- Description: The study explored the experiences of children who have transitioned into foster care, looking in depth at their level of participation in matters concerning their lives. The researcher was predominantly inspired to conduct this research by children in communities who found themselves falling unintentionally into a system of foster care. There are overt hardships in communities that result in children needing care and protection. Children find themselves faced with abusive circumstances, experiencing loss and being abandoned. There is little research on experiences of children who have transitioned into foster care, on child participation in matters that involve their lives, and research that documents the perspectives of children. Children’s ability to exercise their constitutional right to participate, and making their voices heard regarding their life experiences through their own milieu, have also not received attention. There are several intervention systems put in place by the South African government to aid children in need of care and protection, and systems to place children in conducive environments. These systems are largely focused on placement of the child in need, application for foster care grants, foster parents, and the extension of the foster placement. However, there is very little information regarding the child’s right to participate in matters that involve their lives. The goal of the study was to investigate children’s participation in matters that affect their lives. It was interested in children’s perspectives. The aim was to explore the experiences of children who had transitioned into the foster care system in Breidbach Community in King Williams Town it Buffalo City Municipality. The purpose was to identify gaps, as there is minimal information concerning experiences of children who have transitioned into foster care and on children’s participation as stipulated within section 10 of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005. To be able to achieve the objectives of the study, interviews were conducted with purposefully sampled participants. Data obtained was analysed according to qualitative data analysis procedures. The researcher utilised exploratory, descriptive and contextual research designs. The domain where participants were interviewed was Breidbach, King Williams Town, and Buffalo City under the jurisdiction of the Department of Social Development (DSD) and Child Protection Organisations (CPO). Findings indicate the children lacked education on their right to participate in matters that affect their lives. Furthermore, some professionals did not involve the children in matters that affected them, leading to interventions on matters concerning the children that did not benefit from input by the children. Taking into cognisance of all the relevant information stated above, children’s right to participate in matters involving their lives is as paramount as the involvement of the social workers and the foster parents when determining their placement. A holistic approach has to be used, hence it is primary and recommended that, the investigation, intervention strategies and framework used by social workers in making sure that children in need of care and protection include the perspectives of children who are to be placed into foster care. This study addresses psychosocial experiences of caregivers, such as, scorning, isolation and anxiety, which affect their well-being in adverse ways, and that continues to be overlooked by professionals dealing with mental health. This study sought to explore psychosocial experiences of caregivers of mentally challenged children in Alice in the Eastern Cape in South Africa. The study intended to uncover the psychosocial wellbeing of caregivers of mentally challenged children. Secondly, it set out to highlight the coping mechanisms employed by caregivers of mentally challenged children to deal with their psychosocial experiences. Lastly, the study sought to examine policies, legislation and support services in place for psychosocial care of caregivers of mentally challenged children. The researcher adopted qualitative research methods. Snowball sampling was employed to recruit 15 caregivers of mentally challenged children in Alice. The age of the caregivers ranged between the ages of 20 and 65. In addition, purposive sampling was adopted to recruit six professionals working with mental health in Alice. All the participants were black Africans. The gender comprised of thirteen females and two males. Data was collected through the use of face-to-face, semi-structured individual interviews, one interview per research participant, with the caregivers of mentally challenged children, and through the use of one focus group discussion with professionals dealing with mental health. The researcher analysed data through thematic content analysis. The study findings indicate that caregivers of mentally challenged children experience the caregiving process negatively, with a lot of burden. It also appears that they do not cope positively with such experiences despite professionally-trained personnel that are obliged by the Social Assistance Act and other government policies to ensure that caregivers receive sufficient psychosocial services. Findings also indicate that there is very little that is done by the relevant professionals in ensuring that they render sufficient professional support services to caregivers, such as needs assessment and therapeutic services. In light of the findings, the study concludes that there is a need for continuous rendering of comprehensive psychosocial support services to the caregivers of mentally challenged children. It is also recommended that social workers empower caregivers for mentally challenged children so that they can function effectively in their communities. Further, the government needs to reinforce existing policies that afford these psychosocial services, such as Integrated National Strategy on Support Services to Children with Disabilities. Exploring the psychosocial effects of removing teenagers from their homes to places of safety

- Description: The child welfare system investigate over 2 Million children each year for parental abuse or neglect, yet little is known about the psychosocial effects of removing teenagers from their homes and placing them in the place of safety. Although an abusive family would undoubtedly be harmful to children, removing a child from his or her family can be just as traumatic. Long term outcome are rarely observed, and teenagers placed in the place of safety are likely differ from those not placed. Hence this study took a microscopic scrutiny at the effects of the teenager`s removal from their home environment to a place of safety. In carrying out this research qualitative method of data collection was used. The study outlined the factors that lead to removal of teenagers from their home environment to the place of safety. The study found that some of the teenagers who were removed from their home environment were due to poverty, maltreatment, negligence and child abuse at home. The study also revealed that the placement of the teenagers in the places of safety expose the teenagers to psychological, physical, emotional and behavioural negative experiences. The teenagers that participated in the study mentioned that they are stigmatised by the community and peers at school, some also cited that they have lost contact with their families. It was also found out that; the professionals who participated in the study also too experience some challenges in rendering services to the teenagers as sometimes they don`t get informed about the children`s situation on their arrival in the centre. On the other hand, another professional declared that they are trying by all means to cater for all the needs of the children, but they are failed by the case managers and other stakeholders, such as department of social development who delay the process of obtaining court orders which makes it difficult for the child to be funded and also the process of reunifying the child with the biological family.

Adolescence is a critical period for physical, social, and emotional development, and the possibility of adolescents engaging in sexual intercourse is an important social and public health consideration. Sexual intercourse among adolescents is a risk factor for teen pregnancy, clandestine abortions, sexually transmitted infection, school dropouts, and HIV. Adolescents who engage in sexual intercourse may also be exposed to harmful lifestyles, such as use of illicit drugs, alcohol, and cigarette smoking. The South African national HIV public health interventions among adolescents have largely been geared towards sexual abstinence; this emphasis in the prevention interventions may be limited as it may not cater for adolescents with diverse experiences. The study intended to achieve the following specific objectives: to examine the challenges faced by sexual adolescent females; to assess the support services from the social network; and to examine the strategies that are put in place by professionals in supporting teenagers who are sexually active. The study was guided by a qualitative research design in the form of a case study. It also employed in-depth one-on-one interviews, complimented by both focus group discussions and key informants as methods of data collection. The study used nonprobability methodology of sample selection, specifically the purposive sampling technique as well as a snowball . A sample of the study comprised of the nonstudent participants, psychologist, teachers, social workers, Nurses, police officers and other community members Data was analysed qualitatively through content thematic data analysis, which used interpretative approaches and textual presentation. The study established the following: the adolescent stage is a critical time for young girls because of the physical, biological as well as the social changes that they face and need to go through. The factors that face young girls are from all aspects of life; from the home, the community as well as individual factors. The most important factor affecting adolescent females to emerge from the study was social media as a tool that young girls used to learn about sexual behaviour as well as communicating amongst themselves as well as with their sexual partners. 6 The study recommended that the family system needed strengthening. The home is the first place that young girls feel protected, and when the family system is broken down the adolescent females start to look outside and start misbehaving, and end up being sexually active. There should be continuous social work services provided to female adolescents as some are staying alone

Psycho social challenges faced by children who are victims of rape in the victim support centre : a case study of Kwanobuhle area, Eastern Cape

The aim of the study was to determine the psychosocial effects (effects. challenges, support services they receive from professionals) as victims of rape in a victim support center. It was a case study of KwaNobuhle Area, Eastern Cape. The purpose was to identify gaps as there are minimal services rendered to children as rape victims in the victim support Centre. In order to meet the objectives of the study, interviews were conducted to 20 victims of rape (both boys and girls) as well as 6 different professionals working with rape cases from the arrival of the child from the opening until the finalization of the case. Data were analyzed according to the qualitative data - analysis procedures. The researcher utilized the phenomenological research design. The research domain where the interviews took place was at the KwaNobuhle Area under the Department of Social Development jurisdiction. In this study, 20 Xhosa speaking children of different ages, gender, educational standards, and socio-economic backgrounds as well as those who suffered different types of rape, as defined by the Sexual Related Matters Act 32 of 2007; they were all interviewed through the use of a semi-structured interview schedule. The participants were purposively selected as they were all at the victim support center. It has been found that some services are not provided within and are other professionals lack knowledge on how to work effectively with children as victims of rape To add on, the theoretical framework that was used in this study is the victim empowerment theory. This was used as a way of empowering the children who are victims of rape in the Victim Support Centres. The study found out that children who are victims of rape in the Victim Support Centres face psychosocial challenges for instance emotional, educational and behavioural challenges. Furthermore, the study also found out that there are few pschologists in the Victim Support Centres. Therefore, the study recommend that more psychologists should be employed at the Department of health and be placed in Victim Support Centres. More, so, there should be constant supervision and guidance on the care givers within the institution on how to effectively deal with the children who are victims of rape in VSC to avoid psychosocial challenges.
