Using the case of Centre for Minority Rights Development (CEMIRIDE) on behalf of the Endorois Community v Kenya (No 276/200), decided by the African Commission on Human and People's Rights in November 2009, this article analyses the support that regional and continental rights enforcement mechanisms could provide to the protection of IDPs, particularly those displaced by development projects.

Cytogenetic studies of Pseudobarbus and selected Barbus (Pisces: Cyprinidae) of southern Africa

- Description: The aim of this study was to explore the karyology of temperate southern African barbine species in order to determine the extent and significance of polyploidy within the species. The study presents an optimised in vivo karyological protocol for the small barbines. The analysis of chromosomal data was explored using two approaches; measured (quantitative) and visual (qualitative). The karyology of 16 species of Barbus and six species of Pseudobarbus (Pisces: Cyprinidae) is reported. The study represents an almost complete (22/23 species) karyological survey of the temperate barbines. Chromosome number, arm numbers (NF) are recorded and karyotype morphology described for all species. Nucleolar organiser regions (NOR)s of 18 species have been examined by silver staining. Seven different AgNOR phenotypes occur among the species examined. Chromosome complements of the different species indicate at least three ploidy levels; diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid. Higher ploidy levels are represented in 78% (18/23) of species within the temperate fauna. This finding is remarkable, in the light of global proportions of cyprinid karyotypes, and provides an opportunity to shed further light on the evolution of polyploidy in barbine cyprinids. Results show that morphologically defined species complexes have distinct karyotypes, and most probably form cohesive phyletic clades. A phylogenetic tree was constructed using traditional morphological characters and tested against karyological data. The results suggests that similar ploidy states do not necessarily indicate close relationship between species. This supports a hypothesis of polyphyly for the African barbine cyprinids and also provides independent support for species complexes such as the "chubbyhead barb group" and the Pseudobarbus lineage. The broader implications of karyological findings are discussed within the context of African barbines and recommendations for further cytogenetic research are provided.

- Description: Geographic Information System technology today allows for the rapid analysis of vast amounts of spatial and non-spatial data. The power of a GIS can only be effected with the rapid collection of accurate input data. This is particularly true in the case of the South African National Working for Water (WFW) Programme where large volumes of spatial data on alien vegetation infestations are captured throughout the country. Alien vegetation clearing contracts cannot be generated, for WFW, without this data, so that the accurate capture of such data is crucial to the success of the programme. Mapping Invasive Alien Plant (IAP) data within WFW is a perennial problem (Coetzee, pers com, 2002), because not enough mapping is being done to meet the annual requirements of the programme in the various provinces. This is re-iterated by Richardson, 2004, who states that there is a shortage of accurate data on IAP abundance in South Africa. Therefore there is a need to investigate alternate methods of data capture; such as remote sensing, whilst working within the existing WFW data capture standards. The aim of this research was to investigate the use of Landsat ETM imagery as a data capture source for mapping alien vegetation for the WFW Programme in terms of their approved mapping methods, for both automated and manual classification techniques. The automated and manual classification results were compared to control data captured by differential Global Positioning Systems (DGPS). The research tested the various methods of data capture using Landsat ETM images over a range of study sites of varying complexity: a simple grassland area, a medium complexity grassy fynbos site and a complicated indigenous forest site. An important component of the research was to develop a mapping (classification) Ranking System based upon variables identified by WFW as fundamental in data capture decision making: spatial and positional accuracy, time constraints and cost constraints for three typical alien invaded areas. The mapping Ranking System compared the results of the various mapping methods for each factor for the study sites against each other. This provided an indication of which mapping method is the most efficient or suitable for a particular area.

- Description: The reactions between the lanthanide nitrate salts and the ligand triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) gave rise to nine-coordinated complexes of the nature Ln(TPPO)3(NO3)3, for Ln = La – Dy, Er, Tm, in which the Ln(III) centre is coordinated to three phosphoryl oxygen atoms and three bidentate nitrate ligands. Generally, the geometry can be described as being mer-octahedral, where the nitrate ligands are considered as monoatomic species. The product of the reaction between Yb(NO3)3·5H2O and TPPO, however, was a highly symmetrical eight-coordinated complex, in which the Yb(III) centre was coordinated to two bidentate nitrate groups and four TPPO molecules. The geometry in this case is best described as being trans-octahedral, with the two nitrate ligands coordinated practically perpendicular to one another. The complexes isolated from the reactions of lanthanide nitrate salts with the ligand bis(pentamethylene)urea (PMU) had the general formula Ln(PMU)3(NO3)3, where Ln = La – Dy, Yb, Lu. The complexes were found to be nine-coordinated with distorted trigonal prismatic geometry, in which the one base of the prism is composed of the oxygen atoms of the three PMU ligands and the other base is made up by one oxygen atom from each of the bidentate nitrate groups. The second oxygen atoms of each of the nitrate groups protrude upward, occupying capping positions. The reactions of the La and Pr nitrate salts with the ligand 2,2’-dipyridyl-N,N’-dioxide (DPDO) produced two novel complexes of the nature [Ln(DPDO)(H2O)2(NO3)3]. These complexes are remarkable in that their crystal structures reveal the Ln(III) centres to be ten-coordinated. The geometry around the Ln(III) centres was complex, due to the presence of a seven-membered chelate ring, formed by the bidentate coordination of the oxygen atoms from the DPDO ligands to the metal centres. The chelate ring did not lie in a single plane, but was twisted at the pyridyl bridgeheads to lie above and below the coordination plane.

The reactions of trans-[ReOX3(PPh3)2] (X = Cl, Br) with H2pap were studied, and the complexes cis-[ReX2(pap)(H2pap)(PPh3)](ReO4) were isolated. The ligand pap is coordinated monodentately through the doubly deprotonated amino nitrogen as an imide, and H2pap acts as a neutral bidentate chelate, with coordination through the neutral amino nitrogen and the ketonic oxygen. The reactions of trans-[ReOBr3(PPh3)2] and cis-[ReO2I(PPh3)2] with -(2-aminobenzylideneamino)-1,2-dihydro-2,3-dimethyl-1-phenylpyrazol-5-one (H2nap) and 4-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)-1,2-dihydro-2,3-dimethyl-1-phenylpyrazol-5-one (Hoap) are also reported. The complexes cis-[Re(nap)Br2(PPh3)]Br, [ReO(OEt)(Hnap)(PPh3)]I and [ReO(OMe)(oap)(PPh3)]I were isolated and structurally characterized. The reactions of the Schiff base derivatives 1,2-(diimino-4’-antipyrinyl)ethane (dae) and 2,6-bis(4-amino-1,2-dihydro-2,3-dimethyl-1-phenylpyrazol-5-one)pyridine (bap) with [Re(CO)5X] (X = Br or Cl) produced fac-[Re(CO)3(dae)Cl] and fac-[Re(CO)3(bap)Br] respectively. A series of rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes containing bidentate derivatives of aniline was synthesized and structurally characterized. With 1,2-diaminobenzene (Hpda) the ‘2+1’ complex salt fac-[Re(CO)3(κ1-Hpda)(κ2-Hpda)]Br was isolated, but with 2-mercaptophenol (Hspo) the bridged dimer [Re2(CO)7(spo)2] was found. The neutral complex [Re(CO)3(ons)(Hno)] was isolated from the reaction of [Re(CO)5Br] with 2-[(2-methylthio)benzylideneimino]phenol (Hons; Hno = 2-aminophenol), with ons coordinated as a bidentate chelate with a free SCH3 group. In the complex [Re(CO)3(Htpn)Br] (Htpn = N-(2-(methylthio)benzylidene)benzene-1,2-diamine) the potentially tridentate ligand Htpn is coordinated via the methylthiol sulfur and imino nitrogen atoms only, with a free amino group. These rhenium(I) complexes, with the exception of [Re2(CO)7(spo)2], revealed broad emissions centred around 535 nm. The reactions of the rhenium(V) complex cis-[ReO2I(PPh3)2] with 2-aminothiophenol (H2atp), benzene-1,2-dithiol (H2tdt) and 2-hydroxybenzenethiol (H2otp) led to the formation of the rhenium(III) compounds [Re(Hatp)(ibsq)2].OPPh3, [Re(sbsq)3].OPPh3 and [Re(obsq)3].OPPh3 (ibsq = 2-iminothiobenzosemiquinonate, sbsq = 1,2-dithiobenzosemiquinonate, obsq = 2-hydroxothiobenzosemiquinonate) respectively. The complexes adopt a trigonal prismatic geometry around the rhenium centre with average twists angles between 3.20-26.10˚. The E1/2 values for the Re(III)/Re(IV) redox couple were found to be 0.022, 0.142 and 0.126 V for [Re(Hatp)(ibsq)2].OPPh3, [Re(sbsq)3].OPPh3 and [Re(obsq)3].OPPh3 respectively. The reactions of the benzoxazole ligands, 3-(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridin-2-ol (Hbop) and 5-amino-2-(benzoxazol-2-yl)phenol (Habo) with a [ReO]3+ precursor led to the rhenium(III) complex, [ReCl2(bop)(PPh3)2], and the complex salt, [ReO(abo)I(PPh3)2]ReO4, respectively. A variety of benzothiazole and benzimidazole derivatives were reacted with [Re(CO)5Br]. In the case of bis(benzothiazol-2-ylethyl)sulfide (bts), the neutral complex fac-[Re(CO)3(bts)Br] was obtained. The dimeric complexes (μ-dbt)2[Re(CO)3]2 and (μ-mbt)2[Re(CO)3]2 were formed when 1,3-bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)thiourea (Hdbt) and 1-(benzothiazol-2-ylidene)-3-methylthiourea (Hmbt) were used as ligands. The reaction of 2,2’-(oxybis(methylene))bis(benzimidazole) (bmb) with [Re(CO)5Cl] resulted in the rhenium(I) complex salt fac-[Re(CO)3(bmb)]+, with the tri-μ-chlorohexacarbonyl dirhenate [Re2(CO)6Cl3]- as the counter anion. The neutral complex fac-[Re(CO)3(btp)Cl] was isolated from the reaction of the 2,9-bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (btp) ligand and [Re(CO)5Cl]. The reactions of trans-[ReOCl3(PPh3)2] with bis(benzimidazol-2-ylethyl)sulfide (btn) and 1-(benzothiazol-2-ylidene)-3-methylthiourea (Hmbt) led to the formation of the cationic compounds (μ-O)2[Re2O2(btn)2]I2 and [ReCl2(bte)(PPh3)2]Cl (bte = (benzothiazole-2-yl)-N-ethylidenemethanamine) respectively.

The reactions of the rhenium(V) complex cis-[ReO2I(PPh3)2] with 2-aminothiophenol (H2atp), benzene-1,2-dithiol (H2tdt) and 2-hydroxybenzenethiol (H2otp) led to the formation of the rhenium(III) compounds [Re(Hatp)(ibsq)2].OPPh3, [Re(sbsq)3].OPPh3 and [Re(obsq)3].OPPh3 (ibsq = 2-iminothiobenzosemiquinonate, sbsq = 1,2-dithiobenzosemiquinonate, obsq = 2-hydroxothiobenzosemiquinonate) respectively. The complexes adopt a trigonal prismatic geometry around the rhenium centre with average twists angles between 3.20-26.10˚. The E1/2 values for the Re(III)/Re(IV) redox couple were found to be 0.022, 0.142 and 0.126 V for [Re(Hatp)(ibsq)2].OPPh3, [Re(sbsq)3].OPPh3 and [Re(obsq)3].OPPh3 respectively. The reactions of the benzoxazole ligands, 3-(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridin-2-ol (Hbop) and 5-amino-2-(benzoxazol-2-yl)phenol (Habo) with a [ReO]3+ precursor led to the rhenium(III) complex, [ReCl2(bop)(PPh3)2], and the complex salt, [ReO(abo)I(PPh3)2]ReO4, respectively. A variety of benzothiazole and benzimidazole derivatives were reacted with [Re(CO)5Br]. In the case of bis(benzothiazol-2-ylethyl)sulfide (bts), the neutral complex fac-[Re(CO)3(bts)Br] was obtained. The dimeric complexes (μ-dbt)2[Re(CO)3]2 and (μ-mbt)2[Re(CO)3]2 were formed when 1,3-bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)thiourea (Hdbt) and 1-(benzothiazol-2-ylidene)-3-methylthiourea (Hmbt) were used as ligands. The reaction of 2,2’-(oxybis(methylene))bis(benzimidazole) (bmb) with [Re(CO)5Cl] resulted in the rhenium(I) complex salt fac-[Re(CO)3(bmb)]+, with the tri-μ-chlorohexacarbonyl dirhenate [Re2(CO)6Cl3]- as the counter anion. The neutral complex fac-[Re(CO)3(btp)Cl] was isolated from the reaction of the 2,9-bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (btp) ligand and [Re(CO)5Cl]. The reactions of trans-[ReOCl3(PPh3)2] with bis(benzimidazol-2-ylethyl)sulfide (btn) and 1-(benzothiazol-2-ylidene)-3-methylthiourea (Hmbt) led to the formation of the cationic compounds (μ-O)2[Re2O2(btn)2]I2 and [ReCl2(bte)(PPh3)2]Cl (bte = (benzothiazole-2-yl)-N-ethylidenemethanamine) respectively.

- Description: Service Management (SM) is an integrated, cyclical and collaborative approach to the management of service requirements and levels. It involves the definition of client expectations, the satisfying of those expectations and the perpetual refining of the business agreement (Sturm 2001). SM in the ICT sector is a comprehensive process that extends beyond the development of Service Agreements (SAs). A number of identifiable steps constitute the progressive implementation of a managed services environment, the key components of which are a readiness to provide services, the accurate elicitation, management and satisfying of client requirements and the continual improvements to the business relationship. Unfortunately, a number of SM initiatives fail. These failures can be attributed to a lack of SM understanding, the absence of a fully implemented SM strategy, poor communication and people issues. This research describes an investigation of SM implementation. A number of recognised frameworks are explored and critically analysed. The common strengths of these frameworks and the results of an exploratory pilot study are used to construct an SM implementation framework. This framework is then tested empirically by means of an online survey, and revised in the light of the results of this survey. The framework comprises two distinct phases, namely a Foundation phase and a Managed Services phase. The Foundation phase comprises 8 critical preparatory activities that take a service provider to state of readiness to provide and manage ICT services. These compounds were identified as mangiferolic acid (1), 3β, 22(S)-dihydroxycycloart-24E-en-26-oic acid (2), lupeol (3), aridanin (4), betulin (5), betulinic acid (6), bergenin (7), D-quercitol(8), entilin C(9), entilin A(10), antrocarine A(11), 7R,20(S)-dihydroxy-4,24(28)-ergostadien-3-one(12) and stigmasterol glucoside (13). The criteria for activity were set as follows: an IC50 value more than 10 μg/mL for crude extracts and more than 1 μg/mL for pure compounds. The hexane/ethyl acetate (1:1) fraction of A.klaineanum root bark (AKERF1) and the hexane/ethyl acetate (1:1) fraction of A.klaineanum trunk bark (AKETF1) presented the strongest antiplasmodial activities with IC50 values of 0.4 and 4.4 μg/mL, respectively. Aridanin (4) and antrocarine A(11), as well as the crude extract of D.conocarpa roots (EDCR), AKERF1 and AKETF1 showed moderate trypanocidal effects. It is shown that although temperature was hypothesized to most influence the distributions of these ectotherms, moisture, and particularly humidity, was in fact usually paramount. Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) and C. marginalis (Robineau-Desvoidy) had the most widespread geographic and climatic distribution, while the forest-associated C. inclinata(Walker) was the least widespread. Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann) and C. megacephala (Fabricius) had very similar predicted distributions that were restricted mainly to Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the coast of the Eastern Cape. Chrysomya chloropyga (Wiedemann) and Calliphora croceipalpis (Jaennicke) were the only species predicted to occur at high altitudes. Blowfly distributions restricted to part of the map area were predicted better than those that were more widespread in the region, presumably because species with extremely widespread distributions in a study area occupy nearly the whole range of variation of most predictor variables, leaving little variation with which themaximumentropy modelling method can discriminate between presence and absence of the organism.

The vision is to establish Smart Schools: schools that are reinvented in terms of teaching-learning practices to prepare learners for the information era (SICTE, 2002). Kafai (1996:71) has found that conventional school assignments rarely give learners the opportunity to spend a great deal of time on complex projects. As a result, many learners have little experience in design: planning, problem solving, researching, dealing with time constraints, modifying expectations and synthesizing everything in a project. Research by Carver, Lehrer, Connell and Erickson (1992); Lehrer, (1993); Lehrer, Erickson and Connell (1994); Kafai (1996); Liu and Hsiao (2002) and Liu (2002) indicates that the design of hypermedia artefacts can assist in providing experience in design. To date, no equivalent research has been conducted in South Africa to ascertain the perceptions of learners regarding the creation of a hypermedia artefact over an extended period of time and whether some of the critical outcomes specified in Curriculum 2005 can be addressed in such a learning-by-design hypermedia project. This study shows that design skills and aspects related to the critical outcomes of Curriculum 2005 can be achieved. Furthermore, it indicates that this kind of project encourages interest, motivation and collaboration. In addition, it suggests that learners experience the role of the teacher as different and prefer such a learning environment. In spite of the positive results, some aspects that need attention for future implementation are suggested.

The X-ray structure determinations of [ReOCl(had)] and [ReOCl(hap)] were performed, and in both complexes the chloride is coordinated trans to the tripodal tertiary amino nitrogen, with a phenolate oxygen trans to the oxo oxygen. Treatment of trans-[ReO2(py)4]I with two equivalents and one equivalent each of H2had in acetone afforded the iodide salts of the oxypyridinium-ammonium zwitterions N1-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N2,N2- dimethyl-N1-((2-oxypyridinium)-1-methyl)ethane-1,2-diamine [Hhpd]+ and N2,N2- dimethyl-N1-bis((2-oxypyridinium)-1-methyl)ethane-1,2-diamine [dod]+ respectively. In [Hhpd]I, one of the 2-hydroxyphenyl groups of H2had is substituted by an oxypyridinium group, and in [dod]I, both 2-hydroxyphenyl groups are converted. The X-ray crystal structure determination of the starting material H2had, [Hhpd]I and [dod]I reveals trigonal pyramidal geometries around the central amino nitrogen. The complex salt [ReO(bsa)]PF6 (H2bsa=bis(N-methylsalicylicylideneiminopropyl) amine) was prepared from the reaction of cis-[ReO2I(PPh3)2] with H2bsa in toluene. The dianionic pentadentate ligand bsa is coordinated to the ReO3+ moiety via one secondary amino and two imino nitrogens, and two anionic phenolate oxygens. The complex was characterized by spectroscopy and analytical data, and the structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The complex exhibits a distorted octahedral geometry around the central rhenium(V) ion, with the basal plane being defined by a phenolate oxygen, two imino nitrogens and the secondary amino. ix A. Abrahams Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University The reaction of a two-fold molar excess of the potentially NN-donor ligand 2,2’- dipyridylamine (dpa) with trans-[ReO(OEt)Cl2(PPh3)2] in ethanol led to the isolation of [ReOCl2(OEt)(dpa)]. The X-ray crystal structure shows that the NN-chelated dpa is coordinated in the equatorial plane cis to the oxo and ethoxo groups, which are in trans positions relative to each other. The treatment of trans- [ReOCl3(PPh3)2] with a tenfold molar excess of dpa in ethanol at the refluxing temperature yielded the trans-dioxo complex [ReO2(dpa)2]Cl, but with a twofold molar excess only (μ-O)[{ReOCl2(dpa)}2] was isolated. Repeating the latter reaction with (n-Bu4N)[ReOCl4] as starting material in ethanol at room temperature a dark green product, also with the formulation (μ-O)[{ReOCl2(dpa)}2], was isolated. The reaction of equimolar quantities of bis(pyridin-2-yl)methyl)amine (HBPA) with (n-Bu4N)[ReOCl4] in acetone at room temperature led to the isolation of the sixcoordinate rhenium(V) complex [ReOCl(H2O)(BPA)]Cl. IR, NMR and X-ray crystallographic results indicate that BPA is coordinated as a tridentate uninegative chelate, with deprotonation of the amine nitrogen. The water molecule is coordinated trans to the oxo group, with the Re=O and Re-OH2 bond distances equal to 1.663(9) and 2.21(1) Å respectively. Complexes of the general formula [ReOX2{(C5H4N)CH(O)CH2(C5H4N)}] (X = Cl, I) were prepared by the reactions of trans-[ReOCl3(PPh3)2] and trans- [ReOI2(OEt)(PPh3)2] with cis-1,2-di-(2-pyridyl)ethylene (DPE) in ethanol and benzene in air. Experimental evidence shows that the coordinated DPE ligand has undergone addition of water at the ethylenic carbons, and that the (C5H4N)CH(O)CH2(C5H4N) moiety acts as a uninegative tridentate NON-donor ligand. The X-ray crystal structures of both complexes show a distorted octahedral geometry around the rhenium(V) centre. The treatment of trans-[ReOCl3(PPh3)2] with H2dbd in a 2:1 molar ratio in acetonitrile led to the isolation of the ligand-bridged dimer (μ-dbd)[ReOCl2(PPh3)]2. The X-ray crystal structure of the complex reveals a dinuclear structure in which two rhenium(V) ions are bridged by the dbd ligand. Each rhenium ion is in a x A. An X-ray crystallographic study shows that the bonding distances and angles in the comlexes are nearly identical, and that the two halides in each complex are coordinated cis to each other in the equatorial plane cis to the oxo group. The oxo-bridged dinuclear rhenium(V) complex [(μ-O){ReOCl(amp)}2] was prepared by the reaction of trans-[ReOCl3(PPh3)2] and 6-amino-3-methyl-1-phenyl- 4-azahept-2-ene-1-one (Hamp) in acetone. The characterization of the complex by elemental analysis, infrared and 1H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography shows that amp is coordinated as a monoanionic NNO-donor chelate as an amino-amido ketone. However, the reaction of the similar ligand 7- amino-4,7-dimethyl-5-aza-3-octen-2-one (Hada) with [Re(CO)5Br] produced the product fac-[Re(CO)3Br(Hada)], with Hada coordinated as a neutral NN-donor amino-imino-ketone.

- Description: The purpose of this study was to do a comparative investigation on the acid- and heat catalysed polymerisation and resinification of furfuryl alcohol and the effects of these polymerisation conditions on the mechanism, morphology, molecular weight and thermal properties of the polyfurfuryl alcohol resins. The formation of furfuryl alcohol polymers was confirmed using size exclusion chromatography (SEC); the synthesised polymer resins were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR,), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The effects of polymerisation conditions on the mechanism of polyfurfuryl alcohol polymerisation was a major focus of this study. The obtained results confirm that the surface topology, mechanism of polymerisation, thermal behaviour and molecular weights of polyfurfuryl alcohol polymer resins are dependent on the polymerisation condition. The acid and heat catalysed polyfurfuryl alcohol resin polymers presented interesting and promising results.

- Description: The development of immature insects is commonly employed in forensic investigations to estimate time of death, or postmortem interval (PMI), of a corpse on which they are feeding. The bulk of this thesis focuses on factors influencing the accuracy of developmental data, and exploring how and why developmental data differ between studies involving the same species, and between different species. Because carrion feeding insects are ectotherms, temperature may be expected to significantly influence their behaviour, development and distribution, and the remainder of the thesis therefore focuses on the thermal biology and geographical distribution of seven forensically important blowflies. The species include Chrysomya albiceps, C. putoria, C. chloropyga, C. megacephala, C. marginalis, C. inclinata and Calliphora croceipalpis. A robust experimental design for estimating developmental models is outlined and tested. It is recommended that forensic entomologists should involve at least six constant temperatures, starting at about 7°C above the relevant developmental zero (D0) and going to about 10°C above the upper critical temperature, and a temporal sampling interval with a relative precision of about 10%. Using this design, focused experiments consistently provided the most reliable developmental data, while data pooled from different studies yielded inconsistent results. Similarly, developmental data from closely related species differed significantly, and surprisingly so did developmental data from different populations of the same species. Possible explanations for the latter lay in the different methods of data collection but only temporal sampling resolution had a direct influence on the accuracy of developmental data. Consequently, disparities in such data were primarily ascribed to genetic differences and phenotypic plasticity. Comparisons between numerous thermal thresholds of larvae, pupae and adults support this conclusion and suggest a phylogenetic component to the thermal biology of blowflies. Further comparisons were made between these temperature thresholds and the distributions of blowfly species present on two rhinoceros carcasses. These comparisons suggest that blowfly larvae with high upper lethal temperature thresholds dominate in interspecific competition in favorable thermal environments by raising maggot mass temperature above the thresholds of other carrion-feeding blowflies, through maggot-generated heat. Bioclimatic modeling using maximum entropy analysis provided a successful means of predicting whether a species is likely to occur in an area, and whether it would therefore be expected in a local carcass community. It also showed that temperature was less important than moisture in shaping the geographical distribution of African carrion blowflies. Based on these results, several recommendations are made for the practice of forensic entomology.

These comparisons suggest that blowfly larvae with high upper lethal temperature thresholds dominate in interspecific competition in favorable thermal environments by raising maggot mass temperature above the thresholds of other carrion-feeding blowflies, through maggot-generated heat. Bioclimatic modeling using maximum entropy analysis provided a successful means of predicting whether a species is likely to occur in an area, and whether it would therefore be expected in a local carcass community. It also showed that temperature was less important than moisture in shaping the geographical distribution of African carrion blowflies. Based on these results, several recommendations are made for the practice of forensic entomology.

- Description: The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a major pest of Brassica crops in many parts of the world. Because of its ability to develop resistance to virtually all major groups of insecticides, including Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt), much attention has therefore been given to biological control using parasitoids. South Africa has an abundance of parasitoids attacking this pest. Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is the most abundant larval parasitoid of P. xylostella in South Africa. In East Africa, its role in biological control of P. xylostella is insignificant, and the most abundant parasitoid there is Diadegma mollipla (Holmgren) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), a larvalpupal parasitoid. In South Africa, however, D. mollipla is out-competed by C. plutellae. Total parasitism of P. xylostella in East Africa rarely exceeds 15%, therefore there is a need to introduce more effective and heat-tolerant parasitoids of P. xylostella to that region. This study was therefore initiated to examine the potential of C. plutellae and D. mollipla as biological control agents by studying certain aspects of their biology in the laboratory, as well as the suitability of C. plutellae for introduction into East Africa. Biological aspects studied were: (i) host instar preference, fecundity, and searching efficiency of C. plutellae and D. mollipla at different host and parasitoid densities; (ii) effects of temperature on parasitism of P. xylostella by C. plutellae and D. mollipla, and on their rates of development and emergence. In addition, the role of parasitoids in controlling P. xylostella on unsprayed cabbage plots was investigated. Both C. plutellae and D. mollipla preferred to attack second and third instar hosts than fourth instars in choice and no-choice tests. However, D. mollipla attacked more fourth instar hosts than C. plutellae. Cotesia plutellae laid mainly female eggs in second and third instar hosts than in fourth instars, whereas D. mollipla laid more female eggs in fourth instar hosts than in second and third instar hosts. Diadegma mollipla was more fecund [82.57 ± 32.87, (mean ± s.d.) than C. plutellae (42.13 ± 12.2), and was long lived (7.13 ± 3.69 days) compared to the latter (5.23 ± 2.7 days). An increase in host density resulted in the reduction in the area of discovery (a) and the killing power (K) for both parasitoids. No significant differences were detected between the searching efficiency (t = -1.42NS, d.f. = 48, P < 0.001) of the two parasitoids. An increase in parasitoid density also resulted in a decline in searching efficiency, but not the killing power, of both parasitoids. Cotesia plutellae completed development at all temperatures tested (21-33°C), whereas D. mollipla completed development at temperatures from 18-30°C, and C. plutellae had a lower threshold for development (8.14°C) compared to D. mollipla (10.23°C). At all tested temperatures, the generation time for C. plutellae was shorter compared to D. mollipla. The possible reasons for the dominance of C. plutellae over D. mollipla in the field are: shorter generation time, high production of female progeny in younger hosts, low interference among searching females, and relatively wide thermal tolerance. The role of parasitoids in regulating diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), populations was studied for two years (February 2000-January 2002) on unsprayed cabbage fields at Brits, North West Province, South Africa. Cabbage seedlings were transplanted in three consecutive times each year. Cabbage infestations by P. xylostella larvae and pupae, and their parasitoids, were monitored at weekly intervals. The flight activity of P. xylostella male moths was monitored using sex-pheromone traps. Trap catches indicated that the moths were active throughout the year. The flight activity of the moths corresponded with infestations on the crop. Trap catches and infestation levels were generally low from December to August and high from September to November. Eight hymenopteran parasitoids were reared: the larval parasitoids Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov) (Braconidae) and Apanteles halfordi (Ullyett) (Braconidae); the larval-pupal parasitoids Oomyzus sokolowskii (Kurdjumov) (Eulophidae) and Diadegma mollipla (Holmgren)(Ichneumonidae); the pupal parasitoid Diadromus collaris (Gravenhorst) (Ichneumonidae); and the hyperparasitoids Eurytoma sp. (Eurytomidae), Mesochorus sp. (Ichneumonidae), and Pteromalus sp. (Pteromalidae). Cotesia plutellae was the most abundant parasitoid of P. xylostella followed by O. sokolowskii, D. collaris, A. halfordi and D. mollipla. Parasitism of P. xylostella larvae was high reaching 100% on several occasions during late spring to end of autumn (November-May) each year. Parasitism was lower (<50%) in winter and early spring (June-September). Apanteles halfordi was absent in winter but re-appeared in spring. Parasitism of P. xylostella pupae by D. collaris was high only during spring (September-October). Hyperparasitism was generally low except when primary parasitoids were abundant in spring (September-November) and summer (December-February) when up to 25% of P. xylostella larvae and C. plutellae cocoons yielded hyperparasitoids. The role of other biotic and abiotic mortality factors on the population dynamics of P. xylostella is discussed.
