Quantifying the training demands of an amateur women’s Rugby union team using Global Positioning System

- Description: Rugby union is a dynamic sport that has grown to not only be played by men but by women too. The professionalisation of the sport that happened in 1995 developed the game immeasurably including the focus given to its scientific research. This is important as literature on the demands of the game has become vital in improving the performance of Rugby union players (Deutch et al., 1998; Kay and Gill, 2004; Kruger, 2012). Scientific evidence-based data on the physical and physiological demands is imperative in the planning and setting up of training regimes (Deutch et al., 1998; Kay and Gill, 2004; Kruger, 2012). Unfortunately, the growth in the participation of women’s Rugby union has not been matched with scientific evidence-based literature that seeks to improve the performance of this population of players. Therefore, due to the unavailability of match-play during the COVID-19 outbreak, this study aimed to quantify the physical and physiological demands of training sessions of amateur women’s Rugby union players from the Sarah Baartman District, South Africa using Global Positioning System (GPS). The training’ data collected was compared to previous literature, including studies that also focused on match-play. Furthermore, players were categorized into forwards and backs, allowing for the comparison between the two playing categories. An exploratory, descriptive, observational, and comparative research design was used for the current study. The physical and physiological demands of eighteen women Rugby union players (eight forwards and ten backs) aged between 18 – 36 years old were assessed during training (for a total of nine sessions). To inform the participants’ characteristics, the players’ demographic, and anthropometric characteristics (age, stature, and body mass) were obtained. Using GPS and Zephyr technology the players’ training physical (time spent in speed zones, maximum speed, total distance travelled, number of impacts in the various impact zones) and physiological (heart rate) demands were explored. Statistical analysis methods including descriptive, independent t-test, one-way and two-way ANOVA tests were employed to analyse the data and evaluate the differences between forwards and backs. The mean age and stature for all players was 25,44±5,6 years and 1,60±0,06 m respectively, with no significant differences found between backs and forwards. With regards to body mass, forwards weighed 82,0±9,4 kg while backs weighed significantly lighter at 58,0±5,8 kg. Significant differences (p < 0,05) were found for all players in the time spent in speed zones and the number of impacts in impact zones. When all forwards’ and backs’ physical and physiological demands were compared the results showed no significant differences. The average time spent in all six speed zones combined was 11,41 and 11,62 mins for forwards and backs, respectively. The maximum speeds reached by forwards (21,35±5,72 km/h) and backs (22,85±3,88 km/h) were similar. All players combined travelled an average total distance of 2,14±0,76 km. The total number of impacts in all six impact zones, totalled 116 impacts for forwards and 97 for backs. Heart rate responses recorded for forwards and backs were 139±15 bpm and 134±13 bpm. Based on the findings of this study, the training intensity of amateur women’s Rugby union was lower than the demands experienced in the training and match-play of previous research. It was also observed that there was no specificity with regards to the training programs allocated between forwards and backs of this study. Revisionist narratives: locating six Black artist-teachers onto the map of twentieth-century modern art in Zimbabwe

- Description: Job Kekana (1916-1995) was a South African sculptor and teacher who moved to Zimbabwe in 1944, where he founded the Kekana School of Art and Craft in the early 1960s. There were also a few Black Zimbabwean artist-teachers, namely, Sam Songo (1929-1977), Cornelius Manguma (b. 1935), Lazarus Khumalo (1930-2015), Joram Mariga (1927-2000) John Hlatywayo (b. 1928), who were either working with missionaries Canon Edward Paterson (1895-1974) and Father John Groeber (1903-1973) at the Cyrene and Serima workshops respectively and later on at the Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre, or with Frank McEwen (1907- 1994) at the National Gallery school. This thesis examines the relative invisibility of Kekana and the selected Black artist-teachers in the dominant discourse of the history and development of modern art in Zimbabwe. Employing the biographical approach as a methodology, and modernism as an analytical tool and foregrounding African thinkers like Chika Okeke-Agulu Elizabeth Georgis, Emma Wolukau- Wanambwa and Salah Hassan, this research exposes the possible reasons for their exclusion from the canon, which are rooted in a gatekeeping culture shown by actors in the local art scene, including art historians and scholars, as well as cultural workers in institutions like the National Gallery of Zimbabwe who have not sufficiently questioned and possibly shaken the enshrined legacies of Paterson, Groeber and McEwen. Canons mostly tend to tell a story that privileges and excludes others from the art narrative of a nation. With the arrival of Frank McEwen on the scene in the late 1950s the stone sculpture tradition rose to prominence in such a way that it overshadowed other forms of art produced in the two mission schools or workshops at Serima and Cyrene. In the process, Kekana and his students at the Kekana School of Art and Craft were relegated to the peripheries of the canon as they carved in wood and tended to work in a more representational style. While there is literature acknowledging the role of the missionaries in laying the foundation of modern art in Zimbabwe, local artists-cum-teachers working with them are only recognised as a footnote on the nation’s map of modern art. Recognising that canons are always evolving and shifting, and without discrediting the work of the three mentioned expatriates – and to an extent that of Tom Blomefield of the Tengenenge Workshop – this thesis attempts to expand the canon by arguing for the inclusion of the critiqued overlooked six. Citing the efforts of researchers, scholars and curators in multicultural South Africa to bring the previously marginalised generation of Black modernists into the mainstream, this thesis demonstrates that it is possible to spotlight the narratives of the Black artists and teachers who continue to occupy peripheral space in the history of Zimbabwe. This comparative analysis is done bearing in mind the temptation of falling into the trap of glorifying ‘South African exceptionalism’. - Description: Identifying and classifying medicinal plants are valuable and essential skills during drug manufacturing because several active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) are sourced from medicinal plants. For many years, identifying and classifying medicinal plants have been exclusively done by experts in the domain, such as botanists, and herbarium curators. Recently, powerful computer vision technologies, using machine learning and deep convolutional neural networks, have been developed for classifying or identifying objects on images. A convolutional neural network is a deep learning architecture that outperforms previous advanced approaches in image classification and object detection based on its efficient features extraction on images. In this thesis, we investigate different convolutional neural networks and machine learning algorithms for identifying and classifying leaves of three species of the genus Brachylaena. The three species considered are Brachylaena discolor, Brachylaena ilicifolia and Brachylaena elliptica. All three species are used medicinally by people in South Africa to treat diseases like diabetes. From 1259 labelled images of those plants species (at least 400 for each species) split into training, evaluation and test sets, we trained and evaluated different deep convolutional neural networks and machine learning models. - Description: This study describes three internationally recognised sopranos and their presentations of character psychology on stage, during their performances of the famous “mad scene” from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor. These sopranos are Joan Sutherland, Mariella Devia, and Lisette Oropesa. I use Margaret Kartomi’s (2014) model of performativity to interpret the “madness” depicted by the three selected sopranos, as based on my interpretations of commercially released audio-visual recordings of their performances in the role of Lucia. Through analysing these performances with the help of Kartomi’s performativity model (which focuses on persona, emotion-and intersubjectivity, and reception), my research determines – with speculative interpretation, and within the reasonable limits of standard psychiatric frameworks – which mental illnesses the sopranos can be understood to have portrayed in their interpretations of the role of Lucia. The study’s goal is not to make an accurate mental health diagnosis of someone’s portrayal of a fictional character. (Considering the fact that one cannot make accurate mental health diagnoses for people who do not exist.) Rather, my focus is to discover which dramatic and possibly musical characteristics are utilised to perform this fictional character and give expressive content to her “madness”. The concept of “madness” and its psychological characterisation during performance thus becomes the framework from which to interpret and understand vocal and acting techniques related to opera in general and to bel canto more specifically. My research findings are that the three performers use facial expressions, different aspects of using the voice through bel canto singing, and body movements as a way of expression. Bel canto characteristics include coloratura embellishments, fioritura, melismas, messa di voce, squillo and chiaroscuro. The sopranos also show musical and dramatic elements in how they respond to the flute or glass harmonica during the ‘Mad Scene’ – which counts as the personae expressed by the performers. These personae are further applied in the emotional and intersubjectivity and the reception aspects of Kartomi’s performativity model. In the emotional and intersubjectivity aspect, the chorus and other characters singing on stage are read as emphasising the reaction of society on the mentally dysfunctional behaviour enacted by the sopranos. In the reception aspect, reviewers are used to filling in for audience members. I read their reactions as contributing factors in forming an understanding of the interpretations of the “mad scene” performed by the three sopranos. My reading of the three interpretations of the “mad scene” goes further by subjectively interpreting how these sopranos approximate different states of mental collapse. These readings include approximations of psychosis such as mania, dissociative personality disorder, and paranoid schizophrenic behaviour. - Description: Climate change has resulted in a global environmental crisis, with deforestation, plastic pollution, soil degradation, and species extinction increasing. Businesses have contributed significantly to these issues through their manufacturing processes. While many companies have implemented sustainability initiatives, systemic environmental problems persist, and businesses continue to play a significant role. One reason for this is that profit often takes priority over environmental considerations, limiting the effectiveness of sustainability programs. In response, environmental social enterprises are gaining prominence as a potent alternative to conventional business models. These enterprises are commended for placing environmental value generation at their core. Nevertheless, the simultaneous pursuit of financial, socio-economic, and environmental goals can instigate conflicts, including those related to performing, organizing, belonging, learning, and those spanning various levels of analysis. These conflicts impede the intended outcomes of these enterprises. This challenge is particularly under-addressed within contexts distinct from North America and Europe, like Uganda, which possesses unique geographic, political, and cultural attributes. Investigating how environmental social enterprises in Uganda navigate goal-related contradictions is pivotal for comprehending their internal mechanisms and strategies for economic sustainability. This study adopted a qualitative research strategy grounded in the interpretivist paradigm. Employing multi-qualitative methods, including interviews with 20 key decision-makers from 4 environmental social enterprises, the study delved into their experiences and practices. The findings revealed that these enterprises grapple with tensions stemming from their endeavors to balance economic, environmental, and social objectives. These tensions manifest both anticipated and unanticipated effects on organizational performance. Strategies for managing these tensions encompass collaborations with other organizations, experimentation with diverse management approaches, and acknowledging tensions as inherent and potentially beneficial. Nevertheless, the efficacy of these strategies hinges on the organizational context and systemic factors such as government regulations. While facing similar tensions, environmental social enterprises also adopt varied tactics—proactive, defensive, or a combination thereof—to address conflicts rooted in their goals. The chosen response method holds implications for ecological outcomes, underscoring the importance of framing tensions appropriately. Nonetheless, persistent tensions that resurface due to their dynamic nature pose a challenge. Consequently, addressing such tensions necessitates an iterative approach, often entailing a fusion of strategies. To address tensions between social, environmental, and economic objectives in environmental social enterprises, policymakers, governments, and social entrepreneurs should collaborate to institute supportive policies, encourage partnerships, invest in education and capacity building, and establish evaluation frameworks. Status and potential of green infrastructure to support urban resilience in Zomba City, Malawi

- Description: Small and medium towns with less than one million inhabitants are regarded to be the fastest growing urban centres globally, absorbing the bulk of the urban population growth. This urban growth drives the diminishing natural capital within the urban settings, resulting in compromised ecosystem services delivery, thereby rendering urban dwellers and systems less resilient to hazards and shocks. It is known that urban resilience discourse is rooted in robust, empirical assessments of the nature, composition and distribution of urban green infrastructure. Using the concept of green infrastructure, a mechanism for the delivery of ecosystem services that are multi-functional, well connected, and that integrate the grey-green infrastructure while providing room for social inclusion, anchored the research in a small city of Zomba, Malawi, which is a fast-growing city facing natural resource and ecosystem service degradation. The research therefore was set to understand the status of urban green infrastructure in Zomba over space and time as the basis for enhancing urban resilience. This was facilitated by an understanding of the spatial and temporal quantity, quality, diversity and distribution of urban greenspaces and the composition, structure, diversity and distributional differences of urban trees within different urban greenspace classes. Further to this was an investigation on the perceptions of and preferences for urban greenspaces among the different socio-demographic groups and finally the role of residents, institutions and institutional frameworks in building urban resilience through the delivery of ecosystem services. To achieve these objectives, the study used a suite of methods. First was geographical information system and remote sensing to understand the spatial and temporal changes in greenspaces within the city in terms of quantity and distribution. Ecological methods of assessing the tree species composition, diversity, population structure and distribution were also employed. To gauge the perceptions of and preferences for urban greenspaces, a survey was done, targeting users found within the urban greenspaces plus residents that claimed to have patronised the urban greenspaces. Finally, to understand the role of nature and the relevant urban ecosystem services provided towards building urban resilience, remote sensing and key informant interviews were done to enrich the literature searches on a case study of urban community efforts involved in managing Sadzi hill to reverse ecosystem disservices versus Chiperoni hill that was not managed. A general impression of declining urban green infrastructure was verified through the study. The city has indeed lost 14 % tree cover between 1998 and 2018 due to increased housing and creation of agricultural land to support the growing urban population. The city has 168 tree species with 65 % of them being indigenous. Residential areas were dominated by exotic trees, mainly due to the abundance of exotic fruit trees like Mangifera indica. Generally, the city has a good tree diversity score but unequally distributed, with the formal residential areas, where the colonial masters settled, having more trees than the mixed and informal residential areas. Nine urban greenspace types were identified, but there was a low per capita urban greenspace area of 11.6 m2 per person, slightly above the minimum standard set by World Health Organisation. From the preferences for and perceptions of urban greenspaces, patronage to these greenspaces (treated as parks) was highest among the educated youth, a majority being from the high housing density areas where there are no urban parks. Walking to the nearest urban greenspace took more than 10 minutes for 85 % of the respondents. With the available by-laws in support for the governance of greenspaces within the city and the role of residents towards the same, restoration efforts that targeted Sadzi hill yielded positive results through reversing ecosystem disservices that were being experienced by the community members around the hill. The community enjoys several ecosystem services that have also contributed towards building their resilience to climatic and environmental hazards. The results of this study have unveiled several green infrastructure attributes that can contribute towards building urban social ecological resilience like the presence of high proportion of indigenous tree species, healthy urban forest, high proportion of fruit trees, high diversity scores, unparalleled demand for urban greenspaces for cultural and regulatory ecosystem services, the willingness to pay and work towards managing and conserving greenspaces and the social capital available from the urban communities. However, the study also unveiled several green infrastructure related attributes that if not checked will continue to undermine efforts towards building urban resilience. These included the continued drop in tree and greenspace cover, poor governance of the available public greenspaces, unequal distribution of trees and urban greenspaces, poor management of greenspaces, bare river banks, lack of park amenities and a lack of a clear strategy, policy or an urban plan that clearly outlines green infrastructure. - Description: This mini-thesis serves as a supporting document for my Master of Fine Art (MFA) exhibition, ‘Twee Kante van ‘n Storie’. The exhibition explores my culture and experiences as a ‘Coloured’ woman in Makhanda through storytelling. I use the term ‘Coloured’ with quotation marks to remain respectful to those who do not wish to reclaim the term. My minithesis analyses how video games as artworks can be a mode of storytelling and can encourage sociocultural awareness. In my research, I use storytelling as a tool and autoethnography as a methodology to both discuss and influence my practice. For my MFA installation, I have created a digital interactive website that uses the same language as a video game. Throughout my process, I have used two video games, That Dragon Cancer and Boet Fighter, as case studies, in order to help the building and creation of my autoethnographic art video game. My art video game explores my experiences of my culture and living in a small town. Through the creation of four fictionalised characters, which are loosely based on true life experiences and first-hand observations, I can reveal and unpack cultural experiences and biases that I have observed over the years. Each character in the game grapples with one of three prominent themes; stereotypes, ‘swagger’ and texturism. Furthermore, through using autoethnography as a methodology and the researcher as the phenomenon (Ellis, 2004: 45). This study contributes to the gap in ‘Coloured’ cultural diversities that exist outside the lens of the Western Cape experience. - Description: The increase, and prolonged periods, of high ambient temperatures are cause for concern for small mammals living in arid areas of Southern Africa. In this study, I aimed to determine the effect of high environmental temperatures on the activity, body temperature maintenance and foraging behaviour in a population of Western rock elephant shrew, Elephantulus rupestris, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. I found that E. rupestris maintained stable body temperatures (Tb = 37.31 °C ± 0.64) over a range of environmental temperatures (Tair = 5° to 33.9 °C), indicating their ability to remain normothermic during the heat of the day. Under cool, mild and hot air temperatures, E. rupestris were predominantly active in the morning and night, being the least active during midday. This shift in activity time, known as polyphasic activity, is common amongst Macroscelidea species and is a mechanism for escaping thermal extremes. To determine the effect of temperature on foraging behaviour, I ran giving-up density (GUD) experiments on E. rupestris under a range of environmental conditions. GUD experiments yielded no conclusive results as animals did not show a significant preference for foraging under certain thermal conditions, and rather foraged under a variety of air temperatures. Overall, E. rupestris showed risk adverse behaviour, trading-off thermoregulation with foraging and activity for self-preservation during hot periods of the day. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 2023

The effect of piospheres on the ecology of insectivorous birds and their arthropod prey

- Description: Desertification is the degradation of arid ecosystems that result in the loss of biodiversity. Piospheres are areas of local degradation around a central point due to overgrazing and increased herbivore presence. There is a paucity of information regarding the effect of localised degradation on arthropods and insectivorous birds. Both of these organisms play crucial roles in ecosystem functioning and stability and can be used as models to study ecosystem functioning. I investigated the effect of piospheres on arthropods and birds in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. I found that the abundance and diversity of arthropods were significantly reduced inside the piospheres due to the lack of vegetation. Termites were a group specifically negatively impacted by piospheres, with a significant reduction in their presence inside the piosphere. The family composition of arthropods also changed inside and outside the piospheres, with Caelifera, Diptera and Formicidae being the most dominant groups. The diversity of birds was also significantly reduced due to the degradation inside the piospheres. Looking at insectivorous birds, I found that the reduction in both vegetation and arthropod prey availability resulted in non-random avoidance of piospheres. This shows that piospheres negatively impact both arthropods and birds. The results from my study are supported by other literature studying the effects of habitat degradation associated with desertification. Due to the similarities of degradation between piospheres and desertification I make the argument that piospheres can be studied as localised models of desertification. The decrease in vegetation and arthropod abundance and diversity was found to further impact the feeding success of insectivorous birds. Using piospheres as a model for desertification, I found that the foraging effort of birds is significantly reduced within a degraded area due to the lack of vegetation providing safety to arthropod prey species. In addition to this, the foraging efficiency of insectivorous birds is significantly reduced inside the piospheres due to the decreased arthropod abundance and diversity. This shows that inside the piospheres birds spend less time searching for insects and have fewer successful feeds. - Description: Water is an essential component of human survival, with a wide variety of uses such as washing, cooking, drinking and growing food. Covering approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface, water is necessary for all human survival, and is a source of life for plants and animals. Only 0.036% of freshwater can be accessed and utilised by humans, which is not enough to support the rapidly growing population and economic development. This water is further exhausted by pollution caused by sewage leaks, littering, agricultural runoff and industry discharge which deteriorate water quality significantly. To exacerbate these water issues, the major issue of water accessibility is not directly linked to quantity but has been primarily attributed to poor water governance, at a global and local level (in South Africa). Poorly maintained water infrastructure and inadequate cooperative governance have resulted in the establishment of many Community Based Water Quality Management (CBWQM) projects in South Africa, to respond to water quality monitoring and management challenges. The aim of this study was firstly, to investigate how social learning was occurring within two CBWQM Communities of Practice (CoPs) located in KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, namely, the Baynespruit and the Mpophomeni Enviro Champs project (Case Study 1 and 2 respectively), and the potential of social learning to upscale CBWQM. Additionally, it sought to identify the type of support required for the scaling of social learning outcomes in CBWQM communities of practice, along two potential scaling pathways that were identified in a national study on scaling of CBWQM: Scaling Pathway 1(Policy engagement and support) and Scaling Pathway 2 (Capacity building). The research was undertaken as a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, document, and questionnaire analysis to investigate social learning within the two selected case studies. The data was coded and indexed using a thematic analysis technique and an analytical framework as a tool to investigate how social learning was occurring in both case studies and explore the potential required to upscale it. The study found that there is an existing gap between policy and practice with regard to CBWQM support by government structures. Despite South African water policy advocating for public participation in water resource management, there has been limited support from government to support and resource CBWQM projects over a long period of time. To upscale the practice of CBWQM, the study found that capacity building and learning needs to be improved and better supported practically through models such as the 5Ts of learning, and through supporting CBWQM participants’ learning journey to establish learning pathways for them. , Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, Education, 2023

Thermal physiology of juvenile red roman seabream, Chrysoblephus laticeps after long-term exposure to low pH conditions

- Description: Climate change has caused a combination of effects on the physiology of fishes. Of particular concern are the effects of thermal variability and ocean acidification. Organismal energy budgets change throughout ontogeny and research into the metabolic scope during early life stages is particularly useful in identifying potential bottlenecks. The first part of this thesis aimed to assess the absolute aerobic scope (AAS, described as the difference between the maximum and standard metabolic rates) of individual juveniles from a protected population of the endemic, commercially important seabream, Chrysoblephus laticeps, across a range of ecologically relevant temperatures (T = 11, 14, 18, 22˚C) under present-day conditions (pH = 8.03, pCO2 ≈ 420 μatm) using intermittent flow respirometry. The second component sought to investigate how long-term exposure (from fertilisation to juvenile, ~100 days exposure) to high-pCO2/hypercapnic conditions (pH = 7.63, pCO2 ≈ 1400 μatm), would affect the AAS of juvenile C. laticeps over a range of temperatures. Lower pH conditions were predicted to cause a decrease in the AAS of treatment animals due to additional energetic costs of acid-base regulation. The findings of the first data chapter demonstrated that juvenile C. laticeps reared under current CO2 conditions are tolerant to a wide range of thermal conditions, and individuals with a broad aerobic scope will be the best suited to coping with enhanced thermal variability. In contrast to the expected outcomes of the second data chapter, juvenile C. laticeps reared under high pCO2 conditions displayed greater AAS at high and low temperatures when compared with specimens from high pH conditions. Whilst a high degree of individual phenotypic variation was observed in the metabolic response of both groups, this was reduced at the lower and upper extreme temperatures for high pH and low pH animals respectively. Notably, the variation in treatment animal’s SMR was significantly diminished across all temperatures tested, compared to only a localised reduction in the SMR of high pH animals at cold temperatures. This may be indicative of compensatory pathways affecting energy restructuring and thermally-governed physiological trade-offs under hypercapnia. Given these results, juvenile C. laticeps appear to be more resilient to ocean acidification than anticipated, potentially owing to intrapopulation metabolic phenotypic diversity. This is likely attributed to the parental lineage originating in the Tsitsikamma MPA, which is thought to boast greater phenotypic diversity as a consequence of the refuge that these conservation areas offer from exploitation. Owing to the restriction imposed by the availability of surviving, captive-reared juveniles, the sample size used in this study was relatively low. However, owing to the repeated-measures nature of this research the sample size was sufficient to offer suitable statistical power for the polynomial mixed model used in the analysis. Future research should incorporate both physiological and behavioural responses to multiple environmental stressors to better understand covariation between these two traits, and to detect any behavioural trade-offs that might arise through compensation. - Description: This study investigates the relationship between the interacting social and ecological systems within the Pemba Bay fishery, in Northern Mozambique, as mediated by fishing decisions. All ecosystems in the world are affected by human behaviours in some way. In many cases, human effects on ecosystems are detrimental to many other species and can cause shifts in the entire system. In fisheries, the connections between human behaviours and ecosystems are obvious, as fishers extract wild populations of marine species. Human behavioural plasticity and sometimes rapid cultural evolution allow human behaviours to change and adapt faster than many other species can respond which often allows fishers to overexploit marine ecosystems. Many fisheries in the world are fully, or over exploited. Managing these fisheries often focuses on changing those highly adaptable human behaviours. Fishers’ motivations for making different fishing decisions as well as attitudes towards the fishery can be used to understand human interactions with ecosystems when the dependence between the two is direct, as well as allowing managers to tailor interventions that account for fishers’ motivations and attitudes. Most fisheries’ management projects assume that behaviours are motivated by profit maximization. This study investigates this assumption by comparing the compatibility of interview responses and fishing behaviours with rational actor theory, which assumes profit maximization is the only goal. Responses are also compared with prospect theory, which emphasizes reliability of outcomes; descriptive norms, which focuses on social interactions; habitual behaviour, which assumes most decision are automatic based on habit; and theory of planned behaviour, which allows attitudes to be shaped by economic or non-economic motivations, as well as peer opinion and incorporates perceived behavioural control in making decisions. These behavioural theories span a variety of potential fisher motivations which could affect fishing decisions. The study then investigates the state of the social and ecological systems which have resulted, at least in part, from those fishing decisions, and makes recommendations on possible interventions to improve the system based on better understanding of fishers’ attitudes and motivations. The study tests the hypothesis that fishers are motivated primarily by profit maximization and, therefore, rational actor theory is most compatible with fishers’ stated motivations for fishing, or alternatively, that one of the other behavioural theories better explains fisher responses. This section used categorized interview responses based on their agreement, or not, with assumed responses if a particular behavioural theory were compatible. The results indicate that four of the five theories are most compatible with responses for at least one fisher, but that the theory of planned behaviour is the most consistent with the data overall, not rational actor theory. Specifically, fishers seem concerned with behavioural control as well as some non-catch related characteristics of the fishery, such as collective action and sustainability. The second hypothesis is that prospect theory is more compatible with current fishing behaviours than rational actor theory. Prospect theory states that people prefer more reliable outcomes, even if slightly less profitable, than outcomes which are more profitable on average, but also more variable. This section used catch data, and changes in relative use of different fishing methods to address this hypothesis. This hypothesis is confirmed for some aspects of fishery data, but not all. Fishers prefer methods which are more reliable and these methods are increasing in relative use. However, neither catch value nor reliability increases fishers’ opinions of their fishing method, but fisher characteristics which increase options do. This again indicates that behavioural control is important in determining fishers’ attitudes towards fishing. The third question addresses the social system within the fishery. It investigates whether fishing in Pemba Bay is a chosen profession or a livelihood of desperation from the poorest individuals. The study hypothesizes that fishers are as well-off as their non-fishing neighbours, and fishers who use more reliable or profitable methods are better off than those using less reliable/profitable methods and, as such, are more committed to fishing as a way of life. This section used fisher interview responses and household surveys to compare subjective and material wellbeing of fishers and non-fishers around Pemba Bay. The first part of the hypothesis is partly supported. Fishers using most methods have material standards of living comparable to non-fishers. However, they report lower subjective well-beings. Most measures of wellbeing are not affected by the reliability or profitability of the fishing method used, which does not support the second part of the hypothesis. Additionally, fishers using more profitable or reliable methods do not indicate more commitment to fishing as a way of life. The fourth and final section investigates the marine ecosystem. Based on conversations with fishers and local researchers, it is assumed that the Pemba fishery is overexploited. As such, the study hypothesizes that marine biomass, individual size of marine species, and functional diversity are lower in Pemba Bay than in other sites around Northern Mozambique, Vamizi Island, Situ Island, and Nuarro, due to high fishing pressure, and that direct removal of species by fishing has a dominant effect. This final section used baited remote underwater videos (BRUVs) to compare species composition and indices of abundance from the different locations. Again, there is support for part of this hypothesis. Marine species biomass and sizes are lower in Pemba Bay than other sites in Northern Mozambique; however, functional diversity is not different. In these data, changes in biomass and size are not correlated with amount of catch, so direct removal by fishing may not be the dominant source of change in the Pemba fishery. Together, these data indicate that the Pemba fishery may be unsustainable based on social and ecological indications. - Description: The discourse of identity and community are topics of interest to me. As a citizen living in post-apartheid South Africa, I am captivated by the re-emerging wisdom and knowledge of Nguni cultural philosophies and practices. My practice-based research is interested in a creative interpretation of these ancient philosophies and practices in the context of postcolonial life. The project in many ways re-members through observation of socio-political issues such as inequality, violence, and vandalism as reflections of internal challenges of the individual self in current reality. In essence, my discussion in this paper highlights the need for healing grief and loss for the well-being – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual – of society. Self-definition is the core of any community and we see this in the philosophy of the African proverb umntu ngumntu ngabantu, ‘I am because you are’. ‘I am’ is a set of beliefs that construct the individual self; our life’s course then becomes a constant molding of the body and the world around us. The wisdom of ubuntu was, and is, a catalyst for many African cultures, as this law recognizes each individual as important and equal in the community. As a descendant of various indigenous clans originating in Africa the well-being and balance of my being is determined by how much I know about who I am. Consequently, being a part of the generation that is experiencing the transitioning phases from apartheid I question the ways we are dealing with the residue of coloniality concerning all aspects of self; the physical, emotional, and mental bodies of self. My creative work is a reflection of the exercises I implemented to cultivate selfhood as a way to participate in and control my reality as a marginalized member of society. The different chapters touch on many intersecting theories about tools for healing/soothing the self. The creative process experimented with the various concepts embedded in the expression ‘I am because you are’. In the process of this research, I learned that knowing yourself is one of the principles of ubuntu, which teaches me that I cannot be or give what I do not have. The themes I explore through the above expression are self-love, self-acceptance, and self-respect using a creative lens. This practice-based research proposes a concept; the act of love as a decolonial gesture. My exhibition Vuleka Mhlaba Ndinegene1 utilizes visual language to convey the need for more conversations on healing using natural elements, as a way to make a connection between self, the natural environment, and community. In the first and second chapters, the paper focuses on practices employed by artists such as Lhola Amira, Guadalupe Maravilla, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Tony Gum, Lina Iris Viktor, and Aida Muleneh, to relate the various approaches to re-member the severed connection between self, nature, and community. Developing logit calibration model for wildfire smoke characterization based on sentinel-2 multispectral data and machine learning techniques

- Description: Wildfires are complicated incidents that arise as results of both natural causes and anthropological activities. They have long been regarded as the most devastating phenomena globally. Wildfires are considered a powerful natural factor which has detrimental effect on the global environment. This study was aimed at developing logit calibration models for wildfire smoke prediction based on Sentinel-2 multispectral data and machine learning techniques. Remotely sensed data, in the form of the Sentinel-2 imagery, was used as the base from which wildfire smoke plumes were spectrally characterized and distinguished from clouds and flame using endmember selection. The Smoke Detection Index (SDI) was generated to detect the relative abundance of smoke from the imagery. The Cloud Detection Index (CDI) was also generated from Sentinel-2 imagery to detect the relative abundance of clouds. The bi-level thresholding technique was also used to characterize wildfire smoke from the imagery. The logit models were developed through multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network to predict wildfire smoke plumes. The Relative Operator Characteristic - Area Under the Curve (ROC-AUC) metrics was used to evaluate the logit models performance. The spectral signature pattern from endmembers revealed that wildfire smoke behaves different across Sentinel-2 multispectral channels with shortwave 1 channel (SWIR-1) exhibiting the highest radiance value. The signature patterns from endmember selection also revealed the distinctive spectral characterization of smoke from those of clouds. The findings showed that whilst smoke exhibited high radiance value on SWIR-1 channel, clouds exhibited high radiance value in the near infrared (NIR), signifying that smoke and cloud are spectrally separatable in the NIR. The smoke-containing pixels from bi-level thresholding were characterized by SDI values that ranged between 0.089 and 0.561. Suggesting that pixels associated with wildfire smoke are limited to this range of values. The logit models developed showed that smoke is predicted in SWIR-2. The ROC-AUC value obtained by this model was 0.77. The Implications emerging from the ROC-AUC results revealed that MLP model employed on the SWIR-2 band present a viable and accurate prediction of wildfire smoke plume. The findings of this study suggest that wildfire smoke is efficiently predicted at the shortwave channels of the electromagnetic spectrum. - Description: A detailed empirical focus on the social impacts of progressive land policy shifts on women in Africa remains limited, particularly when it comes to urban property rights. This study examined contemporary dynamics of gender and access to urban property in the context of South Africa’s post-apartheid radical policy changes that attempt to address primarily the historical exclusion of blacks from urban property rights and housing. The thesis adopted a gendered approach to the concept of ‘access’ as an overriding concept to analyse the impacts of land tenure upgrading on women’s access to urban land and housing in Mdantsane, South Africa’s second-largest township. This study also adopts a liberal feminist perspective, particularly egalitarian liberal feminism (emanating from the works of John Stuart Mill) to explore how the post-apartheid progressive institutional and legal reforms have influenced the autonomy and power of women to access urban property rights. Through this perspective, the study also draws on several key theoretical concepts to put together a conceptual schema – a framework – that provides enhanced understanding of gendered dimensions of access to urban landed property (in this case housing). In many developing countries, there has been a shift from indigenous land tenure systems to private land ownership. These shifts were caused by several factors, including population pressure, rising land income, urbanisation, and land grabbing. International organisations such as the World Bank, the United States Agency for International Development and Department for International Development have expanded their land tenure reform programmes in developing countries from the 1970s until the late 1990s. These have suggested individualised land rights (land titling) as a precondition for investment, economic progress, poverty alleviation, and a framework for secure, transparent, and enforceable property rights. Gender equity became a growing concern among donor institutions that promote and fund titling and registration programmes. Land titling was viewed as a solution to bring an end to gender inequalities in land ownership. In South Africa, the Upgrading of Land Tenure Rights Act 112 of 1991 (ULTRA) was enacted for upgrading and converting ownership of certain rights granted in respect of land. The study used a case study of women in sections of Mdantsane. Qualitative methods, mainly in-depth interviews and life histories enabled the researcher to obtain detailed personal accounts of the historical and contemporary struggles of black women in accessing land and property in South Africa’s urban peripheries. The findings demonstrate that tenure upgrading produced differential outcomes among women in Mdantsane, and some diverse meanings that women attach to their land and houses in the context of tenure upgrading in post-apartheid South Africa. While tenure upgrading has guaranteed non-eviction for most house occupants (including women), it resulted in eviction for others. Male occupants, who secretly and fraudulently acquired the title deeds for family houses, displaced some of their women relatives. The study also established that these displacements were mostly done by those men who were regarded as heirs to property in many of the urban households. As such, they took most decisions about the formal registration of family homes, thus weakening the rights and power of women over urban property. Among the dominant meanings attached to land after tenure upgrading, women in Mdantsane generally viewed the ownership of urban property – no matter how small – as a form of empowerment, socially and economically. This study also found that after tenure upgrading, other women lost access to the accommodation they rented for more than a decade, even though they qualified to become the owners. In some instances, the politicians fraudulently sold the houses, and the occupants were thus displaced. Poor housing administration by the municipal officials was one of the reasons most occupants lost access to housing. In general, the results indicate that post-apartheid, urban land laws and policies afforded women better access to land and housing. Furthermore, in several instances, titling afforded women equal ownership rights as men compared to other tenure systems. Nonetheless, the history of exclusion still negatively affects women’s access to land and housing. Even in cases where they are not excluded, women still face social, political, and cultural constraints in acquiring urban land. Such a finding indicates that, gender-sensitive land laws and policies do not automatically lead to positive outcomes for women in South Africa’s urban peripheries. Therefore, the struggle for equal property rights does not begin and end with gender-progressive laws. Agile is an iterative and incremental method that supports project teams to maintain the growing demands of present-day organisations. In software development, it is imperative to build software that ensures a holistic user experience and meets requirements. Software Developers and User Experience Designers focus on users’ preferences and requirements while navigating an application through an approach called user-centred design (UCD). The purpose of Agile user-experience (UX) methods is to build user-centric software solutions using the Agile methodology. Literature indicates a scarcity of Agile-UX models to integrate user experience design processes effectively within Agile software development. Hence, the motivation for this study was to create a practical model for integrating user experience design processes into Agile software development for implementation by software development teams. Initially, the study defines the problem that formed the basis for the initiation of this research, followed by the research questions and objectives that are the fundamental portion of the development of this study. This study highlights the benefits and challenges of Agile-UX methods through a case study of Agile software development teams in South Africa. Furthermore, additional best practices are recommended. A survey questionnaire was distributed to software development teams to identify the various factors that lead to implementing Agile-UX methods. The distribution of the survey questionnaire supported the theoretical perspective of this study. Furthermore, Agile development (AD) and UCD are not easy to combine as UCD aims to understand users before software product development, and no activities are performed before development starts in AD. - Description: The importance of commercial real estate is clearly shown by the role it plays, worldwide, in the sustainability of economic activities, with a substantial global impact when measured in monetary terms. This study responds to an important gap in the built environment and turnaround literature relating to the likelihood of a successful distressed commercial property financial recovery. The present research effort addressed the absence of empirical evidence by identifying a number of important factors that influence the likelihood of a successful distressed, commercial property financial recovery. Once the important factors that increase the likelihood of recovery have been determined, the results can be used as a basis for turnaround strategies concerning property investors who invest in distressed opportunities. A theoretical turnaround model concerning properties in distress, would be of interest to ‘opportunistic investing’ yield-hungry investors targeting real estate transactions involving ‘turnaround’ potential. Against this background, the main research problem investigated in the present research effort was as follows: Determine the important factors that would increase the likelihood of a successful distressed commercial property financial recovery. A proposed theoretical model was constructed and empirically tested through a questionnaire distributed physically and electronically to a sample of real estate practitioners from across the globe, and who had all been involved, directly or indirectly, with reviving distressed properties. An explanation was provided to respondents of how the questionnaire was developed and how it would be administered. The demographic information pertaining to the 391 respondents was analysed and summarised. The statistical analysis performed to ensure the validity and reliability of the results, was explained to respondents, together with a detailed description of the covariance structural equation modelling method used to verify the proposed theoretical conceptual model. vi The independent variables of the present research effort comprised; Obsolescence Identification, Capital Improvements Feasibility, Tenant Mix, Triple Net Leases, Concessions, Property Management, Contracts, Business Analysis, Debt Renegotiation, Cost-Cutting, Market Analysis, Strategic Planning and Demography, while the dependent variable was The Perceived Likelihood of a Distressed Commercial Property Financial Recovery. After analysis of the findings, a revised model was then proposed and assessed. Both validity and reliability were assessed and resulted in the following factors that potentially influence the dependent variables; Strategy, Concessions, Tenant Mix, Debt Restructuring, Demography, Analyse Alternatives, Capital Improvements Feasibility, Property Management and Net Leases while, after analysis, the dependent variable was replaced by two dependent variables; The Likelihood of a Distressed Property Turnaround and The Likelihood of a Distressed Property Financial Recovery. The results showed that Strategy (comprising of items from Strategic Planning, Business Analysis, Obsolescence Identification and Property Management) and Concessions (comprising of items from Concessions and Triple Net Leases) had a positive influence on both the dependent variables. Property Management (comprising of items from Business Analysis, Property Management, Capital Improvements Feasibility and Tenant Mix) had a positive influence on Financial Turnaround variable while Capital Improvements Feasibility (comprising of items from Capital Improvements Feasibility, Obsolescence Identification and Property Management) had a negative influence on both. Demography (comprising of items only from Demography) had a negative influence on the Financial Recovery variable. The balance of the relationships were depicted as non-significant. The present research effort presents important actions that can be used to influence the turnaround and recovery of distressed real estate. The literature had indicated reasons to recover distressed properties as having wide-ranging economic consequences for the broader communities and the countries in which they reside. The turnaround of distressed properties will not only present financial rewards for opportunistic investors but will have positive effects on the greater community and economy and, thus, social and economic stability. Vii With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, issues with climate change and sustainability, global demographic shifts, changing user requirements, shifts in technology, the threat of obsolescence, urbanisation, globalisation, geo-political tensions, shifting global order, new trends and different generational expectations, it is becoming more apparent that the threat of distressed, abandoned and derelict properties is here to stay, and which will present future opportunities for turnaround, distressed property owners, as well as future worries for urban authorities and municipalities dealing with urban decay. Academic resilience of engineering students: a case study

- Description: Extensive research has been done and much knowledge exists about academic resilience among youth in school contexts, but there is a lack of data and literature on academic resilience at university level. This knowledge gap is especially critical in disciplines such as engineering, where student dropout rates have historically been high. In 2017, a redesigned engineering degree qualification, the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, was introduced at South African universities. This case study explored the academic resilience of the first cohort of final-year Bachelor of Engineering Technology students at Nelson Mandela University. Mixed methods and multiple theories were employed, which allowed for the generation of rich data for this exploratory case study. In the quantitative phase, 66 students from Industrial, Civil, Electrical, Marine and Mechanical Engineering courses participated by completing a series of standardised psychometric measurement tools. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was conducted on the quantitative data collected from the measurement items. In the qualitative phase, 13 engineering students, 6 engineering lecturers and 6 support staff members were interviewed individually, to explore their perceptions and experiences of academic resilience. Qualitative data generated through the semi-structured interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings suggested that staff and students perceive academic resilience differently. It also seems that staff wellbeing impacts the academic resilience of students, and the relationship between staff wellness and student academic resilience is suggested as a next step for research on the topic of academic resilience at university level, especially among courses with high drop-out rates like engineering. Although not generalisable, it appears that a variety of extracurricular support structures and initiatives and strong relationships between the higher education sector and engineering industries can contribute significantly to students' academic resilience. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Education, School of Post Graduate Education, 2023

- Description: Waste management is an essential service that municipalities provide to residents. The preservation of public health and the continued safety and well-being of both people and the environment, are both supported by good waste management methods. It has become necessary to evaluate present waste management strategies to ensure that they are still effective, due to the rise in solid waste brought on by the growth and development of communities. The primary objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of waste management in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The study was conducted using a qualitative phenomenological approach. A total of 10 participants were chosen for the study and in-depth interviews were used as data collection tool to accomplish the objectives of the study. The qualitative data analysis tool Atlas TI was employed for data analysis to present emerging themes from the collected data. The findings of the study established that a lack of adequate resources presented a challenge to the municipality to provide effective waste management. The role of education and awareness was revealed to play a major role in ensuring that the public is well-informed about waste management. The study recommended that current waste management strategies be reviewed, and new policies be implemented. Finally, constant communication between residents and the municipality is needed to combat issues in neighbourhoods. The recommendations proposed in this study could be used as a possible guide to assist policy makers when reviewing and developing waste strategies. An evaluation of the effectiveness of area-based conservation interventions in avoiding biodiversity loss in South Africa

- Description: Counterfactual impact evaluation studies form an important evidence base for the effectiveness of conservation projects, programs, and policies (collectively referred to as conservation interventions). In South Africa, counterfactual impact evaluation methods have rarely been applied to local conservation interventions, and therefore evidence for the effectiveness of key strategic national conservation approaches is lacking. This study evaluated three area-based interventions that together aim to avoid the loss of areas most important for the persistence of biodiversity in the terrestrial realm as evidence towards the effectiveness of South Africa’s landscape approach to biodiversity conservation. The first intervention, South Africa’s National Protected Area Expansion Strategy (NPAES), set ambitious targets to double the extent of South Africa’s protected area network while ensuring that the expansion preferentially occurs in areas of under-represented biodiversity. The strategy was evaluated in terms of its effectiveness in guiding protected area expansion towards more equitable representation of South Africa’s biodiversity through an assessment of changes in indicators of protected area expansion decision-making before and after the implementation of the strategy. The second intervention is the use of maps of biodiversity priorities to guide land use change decisions outside protected areas. Impact was evaluated as avoided loss of Critical Biodiversity Areas (CBAs), which need to remain in a natural condition to meet in situ conservation targets for species, ecosystems, and ecological processes. Avoided loss in CBAs was benchmarked against avoided loss in protected areas, to contextualize the effectiveness of land use planning as a conservation intervention. Lastly, the effectiveness of stricter land use regulations for threatened ecosystems to reduce land conversion pressure on these ecosystems was evaluated. Key findings were that protected areas are highly effective conservation interventions where they can be implemented, but their capacity for conservation impact is limited by severe constraints on strategic expansion. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 2023
