However, despite many studies, the relationship between dolerites and volcanic basalts of this LIP (also known as the Karoo Large Igneous Province or KLIP) remains unsolved, because of poorly linked age dates (timing), geochemistry and emplacement mechanisms. This problem is in part because different unreliable dating techniques with large margin of errors have been applied This study aims to address these issues by performing new geo chemical and high resolution geochronological analyses on a number of dolerites (sills and dykes), volcanic s also referred to in the literature as the Drakensberg flood basalts) and samples from drill cores and field outcrops. This project is focused on dolerites in the Eastern Cape Province and provides results from field mapping of dolerites (sills and dykes) from the sea level to an elevation of circa 1350 metres above sea level (MASL) and their link to the volcanic in the Eastern Cape Province. The dolerite dykes observed trends from metres to hundreds of kilometres and cut across volcanic, which have similar geochemistry. The intrusive dolerites collected from the field and from d rill core samples were likely emplaced by magma infiltration through pre-existing sub vertical brittle fractures and fissures and then emplaced horizontally as sills circa 183 Ma Detailed fracture mapping across host rock to the dolerite was carried out to test if they acted as possible pathways for magmatic emplacements. The dolerite dykes and fractures mapped in the host sedimentary rocks have a dominant NW direction, especially towards volcanic basalts. The project provides tests based on the geochemical relationships of the dolerites and basalts from sixty-six (66) cores and field outcrop samples. The results confirm that the chemical analyses from the volcanic basalts an d dolerites are closely related and reveal that most samples are Ocean Island Basalt OIB), but some also reveal subduction related processes. This is consistent with models that suggest subduction along south west Gondwana may have influenced plumemagmatism derived from the lower mantle that initiated break up of this supercontinent e.g de Wit and Stern 1981 Storey et al , 1992 ; Torsvik et al., 2006 and Burke et al., 2008)

- Description: Cross flow wind turbines are not unique. The performance of Savonius and Darrieus turbines is well documented. Both share the advantage of being able to accept fluid flow from any direction. The Savonius is drag based and hence has poor power output while the Darrieus is lift based. Due to the fact that the Darrieus has fixed blades the fluid flow through the rotor does not result in optimal lift being generated at all points in the rotation circle. A drawback of the Darrieus system is that it has to operate at a high tip-to wind-speed ratio to obtain reasonable performance with the fixed blades. Deviation from a small optimal range of tip speed ratios results in poor performance. The Darrieus also has poor starting torque. The research conducted in this project focused on overcoming the shortcomings of other turbines and developing an effective cross flow turbine capable of good performance. A number of different concepts were experimented with, however all were based on a symmetrical aerofoil presented to the actual relative airflow at an angle that would produce the highest lift force at all times. The lift force was then utilized to generate movement and to do work on an electrical generator. All concepts contemplated were researched to ascertain their appropriateness for the intended application. During development of the final experimental platform and after lodging of a provisional patent (RSA 2007/00927) it was ascertained that the design shared some similarities with an American patent 5503525 dated 28/4/1994. This patent employed complex electronic sensing and control equipment for control of blade angle. This was thought to be overly complex and costly, particularly for small scale wind energy generation applications and a simpler mechanical solution was sought in the design of the final experimental platform used in this project. The design of the mechanical control system was refined in an attempt to make it simpler, more durable and employ the least number of moving parts. Literature studies and patent searches conducted, suggested that the mechanical control system as developed for the final experimental platform was unique. The enormous variation in the power available from the wind at the different wind speeds likely to be encountered by the device necessitated some means of control. In high wind conditions control of the amount of wind power into the device was deemed to be the preferable means of control. A number of different concepts to achieve this were devised and tested. The final concept employed limited the tail angle deflection and hence the lift produced by the aerofoils. This resulted in a seamless “throttle” control allowing the device to be used in any wind strength by adjusting the control to a position that resulted in the device receiving a suitable amount of power from the wind. The outcome of performance tests conducted indicated that the device has the potential to be developed into a viable wind turbine for both small and large scale applications. The ability to control the power input from the wind to the machine from zero to a maximum is considered to be one of the most beneficial outcomes of this project and together with the quiet operation and low speed, are considered the main advantages of the device over existing wind turbine designs. The possibilities of using the device to compress air for energy storage are exciting avenues that warrant further research.

- Description: Cross flow wind turbines are not unique. The performance of Savonius and Darrieus turbines is well documented. Both share the advantage of being able to accept fluid flow from any direction. The Savonius is drag based and hence has poor power output while the Darrieus is lift based. Due to the fact that the Darrieus has fixed blades the fluid flow through the rotor does not result in optimal lift being generated at all points in the rotation circle. A drawback of the Darrieus system is that it has to operate at a high tip-to wind-speed ratio to obtain reasonable performance with the fixed blades. Deviation from a small optimal range of tip speed ratios results in poor performance. The Darrieus also has poor starting torque. The research conducted in this project focused on overcoming the shortcomings of other turbines and developing an effective cross flow turbine capable of good performance. Their presence in water and food has been greatly associated with faecal contamination. This study was aimed at evaluating the incidence of Enterococcus species in cow dung and environmental water sources in three commercial dairy farms. In addition, their antibiotic profiles were determined as well as resistance and virulence genes. Furthermore, the genetic relatedness of the isolates was determined by molecular typing method (RAPD PCR). Three hundred and thirty four water and faecal samples consisting of 117, 116 and 101 were collected from Seven Star Middle Drift and Fort Hare Dairy trusts respectively. Of the 334 samples collected, 289 were of faecal origin and 45 from water sources within the farms. All samples were screened for enterococci using culture base growth media and molecular methods targeting the tuf gene. Speciation was done using species-specific primers and the incidences of various species within the farms determined. Furthermore resistance to antibiotics and multidrug-resistant phenotypes were established using the disk diffusion method. Genes coding for virulence and resistance were also determined. From the samples collected, 313 (289 faecal and 24 water) presumptive enteroccocci were isolated, 305 of 313 (97.45 percent) were confirmed as Enterococcus of which 239 of 305 (78.38 percent) were identified as E. hirae, 15 of 305 (4.92 percent) as E. faecium, 12/305 (3.93 percent) as E. durans, 6 of 305 (1.97 percent) as E. faecalis and 33 of 305 (10.82 percent) were unidentified. Out of the five virulence genes that were targeted in the study only gelE (71.80 percent of 219/305) and ace (27.2 percent 83/305) were present in the isolates. Phenotypic resistance to antibiotics was observed is in all twelve antibiotics tested with multidrug resistance phenotypes detected in some enterococcal isolates most predominant in Seven Star and Middledrift dairy trust. Finally RAPD profiles of the isolates showed high relatedness between the strains from water and cow dung sources in all three commercial dairy farms suggesting possible contamination from cow dung to the water sources or vice versa.

Such competencies enable a clear focus on the business of construction and the management of projects, with increased efficiency and reduced costs as a benefit. The objective of the MSc (Built Environment) treatise study were to determine the current practices and performance of emerging civil engineering construction contractors operating in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole. The descriptive method was adopted in the empirical study. The salient findings of the study are: most of the emerging civil engineering construction contracting organisations lack construction management competencies; construction resources are inappropriately managed leading to construction failures; most of the emerging civil engineering construction contracting organisations lack adequate supervision resulting to poor workmanship; there is a shortage of skilled labour amongst emerging civil engineering construction contractors; procurement processes are inappropriate leading to under capacitated emerging civil engineering construction contracting organisations being awarded contracts; most emerging civil engineering construction contracting organisations lack the requisite aptitude for construction; there is a lack of capacity at all management levels of emerging civil engineering construction organisations in managing the business of construction and that of projects; the nine functions of organisations are not comprehensively represented, and self-ratings indicate inadequacy relative to the management function of control, and relative to certain activities of the organising function. Conclusions include that emerging civil engineering construction contracting organisations need to be comprised of technical teams that possess adequate competencies and that use the construction technology to its full use enabling their organisations to stay abreast of their competitors. Recommendations that can contribute towards improving the status quo include: formal civil engineering and construction management education, resources must be present and training should be promoted throughout the industry at all levels of management to ensure proper supervision and correct use of adequately trained labour, skilled or semi-skilled, incapacitated emerging civil engineering construction contractors should be awarded contracts through appropriately and structured procurement procedures, adequate aptitude in construction should be promoted and enhanced in order to realise conceptualisation and visualisation capabilities, comply with legislation, maintain records and communicate using state of the art technology, optimally manage the finances, have the requisite resources and undertake the work efficiently, interact with the respective publics, and market the organisation to ensure sustainability thereof.

This review adds new information about 70 African Artemia sites and lists 26 potential sites and their coordinates. Sixteen sites in Southern Africa and Namibia were visited during a collecting trip, and new information on the reproductive mode of nine of these sites is given. Several South African populations exhibit bisexual reproduction. In Namibia there are two parthenogenetic populations (Walvis Bay and Swartkops) and an additional bisexual population (Hentie's Bay). A mixed population (bisexual and parthenogenetic reproduction at the same site) was found at Coega, South Africa.

- Description: The Standard Bank National Arts Festival is an annual event which invades the City of Grahamstown in early July. Over the years, it has become an important national cultural showcase of theatre, dance, music, and fine art. It also attracts a wide variety of handicraft and hone industry vendors, which together with other peripheral activities, transforms the City into a bustling place imbued with a festive atmosphere. Source of introduced populations of Hemidactylus mabouia (Moreau de Jonnès, 1818) into the Eastern Cape Province and the potential spread to other South African regions

- Description: Human movements globally have resulted in dispersal and introduction of terrestrial and marine organisms into areas outside of their native range. Species that have been introduced to new habitats can either be alien (not causing any harm to the new environment) or invasive alien species (destroying or competing with the indigenous species for resources). Investigating the source of these introductions is important as it provides baseline information about their biology and evolution. It also allows for better prevention measures for future invasions and for effective conservation strategies. In this study, I investigate the source of the introduced populations of tropical house geckos Hemidactylus mabouia in the Eastern Cape Province using two mitochondrial gene regions, ribosomal 16S and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 (ND4). We also look at the potential spread of these species using species distribution models (SDMs). The phylogeny showed that the introduced populations into the Eastern Cape were genetically similar to both H. mabouia lineages found in Central & Southern Africa. The phylogeny produced two clades from which the majority of the introduced samples were grouped in a clade with samples from Angola, DRC, and Mozambique, and only a few nested within the second clade with the South African native population. Haplotype networks from both genes also showed two clades, matching those found in the phylogeny. The introduced samples were associated with samples from Angola and those from South Africa (native) as these localities had a number of shared haplotypes. SDMs showed less evidence that these individuals could naturally move west down the coast as the probability of occurrence was below 0.4 from the Eastern Cape to the Western Cape. Our conclusion was that the introductions may be due to multiple avenues like species moving down the east coast or human translocation including trade routes. From this we can conclude that geckos are largely translocated through human movement as they are known for their opportunistic behaviours as they are commensal with humans. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 2023
