- Description: [from introduction] The Agulhas Current is by far the largest western boundary current of the southern hemisphere1 and carries about 70 × 106 m3/s of seawater past the eastern shores of South Africa.2 Being more than 2000 m deep, it follows the continental shelf edge quite closely. Its northern part, all the way downstream to Algoa Bay, has a very stable trajectory whereas the southern part meanders widely to either side of a mean geographical location,3 in the process creating shear edge eddies and attendant plumes of warm surface water over the shelf.4 However, the direct influence of the Agulhas Current on the waters and ecosystems of the adjacent shelf of South Africa remains largely unknown.

In search of critical engagement: a history of South African university based journalism

- Description: Historical discussions of South African journalism education (Tomaselli 1991: 167; De Beer and Tomaselli 2000; Steenveld 2006) refer to examples of teaching practice which have served as critical interventions into political process. They occur primarily in the late 1970s and 1980s and it is arguable that the social circumstances that existed during this period presented unique opportunities for critical education. The literature suggests, however, that these examples represent the exception rather than the rule. It would seem, in fact, that a critical approach to journalism education has never been realised in South Africa in any substantive way. It is with this argument in mind that I explore, in this paper, the historical construction of journalism as a subject of university education in South Africa.

The commercial agricultural economy of the East Cape: Die kommersiële landbou-ekonomie van die Oos-Kaap

- Description: The East Cape, and in particular the Smaldeel area, is used to exemplify some of the characteristics and problems of commercial farming over a period of about three decades to serve as a backdrop for the broader theme of normalising South African agriculture. The regional economy is dominated by Port Elizabeth-Uitenhage and East London which account for most of the population and three-fourths of the Gross Geographic Product (GGP). Agriculture accounts for only 10% of GGP, but is one of the most labour intensive sectors in a region with 24% of its population unemployed. The agricultural economy of the region is very diversified, but livestock farming plays the most important part in all areas contributing 72% of gross income. The chief changes which have occured in East Cape farming, as elsewhere, have been the decline in the number of farms and increase in farm size, greater capital investment, increased specialisation and declining employment.
