Relationship between alcohol use patterns and knowledge of alcohol-attributable health conditions among undergraduate students' at a university in the Eastern Cape

It is against this background that this study aimed to establish the relationship between alcohol use, knowledge of alcohol-attributable health conditions and biographical characteristics. Literature review: The study was based on a review of literature on prevalence and patterns of alcohol use among university students, knowledge of alcohol-attributable chronic diseases, foetal alcohol syndrome, sexual and reproductive health and alcohol use measurement. Methodology: Data were collected from 213 undergraduate students enrolled for the Statistics service courses on two campuses of the same university. The Mann-Whitney normal approximation and the Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare health knowledge across levels of alcohol use and biographical characteristics. The chi-squared test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to determine the significance and patterns of associations between alcohol use and health knowledge and biographical characteristics. Results: The prevalence rates of alcohol use and risky alcohol use were found to be 58.2 percent and 42.7 percent, respectively. The mean health knowledge was 42.9 percent, which, is rather low. Males [OR=0.3; 95 percentCI (0.18; 0.68)], returning students [OR=0.5; 95 percentCI (0.25; 0.94)] and those with employed fathers [OR=2.3; 95 percentCI (1.19; 4.47)] were found to be at a higher risk of alcohol use. Health knowledge was significantly higher among alcohol users (Z=-2.7; p=0.0074) and those whose fathers had a post matric education (𝜒2=6.4; p=0.0410) and/or employment (Z=-2.7; p=0.0064). Conclusion: While prevalence rates of alcohol use and risky alcohol were high, health knowledge was disappointingly low. This suggests need for interventions designed to minimise alcohol use while at the same time increasing health knowledge.

- Description: The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the Republic of Sudan represented by the National Congress Party (NCP) and the SPLM (Sudan People’s Liberation Movement) which represented the people of the Southern part of Sudan in January 2005 ushered in a rare era of peace and hope for the rebuilding and construction of the war ravaged South Sudan. Coupled with the attainment of Independence for South Sudan through an internationally supervised referendum in January 2011, the objectives of years of struggle by the people of the formerly semi-autonomous region were completed. From 2005 until after the independence of South Sudan however, a period that initially was marked by huge euphoria and broad based anticipation of development boom, the support from both local and international actors for the struggle and the plight of the people of South Sudan is waning and at worst has now turned into despair and hopelessness. After attaining independence in 2011, the highest party organ, the Political Bureau decided to remove candidates who were popularly voted by their constituents and replaced them with their cronies, leading to mass exodus of cadres from the party. On top of that, the wide believe that the elections were rigged for SPLM candidates at the expense of the Independent candidates led to another wave of exodus and open rebellion by many veteran cadres of the movement. Today, these rebellions coupled with some complex problematic societal issues are major concern and a source of political instability and violence in some parts of the country. Secondly, the hasty process of the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) campaign, which in some cases were forcefully done left some communities exposed and venerable to attacks by rival communities. This continue to exacerbate and ignite tribal hatred, tension and stereotypes between communities especially in the traditionally volatile parts of the country that are known for cattle rustling and tribal rivalry as a form of cultural practice. Unresolved post secession issues within the SPLM had resulted to political instability and violence thus having negative economic consequences for South Sudan and all the gains the country had made in the past few years vanished after December 15 2013 political upheaval. This thesis will examine the effects of these mentioned complex political instability and economic dilemma South Sudan is being confronted with in the face of the fact that it is still in the process of nation building having attained its Independence only in July 2011.

- Description: The use of a handheld Raman analyser for the positive identification of raw materials in a manufacturing pharmaceutical company was evaluated using paracetamol as test raw material to evaluate whether such a system would meet Aspen’s regulatory requirements. The approach involved subjecting the chosen raw material to identification tests under a variety of conditions so as to evaluate robustness, and specificity of the system. Thus, raw material provided by different suppliers, different packages of one manufacturing batch, and raw materials subjected to different storage conditions were evaluated. Specificity was evaluated by deliberately contaminating a sample of paracetamol with either acetanilide, or 4-aminophenol, or both at varying concentration levels. The results obtained from these investigations showed that the handheld Raman analyser can correctly identify the selected raw material (paracetamol) under a wide range of conditions, but could not correctly identify the presence of the selected contaminants at lower concentration levels (< 10 – 20 mass percent). Finally, a cost-benefit analysis was carried out in which a scenario of an existing FTIR-ATR system is used for the analysis of a specific number of raw material samples per year as opposed to a scenario in which a new handheld Raman analyser has to be purchased, set up, and used for the analysis of the same number of raw material samples. This comparison showed that the handheld Raman analyser had a pay-back time of approximately 6 months and gave a return on investment of approximately the same value as the actual purchase cost.

In 1987, several Commonwealth associations founded the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) to promote human rights issues. CHRI’s International Right to Information (RTI) Program focuses on monitoring and supporting the push for recognition and implementation of the right to information throughout the 53 states of the Commonwealth and the institutions of the Commonwealth itself. Generally, legal literacy efforts focus on human rights. It was originally used in a context where citizens, particularly from the marginalized or underprivileged groups, were made to know what the law had to offer them so that they could recognise and challenge injustices much more forcefully. The first step towards that knowledge of the law, which can transform people’s lives, is legal literacy. Legal literacy puts one in the driver’s seat of risk management. Generally, legal literacy efforts focus on human rights.

Planning and managing curriculum implementation in rural schools: an investigation

Middlewood (2003a: 66- 68) thus assigns the primary responsibility of planning, managing and overseeing the curriculum implementation process to the SMT. Research problem and question 1 In the context of this study, the School Management Team (SMT) includes the school principal, the deputy-principal and the head(s) of department(s) or senior teachers. 4 for teachers in the classroom. Having considered the above essential aspects related to curriculum implementation, there is thus reason to be concerned about the effectiveness of curriculum implementation in South African schools, specifically in rural schools. Due to their remoteness, limited resources, and fluctuating quality of teacher expertise, these schools are often more challenged in terms of curriculum implementation (Delport and Mangwaya, 2008:224). Although there are many factors affecting the (in)effectiveness of implementation, this study regards a school’s curriculum implementation plans and the subsequent management of these implementation plans as crucial to ensuring successful implementation of a new curriculum. The central research problem that guided this study thus relates to the planning and subsequent management of curriculum implementation at school level. The above problem has culminated in the formulation of the following research question: How do selected rural schools plan and manage curriculum implementation?.
