District Municipality has identified the CCIs as a potential growth sector, and is in the process of developing a regional cultural policy. The area also includes Grahamstown, which not only hosts the National Arts Festival, which is the largest arts event of its type in Africa, but is also piloting the “Creative City” project in South Africa. An audit and mapping study was conducted on the CCIs in the SBDM; this was based on a national mapping study commissioned by the Department of Arts and Culture. Further internet searches, as well as consultations with the provincial and regional Department of Arts of Culture, coupled with snowball sampling, also aided in the identification of CCIs, and consequently, the “creative hotspots” within the SBDM. Two random samples of stakeholders were chosen; the CCI owners and practitioners, as well as key stakeholders such as government officials, and interviews conducted with both groups, in order to get a first-hand perspective on the operations, activities, challenges, and opportunities that are faced by the CCIs. The study found that there were at least 441 CCIs in the SBDM, with two local municipalities (Dr. Beyers Naude and Makana) hosting the largest share of these (145 and 113 CCIs in each local municipality respectively), which indicates some support for the ‘clustering’ theory. It was also found that the local municipalities that had the largest number of CCIs also experienced better socio-economic welfare. Furthermore, based on the UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics (FCS) domains, the Visual Arts and Crafts; Information, Books and Press; and, Cultural Heritage domains were the largest domains represented in the SBDM. It was concluded that cultural policy that is developed, ought to take advantage of, and build on, these existing clusters, as well as the domains that are most prevalent in the region. To demonstrate the impact of cultural festivals on growth and development, a socio-economic impact study was undertaken at the 2016 National Arts Festival (NAF) in Grahamstown. Face to interviews, as well as self-completion questionnaires were used, with respondents at different venues, attending a variety of shows, and across a range of demographics, being interviewed, in order to get a representative sample of Festival attendees. It was found that the economic impact of the 2016 NAF on the city of Grahamstown was R94.4 million. Over and above the economic value of the NAF, it was also found that there were nonmarket benefits (social and intrinsic values) of the NAF, that included audience development, education of the arts and culture, social cohesion, and community development. The inability to directly track and measure social and intrinsic values proved to be a challenge. The study concluded that in order for successful cultural policy to be developed in regions without large cities and towns, it is first necessary to carry out a study to identify what resources are present, and where they are. Locating resources enables cluster identification - as clusters encourage comparative and competitive advantage, it is worthwhile to invest in areas where there are clusters. Therefore, in the allocation of scarce public funds, cultural policy needs to guide investment in to areas where established clusters indicate existing comparative advantage. In terms of equity and transformation, it is also necessary to evaluate labour markets and ownership patterns when developing cultural policy. Beyond the analysis of physical and human resources, the study also found that a crucial step towards developing successful cultural policy is identification of opportunities and challenges faced by the practitioners themselves; the policy ought to capitalise on the opportunities, whilst attempting to correct the challenges faced. Also of importance is aligning the proposed policy and its objectives with regional, provincial and national aims and objectives. Finally, it is important to include a monitoring and evaluation tool that will evaluate the performance of the policy against its stated aims and objectives.

University administrations and funders would be better able to stimulate research if they had insights into context-specific, institutional constraints, and enablers. Yet, there is surprisingly little research on the determinants of research productivity amongst academics employed in the higher education sector, particularly in the global south. Barriers and enablers of research at the individual level may differ, and experience of such may vary across career stage. The objective of the research reported here was to determine what enables and motivates some academics at Rhodes University (South Africa) to do research, what problems and constraints may be making it difficult for those who may wish to do more, and how do these vary in relation to research career stage. An anonymous online survey, with follow-up focus group discussions was used to collect the data. Results show similarities to studies in developed countries, but also reveal disciplinary and career stage differences, which suggest that institutional policies need to take these factors into account when designing support or incentives.

The increased in energy demand as well as the detrimental effects posed by emission of greenhouse gases due to continue use of fossil fuels for electricity generation has led to a renewed focus on energy production using renewable energy sources which are relatively cheap, clean and environmentally sustainable. Among the various renewable energy sources used so far, the Dye Synthesized Solar Cells (DSSCs), a form of photovoltaic device is reported for their better efficiencies despite their low cost of production and ability to work relatively under low light conditions. A recent report on the solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency of a typical DSSC sensitizer made from zinc based porphyrin dye coupled with sintered titanium(IV) oxide as semiconductor was 13 percent. In this study, 2,2-bipyridyl-4,4-dicarboxylic acid (bpydc) was used as mixed ligand and four dithiolate ligands; L1 = dipotassium ethoxycarbonyl-1-cyanoethylene-2,2-dithiolate, L2 = dipotassium bis(ethoxycarbonyl)ethane-2,2-dithiolate, L3 = dipotassium cyanodithio imidocarbonate and L4 = dipotassium 2,2-dicyanoethylene-2,2-dithiolate were synthesized while four alkyl thiourea ligands, L5 = 1,3-dimethyl thiourea, L6 = 1,3-diethyl thiourea, L7 = 1,3-diisopropyl thiourea and L8 = 1-methyl thiourea were purchased and used as supplied without further purification. These ligands were used to prepare eight ruthenium(II) complexes of mixed bipyridyl/dithiolate/thiourea. The compounds were characterised by elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques, namely: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), ultraviolet-visible and photoluminescence (PL). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) were used for the electrochemical studies. Photoluminescence and UV-Vis spectroscopies were used for geometric and photophysical studies of the complexes respectively. FTIR spectra confirmed presence of functional groups in ligands and coordination of these ligands to ruthenium(II) ions to form complexes. The UV-Vis confirmed that the Ru(II) dithiolene complexes exhibited square planar geometries while the Ru(II) thiourea complexes gave octahedral geometries, this was deduced from the transitions assigned to the complexes. All the ruthenium(II) complexes synthesized showed photoluminescence properties that are suitable for light harvesting and application for dye-sensitized solar cells. Cyclic and square wave voltammetry show Ru(II) thiourea complexes have better redox properties when compared to Ru(II) dithiolate complexes which is ascribed to ligand strength field possibly due to contribution from the two bonded NCS groups.

The compounds were characterised by elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques, namely: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), ultraviolet-visible and photoluminescence (PL). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) were used for the electrochemical studies. Photoluminescence and UV-Vis spectroscopies were used for geometric and photophysical studies of the complexes respectively. FTIR spectra confirmed presence of functional groups in ligands and coordination of these ligands to ruthenium(II) ions to form complexes. The UV-Vis confirmed that the Ru(II) dithiolene complexes exhibited square planar geometries while the Ru(II) thiourea complexes gave octahedral geometries, this was deduced from the transitions assigned to the complexes. All the ruthenium(II) complexes synthesized showed photoluminescence properties that are suitable for light harvesting and application for dye-sensitized solar cells. Cyclic and square wave voltammetry show Ru(II) thiourea complexes have better redox properties when compared to Ru(II) dithiolate complexes which is ascribed to ligand strength field possibly due to contribution from the two bonded NCS groups.

The complexes were characterized by conductivity measurement, solubility, melting point, UV-Vis, PL, FTIR (ATR), NMR, Cyclic and square wave voltammetry. Nine chelating ligands, comprising of six (6) tripodal chelating ligands, two (2) vinyl monodentate ligands and one (1) vinyl tridentate ligand, were used for the synthesis of ruthenium(II) complexes ATR-FTIR spectra of all the ruthenium(II) complexes measured as solid samples, exhibited fine resolution IR bands in region between 3473-3438 cm-1 of carboxylic group in H2dcbpy. The bands in the range 3040-2950 cm-1 were ascribed to C-H bond stretching for the CH3 groups. The coordination of NCS group in the sphere of ruthenium(II) complexes related to series I, IV, VI VII and one compound of series VIII was investigated by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Bands in the range of 2116-2106 cm-1 and 777-770 cm-1 are ascribed to the respective N=C and the C=S bond stretching vibration which confirms the N-coordination of the SCN group. For all the complexes, the stretching vibration of Ru-N bonding was between 466 and 411 cm-1 due to coordination of the nitrogen atoms of the ligands to ruthenium central metal atom. The 1H NMR spectra of series II-VII and the two compounds of series VIII of the ruthenium(II) complexes show multiplets in the aromatic region above 6 ppm due to the presence of either vpdiinp or vpbpp ligand, situated in different magnetic environment. Carbon-13 NMR spectra data of series I, IV, VI VII and one compound in VIII show resonance peaks within the range 130-135 ppm are ascribed to NCS ligand confirming the presence of N-coordinated thiocyanate. Cyclic voltammograms of series I-IV and VI-VIII complexes display ruthenium-based oxidative peaks and the pyridines ligand-based reductive peaks. The redox behavior of complexes 4-12, 14-16, 18-20, 24-26 and 30 is dominated by the Ru(II)/R(III) redox couple in region (E1/2 between 0.53 and 1.18) and the pyridines ligand-based redox couples in the region between (E1/2 between −0.25 and −1.45). The photophysical property studies of the Ru(II) complexes are determined through the acquisitions of the absorption spectra, which tends to have profound effect on the short circuit current of DSSC. The absorption maxima were tuned by the introduction and variation of six (6) tripodal chelating ligands, two (2) vinyl monodentate ligands and one (1) vinyl tridentate ligand. From the studies, the results show that series IV, V, VI, VII and VIII complexes of molecular formula [Ru(H2dcbpy)2(N^)(NCS)]2+, [Ru(H2dcbpy)2(N^)2]2+, [Ru(H2dcbpy)(N^)2(NCS)2]2+, [Ru(H2dcbpy)(N^)(NCS)3]2+ and [Ru(vptpy)(H2dcbpy)(N^^^)]2+ respectively, have higher and multiple local absorption maxima near-IR region than the complexes of series I, II and III of molecular [Ru(bdmpmar)(H2dcbpy)(NCS)]2,+, [Ru(bdmpmar)(vpdiinp)(H2dcbpy)]2,+, [Ru(bdmpmar)(vpbpp)(H2dcbpy)]2,+respectively.

Classification of Distinct Fuzzy Subgroups of the Dihedral Group Dp nq for p and q distinct primes and n ∈ N

- Description: In this dissertation, we classify distinct fuzzy subgroups of the dihedral group Dpnq, for p and q distinct primes and n ∈ N, under a natural equivalence relation of fuzzy subgroups and a fuzzy isomorphism. We aim to present formulae for the number of maximal chains and the number of distinct fuzzy subgroups of this group. Our study will include some theory on non-abelian groups since the classification of distinct fuzzy subgroups of this group relies on the crisp characterization of maximal chains. We give the definition of a natural equivalence relation introduced by Murali and Makamba in [67] which we will use in this study. Based on this definition, we introduce two counting techniques that we will use to compute the number of distinct fuzzy subgroups of Dpnq. In this dissertation, we use the criss-cut counting technique as our primary method of enumeration, and the cross-cut method serves as a means of verifying results we obtain from our primary method. To classify distinct fuzzy subgroups of this group, we begin by investigating the dihedral groups Dpnq, for p and q distinct primes and specific values of n = 2 and 3 to observe a trend. We classify the flags of these groups using the characterization of flags introduced in [93]. From this characterization, we then present formulae for the number of distinct fuzzy subgroups attributed to the flags of Dp 2q and Dp 3q . To generalise results for Dpnq, for p and q distinct primes and n ∈ N, we characterize the flags of this group and classify them as either cyclic, mdcyclic for 1 ≤ m ≤ n, or b-cyclic. Finally, we establish a general formula for the number of distinct fuzzy subgroups obtainable from these flags. We conclude by comparing results obtained from using our general formula to those obtained by other researchers for the same group. The structures of all compounds were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses (1D and 2D NMR, EI and ESI-MS). 3α,28-Dihydroxyfriedelan-1-one (1), 3α-hydroxy-1-oxofriedelane (2), manniotaraxerol A (3), manniotaraxerol B (4), and betulinic acid (5) were evaluated against HeLa (human cervix adenocarcinoma) cancer cells. Manniotaraxerol A (3) showed weak in vitro cytotoxicity with a cell viability value of 49.3%. Betulinic acid (5) also showed significant cytotoxicity against HeLa cell with a cell viability value of 4.0%; the other compounds were inactive in this test.

- Description: Despite the prevalence of theories and research that could serve as guidelines for addressing intercultural communication challenges such as misunderstanding, ineffectiveness and inappropriateness in communication in Sino-African organisational contexts, the continued existence of these challenges suggests the inadequacy of such theories. Accordingly, in consideration of African and Chinese cultural perspectives, the aim of this study was to develop a hybrid intercultural communication congruence (HICC) framework in order to enhance intercultural communication and achieve intercultural communication congruence in Sino-African organisational contexts. In this study, intercultural communication congruence means effectiveness and appropriateness in intercultural communication. To achieve the study aim, an interpretive pragmatism paradigm was adopted, comprising a two-pronged approach of a synthesis of extant literature and theory as well as an empirical qualitative study, both underpinned by cross-cultural management theory. Based on the synthesis of literature and theory, a generic theoretical intercultural communication congruence framework underpinned by intercultural communication awareness - a state where communicants understand communication orientation and manner of communication in their own and their counterparts’ culture - was developed. A further contribution was a theoretical contextualisation of the generic theoretical intercultural communication congruence framework, resulting in a theoretical framework for intercultural communication awareness in Western, African and Chinese cultures and a theoretical intercultural communication congruence framework specific to Sino-African organisational contexts. Thereafter, with the aim of validating the intercultural communication awareness dimension of the theoretical intercultural communication congruence framework specific to Sino-African organisational contexts, an empirical study was conducted with a sample of seven African and eight Chinese experts using indepth interviews with open-ended and semi-structured questions. Based on qualitative content analysis, six intercultural communication awareness enablers or conditions that enable people to understand communication in different cultures and contexts for the purposes of attaining intercultural communication awareness emerged. These were cultural orientation, manner of communication, orientation to rules and protocol, individual dispositions, intercultural communication influences and intercultural communication variations. An integration of the intercultural communication awareness enablers into the generic theoretical intercultural communication congruence framework results in an updated generic theoretical intercultural communication congruence framework. Then, informed by the updated generic theoretical intercultural communication congruence framework, a further contribution of this study was an empirical verification of the intercultural communication awareness dimension of the theoretical intercultural communication congruence framework specific to Sino-African organisational contexts to result in a final hybrid intercultural communication congruence framework for Sino-African organisational contexts supported by the perspectives of those involved in interaction, rather than predetermined standards of other cultures. Empirical findings suggest that both African and Chinese colleagues maintain a sense of collectivism in the Sino- African organisational context, although this is demonstrated differently. In addition, African colleagues display a blended manner of communication characterised by a mix of Western and African ways while the Chinese manner is contextual and governed by roles and relationships. In African culture, rules and protocol are negotiated, aimed at social maintenance, while strong cultural patriotism ensures strict adherence in Chinese culture. In respect of individual dispositions, African people are seen as open and accommodating while the Chinese disposition could be described as closed and ambiguous. Also evident in the findings is the existence of within-culture differences and influence of noncultural factors on intercultural communication that should be addressed in order to achieve intercultural communication congruence. Finally, the frameworks developed and the methodological processes followed will stimulate academic debate and raise numerous questions for future research. Immediate future research could be geared towards refining the concepts of intercultural communication awareness, intercultural communication congruence and the hybrid intercultural communication congruence framework for Sino-African organisational contexts. At a management practice level, intercultural communication awareness insights provide a reference point for intercultural communication enhancement strategies and interventions in Sino-African organisational contexts.

Energy use patterns and trends: the impact of energy policy in South African low-income households

- Description: Energy poverty is a growing concern especially amongst low-income populations in developing countries. The transition to modern energy carriers is associated with welfare improvement and it is considered as an important developmental goal to achieve, in order to eradicate energy poverty. As such, the South African government has made energy poverty an issue of policy focus. Literature abounds with different measures of energy poverty; energy programmes and policies are also aimed at improving the welfare of the low-income households in terms of basic services such as electricity. As a point of entry into this study, this thesis explored energy use patterns and trends in low-income South African households. The research objectives addressed in the study included investigating the extent of energy poverty through a multidimensional energy poverty index, examining the extent to which the 'energy ladder' and 'energy stacking' models explains energy transition patterns and to examining whether the Free Basic Electricity Policy has impacted on energy choices and energy poverty. In order to contribute to energy poverty and energy policy discussion in South Africa, this study has investigated the dimensions of energy poverty amongst low-income South African households from these three different perspectives (objectives). A positivist approach, by using a quantitative method was used to underpin the study. The study utilised secondary data, which were from the National Income Dynamics Survey and Income and Expenditure Survey. The former was used for the analysis of the multidimensional energy poverty index and energy transition patterns whilst the latter was used for the analysis of the impact of the Free Basic Electricity Policy. The four waves of the National Income Dynamics Survey, with 2008 as the base year and the 2010/2011 version of the Income and Expenditure Survey were used whilst the data were processed through the quantitative software package, STATA version 12. The data were then analysed using the multidimensional energy poverty framework by Nussbaumer et al. (2011) and econometric models, which best fit the objectives. The result of the panel analysis, which assesses the multidimensional energy poverty for low-income households in South Africa showed that low-income households in both urban and rural areas are in a moderate state of energy poverty but different levels. However, the cross-sectional analysis revealed that the percentage of low-income households that are energy poor is reducing for the rural households but increasing for their urban counterparts from 2008 to 2014. The panel and cross-sectional results of the contribution of the energy dimensions in multidimensional energy poverty shows that the low-income households are especially energy poor in terms of heating fuel. The findings from the econometric estimates partly confirmed an energy ladder behaviour for the energy choice for cooking. An energy stacking behaviour was confirmed for the low- income households for these energy services - heating and lighting. Moreover, it was found that with respect to cooking and heating, low-income households living in a modern dwelling, having a small household size and residing in an urban area are less likely to use transitional or traditional energy carriers but most likely to use modern energy carriers. In addition, low-income households are more likely to use modern energy carriers for their cooking and heating in 2010, 2012 and 2014 than in 2008. For lighting energy service, low- income households living in a modern dwelling in an urban settlement are most likely to use modern energy carriers for lighting and less likely to use transitional energy carriers or candles. Only in 2014 were low-income households more likely to use modern energy carriers for lighting than in 2008. The results further showed that modern energy carriers have the highest probability of being preferred for lighting followed by cooking and lastly heating. Also emerging from the findings are that more urban low-income households are receiving the Free Basic Electricity (FBE) grant than their counterparts in the rural areas. The probability of low-income households owning entertainment/education appliance and food preserving appliance is positively influenced by access to Free Basic Electricity. The low- income households living in an urban settlement and in a modern type of dwelling supported this result. However, household size does not seems to support this result should it grow larger.

- Description: Frost environments occur throughout the world, with associated processes occurring across climatic zones. Climatic geomorphology proposes that climatic zones, largely derived from annual average air temperature and precipitation values, have specific landforms and processes active within that zone. This study offers unique insights into the frost environments of three locations in the Southern Hemisphere, namely the Eastern Cape Drakensberg of South Africa, sub-Antarctic Marion Island, and Dronning Maud Land of Antarctica. The Drakensberg ranges from temperate to alpine, Marion Island is hyper-maritime, and Dronning Maud Land a polar desert. Drivers and forcings on the ground frost regime are identified, as are future climatic scenarios. Altitude and latitude were identified as the most important locational drivers, while air temperature showed highest correlation with freezing events. The initiation of a freeze event correlated strongly with maximum ground temperatures. Vegetation cover was found to ameliorate frost cycles, thereby increasing ground temperatures. Dronning Maud Land of Antarctica is characterised by annual frost (permafrost), with limited seasonal thaw in summer. Thawing cycles reflected the depth of the active layer, which ranged from just under 60 cm for Robertskollen (at lowest altitude) to less than 15 cm on Slettfjell (at greatest altitude). Marion Island had the most active frost environment, exhibiting both seasonal frost, and ubiquitous shallow diurnal frost cycles. The Drakensberg were largely frost-free, with limited seasonal frost and few diurnal freeze- thaw events. Diurnal frost processes were found to be azonal, and present at all three study locations. Evidence of landforms derived from diurnal frost processes were evident in each zone. Equifinality/convergence of form was present to a degree. The presence of patterned ground, which was not wholly derived from frost processes, suggests a measure of equifinality. Furthermore, openwork block deposits, of which not all are either blockstreams nor blockfields, are not necessarily the result of frost processes. The periglacial environment is poorly defined and methods to delineate this environment, as well as other climatic zones, should include additional parameters. Delineating zones on annual (and limited) monthly averages based on predominantly temperature, is not sufficient. While concepts of climatic geomorphology may be applied in a general sense, this framework is not suited to working at smaller scales. Specifically, periglacial environments should be delineated using ground moisture, as well as air temperature. Furthermore, vegetation and snow cover are important, as are soil textural properties.

Molecularly imprinted polymeric materials for adsorptive removal of nitrogen compounds from fuel oils

- Description: The deleterious effects of refractory polyaromatic hydrocarbons found in fuels such as organonitrogen compounds (quinoline, carbazole and its alkylated derivatives) are such that they emit NOx to the environment when combusted, thereby reducing air quality. These compounds also deactivate the catalyst used during fuel refinement and in catalytic converters of cars. Hydro-denitrogenation (HDN), a process currently being employed in petroleum refineries to eliminate organonitrogen compounds in fuels, is limited in treating these refractory compounds. Hence, this thesis describes the use of two separate complimentary approaches for the removal of organonitrogen compounds in fuel such as oxidative denitrogenation and adsorptive denitrogenation. The catalyzed oxidation of fuel oil model nitrogen containing compound, quinoline to quinoline N-oxide, was conducted under batch and continuous flow microreactor at 70°C by using tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BuOOH) as oxidant and silica supported V2O5 as catalyst, followed by the selective adsorption of the quinoline N-oxide. An overall conversion of 62% quinoline N-oxide was observed. Quinoline-N-oxide in model fuel was absorbed by employing synthesized molecularly imprinted 2,6-pyridine-polybenzimidazole (2,6-PyPBI) nanofibers, 86% of quinoline-N-oxide was removed to give an adsorption capacity (qe) of 4.8 mg/g. DFT calculations to study the interactions of quinoline-N-oxide vs 2,6-PyPBI indicated that: (i) hydrogen bonding (through amino group of 2,6-PyPBI and oxygen atoms of the quinoline-N-oxide), (ii) pi-pi stacking and (iii) extensive number of van der Waals interactions took place. Several oxygenates from N-compounds were produced, thus, complicating the fuel matrix. Therefore, there is a need to move towards adsorptive denitrogenation. Poly-2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-4-phenol (PIMH) imprinted microspheres was prepared by suspension polymerization using 2-(2’-hydroxy-4-ethenylphenyl) imidazole as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker in the presence of various organonitrogen compounds (templates) to produce 2-(2’-hydroxy-4-ethenylphenyl) imidazole (PIMH). Imprinted microspheres show selectivity for various target model nitrogen-containing compounds with adsorption capacities of 6.8 ± 0.2 mg/g, 6.3 ± 0.3 mg/g and 5.8 ± 0.3 mg/g for quinoline, pyrimidine and carbazole, respectively. Adsorption selectivity increased in the order of quinoline (αi-r = 136.9) ˃ pyrimidine (αi-r = 126.2) ˃carbazole (αi-r = 86.3), when naphthalene was selected as a reference compound. Though, imprinted microspheres displayed excellent nitrogen compound removal both in model and real fuel, there was a need to improve the adsorbent adsorption capacity for N-compounds in fuel through the fabrication of imprinted nanofibers. Molecularly imprinted poly-2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-4-phenol nanofibers was prepared by electrospinning of 2-(2’-hydroxy-4-ethenylphenyl) imidazole (PIMH) in the presence of various organonitrogen compounds. These imprinted nanofibers show selectivity for various target model nitrogen-containing compounds with adsorption capacities of 11.7 ± 0.9 mg/g, 11.9 ± 0.8 mg/g and 11.3 ± 1.1 mg/g for quinoline, pyrimidine and carbazole, respectively. Adsorption selectivity increased in the order of pyrimidine (αi-r = 258.8) ˃ quinoline (αi-r = 235.5) ˃ carbazole (αi-r = 168.2). It further displayed excellent nitrogen removal in real fuel. The use of polybenzimidazole (PBI) nanofibers showed selective adsorption of organonitrogen compounds as imprinted sorbent also displayed high selectivity for their target model nitrogen-containing compounds with adsorption capacities of 11.4 ± 0.4 mg/g, 11.9 ± 0.2 mg/g and 10.9 ± 0.7 mg/g for quinoline, pyrimidine and carbazole respectively. Adsorption selectivity increased in the order of pyrimidine (αi-r = 241.5) ˃ quinoline (αi-r = 237.6) ˃ carbazole (αi-r = 170). - Description: The deleterious effects of refractory polyaromatic hydrocarbons found in fuels such as organonitrogen compounds (quinoline, carbazole and its alkylated derivatives) are such that they emit NOx to the environment when combusted, thereby reducing air quality. These compounds also deactivate the catalyst used during fuel refinement and in catalytic converters of cars. Hydro-denitrogenation (HDN), a process currently being employed in petroleum refineries to eliminate organonitrogen compounds in fuels, is limited in treating these refractory compounds. Hence, this thesis describes the use of two separate complimentary approaches for the removal of organonitrogen compounds in fuel such as oxidative denitrogenation and adsorptive denitrogenation. The catalyzed oxidation of fuel oil model nitrogen containing compound, quinoline to quinoline N-oxide, was conducted under batch and continuous flow microreactor at 70°C by using tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BuOOH) as oxidant and silica supported V2O5 as catalyst, followed by the selective adsorption of the quinoline N-oxide. An overall conversion of 62% quinoline N-oxide was observed. Quinoline-N-oxide in model fuel was absorbed by employing synthesized molecularly imprinted 2,6-pyridine-polybenzimidazole (2,6-PyPBI) nanofibers, 86% of quinoline-N-oxide was removed to give an adsorption capacity (qe) of 4.8 mg/g. DFT calculations to study the interactions of quinoline-N-oxide vs 2,6-PyPBI indicated that: (i) hydrogen bonding (through amino group of 2,6-PyPBI and oxygen atoms of the quinoline-N-oxide), (ii) pi-pi stacking and (iii) extensive number of van der Waals interactions took place. Several oxygenates from N-compounds were produced, thus, complicating the fuel matrix. Therefore, there is a need to move towards adsorptive denitrogenation. Poly-2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-4-phenol (PIMH) imprinted microspheres was prepared by suspension polymerization using 2-(2’-hydroxy-4-ethenylphenyl) imidazole as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker in the presence of various organonitrogen compounds (templates) to produce 2-(2’-hydroxy-4-ethenylphenyl) imidazole (PIMH). Imprinted microspheres show selectivity for various target model nitrogen-containing compounds with adsorption capacities of 6.8 ± 0.2 mg/g, 6.3 ± 0.3 mg/g and 5.8 ± 0.3 mg/g for quinoline, pyrimidine and carbazole, respectively. Adsorption selectivity increased in the order of quinoline (αi-r = 136.9) ˃ pyrimidine (αi-r = 126.2) ˃carbazole (αi-r = 86.3), when naphthalene was selected as a reference compound. Though, imprinted microspheres displayed excellent nitrogen compound removal both in model and real fuel, there was a need to improve the adsorbent adsorption capacity for N-compounds in fuel through the fabrication of imprinted nanofibers. Molecularly imprinted poly-2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-4-phenol nanofibers was prepared by electrospinning of 2-(2’-hydroxy-4-ethenylphenyl) imidazole (PIMH) in the presence of various organonitrogen compounds. These imprinted nanofibers show selectivity for various target model nitrogen-containing compounds with adsorption capacities of 11.7 ± 0.9 mg/g, 11.9 ± 0.8 mg/g and 11.3 ± 1.1 mg/g for quinoline, pyrimidine and carbazole, respectively. Adsorption selectivity increased in the order of pyrimidine (αi-r = 258.8) ˃ quinoline (αi-r = 235.5) ˃ carbazole (αi-r = 168.2). It further displayed excellent nitrogen removal in real fuel. The use of polybenzimidazole (PBI) nanofibers showed selective adsorption of organonitrogen compounds as imprinted sorbent also displayed high selectivity for their target model nitrogen-containing compounds with adsorption capacities of 11.4 ± 0.4 mg/g, 11.9 ± 0.2 mg/g and 10.9 ± 0.7 mg/g for quinoline, pyrimidine and carbazole respectively. Adsorption selectivity increased in the order of pyrimidine (αi-r = 241.5) ˃ quinoline (αi-r = 237.6) ˃ carbazole (αi-r = 170). - Description: Learners in Namibian primary schools are seemingly not brave enough to stand and raise their voice on issues that concern them. This is what Shekupakela-Nelulu (2008) wrote after a study she conducted on the Learners’ Representative Council (LRC) of a school in Namibia. She refers to a time when “the involvement of students in school affairs was seen by the regime as a political act and attempts by student leaders to involve themselves in educational issues were often quashed” (ibid., p. i). This situation will be all too familiar to South African readers, where a public holiday, Youth Day, was declared to mark the apartheid regime’s brutal treatment of learner protestors on June 16, 1976. While Namibia has not experienced events of such magnitude, the notion of learner voice is equally problematic and worthy of investigation. The absence of leadership development opportunities for learners has led to this research study which seeks to answer the central research question: How can learner leadership be developed in a LRC? I used an interpretive paradigm, adopting a qualitative approach in the study. Concurrently, the study was framed and guided by the second generation of Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as an analytical tool to achieve my research goal. The following questions guided the study in two phases. Phase one: What were the perceived causes for the nonsustainability of the learner leadership (LL) club at the school? Phase two: How is the notion of learner leadership understood in the school? How is leadership developed on the LRC? What enables and constrains leadership development of learners on the LRC? The research participants were thirty LRC members from grades 6 and 7 and15 teachers who teach the LRC members. The principal and three HOD’s were also research participants being part of the Senior Management team. One of the HOD’s also fulfils the role of the guardian teacher to the LRC. A school board chairperson also participated in the Change Laboratory Workshop. Data was generated through multiple data sources such as questionnaires, individual interviews, a focus group interview and observation. The findings from phase one of the study revealed that the learner leadership club’s intervention was a success during the 2014 academic year, but the absence of the learner leadership club as an extra-mural activity affected the sustainability of the club into the next academic year 2015. Findings from phase two revealed that leadership opportunities did exist at the school for learner leadership development. However, a few challenges emerged relating to traditional views of leadership and constraining factors that could affect learner leadership development at the school. Thus, Change Laboratory workshops were held to find solutions to the challenges, in order to promote and enhance learner leadership development, hopefully for the future of the Namibian child.

- Description: Before independence, Namibia inherited a system of Bantu education which was hierarchical, authoritarian and non-democratic. Upon independence, the educational sector went through numerous reforms which were meant to transform education and to make it more democratic, whereby all stakeholders can broadly participate. In spite of these reforms, leadership of schools has remained a hierarchical system, where a principal who, as an individual, runs the school without recognition of the potential leadership of others. Recent studies on leadership have called for shared leadership, whereby leadership is a practice, permeable to learner leaders and not associated with individuals. This research study aims to explore learner leadership development in the Learner Representative Council (LRC) structure at a secondary school in Namibia. The motivation of this research study was twofold - firstly, my personal interest in learner leadership was aroused by my teaching experience. The second reason was due to my realisation that the area was under-researched in Namibia, hence I wanted to fill the existing gap on learner leadership. The study critically engaged learners and teachers to help me get an understanding of learner leadership and the factors enabling learner leadership development. I also found that challenges which resulted in contradictions, hampered leadership development. The study took an interventionist approach and second generation Cultural Historical Activity Theory was used to surface tensions and contradictions affecting learner leadership development. Change Laboratory workshops enabled the expansive learning process with the 12 LRC members. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, observation, document analysis and journaling. The study found that learner leadership was understood more in terms of traditional views of leadership, whereby a learner needed to possess certain qualities in order to lead. The findings further pointed out that the LRC members were mainly involved in managerial roles and not really leadership roles, as such, and they were not involved in decision-making at the school. Although provision for the LRC body is made in an Educational Act, historical and cultural forces account for teachers’ reluctance to support the LRC members, as well as for silence of learner voice. I hope that findings from this research study strengthen learner leadership structures in schools and contribute to the creation of knowledge on learner leadership in Namibia.

- Description: Sleeping sickness (trypanosomiasis) is a neglected tropical disease that affects mostly the poorest communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Toxic side effects associated with the use of current anti-trypanosomal drugs, which in some cases kill faster than the disease itself, necessitate the search for new drugs with better safety margins. To this effect, a small library bearing different substituents at position -1, -3, and -6 of the quinolone nucleus were synthesized and evaluated in vitro against HeLa cell lines and Trypanosoma brucei brucei for cytotoxicity and trypanocidal potentials, respectively. While most of these compounds showed no cytotoxic effect, they exhibited moderate to weak anti-trypanosomal activities. The SAR studies of this series provide new information worth considering in future exploration of the quinolone scaffold in search ofmore potent and safe trypanocidal agents.

- Description: The Langer Heinrich calcrete hosted uranium deposit is situated approximately 90 km to east of the coastal town of Swakopmund in Namibia. It is run by an Australian owned company, Paladin Energy Limited, along with China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) who maintain 25% of the shares. Production commenced in 2007 and has been ongoing. Carnotite is the primary and only ore mineral, and the nature of mineralisation within the Langer Heinrich palaeo channel dictates westward-directed continuous open pit mining. Smaller-scale 1micro pits target near-surface, high-grade, lenses toward the east. The high variability in uranium grade over relatively short distances complicates the grade estimation process. This combined with a low uranium price, and a study aimed at optimising of mine production is one of the key drivers for the research presented in this thesis. The efficacy of four resource estimation techniques, commonly used in the mining industry, are investigated by application to variable exploration, infill drilling and grade-control drill pattern spacing. The drill spacing includes regular grids of 50 m x 50 m, 25 m x 25 m and 12,5 m x 12,5 m exploration data. Also included is grade control drill data, drilled on a 4 m x 4 m spacing. The current selective mining unit (SMU) is 4mE x 4mN x 3mRl which is an indication of the minimum dimension whereby the loading equipment can separate ore from waste. The two datasets are processed by four estimation techniques: Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW, squared and cubed), Ordinary Kriging (OK), Multiple Indicator Kriging (MIK) and Conditional Simulation (CS). The two datasets consisted of real-time mining data from pit G1 (micro-pit) in the eastern parts of the mining licence, and pit H1 (continuous larger open pit) in the western area of the palaeo channel. The reconciliation project aims to provide results suitable for devising optimised mining strategies, particularly in future targets where drill spacing can perhaps be improved to provide suitable data with a greater cost saving strategy. Along with the optimal drill spacing or combination thereof, a preferred estimation technique can be suggested and recommended for future operations that involve mining of surficial calcrete-hosted uranium deposits. Results of this study show that 12,5 m x 12,5 m drill spacing provided estimation accuracies similar to that of the narrow 4 m x 4 m grade control spacing (blast hole drilling spacing). The 12,5 m x 12,5m spacing has potential for accurate grade estimations during mining, and could be supplemented by infill downhole radiometric logging on a 4 m x 4 m spacing when 1 Micro pit: Small pits within palaeo channel usually targeted for their near surface high-grade ore necessary. In general, Multiple Indicator Kriging (MIK) provided the most accurate and robust estimations on the wider spaced exploration data and conditional simulation (CS) proved more efficient on the narrow grade control data. These results correspond with current exploration practices for surficial uranium deposits world-wide. Deposit type, therefore complexity and hence SMU sizes play a pivotal role in drill hole planning and estimation accuracies.
