The importance of intrapreneurship should not be taken lightly if organisations are to remain competitive. Human capital is considered a key resource in the provision of innovation which results in availing products and services to customers so as to remain relevant and make profits or achieve the different strategic objectives of organisations. This research constituted the collection and quantitative analysis of two data sets. The first data set was gathered through a structured questionnaire that assessed 13 constructs, which measured the intrapreneurial climate at SAICA. The second data set focused on assessing and measuring 20 intrapreneurial characteristics and was generated through self-completed questionnaires. The questionnaires were sent to 112 employees through an online tool and a total of 57 questionnaires were completed and analysed. The findings indicate that intrapreneurship at SAICA is poorly and inadequately performed. There is a general perception that there is no tolerance for risk, mistakes and failure and that the rewards and reinforcement are poorly implemented. The relationship between superiors and staff is skewed thus creating a culture of fear to make mistakes or to speak openly. The following recommendations were suggested: Encourage superiors to engage with staff and support intrapreneurship through appropriate reward systems and reinforcement; encourage superiors to promote innovation by increasing tolerance to mistakes and risk. This could also be achieved by allowing staff to use their abilities to contribute to decision making; Increase awareness about intrapreneurship among staff in order to motivate individuals; Use existing structures such as the employment equity committees, departmental steward meetings as well as employee forums to improve trust between superiors and staff.

Invasion status and potential impacts of bluegill Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque, 1819 in the Kariega River, Eastern Cape, South Africa

All of the major drainages of South Africa are invaded by non-native fishes, yet little information is available on their impact. This thesis focusses on providing a better understanding of the potential impacts of bluegill Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque, 1819, a species introduced into South Africa from the USA in 1938. The study assesses the distribution, establishment success and feeding ecology of L. macrochirus in an invaded South African River system in order to better understand and document its potential impacts. Specifically; this thesis (1) assesses the distribution and relative abundance of L. macrochirus in the Kariega System of the Eastern Cape, (2) determines the diet of the species in one of the major impoundments of the system, and (3) uses an experimental comparative functional response approach to assess whether this species has heightened predatory capabilities when compared with fishes with which it cooccurs. Ninety-six sites in the Kariega River system were sampled from the headwaters down to the estuary. Small native fish species (Enteromius anoplus and Enteromius pallidus) occurred mostly in the upper reaches, while in the middle and lower reaches, the centrarchid alien largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and bluegill L. mocrochirus dominated. There was overlap between the centrarchids and introduced banded tilapia Tilapia sparrmanii and southern mouthbrooder Pseudocrenilabrus philander, but never with small-bodied native species. The stomach contents of L. macrochirus were examined during winter and summer and prey were identified to family level. Crustaceans and insects were an important component in their diet, but in summer fish eggs were common. Comparisons of bluegill diet with published literature indicated that there was potential for competition with largemouth bass, banded tilapia and southern mouthbrooder. Feeding experiments were conducted to compare the functional responses of these four species using a common prey item. Banded tilapia had significantly lower attack rates than the other species with no significant difference observed in other species. Bluegill has a similar impact to that of banded tilapia and southern mouthbrooder, but lower than that of largemouth bass. Results of the present study highlight that L. macrochirus introduced into dams will likely result in both upstream and downstream invasion of river systems. It is likely that this species does not, however, have as much of a predatory impact as M. salmoides in that its predatory capacity is relatively reduced and more comparable to South African native cichlids. These results are discussed within the context of invasion success/failure in other regions of southern Africa.

Invasive alien plants threaten biodiversity and compromise the ecosystem's ability to provide goods and services for rural communities, thereby negatively affecting livelihood strategies. Information on IAPs is lacking in most African countries, thus, the livelihood effects of Invasive Alien Plants (IAPs) are not clearly understood. In Zimbabwe, Cylindropuntia fulgida var. fulgida (Cff) has invaded Gwanda district in the Matabeleland south province compromising local household capital assets that contribute to livelihood strategies and altering the ecosystem. This study exposed the rural worldview of the environment, the effect that Cff has on local livelihood strategies and the effectiveness environmental management institutions in rural Gwanda district. The study followed a post positivist paradigm. The impacts of IAPs on rural communities in Zimbabwe were analysed by looking at the livelihood stresses that arise because of Cff. The research used multi-stage sampling to select a representative sample of respondents. Primary data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires, group discussion and key informant guides. Furthermore, document analysis was conducted to collect secondary data. The data analysis process used Computer packages Microsoft Excel, SPSS and NVIVO. Results showed that livelihood benefits that species in the natural environment provide strongly influence environmental perceptions of rural African communities. Additionally, the study showed that Cff compromises the local ecosystem and reduces its ability to support the dominant livelihoods in the study area. The long-term result of such a situation in the absence of control is increased poverty and the failure to realise sustainable development. However, results indicated that IAPs could also improve the poverty situation of a community before they have reached the threshold points. It is therefore imperative to know the threshold points of an invasive plant in order to ascertain the efficient point to intervene. The study also showed that benefits of invasive plants accrue to different members of a society at different times (private/public). This knowledge allows the adoption of efficient and effective control strategies.

The current climatic variability in the country has caused decline in food production as result of increased dry spells, frequency of droughts and erratic rainfall. These climatic events are expected to have a significant impact on the livelihoods of the smallholder farmers. In combatting the harmful effects of climate change, smallholder farmers in Lesotho have employed various adaptation strategies based on their local knowledge and limited means. While these strategies may not be optimal they obviously constitute the basis for potentially effective improved technologies which can be developed and communicated through an efficient extension system, hence the need to precisely identify them and understand the factors that affect their choice. The main objective of this study was therefore, to identify the adaptation strategies and investigate the factors influencing smallholder farmers’ choice of those adaptation strategies. The study made use of multi-stage stratified sampling technique to select 160 respondents across four agro-ecological zones (lowlands, highlands, foothills and Senqu River Valley) in Leribe and Mohales’Hoek districts of Lesotho. Primary data for the study were collected using semi - structured questionnaire assisted with interview schedules administered on the respondents. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and the multinomial logistics regression model. The results show that there are more males than females, majority of the respondents’ attained primary education, and older people dominate the smallholder farming system. The adaptation strategies used in MNL model were soil and water management, crop management and livestock management. The results further revealed that soil and water management strategies were the most adopted climate change strategies amongst smallholder farmers. It is understood that marital status, age and gender, income, land tenure, crop grown, extension services, and agro-ecological zones are the determinant factors influencing the choice of the adaptation strategies. This study concludes by recommending that smallholder farmers should be sensitised about climate change and both government and non-government organisations working on climate change related issues should direct their attention to rural communities to ensure effective response to climate change.

- Description: South African riparian zones have been heavily degraded through anthropogenic activities such as dam construction and extraction of water for irrigation, which has resulted in a loss of ecosystem services and functioning. This study aimed to enhance our understanding of the tall-statured grasses A. donax, P. australis and P. mauritianus to better manage them in riparian areas. For A. donax, biological control is seen as the most viable option to control stands in the long-term. However, before such a programme is put in place, it is important to first collect baseline data that can be used to guide the direction of the biological control project in South Africa. For the Phragmites spp., despite being a dominant vegetative type in riparian areas, very little is known about their status in South Africa. Furthermore, there have been increasing reports of both Phragmites species having an expansion of their range and abundance. In North America, there has been a similar trend of reed expansion and through molecular work it was determined that a cryptic invasion has occurred with the introduction of an invasive non-native haplotype from Europe. It is therefore unknown if Phragmites spp. populations are expanding due to anthropogenic activities or due to a cryptic invasion. To address these shortfalls in knowledge the study investigated the tall-statured grasses in two parts; firstly, molecular techniques are used to explore the plant origin and genetic diversity of A. donax, P. australis and P. mauritianus and secondly using the Enemy Release Hypothesis as a framework, herbivore assemblages for each reed was determined across their distribution in South Africa. Molecular-techniques determined that both P. australis and P. mauritianus had only one haplotype - known as haplotype K and haplotype V respectively, across their distribution. For P. australis, haplotype K shares a close connection with populations from a Mediterranean lineage and this was further confirmed with a shared grass-waxy band. The direction and timing of genetic exchange between the two regions could not be ascertained and thus still remains unknown. Microsatellite analysis determined that both Phragmites spp. had a high genetic diversity compared to worldwide lineages. With no evidence of any cryptic invasions of haplotypes from other regions, both Phragmites spp. populations are likely to be native to South Africa. For A. donax all populations across South Africa were determined to be haplotype M1; a cosmopolitan haplotype that has an ancient native range in Afghanistan and Pakistan (Indus Valley). Populations were found to have no genetic diversity and thus can be considered one clone. A pre-introductory survey determined a list of herbivores associated with each tall- statured grass. For A. donax, a total of seven herbivores were found. Of these, one herbivore, a galling wasp, Tetramesa romana Walker (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) was found to be highly abundant and widely distributed in South Africa. Tetramesa romana is already a biological control agent in North America and thus is likely exerting some pressure on A. donax populations in South Africa. For both Phragmites spp. a total of ten herbivores were found, although having higher species richness compared to A. donax, when compared to other regions, these native species have a relatively low species richness. Providing baseline data on plant origin, genetic diversity and herbivory on A. donax, P. australis and P. mauritianus has provided important information on managing these species in riparian ecosystems in South Africa. For the Phragmites spp. with no evidence of any cryptic invasions, it is recommended that reed stands continue to be managed as native species. Phragmites spp. are important dominant vegetative species and thus should be protected; however, if reed stands become expansive, control methods can be put in place to focus on managing spread and abundance. For A. donax, this study was able to provide pivotal information in guiding the biological control programme. By determining the ancient lineage of South African populations, research can be focused in this area to find potential biological control agents. Lastly, the pre-introductory survey determined that a biological control agent, T. romana was already established with an unknown introduction and also highlighted potential plant parts that should be targeted. In particular, no rhizome feeding herbivores were found in South Africa and therefore this highlights an important niche that should be explored in biological control agents.

Thirdly, to look at what enables or constrains grade 10 Physical Science teachers in under-resourced schools when dealing with electromagnetism, from using easily accessible materials. A qualitative method approach was adopted, underpinned by an interpretive paradigm but using some quantitative methods as well. Within the interpretive paradigm a case study approach was used. The study was carried out in Swakopmund and Gobabis education circuits of the Erongo and Omaheke Regions respectively. Data were collected using questionnaires, lesson observations and stimulated-recall interviews. The data obtained were validated in two ways, firstly, by triangulation from different data gathering techniques, and secondly, validation was done by member checking of the transcripts. To make meaning from the data generated, Vygotsky’s (1978) socio-cultural theory was used as a lens to analyse the data. The quantitative data generated were presented in figures, tables; whereas the qualitative data were coded inductively into descriptive texts to make meaning. It was found that teachers’s perceptions and experiences are that the topic of electromagnetism is quite challenging. Teachers reported that their learners find it difficult to comprehend phenomena associated with electromagnetism, thus making it difficult for their learners to grasp concepts associated with it. Lack of resources to do practical activities in the topic of electromagnetism was found to be a major contributing factor to teaching and learning of this topic. The use of easily accessible materials among teachers was found to be very limited. Easily accessible locally sourced materials were found to have the potential to enable grade 10 Physical Science teachers to help learners to make sense of concepts of electromagnetism in under-resourced schools. In light of the above findings, the study recommends that science teachers should make use of easily accessible materials which can minimise their dependence on standard laboratory equipment which is unaffordable anyway by most schools.

For the purpose of this study, purposive (non-probability) or judgemental sampling was used. The qualitative data was analysed thematically using coding and categorising data into themes. The findings of this study revealed that there is a lack of public participation by the local communities in development projects. Also, ward committees do not have a platform to participate at the representative forums and during the IDP/budget hearings. In this regard, the study made recommendations on the participation strategies in order to tackle the challenges faced in the provision of low-income housing.

The values of sustainability are commonly associated with terms such as sharing, collaboration, austerity, and collective thinking. Luxury, however, is associated with excess, self-indulgence, delight and decadence (Kapferer & Bastien, 2012:360). Further paradoxes exist where the apparel of the luxury consumer is often manufactured by labourers in low wage-paying producing countries. High wastage is evident in the seasonality of the fashion industry. However, work opportunities are created by the fickleness of the fashion industry and the constant need to own the most current designs (Black, 2012:8). Owing to the high visibility of luxury fashion and the contractions between one -- on the one hand -- supplying income to families by way of employment and -- on the other hand -- not complying to sustainable international human resource practices, fashion brands are the focus of many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that use the mass media to expose any social wrongdoing in the industry. Luxury fashion brands are constantly in the spotlight, as highlighted in articles posted by the Clean Clothes campaign, a custodian for employees in the global garment industries; Greenpeace; and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). An example of such practices was when Greenpeace reported in 2009 that shoe brands such as Timberland and Clarks were manufactured from leather sourced from the hides of cattle in illegally deforested areas in Brazil. This provided negative publicity for these luxury shoe brands as well as for the Brazilian government that was financing this project (Vurro, Russo & Perrini, 2009:609). The luxury fashion brand industry, as well as the consumers of luxury fashion labels, are accused -- often only for the sake of sensationalism -- of living in the lap of luxury whilst maintaining a supply chain that is riddled with unsustainable practices. The social structure and hierarchy of patrons within a community have, since the Middle Ages, been signalled by the clothes they wore. Social class was a birthright. Today, sporting luxury brands continues to serve as status symbols, but unlike mediaeval times, it is not limited to people with a high social standing at birth as one can work for status, and purchase the items because one deserves them. (Han, Nunes, & Drèze, 2010:15). In 2009, during the International Herald Tribune (IHT) Suzy Menkes, the fashion editor at The Herald, called for “luxury”’ and “fashion” to be separated. Luxury prides itself in its handcrafted garments manufactured by respected tradesmen in the industry. The outcome is that the manufactured goods are made to last a lifetime (Gibson, 2012:23).

An interpretive qualitative case study was used in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the teachers’ pedagogic approaches and how it affects their learners’ argumentative essay writing. The theoretical framework was informed by the Genre theorist, Gibbons (2002), who focuses on the Curriculum Cycle and Hyland’s (1990) model. Two Grade 11 English teachers were purposefully and conveniently sampled. One of the teachers is from a government school while the other from a private school. Data were collected from interviews, videoed writing lessons (3 per teacher), and learners’ written essays. Data analysis revealed that both teachers have a sound understanding about argumentative writing, but their classroom practices did not sufficiently assist the learners to grasp the argumentative writing conventions. Their classroom practices were not adaptive enough when giving feedback to the learners, and they did not adhere to the four steps of Gibbons’ (2002) Curriculum Cycle. Also, the process to writing (brainstorming, drafting, and revising) was also not incorporated into their teaching. These meant that the Namibian curriculum specifications are not met which deprives the learners of the needed practice scaffolding and explicit teaching into competent independent writers. A recommendation of this study is that there is a need for the teachers to be exposed to a mixed process/genre approach as advocated by the Namibian curriculum.

An interpretive qualitative case study was used in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the teachers’ pedagogic approaches and how it affects their learners’ argumentative essay writing. The theoretical framework was informed by the Genre theorist, Gibbons (2002), who focuses on the Curriculum Cycle and Hyland’s (1990) model. Two Grade 11 English teachers were purposefully and conveniently sampled. One of the teachers is from a government school while the other from a private school. Data were collected from interviews, videoed writing lessons (3 per teacher), and learners’ written essays. Data analysis revealed that both teachers have a sound understanding about argumentative writing, but their classroom practices did not sufficiently assist the learners to grasp the argumentative writing conventions. Their classroom practices were not adaptive enough when giving feedback to the learners, and they did not adhere to the four steps of Gibbons’ (2002) Curriculum Cycle. Also, the process to writing (brainstorming, drafting, and revising) was also not incorporated into their teaching. These meant that the Namibian curriculum specifications are not met which deprives the learners of the needed practice scaffolding and explicit teaching into competent independent writers. A recommendation of this study is that there is a need for the teachers to be exposed to a mixed process/genre approach as advocated by the Namibian curriculum.

Raw wool fibers contain fat, suint (sheep sweat salts), plant material and minerals. Wool can lose up to 30% of its original weight during this process. The Lesotho government feels that there is a need to develop a wool scouring plant in Lesotho because Lesotho does not benefit from the South African wool scouring processes and anything that happens post that process. Given that no viability studies had been conducted in Lesotho to motivate the government’s interest in developing a wool scouring plant, this study was conducted with the aim to investigate the benefits of developing a wool scouring plant in Lesotho. The research design employed in this study was a mixed method, which is a combination of positivism (quantitative) and interpretivism (qualitative) data collection and analysis in parallel form. In terms of the qualitative component of the study, structured interviews were conducted, governed by in-depth interview guidelines developed by the researcher. A questionnaire was used for the qualitative component of the study. Among some of its findings and recommendations the study recommends that there is insufficient wool produced in Lesotho to support a local wool scouring plant, the government of Lesotho should rather focus their effort on the improvement of the wool production value chain to assist farmers. The study finds no grounds for the justification of the development of a local scouring plant in Lesotho and recommends that for such propositions to be made publicly, at least proper groundwork should be undertaken to investigate the technical feasibility of developing the scouring plant.

- Description: The Helicoverpa armigera stunt virus (HaSV), belonging to the Family Alphatetraviridae (Genus: Omegatetravirus), is a non-enveloped insect virus encapsidating a bi-partite, positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. RNA1 encodes the replicase, as well as three small open reading frames (ORFs) arranged in tandem, and overlapping with the 3’ end of the replicase ORF. These ORFs, designated p11, p15 and p8, encode putative proteins of unknown function. The p11 and p15 ORFs are conserved in the genome of the related Omegatetravirus, Dendrolimus punctatus tetravirus. In HaSV, the stop codon of p11 is followed immediately by the start of p15, whereas the stop of p15 and start of p8 are separated by a glycine intercodon. Furthermore, only p11 is known to have a recognizable Kozak sequence. The aim of this study was to determine the expression and function of these three small proteins in the HaSV infectious lifecycle. The authenticity of the viral cDNA sequence, encoding the three small ORFs, was validated by sequencing multiple cDNA clones of the relevant region in viral RNA (vRNA), purified from infectious HaSV particles. The sequence of all three ORFs was conserved in seven cDNA clones, while point mutations were observed in each of two remaining cDNA clones, suggesting that the ORFs were conserved in infectious virus. Polyclonal antisera were raised against a p11 peptide, and a recombinant p15-p8 fusion protein (p23) expressed and purified from Escherichia coli. The affinity of the anti-p23 antiserum was confirmed by western blot analysis, while that of the anti-p11 antiserum was confirmed using immunofluorescence microscopy, as attempted expression of recombinant p11 in E. coli appeared to be toxic. The antisera were used to detect expression of the small proteins in HaSV-infected H. armigera larvae by western blot analysis. A band migrating at approximately 34 kDa was detected by both antisera in infected larvae, absent in uninfected larvae, suggesting the expression of a p11-p15-p8 polyprotein. Protein bands of 11 kDa and 8 kDa were also detected by the anti-p11 and anti-p23 antisera, respectively. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that the polyprotein would be produced by a novel type of stop codon read-through, however the mechanism required for individual expression could not be definitively determined. The mechanism by which these ORFs are translated was further investigated by expressing p11-p15, tagged with FLAG and enhanced green flourescent protein (EGFP) at its amino- and carboxyl-termini respectively (FLAG-p11-p15-EGFP), in Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cells detected by flourescence microscopy. Punctate structures were observed throughout the cytoplasm that were also detected with antiFLAG, anti-p11 and anti-p23 antisera, complementing results obtained in previous studies. Since p15 does not exhibit a strong recognizable Kozak like p11, the dependency of p15 expression on that of p11 was investigated by mutating this construct such that p15 occurred in a +1 frame to p11. - Description: Visual literacy is one of the critical aspects that English First Additional Language teachers and learners battle with. The focus of this investigation was on developing learners’ performance in visual literacy and helping teachers improve teaching practice. This thesis reports on efforts in developing critical visual literacy in two Grade 9 classrooms; a rural and a township school in the King William’s Town District in the Eastern Cape. The research spread over four week, spending two weeks at each school as an ethnographic researcher, being assimilated to the culture of the each school. In understanding the kind of visual knowledge that these learners brought from home between the rural-urban divide, the learners displayed an interest in visual literacy, used the necessary language and appeared to design certain visual materials around the school. Data was collected in the form of questionnaires that learners filled, informal Facebook conversation screenshots, as well as the researcher’s field notes. Learner focus group discussions were conducted, tape recorded and transcribed. Two lessons each were observed with the two teachers, and these were recorded and transcribed. A camera was used to take shots in the classroom to show the interaction between the teachers and the learners. Also, semi-structured interviews were held with each teacher and these were recorded and transcribed. The data revealed that there were no major differences between rural and urban school learners. However, the research has provided a valuable insight into the mismatch between home visual literacy practices and school visual literacy teaching. The learners’ digital visual literacy practices were far ahead than those of the teachers who are not able to capitalise on these visual skills; the cultural capital that learners bring to school. Learners also displayed a low reading culture but the medium for reading has shifted considerably and learners developed communication skills through digital technology. Teacher agency in the classroom revealed that teachers need to first engage with the cognitive functions of the visual images that they teach by the prevalence of low level questions that they ask. Moreover, there is a place for translanguaging in visual literacy lessons. These indicate important areas for teacher development to promote the emergence of transformative agency.

Investigating the perceptions of the relationship between vocational education and the labour market: a case study of FET college students

- Description: The study sought to investigate the perceptions of TVET students regarding vocational education and its relation to the labour market. It hoped to illuminate connections or disconnections between vocational education and employment. The research emanated from the prevailing view that TVET education by its very nature is work-oriented and therefore those who enroll in TVET colleges are able to find employment. Furthermore, that conceptually the TVET curriculum was and continues to be regarded as skills-based for labour market demands thereby enhancing national competiveness and economic growth. Qualitative questionnaires, which are open-ended in nature, were used to gather facts about students’ beliefs and experiences regarding certain engineering programmes and services offered at TVET colleges. Non-probability sampling was used to select one hundred and thirteen (113) participants who voluntarily completed qualitative questionnaires, which were structured to elicit the required information, and the results reveal divergent views shared by students. There are those who feel very strongly that a TVET qualification, in engineering in particular, leads to employment due to its demand and the fact that the institution generally assists students through the placement unit makes it even easier to find employment. Other students firmly believed that whatever qualifications one attained, the world of work cannot accommodate them, as they do not have work experience. They felt this was unfair because they are unable to find employment without being properly monitored and trained by the very same industry that hopes to employ them in the near future. They argue that the only problem pertaining to unemployment is job scarcity, rather than skills scarcity. The research is framed within the human capital theory. Research findings reveal the fact that there is no link between vocational education and the labour market and as a result employment is not easy. There are personal skills required but they are not available in our educational curriculum, which focuses on educational aspirations. The research further posits five distinct but necessary interventions that students are suggesting in order to increase their lack of experience in the job market.

- Description: The study sought to investigate the perceptions of TVET students regarding vocational education and its relation to the labour market. It hoped to illuminate connections or disconnections between vocational education and employment. The research emanated from the prevailing view that TVET education by its very nature is work-oriented and therefore those who enroll in TVET colleges are able to find employment. Furthermore, that conceptually the TVET curriculum was and continues to be regarded as skills-based for labour market demands thereby enhancing national competiveness and economic growth. Qualitative questionnaires, which are open-ended in nature, were used to gather facts about students’ beliefs and experiences regarding certain engineering programmes and services offered at TVET colleges. Non-probability sampling was used to select one hundred and thirteen (113) participants who voluntarily completed qualitative questionnaires, which were structured to elicit the required information, and the results reveal divergent views shared by students. There are those who feel very strongly that a TVET qualification, in engineering in particular, leads to employment due to its demand and the fact that the institution generally assists students through the placement unit makes it even easier to find employment. Other students firmly believed that whatever qualifications one attained, the world of work cannot accommodate them, as they do not have work experience. They felt this was unfair because they are unable to find employment without being properly monitored and trained by the very same industry that hopes to employ them in the near future. They argue that the only problem pertaining to unemployment is job scarcity, rather than skills scarcity. The research is framed within the human capital theory. Research findings reveal the fact that there is no link between vocational education and the labour market and as a result employment is not easy. There are personal skills required but they are not available in our educational curriculum, which focuses on educational aspirations. The research further posits five distinct but necessary interventions that students are suggesting in order to increase their lack of experience in the job market.

Investigating the use of models to develop Grade 8 learners’ conceptual understanding of and procedural fluency with fractions

- Description: Both my teaching experience and literature of this research study strongly suggested that fractions are difficult to teach and learn across the globe generally, and Namibia in particular. One of the identified contributing factors was teaching fractions by focusing on procedures and not the conceptual understanding. Therefore, this research project developed and implemented an intervention in order to experiment and suggest an alternative teaching approach of fractions using models. The purpose of this research was to: “Investigate the use of models to develop Grade 8 learners’ conceptual understanding of and procedural fluency with fractions”. This investigation had three areas of focus. Firstly, the study investigated the nature of learners’ conceptual understanding of and procedural fluency with fractions before the teaching intervention, by means of administering a pre-test and pre-interview and analysing learners’ responses. Secondly, the study investigated the changes in learners’ conceptual understanding of and procedural fluency with fractions after the teaching intervention, by means of administering a post-test, post-interviews and recall interviews, and analysing learners’ responses. Thirdly, this study investigated the possible influence of the teaching intervention on the changes in learners’ conceptual understanding of and procedural fluency with fractions by analysing the lesson videos and learners’ worksheets, and describe their critical interaction. This study was conducted at a multicultural urban secondary school located in the Oshikoto Region, Namibia. The sample consisted of 12 Grade 8 mathematics learners whose age ranged from 13-16 years old. A purposive sampling method was employed to select both the research site and participants. This research is framed as a case study, and is grounded within the interpretive paradigm and qualitative research. This research revealed that these learners displayed conceptual and procedural difficulties in their engagement with fraction models and fraction symbols, before the teaching intervention. Conceptually, the study found that these learners read fractions using inappropriate names; and learners did not identify the whole unit in the models and therefore identified fractions represented by the fraction models using different forms of inappropriate fraction symbols. Procedurally, the study found that these learners compared and ordered fractions inappropriately using the sizes of the numerators and denominators separately; and learners used the lowest common denominator method inappropriately for adding fractions with different denominators. The research also suggested conceptual and procedural changes in learners’ conceptual understanding of and procedural fluency with fractions and that the intervention seemed to help learners to engage better with fraction models and fraction symbols. Conceptually, the findings suggested that the intervention using area models and number lines, seemed to help these learners to read fractions using appropriate names; to identify the whole unit in the fraction models and to develop a sense of the size of fractions in relation to one whole unit. Procedurally, the learners compared and ordered fractions appropriately using either equal fraction bars, equal number lines, benchmarking or rules for comparing and ordering fractions with the same numerator or denominator; and learners used equal fraction bars to visually represent the lowest common denominator method and to recognise that only equally sized units can be counted together. This research identified four factors as possible influences of the teaching intervention. These factors are namely: identifying both fraction symbols and appropriate fraction names to see fractions as relational numbers; prompting to partition whole units of the fraction models and graphically illustrating fraction symbols to identify the whole unit in the fraction models and to develop a sense of the size of fractions in relation to one whole unit; graphically illustrating fraction symbols using the models to use equal fraction bars and number lines, benchmarking and rules for comparing; and graphically illustrating fraction denominations using equal fraction bars to recognise that only equally sized units can be counted together. This research strongly suggests that the effective use of models has the potential to develop learners’ conceptual understanding of and procedural fluency with fractions in a number of ways.

Investigating the utilization of the secure hash algorithm to generate electromagnetic noise

- Description: This research introduces an electromagnetic (EM) noise generator known as the FRIES noise generator to mitigate and obfuscate Side Channel Analysis (SCA) attacks against a Raspberry Pi. The FRIES noise generator utilizes the implementation of the Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA) from OpenSSL to generate white noise within the EM spectrum. This research further contributes to the body of knowledge by demonstrating that the SHA implementation of libcrypto++ and OpenSSL had different EM signatures. It was further revealed that as a more secure implementation of the SHA was executed additional data lines were used, resulting in increased EM emissions. It was demonstrated that the OpenSSL implementations of the SHA was more optimized as opposed to the libcrypto++ implementation by utilizing less resources and not leaving the device in a bottleneck. The FRIES daemon added noise to the EM leakage which prevents the visual location of the AES-128 cryptographic implementation. Finally, the cross-correlation test demonstrated that the EM features of the AES-128 algorithm was not detected within the FRIES noise.
