- Description: The concept of city branding has sprung to prominence in recent years. This can be attributed to globalisation and the ease of access to all corners of the globe with the improvements in technology and modes of transport. This increased competition for resources, skills, talent and revenue has made cities not only compete with other cities in close proximity to one another, but also with cities across the world. The answer to this conundrum was found to be a comprehensive marketing strategy composed of clever and catchy slogans, beautiful logos, media campaigns and public relations drives. This process only led to the loss of large amounts of money since the benefits were not longstanding and the results were not tangible as these avenues only benefitted the home country’s tourism industry. A long term solution for cities was needed to build a favourable image. Corporations were used as models to build a brand since manufacturers of similar products are in constant competition to gain market share and revenues from their competitors. The similarities between corporations and cities are undeniable and efforts were made to incorporate successful branding strategies from corporations into city branding efforts. Cities and corporations must be effective in developing and incorporating social, economic and political aspects of their culture into a successful city brand image. The major difference between cities and corporations stems from the fact that it takes considerably longer to leverage a comprehensive brand of a city, when compared to the brand of a product since their lifespans are completely different. In the past, city brands were based on historical significance. Today, city brands are exclusively influenced by the events it hosts. The hosting of events has been seen as a guaranteed way for a city to improve its brand image. On the contrary, the hosting of events has been found to either improve a city brand or tarnish it. Sports events have been deemed as the best way to improve a city brand because sports appeal to a wide audience and are relatively inexpensive to host in comparison to the benefit and improvements they bring. This treatise investigates the approach and various types of sports events which must be included for the successful branding of Nelson Mandela Bay as part of a destination marketing strategy. The suggestions from this study were formulated upon scrutiny of the available literature and case studies on various branding efforts undertaken by cities around the world to establish and improve their brand image. A survey was conducted amongst the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay using a questionnaire. A total of 952 responses were received. The questionnaire measured the respondents’ attitude to what types of sports events they will support, their feelings on the standard of facilities and quality of events in Nelson Mandela Bay. This treatise served to identify which sports events should be used in any branding effort undertaken by Nelson Mandela Bay. Literature and case studies served as the foundation for this study. The survey insights and expectations enabled a plan to be developed that will be unique for Nelson Mandela Bay based on its location, characteristics, tastes and preferences of its residents. This plan would serve to benefit the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay, the city itself and encourage additional investment from external sources. The results of this study indicate that the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay advocate the use of sports events as the main driver in branding the city. Furthermore, the residents have made it clear that cricket, rugby and Iron Man-type of events are favoured and more likely to be supported than any other type of sports event in Nelson Mandela Bay.

This in turn leads to higher attainment levels of social and economic development. It can therefore be said that destination marketing strategies are an essential factor in the growth and functioning of a city. The objective of destination marketing is the city’s image or identity which in turn is the starting point for developing the city’s brand. Cities require an identity. It is crucial that a city has a unique identity with which visitors, tourists and residents can relate to. Examples of these unique city identities are Los Angeles which is known as the City of Angels and Florence which is known as the City of Lilies. The image of a place influences people’s perceptions and choices when visiting, living and conducting business in a specific city. The city’s image and brand serves as a conduit for city residents to identify with their city. The essence of the brand must be discovered, identified, brought to the surface and not imagined, created or added from the outside through an artificial process. Cities that make use of effective destination marketing strategies have endured a considerable increase in business and leisure activities. Notably, business events are important attractions and drivers for activity in many destinations. Multiple parties designing a brand strategy for a city should thoroughly assess the resources and assets a city possesses. A city branding strategy can enable a city to leverage its ‘tangible and non-tangible assets‟. In order for business tourism to develop in South Africa, it is essential that players within the sector have a thorough understanding of international dynamics in order to capitalise on the opportunities that are provided in South Africa. Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa is a city with vast potential. The city is ideal as a tourist destination as it is situated along the Sunshine coast of South Africa. It could be said of the city that it is on the threshold of rising eminence in the coming decades. This treatise investigates the approach and success factors for a successful rebranding of Nelson Mandela Bay through business events as part of a destination marketing strategy. The treatise will ascertain which business events residents of the Nelson Mandela Bay would require and support. A survey was conducted among citizens of Nelson Mandela Bay using a questionnaire from which 952 responses were received. The questionnaire measured the respondents’ attitudes to which types of business events they would require and support their feelings on the brand identity of the city as well as the communication medium they would like to receive communication through. The findings of this study indicate that residents of Nelson Mandela Bay are open to the use of business events as the main driver in terms of business event attendance and support. Furthermore, the residents have made it clear they will support exhibitions, conventions and tradeshows. Facebook and local radio are identified as being the preferred communication method for hearing about events.

The study of fixed points has been a field of interests to mathematicians since the discovery of the Banach contraction theorem, i.e. if is a complete metric space and is a contraction mapping (i.e. there exists such that for all ), then has a unique fixed point. The Banach contraction theorem has found many applications in pure and applied mathematics. Due to fixed point theory being a mixture of analysis, geometry, algebra and topology, its applications to other fields such as physics, economics, game theory, chemistry, engineering and many others has become vital. The theory is nowadays a very active field of research in which many new theorems are published, some of them applied and many others generalized. Motivated by all of this, we give an exposition of some generalizations of fixed point theorems in metric fixed point theory, which is a branch of fixed point theory about results of fixed points of mappings between metric spaces, where certain properties of the mappings involved need not be preserved under equivalent metrics. For instance, the contractive property of mappings between metric spaces need not be preserved under equivalent metrics. Since metric fixed point theory is wide, we limit ourselves to fixed point theorems for self and non-self-mappings on Banach and metric spaces. We also take a look at some open problems on this topic of study. At the end of the dissertation, we suggest our own problems for future research.

- Description: The higher education sector in South Africa (SA) is currently facing financial constraints due to the admission of an increasing number of students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. In 2015, students started protesting, demanding free higher education (OECD, 2017). In addition, the unstable political situation and declining economic conditions prevailing in the country also contributes to increased financial pressure on the higher education sector. Despite these conditions, it is important for higher education institutions (HEIs) in SA to respond decisively and efficiently without sacrificing their obligation to the neighbouring countries and their international duty as set forth in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) protocol (Mello, 2013). The South African government subsidies are an important source of income for universities. The SA government subsidises the international students at the same rate as the South African students (Cilliers, 2017). According to Cilliers (2017), no funding policy is currently available, which excludes the international students from the block grant. The research for this study was guided by the question whether the exclusion of international students’ subsidies from the SA government university funding model could have an adverse financial impact on the Nelson Mandela University. This study was conducted by means of the collection and analysis of secondary quantitative data. The SA government subsidies for the international students enrolled at the Nelson Mandela University for the period 2009 to 2015 were calculated in order to answer the research question. It was concluded that if the international students were excluded from the SA government subsidies, the financial impact on the Nelson Mandela University could be approximately R64,5 million in the 2017 academic year. The outcome of this study is to enable the policymakers, government officials and university administrators to realise the financial impact on the universities if the international students were excluded from the SA government subsidies. Although this study focused on the Nelson Mandela University, the impact of the exclusion of the international students from the SA government university funding model would be significant and negative for the universities, international offices, international students and the plans to internationalise teaching, learning and research at the South African universities.

According to Cilliers (2017), no funding policy is currently available, which excludes the international students from the block grant. The research for this study was guided by the question whether the exclusion of international students’ subsidies from the SA government university funding model could have an adverse financial impact on the Nelson Mandela University. This study was conducted by means of the collection and analysis of secondary quantitative data. The SA government subsidies for the international students enrolled at the Nelson Mandela University for the period 2009 to 2015 were calculated in order to answer the research question. It was concluded that if the international students were excluded from the SA government subsidies, the financial impact on the Nelson Mandela University could be approximately R64,5 million in the 2017 academic year. The outcome of this study is to enable the policymakers, government officials and university administrators to realise the financial impact on the universities if the international students were excluded from the SA government subsidies. Although this study focused on the Nelson Mandela University, the impact of the exclusion of the international students from the SA government university funding model would be significant and negative for the universities, international offices, international students and the plans to internationalise teaching, learning and research at the South African universities.

It is evident that one of the biggest challenges that are being faced by most municipalities in South Africa, is the lack of universal access to services such as water and electricity, sanitation, refuse removal systems and local economic development. The functionalized sorbent materials were characterized by microanalysis, SEM-EDS and FT-IR. Palladium selectivity of the sorbent materials was achieved by stripping of rhodium, iridium and platinum chlorido species with 0.5 M of NaClO4 in 1 M HCl while [PdCl4]2 was eluted with 3% w/v thiourea. The desorption efficiency of thiourea was confirmed by the SEM-EDS analysis of the materials after Pd(II) elution. Palladium loading capacity of the sorbents were in the order S-NSSN (23.85 mg/g) > S-NSN (12.70 mg/g) > S-TETA (4.97 mg/g). The extraction patterns on the sorbent materials were explained by considering the coordination chemistry of the ligand with [PdCl4]2ˉ and ionic interactions of [PtCl6]2ˉ and [IrCl5(H2O]ˉ. The square planar complexes, [Pd(HNSSNH)Cl2]Cl2 and [Pd(NSNH)Cl2][PdCl4]2, were isolated, analyzed by spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray, whereas evidence of the fraction of Pd(II)-TETA complex was obtained by HPLC studies. This provided proof of the inner sphere coordination mechanism as the mode of interaction of these ligands with [PdCl4]2ˉ. Trace amounts of Brˉ anions in ligands resulted in the inadvertent isolation of bromide coordinated Pd(II) NSN and NSSN complexes. The ion-pair salts of [TETAH4]4+ with [PtCl6]2ˉ, [IrCl6]3ˉ and [RhCl6]3ˉ were also isolated and characterized by microanalysis and IR to further explain the extraction patterns.

- Description: A series of core-functionalized borinic acids was synthesized from Grignard reagents and tributylborate and reacted with ethanolamine, amino acids, 2-pyridylmethanol as well as 2-(ethyl amino ethanol). Among the borinic acids synthesized were the ones bearing: para-(2, 15, 16, 22, 27)-methyl, (3, 20, 25)-chloro, (4, 23, 26)-fluoro, (5)-methoxy; meta-(7, 17)-methyl, (9)-fluoro; ortho-(6)-methyl, (8)-chloro, (10, 18, 19)-methoxy substituents on their respective aromatic systems. All compounds obtained by condensation of the borinic acids with the aforementioned nitrogen-containing substrates were characterized structurally by means of diffraction studies based on single crystals and found to constitute chelate esters/amides featuring covalent B-O and dative N→B bonds. The substitution at the nitrogen atom with one ethyl group caused the greatest increases in the N→B bond length (27) 1.714 Å, due to the increase in the nitrogen Lewis basicity, making it the least hydrolytically stable, these include compounds (24-26). Furthermore, DFT calculations were performed by employing Becke’s three parameter hybrid exchange functional with Lee–Yang–Parr functional (B3LYP) method using the Gaussian 16 program package (Rev. This investigative research thesis presents an online surface roughness prediction, based on the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) model during Ultra-High Precision Diamond Turning (UHPDT) of Rapidly Solidified Aluminium (RSA-443) using water and kerosene as coolants. Based on the Taguchi L9 orthogonal array, the cutting parameters (spindle speed, depth of cut and feed rate) are varied at three levels. Acoustic Emission (AE) signals are detected during the UHPDT process using a piezoelectric sensor. Spindle speed, depth of cut, feed rate, AE root mean square, prominent frequency and peak rate are considered as model inputs in this thesis. The experimental results reveal that a better surface finish is obtained using water coolant in comparison to kerosene coolant. Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) based comparison between ANFIS and Response Surface Method (RSM) is carried out. In this study, the ANFIS model has a prediction accuracy of 79.42% and 69.40% on water-based and kerosene-based results respectively. The RSM model yields higher prediction accuracies of 98.59% and 95.55% on water-based and kerosene-based results respectively.

With the emergence of hybrid vehicle technology, there was also a sudden development of different electrical systems that were made viable by the higher onboard voltage systems employed in hybrid vehicles. One of these developments was the electrical air conditioning compressor for use in automobile applications. Although it is designed to operate with a higher voltage than the traditional 12V onboard vehicle systems, it is theoretically possible to incorporate it into a 12V system by making use of a DC-DC converter to step up the supply voltage of the electrical compressor sufficiently to allow for its successful operation. The question therefore arises whether it would be feasible and sensible to employ an electrical air conditioning system in conventional combustion engine vehicles from an overall fuel consumption and vehicle emissions point of view. A modelling approach was taken where an overall vehicle driving simulation was created to represent an average modern production vehicle. The simulation was then extended to include the options of incorporating models for both mechanically and electrically driven air conditioning systems. This provides insight into the influences of the air conditioning system on the vehicle’s overall fuel consumption and an opportunity to compare the influences from the two different systems. - Description: The disturbing current situation regarding the world climate has initiated a major wave of urgent developments towards decreasing the overall impact of human activities on the living environment. A major role player in this development is the automobile industry that is inherently connected to pollution of various types, be it air, water or noise pollution. This can be attributed to the effectiveness of events in solidifying the image and attractiveness of destinations. Currently, South Africa ranks as the twenty second most popular location for hosting events and has a foothold of 2.5% of the global event market share. The global pervasion of events has changed the dynamics that surround how destinations are promoted and has also significantly impacted the tourism industry and the respective tourist patterns of consumption. Literature suggests that events are gradually moving from previously being viewed as a complementary leisure activity towards becoming a primary source of attraction for destinations. Literature also confirms the extensive inclination of cities in the use of events for branding destinations. The primary problem that this study investigates is the lack of substantial knowhow with respect to how events can be presented in order to augment and enhance the attractiveness of Nelson Mandela Bay. There is no substantial blueprint that is capable of informing from the perspective of event marketers, how best they can drive a successful event marketing imperative that the local and external consumers can appreciate. Additionally, Nelson Mandela Bay has over the recent years encountered a significant amount of losses stemming from the events realm of its tourist offering. The most recent and calamitous of its losses to date has been estimated at R200 million, which escaped the coffers of the local economy as a result of the internationally applauded IRB World Sevens event moving from the metropolis to Cape Town. This has caused disconcerted and agitated sentiments across business and tourism leadership locally. Since 2011, the IRB World Sevens Series cultivated over R1 Billion towards the local economy. Losses in terms of showcasing the city to a global audience on highly established and followed media platforms are also expected. In addition, given the lack of knowledge with respect to event marketing dynamics, the “Twelve Events in Twelve Months”, an initiative that will see different event themes being launched within the twelve calendar months of the year in Nelson Mandela Bay, runs a high risk of failing to take off upon its launch because local residents and potential tourists, both national and international will lack the knowledge sufficient to stimulate their acceptance and attraction to this concept. This study aims to investigate the concepts, notions and critical success factors that event marketers can apply in order to increase the success of the event marketing imperative in Nelson Mandela Bay. The success of event marketing is expected to increase the attractiveness of Nelson Mandela Bay and brand it as a viable destination to prospective stakeholders. To evaluate the conceptual framework that was suggested by this study based on the literature review, an empirical evaluation was performed amongst the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay through the application of a questionnaire that was electronically and physically distributed. This questionnaire received 3 659 responses and measured respondents’ access and usage of media facilities. It also measured the perceptions of the current state of events in Nelson Mandela Bay. Furthermore, the questionnaire evaluated the destination image of Nelson Mandela Bay. Moreover, hypotheses were tested to evaluate the assumptions that the manner in which events are packaged, placed, positioned and promoted will enhance the attractiveness of Nelson Mandela Bay as a destination. The findings of this study suggest that the strategic bundling, placing, promoting and positioning of events is critical towards advancing an event marketing imperative and sustaining it in the long term. Additionally, the study also indicates that the successful development of a comprehensive event marketing initiative will enhance the attractiveness of Nelson Mandela Bay as a destination. The study thus concludes that event marketers can apply the proposed event marketing framework as a blueprint for informing their strategic development of event concepts in order to enhance their potential for success. The successful establishment of event offerings will consequently amplify the destination attractiveness of Nelson Mandela Bay. This research’s deliverables are expected to positively influence and reinforce the productivity of the social interactions that encompass Nelson Mandela Bay. Essentially, a framework that credibly guides the event marketer’s thinking in developing event concepts for the city is expected to enhance the attractiveness, sustaining and success of events therein. The success of events is expected to widen business prospects within the city. Moreover, eminent events are also expected to position Nelson Mandela Bay as a formidable player, and an attractive destination to aspiring investors, decision makers and visitors. This is expected to widen the resource base of the local players within the city, and motivate for more collaboration amongst them in a quest of deriving mutual gain from the city’s progression. In view of these notions, this study can be grounded in the social capital theory.

Synthesis and characterisation of oxorhenium(V) and tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes with biologically active N, O and N, S-Donor ligands

- Description: This study investigated the synthesis of rhenium(I) and rhenium(V) complexes with a variety of multidentate NS, NSO, NO and SO-donor ligands. It also investigated the synthesis of dinuclear dihalogeno- and trihalogeno-bridged rhenium(I) complexes based on the fac-[Re(CO)3]+ core. The reactions of hydrated folic acid with [Re(CO)5X] (X = Cl, Br) were studied, and the complexes [Re(CO)3(H2O)3]+[Re2(μ-X)3CO)6]−.5H2O [X= Br (1), Cl(2)] were isolated. The reaction of orotic acid potassium salt [Re(CO)5Br] was performed, and the complex [Re2(μ-Br)2(CO)8] was isolated. The reaction of bis(piperidin-1- yl)methanone with [Re(CO)5Cl] followed by recrystallisation of the resulting precipitate in dichloromethane/acetontrile resulted in the complex [Re2(μ- Cl)2(CO)6(MeCN)2]. The X-ray crystal structures show that all these complexes display a distorted octahedral geometry around the central rhenium atoms. The reactions of aroylhydrazone-based ligands such as 3-((pyridin- 2yl)methyleneamino)-2,3-dihydro-2-pyridin-2yl)quinazolin-4-(1H)-one (Hppq) and N-(di(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (Hdpmb) with [Re(CO)5Cl] were studied and led to the formation of the complexes [Re(CO)3Cl(Hdpmb)] and [Re(CO)3Cl(Hppq)]. The Hdpmb and Hppq coordinated to the fac-[Re(CO)3]+ core as neutral bidentate chalates via the pyridinic nitrogens (for Hdpmb) and via imino and pyridinic nitrogens for Hppq. The X-ray crystal structures show that the geometry around the rhenium in both complexes is a distorted octahedral. The treatment of the dithizone (H2dz) ligand with rhenium(V) precursors containing a triphenylphosphine group (PPh3) led to the decomposition of dithizone. The decomposition product reacted with the triphenylphosphine group and generated a new ligand triphenylphosphazeno-N-phenylmethanethiohydrazide (H2L). The reaction of trans-[ReOX3(PPh3)2] (X = Cl, Br) with dithizone (H2dz) led to the complex [ReO(dz)2][ReO(HL)2]. The reaction of trans-[ReOI2(OEt)(PPh3)2] with H2dz led to the same product. The reaction of cis-[ReO2I(PPh3)2] with H2dz in methanol led to [ReO(dz)2][ReO(HL)2](MeOH)2 in which methanol bonded to HLvia hydrogen bonds. The H2dz was doubly deprotonated and coordinated to the [ReO]3+ moiety via a thiolate sulfur and deprotonated hydrazinic nitrogen to yield [ReO(dz)2]−, while the H2L was singly deprotonated and coordinated to [ReO]3+ moiety via the neutral sulfur atom and deprotonated hydrazinic nitrogen to yield [ReO(HL)2]+. - Description: Coordination properties of 4-bromo-N-(diethylcarbamothioyl)benzamide (Hbeb) and 4-bromo-N-(diphenylcarbamothioyl)benzamide (Hbpb) with oxorhenium(V) and rhenium(I) are reported and discussed. Transition metal complexes of these ligands were studied due to the wide range of applications of thiourea derivatives in biological fields. N-[Di(alkyl/aryl)carbamothioyl]benzamide derivatives readily coordinate to metal ions as O,S-donors and the catalytic property of the complexes can be altered by these ligands, due to steric and electronic properties provided by various substituents. The coordination possibilities of curcumin with rhenium(V) are discussed, as well as the difficulties encountered. Analogues of curcumin have been made, which also contains a seven-spacer unit between the phenyl rings, which would be more reactive and more effective in bonding to rhenium and which have greater or a similar biological activity to curcumin. This was done by assessing the coordination properties of 1,5-bis(salicylidene)thiocarbohydrazide (H4salt) and 2,4-bis(vanilidene)thiocarbohydrazide (H4vant) with oxorhenium(V) and rhenium(I) starting materials. Two rhenium(V) complex salts of the core [ReX(PPh3)2]4+ (X = Br, I), containing a coordinated imido nitrogen, are reported. One is a ‘2+1’ complex, coordinating bi- and monodentately, with the other a similar ‘3+0’ complex containing a tridentate imido-coordinated Schiff base. Selected compounds were tested against oesophageal cancer cell lines in order to evaluate and compare their effectiveness in eliminating or reducing the cancer cells in the test medium during biological testing.

Analogues of curcumin have been made, which also contains a seven-spacer unit between the phenyl rings, which would be more reactive and more effective in bonding to rhenium and which have greater or a similar biological activity to curcumin. This was done by assessing the coordination properties of 1,5-bis(salicylidene)thiocarbohydrazide (H4salt) and 2,4-bis(vanilidene)thiocarbohydrazide (H4vant) with oxorhenium(V) and rhenium(I) starting materials. Two rhenium(V) complex salts of the core [ReX(PPh3)2]4+ (X = Br, I), containing a coordinated imido nitrogen, are reported. One is a ‘2+1’ complex, coordinating bi- and monodentately, with the other a similar ‘3+0’ complex containing a tridentate imido-coordinated Schiff base. Selected compounds were tested against oesophageal cancer cell lines in order to evaluate and compare their effectiveness in eliminating or reducing the cancer cells in the test medium during biological testing.
