Assessment of the flocculating efficiency of bioflocculant produced by bacillus sp. Aemreg4 isolated from Tyhume river, Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: Bioflocculants are flocculating substances produced by microorganisms during growth and have recently received considerable attention from researchers; due to their biodegradability, non-toxicity and lack of secondary pollution from degradation intermediates. This study evaluated the efficiency of bioflocculant produced by Bacillus sp. AEMREG4 isolated from Tyhume River. The bacterial identification was through 16S rDNA sequencing; nucleotide sequences were deposited in GenBank as Bacillus sp. AEMREG4 with an Accession number KP406729. The optimum culture conditions for bioflocculant production were an inoculum size of 4% (v/v) and starch as well as yeast extract as sole carbon and nitrogen sources respectively. The addition of CaCl2 enhanced the flocculating activity, at a wide range of pH 4-10 and the highest flocculating activity was reached at an initial pH 8 (80%). A bioflocculant yield of 0.78 g was recovered from 1 L of culture broth. The optimum flocculating activity of 78% was reached at the lowest bioflocculant dosage of 0.1 mg/ml and the presence of divalent cations (Ca2+, Mn2+ and Mg2+) as well as a trivalent cation (Al3+) enhanced flocculating activity. The purified bioflocculant retained more than 70% flocculating activity when subjected to heating at 100 °C for 1 h and maximum flocculating activity of 83% was achieved at both acidic and basic pH values of 3 and 10 respectively. Chemical analysis showed that the bioflocculant is predominantly polysaccharide. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum revealed the presence of carboxyl, hydroxyl and methoxyl groups as the functional moieties and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging of the purified bioflocculant showed its morphological structure as rod-shaped which contributes to its high flocculating efficiency. The high flocculation activity displayed by this bioflocculant indicates its potential suitability for industrial application.Keywords: Bioflocculant, Bacillus sp. AEMREG4, flocculating activity.

- Description: Service delivery challenges have been reported between from the health care industry more especially in the Eastern Cape Province this is due to a number of factors such as job satisfaction, productivity, absenteeism and turnover among healthcare employees and as such it affects employees’ organizational commitment and the quality of healthcare services. The aim of the study was to determine the factors influencing job satisfaction among healthcare professionals at Queenstown Private Hospital in relation to the service delivery. The study was conducted among 30 participants. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data from the participants. Data was then analysed using statistical tools such as pie charts and graphs. The results showed a high level of job satisfaction result in optimum service delivery in the service industry, more especially in the Queenstown private hospital. Almost 90% of participants were satisfied with their jobs, and there was a high level association between job satisfaction and socio-demographic characteristics. Variables such as opportunity to develop, responsibility, patient care and staff relations were found to be significantly influencing job satisfaction and there was a significant positive medium association between job satisfaction and opportunity to develop,responsibility, patient care and staff relations for both clinical and clinical support staff and consequently the employee performance in their jobs, which resulted in the improved delivery of health care in the hospital at all the times. Satisfaction with one’s job can affect not only motivation at work but also career decisions, relationship with others and personal health. Job satisfaction is also an essential part of ensuring high quality care. Dissatisfied healthcare providers give poor quality, less efficient care.

- Description: Local government is the most important sphere of government, given the fact that, it is the closest to the people. It always experiences the service delivery protest by the community residents it serves. This is often due to unfulfilled promises concerning the delivery of services. Often the annual performance results are also unsatisfactory as compared to the agreed upon service delivery agreements. National treasury as a distributor of funding to Municipalities often has to request the return of the unused funds at the end of the financial year period. This is the results of poor managing and planning for the resources at the disposal of the Municipalities. There has been a number of transformational processes over the past few years in the manner that municipalities are being managed and run on a day today basis. This research is focused on the system enhancement for Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality which is situated in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, in particular, has in the 2011 Local government election acquired a metropolitan status, which requires another transformationprocess in the manner it is being managed. At the same time this automatically raises the bar on the service delivery mode and expectations by the communities. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, act 108 of 1996 states how Municipalities are to render services to the communities. And therefore pieces of egislation serves as a guide for the processes and systems in the municipalities at large. This research examined the need for an employee performance management system in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality for the 2012 period. In the review of the literature, there was a number of analysis of issues such as organisation culture which plays an important role in the system implementation and success. And it became evident that, there can be no success of any system in an organisation without the thorough evaluation of the organisational culture. The data was sourced through close ended questionnaires which were distributed to 51 respondents that were identified. These were five Directors, five General Managers, 10 Programme Managers from across the institution, 30 staff members from across all directorates and one portfolio councillor from Corporate service directorate.Each respondent was given a period of one week to respond to the questionnaires. The research provides suggested solutions to the current problems in Municipalities in terms of employee performance management within the organisation. The recommendations provided are not conclusive as the circumstances cannot be the same from one municipality to the other. In order to ensure their sustainability within Local Government, there is need for an employee performance management system to evaluate the performance of all the employees. The research findings identified the leadership role in ensuring the introduction and successful implementation of the employee performance management system, in order to address the service delivery challenges faced by the municipalities.

- Description: The objective of the study was to determine sheep growth performance, fleece weights and wool quality characteristics in the sweet and sourveld communal rangelands of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Data were obtained in 80 ewes aged two to three years, selected in four ecologically different communities. Two communities (Roxeni and Tyabane) were in a sweetveld area and the other two communities (Luzi I and Luzi II) were in a sourveld area. The ewes from Tyabane were nondescript, whereas ewes from Roxeni, Luzi I and Luzi II were crossbred between Merinos and non-descript sheep. Selected ewes were monitored for live weight, body condition scoring and fleece weight during shearing. Wool samples were collected from each ewe and were analysed for fibre diameter, comfort factor, clean yield, wool crimps, staple length, staple strength and the Position of break. Sheep from Roxeni were heavier (P <0.05) (39.9 ± 1.1kg) than sheep from Tyabane (29.8 ± 1.1kg). Sheep from Tyabane had the lightest (P <0.05) fleece weight (1.0 ± 1.1kg) and sheep from Roxeni had the heaviest (3.1 ± 1.1kg). There were no significant differences (P ≥0.05) between body condition scores of sheep in Roxeni and the Luzi communities. The live weights of the two-year old ewes were similar (P ≥0.05) to the three-year old ewes’ live weight. However, the three year old ewes had higher (P <0.05) body condition scores than the two year old ewes. Two year old ewes also had lower (P <0.05) fleece weight than the three years old ewes. Wool from Roxeni, Luzi I and Luzi II had lower fibre diameter (P <0.05) than wool from Tyabane. Roxeni sheep had the highest clean yield (P <0.05) of wool, followed by Luzi I and Luzi II; Tyabane had lowest clean yield percentage of wool. Wool from sheep grazing on sweetveld had a higher (P <0.05) clean yield percentage (74.3 ± 0.7%) than those grazing on sourveld (71.7 ± 0.7%). There were higher staple mid-breaks (69.5 ± 5.2) and lower base-breaks (30.5 ± 5.2) in sweetveld (P <0.05) than in sourveld, 7.5 ± 5.2 and 92.5 ± 5.2 for mid-breaks and lower base-breaks, respectively. It was concluded that sheep raised in the sweetveld and bred with purebred Merino rams had higher performance than the ones reared in the sourveld. The young upgraded ewes had a higher wool quality than the older ewes raised on communal rangelands.

- Description: Water is an indispensible and yet a difficult resource to be renewed, thus water scarcity has become one of the major challenges faced worldwide, with the Southern regions of Africa being the most impacted and affected, especially the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa where rural communities depend on receiving waterbodies that are often negatively impacted by wastewater final effluents. This present study was conducted between August and December 2010 to assess the physicochemical and microbial qualities of the final effluents of peri-urban and rural communities based wastewater treatment plants in the Eastern Cape Province. The physicochemical parameters were determined on site and in the laboratory, while bacteriological qualities were determined using culture based techniques. The virological qualities were determined by molecular methods using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction for the target RNA virus and the conventional polymerase chain reaction for the target DNA virus. For both wastewater treatment plants, the physicochemical parameters ranged as follows: chemical oxygen demand (5.95-45 mg/L); total dissolved solids (114.5-187.0 mg/L); salinity (0.12-0.20 psu); temperature (14.2-25.7oC); pH (6.0-7.6); nitrate and nitrites (1.55-6.7 mg/L and 0.023-1.15 mg/L respectively); biological oxygen demand (3.5-7.8 mg/L); turbidity (1.49-6.98 NTU); and chlorine residual (0-2.97 mg/L). Feacal indicator bacteria counts ranged as follows: feacal coliforms (0-1.25×104 cfu/100 ml); total coliforms (0-3.95×104 cfu/100 ml); and enterococci (0-5.0×103 cfu/100 ml). xviii Seventy five percent of the rural community based plant and 80 percent of the peri-urban community based plant were positive for coxsackie A virus, while hepatitis A virus was detected in all the rural community based plant 80 percent of the peri-urban community based plant. This study suggests the need for intervention by appropriate regulatory agencies to ensure regular monitoring of the qualities of final effluents of wastewater treatment facilities in the Eastern Cape Province and ensure compliance to established guidelines.

- Description: The aim of this study was to determine the ability and proficiency of the newly qualified professional nurses in utilising psychiatric nursing skills at Chris Hani District Psychiatric Health Care Services in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The research method was a qualitative, phenomenological approach. A purposive sample of newly qualified professional nurses and supervisors participated in the study. The data were collected through interviews and focus group discussions, using semi – structured interview guides. Interviews responses were recorded on the interview guide. Data were analysed using the computer software Atlas ti and manually. Positive and negative themes were identified. Ethical considerations were ensured by means of privacy, anonymity and confidentiality. Ethical clearance was obtained from the University of Fort Hare and permission from the Provincial Department of Health and Chris Hani District Health and Mental Health Institution at Queenstown was sought. The findings revealed that newly qualified professional nurses performed well, according to the perception of their supervisors. Newly qualified professional nurses were faced with challenges such as shortage of resources, mental illness not considered as a priority and lack of skills development. The study also revealed that newly qualified professional nurses focussed on the curative aspect of ailments, rather than preventive care. However community health workers (CHW) focussed on the preventive aspect of care. Limitations and recommendations based on the findings of the study are presented.

- Description: Miniaturisation has been the holy grail of mobile technology. The ability to move around with our gadgets, especially the ones for communication and entertainment, has been what semiconductor scientists have battled over the past decades. Miniaturisation brings about reduced consumption in power and ease of mobility. However, the main impediment to untethered mobility of our gadgets has been the lack of unlimited power supply. The battery had filled this gap for some time, but due to the increased functionalities of these mobile gadgets, increasing the battery capacity would increase the weight of the device considerably that it would eventually become too heavy to carry around. Moreover, the fact that these batteries need to be recharged means we are still not completely free of power cords. The advent of low powered micro-controllers and sensors has created a huge industry for more powerful devices that consume a lot less power. These devices have encouraged hardware designers to reduce the power consumption of the gadgets. This has encouraged the idea of wireless power transmission on another level. With lots of radio frequency energy all around us, from our cordless phones to the numerous mobile cell sites there has not been a better time to delve more into research on WPT. This study looks at the feasibilities of WPT in small device applications where very low power is consumed to carry out some important functionality. The work done here compared two rectifying circuits’ efficiencies and ways to improve on the overall efficiencies. The results obtained show that the full wave rectifier would be the better option when designing a WPT system as more power can be drawn from the rectenna. The load also had a great role as this determined the amount of power drawn from the circuitry.
