- Description: Alloyed quantum dots (QDs) passivated with shell materials have valuable optical characteristics suitable for a wide array of applications. In this work, alloyed ternary CdSeS QDs passivated with ZnSeTe and ZnSeTe/ZnS shells have been synthesized via a hot-injection method and a ligand exchange reaction employing L-cysteine as a thiol ligand has been used to obtain these water-soluble nanocrystals for the first time. The photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of alloyed L-cysteine-capped CdSeS was 71.2% but decreased significantly to 5.2% upon passivation with a ZnSeTe shell. The red shift in PL emission of the CdSeS/ZnSeTe QDs was attributed to be strain-induced whilst a lattice-induced process likely created defect states in the core/shell interface hence contributing to the decline in the PL QY. Nonetheless, the fluorescence stability of CdSeS/ZnSeTe QDs in aqueous solution was unperturbed. Further passivation with a ZnS shell (CdSeS/ZnSeTe/ZnS) improved the PL QY to a value of 58.7% and thus indicates that the defect state in the QDs core/shell/shell structure was reduced. PL lifetime exciton measurements indicated that the rates of decay of the QDs influenced their photophysical properties.

- Description: Synthesis of fluorescent alloyed quantum dots (QDs) with unique optical properties suitable for a wide array of chemical, physical and biological applications is of research interest. In this work, highly luminescent and photostable alloyed quaternary CdSeTeS core QDs of two different sizes were fabricated via the organometallic hot-injection synthetic route. Characterization of the nanocrystals were performed using TEM, XRD, UV/vis and fluorescence spectrophotometric techniques. We have demonstrated in this work that the well fabricated alloyed quaternary CdSeTeS core QDs possess unique optical properties that are advantageous over conventional core/shell systems. Formation of the CdSeTeS/ZnS core/shell with the desired optical properties comes with a number of challenges, hence the advantages of the quaternary alloyed core over the core/shell QDs are (i) avoidance of the challenging process of determining the proper shell thickness which can provide the desired optical properties in the core/shell system and (ii) avoidance of the lattice-induced mismatch between the core and the shell material which can either lead to incomplete exciton confinement or dislocation at the core/shell interface.

- Description: Colon cancer (CC) ranks high in morbidity and mortality amongst the most frequent occurring cancers worldwide. Mortality rates are mostly caused by mis-diagnosis and the poor efficacy of treatment. The aim of this study was to enhance our insights of quantum dots, for early detection and targeted drug delivery, thereby reducing toxicity to normal cells and reducing side effects that are caused by previous colon cancer medicine. The synthesis, characterization and cytotoxicity studies of CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots (QDs), nanocrystals are reported. Toxicological properties of the Cd2+ core are reduced by capping quantum dots with ZnSe, varying chain length and functional group ligands. Fluorescence wavelength and their size is improved by varying Cd2+ source and varying nanocrystal synthesis growth temperature. CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots are characterized with FT-IR to elucidate their structure. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-Ray Diffraction (EDX), Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) are used to measure their size and composition. Ligand exchange reactions are conducted with the use of 3-Mercaptopropanoic acid (3-MPA) to facilitate bio-compatibility and stability of CdSe/ZnSe QDs. Temperature stability of various ligand capped and stabilized CdSe/ZnSe QDs are measured by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Caco-2 cell line is cultured from colon cancer, and cytotoxic studies are conducted to test for cell viability of various capped 3-Mercaptopropanoic acid (3-MPA) CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots at various concentrations. Myristic acid capped CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots produce high fluorescing mono-disperse quantum dots. The capping material, synthesis temperature and Cd2+ source of CdSe/ZnSe QDs affect fluorescence wavelength and thermal stability of quantum dots. Fluorescence wavelength is improved by using CdCl2.7H2O source of Cd2+. Cytotoxicity was found to be dependent on the concentration and the capping material of quantum dots. CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots toxicity is adjusted and reduced by varying the length, size and type of the capping ligand on the surface of quantum dots.

- Description: L-Glutathione (GSH) capped core CdSe (2.3 nm) and core shell CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) (3.0 nm and 3.5 nm) were coordinated to gallium octacarboxy phthalocyanine (ClGaPc(COOH)8) to form ClGaPc(COOH)8–QDs conjugates. An efficient transfer of energy from the QDs to the Pcs was demonstrated through Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), the FRET efficiencies in all cases was above 50%. The photophysical parameters (triplet state and fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes) were also determined for the conjugates. There was a decrease in the fluorescence lifetimes of ClGaPc(COOH)8 in the presence of all the QDs, due to the heavy atom effect. The triplet quantum yields increased in the conjugates. The lifetimes also became longer for the conjugates compared to Pc alone.

- Description: Novel pentadecylphenoxyl substituted homoleptic sandwich–type metallophthalocyanines: bis (complexes 2 and 4 containing Eu and Dy, respectively) and tris (complexes 3 and 5 containing Eu and Dy, respectively) 2,9,16,23–tetrakis–(3–pentadecylphenoxyl) phthalocyanines and cadmium based (Ag–CdSeTe/ZnTeSe) nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized. The nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior of the metallophthalocyanines and their composites with NCs were investigated using the open aperture Z–scan technique at excitation wavelength of 532 nm with 10 ns pulse. All of the samples exhibited interesting NLO attributes: among all the sandwich–type complexes, complex 5 afforded the most efficient NLO features accounting for large nonlinear absorption coefficient (βeff) value of 3500 cm/GW and limiting threshold (Ilim) value of 0.43 J cm−2. Overall, the composites of the triple decker sandwich–type complexes with Ag–CdSeTe/ZnTeSe yielded the best NLO characteristics with 3 and 5 accounting for the largest βeff value of 5500 cm/GW and Ilim value of 0.09 J cm−2. The synthesized complexes and their composites with NCs could be viable and efficient NLO absorber due to their interesting NLO activities.

A problematisation of Afrikaner identity subject positions as found in the coverage of contemporary Afrikaans music in HUISGENOOT magazine discourse

- Description: Through the lens of Foucauldian genealogy, this thesis problematises the subject positions towards Afrikaner identity reflected in contemporary Afrikaans songs covered by Huisgenoot magazine. Such a genealogical exploration thematises the games of truth underpinning the formation of Huisgenoot, highlights its role in solidifying white Afrikaner Nationalist discourse of apartheid, observes its more populist, profit-oriented approach from the 1970s onwards and considers the residual echoing of its former discursive orientation. The song analysis of selected Afrikaans songs/music videos covered in Huisgenoot is guided by the semiotics of Nicholas Cook, such that it frames the analytical question of how such music is driven by conformance, contest and complementation between multi-media elements in ways that make meaning possible. Accordingly, this methodology resonates with the non-essentialising focus of Foucauldian problematisation, premised on critical resistance that makes new responses simultaneously possible. The self-reflexive autoethnographical approach employed, entailing the author’s dialogical engagement with her own ‘Afrikaner self’, similarly facilitates the dynamic interplay between multiplicities. Correlatively, on the one hand, more ‘closed’ and more ‘open’ Afrikaner identity positions reflected within the songs are analysed, as well as seemingly ‘reconciliatory’ / collaborative’ musical manifestations which ultimately revert back to more ‘closed’ identity constructs. But on the other hand, observation of adherence to a ‘white-black’ dichotomy within songs that manifest more ‘closed’ identity positions also leads to consideration of the parallels between the goals of white Afrikaner Nationalism and the current Decolonisation narrative, which is informed by Black Consciousness thought and generated by the ‘Colonisation of a Special Kind’ ANC policy. Both such Decolonisation rhetoric and the countering rhetoric of the Neo-Afrikaner Protest Movement (NAP) are thus identified as metanarratives, underpinned by a ‘white-black’ dichotomy. In this regard, while Huisgenoot’s predisposition towards songs manifesting more ‘closed’ Afrikaner identity positions is considered in terms of its aforementioned profit-oriented endeavour to appeal to its ostensible primary readership, an encouraging increase in coverage of coloured artists is both noted and occasionally seen to overlap with its coverage of songs manifesting more ‘open’ Afrikaner identity positions. Among the latter one may – again in Foucauldian terms – differentiate between songs focussed on an engagement in cross-cultural relations of power, and songs intent on shattering states of domination of power blocks, often through shocking juxtaposition of disparate elements. These more violently dismantling endeavours, it is argued, comprise examples of Foucauldian transversal struggles, although their coverage in Huisgenoot is also attributed to their shock value and/or record sales, rather than their transformational potential. Furthermore, such Huisgenoot coverage is also seen to place more transformationally oriented artists at risk of media ‘domestication’, with its concomitant inhibiting of creativity. Finally, the researcher’s commitment to creative problematisation of her own Afrikaner identity, coupled with acknowledgement of her inescapable textual entrapment, culminates in her acceptance of the continual flux characterising dialogical power relations, before she – in accordance with the Foucauldian methodology employed – presents all ‘conclusions’ in a non-dictatorial spirit of ‘truth creation’, desirous of continual self/other dialogue. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Humanities, 2021

- Description: Photophysical properties of quantum dots (QDs) such as their photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY), exciton lifetime and PL stability are important parameters used to unravel their chemical and physical characteristics. In this work, we have comparatively investigated the photophysical properties of a series of L-cysteine-capped non-alloyed (CdTe and CdSe) and alloyed (CdZnTe, CdSeS, CdSeTe and CdSeTeS) core QDs. Each of the QDs varied in their size and PL emission wavelength. We observe no physical relationship between the PL QY of the QDs and their PL stability. Based on the PL stability assessment, CdTe QDs with a high PL QY value of 88% exhibited poor PL stability while moderate PL stability was observed for CdZnTe (QY = 78%); CdSe (QY = 3%); and CdSeTe QDs (QY = ∼3%). Alloyed CdSeS (QY = ∼69%) and CdSeTeS (QY = 23%) QDs exhibited good PL stability and can serve as potential fluorophores for a wide range of chemical and biological applications. Generally, it is proposed that the structural nature of the QDs played a significant role in their overall photophysical properties. The information provided in this work will assist in the selection of core QDs suitable for different applications.

- Description: CdTe QDs has been demonstrated in many studies to possess good outstanding optical and photo-physical properties. However, it has been established from literature that the toxic Cd2+ that tends to leak out into nearby solutions can be protected by less toxic ZnS or ZnSe shells leading to the synthesis of core-shells and multi-core-shells. Hence, this has allowed the synthesis of CdTe multi-core-shells to have gained much interest. The preparation of most CdTe multi-core-shells reported from various studies usually has a longer reaction time (6–24 h) in reaching their highest emission maxima. The synthesis of CdTe multi-core-shells in this study only took 35 min to obtain a highest emission maximum compared to what has been reported from the literature. CdTe multi-core-shells were synthesized by injecting 7, 14, and 21 mL each of Zn complex solution and Se ions into the reacting mixture containing CdTe core-shells (3 h) at 5 min intervals over a 35 min reaction time. The emission maxima of the MPA-TGA-CdTe multi-core-shells at 21 mL injection was recorded around 625 nm. Therefore, we are reporting the rapid synthesis of five different thiol co-capped CdTe/CdSe/ZnSe multi-core-shell QDs with the highest emission maxima obtained at 35 min reaction time.

- Description: ABSTRACT We report the synthesis of aqueous and organically soluble cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanoparticles (NPs) doped with gold via a facile and effective method. Briefly the synthesis involves the reduction of selenium powder using sodium sulphite to produce sodium selenosulphate which acts as the selenium source, followed by the addition of CdX (X = Cl2, CH3COO, NO3). The nanoparticles were passivated with trisodium citrate, mercaptopropanoic acid (MPA), potassium sodium tartarate (PST) and L-cysteine which rendered them soluble in water and also acted as stabilizing agents, while passivation with hexadecylamine (HDA) made them soluble in organic solvent which also enhanced their stability. The high quality of the as-synthesized nanoparticles was confirmed using absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM). The systematic study of the effect of mole ratio, temperature, capping agent, growth time, cadmium precursor and ratio of Au on the size, optical and structural properties on the water soluble CdSe nanoparticles were investigated. All the as-synthesised particles, are blue-shifted in relation to the bulk band gap of CdSe. As the Cd: Se mole ratio increases, the intensity of the citrate capped CdSe materials also increases and the particle sizes are in the range of 2.06 – 4.00 nm. When the temperature was increased, the luminescence intensity quenched whereas the particle size increased. As the growth time increased, the intensity increased and then decreased again towards the end of the reaction. When different capping agents were used the particle sizes range from 2.06 – 3.36 nm for citrate, 2.08 – 3.33 nm for MPA, 2.01 – 2.28 nm for L-cysteine and polydispersed for PST. The luminescence intensity decreased in the order citrate > cysteine > PST > MPA when CdCl2 was used as cadmium precursor. When different cadmium precursors were used for L-cysteine, the particle sizes range from 2.06 – 2.31 nm for Cd(CH3COO)2 and 2.00 – 2.37 nm for Cd(NO3)2 while the intensity increased as the reaction time increased, however, still lower than the CdCl2 materials. The effect of Au ratio showed that the intensity of Au-doped cysteine capped-CdSe increased as the Au ratio decreased. The systematic study of the effect of temperature and growth time in the organic soluble CdSe nanoparticles on the size, optical and structural properties was also investigated. All the as-synthesised particles were blue-shifted in relation to the bulk CdSe. As the temperature increased the particle sizes of the undoped materials range between 2.92 – 2.95 nm at 160 °C and 5.35 – 5.39 nm at 200 °C while for the doped materials the particle size range from 2.53 – 2.61 nm at 160 °C, 3.97 nm at 200 °C and 4.20 – 4.72 nm at 240 °C. The intensity of the doped materials increased as the reaction time increased and then decreased again towards the end of the reaction. After ligand exchange the intensity of the as-synthesized doped and undoped-CdSe NPs was very low compare to the parent organically capped doped and un-doped CdSe. It was discovered that without any further purification, the quality of the materials formed by this method is comparable to that of the best CdSe NPs reported in the literature. This method is safe, inexpensive and reproducible. , Thesis (MsC Chemistry) -- Faculty of Natural Sciences, 2019

- Description: Mortality has always been a popular theme in literature. By means of a semiological and narratological approach, it has been endeavoured in this study to prove that transience comprises a complex code constituted by a whole series of codes. In each of the chosen volumes one specific short story is analysed and all the codes related to transience are defined and described. Then these codes are discussed within the context of the volume as a whole. The following codes have been identified and analysed: death and death related codes, decay, distress, frustration, emptiness, loneliness observe, look and see, reproduction, the code of ageing, youth/ageing, lost love, time. The following texts of Aucamp have been used as the object of study: Die Hartseerwals, Spitsuur and 'n Bruidsbed vir Tant Nonnie. The reason these texts were selected, is twofold: They represent the early works of the author. The continuity is essential for making meaningful deductions. The final conclusions are: Man's bond with an environment which is characterised by continual change, influences his existence and makes his life a tentative experience. Transience involves more than merely ageing, obsolescence and death. Transience is a complex experience, related to the physical and mental in man. Besides ageing, sexuality contributes to man's downfall. Loneliness, isolation and frustration determine his actions and stress his experience of transience. The result is a painful experience of life.

- Description: Indium phthalocyanine–CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) nanocomposites (InPc–CdSe/ZnS) of three sizes (5.57, 8.12 and 8.75 nm) were synthesized according to known procedures. The particle size of the CdSe/ZnS QDs alone are 3.95, 6.02, and 6.66 nm, and are denoted as QD1, QD2 and QD3 respectively. The nonlinear absorption (NLA) properties of the nanoconjugates (InPc–CdSe/ZnS) were investigated with nanosecond laser radiation at 532 nm wavelength. Enhanced NLA properties compared to the InPc alone were observed in the conjugates. The NLA was found to increase with the size of the CdSe/ZnS particles attached to the phthalocyanine. The observed increase was due to the availability of more free-carrier ions in the larger QDs, thus giving rise to the enhanced free-carrier absorption. The measured free-carrier absorption cross-sections (σFCA) are 1.10, 1.65 and 1.95 (×10−19 cm2) for InPc-QD1, InPc-QD2 and InPc-QD3 respectively. The nanoconjugates (InPc–CdSe/ZnS) showed a much lower threshold for optical limiting together with a much lower transmission at high fluences, than the previously reported nanocomposite limiters.

- Description: This thesis investigates the narrative strategies of Jeanne Goosen, as employed in her short novel, Louoond. I regard this text as an excellent example of modern Afrikaans prose, and particular reference was made to her previous novel: Om 'n mens na te boots which indicates similarities to the text under scrutiny. Chapter One is a close reading of the first chapter of the novel, in order to identify certain prominent codes, and also to determine what the text itself prescribes. My presumption is that the text determines how it should be read, that no single, predetermined strategy can be rigidly applied to it. Thus I formulated my own individual possible reading from the first chapter, and I view it throughout as mere "speculation", since this possible reading remains only a possibility. Chapter Two contains the theoretical background that is necessary for a scientific study of this kind. I followed mainly the strategies of Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida, who are pioneers in the post -modernistic theory. It was particularly important to investigate the role of the narrator: the narrator in Louoond presents herself as a writer, therefore it is the process that is paramount. In Chapter Three the code of writing, as identified in Chapter ʺOneʺ of Louoond, is followed closely throughout the text. In Louoond, which is metatextual, violence is textually inherent, and also part of the process of writing. This violence is definitely also part of the South African situation as it is signified in the novel. Throughout the narrator is in a state of tension about her own role in the ʺrevolutionʺ - in which also her own text is a revolution in language, but always within the NOW of South Africa. Chapter Four concerns itself mainly with the role of the woman as narrator, as muse, as primary protagonist. I discuss the code of woman in relation to prominent feminist writers, but it remains in context of the text. Each issue is in the first place determined by the text, the text therefore determines which feminist issues will be investigated. The South African situation, and specifically the Afrikaner situation, serves throughout as intertext for Louoond, as with the code of writing. Other intertextual references are important, because the text is never independent from anything outside itself, and could not exist in such independence. Music plays an important role, with Callas as muse and as fellow female artist, while George Sand functions as fellow writer. Woman, independent of man, is put forward as creator. In my reading, the text remains in the first place a fabrication/imitation of the South African reality, and the fInal scene reaffirms the ʺfinal catastropheʺ that is indicated in the motto as a ʺcondition of controlled hysteriaʺ

- Description: This study is concerned with modern Christian poetry in Afrikaans. Afrikaans poetry, which initially carried the clear stamp of the Afrikaner's Calvinistic view of life, gradually assumed a new image to the extent that it could no longer be recognised as religious and specifically Calvinistic poetry. To the contrary, modern Afrikaans Christian poetry is the expression of a contemporary conceptualisation of the very same gospel. The occasional violent reaction especially of conservative institutions to so called "unchristian" modern poetry in Afrikaans during the past three decades, has prompted this study which attempts to illustrate that modern Afrikaans poetry still exhibits a strong Christian element. The essential qualities of contemporary Christian poetry in Afrikaans are illustrated in the discussion of the works of particular leading Afrikaans poets. Chapter 3 attempts to indicate a transitional stage between traditional and modern Christian poetry by means of an overview of the latest tendencies and approaches, with brief references to the recent poetry of the Louws, the poetry of Peter Blum as the initial exponent of the poetry of the Sixties, and the poetry of Ina Rousseau. The work of Sheila Cussons, eminent Roman Catholic (and thus also Christian) poet who is probably the most impressive contemporary exponent of metaphysical/mystic poetry in Afrikaans, is discussed in chapter 4. Chapter 5 illustrates the traditional Calvinistic Christian point of view and Christian experience as represented in the poetry of I.L. de Villiers. The poetification of the ministry adds new dimension to religions poetry in Afrikaans. Chapter 6 constitutes a discussion of the works of T.T . Cloete, the most significant contemporary Reformed poet in Afrikaans indicating the extent to which the many related facets embodied in his poetry consistently reflect a Christian attitude and are unified in and encompassed by the principle of Soli Deo Gloria. Chapter 7, by way of conclusion, reviews the religious poetry of Lina Spies and Petra Müller who write accessible popular poetry, nevertheless exploring interesting references. In conjunction with the poetry of Ina Rosseau, this poetry represents a contribution to modern Afrikaans religious poetry from a feminine point of view
