  • Description: There were 6 rattle players (Ndota we njele) and 28 to 30 dancers. For this dance the combined teams of dancers and musicians of both Regulo Canda and Cabo Mtoti were present. They were not well rehearsed and the performance would have been better with the teams separated. The tone quality of Regulo Canda's xylophones is always distinctive. Orchestral dance with 22 Timbila xylophones - 6 Chilanzane (Treble), 5 Sange (Alto), 5 Doli (Tenor), 3 Debiinda (Bass), 3 Gulu (Double Bass).

  • Description: Lambo Diki Muchinga is the son and grandson of two famous Timbila makers in this district Muchinga, who died about 1945 and his son Ngilishi Muchina who, between them, have made most of the beautiful instruments of these two Migodo of Regulo Canda and Cabo Mtoti. By some strange oversight the fourth movement, the Ngeniso, entry of the dancers, was omitted, the leader going straight on his Mweniso. This error was not noticed until too late. It was caused perhaps by the fact that the dancers had already been dancing before our arrival since early morning and so were, so to speak, already on the dance floor.   • Description: The fine Mzeno (inserted here for comparison) was recorded in the same village just 14 years earlier, and is a useful guide to any change of style during that period. For purposes of this recording, the verses were not repeated as is usual with Mzeno. This Mzeno of Chief Mahikete (Canda) is about the payment of poll tax and the wish of the people to escape payment by running along to Mnyokowela in the Panda district, as they did in the old days when fighting against Shangaans.   • Description: A group of about 40 young women and girls joined the Ngodo for this movement, standing behind the dancers in order to take part in the singing. They knew all the words of the lyric by heart even the smallest of them and sang lustily with harsh voices. This development (if it is such) was never seen by me in any Mzeno in the 1940's. The result is no improvement upon the men's voices alone as a song, but was enjoyed by the whole village.
