- Description: State control over the labour market usually results in the creation of different categories of labour, each having partial and unequal access to that market. In the Third World, typically, justification for control arises from an over-supply of unskilled rural labour and a small demand for such labour in the wage economy. To reduce massive urban unemployment, the state attempts to control the process of rural-urban migration by, inter alia, manipulating the labour market. ^ In South Africa, the civilised labour policy of the Pact government and the highly sophisticated system of black influx control introduced after the Second World War are two examples of such state control. In these cases, racial categories of labour, having differential access to the labour market, were created. The policy of Coloured Labour Preference is another South African example which is of particular interest since it is applied solely to one region of the Republic. Since 1962, when it was administratively coordinated for the first time, this policy has been applied in the Western Cape, a region comprising the 68 magisterial districts situated south-west of Port Elizabeth, Kimberley and the Orange River. In this region, black work-seekers' access to the labour market is severely curtailed. A series of regulations, particular to the Western Cape, are applied with the object of restricting the number of blacks resident in the region; denying blacks permanent rights of sojourn in the region; restricting the scope of employment for blacks in the region; and favouring coloured above black work-seekers throughout the region. - Description: This paper reports the successful synthesis of the low symmetry phthalocyanines: metal-free 2,3-bis[2′-(2′′-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy]-9,10,16,17,23,24-hexa-nn-butoxyphthalocyanine 1H22 and its zinc complex 1Zn along with their nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior in solution and in thin films. 1H NMR investigations evidenced of higher dissymmetry of electronic density in 1H22 in comparison with 1Zn. This dissymmetry is responsible for unusually higher values of Im[χ(3)χ(3)]/αα, βeffβeff, and γγ for 1H22in contrast to 1Zn, where the notable effect of heavy-metal enhancement of ISC was expected. Both compounds showed Im[χ(3)χ(3)]/αα values of the order of 10−11−11 in chloroform which are higher in comparison to the symmetrical octabutoxyphthalocyanine H2[(BuO)8Pc]. NLO properties of 1H22 were improved via its incorporation into polycarbonate polymeric matrix together with CdSe@CdS-TOPO quantum dots. In such composite the value of Im[χ(3)χ(3)]/αα was almost three times higher in comparison with 1H22 solution in chloroform. The obtained composites are expected to be perspective components of optical materials, capable of protection against strong light irradiation

The sketch also shows an open water furrow, leading from the bottom right corner to the top of High Street. This was the public water supply of the town in 1830, which was led to open tanks at various points in the town. Colonel Graham's mimosa tree is shown, in the middle of High Street, a short distance from St. George's Church (later, the Cathedral). This tree, marking the traditional spot where the decision to found Grahamstown was made on 14 August 1812, was destroyed in a gale in 1844. - Description: This study analyses artworks by contemporary Palestinian artists that respond to visual narratives of division in social space from a perspective grounded in a South African context. The state of Israel is built on Historic Palestine. Political Zionism has created an ideological narrative of division that positions people of the Jewish faith as the rightful heirs to the land on which Palestinians have lived for centuries. In order to execute their vision of an exclusively Jewish nation state, the founding pioneers of political Zionism colonised and ethnically cleansed Historic Palestine, establishing Israel in 1948. To sustain the exclusive claim to Palestinian land, Israel has divided the space and the people in it at every possible level. The greatest testament to these efforts is the Israeli apartheid wall and checkpoint security system that can be described as a monumental visual narrative of division. With each second that passes, Israel claims more Palestinian land and expands on existing fences, walls and barriers. It is no secret that the Occupied Palestinian Territories are rapidly transforming into open-air prisons. Israel has stolen the Palestinian horizon line and replaced it with a concrete wall that blocks out light, vision and optimism. Within the shadows of these conflicted, traumatised sites of division, Palestinian artists seek openings, cracks and loopholes that signal the possibility for physical and psychological transgression of these seemingly impenetrable structures of division. I have developed a creative methodology that can be understood through the metaphor of ‘looking with the skin’ as a way to identify and analyse visual narratives of division and artistic responses to sites of division in Palestinian social space. Looking with the skin combines aspects of participant observation (specifically the emphasis on engaged fieldwork) from the discipline of Anthropology with the method of visual analysis from the discipline of Art History. In my application of this method through primary fieldwork conducted within the Occupied Palestinian West Bank Territory from 2013 and 2014, I have learnt that Israel’s colonisation, military occupation and system of apartheid directly impacts the ability of Palestinian artists to make and disseminate their work as well as the choice of content within their artwork. The artworks analysed in this thesis by the artists Khaled Jarrar, Y ael Bartana, Larissa Sansour, Hasan Darahgmeh, Fareh Saleh and Emily Jacir can be positioned in relation to artworks by artists based within a South African context, namely Thando Mama, Serge Alain Nitegeka and Doung Anwar Jahangeer. In this thesis I present a combination of my own photographic documentation of sites of division with the West Bank OPT in relation to the specific artworks made by the artists mentioned above. In my analysis of the photographic documentation and the artists’ work I highlight similarities, parallels, threads and intersecting narratives that connect different artists to one another and to the sites of division they are responding to within their artistic practice. This study carves a small conceptual pathway through ideological and physical walls from South Africa to Palestine through the study of contemporary art and visual culture.

In the dark, complex 1 accounted for less than 50% viable cells at 28.6 μg/mL and 57.1 μg/mL compared to the conjugates which accounted for more than 50% cell viability at these concentrations. The in vitro dark viability and PDT activity of complex 1 was reduced in the presence of these nanoparticles.

- Description: Water is a very essential substance for the existence of organisms and the environment where it functions as a transport medium for valuable chemicals, minerals, nutrients and also as a reaction medium. However, the remarkable water properties are not just limited to the dissolution of biological valuable substances, but also to harmful entities during pollution. This has led to research in the improvement and development of new techniques for water treatment. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver oxide (Ag2O) were prepared using the sol gel process and precipitation method respectively. The TiO2 was doped using a sol gel process with carbon and nitrogen so as to reduce the band gap. TiO2/Ag2O, N-TiO2/Ag2O and C-TiO2/Ag2O composites were also prepared using a precipitation method. The average particle size of prepared TiO2, C-TiO2, N-TiO2, Ag2O, TiO2/Ag2O, N-TiO2/Ag2O and CTiO2/Ag2O was found to be 13nm, 7nm, 10nm, 23nm, 28nm, 24nm and 21nm respectively as measured by TEM analysis. The photo-catalysts, Ag2O and TiO2 and their composites were immobilized on stabilized nanofibres using the electrospinning process to allow subsequent separation and reconciliation of the photo-catalyst after use in water treatment. The photocatalytic and antimicrobial activities of photo-catalysts were also evaluated using water contaminated with phenol red dye and Escherichia coli. The prepared materials were characterized by XRD, TEM, HRSEM, DRS, EDX, FT-IR, and TGA. Carbon was found to be more effective as a dopant than nitrogen. It reduced the band gap by 0.4 while nitrogen doping showed a reduction in band gap of 0.2 compared to undoped titanium dioxide. The doped TiO2 exhibited higher photo-catalytic and antimicrobial activity than the undoped TiO2. Introduction of Ag2O allowed utilization of visible light by the TiO2- Ag2O nano-composite leading to an improved rate of photo-degradation of phenol red and inactivation of E coli. Photo-catalytic properties showed that carbon doped materials have a higher photo-catalytic activity than nitrogen doped materials, while for antimicrobial v properties it is vice-versa. The immobilization of photo-catalysts on support material made it less effective towards the degradation of phenol red. The rate of photo-oxidation of phenol red was three times faster using powder TiO2 compared to immobilized TiO2. However, the remarkable water properties are not just limited to the dissolution of biological valuable substances, but also to harmful entities during pollution. This is what Shekupakela-Nelulu (2008) wrote after a study she conducted on the Learners’ Representative Council (LRC) of a school in Namibia. She refers to a time when “the involvement of students in school affairs was seen by the regime as a political act and attempts by student leaders to involve themselves in educational issues were often quashed” (ibid., p. i). This situation will be all too familiar to South African readers, where a public holiday, Youth Day, was declared to mark the apartheid regime’s brutal treatment of learner protestors on June 16, 1976. While Namibia has not experienced events of such magnitude, the notion of learner voice is equally problematic and worthy of investigation. The absence of leadership development opportunities for learners has led to this research study which seeks to answer the central research question: How can learner leadership be developed in a LRC? I used an interpretive paradigm, adopting a qualitative approach in the study. Concurrently, the study was framed and guided by the second generation of Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as an analytical tool to achieve my research goal. The following questions guided the study in two phases. Phase one: What were the perceived causes for the nonsustainability of the learner leadership (LL) club at the school? Phase two: How is the notion of learner leadership understood in the school? How is leadership developed on the LRC? What enables and constrains leadership development of learners on the LRC? The research participants were thirty LRC members from grades 6 and 7 and15 teachers who teach the LRC members. The principal and three HOD’s were also research participants being part of the Senior Management team. One of the HOD’s also fulfils the role of the guardian teacher to the LRC. A school board chairperson also participated in the Change Laboratory Workshop. Data was generated through multiple data sources such as questionnaires, individual interviews, a focus group interview and observation. The findings from phase one of the study revealed that the learner leadership club’s intervention was a success during the 2014 academic year, but the absence of the learner leadership club as an extra-mural activity affected the sustainability of the club into the next academic year 2015. Findings from phase two revealed that leadership opportunities did exist at the school for learner leadership development. However, a few challenges emerged relating to traditional views of leadership and constraining factors that could affect learner leadership development at the school. Thus, Change Laboratory workshops were held to find solutions to the challenges, in order to promote and enhance learner leadership development, hopefully for the future of the Namibian child.

This is as obvious in the realm of popular and trade union politics as it is in the efforts of the extreme right wing to rebuild a power base. It is too easy to see areas of intense social conflict like the Eastern Cape in television-like images of death and street clashes. It is also too easy to attribute control and authority over events to local organisations. This issue of Work In Progress begins with a careful discussion of events surrounding the March stayaway in Port Elizabeth, tracing the organisational conflicts that are now being so bitterly fought out. In the intense stress of that crucible, divisions between trade union, political and community organisations have been carried to an extreme. Whether resolution of these competing organisational interests is possible remains unclear. But it does seem clear that few organisations are in control of members and supporters in the Eastern Cape - and this may be the result of an over-emphasis on political mobilisation, with a consequent neglect of the structures of political organisation. This over-emphasis on mobilisation has sometimes led to a search for simple answers to complex issues. For example, the rising tide of media and government hysteria about effective foreign disinvestment should not conceal the need for South African organisations to evaluate critically the effects of such campaigns at home. As at least some trade unions have found, a progressive policy on disinvestment is more complicated than it at first seems. As the 'Courts' feature in this WIP indicates, there are more treason trials underway in South Africa at present than at any previous time in history. Precisely why the state has chosen this moment to charge 16 UDF leaders in a trial which, on the face of it, deals with activities that were public and above-ground, is not clear. But from other treason trials before the courts, it seems that the ANC's armed struggle continues despite the Nkomati Accord and other similar agreements with Southern African governments. Of particular interest are state allegations that the ANC is training cadres inside South Africa, and that its military campaign includes township supporters who have not undergone specialised training outside South Africa.

- Description: Competition among firms is a central feature in all free market economies such as South Africa. One of the biggest threats to competition is the presence of cartels in markets. Cartels are firms which collude and compete unfairly in order to obtain monopoly-like profits. For more than fifty years South Africa’s economic landscape has been dominated by a vast network of cartels invital industries, such as bread, cement and fertiliser. South Africa promulgated the Competition Act 89 of 1998 to eradicate cartels and promote and maintain competition within the South African economy. The Competition Act 89 of 1998 prohibits cartel activity and provides for a fine of 10% of turn over for firms found to have engaged in cartel activity. For a variety of reasons, these administrative fines have failed to deter firms from commencing and/or continuing to engage in cartel activity. This is evidenced by the increasing number of firms engaged in large -scale cartels in essential industries, such as construction and food. Public outcry and global trends have persuaded legislators to enactment more stringent penalties in the Competition Amendment Act 1 of 2009. Section 12 of the Competition Amendment Act , which inserts section 73A, creates a cartel of fence in terms of which a director who causes his firm to engage in cartel activity faces ten year imprisonment or a fine of R500, 000. This research shall critically analyse the Competition Amendment Acts effect on deterring cartel activity in South Africa. Despite the legislators’ aim to provide a bigger deterrent for engaging in cartel activity, section 73A of the Competition Amendment Act arouses scrutiny. Firstly, the promulgation of the new cartel offence is contrary to the decimalisation trend in South African company law which recognises the difficulty in enforcing complex regulatory offences with criminal provisions. Secondly, Section 73(5)A appears to infringe an accused director's right to be presumed innocent. Lastly there are co-ordination issues between the National Prosecuting Authority and the Corporate Leniency Policy relating to the granting of prose cutorial immunity for firms which cooperate with the Competition Commission. There search will out line these problems in full. With regards to the problems caused by section 73A, the research will use a comparative analysis with the positionin the United States. Of all the jurisdictions which criminalise cartel activity, the United States was one of the earliest and the most prolific insecuring convictions for directors who cause their firms to engage in cartel activity. The United States has taken innovative steps to supplement their public cartel enforcement drive such as the prosecution of international cartels and the use of private actions. In this regard, the research will extrapolate favourable cartel enforcement measures from the United States for recommendation in order to assist with South Africa’s cartel enforcement and alleviate the problems caused by section 73A, outlined above.

Thurstone formalised the method by providing a mathematical background to it [9-11] and in 1927 the method’s birth took place with his psychometric publications, one being “a law of comparative judgment” [12-14]. The law of comparative judgment is a set of equations relating the proportion of times any stimulus k is judged greater on a given attribute than any other stimulus j to the scales and discriminal dispersions of the two stimuli on the psychological continuum. - Description: Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common pathogenic bacterial infections and is the leading cause of gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer disease and gastric cancers. Studies have revealed the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori is high in many countries around the globe. Although Helicobacter pylori is highly sensitive to antimicrobial agents in vitro the clinical eradication rate of the disease is still low. The instability of API at gastric pH, low concentration of API in the gastric mucosa and short gastric residence times are the main reasons for poor eradication rates. The high prevalence rate of this disease necessitates the design and development of gastric-retentive site specific oral dosage forms for the optimized delivery of existing therapeutic molecules and may be an approach to improving the eradication rate of Helicobacter pylori. Metronidazole (MTZ) is a 5-nitroimidazole derivative that exhibits antibiotic and antiprotozoal activity. MTZ is used in combination with other compounds for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori in peptic ulcer disease. MTZ is a potential candidate for inclusion in a sustained release gastric-retentive delivery system that acts in the stomach and since it is unstable in the intestinal/colonic environment enhancing gastric residence time would be a therapeutic advantage. MTZ is a cost-effective therapy that exhibits good anti-microbial activity and has a favourable pharmacokinetic profile. A sustained release gastric-retentive formulation is therefore proposed as an approach to enhance the local delivery of MTZ and improve treatment outcomes for patients infected with Helicobacter pylori. A stability indicating Reversed-Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP- HPLC) method for the quantitation of MTZ in pharmaceutical dosage forms was developed and optimised using a Central Composite Design (CCD) approach. The RP-HPLC method was found to be linear, accurate, precise, sensitive, selective, and was applied to the analysis of MTZ in commercially available medicines. Preformulation studies were conducted as preparative work prior to manufacture gastric- retentive sustained release MTZ microcapsules. The experiments conducted were tailored for the development of sustained release MTZ microcapsules using a solvent evaporation method. The particle size and shape of the microcapsules was investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). MTZ- excipient compatibility studies were performed using Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The results revealed that no definite interaction between MTZ and intended excipients to be used for manufacture of MTZ formulations occurred. A solvent evaporation procedure was used for the manufacture of MTZ microcapsules. Preliminary formulations were manufactured using two different grades of Methocel® at various levels. In addition the impact of processing parameters on performance was also investigated. The formulations were assessed in terms of in vitro release, buoyancy, yield, encapsulation efficiency and microcapsule size. Formulation optimisation was undertaken using a CCD approach and numerical optimisation was used to predict an optimised formulation composition that would produce minimal initial MTZ release, maximum MTZ release at 12 hours and maximum buoyancy, encapsulation efficiency and yield. The kinetics of MTZ release from microcapsules was established by fitting in vitro release data to different mathematical models. Higuchi model and first-order model appeared to best fit the data as majority of the formulation batches had highest R2 values for these models. Short-term stability assessment of the optimised formulation was established by undertaking stability studies at 25°C/60% RH and 40°C/75%RH. No significant changes in any of the CQA were observed over 30 days of stability testing. A gas chromatographic (GC) method was developed and validated for the quantitation of residual acetone and n-hexane. The optimised formulation contained 213.60 ppm/g acetone and 25.23 ppm/g n-hexane which are well below the limits set for residual solvents. In conclusion, gastric-retentive sustained release MTZ microcapsules with potential for further development and optimisation have been successfully developed and assessed in these studies. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Pharmacy, Pharmacy, 2017

- Description: The aim of this thesis is to promote the dramatological approach, as opposed to a literary critical one, for the analysis of dramatic texts for the purposes of staging. The reason for such a promotion is that the dramatological approach upholds the integrity of the text in interpretation for the performance text by its detailed and semiotic analysis. The focus of such an approach is on the analysis of discourse, that is a micro-proairetic approach (illuminating the extralinguistic action and interaction gained from speech events and deixis), rather than a macro-proairetic approach (that is, plot and story-line) which a literary critical approach would take into consideration. In Chapter one the focus is on the justification for the dramatological approach as well as a review of prominent literary criticism to the playwright’s work (used as an example of dramatic text in this thesis). Rather than the promotion of ordinary literary theory in relation to the need for a performance methodology, explanation for their negation is offered here. Chapter two focuses on the actual methodology of the dramatological approach. In section one of this chapter, we find that basic to dramatological methodology is the linguistic function appropriate to the dramatic: that is the semantic, rhetorical and pragmatic principles of dramatic dialogue. In addition, we find that it is a formal and systematic approach which imposes restrictions on dualisms thereby upholding the integrity of the text. Moreover, that it focuses on the “performative-deictic” character (that is extralinguistic, kinesic and indexical orientations) of the dramatic text - analysis of which is crucial for the purposes of staging. In this way, the analysis of the interpersonal, interactional and contextual areas of dramatic texts is promoted. Thus section one offers an overview of the analytical criteria appropriate to such investigation in order to illuminate dramatic discourse. Section two offers a guide to the application of the methodology, utilizing an extraction of text. Central to the application is the formation of a preliminary analytical ‘grid’ from the range of criteria discussed in section one; that is, how these may be put together. A micro-segmentation of text is utilized to illustrate the application of the methodology. Chapter three offers an application of the methodology to a whole text, that is The Dumb Waiter. The results and benefits for the theatre practitioner of such application are directly illustrated in the deictic (that is section one) and proairetic (that is section two) segmentations of the text since what the text and discourse signify is illustrated in a detailed manner as opposed to paraphrase. Riding into myth: Manifest Destiny, Nietzschean ethics and the creation of a new western frontier mythology in Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian

- Description: Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West is a provocative evocation of the American West that has attracted a wide range of critical responses. This study has three foci: the novel as epic myth, McCarthy’s critique of Manifest destiny, and the influence of Nietzschean philosophy on the judge and McCarthy’s portrayal of the human condition. These concerns conduce to an alternative reading of the conclusion of the novel. Blood Meridian is a unique textual enterprise as it both conforms to and subverts mythic conventions associated with both Classical epic and the American West. Recognition of the resonances between Blood Meridian and these mythologies helps the reader to engage with McCarthy’s ambitious creation of a powerful literary allegory in the tradition of Twain and Faulkner. Having situated McCarthy’s enterprise within these co-ordinates, the study then moves on to examine the novel’s stunning critique of Manifest Destiny, in the context of the implications that such thinking has had on American foreign policy over the past two centuries, and that continue to inspire American involvement in military conflicts well into the twenty-first century. The final area of focus is the influence of Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy on the character of the judge and the weltanschauung that the novel presents. McCarthy’s ultimate objective is to demonstrate that humankind’s most basic condition is an inherently violent one. The more critically accepted reading of the novel is challenged by postulating the kid’s triumph over the judge as not only in keeping with the literary tradition of Melville and others but also a logical outcome of the novel’s allegory of American military involvement in Vietnam. The study concludes that whilst McCarthy has gone on to receive critical acclaim and public praise for works published after Blood Meridian, this work remains both his artistic masterpiece and his most far-reaching engagement with issues of eschatological and political importance. It is argued that, given the contemporary escalation in geo-political tensions, Blood Meridian may well continue to provide insight into the nature of American domestic and foreign policy for decades to come.

Development of a visible light active, photo-catalytic and antimicrobial nanocomposite of titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide for water treatment

- Description: The aim of this study was to prepare composite materials based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silicon dioxide (SiO2), and to evaluate their photo-catalytic and antimicrobial properties. Carbon and nitrogen doped TiO2nano-particles were prepared via a sol gel synthesis, which is a simple hydrolysis and condensation technique. In situ doping was carried out using glucose and urea as carbon and nitrogen sources respectively. Doping increased the spectral response of titanium dioxide photo-catalyst, allowing it to utilise the visible region which is much wider than the UV region (about 40 % of the solar spectrum), thus making it a more efficient photo-catalyst. The carbon and nitrogen doped TiO2-SiO2nano-particles were immobilized on glass support material to allow for easy separation of the spent photo-catalyst after the photo-degradation process. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was employed as both a binder and precursor for silicon dioxide. A mixture of TiO2 and TEOS in a 1:1 ratio was allowed to polymerize on a glass support which had been treated with hydrofluoric acid to introduce OH groups. The prepared photo-catalytic material was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, DRS, TEM, EDX, and BET analyses. Carbon was found to be more effective as a dopant than nitrogen. It brought about a band gap reduction of 0.30 eV and a BET surface area of 95.4 m2g-1 on the photo-catalyst as compared to a gap reduction of 0.2 eV and surface area of 52.2 m2g-1 for nitrogen doped TiO2. On the other hand, introduction of SiO2 allowed utilization of visible light by the TiO2-SiO2 nano-composite leading to an improved rate of photo-degradation of both methyl orange and phenol red. However, the immobilization of TiO2 on support material made it less effective towards inactivation of E. coli ATCC 25922 bacterial cells when compared to powdered TiO2 which was able to inactivate about 98 % of the bacterial cells within an hour of treatment.

On the other hand, introduction of SiO2 allowed utilization of visible light by the TiO2-SiO2 nano-composite leading to an improved rate of photo-degradation of both methyl orange and phenol red. However, the immobilization of TiO2 on support material made it less effective towards inactivation of E. coli ATCC 25922 bacterial cells when compared to powdered TiO2 which was able to inactivate about 98 % of the bacterial cells within an hour of treatment.
