- Description: Electricity is one of the most stolen commodities in the world. Electricity theft can be defined as the criminal act of stealing electrical power. Several types of electricity theft exist, including illegal connections and bypassing and tampering with energy meters. The negative financial impacts, due to lost revenue, of electricity theft are far reaching and affect both developing and developed countries. . Here in South Africa, Eskom loses over R2 Billion annually due to electricity theft. Data mining and nonparametric statistical methods have been used to detect fraudulent usage of electricity by assessing abnormalities and abrupt changes in kilowatt hour (kWh) consumption patterns. Identifying effective measures to detect fraudulent electricity usage is an active area of research in the electrical domain. In this study, Support Vector Machines (SVM), Naïve Bayes (NB) and k-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) algorithms were used to design and propose an electricity fraud detection model. Using the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality as a case study, three classifiers were built with SVM, NB and KNN algorithms. The performance of these classifiers were evaluated and compared.

A unique view to manufacturing process control in the generation of energy from a PV system is identified. This link between PV energy generation and process control is lacking in the literature and exploited in this study. Variance component models are used to model power output and energy yield estimates of the proposed PV system. The variance components are simulated using Bayesian simulation techniques. Bayesian tolerance intervals are derived from the variance components and are used to determine what percentage of future power output and energy yield values fall within an interval with a certain probability. The results from the estimated tolerance intervals were informative and provided expected power outputs and energy yields for a given month and specific season. The methods improve on current techniques used to assess the energy output of a system.

- Description: The period preceding and after the enactment of ESTA marks an increase in the difficulties faced by the farm dwellers in South Africa. They are still faced with illegal evictions. Their difficulties are marked with loss of land for food farming, loss of work, income and homes. Nevertheless, the introduction of ESTA in 1997 aimed at protecting and restoring the land rights of farm dwellers working on farms. Despite its existence there are still challenges of illegal evictions. This research focuses on difficulties faced by farm workers after the enactment of ESTA and investigate the process and effects of illegal evictions. The thesis adopts a qualitative research methodology that takes the form of a case study on two farms, Killarney farm and Shellford farm, where farm workers experienced evictions. The findings confirm that the farm workers are subject to illegal evictions. The evictions are due to the conversion of agricultural farms to game farming and also due to labour disputes. Poor living conditions are evident and farm owners conduct tacit evictions by imposing restrictions and threatening the farm workers who wish to stay on the farms. This thesis concludes by presenting suggestions that may restrict or put an end to illegal evictions. ESTA needs to be amended in order to ensure the security of farm workers who live on the farms.

Stem cutting propagation protocol for rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

- Description: Rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), is a high value essential oil plant that is used in the perfumery, cosmetic, aromatherapy and food flavouring industries. The increasing demand for this plant, due to its economic importance necessitates the development of an efficient propagation protocol for quality seedling and its maximum production. The present study therefore, sought to develop effective stem cutting propagation protocol which could facilitate multiplication of rose-scented geranium stem cuttings. Three separate experiments were undertaken to determine factors influencing effective propagation of rose-scented geranium. These factors were: rooting media, rooting hormone, cutting length and wound healing period on rooting and development of rose-scented geranium stem cuttings. The cuttings were assessed based on root number, length and fresh mass, plant height, leaf number, and stem circumference. In terms of root measurements, the growing media were washed out from the root system of plantlets, their roots were separated from stem before data was recorded which comprised of root number, length and root fresh mass. Root holding ability (RHA) on rooting medium was determined by visual observation and rated on a 1-5 scale where 1 = very loose, not acceptable; 2 = loose, not acceptable; 3 = medium, marginally acceptable; 4 = tight, acceptable; 5 = very tight, acceptable. The experiments were carried out at Essential Amatole Nursery, at the University of Fort Hare Research Farm, Alice Campus (located at 320 47ʹ3ʺS, 260 50ʹ43ʺ E, with an altitude of 519 m.a.s.l). All the experiments were carried out under mist conditions on bottom-heated beds in a greenhouse (with polycarbonate roofing of about 40percent shading effect) for the first three weeks after sticking the cuttings to the growing medium to facilitate root induction in relatively high temperature and relative humidity. Thereafter, the plantlets were grown in a shade house with 70percent light penetration until the termination of the experiment. To optimize the technology for the propagation of this plant the present experiment was designed with the objective to determine the efficient growing medium and proper rooting hormone for successful rooting and development of quality seedlings of rose-scented geranium. The experiment was set up in a complete randomized design (CRD) and was replicated three times with two factors 7×4, seven different growing media i.e. (1) Mixture growing medium which serves as control (pine bark 8 bags + sand 2 bags + lime 4kg + coconut 10 blocks + talborne 6.25 kg + bone meal 2 kg); (2) River sand only; (3) Pine bark; (4) Hygrotex (commercial rooting media); (5) Pine bark + river sand ( at1:1 ratio on volume basis); (6) Pine bark + hygrotex (at 1:1, ratio on volume basis), and; (7) Pine bark + river sand + hygrotex ( at 1:1:1 ratio on volume basis) and four different IBA hormone levels (auxins, types of IBA) applied as treatment were (1) Dynaroot (1 – 1g/kg), (2) Dynaroot (2- 3g/kg), (3) Dynaroot (3-8g/kg) and (4) Control (untreated with hormone). Hygrotex was identified as the best growth media for quicker regeneration giving the highest root number, length and fresh mass. While, hygrotex + pine bark (v/v 1:1) was efficient in producing more leaves, stem circumference and other aerial parameters. Dynaroot 3 was identified as the best rooting enhancer with maximum root number, length, fresh weight and plant height. Both Dynaroot 3 and Dynaroot 2 did not have major differences on giving highest leaf number. Control (untreated with hormone) was consistent in giving the greatest stem circumference than any other treatment. To maximize stem circumference, a combination of control (untreated with hormone) and hygrotex + pine bark (v/v 1:1) was identified as the best treatment. Based on the investigation for maximum production and quality seedlings of rose-scented geranium, hygrotex and Dynaroot 3 were identified as the best combination for successful rooting. The ideal cutting stem length, rooting hormone and growing medium for quality seedlings of rose-scented geranium were also investigated. The experimental lay out was in randomized complete design (RCD) with a 4 × 4 × 2 factorial treatment combination. Treatments used were, four different cutting lengths viz. 10, 12, 14 and 16 cm long; four different concentrations of IBA rooting hormone (Dynaroot 1, 2, 3 (powder form) and distilled water (control) and two types of growing medium (hygrotex and hygrotex + pine bark v/v 1:1) were used. Stem cuttings of 14 and 16 cm length gave the highest root number of 34, 38 and 35.13, and root length of 3.40 and 3.51cm respectively, with no significance. Cutting length of 10 cm favoured stem circumference (3.1 cm) as compared to other treatments. Whereas, cuttings treated with Dynaroot 3 showed a better root number (33.46 roots), root length (3.54 cm), root fresh mass (0.59 mg), leaf number of (11.08) as well as highest root holding ability (5). However, they showed no significance difference with Dynaroot 2 treated cuttings. In addition, cuttings treated with Control favoured shoot number (3.79) and stem circumference (3.05). Visually, hygrotex was observed to be better substrate though it was not significantly different from hygrotex + pine bark (1:1 v/v) on propagation of rose-scented geranium stem cuttings. Therefore, it is recommended that rose-scented geranium should be propagated through the combination of 14 cm cuttings length and treated with Dynaroot 2 IBA rooting hormone. Both hygrotex and hygrotex + pine bark (1:1 v/v) are the best growing media for root formation and growth of rose-scented geranium, though hygrotex alone is more economical. Wound healing period (WHP) of stem cutting was evaluated using 4 × 4 factorial, cuttings were separated into four groups during the healing duration (intervals of 24 hrs: days 0, 1, 2 and 3). These four groups were further subdivided into four subgroups of rooting hormone viz. Dynaroot 1, 2, 3 of indole-3-butyric acid and control (water). Experiment was laid out in a randomised complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. The results obtained from the study revealed that rose-scented geranium rooted easily when planted on Day 2 of the wound healing period such that root holding ability was at its highest. While, Day 0 cuttings showed good response for stem circumference and shoot number. The study recommends that rose-scented geranium be propagated using cuttings that have enough time to heal the wound that is, Day 2 cuttings. Dynaroot 3 (IBA hormone concentration) showed good response to rooting and other arial parameters except for stem circumference which was favoured by application of control. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that propagation of rose-scented geranium requires a wound healing period of about three days in room temperature and application of IBA hormone before sucking cuttings in growing medium. Instead, of Dynaroot 3 or 2, Dynaroot 1 can also be used because, it is less economical and they all have a similar effect on cuttings that have been healing for three days.

First, we consider the Black Scholes model, which is a classic example of a complete market model and finally focus on Lévy driven models. Jumps may render the market incomplete and are induced in a model by inclusion of a Poisson process. Lévy driven models are more realistic in modelling of asset price dynamics than the Black Scholes model. Martingales are central in pricing, especially of derivatives and we give them the desired attention in the context of pricing. There are an increasing number of important pricing models where analytical solutions are not available hence computational methods come in handy, see Broadie and Glasserman (1997). It is also important to note that computational methods are also applicable to models with analytical solutions. We computationally value selected stochastic financial models using C++. Computational methods are also used to value or price complex financial instruments such as path dependent derivatives. This pricing procedure is applied in the computational valuation of a stochastic (revenue based) loan contract. Derivatives with simple pay of functions and models with analytical solutions are considered for illustrative purposes. The Black-Scholes P.D.E is complex to solve analytically and finite difference methods are widely used. Explicit finite difference scheme is considered in this thesis for computational valuation of derivatives that are modelled by the Black-Scholes P.D.E. Stochastic modelling of asset prices is important for the valuation of derivatives: Gaussian, exponential and gamma variates are simulated for the valuation purposes.

The variables controlled during this process included the objective optimization function, safety factor, target design volume, split-draw constraint, and degrees of cyclic symmetry. The optimum geometry was determined by means of evaluating specific stiffness and potential towards being manufactured as a composite component. Three composite wheel FEA base models, with uni-directional laminae stacked at different fibre orientation intervals, were created according to this geometry and lightened by means of composite free size optimization. Composite sizing and shuffling optimizations were then utilized to further enhance the mass and strain characteristics of the lightest of these three solutions Two composite wheels were manufactured according to the wheel geometry, lamina shapes, and stacking sequences determined by means of structural topology and composites ptimizations. The physical mass and strain behaviour of these wheels were measured and compared to those corresponding to the optimized FEA model, as well as the commercially available wheel. - Description: Problem: In South Africa, women have not always had opportunities in society or the workplace due to historical discriminatory political and socio-economic policies and practices, including apartheid (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, 2011). Gender disparity at the top echelons of organisations is still prevalent, and the South African business landscape is not different despite progressive legislation promulgated in the late 90s when the democratic government took over. Aim of the study: The aim was to identify challenges faced by women when attempting to advance into executive positions and strategies that could assist them in this respect. Method: A literature study was conducted to establish what work had already been done in the field of gender studies and advancement of women in the corporate world. For the empirical study an interpretivist paradigm with a qualitative research approach was adopted. Interviews were conducted with ten women who were members of the Port Elizabeth branch of the Businesswomen's Association of South Africa (BWASA) and who were categorised as hopeful, emerging or already in executive positions. They were asked about the challenges they were facing or had experienced and the strategies that assisted or could assist them in advancing to an executive position. They were also asked to provide critical incidents with the view of enriching the data and gaining a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. Results: Gender-insensitive organisational policies, an unsupportive organisational culture and unknown barriers in selection emerged as key challenges experienced by the participants. Facilitative strategies that emerged included a supportive corporate culture, family support, an enabling supervisor and affiliation to professional bodies. Conclusion: Whilst a large pool of work has been done on the advancement of women, gender equality in corporate South Africa remained a challenge. This challenge should be addressed from a corporate, personal and professional perspective. Recommendations: An integrated organisational approach to this phenomenon is required which should include appropriate company policies, a supportive organisational culture and enabling supervisors. In addition, women should garner the support that their families provide and they could greatly benefit from affiliating to professional bodies.

The key findings of the research found that the participant’s perception was that black women were at the bottom, that black women were displaying behaviours that were inhibiting their progress to senior positions. The study also found that black women struggled to advance to senior positions due to different challenges that they encountered. The study is finalised by the participants providing recommendations in terms of how the representation of black women could be improved.

I became aware of the challenges that significant others of persons with dementia face when caring for persons with dementia, when I was working as a registered nurse in a psychiatric hospital. As a junior registered nurse I found it challenging at times to manage persons with dementia due to the behavioural problems that they exhibited. It occurred to me at the time that significant others who became caregivers of persons with dementia must struggle with their role as caregivers, not having the necessary knowledge and skills to care for them. Literature confirms my observation that significant others need assistance when they experience the transition from being a significant other to being a caregiver of a person with dementia. Significant others often have to deal with many additional role transitions once they become caregivers. - Description: Universities admit students from diverse backgrounds and have an obligation to accommodate all the students in various educational programmes to ensure that they acquire relevant skills and knowledge. The provision of Textile, Clothing and Design programmes to students with diverse academic backgrounds in universities of technology in Zimbabwe has led to various concerns raised by the textile and clothing stakeholders. The concerns include poor performance of students, high student failure rate, high student drop out, late completion of programmes by students, and other problems emanating from curriculum implementation approaches used by the lecturers. This study therefore, sought to find out how students with diverse academic backgrounds are catered for in the provision of TCD programmes in the two sampled universities of technology in Zimbabwe, with a view to assist the students and to enhance the quality of TCD provision. The study adopted a post-positivism paradigm and used a mixed method research approach that integrated concurrent qualitative and quantitative procedures in data collection, analysis and interpretation. A questionnaire, interviews and document analysis were used to collect data from respondents. Purposive sampling procedure was used to select 36 TCD lecturers, 2 universities’ quality assurance directors, 2 TCD faculty deans of studies, and 2 department chairpersons. Collected data were analyzed using statistical and non-statistical procedures. The study revealed that catering for students with diverse academic backgrounds was practiced in the two universities despite the absence of a curriculum implementation policy to guide the provision of TCD programmes to students with diverse academic backgrounds at university level. It emerged that catering for students with diverse academic backgrounds in implementing TCD curricular at the two sampled universities was faced with various challenges that include lack of lecturer training with regard to catering for students from diverse academic backgrounds and inadequate lecturer training in depth TCD subject content knowledge and ICT teaching technology packages. The study also revealed that there is not enough university and stakeholder participation with regards to supporting and monitoring curriculum implementation process to cater for students with diverse academic backgrounds. Although there were challenges encountered in catering for students with diverse academic backgrounds, the study reveals that there are pockets of good practice in some curriculum implementation strategies implemented by the two institutions such as use of student centered teaching and instructional approaches, university support and lecturer commitment to assist the students. The study findings conclude that although catering for TCD students with diverse academic backgrounds was being practiced in the two universities of technology, there are very critical issues observed over the programmes implementation process that include absence of curriculum implementation policy, lack of training of lecturers and inadequate participative TCD stakeholder involvement. Based on the study findings and reviewed literature, the researcher suggests an alternative curriculum implementation framework for catering for students with diverse academic backgrounds that may help improve effectiveness of university programmes implementation.

The provision of Textile, Clothing and Design programmes to students with diverse academic backgrounds in universities of technology in Zimbabwe has led to various concerns raised by the textile and clothing stakeholders. The concerns include poor performance of students, high student failure rate, high student drop out, late completion of programmes by students, and other problems emanating from curriculum implementation approaches used by the lecturers. This study therefore, sought to find out how students with diverse academic backgrounds are catered for in the provision of TCD programmes in the two sampled universities of technology in Zimbabwe, with a view to assist the students and to enhance the quality of TCD provision. The study adopted a post-positivism paradigm and used a mixed method research approach that integrated concurrent qualitative and quantitative procedures in data collection, analysis and interpretation. A questionnaire, interviews and document analysis were used to collect data from respondents. Purposive sampling procedure was used to select 36 TCD lecturers, 2 universities’ quality assurance directors, 2 TCD faculty deans of studies, and 2 department chairpersons. Collected data were analyzed using statistical and non-statistical procedures. The study revealed that catering for students with diverse academic backgrounds was practiced in the two universities despite the absence of a curriculum implementation policy to guide the provision of TCD programmes to students with diverse academic backgrounds at university level. The authors work across all three institutional types found in higher education in South Africa: traditional universities, comprehensive universities and universities of technology. Through this rich array of contributions, supervision is presented never as a ‘best practice’ to be generically implemented but rather as a nuanced pedagogy to be nurtured through critical reflection. The chapters mix theoretical considerations of the postgraduate process and personal narratives of supervision practice. Most of the authors can be described as emerging supervisors, with a few contributions from more experienced supervisors, but all have in common a deep desire to forge inclusive environments that foster meaningful postgraduate research and nurture a new generation of scholars. Palliative measures used to fight HIV involve the use various types of inhibitors, including the use of HIV protease inhibitors. Representatives from this class of inhibitors are gradually losing their efficacy due to development of resistance mutations from HIV-1. In this study, compounds from the South African Natural Compound Database (SANCDB) were screened against HIV-1 protease models generated from protease protein sequences belonging to 11 South African HIV patients before and after treatment with Lopinavir. The effect of Lopinavir on the alteration of drug-binding affinity before and after treatment is investigated by molecular docking of the protease against other FDA-approved drugs and detection of mutation types using the HIVdb tool. A network representation of hydrogen bonding between docked ligands and their receptor proteases has been developed and a profiling method of visualizing receptor-ligand docking energies at the local level is presented. Four potential HIV-1 protease inhibitors were identified from the list of 599 natural compounds on the basis of receptor conformation and binding free energy. Ligand stabilities were monitored by 20ns molecular dynamics runs using the GROMACS software.

The purity was further confirmed with the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The energy band gap of the materials was extrapolated from the Kubelka-Munk relation and it ranges between 1.8 and 2.3 eV. The Photoluminescence of the 3 samples shows a broad emission spectrum centered at about 422 nm when excited by a 336 nm lamp. The emission peaks intensities increased with an increase in the annealing temperature, accept for the 576 nm peak, which was quenched as the temperature increased from 300 °C to 600 °C. The thermoluminescence glow curves were carried out at different heating rates and the samples were exposed to different beta particle doses (82–1315 Gy). The activation energy of the trapped electrons was determined.
