Unstable ironies: narrative instability in Herman Charles Bosman's "Oom Schalk Lourens" series
- Authors: Davis, Rebecca
- Date: 2006
- Subjects: Bosman, Herman Charles, 1905-1951 -- Criticism and interpretation , Irony in literature , Narration (Rhetoric)
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , MA
- Identifier: vital:2215 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002258 , Bosman, Herman Charles, 1905-1951 -- Criticism and interpretation , Irony in literature , Narration (Rhetoric)
- Description: This thesis examines the narrative situation within Herman Charles Bosman’s “Oom Schalk Lourens” series of stories, focussing on the nature of the relationship between author and narrator. In particular, it seeks to trace the source of the multiple ironies at work in the texts. It has been customary for critics in the past to claim that the irony within the stories stems from Bosman, operating authorially ‘above’ Oom Schalk. In terms of this theory, Oom Schalk is read as being largely unaware of the inconsistencies and contradictions within his narrative. It is the claim of this thesis, however, that Oom Schalk is the self-aware creator of the texts’ ironies much of the time. Chapter 1 commences with an attempt at defining irony, and provides a brief overview of the history of its deployment within South African literature before discussing the literary genre which Bosman was to exploit as his ironic vehicle: the “oral-style” short story. Chapter 2 examines Wayne C. Booth’s notions of “stable” and “unstable” irony: the irony of the Oom Schalk stories has, in the past, been classified as belonging to the former category, but this thesis attempts to show that its inconsistent deployment within the stories consigns it more accurately to the latter. Chapter 3 offers an assessment of the extrinsic contexts relevant to the analysis: the context of the stories’ publication, and the likely composition of Bosman’s reading public. Chapter 4 begins to examine the distance between implied author and implied narrator in the stories. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 subject stories dealing with the themes of art, race and land to detailed analysis in order to examine the shifting – and progressively, though unevenly, diminishing – distance between Bosman and Oom Schalk. The thesis concludes that the degree to which the ironic distance between author and narrator fluctuates within, and between, the stories, results in a narrative situation which must be classified as fundamentally unstable.

The finance linked individual subsidy programme: A housing policy assessment

- Description: Since 1994, the democratic government has put various legislative measures in place to address the spatial legacies of apartheid and manifest the right to access adequate housing, which was denied to many South Africans. Twenty-seven years post-democracy, South Africa is still faced with glaring spatial inequalities, with many South Africans condemned to squalid and inadequate residential conditions. The need for housing continued outweigh what government can supply, thus making the right to access adequate housing an impossible dream for many. Some of the factors that have contributed to increased housing demand are urbanisation, migration and population growth. While democracy has introduced economic opportunities that have improved the lives of many South Africans who were once side-lined and discriminated against, South Africa remains racially polarised, with a widening gap between rich and poor. An increasing majority of South Africa falls in a low-middle income category, which is sometimes considered the middle class. In the context of housing, the middle class is characterised by people who are too rich to qualify for free government subsidised housing yet too poor to access housing finance from mainstream mortgage lenders , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Business and Economic science, 2022

- Description: Er3+-Yb3+ co-doped Ba5(PO4)3OH nanoparticle powder phosphors were successfully synthesized by urea combustion method. The resulting powder phosphors were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). XRD data confirmed crystallization of pure hexagonal phase of Ba5(PO4)3OH and HRSEM images showed formation of ellipsoidal particles. XPS data combined with EDS analysis confirmed the materials composition that corresponds with identification of all the chemical elements constituting the materials. The in vitro dark cytotoxicity of the particles confirmed lack of cytocidal behaviour in the absence of light, but considerable photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity was observed upon illumination. Upon excitation using a 980 nm laser, multiple emission peaks in the green and red regions corresponding to the optical transitions of Er3+ ion were observed. Upon co-doping with Yb3+, upconverted red emission was detected and this was attributable to non-radiative energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+. The proposed mechanism of upconversion photoluminescence is discussed.

The autecology of Azolla filiculoides Lamarck with special reference to its occurrence in the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam catchment area
- Authors: Ashton, Peter John

- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Doctoral , PhD
- Identifier: vital:4181 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003732
- Description: An autecological study of the heterosporous fern Azolla filiculoides Lamarck and its endosymbiotic blue-green alga Anabaena azollae Strasburger, based on a combination of field and laboratory studies, is presented. The taxonomy, morphology and anatomy of the fern-alga association were studied as well as nutritional and physiological aspects of the symbiosis. These studies have defined the habitat and nutritional requirements of the fern and have provided new insights into its reproductive biology, nitrogen metabolism and the nature of the association between the fern and alga. In the catchment area of the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam the availability of suitably sheltered habitat limits the distribution of A. filiculoides while the availability of nutrients, in particular calcium, phosphorus and iron, limits the growth of the fern. The multilayered mats formed by A. filiculoides are essential for spore production, cause dramatic changes in the hydrochemistry of the underlying waters and confer a great competitive advantage on the plant. Methods for the isolation of the fern and algal components of the symbiosis have been developed but recombination of the individual organisms to reform the symbiosis was unsuccessful. The development of the fern is closely linked to that of the alga and the association is maintained throughout the life cycle of the fern. Because of its specific habitat and nutritional requirements, A. filiculoides is unlikely to colonize the open waters of the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam.

Apartheid legacies and identity politics in Kopano Matlwa's Coconut, Zoë Wicomb's Playing in the light and Jacques Pauw's Little ice cream boy

- Description: An analysis of the preoccupation writers of South African fiction display after the process started by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is vital in post-apartheid South African writing. It becomes clear that a fascination with the past is not bound to any one specific racial or gender group within post-apartheid South Africa. Authors can therefore be said to continue the excavation work that the TRC started many years ago. The severe impact that the rigid classification of human beings into different groups based on race had, and continues to have, becomes evident in contemporary South African writing. The fact that white privilege always comes at a cost for those wanting to attain or maintain it cannot be overlooked and whiteness as a construct is examined.

NMMU alumni as non-donors : why NMMU alumni do not become donors to the institution

- Language: English

- Description: This project investigates why alumni do not become donors to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Interviews with non-donors created the opportunity for an in depth qualitative examination of the motivating process that led these non-donors to abstain from giving. This study used the Van Slyke and Brooks (Van Slyke & Brooks, 2005) model of alumni giving and the Schervish (Schervish, The spiritual horizon of philianthropy: New directors for money and motives, 2000) supply side theory of philanthropy, which has been successfully applied in similar studies (Wastyn, 2008), to provide the conceptual framework. This framework maintains that donors and non-donors differ in that the manner in which they socially construct their university experience in creating their own realities. This constructed reality becomes the filter through which non-donors pass requests for financial support (whether direct or indirect) from the institution. The study revealed that at NMMU factors including generic donor behaviour among alumni, the status of current non-donors as being mostly past donors to their respective constituent institution, attitudes toward the institutional reputation (or aspects thereof) of the NMMU, identified obstacles to engagement, pervasive negative attitudes to institutional giving and alumni support for commercialised but not tiered giving activities, can play a major role in restructuring the manner in which non-donor alumni should be approached. The study demonstrates the need to include non-donors in research that explores alumni giving to the university. It confirms the distinct impact of the abnormally distributed demographic characteristics of this university and confirms that examining the impact of these characteristics and experiences cannot be effectively done by simply relying on one or two simple variables. Being a management project, 13 (thirteen) distinct categories of management recommendations are made, ranging from strategy development, through accounting and budgeting practice, to proposing specific revenue generating initiatives. The study concludes with the view that Alumni can and should be able to make a notable contribution to the revenue of the university and in so doing, contribute to the sustainability of the pro-social transformation process of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

The life history of a minnow, Barbus Anoplus, in a man-made lake in South Africa

- Description: Aspects of the life history strategy of Barbus anoplus Weber were studied in a turbid man-made lake (P.K. Ie Roux impoundment, Orange River system, South Africa). The minnow has successfully colonized the shoreline of the P.K. Ie Roux impoundment, where the preferred habitats of the chubbyhead barb are flooded stream beds, erosion gullies and flooded ruderal communities. B. anoplus reaches sexual maturity in one year, at a length of about 40mm FL. They have a multiple spawning habit, with the first spawn in November or December and the second spawn in February or March. A part of the adult population undertakes a spawning migration up inflowing tributaries, while the other part breeds along the shoreline. The eggs and young develop rapidly and a proportion of the protolarvae float near the water surface, where they are probably dispersed by water currents. Most of the males die off after their second summer, whereas many females live into a third summer. Females also attain a larger maximum size (73mm FL) than males (60mm FL). The importance of increasing the reproductive potential of B. anoplus by multiple spawning is discussed. Feeding studies indicate that B. anoplus are opportunistic predators on invertebrates. The feeding habits of minnows collected from four different habitats varied. Minnows collected in the open water fed mainly on zooplankton, while shoreline populations fed on chironomid larvae and zooplankton. The most varied diet was found in fish living in a well-vegetated tributary of the impoundment which was not subject to inundation. B. anoplus is basically an r-strategist (i.e. it is small in size, shortlived, males have bright colouration, high seasonal reproductive potential). These characteristics enable the species to colonize and successfully inhabit unstable environments and probably accounts for the fact that it is the most widespread species south of the Limpopo River system. It is recommended that B. anoplus be considered as a candidate in southern Africa for further studies on life history strategies.

- Description: The small to medium tourism enterprises (SMTEs) are recognised as significant contributors to the development of the local and regional economies and create much needed entrepreneurial ventures. Universally, SMTEs play a significant role in the tourism sector. Management of these enterprises by owners and managers seems to face challenges. This paper examines the factors impacting on management capacity with specific focus on the SMTEs in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. A systematic random sampling technique was utilised to choose a sample of 320 business respondents from the 2012 database of the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, comprising of formally registered small tourism businesses. A total of 310 usable questionnaires was finally obtained. In this study descriptive and inferential statistics were applied. Descriptive statistics were captured to highlight the owners’ characteristics and to consolidate their measurement scores. Utilising inferential statistics, the study undertook an investigation into relationships between demographic variables, business characteristics and factors impacting on management capacity within SMTEs were undertaken. The paper elucidates that a significant relationship was found between business characteristics and demographic variables. Furthermore, skills development, strategic and management knowledge and business leadership factors were compared with the qualifications group. This study adds to the body of knowledge in a predominantly less researched phenomenon of management capacity within SMTEs.
