The genetic diversity and conservation biology of the rare terrestrial snail genus Prestonella

- Description: Prestonella bowkeri and Prestonella nuptialis are montane specialists endemic to the southern Great Escarpment of South Africa. Phylogeographic analyses of these species based on mitochondrial markers CO1 and 16S reveal extremely high levels of divergence between populations indicating a lack of gene flow between populations. This is not surprising, because P. nuptialis and P. bowkeri have limited dispersal capacity, low vagility, a highly fragmented distribution and are habitat specialists that are restricted to isolated mesic refugia associated with waterfalls and montane seepages. A relaxed Bayesian clock estimate suggests that populations diverged from one another during the mid-late Miocene (12.5-7 MYA) which coincides with the modern trends of seasonal aridity which began during the Miocene. This result should be viewed with caution because the rates used are at best imprecise estimates of mutation rates in snails. There is no clear dichotomy between the two species and P. bowkeri is paraphyletic with respect to P. nuptialis, as a consequence the taxonomy is unclear. Due to the high levels of sequence divergence between populations they may be considered as evolutionary significant units (ESU’s). An assessment of haplotype diversity (h) and nucleotide diversity (π) reveals that populations in the western part of the Great Escarpment are more genetically depauperate than populations in the east. Correlations between genetic diversity and climatic variables show that genetically depauperate populations are found in areas that have lower annual rainfall, less reliable rainfall and higher potential evaporation, all factors associated with a drier, less mesic environment that increases the chances of a population bottleneck. This indicates that a shift towards a more arid environment may be a driver of genetic erosion. Historical climate change may thus have affected the amount and distribution of genetic diversity across the Great Escarpment since the Miocene. This has serious future implications for the survival of Prestonella. With predicted increase in global temperatures, climate change in South Africa is likely to result in range contraction and an eastward range shift for many species in the drier central and western areas (Erasmus et al. 2002) and regions along the Great Escarpment are likely to become more arid. Prestonella populations found living on inselbergs along the Great Escarpment are already restricted to site specific watercourses and seepages. An increase in the periods between stream flow, and increasing rainfall variability and mean annual potential evaporation are likely to have an adverse affect on species living in these habitats, resulting in further bottlenecks and possibly local extinction. An IUCN assessment of P. nuptialis and P. bowkeri suggests that these two species are probably endangered. The issue surrounding the conservation of Prestonella species is that they are threatened by global climate change, which cannot be simply restricted or prevented, which makes dealing with the threat of climate change difficult. Assisted migration (MA) may be considered as a method to prevent possible future extinctions of Prestonella populations, but will only be considered as a last resort. The thermal tolerance (Arrhenius breaking temperature and flat-line temperature) of individual snails from three Prestonella populations (one forest population and two thicket populations) were assessed using infrared sensors that detected changes in heart rate with increasing temperature. The forest population had a significantly lower Arrhenius breaking temperature (ABT) and flat-line temperature (FLT) than the two thicket population (p<0.05). Our results do not show a correlation between upper thermal limits and maximum habitat temperatures or other climatic variables in Prestonella populations. Although no correlation is found between ABT and maximum habitat temperature, it is likely that the differences seen between these populations are due to local micro-climate adaptation. The climatic variables used in this experiment are coarse estimates from GIS data and do not reflect actual microhabitat conditions. Forest environments are less heat stressed than thicket environments due to the forest canopy which may explain the lower ABT and FLT of the forest population.

Systematics and biogeography of forest snails, chondrocyclus (mollusca: gastropoda: caenogastropoda: cyclophoridae) in Southern Africa

- Description: This study presents a molecular phylogeny and systematic revision of Chondrocyclus, the major South African group of the large family of operculate terrestrial molluscs, the Cyclophoridae. Chondrocyclus snails are small gastropods found in forest and moist thicket throughout South Africa. This is the first detailed systematic treatment of a group of Cyclophoridae in mainland Africa and the first to provide molecular data. This study complements regional studies on the systematics of the family in Asia and provides comparative data for studies of higher level relationships within the Cyclophoridae. Phylogenetic reconstruction by BI and ML methods of combined and single gene datasets of 16S and CO 1 all showed Chondrocyclus to be monophyletic and recovered five well-supported clades that corresponded to groups of populations identifiable on the basis of combinations of morphological characters. Species were diagnosed morphologically and were shown to be genetically distinct lineages. Informative morphological features include shell dimensions, protoconch, periostracum, operculum, radula and penis. Two species in Afromontane regions of Zimbabwe and Malawi respectively are excluded from Chondrocyclus based on morphology and tentatively placed in Cyathopoma. Diversity recognised within the genus more than doubled, from a previous seven South African species to seventeen. Re-descriptions of established species and descriptions of new species are provided, together with photographs of morphological characteristics. New taxon names and nomenclatural acts within it are disclaimed and are therefore not available in the sense of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature until validly published elsewhere. Several cryptic species within previously widespread “species” and unrecorded narrowly endemic species were documented. The clade consisting of populations of “Chondrocyclus isipingoensis”, now considered to be a species complex, was sister to a group containing the other four clades. The “Isipingoensis” clade occurs widely in Afromontane regions, along the Great Escarpment, and on the south-east coast. The other four clades occur from Zululand to the Cape Peninsula with a pattern of east-west lineage turnover. The biogeography of Chondrocyclus is interpreted by comparison with concordant patterns in other terrestrial molluscs and unrelated taxa with poor dispersal ability. This study complements other research on composition, spatial distribution and phylogenetic diversity of low-vagility invertebrates and expands the data available for biodiversity conservation in South Africa.

The influence of social media on the intention to vote for student political organisations in the Eastern Cape

The main objectives included measuring the influence of predictor variables such as medium credibility, message credibility, tie strength with peers, identification with the peers, peer communication, user trust, information credibilit on the intention to vote. To measure these hypothesised relationships a conceptual model was developed for the study. Data collection was conducted in the Eastern Cape in which 381 participants were surveyed. To analyse the data the two stage structural equation modeling approach was adopted in which confimatory factor analysis and hypothesis testing was adopted. This was conducted ulitising Structural equation modelling. The main findings of the study were that all the proposed hypotheses were supported with the exception of that of peer commnication and tie strength with peers on the intention to vote. It was also important to note that identification with peers had the strongest impact on the intention to vote while the message credibility had the weakest. The implication was that users feel that the ability to identify with each other influenced their voting intentions however the message itself was irrelevant.

Historical biogeography of the tribe Platypleurini Schmidt, 1918 (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) with a focus on Southern Africa

- Description: With our contemporary biota under increasing threat of extinction, it is of interest to understand where, why and how biological diversity is generated. If focussed on appropriate taxa, phylogeographic and phylogenetic studies can assist in the identification of both places and processes central to the origin and maintenance of biological diversity. It is explained why southern Africa presents a perfect test-bed for exploring such mechanisms of diversification and why cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) have proved very suitable tools for studies of historical biogeography. This study then exemplifies these points by providing the first large-scale investigation of the historical biogeography of the tribe Platypleurini Schmidt, 1918, with emphasis on the genus Platypleura Amyot & Seville, 1843 in southern Africa. Standard methods of DNA sequencing provided data from portions of the mitochondrial small subunit ribosomal 16S RNA (16S) and cytochrome oxidase subunits I (COI) and II (COII); and the nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha (EF-1α) from 400 ethanol-preserved specimens. These data were analysed using standard phylogenetic methods and a time scale of diversification was estimated using a Bayesian framework and both fossil data and DNA substitution rates. The results showed that the tribe is too recent to be of Gondwanan origin. The lack of monophyly of the genera represented in both Asia and Africa showed that the tribe needs formal taxonomic revision. Diversification of the African platypleurine genera coincides with aridification in the early Oligocene. Dispersal of Asian platypleurine taxa coincides with the meeting of Africa and Eurasia in the mid-Oligocene. Two radiations within African Platypleura are hypothesised; one distributed over most of sub-Saharan Africa and the second restricted to southern Africa, with clades restricted within regional biomes. Within each of the three focal biomes, cryptic taxonomic diversity was confirmed, suggesting that, even in relatively well understood groups such as the southern African platypleurine cicadas, molecular data can identify further diversity. Although each focal taxon was restricted to non-overlapping biomes, comparison of the three biomes highlighted interactions between palaeoclimates and fixed landscape features (coastal topography, river catchments and escarpments) as causative agents of vicariance, dispersal, extinction and diversification of these volant insects. - Description: With our contemporary biota under increasing threat of extinction, it is of interest to understand where, why and how biological diversity is generated. If focussed on appropriate taxa, phylogeographic and phylogenetic studies can assist in the identification of both places and processes central to the origin and maintenance of biological diversity. It is explained why southern Africa presents a perfect test-bed for exploring such mechanisms of diversification and why cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) have proved very suitable tools for studies of historical biogeography. This study then exemplifies these points by providing the first large-scale investigation of the historical biogeography of the tribe Platypleurini Schmidt, 1918, with emphasis on the genus Platypleura Amyot & Seville, 1843 in southern Africa. Standard methods of DNA sequencing provided data from portions of the mitochondrial small subunit ribosomal 16S RNA (16S) and cytochrome oxidase subunits I (COI) and II (COII); and the nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha (EF-1α) from 400 ethanol-preserved specimens. These data were analysed using standard phylogenetic methods and a time scale of diversification was estimated using a Bayesian framework and both fossil data and DNA substitution rates. The results showed that the tribe is too recent to be of Gondwanan origin. The lack of monophyly of the genera represented in both Asia and Africa showed that the tribe needs formal taxonomic revision. Diversification of the African platypleurine genera coincides with aridification in the early Oligocene. Dispersal of Asian platypleurine taxa coincides with the meeting of Africa and Eurasia in the mid-Oligocene. Two radiations within African Platypleura are hypothesised; one distributed over most of sub-Saharan Africa and the second restricted to southern Africa, with clades restricted within regional biomes. Within each of the three focal biomes, cryptic taxonomic diversity was confirmed, suggesting that, even in relatively well understood groups such as the southern African platypleurine cicadas, molecular data can identify further diversity. Although each focal taxon was restricted to non-overlapping biomes, comparison of the three biomes highlighted interactions between palaeoclimates and fixed landscape features (coastal topography, river catchments and escarpments) as causative agents of vicariance, dispersal, extinction and diversification of these volant insects. In South Africa, fires and demands in the past for timber have led to extensive depletion of the Natural Forests. In many cases, natural revegetation has been slow to develop and deterioration of the soil has resulted. The desire to replace the tree cover and at the same time to meet an increasing internal demand for timber, has led to widespread planting of Pine and Bluegum. It is probable that more trees have now been planted than were destroyed in the past. The silviculturist however, who develops a pure stand on land which previously supported the mixed stand, should anticipate a change in soil properties as a natural accompaniment of such an undertaking. The nature of this change is the primum mobile of the present comparative study. The forest soils studied were taken in the Cape Province in the following areas:- Grahamstown; Amatola Mountains, District Alice; Witte-els-Bosch, District Humansdorp, during the course of a year. The physical and chemical properties, and the faunal composition of the soil samples were examined in relation to the different tree covers. Because of the necessity of taking large numbers of samples and thorough examination of these to arrive at a definite conclusion, the work is necessarily incomplete. It is felt however that the results obtained justify a further study of this aspect of soil biology.

Zimbabwe has witnessed gross human rights violations since the attainment of independence in 1980 but most of these violations have been misrepresented, partially captured or ignored particularly by the partisan state media. While issues of human rights have been researched on, there has been a gap in research on the role of social media in safeguarding human rights in Zimbabwe, particularly during election times. There has also been a gap in research about the influences of social media, not just to inspire revolutions but to strengthen democratic practices in Zimbabwe through vibrant discussions of human rights issues on social media platforms. This study was informed by Habermas Theory of public sphere and Social network theory in order to analyse texts shared and discussed on WhatsApp and Facebook about human rights committed ahead of 2018 Harmonised elections. The aim was to establish use of social media as watchdog of human rights. A qualitative content analysis was applied to study texts shared on WhatsApp and Facebook about human rights violations across the country. Three WhatsApp groups and seven Facebook pages were selected for the study from which posts and responses from participants were extracted for analysis. The findings of the study revealed that social media can effectively strengthen democratic practices by exposing government’s unconstitutional practices. Further, social media can be useful in offering ordinary citizens a platform for engagement with civic society as they discuss issues that affect them. The findings of the study also hold the state accountable for the majority of human rights abuses committed throughout the election campaign period. The study then recommended that the government of Zimbabwe should go back to constitutionalism and abide by international human rights treaties to which they are signatory. Further, the study recommended that Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission and other independent commissions be empowered so that human rights are fully enjoyed in Zimbabwe, not just during election campaign periods but all the time

- Description: Rhodeo is the Independent Student Newspaper of Rhodes University. Located in Grahamstown, Rhodeo was established in 1947, and renamed in 1994 as Activate. During apartheid Rhodeo became an active part of the struggle for freedom of expression as part of the now defunct South African Student Press Union. Currently Activate is committed to informing Rhodes University students, staff and community members about relevant issues, mainly on campus. These issues range from hard news to more creative journalism. While Activate acts as a news source, one of its main objectives it to be accessible as a training ground for student journalists. The newspaper is run entirely by the students and is published twice a term. Activate is a free newspaper which receives an annual grant from the Rhodes University Student Representative Council, however, majority of its revenue is generated through advertising.
