This is the complaint of a rejected wife whose husband is away working, or of a widow who has been thrown back on her own meagre resources. The leader, Elena Josio, calls out her own name at the end of the song. Another explanation was that the dead person had not been properly clothed in a shroud for burial. Funeral song with clapping.

  • Description: "Give me a cup (of beer or cidar)." In this district the most popular drink is made from the juice of the cashew apple. In some instances it is distilled, but is more usually drunk when freshly fermented in the months of October and November.The Shikoko is a small wooden goblet specially carved for the cashew season after the shape of a Portuguese wine glass. The name shikoko may come from the diminutive of Koko (a coconut). Drinking song with hand clapping.

Depots for the collection and sale of cotton were set up throughout the district. It was one of the cash crops which helped to raise the local standard of living in Chopi countryside.   • Description: This cider is made from the fruit of the Caju tree, (also spelt Cazhu and Cashew). The fruit consists of an apple, which is fermented for cider, and an external nut, the cashew nut, which is attached to the tip of the apple in a crescent shaped pod. The nut itself is edible but the hard pod in which it is encased is impregnated with virulent oil which must first be expelled by fire or distillation before the nut can be cracked open. It now forms an important part of the local economy. The cashew apples rippen in November and their harvest marks a time of annual indulgence for the Chopi and is frequently mentioned in song.   • Description: Although this and the recording is very thin, it represents three genuine styles of Chopi women's songs and has been included for that reason in spite of the poor tone quality of the recording. Chopi women have a musical life of their own, composing and singing their own songs without the assistance of the menfolk. They have a great variety of songs most of which reflect their own personal thoughts, their troubles and enjoyments, their case for their sons and daughters, and the stresses and strains of their daily lives.
