He urges everyone to play the Ketuba lyre a fit and manly instrument for the circumcised.   • Description: The singer was a cycle repairer by trade, claimed to belong to the Njeudura age grade (his own age at the time being about 22 years in 1952). He, like other Kikuyu who buy these expensive accordians uses it as a noise maker rather than a melodic or harmonic accompaniment. As with the guitar players they rarely change key. This performance was remarkable for the understanding between the singer and his accompanist on the 'iron'. The song was deafening to observers nearby, but apparently enthralling to the performers. Kikuyu musicians appear to be able to tolerate an intensity of sound far beyond the normal, in fact bordering on the threshold of pain in the ears. For the recording the man with his piece of iron and box had to be placed a considerable distance from the microphone. Mamboko dance with accordian and struck iron (-12.16-).

The trough zithers are like long bowls of wood with the strings stretched along over the hollow of the highest note downwards, the friction of the string caught in slits at either end of the trough is enough to retain the tuning for quite a while before returning is necessary. The structure if the phrasing of the accompaniment can be well observed in this recording. Praise song for chief with Nanga trough zither, 7 notes.

  • Description: The Mkwaju dance is popular, they say, amongst the more African element of this Swahili population which also shows a tendency towards Arabian and sometimes to Indian music. The population of the island is complex and consists of representatives of several East African tribes in addition to Arab, Indian and Shirazi peoples, and their offspring of mixed marriages. The effect in terms of musical performances is equally complex without unanimity, a phenomena found in other communities of mixed tribal and national marriages. The solos in the song are normally accompanied by 'Nkugiya' pas seul, after the Zulu fashion. The words of the song appear to have lost their meaning and the singers could not enlighten us.
