- Description: Can the local commercialization of natural products contribute to reduced poverty and vulnerability? Commentary on this issue is mixed, with some observers being quite optimistic, while others hold a counterview. This paper explores the poverty alleviation potential of four products traded in Bushbuckridge, South Africa—traditional brooms, reed mats, woodcraft, and “marula” beer. While key in enhancing the livelihood security of the poorest households, these products were unlikely to provide a route out of poverty for most, although there were exceptions. Incomes often surpassed local wage rates, and some producers obtained returns equivalent to the minimum wage. Non-financial benefits such as the opportunity to work from home were highly rated, and the trade was found to represent a range of livelihood strategies both within and across products.

Under these circumstances, conflicting priorities arise and the entrepreneur is thus faced with certain dilemmas. In seeking to resolve these, entrepreneurs must often rely on their own judgment to determine ‘‘what is right’’. There is thus a need for a technique to assist them decide on a course of action when no precedent or obvious solution exists. This research paper examines how entrepreneurs experience and deal with these dilemmas. The research is based on interviews with seven entrepreneurs in established service-oriented ventures, which gave rise to 26 dilemmas. A multi-threading software countermeasure to mitigate side channel analysis in the time domain

- Description: This research is the first of its kind to investigate the utilisation of a multi-threading software-based countermeasure to mitigate Side Channel Analysis (SCA) attacks, with a particular focus on the AES-128 cryptographic algorithm. This investigation is novel, as there has not been a software-based countermeasure relying on multi-threading to our knowledge. The research has been tested on the Atmel microcontrollers, as well as a more fully featured system in the form of the popular Raspberry Pi that utilises the ARM7 processor. The main contributions of this research is the introduction of a multi-threading software based countermeasure used to mitigate SCA attacks on both an embedded device and a Raspberry Pi. These threads are comprised of various mathematical operations which are utilised to generate electromagnetic (EM) noise resulting in the obfuscation of the execution of the AES-128 algorithm. A novel EM noise generator known as the FRIES noise generator is implemented to obfuscate data captured in the EM field. FRIES comprises of hiding the execution of AES-128 algorithm within the EM noise generated by the 512 Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA) from the libcrypto++ and OpenSSL libraries. In order to evaluate the proposed countermeasure, a novel attack methodology was developed where the entire secret AES-128 encryption key was recovered from a Raspberry Pi, which has not been achieved before. The FRIES noise generator was pitted against this new attack vector and other known noise generators. The results exhibited that the FRIES noise generator withstood this attack whilst other existing techniques still leaked out secret information. The visual location of the AES-128 encryption algorithm in the EM spectrum and key recovery was prevented. These results demonstrated that the proposed multi-threading software based countermeasure was able to be resistant to existing and new forms of attacks, thus verifying that a multi-threading software based countermeasure can serve to mitigate SCA attacks.

An evaluation of the morphological and genetic diversity of Eurydice occurring on South African sandy beaches

- Description: This study evaluated the diversity of the genus Eurydice on sandy beaches in South Africa by analysis of morphological as well as genetic data. Type specimens of the three Eurydice species currently known from South Africa, E. longicornis, E. kensleyi and E. barnardi were obtained from the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin and the Iziko Museum in Cape Town, South Africa. These specimens were studied in order to become familiar with their morphology. Eurydice individuals obtained from 30 sites spanning the South African coast, from Port Nolloth on the north-west coast to Bhanga Nek on the north-east coast were then examined. The two species E. kensleyi and E. barnardi, as well as four new morphospecies (A, B, C and D) were discriminated from these individuals by suites of morphological character types. Morphospecies A, B, C and D were therefore delimited according to the Phenetic Species Concept. None of the Eurydice individuals examined exhibited the same suite of characters as E. longicornis. Molecular sequences of two mitochondrial markers, cytochrome c oxidase 1 and 16S rRNA were analysed using both distance- and monophyly based methods. Uncorrected p-distances, a Minimum Spanning Haplotype Network and Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic trees were investigated to determine genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in the six Eurydice morphospecies. Results from the genetic analysis made it possible to delimit morphospecies A B, C and D as phylospecies A, B, C and D according to the Phylogenetic Species Concept, thereby validating the species status of four new Eurydice species, provisionally called Eurydice A, Eurydice B, Eurydice C and Eurydice D. This increases the total number of Eurydice species from South Africa to seven, of which six form part of the macrofauna of sandy beaches. The outcomes of this study represent an important step in the resolution of the taxonomy of the genus Eurydice in South Africa and enhance current knowledge of the biodiversity of sandy beach macrofauna, thus facilitating better-informed decisions on conservation policies and management to the benefit of conservation of biodiversity on sandy beaches in South Africa.

Currently Activate is committed to informing Rhodes University students, staff and community members about relevant issues, mainly on campus. These issues range from hard news to more creative journalism. While Activate acts as a news source, one of its main objectives it to be accessible as a training ground for student journalists. The newspaper is run entirely by the students and is published twice a term. Activate is a free newspaper which receives an annual grant from the Rhodes University Student Representative Council, however, majority of its revenue is generated through advertising.

- Description: Mossel Bay is internationally recognised as one of the centres of abundance of white sharks in South Africa. During 2008 – 2010 there were four sites within the bay i.e. Seal Island, Hartenbos, Kleinbrak and Grootbrak, which were sampled to gain insight into the population dynamics of this species. Currently, life history information on white sharks in this area is limited. This study used a combination of mark-recapture using photographic identification techniques and sight per unit effort methods. Inter-annual, seasonal and spatial patterns in abundance are assessed. The effects of environmental parameters on abundance are also investigated. Photographic identification techniques were employed to identify unique individuals within the sampled population. This modified mark-recapture approach is therefore non-invasive and cost-effective. Open population POPAN parameterization was used to analyse the data in software program MARK. The total population was estimated at 389 sharks (351 – 428; 95 percent CI). Over the three year period, a marginal (yet non-significant) decline in numbers was observed, in terms of both monthly and seasonal population estimates. Sightings per unit effort data were collected during sampling trips. The relative abundance and body size composition of white sharks demonstrated significant spatial and seasonal variation. The highest and lowest relative abundance was observed at Seal Island and Hartenbos, respectively, and is likely attributed to prey availability. Although white sharks were present year-round in Mossel Bay, the highest relative abundance occurred during summer and the lowest relative abundance occurred during spring. White sharks were grouped into three main size classes based on estimated total length (TL): Young of the year (YOY) (125 – 174cm), juvenile (175 – 324cm) and adult (325 – 524cm). YOY white sharks were most prevalent at Grootbrak, with juvenile and adult individuals concentrating at Seal Island. Although most size classes were present throughout the year, seasonal differences were observed. YOY individuals were most abundant in the autumn months, juvenile size-classes appeared to concentrate in the study area during winter, and the adult individuals were most abundant in the spring months. Overall, there was a high concentration of white sharks ranging in size between 175 – 324cm TL, and it was thus hypothesised that Mossel Bay represents an interim nursery or grow out area for white sharks in South Africa. Data collected from 2008 and 2009 was used to investigate the relationship between specific environmental parameters, i.e. sea surface temperature and vertical water clarity, in relation to the relative abundance of white sharks. Sea surface temperature and vertical water clarity observed in this study ranged from 9.3 - 22.7°C and 0 – 10m, respectively. Sea surface temperature did not have a significant influence on the relative abundance of white sharks and this may be attributed to the thermoregulatory capacity of the species. Vertical water clarity, however, did significantly influence the relative abundance.
