- Description: The Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act,1 hereinafter referred to as SORMA, came into operation on 16 December 2007 and acknowledges in its preamble, the then current, inadequate and discriminatory measures provided for in common law and statute relating to sexual offences. Although it aimed to address these measures, through the repeal of various common law sexual offences and the introduction, or amendment, of comprehensive statutory offences relating to sexual offences against children and vulnerable individuals, the legislature failed to take advantage of a golden opportunity; being the introduction of inquisitorial elements in the South African sexual offences legal framework.2 Through the introduction of SORMA, provisions relating to sexual offences against children were introduced, unfortunately it included sexual offences amongst children as well.3 However, this was declared unconstitutional in The Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children and Rapcan v Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development,4 and Parliament was allowed 18 months to rectify the defect in the enactment. Although, Parliament failed to abide by the time period provided by the Constitutional Court, a larger disappointment was on the horizon; the realisation that the applicants’ constitutional challenge was too narrow. This, together with the lack of foresight on the part of the legislature, lead to SORMA, even in its amended form, being mainly accusatorial in nature. Furthermore, and despite the amendments, SORMA failed to completely decriminalise consensual sexual activity between children. Despite its shortcomings, SORMA could be said to provide adequate provisions relating to all possible sexual offences against children and vulnerable individuals. However, the shortcomings are not restricted to the provisions of the enactment, the shortcomings relate to the application thereof. Should inquisitorial elements be introduced, the focus of the trial would shift away from the victim and shift on to the accused, thereby extending the protection offered to children and vulnerable individuals to the maximum extent.

- Description: The aim of this work is to analyse the technique for formulating cellular metabolism in living organisms. It also focuses on developing models of cellular metabolic systems. A sequence of biochemical reactions termed metabolic branched pathways that occur inside a cell, are of particular interest.Mathematical modelling is used as a tool to examine and analyse the metabolism of viral dynamics for the ends of this research. Dynamic mathematical models provide an important means with which to investigate the cell cycle control system. The derivation of the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is useful in describing and analysing the metabolic network structures of branched flux pathways, as well as enzyme-substrate,reciprocal-action networks which control the cell cycle. Different general and specific factors affecting metabolic rate are identified and explained

- Description: This study investigates the livelihoods impacts of eco-tourism in Hogsback, the extent to which local community members are effectively participating in eco-tourism activities as well as the negative implications of ecotourism in Hogsback. A qualitative research methodology was employed in order to have a deeper understanding of the issues under study. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used to select respondents. In-depth semi structured interviews were used to collect data from 40 respondents and 6 key informants. The study established that eco-tourism activities help mainly individuals rather than the whole community at large and those who benefit; it improves their lives as well as benefiting the economy of the country. This study also found out that the government plays a role to promote development of ecotourism in the community, this is through infrastructure development and providing services for tourism. Lastly the study found out that there are conflicts over ownership of eco-tourism activities, limited funds in promotion of eco-tourism activities and that there is no eco-tourism development strategy. The study recommends that the government of South Africa should design and implement a comprehensive eco-tourism development strategy that puts people at the core.

- Description: Research on athletes has shown that mental skills are an important component of being a successful athlete. The importance of these mental skills is seen in the number of athletes who have formally started training using mental skills training programmes (MST) according to the literature. The study of mental skills in South Africa lags behind other countries like USA, UK and Sweden. This particular study explored the use of mental skills by road running athletes. The study was conducted with six competitive marathon athletes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted as part of an elaborate qualitative methodology design. The data collected from these semi-structured interviews was analysed using thematic analysis. The results show that road running athletes use mental skills that include; mental rehearsal, planning, goal setting and self-talk. The athletes in this research showed the importance of mental skills and it is recommended that formal training in these mental skills will be highly beneficial not only to road running athletes but for all South African sports people in general

- Description: Shelter is a basic human right that was recognised by the South African constitution and this led to the government's partnership with the private sector together with NGO's in responding to the huge housing demand for the poor. Due to the RDP's failure in delivering houses to the poor masses, the government introduced a social housing programme in Walmer, Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The Walmer Link social housing programme has been able to give poor people an alternative than being backyard shack dwellers. The rental complex offers good quality housing with secured features at very low prices based on individual income. This initiative has been able to ease the pressure of providing houses to the poor from government and has also been able to lower poverty levels in the Port Elizabeth area.

- Description: Service delivery and livelihood strategies in informal settlements‟ have been below par as communities find it hard to maintain a suitable standard of living. The provision of basic services, also social and economic upliftment initiatives to the community are very important in transforming Duncan Village: C-Section into a sustainable human settlement. The study analyses the level of service delivery and livelihoods, in-order to meet the required level of service delivery needed to meet the needs of the people in C-Section. Municipal plan(s) such as the Duncan Village Redevelopment Initiative have been adopted by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality with the relevant government, private and public stakeholders onboard. The study involved qualitative and qualitative research methods with interviews, plans and policies being used to investigate the key aims and objectives. The lack of funding and the right number of staff (officials) has had implication on the efficient delivery of services, with the density and the terrain of the study also adding on the challenges facing the delivery of infrastructural service. Inward migration has also had a negative impact on service deliver efforts and this problem needs to be addressed by implementing better regional planning. Data collected also highlights a low literacy level within the community which limits peoples‟ participation and access economic activities which adversely affects their livelihoods. The study suggests that for better service delivery there needs to be better constructed business plans to sort out funding for projects for the area and the municipality has to also invest in the number of official needed to improve or better service delivery. An all round strategy needs to be adopted to improve all facets of life for the people in the study and the settlement as a whole with an aim of livelihood improvements.

- Description: With this dissertation I propose to investigate critical theories dealing with memory and its role in photography. The function of memory is a well discussed and analysed topic within the ambit of historical research. Drawing from theoretical texts by critical theorists, namely, Roland Barthes, Annette Kuhn and Marianne Hirsch, I will critically address the function of memory in the understanding of photography; particularly how photographs have the ability to construct our identity in terms of history and narrative. I will study the content of memory in relation to visual images, focusing on what is remembered, what is suppressed, and finally, what is transformed when viewing an image. By doing so, I will consider whether or not still photographs have the ability to construct the past in a narrative form that is intrinsic to its medium. This consideration will be undertaken with specific reference to the works of contemporary South African artist Lien Botha. Special attention will be directed to her series of work entitled Amendment (2006), a series which permits me in turn, to deal with issues pertaining to memory and “visual narrative” which I have explored in my own professional art practice namely, Memory Boxes, Back Stories, Faces of You and Me, Memories Re-layered and Ghostly Remnants.

- Description: Research reveals that the level as well as the quality of education plays a role in the determination of an individual's intellectual capacity. Substantial differences in quality of education for black and white individuals were experienced in South Africa due to Apartheid. Compared to the traditionally white Private and Model C schools, Township/ DET schools had limited resources, as well as a separate syllabus and examination system, a situation that has not improved substantially since democratisation in 1994. Research on black South African adults with the WAIS-III has confirmed significant influences on IQ in association with exposure to either such advantaged (Private/Model C) schooling, or disadvantaged (Township/DET) schooling. However to date there has been no published research on the use of the Wechsler intelligence tests on a black South African child population similarly stratified for quality of education. Therefore, for the purposes of this study, the latest Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV) was administered to a sample of 36 Grade 7 learners between the ages of 12-13 (mean 13.01 years), stratified for quality of education to form three comparative groups. Data analyses revealed significant differences on the WISC-IV Factor Indices and Full Scale IQ with the English speaking Private/Model C school group performing the best, followed by the Xhosa speaking Private/ Model C school group, and the Xhosa speaking Township/ DET school group performing the worst. This continuum of lowering is understood to occur abreast of a continuum of decreased exposure to relatively advantaged education. These normative indications are considered to have vital implications for the use of the WISC-IV in the South African cross-cultural situation where vastly differential educational opportunities continue to exist.

- Description: This thesis investigates methods of automatic allocation of processes to available processors in a given network configuration. The research described covers the investigation of various algorithms for optimal process allocation. Among those researched were an algorithm which used a branch and bound technique, an algorithm based on graph theory, and an heuristic algorithm involving cluster analysis. These have been implemented and tested in conjunction with the gathering of performance statistics during program execution, for use in improving subsequent allocations. The system has been implemented on a network of loosely-coupled microcomputers using multi-port serial communication links to simulate a transputer network. The concurrent programming language occam has been implemented, replacing the explicit process allocation constructs with an automatic placement algorithm. This enables the source code to be completely separated from hardware considerations

- Description: Introduction: Phosphorus is an especially scarce element in the aquatic environment, yet it is of vital importance to living organisms: the pyrophosphate bond is the basis of biochemical energy transfer, and phosphate groups make up the backbone of the nucleic acids (Wetzel, 1975). An understanding of phosphorus movements and transformations is thus essential to a study of the biological functioning of a lake. The present report describes a study of phosphorus dynamics inSwartvlei, a lake with an extremely low pelagic primary production rate, in the order of 0,15 gC.m⁻².d⁻¹ (Robarts, 1973; Howard-Williams and Allanson, 1978). The littoral phosphorus dynamics of Swartvlei have been discussed in some detail (Howard-Williams, 1977; Howard-Williams and Allanson, 1978), and what follows is an attempt to quantify the changes in phosphorus concentration occurring in the deeper parts of the lake, which comprise some 57% of the total area.

- Description: What we do possess to-day as 'art' a faked music, filled with exotic and showcard effects, that every ten years or so concocted out of the form-wealth of millenia some new "style'' which is no style at all since everyone does as he pleases. A lying plastic that steals from Assyria, Egypt and Mexico indifferently. Yet this and only this, the taste of the "man of the world" can be accepted as the expression and sign of the age. Everything else, everything that sticks to old ideals is for provincial consumption. This is the year 1965 - nearly fifty years since Oswald Spengler published "The decline of the West" The paragraph I have quoted by way of justification for this dissertation is in turn a justiification of the fact that Spengler is as valid today as he was in 1918.
