Furthermore chronic diseases such as type II diabetes and coronary heart disease have been linked to childhood inactivity, and improving cardiorespiratory fitness and increasing levels of physical activity has been shown to be beneficial in reducing the risk of such diseases. In South Africa more broadly there is a lack of information on levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour as well as physical fitness measures particularly in children. Objective: The purpose of this study was to enhance the existing body of knowledge on this, by measuring the prevalence of physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour and screen time of primary school children in a private school from the Makana Municipal region in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where the evidence is most sparse. A secondary aim was to assess levels of physical fitness in this cohort, as well as to compare across grades and sexes. Method: After ethical approval was granted, stature and body mass measurements were taken and body mass index was computed for primary school children (Grade one to seven) from a private school in the Makana Municipality. Sitting stature was measured in order to determine each child’s peak height velocity and maturity offset. Five different physical fitness tests were conducted on the children and blood pressure and heart rate values were measured at rest. Physical activity and screen time questionnaires were completed by the children’s parents for a seven day period. Results: Females were found to mature faster than males. In addition females were more physically active (Females= 916 min/week; Males= 669 min/week) while also accumulating more sedentary time (Females= 1241 min/week; Males= 970 min/week) as compared to males, although no significant differences were found between males and females for these variables. The sample participated in more than 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and less than two hours of screen time daily, which is in accordance with guidelines. No differences were found between grades and sexes for accumulated screen time. Strength increased significantly with grade and age, and there were also statistical differences between the sexes for all three strength measures with males being stronger than females. Females were more flexible than males and no statistical differences were found between sexes for the shuttle run test. Blood pressure correlated positively with mass, as did all the strength measures as well as maturity offset. No correlations were found between screen time and all other variables. A negative relationship was recorded between screen time and physical activity, although not significant. For females a strong positive correlation was found between sedentary behaviour and physical activity. Conclusion: The study was successful in adding to the body of knowledge regarding the prevalence of physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour and screen time within school children from the Makana Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The sample was considered physically active as they accumulated on average more than 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily (Males= 96 min/day; Females 130 min/day), which is in accordance with guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization (World Health Organization, 2018). The sample accumulated more sedentary behaviour than physical activity, although not significant. Screen time was below regulations of two hours daily, indicating this population participated in more non screen related sedentary behaviour. - Description: Due to wetland inaccessibility and limited wetland geomorphological studies, there is limited information on the geomorphological origin and hydrological functioning of different types of wetlands in Africa’s elevated drylands. As a result, there is limited information for the development of a comprehensive wetland classification system that classifies wetlands based on long-term geomorphic processes that determine their formation and shape, their structure and hydrological functioning. Therefore, the current study was designed to classify large wetlands in Africa’s elevated drylands based on processes that determine their formation, and shape their structure and hydrological functioning using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques. Although wetlands perform a number of hydrological functions including groundwater recharge and water purification, the current study focuses mainly on their flood attenuation function. Detailed analysis of topographic information was undertaken using Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) elevations measured at the scale of 30 m x 30 m. LandsatLook and Google Earth images, tectonic as well as geological data were used as supplementary data for developing an understanding of the origin, structure and hydrological characteristics of wetlands. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of wetland environmental variables was used to identify and explain wetland heterogeneity. The results of the study showed that fluvial processes, tectonic history and the evolution of Africa’s landscape played a fundamental role in the formation and evolution of wetlands. This study demonstrates a wide range of processes that contribute to wetland formation, structure and functioning. At one extreme it is clear that tectonic processes may be primarily responsible for the creation of basins that host wetlands. At another extreme, wetlands may be structured primarily by fluvial processes. At a third extreme are wetlands that superficially appear to be structured by fluvial processes, but which have their structures modified by gradual rising of the base level at their distal ends, either through marginal uplift adjacent to rift valleys, or through aggradation of a floodplain that blocks a tributary valley. Overall, the classification of wetlands considered in this study can be summarised into four distinct groupings, with two of these divided further into two groupings each: (1) Tectonic basins with little or no indication of fluvial development (Bahi and Wembere wetlands), (2) Tectonic basins evolving towards a wetland with a structure increasingly shaped by fluvial characteristics (Usangu wetland), (3) Fluvially modified valleys with a local base level at the toe of the wetland such as a resistant lithology or a tectonic control that limits the rate of incision of easily weathered and eroded lithologies, leading to valley widening and longitudinal slope reduction, which are of two distinct types: (a) With a catchment on Kalahari Group sediment that is transported fluvially as bedload, and therefore with no prominent alluvial ridge or backwater depressions (Upper Zambezi and Barotse wetlands), (b) With a catchment that produces abundant fine sediment that is deposited as overbank sediments, leading to channel migration via meandering and to the construction of an elevated alluvial ridge (Lufira wetland), (4) Fluvially modified basins with evidence of gradual elevation of the base level at the toe of the wetland, which are of two types: (a) Tectonic marginal rift valley uplift such that they behave more as depression wetlands rather than as wetlands shaped by fluvial processes (Kafue and Luapula wetlands), (b) Tributary valley wetlands blocked by aggradation of the trunk valley (Lukanga wetland). In conclusion, although few geomorphological studies have been conducted on southern African wetlands because of their inaccessibility, Africa’s surface topography and its historical evolution, as well as aridity, provide an opportunity for illustrating the important role that the long-term tectonic, geological and geomorphological processes play in determining wetland origin, structure and dynamics. GIS methodology and Earth Observation (EO) data on the other hand, provide a practical means for acquiring information on inaccessible and hard to traverse wetland systems. A novel cut-and-fill approach for delineating wetlands from a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was presented as another way in which GIS methodology and Earth Observation (EO) data can provide practical means for assessing inaccessible and hard to traverse wetland systems.

- Description: This study seeks to explore how Professor Ncedile Saule’s works Vuleka Mhlaba (2006), Inkululeko Isentabeni (2010) and Libambe Lingatshoni (2017), depict female characters to reveal the inner resilience women embody. It is important to portray females as bold, intelligent and courageous beings as African women are subjected to major patriarchal myths. South Africa prides itself with a progressive Constitution and Bill of Rights that speaks of gender equality and the liberation of all persons. However, in practice women still live under patriarchal bondages and their efforts are side-lined, thus, the essentiality of writings that contributes towards the empowerment of women through displaying their resilience. Women in literature are mostly depicted as subordinate, submissive and emotional. At times they are portrayed as victims. They are very seldom portrayed as heroes or independent beings. They are constantly placed behind a man instead of in front of a man. This research aims to display women as heroes in their own capacity, without having to be dimmed by a man. The researcher decided to utilise writings of a male author so as to provide a different perspective from the norm that most male authors are known to write about in issues pertaining female characters. This is also deliberately done to encourage more male writers to change the mythical narration about women and start admiring their contributions without having them shadow any man. The projection of female resilience through the gaze of a male author gives hope that there are men who see and admire women’s efforts. It also indicates that men realise now that African feminisms are not against men and instead advocate for equality between men and women and recognise the greatness that could come out of a partnership between the two genders. Women’s behaviour and characteristics are mostly socially constructed, hence the need to exhibit the boldness that black women possess, instead of them only being utilised as nurturing sources and household caretakers. One of the purposes of this research study is to illustrate the resilience that women possess and analyse the forms of torment that women in Saule’s chosen novels have experienced and how their experience engenders resilience and a determination to succeed. The women in Saule’s three novels selected for this study break the traditional status quo. The approach that this paper will utilize is that of African Feminisms, focusing on Walker’s Womanism, Ogunyemi’s Africana Womanism, and Stiwanism as the theoretical approaches. This is because African Feminisms concentrates on the issues related to gender, race and class that African women across spectrums face.

The police officers involved and who were available in the precinct were Constables, Sergeants, Detectives, Warrant officers and the Captain. The study period was 90 days, and the data presented in the form of graphs is contained in the relevant upcoming chapters. The findings of the study were that there was indeed a need for Translators and/or Forensic Linguists in the precinct, as the statistics revealed, by both the police officers and the community members. An analysis of the transcribed material, the interviews with the police and the verbal statements made by the complainants written by the police were evidence of the need for Translators and Forensic Linguists by the South African Police Services.

- Description: The primary objective of this study was to assess the pattern of change in neurocognitive performance for adolescent athletes on baseline measures of the Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) test, over five consecutive years, with a view to providing an indication of the optimal interval for repeat baseline testing of high school athletes. Participants were non-clinical, predominantly South African high school athletes in the overall age range 13 to 18 years (N = 108), divided into five groups (Grades 8,9, 10, 11 and 12), and tested at five test intervals. Repeated-measures ANOVA analyses examined differences in score performance across the test intervals for each of the five composite scores of the ImPACT test (Verbal Memory, Visual Memory, Visual Motor Speed, Reaction Time, Impulse Control). For the Verbal Memory, Visual Memory, Visual Motor Speed and Reaction Time composites there were significant neurocognitive score changes between several test intervals. Taking these results into account, in conjunction with substantial variability in performance, it is concluded that there is a need for annual baseline testing throughout the high school years. The secondary objective was to generate normative tables (Means and Standard Deviations) on the ImPACT test for the five participant groups at each of the five test intervals, including data for: the five composite scores (Verbal Memory, Visual Memory, Visual Motor Speed, Reaction Time, Impulse Control); for the twelve subtest scores test that go to make up the composite scores; and for four additional memory subcomponent scores (Word Memory immediate recall, Word Memory delayed recall, Design Memory immediate recall, Design Memory delayed recall). The results provide a clinical and heuristic normative platform for future use with brain injured individuals, which can be used to facilitate clinical interpretations of postconcussion assessments.

Cybersecurity vulnerabilities are typically addressed through the implementation of various cybersecurity controls. These controls can be operational, technical or physical in nature. The focus of this research, however, is on technical controls with a specific focus on securing web applications. This research investigated whether third year software development students at the Nelson Mandela University adhered to secure coding practices in their capstone projects. In order to determine adherence, secure coding practices were identified from OWASP for the data access layer in web applications developed in the .NET environment. This was addressed by Secondary Objective, which was To determine what secure coding practices a web application developer should adhere to in the .NET environment. These secure coding practices were used to conduct a code review on 2015 third year capstone projects, and addressed Secondary Objective, To determine the adherence of third year software development capstone projects to the identified secure coding practices. The results for the code review were analysed and indicated low levels of adherence which led to the Problem Statement of this research, namely: Undergraduate software development students do not consistently adhere to secure coding practices when developing their third-year capstone projects, thereby leading to vulnerabilities in their web applications. This emanates from the advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the internet and the emerging technologies associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). E-government has essentially transformed the culture, structure and the way of doing business by public institutions in providing government services. In the past, e-government has been popular in developed countries but recently many developing countries are starting to appreciate the need to implement the initiative. However, the implementation of e-government has various challenges that have been identified through research and include technological, organisational and environmental aspects. Therefore, the researcher was motivated to study e-government to improve the delivery of services to citizens in South Africa. The objective of the research was to develop a framework for the implementation of egovernment as a service delivery mechanism in South Africa. The research process led to the identification of challenges that impact the implementation of e-government by applying an underlying Information Systems (IS) theoretical model, namely the Technology-OrganisationEnvironment (TOE) framework. The review of literature allowed the researcher to construct a conceptual theoretical framework which was then applied to the case study in order to understand the factors affecting the implementation of e-government in South Africa. Qualitative research data was collected using Thusong Service Centres in the Eastern Cape as a case study. Thusong Service Centres are government service centres based in rural communities which are used for the provision of online government services to these communities. The empirical data was collected using 22 respondents from five organisational and user perspectives: (1) State Information Technology Agency (SITA) as an agency of government responsible for ICT in South Africa, (2) the Senior ICT Managers from various National, Provincial and Local government entities, (3) Thusong Service Centre Managers, (4) Thusong Service Centre End-Users and (5) Expert Reviews. Documents that included the National e-Government Strategy, e-Government Policy, National Broadband Policy, ICT Policy White Paper were also consulted as secondary data. The conceptual theoretical framework was then revised based on the empirical evidence using the interpretive exploratory approach and triangulated data. The consolidated data from both the literature review and empirical evidence assisted in closing the gap between e-government implementation theory and practice. A detailed e-government implementation framework was then developed with the critical factors that impact the successful implementation of e- ii | P a g e government. E-government subject experts were also given the mandate to review the interview questions and the framework. The use of this framework was then explained in terms of how it can assist government decision-makers in South Africa for the effective and efficient delivery of services to the citizens. The research study has contributed to the e-government body of knowledge through the identified factors utilising the TOE framework at an organisational level for developing countries like South Africa.

A genetic analysis of the species and intraspecific lineages of Dactylopius Costa (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae)

- Description: The Cactaceae family comprises 15 genera and nearly 2000 species. With one exception, these are all native to the Americas. Numerous cactaceous species are invasive in other parts of the world, resulting in considerable damage to ecosystem functioning and agricultural practices. The most successful biological control agents used to combat invasive Cactaceae belong to the Dactylopius genus (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae), comprising eleven species. The Dactylopiidae are exclusively cactophagous and are usually host-specific. Some intraspecific lineages of dactylopiids, often referred to as `biotypes', also display host-specificity, and are used to control particular species of invasive Cactaceae. To date, two lineages within Dactylopius opuntiae (`ficus' and `stricta'), and two within D. tomentosus (`cholla' and `imbricata') have been released in South Africa to control Opuntia ficus-indica and O. stricta, and Cylindropuntia fulgida and C. imbricata, respectively. The `californica var. parkeri' lineage is currently under consideration for release in South Africa for the control of C. pallida. Australia has already released these five lineages, and approved the release of an additional three in 2017; namely D. tomentosus `bigelovii', `cylindropuntia sp.', and `acanthocarpa x echinocarpa'. Many of the Dactylopius species are so morphologically similar, and in the case of lineages, identical, that numerous misidentifications have been made in the past. These errors have had serious implications, such as failed attempts at the biological control of cactus weeds. This thesis aimed to generate a multi-locus genetic database to enable the identification of the species and lineages in the Dactylopiidae family, and to test its accuracy. Seven species were included in the analysis, including two lineages within D. opuntiae and six within D. tomentosus. Genetic characterisation was achieved through the DNA sequencing of three gene regions; namely mitochondrial 12S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase I (COI), nuclear 18S rRNA, and fragment analysis using two inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSRs). Nucleotide sequences were very effective for species-level identification, where the 12S, 18S, and COI regions showed 100%, 94.59%, and 100% identification accuracy rates, respectively. Additionally, the 12S and COI markers distinguished between half of the D. tomentosus lineages (`californica', `cholla', and `imbricata'), with identification accuracies of 100%. The `echinocarpa x acanthocarpa', `bigelovii', and `cylindropuntia sp.' lineages formed one clade. None of the DNA genetic markers showed a separation between the `ficus' and `stricta' lineages within D. opuntiae. Fragment analysis through the use of ISSRs provided higher-resolution results, and addressed this gap by showing a well-supported separation between the two lineages, and between wild populations collected in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. The identification accuracy of the `ficus' and `stricta' lineages was 81.82%. This is the first time that a method has been developed that can distinguish between these lineages. An additional component of this thesis was the creation of three user-friendly R-based programs to assist with: 1. ISSR data processing. 2. The identification of query Dactylopius nucleotide sequences relative to the gene databases created here. 3. A graphical user interface (GUI) version of the R package `SPIDER', which is useful for the assessment of the accuracy of genetic barcode data. A successful biological control programme relies on the correct identification of the agent in question, and so it is imperative that cactus biological control practitioners are able to distinguish between Dactylopius species and lineages in order to release the most effective ones onto target Cactaceae. The laboratory protocols reported, and data processing tools created here, have largely addressed this need and offer valuable practical applications. These include: 1. The flagging of potential new species, cryptic species, and lineages of dactylopiid species released as new biocontrol agents. 2. Validating the identifications made by taxonomists based on morphology. 3. Confirming to which species, and, where applicable, to which lineage, a field-collected sample belongs. 4. - Description: Microbialite accretion takes place via either mineral precipitation, the trapping and binding of mineral and sediment grains, or a combination of the two. Recently, the geochemistry of carbonate deposits, including microbialites, has been used to reconstruct palaeoenvironments and infer biogenicity. Numerous modern stromatolite (layered microbialites) systems are located on the southern African coastline and are formed predominantly by mineral precipitation with minor detrital input. In order to better understand the environmental and biological processes influencing the formation of microbialites, the geochemistry of southern African coastalstromatolites is examined. This is done by a spatial comparison of the hydrochemistry as well as the major and trace element geochemistry of various coastal stromatolite systems. The influence of the underlying geology on the composition of the stromatolites forms a particular focus of the study. In addition, the effect of metazoans on the micro-fabrics and sediment incorporation into the stromatolite matrix is assessed. Finally, the trace element geochemistry of active, inactive, and ancient stromatolites is compared with a speleothem sample in order to test the validity of using trace elements as a means to determine biogenicity of deposition. Results show that the bulk geochemistry of the South African stromatolites is not a simple function of the associated bedrock lithologies, although certain parallels do exist. It was found that metazoans indirectly influence sediment incorporation by increasing porosity and thereby accommodation space for detrital input. Furthermore, trace element signatures could not be directly attributed to microbial influence in the deposition of the carbonates. Ultimately, this study provides valuable insights into the formation processes of the active South African stromatolites and the use of trace elements as a geochemical tool to investigate the evolution of life and determine past environmental conditions.

- Description: Electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a viable option to advance sustainable mobility, but adoption is still relatively low. This has been largely due to the limited range one can travel on a single charge, leading to range anxiety, longer charge cycles and long wait times at charging stations. One solution to range anxiety is to erect charging stations on major roads and urban centres. There is also a lack of real-time information regarding the state of charging stations and charging ports in existing charging infrastructure. To increase the benefit of using EVs, using renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaics (PV) to power EVs, can further increase the benefit of reduced carbon footprint. The main research objective was to design a Charge Scheduling Model for charging EVs using a PV-powered smart microgrid (SMG). The model addresses the lack of an integrated platform where EV drivers can schedule when and where to charge their EVs. The model also reduces the negative effects of the adoption of EVs, including range anxiety. The Charge Scheduling Model was developed using the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology and was the main artefact of the study. A literature study was conducted of research related to SMGs, renewable energy, EVs and scheduling, to identify shortcomings that currently exist in EV charge scheduling (EVCS), and to identify the requirements of a potential solution. The literature study also identified the hard and soft constraints that are unique to EVCS, and the available energy in the SMG was identified as one of the hard constraints. Therefore, an Energy Forecasting Model for forecasting energy generated in PV-powered SMGs was required before the Charge Scheduling Model could be designed. During the first iteration of the design and development activities of DSR, four models were designed and implemented to evaluate their effectiveness in forecasting the energy generated in PV-powered SMGs. The models were Support Vector Regression (SVR), K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Decision Trees, and Multilayer Perceptron. In the second iteration, the Charge Scheduling Model was designed, consisting of a Four Layered Architecture and the Three-Phase Data Flow Process. The Charge Scheduling Model was then used to design the EVCS prototype. The implementation of the EVCS prototype followed the incremental prototyping approach, which was used to verify the effectiveness of the model. An artificial-summative evaluation was used to evaluate the design of the Charge Scheduling Model, whereas iterative formative evaluations were conducted during the development of the EVCS prototype. The theoretical contribution of this study is the Charge Scheduling Model, and the EVCS prototype is the practical contribution. The results from both evaluations, i.e. the Energy Forecasting Model and the Charge Scheduling Model, also make a contribution to the body of knowledge of EVs.

Told in a playful, innocent, curious, childlike voice and reasoning, my work draws inspiration from Werewere Likings ‘The Amputated Memory,’ for its ability to narrate the current without divorcing the past. I draw inspiration from Liking’s way of writing family connectivity and employing an emerging voice of the narrator starting from being a child scribbling to later becoming an elder. Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s ‘Black Friday’ for scanning into young black people’s experiences in a society where their bodies move as misfits. My work also draws from Lesley Nneka Arimah’s ‘What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky’ for the interlinked stories. Lastly the stories in this project take from Sindiwe Magona’s Mother to Mother for humanising bodies that have been reduced to frames.

- Description: Urban domestic gardens are an often overlooked component of urban green infrastructure, despite their potential to contribute to the preservation of urban biodiversity. As opposed to public greenspaces, private gardens are individually owned and managed, thus act as social-ecological systems, where the cumulative actions of urban residents can scale up to influence ecological patterns and processes on a larger scale. The diversity of fauna and flora within urban gardens provide a range of ecosystem goods and services, as well as less tangible benefits in the form of recreation, education and culture. However, little is known about the contribution of urban domestic gardens to urban biodiversity and its potential conservation value in South Africa. This study investigated urban domestic gardens along a socio-economic gradient in two medium-sized towns, Grahamstown and Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This study found distinct differences among urban resident garden management practices as well as the avifauna which were seen within the gardens across the socio-economic gradient. The Garden Management Intensity index was higher within affluent households compared to other socio-economic levels, with subsequent management scores not differing statistically along the gradient. While there was variation within garden management practices, as well as the number of residents who participated in supplementary bird feeding, little variation was seen in the activities which were enjoyed by the residents, indicating numerous benefits the garden environment provides for all urban residents. The bird community composition along the socio-economic gradient displayed patterns directly reflecting the “luxury effect”, where households with a higher socio-economic status had harbour gardens with greater levels of biodiversity. This study showed that affluent gardens displayed far greater diversity, richness and abundance of urban birds. Multivariate analyses confirmed the patterns by highlighting a distinct bird community in the affluent zone, compared to other two socio-economic zones, which housed a second bird community. Furthermore, the main driver of the bird community composition was dominated by vegetation complexity, most notably tree cover within the gardens. Therefore, this study highlighted that patterns of ecological inequality are highly evident in medium-sized towns in South Africa, where older, affluent suburbs households display greater diversity and abundance of birdlife, compared to subsequent socio-economic zones within the study. Prioritisation with regards to the benefits a garden environment brings to urban residents in terms of a connection to nature, access to urban greenery, and relationship to urban wildlife is vital and should be promoted and planned for across all socio-economic zones.

A systematic review of the efficacy of internet-based interventions for depression and anxiety disorders: the possibilities and limitations for feasibility within South Africa

This study is a systematic review of literature that assesses the efficacy of high quality online interventions for depression and anxiety, and that compares the reviewed studies’ characteristics to the South African context to assist in future developments of online interventions for depression and anxiety within South Africa. This was achieved through using a 2010 systematic review of Griffiths, Farrer, and Christensen as point of departure. This research had two aims: to provide an updated systematic review of the literature reporting on the efficacy of internet-based interventions for depression and anxiety disorders; and to evaluate the possibilities and limitations for the feasibility of implementing internet-based interventions for depression and anxiety disorders in the South African context. Databases accessed were PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Included studies must: (i) report on one or more internet-based intervention, (ii) target depression or anxiety or both, (iii) report the effect size or provide enough information to calculate it, (iv) report a measure of symptoms outcome, (v) be a Randomised Controlled Trial, (vi) include a control group that received no active intervention, (vii) be published and peer-reviewed, (viii) have been published after January 2010. The search yielded 2999 potential studies of which 20 full texts were reviewed. Of these, 75% (n=15) of the studies report effect sizes above 0.20, and 25% (n=5) of the studies report effect sizes above 0.80. Themes emergent from literature and included studies distinguished effective from non-effective studies included the use of cognitive behavioural therapy, therapist input and reminders to engage with the intervention, and duration of over 6 weeks. Attrition rates did not differ between experimental and control groups. Sample characteristics between the reviewed interventions and South Africa’s population were found to be different and is discussed. Unfortunately, 37 potential studies could not be accessed and thus not included, although several attempts were made. The majority of studies had effect sizes equal to that of face-to-face therapeutic interventions. Implications of application in South Africa’s context with limited technological familiarity, insufficiency of professionally trained therapists, poor literacy, and high costs of internet data are discussed. It is concluded that with appropriate adaptation, online internet interventions for depression and anxiety would be beneficial to South Africa’s people and assist in lowering the country’s burden of mental health disorders.

- Description: An important yet challenging task for effective ecosystem-based management of marine ecosystems is the reliable measurement and monitoring of changes in ecosystem condition. In South Africa, the National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA) has relied on cumulative pressure mapping, based on the calculation of cumulative impact scores, as a proxy for measures of marine ecosystem condition. While this method is practical for broad scale assessments where ecological data are lacking, there is a need to groundtruth this approach at local scales using in-situ data. The aim of this thesis was to identify potential indicators that can be used to measure the ecosystem condition of subtidal rocky reefs on the East coast of South Africa to groundtruth national pressure-based condition assessments. This thesis constituted the first attempt to conduct a comprehensive assessment of rocky reef ecosystem condition to validate national pressure-based assessments in South Africa. Based on a comprehensive literature review, a traits-based approach was selected to ensure that ecosystem structure and function were included in condition measurements. Fish and benthic community data were collected using baited remote underwater stereo-video systems (144 video samples) from the Natal Shelf ecoregion. Sampling spanned a gradient of low to high human pressures, which incorporated an effective Marine Protected Area (to define reference conditions), as well as areas exposed to intermediate levels of human pressures and a highly impacted area offshore of a large metropolitan port city. Structural and functional indicators were compared among localities and suitable functional indicators were aggregated into multimetric indices (MMIs) to provide an integrated measurement of ecosystem condition. Approximately 840 benthic biota and 10 400 fish (representing 176 identified fish species) were counted. Results showed that functional indicators, particularly size-based ones, were more effective at detecting changes in ecosystem condition compared with structural indicators based on taxonomy. Reefs in good ecological condition had a higher biomass of target species and a higher proportion of large predatory fish with more adults, compared with impacted areas. Benthic communities, however, appeared less responsive to cumulative pressures. The MMIs, using fish and benthic community data, were used to compare condition categories with those from the NBA. Results showed that the pressure-based assessments provided a reasonable proxy of broad patterns of rocky reef ecosystem condition. However, fine-scale discrepancies between results from the data-driven approach versus the proxy method suggested that broad-scale proxies might overestimate condition in some areas and underestimate it in others. To build on these results, the applicability of structural and functional indicators and MMIs were tested using an independent stereo-BRUVs dataset from the Agulhas Shelf ecoregion. Findings showed that not all MPAs were in good ecological condition compared with adjacent impacted areas, as was estimated by the NBA. However, there is a need to improve the quality of trait data and to test indicators and indices in other ecoregions, ecosystem types and in response to a broader range of improved pressure data. Furthermore, there is a need to apply innovative research to guide the calculation of thresholds for condition categories to advance condition assessments.

A vision based multirotor aircraft for use in the security industry

- Description: This research consisted of developing a vision based multirotor aircraft that could be used in the security industry. A second-hand aircraft was purchased and modified. The aircraft made use of a Pixhawk flight controller and a Odroid XU4 companion computer, which resulted in the computer injecting commands into the flight controller. Robot Operating System was installed and used on the companion computer to integrate the vision system and the aircraft. The vision system was designed to help develop a landing system where the aircraft would land on an ArUco marker. The vision system also allowed the aircraft to detect and follow humans. A Software in the Loop (SITL) was run alongside Gazebo, allowing the developed landing system and the human detecting system to be simulated and tested. The developed landing system was implemented on the aircraft, where the developed landing system was tested and compared to the aircraft’s current GPS based landing system. The developed landing system obtained a better overall accuracy , while also taking longer to land the aircraft compared to the GPS based landing system. There were also numerous manual and autonomous test flights implemented on the aircraft.

- Description: This thesis examines how meanings of masculinity and femininity are negotiated by South Africans on a social media platform linked to a popular local tabloid newspaper. In particular it explores conversations surrounding the Ben 10 phenomenon on the Daily Sun’s Facebook page. A Ben 10 is commonly understood as a young man who enters into a sexual relationship with an older woman, mostly in township settings, and readers engage vociferously over the meanings of such relationships. Using a constructivist understanding of gender, a thematic analysis is used to examine the Facebook comments on the Daily Sun’s most popular Ben 10 stories. South Africa’s constitution promotes the right to gender equality and freedom, which contributes to the normalisation of sex in public conversations and political debate. However, with high levels of unemployment and poverty in South Africa, the narrative of masculine success through work remains relatively unattainable. This tension between the narrative of male-bread winner through work and the reality of South Africa’s poverty and unemployment has been referred to as the crisis of masculinity. This thesis will argue that tabloids can play a strong political role by providing an alternative public sphere and that they can also assist their readers in coping with life in a democratic society by creating an imagined community of people sharing common experiences.
