- Description: The effectiveness of established biological control agents depends on biotic and abiotic interactions in the introduced range. The weevil, Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), was released as a biological control against Salvinia molesta D.S. Mitchell (Salviniaceae) in South Africa in 1985. This agent has been highly successful against S. molesta and has significantly reduced the weed’s populations around the country. However, in 2007, the parasitic alga, Helicosporidium sp. (an undescribed species), was detected in field-collected C. salviniae adults in South Africa. The distribution and impacts of this disease on the weevil and its efficacy as a control agent were not known. In this thesis, the prevalence, infection load, and impact of Helicosporidium sp. on C. salviniae was determined. In 2019, adult weevils were collected from 10 sites across the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Western Cape provinces and screened to determine the occurrence, infection load, and geographic distribution of Helicosporidium sp. Transmission mechanisms of this disease in C. salviniae were then evaluated. The possible impact of Helicosporidium sp. was assessed by comparing the feeding rates and the reproductive output of the diseased and healthy adults of C. salviniae. An attempt was then made to eliminate the disease in C. salviniae through the application of the antibiotic, ketoconazole. Further, the role of temperature on infection load in C. salviniae was also assessed. Finally, recommendations for the long-term biological control programme against S. molesta in South Africa were made. The disease covers the entire distribution range of C. salviniae in South Africa, with the disease occurrence rate ranging from 92.15% to 100% insects infected per site. Helicosporidium sp. was found to transmit vertically within the populations of C. salviniae. Infection by the Helicosporidium sp. disease reduced the reproductive output of C. salviniae as well its impact on biomass reduction of S. molesta when a diseased culture was compared to a healthy culture from the USA. 98.44 to 98.55% of Helicosporidium sp. loads were reduced through multiple applications of ketoconazole concentrations under in vitro trials. In vivo treatments resulted in 70% control of Helicosporidium sp. in the adults of C. salviniae that were fed ketoconazole three times over a 21 day period. Adult C. salviniae feeding and survival performances were similar when fed fronds of S. molesta inoculated with ketoconazole and water. The lowest and highest disease loads of Helicosporidium sp. were recorded when the weevils were reared at 30°C and 14°C, respectively. As expected, the highest impact and reproductive output of C. salviniae were at 30°C. The evaluations discussed in this thesis highlight the role of diseases in biological control agents, and gaps in both the pre-release and post-release monitoring that should integrate screening of diseases in these studies. Although the combined application of the antibiotic and temperature will reduce Helicosporidium sp. loads and impact, this technology is most likely only applicable where the weevils are reared in small numbers in a rearing facility and not really applicable to the field situation. It is important to release healthy agents that will cause efficient control of the target weed plant species, therefore, when introducing new biological control agents, the health status of such agents needs to be understood. Therefore, long-term field monitoring and assessment of the impact of C. salviniae on S. molesta should be conducted to track all the changes that may result due to the presence of Helicosporidium sp. - Description: The thesis explores the relationship between ethnicity, marginalisation, and survival mechanisms amongst the Kalanga people of Mangwe (southwestern Zimbabwe) from the 1940s up until the turn of the 21st century. The study showed how the Kalanga of Mangwe have used ethnicity as a concept to not only claim access to resources but also develop alternative survival strategies that help them seek to navigate their experiences of marginalisation by both the state and the hegemonic position of the Ndebele who dominate the region politically and linguistically. Using evidence from activities such as cross border migration and the mopane economy, I showed how the Kalanga express their displeasure at being dominated through engagement, as was shown in their attempt to fight for their language, for example in the 1940s through regionalised Kalanga organisations as the Kalanga Language and Cultural Development Society (KLCDS), to disengagement such as migration and illegal informal cross border trade. Using ‘conviviality’ and ‘the everyday’, as well as borrowing from the Race Relations Theory (RRT) of Robert Ezra Park as theoretical underpinnings, I demonstrated how amongst the Kalanga of Mangwe ethnic identity can lead to competition for resources, which in turn leads to marginalisation and discrimination which influences their social, political and economic choices that may in turn reinforce ethnic identity in a cycle like scenario. Developing taxonomic and trait-based approaches for assessing and predicting macroinvertebrate responses to elevated fine sediments in the Tsitsa River and its tributaries, South Africa

- Description: Sedimentation of freshwater systems is one of the leading causes of water quality deterioration. The Mzimvubu River catchment, which includes the Tsitsa River and its tributaries, in the Eastern Cape is prone to elevated sediment impact due to dispersive soils that are easily erodible. In this study, taxonomy and trait-based approaches were used to assess the responses of macroinvertebrates to fine sediments in the Tsitsa River and its tributaries. Macroinvertebrates and environmental variables were sampled seasonally in winter, spring, summer and autumn of 2016 to 2018 in six selected sites, using the South African Scoring System version 5 as a collecting protocol. The sites were selected to represent a decreasing gradient of sediment influence from the highly impacted Sites 1 (Tsitsa upstream) 2 (Tsitsa downstream), and 3 (Qurana River) to moderately impacted Sites 4 (Millstream upstream) and 5 (Millstream downstream) and the least impacted Sites 6 (Pot River upstream), 7 (Little Pot River) and 8 (Pot River downstream), which were collectively referred to as the control sites. Analysis of basic physico-chemical variables, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, total suspended solids, temperature and nutrients were undertaken seasonally over the study period. Sediments grain sizes were also analysed. All collected data were subjected to appropriate statistical tests – univariate and multivariate techniques. A fine-sediment-specific multimetric index was developed to monitor the impact of fine sediments on macroinvertebrate assemblages of the Tsitsa River and its tributaries. A total of 12 traits, resolved into 48 trait attributes, were selected to explore their distribution in relation to a fine-sediment stress gradient, and identify the trait-based signature of fine-sediment impact. A trait-based approach was then developed to classify South African macroinvertebrates into two groups: taxa that are potentially vulnerable to fine-sediment impact and those potentially resilient, based on the combination of traits possessed. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that electrical conductivity, turbidity, embeddedness and total suspended solids were statistically significantly different between the sites. Apart from Dissolved oxygen, the remaining variables were statistically significantly lower at the control sites (P < 0.05). The two-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated global significant differences between sites and seasons. The two-way MANOVA also revealed that the interaction between the sites and seasons were statistically significant. The MANOVA indicated global combined interactive effects across the sites for suspended fine-sediment grain sizes, two-way ANOVA, followed by a Tukey’s post-hoc test, was carried out to indicate where the significant differences lay. The one-way ANOVA results indicated that very fine sand, very coarse silt, medium silt, and fine silt were significantly higher at Tsitsa upstream, Tsitsa downstream, Qurana tributary that is at Millstream upstream, Millstream downstream and Control sites. The rest of the grain sizes did not differ statistically between the sites. In terms of the settled sediment grain sizes, the volumetric analysis did not show considerable differences across the sites. Settled fine-sediment grain sizes were evenly distributed across the sites. Statistically, MANOVA results indicated no significant differences across sites or across seasons. The developed Sediment Multimetric Index indicated that the sites in the Tsitsa River and those in the Qurana River were highly sedimented during the wet season, but became moderately sedimented during the dry season, indicating that the index responded to seasonality. The sediment multimetric index indicated that the control sites were less sedimented during both the wet season and dry seasons, suggesting minimal seasonal effects at the control sites. Traits such as an exposed and soft body, collector-filterers, shredding, feeding on coarse particulate organic matter and a high sensitivity to dissolved oxygen were identified as fine- sediment-sensitive indicator traits. Identified fine-sediment-tolerant traits and ecological preferences included complete sclerotisation, a cased/tubed body, a preference for fine particulate organic matter, a high tolerance to dissolved oxygen depletion, and climbing and skating behaviours. Regarding the trait-based approach followed for classifying macroinvertebrates into vulnerable taxa and resilient taxa, the results revealed that the relative abundance and richness of the vulnerable taxa decreased predictably along the increasing gradient of sediment impact. However, the relative abundance and richness of resilient taxa showed no marked response to the impact of an increasing gradient of fine sediments. Overall, the present study makes a contribution to the complementary application of trait-and taxonomy-based approaches to freshwater biomonitoring. The trait-based approach enables predictions to be made and tested based on the mechanistic understanding of the mediating roles of traits in organism- environment interaction. A fundamental challenge, which showcases the limitation of the current study, is the sparse trait data on Afrotropical macroinvertebrates at the species or generic levels. In this regard, the iv trait-based approaches developed here were the family level instead of species or genus. A wideband spectropolarimetry study of the spatially resolved radio galaxies: Cygnus A & Hydra A

- Description: This study presented results from our deep, wideband, high-spectral and high-spatial-resolution polarisation observations of the two most powerful radio galaxies, namely Cygnus A and Hydra A, with the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA). The high surface brightness and strong polarisation of these radio sources enabled detailed polarimetric imaging, providing images at 0.75′′ resolution across 2−18 GHz and 2000 independent lines-of-sight across Cygnus A, and images at 1.5′′ (2 − 12 GHz) and 600 lines-of-sight across Hydra A. Our data revealed significant depolarisation and depolarisation structure, as well as deviations from a _2-law. We also found complicated structures in the Faraday spectra ranging from single-peaked to blended/resolved double- and multiple-peaked. The Faraday spectra of Hydra A were more multiple-peaked than Cygnus A. The fractional polarisation increased monotonically with increasing resolution, as expected. However, there were numerous lines-of-sight with complicated behaviour. We also found that the structure and complexity in the depolarisation increased at lower resolutions, suggesting substantial spatial structures across the lobes/tails. We fitted the 0.3′′ (6−18 GHz) and 0.50′′ (6−12 GHz) images of Cygnus A and Hydra A, respectively, with a simple model incorporating random, unresolved fluctuations in the cluster magnetic field to determine the high-resolution, high-frequency properties of the sources and the cluster. We found rotation measures (RM) between −5000 rad m−2 and +6400 rad m−2 across Cygnus A, and −2000 rad m−2 and +11900 rad m−2 across Hydra A, consistent with previous studies. From these derived properties, we generated predicted polarisation images of the sources at lower frequencies (< 6 GHz), convolved to 0.75′′ for Cygnus A and 1.5′′ for Hydra A. The predictions were remarkably consistent with the observed emission in both sources, providing strong support for the depolarisation being a result of unresolved fluctuations in the magnetic fields. We fitted various analytical models to the wideband data. We found that the data for both sources were inconsistent with a wholly mixed gas of thermal and synchrotron gas, particularly for regions withRM > 1000 rad m−2. Instead, the data required a dominant Faraday rotating screen in the foreground of the radio sources. The wideband modelling also showed preference towards models with at least two or more unresolved Faraday rotating patches. Single depolarising models fail to describe the data. - Description: This study presented results from our deep, wideband, high-spectral and high-spatial-resolution polarisation observations of the two most powerful radio galaxies, namely Cygnus A and Hydra A, with the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA). The high surface brightness and strong polarisation of these radio sources enabled detailed polarimetric imaging, providing images at 0.75′′ resolution across 2−18 GHz and 2000 independent lines-of-sight across Cygnus A, and images at 1.5′′ (2 − 12 GHz) and 600 lines-of-sight across Hydra A. Our data revealed significant depolarisation and depolarisation structure, as well as deviations from a _2-law. We also found complicated structures in the Faraday spectra ranging from single-peaked to blended/resolved double- and multiple-peaked. The Faraday spectra of Hydra A were more multiple-peaked than Cygnus A. The fractional polarisation increased monotonically with increasing resolution, as expected. However, there were numerous lines-of-sight with complicated behaviour. We also found that the structure and complexity in the depolarisation increased at lower resolutions, suggesting substantial spatial structures across the lobes/tails. We fitted the 0.3′′ (6−18 GHz) and 0.50′′ (6−12 GHz) images of Cygnus A and Hydra A, respectively, with a simple model incorporating random, unresolved fluctuations in the cluster magnetic field to determine the high-resolution, high-frequency properties of the sources and the cluster. We found rotation measures (RM) between −5000 rad m−2 and +6400 rad m−2 across Cygnus A, and −2000 rad m−2 and +11900 rad m−2 across Hydra A, consistent with previous studies. From these derived properties, we generated predicted polarisation images of the sources at lower frequencies (< 6 GHz), convolved to 0.75′′ for Cygnus A and 1.5′′ for Hydra A. The predictions were remarkably consistent with the observed emission in both sources, providing strong support for the depolarisation being a result of unresolved fluctuations in the magnetic fields. We fitted various analytical models to the wideband data. We found that the data for both sources were inconsistent with a wholly mixed gas of thermal and synchrotron gas, particularly for regions withRM > 1000 rad m−2. Instead, the data required a dominant Faraday rotating screen in the foreground of the radio sources. The wideband modelling also showed preference towards models with at least two or more unresolved Faraday rotating patches. Single depolarising models fail to describe the data. This research attempted to evaluate the impact of vegetation, lithology, and particle size controls on the ability of magnetic signatures to discriminate between lithology-defined potential sources. Potential source samples were collected from each lithology present in all catchments, except for the Lugmag catchment where the lithology was uniform, but the vegetation type varied significantly between woodland and grassland. One sediment core was taken in each of the four catchment reservoirs where there was more than one lithology present in order to unmix and apportion contributing sediment sources. Sampling time in the field was often restricted to short periods, dependent on anti-poaching activities and movement of free-roaming wildlife across the Park. This occasionally led to the sub-optimal collection of enough source samples to capture source signature variability. Mineral magnetic parameters were unable to discriminate between vegetation-defined sediment sources in the Lugmag catchment (homogenous underlying lithology) but were able to discriminate between lithology-defined sediment sources (to varying degrees) in the other four catchments. The contributions of each lithology-defined sediment source were estimated using a straightforward statistical protocol frequently used in published literature that included a Mann-Whitney U or Kruskal-Wallis H test, mass conservation test, discriminant function analysis, and an (un)mixing model. A contribution from each lithology source to reservoir sediment was estimated. Connectivity was a significant factor in understanding erosion in each of the catchments. Both longitudinal (e.g., drainage density) and lateral connectivity (e.g., floodplain - river) were important. Travel distance of eroded sediment to reservoirs was also an essential element in two of the four catchments. There are no defined floodplains, so channel bank soils are very similar to the catchment soils. Therefore, channel bank storage potential would be similar to the storage potential within the catchment. Vegetation played a crucial role in protecting soils, by reducing ii erosion potential as well as trapping and storing sediment, thereby interrupting lateral connectivity. Underlying geology and soils are determining factors of vegetation type and density. A published study estimated catchment area-specific sediment yields for different KNP catchments, including the Hartbeesfontein, Marheya, Nhlanganzwani and Silolweni catchments. The published data was used in combination with the (un)mixing model source contribution estimates of this thesis to determine specific sediment yields by lithology, i.e., for each catchment source. The polymodal particle size characteristics of the sample material led to an investigation into particle size controls on the ability of magnetic signatures to discriminate between potential sources. Due to time constraints, only the Hartbeesfontein and Marheya catchments were tested for grain size differences. For each catchment, one bulk sample was created for each lithology source. This bulk sample was divided into 10 subsamples. The samples were then fractionated into four particle size fraction groups: coarse (250 – 500 μm), medium (125 – 250 μm), fine (63 – 125 μm), and very fine (<63 μm). Reservoir samples were also bulked to create 10 down-core samples for each reservoir, and the samples were also fractionated into the four fraction groups. The same statistical protocol was applied to the fractionated samples and contribution estimates were obtained by lithology for each particle size fraction group. The goodness of fit and uncertainty of the (un)mixing model varied in each catchment, with the two measures of accuracy often showing an inverse relationship. The fractionated modelling estimated the same primary source in the two catchments as in the unfractionated modelling. However, additional information on the secondary and tertiary sources was obtained. Connectivity remained a significant factor in interpreting the results of the fractionated analysis. Specific sediment yields were estimated for each catchment source per particle size fraction group. These sediment yields provided a deeper understanding of sediment transport through a catchment and which particle size groups are most important in catchment erosion. Pharmacological investigation of Citrus limon leaf extract and its efficacy as biofungicide against potato rot disease

- Description: Potato, the fourth major staple and economic food crop is readily attacked by fungal pathogens. This is of public and economic importance. Interests have shifted from the age-old rot management by synthetic fungicide to botanicals due to the attended negative effects of the former. The bioactive molecules domicile in plants have been found to possess pharmacological properties against diverse pathogens of plants and animals. This study investigated the pharmacological properties of the Citrus limon leaf extracts of using different leaf solvent extracts and the potential utilization of these extracts in managing potato rot diseases. The tubers were purchased from selected supermarkets within Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. A survey study was carried out by using a well-structured designed questionnaire administered to selected supermarkets in three major towns namely; Alice, King Williams Town and Fort Beaufort. The questionnaires were randomly administered to 62 supermarket owners in each of the selected super markets. Rotten potato tubers were randomly collected from these supermarkets. On each occasion, the tubers were packaged in a sterile polythene bag and taken to the laboratory for isolation and identification of the pathogens associated with the disease (rot) using standard mycological techniques. Fresh leaves of Citrus limon were collected from a residential area within the study location, processed and extracted using water, ethanol and acetone solvents before analysing their phytochemical contents, antioxidant properties and antifungal activites against the rotten potato tuber pathogens at graded concentrations of 25g/l, 50g/l and 100g/l. Effects of different temperatures (10-40oC) on the tuber weight loss and mycelia growth were also evaluated. Analysis of the results revealed that the supermarket owners incurred economic loss of 43percentwith annual potato loss incurement of R1501- 2000. The losses occurred more in the warmer summer seasons. About 91percent of the respondents agreed to use any novel botanicals, as alternatives to the increasing artificial fungicides due to their high costs, toxic nature and the environmental hazard effects. Phytochemical results showed that the ethanol extracts yielded the highest total flavonoid quantification of 1052.58±39.44mg GAE/g, followed by phenols (209.72 ± 6.38 GAE/g), alkaloid (12.23percent) and saponin (5.53percent). There was no significant difference in phenol content between the acetone and ethanol; but a significant difference (P < 0.05) was observed for the aqueous extracts of C. limon leaf. The aqueous, acetone and ethanol leaf extracts also showed significantly high antioxidant capacity with the ABTS (67.85percent - 90.85percent), FRAP (128.26 - 182.12 mgRE/g) and DPPH (28.72percent - 33.64percent). The fungal pathogens isolated from rotten potato tubers were identified as Curvularia mebaldsii, Fusarium oxysporum and Penicillium species. The effect of C. limon leaf extracts on the isolates was concentration and extracting solvent dependent. For the aqueous solvent, the mycelial growth of Penicillium species were most inhibited with 95.82 ± 0.11percent, 89.1 ± 0.19percent and 74.81 ± 0.82 percent, followed by F. oxysporum with 76 ± 2.83, 76percent ± 5.95percent and 29.05 ± 3.17percent and Curvularia mebaldsii (68.46 ± 3.0percent, 63.76 ± 2.87 percent and 53.47± 3.64percent) respectively. However, the ethanol and acetone extracts at 100g/l concentrations displayed a 100percent growth inhibition against the three rot fungi. The effects 50g/l ethanol concentration also showed 100percent against both F. oxysporum and C. mebaldsii, but 90.97percent against Penicillium sp. The growth inhibition at 25g/l extract against F. oxysporum were 99percent and 96.52percent for acetone and ethanol extracts respectively, but 96.52percent and 85.57percent against C. mebaldsii and Penicillium sp. respectively. The effects of temperature on the average radial mycelial growth of fungal isolates at 10oC, 20oC, 30oC, and 40oC were 17.53 mm, 28.33 mm, 42.33 mm, and 34.50 mm respectively. The highest percentage weight loss of infected potato was 19.53percent at 30oC, while the lowest was 5.12percent at 10oC. The optimal temperature of maximum activities of the isolates was 30oC and this indicates that healthy potato tubers stored at 30oC will undergo faster fungal deterioration and spoilage than those stored at 10oC. The findings indicated that the ethanol and acetone extracts displayed significantly higher phytochemicals, antioxidant properties and in vitro antifungal activity against the potato rot disease fungal pathogens. The nature of violence in South African universities African universities: The politics of process

- Description: The high levels of violence that plague South Africa’s universities are symptomatic of an education system that is under attack, with institutions of higher learning not reflecting the peacefulness and safety which are oftentimes associated with the pursuit of learning. While violence in societies and educational institutions globally continues to intensify in viciousness and frequency, this is especially worrisome for South Africa, a country regarded as one of the most violent in the world. South African education institutions are admittedly extremely violent, yet there are relatively few mechanisms to enable the verification of trends in violence, or to cross-reference and compare incidents, thus making the reduction of violence problematic. The contention is that the general outlook of violence at educational institutions appears to echo the relentless violence which haunts South African communities in general. Against this background, the current study sought to explore the nature of violence in South African universities. To achieve this, the study was guided by an exploration of student and staff experiences of violence in universities, the causes of violence in such sites, and the recording thereof. Underpinned by a pragmatist paradigm, this study utilised a mixed-methods approach to ‘get under the skin’ of the problem of violence in universities. Within the mixed-methods approach, the study employed a single-phase convergent design, which enabled the researcher to reach comprehensive conclusions on violence in universities, by merging and comparing qualitative and quantitative datasets. In the quantitative phase of the study, a simple random sampling technique was used to select a total of 1 776 students and 250 staff, while 32 students and four staff were conveniently sampled during the qualitative phase. The data for this study were collected using an online survey in the quantitative phase, and semi-structured interviews and document reviews in the qualitative phase. The findings of this investigation revealed that violence happened in six main configurations, namely student-on-student violence, staff-on-student violence, staff-on-staff violence, student-on-staff violence, self-directed violence, and protest-related violence. In addition, the findings revealed diverse causes of violence in universities, chief of which were alcohol and drug abuse, poor security, the abuse of power or authority, impunity, and psychosocial factors, among others. Factors that impeded the recording of violence in universities included the normalisation of violence, a lack of consequences for the perpetrators, a lack of procedural awareness, cronyism and brotherhoods, and a lack of protection from reprisal for reporting perpetrators. The production of violence in South African universities was also found to be significantly shaped by wider structures that included sexuality, gender, age, socioeconomic status, and race and ethnicity. These structures were found to be prominent in increasing the likelihood of violence being perpetrated. Based on the reported findings, the study moved to recommend that, in order to reduce experiences of violence in South African universities, institutions adopt multidimensional approaches to combatting this scourge. The fact that violence was noted to occur in multiple configurations, means multiple viewpoints are required to reduce and ultimately combat it. This calls for a multi-stakeholder approach that transcends a reliance on the traditional university policymakers, and a concerted consultative process to formulate and renew policies that can help to address university violence. The study further recommended that reporting structures be decentralised at universities, in a bid to improve the smoothness of related processes. In this respect, it will be essential for universities to consider setting up anonymous reporting platforms online, to move with the times and ensure more urgent responses, as opposed to a continued reliance on present systems that are replete with red tape. Additionally, universities may consider outsourcing divisions that deal with violence reporting, to minimise conflicts of interest when dealing with such cases. The researcher concluded that violence in universities threatens the very purpose of tertiary education – members of the university community must be able to freely pursue their aspirations in peaceful environments. - Description: The high levels of violence that plague South Africa’s universities are symptomatic of an education system that is under attack, with institutions of higher learning not reflecting the peacefulness and safety which are oftentimes associated with the pursuit of learning. While violence in societies and educational institutions globally continues to intensify in viciousness and frequency, this is especially worrisome for South Africa, a country regarded as one of the most violent in the world. South African education institutions are admittedly extremely violent, yet there are relatively few mechanisms to enable the verification of trends in violence, or to cross-reference and compare incidents, thus making the reduction of violence problematic. The contention is that the general outlook of violence at educational institutions appears to echo the relentless violence which haunts South African communities in general. Against this background, the current study sought to explore the nature of violence in South African universities. To achieve this, the study was guided by an exploration of student and staff experiences of violence in universities, the causes of violence in such sites, and the recording thereof. Underpinned by a pragmatist paradigm, this study utilised a mixed-methods approach to ‘get under the skin’ of the problem of violence in universities. Within the mixed-methods approach, the study employed a single-phase convergent design, which enabled the researcher to reach comprehensive conclusions on violence in universities, by merging and comparing qualitative and quantitative datasets. In the quantitative phase of the study, a simple random sampling technique was used to select a total of 1 776 students and 250 staff, while 32 students and four staff were conveniently sampled during the qualitative phase. The data for this study were collected using an online survey in the quantitative phase, and semi-structured interviews and document reviews in the qualitative phase. The findings of this investigation revealed that violence happened in six main configurations, namely student-on-student violence, staff-on-student violence, staff-on-staff violence, student-on-staff violence, self-directed violence, and protest-related violence. In addition, the findings revealed diverse causes of violence in universities, chief of which were alcohol and drug abuse, poor security, the abuse of power or authority, impunity, and psychosocial factors, among others. Factors that impeded the recording of violence in universities included the normalisation of violence, a lack of consequences for the perpetrators, a lack of procedural awareness, cronyism and brotherhoods, and a lack of protection from reprisal for reporting perpetrators. The production of violence in South African universities was also found to be significantly shaped by wider structures that included sexuality, gender, age, socioeconomic status, and race and ethnicity. These structures were found to be prominent in increasing the likelihood of violence being perpetrated. Based on the reported findings, the study moved to recommend that, in order to reduce experiences of violence in South African universities, institutions adopt multidimensional approaches to combatting this scourge.
