- Description: The current study aimed to investigate the prevalence and seasonal changes of gastro-intestinal parasites GIP of ovine grazed don three different veld types in the communal farming areas of the Eastern Cape Province. A total of 1242 sheep faecal samples were collected monthly between January 2012 and December 2015 to investigate the prevalence and season occurrence of internal parasites. From September to November 2018, a semi-structured questionnaire survey was conducted in three agro-ecological zones, humid Wartburg, semi-humid Allen waters, and arid region Cradock commonages to investigate farmers’ knowledge of the prevalence and occurrence of GIP in sheep. The prevalence of gastro-intestinal parasites was significantly higher in the humid zone roundworms 81 percent and coccidia 37 percent, followed by the semi-humid zone roundworms 75 percent and coccidia 22 percent and the arid zone was the lowest roundworms 71 percent and coccidia 14 percent. Roundworms had significantly higher counts P 0.05 mostly in hot-wet seasons of the year spring and summer and low during dry cold months of the year autumn and winter across all veld types. The humid zone had significantly higher counts P 0.05 in the seasonal occurrence of roundworms and coccidia, followed by humid zone, and very low counts were encountered in the arid zone during the study period. Seasonal occurrence of roundworm species was significant across all veld types, 64 percent of farmers were males and 36 percent were females. The study reveals that helminths and coccidia are major causative agents causing parasitic infections in livestock production, and therefore, good animal health practices management practices including proper hygiene should be followed to prevent parasitic infection in small ruminants. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 2023

Consequently, this study aimed to examine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of adult patients towards treatment options relating to dental caries in the geographical context of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Purpose Firstly, this quantitative study set out to assess the existing oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices among an adult population visiting dental health facilities in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Secondly, it aimed to examine the prevalence of dental caries, periodontal diseases and tooth associated diseases in this specific setting. Furthermore, the study sought to provide baseline data in order to organise a successful dental prevention programme. The data obtained will determine the layout of policies to be put forward to the Department of Health. Methodology The researcher took a quantitative approach and conducted descriptive surveys from November 2019 to March 2020. A close-ended, structured questionnaire for data collection was designed based on the aspects of knowledge, attitudes, practices and behaviour pertaining to the area of dental caries. A clinical examination of dental status was performed using dental probes, dental mirrors and tooth air-drying. All decay, and missing, filled or restored teeth due to dental caries, along with the presence of calculus, gingival, and periodontal lesions were recorded. Results Participants had an average knowledge score of 80percent with a 95percent confidence interval of (76percent; 84percent). The majority knew the importance of cleaning their teeth (88.9percent), were aware of the effects of sugary diets (80.7percent), avoided sugary foods (64.6percent), and lastly were aware of the causes of dental caries (71.3percent). However it is concerning that most had never visited a dentist, as reflected by 69.1percent of participants agreeing or strongly agreeing. At least 70percent of those who responded were satisfied with their dentists in that they ( the dentists) freely share ideas and opinions and provide advice on options for dental care. The study revealed a high prevalence of dental caries with a ratio of 6.23. Conclusions The majority of the participants affirmed the importance of visiting the dentist for a routine dental examination. In addition, the majority are aware that sugary diets are associated with dental caries. However, there is a high prevalence of dental caries among participants in this setting. Therefore, dentists should provide preventive measures, along with professional restorative and plaque removal, to curb the burden of dental caries and periodontal diseases. The type and extent of preventive measures must be adjusted according to the patient’s individual needs. - Description: The objective of this study was to carry out a comparative assessment of growth characteristics, biomass yield and chemical composition of Panicum maximum and Brachiaria brizantha cultivars at different harvesting stages. The field experiment was conducted at the University of Fort Hare research farm in Alice, South Africa. The main factors were three cultivars: Mombaca, Gatton (Panicum maximum) and Marandu (Brachiaria brizantha) and three harvesting stages (6, 10 and 14 weeks after planting). This study was a 3 × 3 factorial set up in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Characteristics which included plant height, number of leaves and number of tillers were measured in five plants per plot at 2-week intervals from 4 to 14 weeks after planting (WAP). The fresh yield was weighed then oven dried at 65oC for 72 hours then dry matter yield was calculated after drying. The chemical composition (Ash, Fat, ADF, ADL, NDF, CP, Ca, Mg, Na, P, K, Cu, Fe, Zn and Mn) was determined on forage harvested at 6, 10 and 14WAP. Data was analysed using the Statistical Analysis Software in a 3x3 factorial to compute the ANOVA and all means of all treatments were calculated and the difference was tested for significance using the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at P=0.05. The results showed variations (P<0.05) in plant height, but the number of leaves did not differ (P > 0.05) between the cultivars. The number of tillers were significantly different (P<0.05), the highest number of tillers was observed in Mombaca. Fresh yield showed significant differences at 10 and 14WAP, with Marandu producing the highest Fresh yield. The moisture content was different (P<0.05) across all the three harvests. Varying (P< 0.05) results were also observed in the dry matter yield of the cultivars with Mombaca producing the highest dry matter yield. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the ash content of the cultivars. The fat content also showed no significant differences. Variations (P<0.05) occured in the ADF of the cultivars, Marandu had the lowest ADF. The cultivar × WAP interactive effect was significant for ADL content. NDF significantly varied across the cultivars at 6WAP. There were no similarities (P<0.05) in the crude protein during the three harvesting intervals, Mombaca produced the highest CP and the lowest was obtained from Gatton. There was a significant interaction (P<0.05) between the cultivars and harvesting intervals for Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), K/Ca+Mg, Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn) and Manganese (Mn) contents of the cultivars. However, Phosphorus (P) showed no significant interaction (P>0.05) between the cultivars and harvesting intervals. The results obtained in this study showed that as the grasses grow, the biomass yield produced increases according to the genetic makeup and the factors affecting growth and biomass yield. However, the chemical composition decreased between cultivars. Mombaca showed superior traits in terms of growth biomass yield and chemical composition. Mombaca, which is a Panicum maximum cultivar can be used as a choice in forage production and chemical composition as it can supply both quality and quantity. It can be concluded that there are significant differences in growth characteristics, biomass yield and chemical composition of Panicum maximum and Brachiaria brizantha cultivars at different harvesting stages. - Description: Escherichia coli belongs to the genus Escherichia which has five species, including E. hermanii, E. fergusonii, E. vulneris, E. blattae and E. coli (Willshaw et al., 2001). Some E. coli strains are pathogenic, and such strains are differentiated into different pathotypes based on the virulence factors they possess, mechanisms of pathogenesis, clinical manifestation and serotyping of their somatic, flagella and capsule (O, H and K) antigens; while some are nonpathogenic (Dikobe et al., 2011). These strains have been grouped into major pathotypes namely: enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), diffusely adherent E. coli (DAEC), enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) and neonatal meningitis E.coli (NMEC) (Willshaw et al., 2001; Villegas-sepulveda et al., 2003; Kaper et al., 2004; Bugarel et al., 2011). Members of EPEC pathotype are Shiga-toxin producing (STEC) organisms, with E. coli O157:H7 serotype being recognized as the most frequent STEC serotype linked to diseases in human (Barkocy-Gallagher et al., 2001; Coombes et al., 2011; Dikobe et al., 2011; Jacob et al., 2013). E. coli O157:H7 is the major cause of haemorrhagic diarrhoea and haemolytic uremic syndrome (UHS) in humans, due to the production of Shiga-toxins that are similar to Shigella toxins (Villegas-sepulveda et al., 2003; Ngwa et al., 2013). These toxins are coded by genes which allow them to penetrate small intestines of human and animals (Chern et al., 2011). Dairy products and cattle are the major reservoirs of haemorrhagic E. coli O157: H7 (Elder et al., 2000; Elmali et al., 2005; Ayaz et al., 2014). Haemorrhagic E. coli O157:H7 is carried mostly in the gastrointestinal tracts of cows and other ruminants (Gun et al., 2003)and it is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water, or through direct and indirect contact with infected cows and other ruminants and/or via a person to person transmission (Lahti et al., 2003). Almost 70percent of countries in the world use poorly treated water for irrigation; this is inclusive of developing countries, which lack well developed means of adequate water treatment due to unavailable financial resources (Gerba et al., 2011). Most communities in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa are rural with poor water supply with majority of them relying on ground and surface waters that are impacted by insufficiently treated municipal water (which may harbour many pathogens) for domestic purposes (Ateba et al., 2008). Cows may contaminate drinking, recreational and irrigation waters with faecal matters or through direct contact with water (Solomon et al., 2002; Chern et al., 2011). An investigation into identity formation of school- going adolescents : application of the neo- eriksonian paradigm in an urban African context

- Description: The study drew on two approaches on identity formation, each postulating differing but complementary exploration components style and status in an effort to better understand the dimensions of identity formation as measured by the EOM EIS 2 and the ISI3. The sample of the study N 111 was socio/demographically diverse with respect to gender, age, race and language, with participants drawn from an urban high school setting in the Eastern Cape. Overall patterns of results revealed by Analysis of Variance ANOVA suggested that significant differences exist between adolescents with respect to gender and age in a South African context. No significant results were noted for the identity variables of race and language, with the identity variables of the EOM EIS 2 and the ISI3. Inter-correlations among the identity variables of the EOM EIS 2 and the ISI3 for the sample of school-going adolescents in this study were investigated. The sample of the study N 111 was socio/demographically diverse with respect to gender, age, race and language, with participants drawn from an urban high school setting in the Eastern Cape. Overall patterns of results revealed by Analysis of Variance ANOVA suggested that significant differences exist between adolescents with respect to gender and age in a South African context. No significant results were noted for the identity variables of race and language, with the identity variables of the EOM EIS 2 and the ISI3. Inter-correlations among the identity variables of the EOM EIS 2 and the ISI3 for the sample of school-going adolescents in this study were investigated.
