The teachers’ perceptions of female principal leadership: a case study of two primary schools in the East London district

After 1994, there was an improvement in the employment of females in leadership positions, particularly in the Department of Education. But the female principals are still facing challenges that emanate from them, as well as extrinsic challenges. Studies highlighted leadership traits, leadership styles, the teachers‟ attitudes, prejudice and gender stereotypes that contribute towards female principalship challenges.This study focused on the perceptions of teachers of female principal leadership in two primary schools. Furthermore, it highlighted limitations as well as successes of female principal leader as perceived by the teachers. The qualitative research approach was used to investigate the perceptions of teachers in terms of the limitations and successes of female principal leaders. A case study of two primary schools with six Post Level One teachers across the phases and two Heads of Department (HODs) was conducted. One-to-one semi-structured interviews were used as qualitative research tools to collect data from the teachers. The findings of this study revealed that the female principals demonstrated two sides in their leadership, the positive side and the negative side. The respondents had expectations that the female principals would be more nurturing in character when they encountered personal problems. The respondents became happy when the female principals demonstrate the motherly traits such as warmth, care and love to them when they had personal problems. The female principal demonstrates sympathy and humanity by being there when the teacher is experiencing personal problems and shows interest in how the teacher is feeling. On the other hand, the respondents claimed that they did not feel that quality of motherhood when the female principal was not protecting them against angry parents. The respondents also perceived the female principals as being competent in solving the personal problems of teachers while, on the other hand, they were not able to solve the school problems. The respondents felt that the female principals showed little interest in the learners‟ wellbeing with regard to issues such as bursaries and involvement of social workers.

Effectiveness of TB dot support programme as percieved by community health workers at Inxuba Yethemba and Tsolwana Sub-districts under Chris Hani District

- Description: Background: The National Department of Health realised that its TB control efforts had been ineffective and joined its international counterparts by adopting Directly Observed Treatment short course [DOTs] strategy to fight the spread of TB. DOT is the only globally recognised strategy for effective TB control. This strategy ensures that infectious TB patients are identified and cured using standardised drug combinations. Treatment supporters observe patients as they swallow their drugs daily (SA Tuberculosis control Programme practical guide, 2000). Objectives of the study are: to assess the relevancy and quality of training for DOT supporters at InxubaYethemba and Tsolwana sub – districts,to identify challenges faced by TB DOT supporters during the execution of their duties and to assess satisfaction of TB DOT supporters, with their remuneration packages and other conditions of employment. Method: A quantitative descriptive convenient design was conducted for this study. A self - administered questionnaire was used.The researcher’s targeted sample was 42 participants although only 39 filled in the questionnaires. The questionnaires were personally distributed by the researcher to TB DOT supporters. Items in the questionnaire included the following: Demographic data, working hours per day, distance covered, meeting with managers, salary and remuneration issues and acceptance by community members. Results: The research findings indicated that the TB DOT Supporters are generally not happy with the conditions they are working under. From the 100 percent (n=39) TB DOTS responses, 8 percent (n=11) received a three days training, which is not in line with the Department of Health’s guidelines, and resulted in rendering ineffective delivery of DOT programme. Of the 100 percent ) 23.1 percent (n=9) walk 8kilometres, 51.3 percent percent(n=20) walk 7kilometers, 12.8 percent (n=5) walk 5kilometers, 10.3 percent (n=4) walk 4kilometers. This is against the required distance allowed to travel by foot which is five kilometres. Conclusion:According the results of this study, the effectiveness of TB DOT Supporters is being distracted by many factors, such as: Not having transport for doing home visits, Less number of hours worked per day, few number of community health workers working as TB DOT supporters, not having meetings with the management to discuss their challenges, and most of all not being given a clear explanation as far as their salaries are concern. The mentioned factors render D OT Support programme is rendered in effective at the Chris Hani District. According to Tuberculosis, A training Manual proven for Health Workers (1998:13) the most effective means of controlling TB known to us is a strategy known as Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS). This strategy enables tuberculosis clients to complete their treatment and has four areas of strength when compared to previous TB control strategies in South Africa. Recommendation: The results from this study proves that there is a definite need for improvement of working condition amongst TB Co-ordinators, TB Managers and the TB DOT Supporters. Assessing unwanted early sexual experiences: a South African university study

- Description: This study assessed the prevalence of unwanted early sexual experiences (UESE), of the first year psychology students at the University of Fort Hare, in East London. Of the participants, 65 (31 percent) indicated that they had been exposed to some form of non-contact (56.9percent) or contact (22.3 prercent) UESE before the age of 16 years. It was found that more male (42.5 percent) than female (25.2 percent) students reported being exposed to an UESE. The most common perpetrator reported by the majority of the participants were friends (52.4 percent). Most respondents reported that they were only exposed to the UESE once (55.6 percent). The study found that females were significantly more bothered than males both at the time of the UESE and at the time of completing the questionnaire. Both male and female participants were more bothered by the UESE at the time of the event than they were at the time of completing the questionnaire, which indicates an abatement of symptoms over time. The results indicate that flashbacks of the UESE were the most bothersome experience for both male and female participants at the time of completing the questionnaire.

Stress and traumatic symptoms among police officers: a gender analysis

- Description: This study assessed the extent to which exposure to traumatic events affected the traumatic stress response of male and female police officers. A convenience sample of male and female police officers (N = 66: n Male=46, n Female=20) was surveyed at an Eastern Cape police station. The following instruments were used: 1) Biographical questionnaire 2) PTSS-10 scales 3) The 39-item stress incident scale. Findings of this study indicate that the frequency of exposure to stressful incidents especially for more serious events is significant higher than that of Peltzer (2001) study. The four most frequent stressful incidents experienced by all participants were 1) Finding a corpse after murder (86.4 percent), 2) Responding to a scene involving accidental injury of a child (84.8 percent), .3) Finding a corpse (died of natural causes) (84.8 percent), 4) Duty related violence (non-shooting) (84.8 percent ).The four least frequent incidents experienced by participants were: (1) Response to the depressing social situation (71.2 percent), (2) Dragging of a corpse (74.2 percent), (3) Taking a life in the line of duty (75.8 percent), (4) Violent death of a colleague (77.3 percent ).Female participants results indicated a positive relationship between frequency of stressful incidents and total threat, anxiety, helplessness and PTSS-scale , where male participants’ results indicate no significant relationship between frequency of stressful incidents and total threat, anxiety, helplessness and PTSS-scale. Findings on male participants however indicate a positive relationship between years of service in police, age of police officers and PTSS-scale, while female participants’ results indicated no relationship between years of service in the police, age of police officer and PTSS-scale.
