- Description: The synthesis and electrochemical characterisation of octapentylthiophthalocyaninato manganese (III) acetate (4) and octapentylthiophthalocyaninato titanium (IV) oxide (5) complexes are reported. The complexes have an unusual purple (4) and red (5) colouration since the Q-band is shifted to the near infrared region with Q-band maxima at 893 nm and 808 nm in dichloromethane for 4 and 5, respectively. The structures of the complexes were confirmed by elemental analysis and interpretation of their spectroscopic data, including 2D NMR. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) of the Mn complex (4) showed four quasi reversible couples. The reduction processes are attributed to MnIIIPc−2/MnIIPc−2 and MnIIPc−2/MnIIPc−3 and the oxidation processes to MnIVPc−2/MnIIIPc−2 and MnIVPc−1/MnIVPc−2. The processes were confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry. A well-defined spectrum of the rare MnIVPc−2 species is reported. The CV of the Ti complex (5) showed two well-resolved reduction processes due to TiIVPc−2/TiIIIPc−2 and TiIIIPc−2/TiIIPc−2. However, oxidation processes of the complex revealed adsorption behaviour and resulted in decomposition on electrolysis using spectroelectrochemistry.

- Description: The synthesis, spectroscopic and electrochemical characterisation of the following oxotitanium tetra-substituted phthalocyanines are reported: 1,(4)-(tetraphenoxyphthalocyaninato)titanium(IV) oxide (5a); 1,(4)-(tetra-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyaninato)titanium(IV) oxide (5b); 2,(3)-(tetraphenoxyphthalocyaninato)titanium(IV) oxide (6a) and 2,(3)-(tetra-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyaninato)titanium(IV) oxide (6b). Complexes 5a and 5b are substituted at the non-peripheral (α) positions, whereas complexes 6a and 6b are substituted at the peripheral (β) positions. Cyclic voltammograms of all four complexes are similar, with three reversible reduction couples and three quasi-reversible to irreversible oxidations. The first two reductions are two-electron processes, confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry to be due to TiIVPc−2/TiIIPc−3 and TiIIPc−2/TiIPc−3 redox processes. Spectroelectrochemistry showed that upon oxidation, the molecule decomposes. Oxidation is expected to occur at the ring. Chronocoulometry confirmed two electron transfer at the first and second reduction steps; and a one electron transfer at the third reduction.

- Description: This paper investigates the catalytic activities of arylthio substituted oxotitanium phthalocyanine (OTiPc) complexes that are immobilized on the glassy carbon electrode by electropolymerization, towards the oxidation of nitrite. The complexes are peripherally and non-peripherally substituted with phenylthio and benzylthio groups, namely 1a, 1b, 2a and 2b. All the modified electrodes exhibited improved electrocatalytic oxidation of nitrite than the unmodified electrodes by a two-electron mechanism producing nitrate ions. Catalytic currents are enhanced and nitrite overpotential reduced to ∼0.60 V. Kinetic parameters are determined for all complexes and a mechanism is proposed.

- Description: The effects of formation of cyclodextrin inclusion complexes on the photochemical and photophysical properties of zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and various peripherally substituted zinc phthalocyanines as well as zinc naphthalocyanine (ZnNPc) are investigated. The cyclodextrins employed were the hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin and unsubstituted β-cyclodextrin. Job's plots were employed to confirm the stoichiometry of the inclusion complexes and showed 2:1 and 4:1 (cyclodextrin:phthalocyanine) inclusion behavior. The phthalocyanine inclusion complexes showed larger singlet oxygen quantum yield (ϕΔ) values when compared to the free phthalocyanines before inclusion, for complexes 1 (zinc naphthalocyanine), 2 (zinc tetranitrophthalocyanine) and 4 (zinc tetra-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyanine). The fluorescence quantum yields generally remained unchanged following inclusion.

Form and substance in R.M. Hare's utilitarianism

- Type: Thesis , Masters , MA
- Identifier: vital:2706 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002836 , Hare, R. M. (Richard Mervyn) -- Ethics , Utilitarianism
- Description: Throughout his career as moral philosopher Hare has insisted that there is a rational way of arriving at substantive moral judgements. Hare develops this view - first presented in ' The language of morals' (1952) and ' Universalizability' (1955) - into the claim that rational agents are required to adopt utilitarian solutions to moral disputes. In ' Freedom and reason ' (1963) this claim is defended with reference to the view that the formal features of moral language (universalizability and prescriptivity)commit moral agents to a certain method of reasoning, and that this method of reasoning, when conjoined with facts about people's desires and preferences, leads us to accept substantive moral judgements consistent with those required by a form of utilitarianism. This view features throughout Hare's subsequent work, but the argument for it undergoes change. This means change in the defence of the claim that the meta-theory Universal Prescriptivism is consistent with a form of normative utilitarian theory, as this claim is argued for in 'Ethical theory and utilitarianism' (1976) and 'Moral Thinking' (1981). I shall endeavour to trace the chronological development of Hare's thinking, and will concentrate on developments in the argument for a theory of act-utilitarianism. I shall argue that the argument for utilitarianism gives rise to two major problems which arise from a specific feature of the argument, namely, the attempt to run the resolution of bi-lateral and multi-lateral cases of conflict along lines analogous to the resolution of conflict in the single-person case. Hare's argument requires that a decision-maker must identify the person with whom he reverses roles as himself, and that he must be prepared to concede that the things his recipient has good reasons for wanting are also reasons for him to want the same things. I argue that it is not possible to make coherent sense of the identity of the person in the reversed-role situation and that the motivational states a decision -maker is expected to deem 'his own' are not properly states of himself. If I am right, the 'identity'-question sits at the root of a motivational gap in Hare's theory.

- Description: This study investigates Grocott’s Mail’s rape reporting through a participatory action research process. It draws on feminist cultural studies, sociology of news, and normative theories of the media to inform the research project. The participatory action research process explored three areas with the journalists at Grocott’s Mail: their understanding of the community they serve and their own professional identity as a community of practice, roles of the media in society which inform reporting, and rape as a social issue and problem. Through this process the study found that the pervasiveness of rape in the Grahamstown community, the complexities around rape reporting which include the significant legal challenges, the personal impact rape cases have on journalists, and the journalistic roles and approaches employed in rape reporting all influence how the paper covers rape. In analysing these matters the study found that the primary factor inhibiting a successful strategy for managing rape reporting was that Grocott’s Mail does not place gender-based violence on their news agenda as an issue requiring attention in order to develop the community they serve.

- Description: This study explores the perceptions of women who had migrated to Gqebera, Port Elizabeth, South Africa, from Zimbabwe, in terms of their own identity. In-depth interviews were conducted, situated within a phenomenological paradigm with a feminist epistemological orientation, in order to describe the rich detail of a woman’s quotidian existence subsequent to the migratory experience. Findings suggest that women’s identities are constructed in relation to other people, both those who form their in-group and their out-group. The process of migration and difficulties associated with assimilation into the host community impacts on felt ethnicity, strengthening ties to the homeland and to fellow Zimbabweans. Identity is also impacted on by spatiality, or lived space, in terms of both memories of home and present space occupied. Migration incorporating even the post-migration period may well form an extended liminal experience for women.

- Description: The comparative photocatalytic activities of aryloxy and arylthio tetrasubstituted oxotitanium(IV) phthalocyanine complexes for the oxidation of 1-hexene in DCM are reported for the first time. The singlet oxygen quantum yield, photostability and photocatalytic properties are investigated. The catalysts effectively catalyse 1-hexene to 1,2-epoxyhexane and 1-hexen-3-ol as major and minor products respectively. The photooxidation products are formed via two reaction mechanisms, namely via singlet oxygen (Type II) and radical (Type I) reaction pathways. These are also dependent on the singlet oxygen quantum yields and photostabilities of the phthalocyanines. Complex 1a that is peripherally substituted with phenoxy groups exhibited the best activity in terms of overall performance.

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis of manganese and titanium phthalocyanine complexes that are tetra-substituted at four non-peripheral positions with amino ligands. The complexes are investigated for the first time for their electrochemical properties using cyclic voltammetry, rotating disc electrode voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry. Electropolymerisation on a glassy carbon electrode was performed with ease and the modified electrodes were investigated for electrocatalysis of nitrite oxidation. Nitrite oxidation to nitrate is confirmed from the transfer of a total of two electrons.

- Description: Comparative electrocatalytic oxidation of nitrite by tetra aryloxy-substituted oxotitanium(IV) and tetraamino phthalocyanine complexes is investigated in this work. The aryloxy complexes are substituted at the peripheral (4) and non-peripheral (5) positions with phenoxy (complexes a), 4-tert-butylphenoxy (complexes b), benzyloxy (complexes c) and 4-(benzyloxy)phenoxy (complexes d) groups. The glassy carbon electrode was employed and modified with the tetra aryloxy-substituted titanium phthalocyanine complexes (4 and 5) by adsorption, and with titanium tetraamino phthalocyanine (TiTAPc) by polymerisation. All complexes reduced the overpotential of the nitrite electrooxidation as well as enhanced the catalytic current by a 2 electron process.

- Description: Sulfonated OTiPc(S)n and (Cl3)TaPc(S)n complexes are prepared and characterised by spectroscopic methods in DMSO, methanol and PBS 7.4. The dominant sulfonated species was the disulfophthalocyanine. OTiPc(S)n is highly aggregated in PBS 7.4 solution and tends to partially monomerise, on addition of Triton X-100, while (Cl3)TaPc(S)n showed broadened spectra in all solvents and was not affected by Triton X-100. The absorption and excitation spectra of OTiPc(S)n are similar and are mirror images of their emission spectra in DMSO, but differ in PBS and methanol. The fluorescence quantum yields (ϕF) and lifetimes (τF) were larger in DMSO than in methanol. In PBS 7.4, however, the ϕF and τF values were significantly smaller for OTiPc(S)n, which is typical of aggregated species. Gradual addition of the electron-acceptor MV2+ to solutions of MPc(S)n complexes resulted in the fluorescence quenching of complexes with higher quenching observed for OTiPc(S)n. The interaction of the MPc(S)n complexes with MV2+, and hence the stoichiometry and association constants are evaluated by means of Job method.

- Description: The purpose of this study was to explore and examine the perceptions and attitudes of Fort Hare students towards seeking psychological help. It provided an understanding of factors that influence the help-seeking behaviours of university students. The study used an explorative qualitative approach in collecting data to find problems frequently encountered by students, their preferred sources of help for those problems, and their attitudes towards seeking psychological help. The sample was selected through a non-probability convenience sampling technique. Six participants, undergraduate and post-graduate students from the University of Fort Hare, East London campus, participated in the study. The data was collected in face-to-face semi-structured individual interviews in which participants were questioned orally. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data collected from the semi-structured interviews were thematically analysed by employing Braun and Clarke’s six steps of thematic analysis. Social constructionism as a meta-theory and Ecosystems theory provided the theoretical underpinning for the interpretation of the study. The study results revealed that close friends and family members were the preferred sources of help chosen by students. Five significant problems were experienced by students. Financial issues, difficulty adjusting to the university environment, academic stress, being away from home and managing time were at the top list of the challenges experienced by students. The factors that inhibited -seeking for psychological help were social stigma, access to a psychologist, financial constraints, and viewing a psychologist as a stranger. However the study further found that students had a positive attitude toward professional psychological help. This indicates a slight shift from previous studies, which reported negative attitudes among university students. Participants also reported on the influence of their socio-cultural background, the opinions held by their family and community members towards seeking psychological help. This study recommends specific interventions in which seeking psychological help can be reinforced, such as holding workshops to psycho-educate students about the benefits of using counselling services and the negative implications of not seeking professional help when experiencing psychological distress. , Thesis (MSoc) -- Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, 2022

- Description: From Introduction: In the Preface to his book The idea of Coleridge's Criticism, Richard Harter Fogle states: There is... I am confident, a need for such a study as I here introduce; a study of Coleridge's criticism in itself, tentatively accepting the metaphysical assumptions on which it is based and focusing upon its central principles and inner relationship; endeavouring without direct regard for its external connections to the past and the present to see it as a whole, yet at the same time anxiously regardful of its permanent significance and its bearing upon practical criticism. These are the principles on which I have based this thesis, applied more particularly to Coleridge's criticism of drama.
