- Description: This research is an exploration into the materiality of forged steel, and is aimed at the preservation of traditional blacksmith forging techniques and methods by incorporating these methods as added skill set during the making of three dimensional visual art. An investigation into the history of traditional forging (iron works) serves as background aimed at the identification of the various techniques and methods utilized during the processes found in traditional blacksmith forging. The practice of this research consists of three parts: firstly, a textual investigation to establish the basics (note taking- visual journal); secondly, practical exercises to gain a better understanding of the behaviour of various steels by utilizing traditional methods of forging to explore the potential applications for the forge as a tool in service of the visual arts; and lastly, reflection on the process to modify and adapt processes (methods and techniques) to promote further interest in the use of a forge as tool during the making of three-dimensional visual art.

Determinants of consumerisation of information technology and its effect on employee performance

With the introduction and adoption of mobile phones, tablets, laptops and even software, organisations are gradually allowing employees to utilise their personal mobile devices at the office to accomplish their tasks. This has led to the term Consumerisation of Information Technology (CIT) or IT consumerisation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the determinants of consumerisation of IT and its effect on job performance of staff at an institution of higher learning. This study used a theoretical framework - The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Usage of Technology – to find out if indeed consumerisation of IT has an effect on job performance. An online questionnaire was sent to the university’s staff email and a total of 230 responses were recorded. The study used a quantitative research approach. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used for data analysis to test the hypotheses. Tests such as the multiple linear regression, factor analysis, correlations, ANOVA and t-tests were used to test the hypotheses. The findings of the study showed that there is a relationship between the determinants of consumerisation of IT and their effect on job performance at the workplace. These determinants are performance expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions. Effort expectancy was the only factor that did not have an effect on consumerisation of IT. As such the study suggested that institutions and organisations to take note of the technological development of devices that can help employees improve their productivity. However, this should be treated with caution as there are also negative effects such as technostress and cyberloafing which may be associated with the advent of consumerisation of IT, therefore it should be a gradual process in order to see the benefits.

A mobile based user centred integrated remote patient monitoring framework for low resource settings

- Description: There is a gap in healthcare service delivery within low resource settings of South Africa. These areas are under-serviced because of poor health infrastructure and few available medical experts. This contributes immensely to poor health care delivery especially to chronically ill diabetic patients and increases mortality rates. However, innovative remote patient monitoring (RPM) systems have been developed to curb the above challenge in recent years. Unfortunately, most of these systems are standalone and are incompatible with one another. Most of them relay on Internet for connectivity which is imminent in low resource settings. This makes continuity of care of chronic ill patients a great challenge. Additional, the efficacy and feasibility of RPM using mobile phones in low resource settings of South Africa are still unknown. It was also noted that none of these systems have been developed for a clinical trial. The goal of this study was to provide a standard framework that allows optimal design of mobile RPM systems which are interoperable. The objectives were to investigate the RPM system efficacy and reliability in low resource settings and determine its effects on clinical management, self-care and health outcomes. The framework was validated with a clinical trial to remotely monitor diabetic adults in Limpopo province of South Africa. A prototype system was developed based on sound user centric design process and enterprise architectural principles to remotely monitor diabetic elderly patients using cellular technologies and existing hospital infrastructure. It was evaluated using a controlled, randomized clinical trial for 6 months. There were 120 patients who took part in the study and were categorized into two groups, the intervention Group X and the control Group Y. Each group comprised of 60 participants. Evidence from this study justified the feasibility and possibility of long term implementation of RPM system to cater for chronic ill patients in low resource settings worldwide. Results showed that the self-care and normal blood glucose levels improved for both groups whereas quality of life improved only for Group X. It was shown that extensive self-care knowledge with the help of RPM system improved self-care and helped normalize their glucose levels. The hospital admissions and mortality between the two groups did not differ much. However, the intervention group had more hospital visits than the control group because the participants were requested to visit the hospitals in case of emergency. The users perceived the RPM system as feasible and effective way of clinical management and self-care. Due to wide acceptance, some patients were even willing to continue using the system after the trial. Home measurements proved to be reliable and helped improve self-care. In future, a standardized and unified framework based on rule set would provide comprehensive remote healthcare allowing continuous patient monitoring at a reduced overall cost thereby decreasing mortality rates.

An IPA study of the integration and work conditions of white teachers in historically black (township) schools

- Description: This interpretative phenomenological analysis study focuses on analyzing the lived experiences of white teachers with regards to their integration and work conditions within the context of historically black (township) schools. It consists of four aims: a) what are the experiences of white teachers teaching in previously disadvantaged schools; b) what do they experience to be major obstacles towards the day to day process of teaching and learning; c) what are the positive highlights and accomplishments they experienced while teaching in previously disadvantaged schools; d) what aspects do they deem essential for an efficient culture of teaching and learning. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with regards to the experiences of the teachers. The methodology chapter will cement the notion of the use of semi-structured interviews as a function within IPA. As a result, this should not be inadvertently be confused to be an aspect of thematic analysis which is distinctive from IPA. Four of the participants were females and one was male. The interview questions were centered on the main aims of the study. Data was analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The results and interpretations of narratives revealed 6 super ordinate themes. They are: a) reinforces; b) enablers and desirable principles; c) social ills and other challenges; d) organization and administration factors; e) challenges with regards to teaching and learning and lastly, f) systemic and systematic issues. The following are the key findings that emerged during the interviews: Most of the teachers felt that they were well integrated in their schools. There was one exception. There were similarities with regards to adapting to working in previously disadvantaged schools. There were variations with the length or duration of service in the teaching profession from a minimum of less than a year, an average of 14 years and a maximum of 30 years. The teachers shared major challenges with regards to discipline among learners. Most of the teachers shared that their schools were variable with regards to lack of amenities and lack of finances. The dominant aspect was that some previously disadvantaged schools had many deprivations or encountered many difficult circumstances. Most of the teachers shared concerns that learning difficulties where being overlooked and there was lack of capacity to correctly intervene with regards to them. Various social ills emerged as having some level of impact on the lives of learners within their schools. Teachers reflected on the experiences about racism and racial intolerance; racial stereotypes and myths as well as no experiences of being marginalized. There were various experiences to diversity, culture and gender. Finally, various systemic and systematic issues that pose a challenge towards education within previously disadvantaged schools emerged. This study is based on the theoretical frameworks of assimilation, integration, multi-cultural education and anti-racist education.

Characterization of the Mitochondrial Plasmodium falciparum heat shock protein 70

- Description: Malaria remains a global health problem and accounts for many deaths and illnesses in subSaharan Africa. Plasmodium falciparum, the causative agent of the most fatal form of malaria, expresses a repertoire of heat shock proteins for cytoprotection, survival and pathogenesis. The parasite genome encodes six Hsp70 proteins found in various cell compartments. However, the putative parasite mitochondrial Hsp70 (PfHsp70-3) has not been investigated. The J-proteins, Pfj1 and PFF1415c, were proposed to function as co-chaperones of PfHsp70-3. The biochemical characterization of PfHsp70-3 was initially complicated by the fact that the protein was insoluble when expressed in E. coli cells. Various approaches to solubilize it resulted in inactive protein. A general characteristic of eukaryotic mitochondrial Hsp70s is their insolubility and their reliance on an Hsp70 escort protein (Hep) for solubility and ultimate functions. In this study, a putative Hep protein was identified in the genome of P. falciparum that is referred to as PfHep1. Coexpression of PfHep1 with PfHsp70-3 resulted in soluble and biochemically active PfHsp70-3. Size exclusion chromatography was employed to separate PfHsp70-3 from PfHep1 after coexpression. PfHep1 suppressed thermally induced aggregation of PfHsp70-3 but not the aggregation of malate dehydrogenase or citrate synthase, thus showing specificity for PfHsp70-3. Zinc ions were also found to be essential for maintaining the functions of PfHep1, as EDTA chelation abrogated its abilities to suppress the aggregation of PfHsp70-3. Furthermore, PfHep1 did not stimulate the basal ATPase or increase refoldase activities of PfHsp70-3 hence displaying no co-chaperone roles. The full-length putative mitochondrial type I J protein, Pfj1, could not be produced in E.coli but a truncated protein containing the J-domain was produced which stimulated both the ATPase and refoldase activities of PfHsp70-3. Further, this study demonstrated that both PfHep1 and PfHsp70-3 localized to the mitochondrion in the erythrocytic stage of P. falciparum development thus confirming in silico predictions of their localization. Besides, PfHsp70-3 was expressed during all stages of the intraerythrocytic cycle of parasite development and was heat inducible. Generally, the data obtained in this study will enhance the existing knowledge on the biology of the parasite mitochondrial chaperone functions and open the possible avenue of drug targeting considering the specificity of PfHsp70- 3 and PfHep1 partnerships.

Geological and geophysical investigations of the reservoir rock properties of the Gamtoos Basin in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

- Description: Geological and geophysical studies of the Gamtoos Basin were carried out by using the research methods of stratigraphic analysis, petrographic analysis, sedimentary facies analysis, and geophysical studies. The orientation of the Gamtoos Basin onshore is controlled by the Gamtoos Fault which cuts through the lithologies of the Cape Supergroup on the eastern edge of the basin. Magnetic data and depth slices show the presence of the Cape Supergroup basement on the south east corner of the onshore Kirkwood Formation which is further sitting on the Gamtoos Group basement from the Neoproterozoic extending up to 8860 m in depth. Most previously compiled stratigraphic profiles of the Uitanhage Group revealed the presence of reddish massive conglomerate units from the Enon Formation and massive reddish to greenish alternating units of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones from the Kirkwood Formation. The results obtained from this research also revealed the presence of reddish to whitish massive alternating units of sandstones, mudstones and siltstones from the upper Enon Formation overlaying the reddish massive conglomeritic layers while the alternating reddish to greenish units of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones from the Kirkwood Formation are overlaid by massive reddish to greyish conglomeritic layers. Thirteen types of lithofacies and five types of biofacies were accounted for across the Gamtoos Basin from core logs, field observations and petrographic analysis. The same type of reddish to greyish massive conglomerate facies interbedded with subordinate sandstone lenses were observed on both the Enon (Lower most part) and the Kirkwood (top most part) Formations. Similar reddish to whitish sandstone facies were also observed in both formations except some of the units from the Kirkwood Formation revealed the presence of a lot of sedimentary structures such as laminations, thin beds, tabular cross beds, trough cross beds, convolute structures, load casts and even secondary structures like calcite veins and honey comb structures. Mudstone deposits are divided into reddish laminated facies and whitish massive facies. The whitish mudstone facies of the Enon Formation comprise caliche indicating the process of leaching while the reddish facies contain mudcracks indicating the process of desiccation. The Kirkwood Formation comprises reddish laminated mudstone facies and whitish massive mudstones. Petrographic studies revealed the presence of quartz arenites, lithic arenites, quartz wacke, lithic wacke, pelletic wacke, siltstones and mudstones. The mineral compositions were monocrystalline and polycrystalline quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar and lithic fragments as the main framework grains. Muscovite and glauconite were identified as accessory minerals along with heavy minerals of hematite spotted on a few occasions. The matrix was composed of clay (mainly kaolinite and smectite), bentonite, illite-sericite and fine quartz silts. Microscope petrography revealed that organic matters occurred in 4 occurrences, i.e. as organic intraclasts, kerogen pellets, organic carbon laminae or stringers, and diagenetic crack-filling organic carbon (asphalt). Density determinations onshore have revealed an average wet density of 2.439 g/cm3 for the Enon Formation sandstones and 2.589 g/cm3 for the Kirkwood Formation sandstones. The average rock density for Borehole Ha-B2 is 2.67 g/cm3 whereas Borehole Ha-G1 rocks show an average density of 2.64 g/cm3. Geophysical data from the offshore boreholes has indicated an increase in the following parameters with depth: bulk density, porosity and geothermal gradient. Data from borehole logs resulted in a linear relationship between bulk density and depth although some boreholes were represented by more than one linear segment in one graph still showing gradual increase of bulk density with depth. The basin was deposited in terrestrial environments (braided fluvial fans and meandering rivers) and marine environments (beach, shallow and deep marine).

- Description: Geological and geophysical studies of the Gamtoos Basin were carried out by using the research methods of stratigraphic analysis, petrographic analysis, sedimentary facies analysis, and geophysical studies. The orientation of the Gamtoos Basin onshore is controlled by the Gamtoos Fault which cuts through the lithologies of the Cape Supergroup on the eastern edge of the basin. Magnetic data and depth slices show the presence of the Cape Supergroup basement on the south east corner of the onshore Kirkwood Formation which is further sitting on the Gamtoos Group basement from the Neoproterozoic extending up to 8860 m in depth. Most previously compiled stratigraphic profiles of the Uitanhage Group revealed the presence of reddish massive conglomerate units from the Enon Formation and massive reddish to greenish alternating units of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones from the Kirkwood Formation. The results obtained from this research also revealed the presence of reddish to whitish massive alternating units of sandstones, mudstones and siltstones from the upper Enon Formation overlaying the reddish massive conglomeritic layers while the alternating reddish to greenish units of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones from the Kirkwood Formation are overlaid by massive reddish to greyish conglomeritic layers. Thirteen types of lithofacies and five types of biofacies were accounted for across the Gamtoos Basin from core logs, field observations and petrographic analysis. The same type of reddish to greyish massive conglomerate facies interbedded with subordinate sandstone lenses were observed on both the Enon (Lower most part) and the Kirkwood (top most part) Formations. Similar reddish to whitish sandstone facies were also observed in both formations except some of the units from the Kirkwood Formation revealed the presence of a lot of sedimentary structures such as laminations, thin beds, tabular cross beds, trough cross beds, convolute structures, load casts and even secondary structures like calcite veins and honey comb structures. Mudstone deposits are divided into reddish laminated facies and whitish massive facies. The whitish mudstone facies of the Enon Formation comprise caliche indicating the process of leaching while the reddish facies contain mudcracks indicating the process of desiccation. The Kirkwood Formation comprises reddish laminated mudstone facies and whitish massive mudstones. Petrographic studies revealed the presence of quartz arenites, lithic arenites, quartz wacke, lithic wacke, pelletic wacke, siltstones and mudstones. The mineral compositions were monocrystalline and polycrystalline quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar and lithic fragments as the main framework grains. Muscovite and glauconite were identified as accessory minerals along with heavy minerals of hematite spotted on a few occasions. The matrix was composed of clay (mainly kaolinite and smectite), bentonite, illite-sericite and fine quartz silts. Microscope petrography revealed that organic matters occurred in 4 occurrences, i.e. as organic intraclasts, kerogen pellets, organic carbon laminae or stringers, and diagenetic crack-filling organic carbon (asphalt). Density determinations onshore have revealed an average wet density of 2.439 g/cm3 for the Enon Formation sandstones and 2.589 g/cm3 for the Kirkwood Formation sandstones. The average rock density for Borehole Ha-B2 is 2.67 g/cm3 whereas Borehole Ha-G1 rocks show an average density of 2.64 g/cm3. Geophysical data from the offshore boreholes has indicated an increase in the following parameters with depth: bulk density, porosity and geothermal gradient. Data from borehole logs resulted in a linear relationship between bulk density and depth although some boreholes were represented by more than one linear segment in one graph still showing gradual increase of bulk density with depth. The basin was deposited in terrestrial environments (braided fluvial fans and meandering rivers) and marine environments (beach, shallow and deep marine).

Furtive economic factors in Zimbabwe and South Africa that dissuade skilled migrants from returning home permanently are explored. Social factors in Zimbabwe and in South Africa that influence return migration decision making are also examined. Furthermore, the study analysed whether and how Zimbabwean skilled migrants are forced into a permanent settlement in South Africa as a result of what this study calls the ‘diaspora trap’. This ‘diaspora trap’ framework argues that Zimbabwean skilled migrants in South Africa do not return following their experiences of failure and success in South Africa. Central to the absence of return is the social construction of migrants as successful in Zimbabwe. Skilled migrants are deterred from returning due to their failure to meet family and communal expectations of success. In addition, return migration is deferred as a means to hide poverty in South Africa. Moreover, new diaspora family ties weaken attachments with Zimbabwe and contribute to deferred return migration. Skilled migrants are thus entrapped in South Africa by their failure to live up to the success social construct and the inability to mitigate adversities in the host country.

I use as a case study a theatremaking process I facilitated with a group of first year drama students at the Market Theatre Laboratory, in which we created a play called Four Husbands for Ma Lindi. The research analyses how this process interacted with the identities-in-becoming of the individual creators, and their engagement with the world, through a methodology that views them as experts on their own lives. There are three main arguments that I put forward in this thesis: the first is based on the experiences of healing, increased confidence and self-knowledge described by the participants as a result of sharing their personal stories in making the play. I argue that exploring autobiographical narratives through the aesthetic of theatre creates a group story that re-situates the narratives, the tellers and the witnesses in ways that can be productive for sexual and personal wellbeing, while also providing a counter-narrative that problematises the idea that sharing personal stories is always and necessarily a positive act. My second argument is that theatre-making, because it is an embodied performance pedagogy, is a constructive site in which to interrogate, deconstruct and subvert embedded gender norms and values, which are learnt and reiterated in the body. My third argument considers the relationship between theatre and change that is suggested by the findings of the research. In an analysis of the responses of the participants, I contend that theatre's potential for creating change in the socio-cultural domain lies in its ability to carve out spaces for improvisation, rather than to serve as a rehearsal for the real world. This is the position from which I then consider my ethics of practice and the role and responsibility of the facilitator in processes that view theatre-making as a critical performance pedagogy.

It is a qualitative case study underpinned by an interpretive paradigm. The unit of analysis for this study was teachers’ perceptions and experiences of teaching the topic of human reproduction. Data were generated through document analysis, questionnaires and tape recorded semi-structured interviews. Such data were analysed inductively by sorting them into categories and then into emerging themes. Categories included teachers’ views and experiences of being taught and teaching human reproduction, how culture influenced the manner in which teaching and learning of human reproduction takes place as stated in the socio-cultural theory, and how teachers of different gender perceived and experienced the teaching of human reproduction according to the feminist standpoint theory. The emerging themes were colour coded and then developed into analytical statements. Data triangulation, member checking, and follow up interviews ensured data validity and trustworthiness. This study revealed that the cultural belief of the Owambo people that prohibits adults to talk to children about things related to sex because it encourages them to practice sex is still strong among individuals in the community including teachers themselves. As a result, teachers are not comfortable with teaching human reproduction topics. From the findings, it is recommended that teachers should be empowered to teach Life Science, specifically human reproduction topics, with confidence. Furthermore, parents should be made aware of the importance of including human reproduction topics in the school curriculum so that they can motivate their children to study it with an open mind.

- Description: In this era of globalisation and the consequent increase in social, economic and physical mobility, small businesses are transforming into sites of increasing language contact (Harris and Bargiela-Chiappini 2003). This study explores situated language practices within two small multilingual businesses. The first is a bicycle rental and repair shop located in Amsterdam (the Netherlands), which is a city with a dynamic multilingual society. The second is a tyre fitment centre in Grahamstown (South Africa), which is a city characterised by a stable triglossia of English, Xhosa and Afrikaans. Using Linguistic Ethnography (Rampton 2007) as my data collection method, I spent a total of eight weeks in these businesses. For the analysis I draw on Spencer-Oatey’s (2000b; 2011) Rapport Management Framework and sociolinguistics of globalisation (Blommaert 2010). This combination allowed me to explore situated language practices in relation to a contemporary context of increased globalisation. The analysis is structured using Spencer-Oatey’s (2000b) concept of rapport orientations. The orientations are presented as one of the key factors that influence the choice for a certain strategy. The orientations thus seemed a constructive way of showing how the observed strategies were employed by the participants of this study and what function they fulfilled in a certain context. However, difficulties emerged during the analysis with applying this concept to some of the more elaborate and complex data. As a result my argument developed into two different strands. The first demonstrates how individuals turn to their multilingual repertoires to negotiate agency and power relationships in small business discourse. The analysis reveals that people at times deliberately promote and maintains discordant relations, which can be understood as a rational response to the individual’s social and economic context. The second discusses the problems that emerged during my analysis with applying rapport management orientations to my data. I propose theoretical developments, warranted by my data, to create an Enhanced Rapport Management Framework suitable for the analysis of complex small business discourse.

- Description: The South African government has shown enormous commitment to the achievement of “Education for All” (EFA) through its policies premised on the right to basic education for all which is enshrined in the constitution. Central to the South African constitution, is a fundamental right of all citizens to basic education, equity, redress, and the improvement of quality of schooling. Further, pro-poor funding policies such as school fee exemptions, social grants and, most recently, the designation of 60% of all schools as ‘no fee’ schools, have made it possible for even the poorest learners to attend school. This has affirmed South Africa’s commitment to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. In light of Notwithstanding the progress made in South Africa in universalising education, there are concerns regarding learner access to quality education, especially in poor provinces such as the Eastern Cape where this study is situated. Thus, the purpose of this study is to further understanding of the interface between learners’ agency and access to education in two township public high schools in Makana District in the Eastern Cape Province. In doing so, the research addresses the current under-representation in the literature of the voices of learners about their experiences of access to education. Drawing on Margaret Archer’s social realist approach to the relationship between structure and agency, the study explores learner agency with the aim of understanding how learners exercise their agency as they struggle to negotiate and overcome difficult and challenging circumstances in order to access education. The data collection was carried out during the academic year 2011, using a qualitative case study approach. Multiple methods of data collection were used. First, data was collected through questionnaires administered to learners. This questionnaire asked for basic information about the schools (for example, subjects, resources and teachers ), parents ( their education, employment, qualification etc.) and learners’ aspirations (their role model; where they see themselves in 5 years; which university they would like to attend; and what they would like to become in future). Secondly, observation method was used to collect data that would inform an assessment of the school’s structure and cultural practices and the impact these have on learners’ access to education. The focus here was also on classroom interaction between learners and teachers, as well as classroom participation, participation in extra-mural activities and voluntary activities, and interaction with peers and others in a variety of school settings. Thirdly, interviews with learners, educators, principals, and parents were used to provide insight about how participants construct their social worlds. In this study the primary data was collected through semi-structured individual and focus group interview. And finally, document analysis was used to analyse the attendance and performance of learners on attendance registers. Findings from this research have enabled new themes and areas for reflection about learner agency to emerge. These themes reflect current and ongoing constraints and enablements towards learners’ educational experiences. In particular, themes such as the following have surfaced: learners changing their lives; the desire to succeed; shaping the future; the value of education; family pride; aspirations and careers. This study addressed these developments by examining agency as temporally located reflexive deliberations of learners upon their future goals and present social environment. This allowed for the identification of individuals’ future goals in relation to access to education and the strategies that they intend to pursue to achieve them, in relation to their personal and social contexts. The findings show the choices and decisions learners are prepared to make and the strategies they use as they engage with socio-cultural environments. Archer’s nuanced approach to agency and structure offers tools to help make sense of learners’ equally nuanced way of engaging with various social structures and making considered decisions about their social environment. Key findings of this research suggest that despite the constraining social structures in their homes, communities and schools, learners make decisions and choices that enable them to navigate social contexts to their advantage. Put differently, for learners, social structures provided the impetus for the projects they created, and to this extent enabled rather than constrained their courses of action.

Drawing on Margaret Archer’s social realist approach to the relationship between structure and agency, the study explores learner agency with the aim of understanding how learners exercise their agency as they struggle to negotiate and overcome difficult and challenging circumstances in order to access education. The data collection was carried out during the academic year 2011, using a qualitative case study approach. Multiple methods of data collection were used. First, data was collected through questionnaires administered to learners. This questionnaire asked for basic information about the schools (for example, subjects, resources and teachers ), parents ( their education, employment, qualification etc.) and learners’ aspirations (their role model; where they see themselves in 5 years; which university they would like to attend; and what they would like to become in future). Secondly, observation method was used to collect data that would inform an assessment of the school’s structure and cultural practices and the impact these have on learners’ access to education. The focus here was also on classroom interaction between learners and teachers, as well as classroom participation, participation in extra-mural activities and voluntary activities, and interaction with peers and others in a variety of school settings. Thirdly, interviews with learners, educators, principals, and parents were used to provide insight about how participants construct their social worlds. In this study the primary data was collected through semi-structured individual and focus group interview. And finally, document analysis was used to analyse the attendance and performance of learners on attendance registers. Findings from this research have enabled new themes and areas for reflection about learner agency to emerge. These themes reflect current and ongoing constraints and enablements towards learners’ educational experiences. In particular, themes such as the following have surfaced: learners changing their lives; the desire to succeed; shaping the future; the value of education; family pride; aspirations and careers. This study addressed these developments by examining agency as temporally located reflexive deliberations of learners upon their future goals and present social environment. This allowed for the identification of individuals’ future goals in relation to access to education and the strategies that they intend to pursue to achieve them, in relation to their personal and social contexts. The findings show the choices and decisions learners are prepared to make and the strategies they use as they engage with socio-cultural environments. Archer’s nuanced approach to agency and structure offers tools to help make sense of learners’ equally nuanced way of engaging with various social structures and making considered decisions about their social environment. Key findings of this research suggest that despite the constraining social structures in their homes, communities and schools, learners make decisions and choices that enable them to navigate social contexts to their advantage. Put differently, for learners, social structures provided the impetus for the projects they created, and to this extent enabled rather than constrained their courses of action.

A predictable link was found between linguistic self-confidence, willingness to communicate [WTC] and language use anxiety. What made this finding interesting was that participants seemed to fear being judged by native English speakers to a greater extent than being judged by their peers. Finally some factors emerged as detracting from motivation, while others played a contributing role. While this is to be expected, it was interesting to note which factors fell into which category.

Nutrient digestibility in South African abalone (Haliotis Midae L.)

- Description: The evaluation of potential alternative protein sources for the formulation of least-cost optimal diets to satisfy the nutrient requirements of South African abalone (Haliotis midae) has been hampered by the absence of a suitable, practical, replicable and reliable digestibility technique. A suitable lowcost faeces collection technique was developed in this study to obtain suitable quantities of excreta for analysis from this species. Acid-insoluble ash was identified as a reliable, replicable and safe internal marker in comparison to chromic oxide and crude fibre for use in nutrient digestibility studies with H. midae. This was validated by the consistency and repeatability of the results and by comparison to total collection of faeces. The traditional substitution method used in digestibility studies with fish to evaluate protein digestibility of feed ingredients was found to be unsuitable for H. midae. Apparent protein digestibility values exceeding 100 % derived through this method could be attributed to associative effects between feed ingredients, differential diet and faecal nutrient leaching, and mathematical artifacts in calculations when using substitution versus single protein diets. An ingredient particle size of less than 450 μm in comparison to particle size classes of above 450 μm was shown to enhance nutrient (dry matter, organic matter, protein, fat) digestibility and minimise dry matter leaching from diets. The dietary inclusion level of both pre-gelatinised maize starch and a-cellulose did not influence (P > 0.05) apparent nutrient (protein, fat, fiber, starch) digestibility. Using the above digestibility protocol amino acid availability of all plants ingredients currently used in the South African animal industry was evaluated for H. midae. Soybean meal (96.86 %) and lupins (96.51 %) presented the highest apparent mean amino acid availability of all plant protein ingredients evaluated with H. midae. Canola meal (94.21 %), faba beans (92.87 %) sunflower meal (92.77 %), peanut meal (87.39 %) and cottonseed meal (85.15 %) presented higher apparent mean amino acid availability values than fish meal (82.75 %). Apparent protein digestibility was highly correlated (r = 0.99) with mean apparent amino acid availability, while true amino acid availability was 1.88 % units higher than apparent amino acid availability for all ingredients tested. Predicted apparent protein digestibility in compound diets was within 1.1-6.5 % of determined values. Calcium phosphate mono dibasic presented the lowest (P < 0.05) dietary phosphorus leaching (51.51 % maximum) and highest apparent phosphorus digestibility (66.27 %) in comparison to other inorganic phosphorus sources. Based on the method of direct experimentation to determine the optimal dietary protein level using graded levels of dietary protein 28.1-35.9 % dietary protein from good quality sources is recommended for maximum growth of juvenile H. midae. This study provides a scientifically sound research tool including a faecal collection technique, suitable marker and assay technique that could be use in further studies to improve least-cost diet formulation for H. midae. Future nutritional studies in H. midae should primarily concentrate on reducing dietary nutrient leaching and improving the intake of nutrients in order to properly evaluate responses of this species to different dietary regimes.

While resistance from inside and outside the government during the first two periods resulted from inadequacies in the South African Antarctic policy itself, resistance in the final two periods has centred upon non-Antarctic issues. As South Africa has faced ever-increasing exclusion from international governmental organizations over opposition to Its apartheid policies, organizations such as the Antarctic Treaty Organization have inevitably been drawn into the debate. As a result, the Consultative Parties of the Antarctic Treaty (of which South Africa is one of the original twelve) have been forced to deal with the following question: to what extent will political issues outside the scope of the management policies of the Antarctic Treaty Organization be allowed to affect the functioning of the Antarctic Treaty System? While the Consultative Parties continue to ponder this and the fact that South Africa's Consultative Status has become the most divisive factor within the Antarctic Treaty System, no final solutions to these issues appear likely before 1991.

This investigation was prompted by the fact that though he was by no means the settler to suffer misfortune and injustice, he was the only proprietor of a small party who eventually secured compensation. The case was the case of James Erith but the initiative and persistence was that of his wife, Jane Erith, who made in all five voyages spread over twelve years, before she secured some at least of the ends she sought and the family settled in Cape Town. The Eriths fought their case with the respective Colonial Offices for twelve years in all, and in the case of the Colonial Office, London, confronted no less than four Secretaries of State in five successive Cabinets. In the course of their struggle the Eriths received (a) the balance of their deposit; (b) cash compensation for cattle stolen by the Xhosa, and in the fina1 arbitration in 1832 the sum of £500 cash. James Erith, master baker, remains a rather shadowy figure, sharp-sighted to his own interest, querulous and not very effective. The triumph of 1832 was in the main the triumph of Jane, his wife, an amateur and robust Portia. Shrewd, tenacious, deft in argument this importunate woman knew how to stand her ground; there can have been few women who secured passage on a naval vessel and then allowed the Admiralty to submit its account to the Colonial Office. How the Eriths subsisted between their eviction from Waaye Plaats in 1823 and the arbitration award of 1832, has not been established. On occasion in London Mrs. Erith stayed with the Rev. R. Stewarts, Rutland House, Black Heath Road in Greenwich: in Cape Town it is believed that Erith plied his old trade. When he died there, in 1869 at the age of seventy nine, he left a house and three cottages to his daughter Ellen: mortgaged property in the district of Caledon, to his son-in-law George Budge : a house and three mortgaged properties in Simon’s Town to his daughter Anne Budge. He left an income of £24 per annum to his daughter Jane Moodie, widow of the late John Powell. The records used in this study, in addition to those printed in Theal, were the series C.O. 48 from the Public Record Office, London, now available on microfilm in the Cory Library at Rhodes University and records of the District of Albany in the Archives, Cape Town. The investigation has, it is thought, thrown new light on the background to the emigration scheme of 1819, on the mishandling of the Settlers in the Zuurveld after their arrival in the Cape, and on the punctilious attention to detail given by the Colonial Office, London. While it is true that the interests of the Eriths were probably smothered in the Tory endeavour to damp down the attack on Somerset in l826-1827, the Secretaries of State are by no means discredited by this analysis. It sasys much for any pattern of administration that in the thick of the Reform Bill crisis, the efforts of a single obscure member of Parliament, Mr. J O Briscoe, could secure a final arbitration award.

The records used in this study, in addition to those printed in Theal, were the series C.O. 48 from the Public Record Office, London, now available on microfilm in the Cory Library at Rhodes University and records of the District of Albany in the Archives, Cape Town. The investigation has, it is thought, thrown new light on the background to the emigration scheme of 1819, on the mishandling of the Settlers in the Zuurveld after their arrival in the Cape, and on the punctilious attention to detail given by the Colonial Office, London. While it is true that the interests of the Eriths were probably smothered in the Tory endeavour to damp down the attack on Somerset in l826-1827, the Secretaries of State are by no means discredited by this analysis. It sasys much for any pattern of administration that in the thick of the Reform Bill crisis, the efforts of a single obscure member of Parliament, Mr. J O Briscoe, could secure a final arbitration award.

- Description: T.S. Eliot's statement that myth is an ordering device in literature 'is constantly belied by his use of myth in his own poems'. This is the belief of the American critic Richard Chase, noted for his work on myths and mythological themes in English and American literature. Whether or not Chase is right must emerge from the chapters which follow. The purpose will be to examine the effects of the use of myths and mythological patterns on Eliot's work in general, rather than to annotate individual mythological allusions. Simply to recognise an allusion is to raise a question, not to answer one: for we have then to decide what the writer hope to achieve by its use, and whether or not he has succeeded. Unless they lead on to such questions, lists of sources contribute little to our understanding of a work. Far more important than incidental allusions are the mythological themes and patterns on the larger scale, which reveal themselves in recurrent allusions and in basic patterns of symbolism. Again, merely to recognise such a pattern is inadequate: in every case a discovery of its function in both the poem's (or play's) structure and the poet's technique should be our main concern. ... Eliot himself has made it clear that in his case the use of myths and mythological patterns has often been a fully conscious, even self-conscious process. Therefore we may apply to his work the questions mention by Norman: what functions the myths fulfil within individual works; and why Eliot uses them in the first place. This last question leads us back to a more fundamental one; why do many writers, especially modern ones, use myths 'in the first place'? The problem involves discussion of the relation between myths and literature and of the nature of myths themselves, this forms the material of the first chapter. The other chapters will deal with some of Eliot's works, attempting to explain and analyse his use of myths in them, and to illustrate its importance in each case.
