- Description: The banking industry has been influenced by the evolution of technology and in the process , reduced the cost of transacting and increased the speed of service delivery. This global change has been driven by the development of alternative banking channels from the traditional brick and mortar walls to a utomated teller machines , phone - banking, and now the most recent phenomenon, online banking . The current study, conducted in Lusaka, Zambia investigated the adoption of online banking technology using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with perceived ea se of use, perceived usefulness and trust. T he two constructs perceived ea se of use, perceived usefulness are known to be the most accurate subjective measurement scales for predicting user acceptance . T echnology Acceptance Model (TAM) is the most widely used model and theorizes that if a user fi nds the technology useful , it will influence the user’s attitude positively, thereby increasing the intention to use and finally allowing for adoption. In a cross - sectional survey of 478 participants, and using logistic regression, this study found that perceived usefulness , perceived ease of use and trust were positively associated with users’ intentions to adopt online banking , and these relationships were statistically significant. The findings from this study provide support for the theoretical model. The study further found no contradicting results, and this provides banks in Zambia with an opportunity to grow online banking as the consumer behaviour indicates a willingness and int ention to adopt the technology. The current study was limited to the urban areas of Lusaka which had a population of 3.2 million . Future research may also investigate the impact of culture on the adopti on of online banking technology .

- Description: This thesis investigates whether there is a relationship between education, economic growth and global competitiveness and whether there is a relationship between South Africa’s current throughput rates in institutions of higher education, and its economic growth and global competitiveness. Economic growth is defined as a country’s ability to improve the life of its average citizen based on the strength of its economy. As such, it is increasingly important for a country to assess the factors that contribute to the improvement of their economy, which will ultimately result in its economic growth. Global competitiveness is an indication of how countries are able to provide for their people internally, as well as participate in the international market. To this end, economic growth and global competitiveness are two proxies that can be used to demonstrate the economic wellbeing of a country. Considering that prosperity under economic growth and global competitiveness of a country are driven by its people, one of the aims of this thesis was to investigate whether there is a relationship between education and economic growth and global competitiveness. Considering the recent demand in free education in South Africa, it is also important to understand whether there is a relationship between South Africa’s current throughput rates at higher education institutions and its economic growth and global competitiveness. Bearing in mind the political past which has led to inequality in the country, it is important to understand which types of education contribute to the economy and which types need to be further supported in order to increase the country’s economic productivity. Therefore, an additional aim of the thesis was to determine the relationship between South Africa’s current throughput rates in institutions of higher education, and its economic growth and global competitiveness. To address the aforementioned aims, data were collected from various open access online repositories. All the data were collated and numerous general linear models were constructed and tested to determine the different relationships as per the two aims. The results reveal that secondary school education had the highest impact on economic growth and global competitiveness on a global scale. This could be attributed to the fact that secondary school graduates tend to make up the largest part of the general workforce and as such, would make up a substantial proportion of the economy. Regarding South Africa, the only significant relationships were between green cluster universities (universities that focus on both research and technical training) and global competitiveness. Overall average throughput rates in all academic institutions were low; this could indicate that perhaps there are issues within the higher education system itself that need to be addressed in order to increase the throughput rate. From a managerial perspective, the results of this research stress the importance for the government to further investigate this area of study, as the call for free education becomes more prominent. The low throughput rates seem to suggest that the government is spending substantial amounts of money on students who do not always complete their studies. More research needs to be done to assess the root of the problem in South Africa’s tertiary education system, in order to ensure that this aspect increases its positive contribution towards the country’s economic growth and global competitiveness.

To survive these challenging times, innovation has been identified to play a vital part in finding and developing opportunities for growth and sustaining a competitive edge. It is with no surprise that researchers have long sought to find the root drivers of great innovation. The consensus is that employees are the engine behind innovation and that innovation within an organisation is a direct result of employees engaging in innovative behaviour. Organisations that fail to tap into the creative potential of their employees lose out on benefits and advantages of being innovative organisations. There are various factors that influence employees’ engagement in innovative behaviour, and research into the topic has considered the influence of different factors such as: individual traits, natural inclinations to innovation, motivation, emotions, organisational culture, job requirements, leadership, and social relations. The purpose of this study was to empirically investigate the influence and significance of job satisfaction, perceived colleague support, perceived leadership support, perceived organisational support and job stress on employees’ engagement in innovative behaviour. Based on a review of current literature, the study investigated hypothesised direct and indirect relationships that exist between these factors and that can be used to improve the levels of employees’ engagement in innovation behaviour in Eskom distribution in the Eastern Cape operating unit. The study used on-line questionnaires to survey Eskom Distribution ECOU employees. 141 employees participated in the survey. Majority of the respondents were males and were from Specialised Maintenance and Support department. A large number of the respondents are university and Technikon graduates with half a decade or more in years of service to Eskom. The results of the survey show that there is a significant positive relationship between job satisfaction, colleague support, leadership support organisational support and innovative behavior. From this finding the researcher recommended that management that improves the levels of employee engagement in innovative behaviour by focusing on issues pertaining to job satisfaction, colleague support, leadership support and organisational support.

As new entrants enter the market companies are faced with the threat of market share loss due to increased competition. The increase in the global competitive landscape has a direct impact on the rise of Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A). The growth potential of companies that experienced mergers has resulted in the boom of M&A over the past three decades. In most cases M&A have resulted in job losses and in some demotions. It is no surprise that these transactions result in an anxious and stressed workforce. The merger of the three soft drink bottlers in South Africa namely: CCF, Shanduka and ABI has brought about changes that have left some employees feeling anxious about the future. The combining of different cultures from the different entities can have a negative effect on employees as they would need to adapt to a different culture of the new formed entity. M&A were first introduced in the United States during the eighteenth century and moved into Europe in the nineteenth century. A large body of research has been concentrated in the United States and European markets to understand phenomena relating to such activities in developed countries. M&A activities have also transcended into developing countries. Over the past few years M&A transactions have become a critical gateway for investment in Africa for both local and universal market players. The aim of the study is to understand the employees’ state of mind in the workplace after the merger. The results of the study show that employee morale prior to the merger was higher when compared to post the merger, which implies that employee morale has declined post the merger. The results indicate that after the merger there was a significant decrease in trust, motivation, employee well-being and job satisfaction.

- Description: Prominent German automotive manufacturers had been tampering with emissions for some time before it became public knowledge in September 2015. It is then that that the term ‘Dieselgate’ was coined in reference to the scandal. As the scandal became public knowledge, manufacturers accused of emissions cheating faced challenges on several fronts, including legal, financial and environmental. While the ‘backlash’ as a result of the scandal was apparent in other countries, it was not as apparent in South Africa. This research paper set out to explore the impact that the Dieselgate scandal had in South Africa in terms of customer equity. Data analysis was undertaken using a two-pronged approach. The first of these was analysis of vehicle sales data using a paired t-test. This was to understand whether sales had seen a decline pre-, as well as post-scandal. - Description: Prominent German automotive manufacturers had been tampering with emissions for some time before it became public knowledge in September 2015. It is then that that the term ‘Dieselgate’ was coined in reference to the scandal. As the scandal became public knowledge, manufacturers accused of emissions cheating faced challenges on several fronts, including legal, financial and environmental. While the ‘backlash’ as a result of the scandal was apparent in other countries, it was not as apparent in South Africa. This research paper set out to explore the impact that the Dieselgate scandal had in South Africa in terms of customer equity. Data analysis was undertaken using a two-pronged approach. The first of these was analysis of vehicle sales data using a paired t-test. This was to understand whether sales had seen a decline pre-, as well as post-scandal. Furthermore, customer service and quality of service in the online shopping space tends to be relatively different to customer service and quality experienced at a traditional retail store. Therefore, understanding customer service and quality of service within the online retail space is also a critical area to be researched. The aim of this study is thus is to assist retailers and managers to better understand customer service quality of online shopping platforms and how these online shopping platforms perform in terms of its reliability, assurance, tangibility, empathy, and responsiveness dimensions of service quality. An empirical study, consisting of a questionnaire was conducted amongst 88 South African males and females from the various generational cohorts who utilise online shopping platforms. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the service quality experiences of customers who make use of online shopping platforms. The key findings indicated that reliability, tangibility and empathy are the key determinants affecting a customer’s intention to purchase from an online shopping platform. Individuals make daily financial decisions about expenditures and savings. In environments where resources are scarce poor financial decisions have high impact on the quality of life and future access to resources. People are not adequately educated with regards to finance and wealth creation, save too little for retirement, overspend and tend to purchase items that are not prioritised for the household. Due to limited empirical research, it is clear that new research into the effect of financial literacy on the relationship between financial behaviour and financial well-being on budget intentions is required. This study was anchored to two theories, namely the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), intended to explain all behaviors in which people have the ability to exert self-control and the Trans-Theoretical Model of Behaviour Change (TTM) that could be used to change people’s financial behaviour. The problem being explored is that the mismanagement of funding for beneficiaries at higher education institutions. NSFAS has begun to increasingly make cash payouts available to beneficiaries yet there is not enough empirical evidence to suggest that the beneficiaries possess adequate personal finance management skills or they are financially literate to being able to better manage their finances. When the beneficiaries are not adequately skilled regarding personal finance management skills, they could misuse such funds and this could result in these beneficiaries failing to complete their studies. This study contributed to the identified knowledge gap by investigating the mediating effect of financial literacy on the relationship between financial behaviour and financial well-being on budget intentions among South African university students. This study included quantitative research methods and questionnaires were used as the primary means of collecting the data. The sample included 204 participants from the University of Fort Hare. The final sample yielded a total response rate of 81.6%. A cross sectional research design was used for this study. Convenience sampling was used in this study. The researcher made use of student leaders to distribute and collect questionnaires. This study included 14 hypotheses. The dependent variables included Budget Intentions and Financial Literacy. The independent variables included Financial Well-being and Financial Behaviour. Self-control as a financial behaviour predicted university students’ budget intentions. Individuals with better self-control were more likely to forgo indulgences and focus on the long-term goals, thereby sticking to a budget. Optimism significantly predicted budget intentions of university learners. People who tend to engage in deliberate thinking more often are more likely to better manage their personal finances through budgeting. Individuals who have more positive financial attitude were more satisfied with their financial situation implying that they undertake planning and budgeting as far as finance issues are concerned. Financial socialisation from a parental perspective significantly influenced university students’ financial behaviour, namely, financial teaching, monitoring and modelling. People with better self-control are more likely to practise saving in almost every income flowing to them. Financial behaviour, particularly, deliberating thinking significantly predicted financial literacy. Positive financial behaviours such as being financial literate such as a reduction in day-to-day expenses were found to be associated with lower financial anxiety levels. Financial behaviours including positive financial attitude significantly predicted financial literacy. Individuals who had their financial issues monitored by parents for the purpose of earning advice and tips on financial matters were positively behaving pointing to the notion that they were financial literate and knowledgeable. The implication of the study is that management of institutions of higher learning should encourage students to practise self-control behaviour regarding their finances in order to improve budget intentions. It is also recommended that the Universities management should design short courses where students can be trained on or made aware of the importance of self-control as much as good financial behaviour is concerned.

Industry 4.0 is said to be unlike the previous three industrial revolutions, it is a distinct one of speed, extent and systems impact, characterised by a major disruption to all sectors of business, governments and individuals globally. Industry’s such as insurance, is considered conservative and slow to change, as such the industry has never been quick to adapt to technological advancements. One thing however, that is certain about Industry 4.0 and predicted by many, is its significant impact on jobs in the world as robotics; automation and artificial intelligence become more abundant. This phenomenon has a direct impact on South Africa, which is currently strained by challenges such as infrastructure constraints, political instability, high levels of unemployment, rising costs, and shortages of skills, the loss of further jobs should raise an alarm of concern for government and the private sector alike. The outcomes of the extensive analysis of future studies practice and theory in this research study gives credibility to the argument that the manner in which planning is taking place for the future of the Industry 4.0 in the South African insurance industry context, requires significant adjustments. Inayatullah’s (2008) six pillars of futures studies was employed as an instrument to to guide the mapping of the present and future, further deepening and broadening the future through the development of scenarios, and, finally, transforming the future by narrowing it down to the preferred. In order to achieve the preferred, Future Vision of the insurance industry of South Africa towards 2030 is up to the insurance industry of South Africa, in collaboration with public and private sectors to determine the path to be followed in the decisions surrounding the embrace, acceptance and implementation of Industry 4.0 for the greater good of all, as the country moves towards progression, financial inclusion and sustainable development.

A quantitative research design was adopted to conduct the study. The data was derived from a questionnaire which the research assistants administered to patients in a number of surgical clinics in the hospital. Across-sectional sample of 350 patients, who were making their first follow-up visits after having previously been admitted to the hospital to undergo surgical procedures, was obtained by making use of convenience sampling. The researcher made use of the modified SERVQUAL scale for hospital services in order to measure the extent to which the participants agreed with statements pertaining to five specific dimensions of the quality of service, namely, tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. The overall gap score was negative (-0.52), which indicates that the respondents perceived that the quality of healthcare which the hospital provided was unsatisfactory. Although the gap scores for each of five of the dimensions of quality were negative, the two dimensions whose gap scores reflected the highest levels of dissatisfaction were reliability (-0.66) and responsiveness (-0.63). The findings of this study could assist the Department of Health of the Eastern Cape Provincial Government to appreciate the perceptions of the public of the quality of healthcare which the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex provides to patients. The recommendations which are made on the basis of the findings of this study could assist policymakers and members of the senior management of the hospital complex to formulate policies which result in substantial improvements in the quality of healthcare in the hospital complex. Further research is still needed to identify the factors which adversely affect the performance of the staff of the hospital and limit their ability to provide satisfactory healthcare consistently to patients.

Although the gap scores for each of five of the dimensions of quality were negative, the two dimensions whose gap scores reflected the highest levels of dissatisfaction were reliability (-0.66) and responsiveness (-0.63). The findings of this study could assist the Department of Health of the Eastern Cape Provincial Government to appreciate the perceptions of the public of the quality of healthcare which the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex provides to patients. The recommendations which are made on the basis of the findings of this study could assist policymakers and members of the senior management of the hospital complex to formulate policies which result in substantial improvements in the quality of healthcare in the hospital complex. Further research is still needed to identify the factors which adversely affect the performance of the staff of the hospital and limit their ability to provide satisfactory healthcare consistently to patients.

The results from the data collection generally showed how aspects of flexible working like telecommuting, flexitime and homeworking ultimately helped the employees to achieve a Work-Life Balance - by primarily influencing how they balanced their work, home, and personal commitments. Importantly, the study also identified pitfalls of flexible working; like employees feeling isolated and the pressure to perform. Potential mitigating efforts identified in the study included, providing more company support and education for flexible working initiatives. The study concluded by acknowledging the limitations of the study, which included time constraints and the small population, and sample size of the study. In its conclusion, the study identified recommendations for future studies like: increasing the population and sample size, and devoting more time to the study, for more generalized and conclusive findings.

In today’s competitive environment, innovation is a driver of change and organisations that resist that change are in danger. Regardless of the scope of the resource pool and the organisational excellence, companies cannot shield themselves from change. While change comes with risk and uncertainty, it also presents opportunity. The choice to innovate must be supported by actions that foster an environment in which people are comfortable to be innovative. An organisational climate that inspires members to engage in innovation is vital for the innovation efforts of an organisation to be successful. The purpose of the study was to determine the leadership practices that can be adopted to build and sustain a` work environment that fosters innovation. To achieve this objective a conceptual model was constructed from literature and the relationship between six constructs was tested, namely, organisational culture, leadership style, leadership behaviour, reward and recognition, training and development, and a climate for innovation. To test the conceptual model, a questionnaire was sent to 82 participants working in the media and entertainment industry. The results of the data analysis highlighted that the organisational culture and the leadership behaviour have a significant positive relationship with the climate for innovation. Positive changes in the organisational culture and leadership behaviour are likely to lead to a more conducive organisational climate for innovation.

Colonialism included colonial knowledge and denied African practices and existence. For centuries African philosophy was excluded and marginalised, which caused much pain and inhumanity. Higher education institutions remain detached from the developmental changes of African communities. Silence in academic disciplines was overwhelming Eurocentric / Westernised. Transformation of Higher Education curriculum in South Africa requires inclusion of African philosophy, and acknowledgement and respect for other cultures’ values, languages and knowledge. Educators play a pivotal role in transferring knowledge to students and producing the leaders for the future. Colonisation has ruled for decades and the effects thereof are still felt in various aspects of life. The education platform can break colonialism and if allowed, bring restoration to indigenous people. South African universities can contribute to society in transforming and decolonising curriculum and giving indigenous people and knowledge their rightful place. An education system free from colonialism positions students to add value to society as their worldviews are taken into consideration. This paper investigates the factors that could lead to a decolonised curriculum. Higher Education institutions have a role to play in ensuring a University free form colonial power and inequality. Decolonisation of the intellectual landscape will result in the decolonisation of the mind.

Traditional Dealerships’ Operational Capacity to Sell Electric Vehicles

- Description: The global automotive industry faces an emerging turning point where an unceasing dependence on costly fossil fuels and a growing concern over global warming is driving the industry to form new possibilities. A major challenge for decision makers is to assure that the consumer market is informed about both the advantages and disadvantageous of electric vehicle technology. A significant amount of research has been done on both the operational ability of electric vehicles and consumer resistance and preferences towards new technology and the marketing of electric vehicles. Given the retail relationship between key industry stakeholders such as the Original Equipment Manufacturers, franchised dealership network and potential electric vehicle consumers, the transition towards new electric vehicle technology represents an important strategic realignment for dealerships in order to sell electric vehicles along with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and questions their operational capacity to do so successfully. The primary data was collected from a sample of forty respondents by means of an online questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed from literature and using similar extracts from other electric vehicle consumer resistance studies questionnaires. An email containing a Universal Resource Link (URL) to the questionnaire was sent and by means of snowball sampling, a representative sample of forty-eight respondents participated in the study who fully completed all the sections of the questionnaire. Interviews were conducted with Senior Management of local dealerships in the Port Elizabeth area. The interviews were executed in the same method as a ‘walk-in’ potential customer. Participation therefore was based on the willingness, readiness and availability of management. Three dealerships who already sell electric vehicles as well as two dealership who still only sell traditional internal combustion engine vehicles participated in the interviews. In addition, the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) commented on the strategic realignment of the South African industry as a whole. The results indicated that the majority of respondents believed that electric vehicles were a suitable alternative to the traditional internal combustion engine vehicle and were willing to personally contribute to improved sustainable mobility. Uncertainty remained with consumers and there was unwillingness to purchase and electric vehicle within the next five years. Electric vehicles were also believed to perform better but there was uncertainty about the return that would be achieved from investment in an electric vehicle despite the reduction in their carbon footprint and the associated image boost with family and colleagues. Furthermore, there appeared to be an alignment amongst the interviewees that South Africa does not face and immediate threat in terms of electric vehicles as the anticipated tipping point is envisaged to be in the region of 2030 onwards, however NADA as a professional industry body still warns that this is not a set point in time and that market forces could change the outlook and adaption dramatically.

Informed by organisational role theory, this research investigated the change management programme of a specific public entity as a case study, and analysed the nature of the role conflict that change champions experienced during a specific organisational change. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four change champions, the change coordinator and the Executive Director Corporate Services. The organisational documents that relate to change management were also consulted with a view to providing background information and an overview of the change management programme. A deductive thematic analysis approach was used to analyse the data. A coding framework was developed prior to the collection of data, and was used for the identification of theoretical codes and themes in the data. The following codes were developed and explored as types of role conflict: role ambiguity, person role conflict, role strain, role overload and role incompatibility. In terms of the findings, this study confirmed that change champions did experience role conflict during organisational change, mainly due to various expectations that come from different role senders. In the light of these findings, it was recommended that senior managers could reduce the incidents of role conflict by training change champions, introducing an orientation programme for new change champions, consider their personal values when appointing them, and allocating sufficient time for change champions to fulfil this additional role. This study has contributed to the body of knowledge by drawing on role theory and applying it to change management, in order to provide insight on the role of change champions during the organisational change, and in particular the role conflict that they experienced.

The socio-economic dynamics of the region or country that the company operates from, as well as the pressures those stakeholders tend to apply, have a bearing on the direction that the CSR development takes. Mirvis and Googins (2006) described the CSR developmental path followed by international companies. Before that Carroll (1991) had suggested a developmental pyramid that suggested that philanthropy represented the highest level of CSR development. This pyramid was later revised by Visser (2005) in order to suit the African environment. In South Africa CSR development is mainly driven by legislation through the BEE Act of 2003. This has resulted in the birth of industry charters that guide the development of CSR in different industries. To fulfil the requirements of the charter and score vital B-BBEE points, companies have to engage with both internal and external stakeholders, holistically. One such industry is the telecommunications industry, which formed the basis for this research, with special emphasis on the mobile telecommunications industry. The research set out to explore how the industry charter and company practices compared with the existing literature on CSR. The aim of this research was therefore to analyse the existing CSR practices in the mobile telecommunication industry in South Africa, where the B-BBEE Act plays a pivotal role in influencing practice. Using publically available documents, this research conducted an analysis of the B-BBEE components in the telecommunications charter as the catalyst to development of CSR in the South African mobile telecommunications industry, with the three dominant companies, - MTN, Vodacom and Cell C – being utilised as case studies. Key research findings were that transformation is still low in terms of equitable gender and racial representation at the top management level. The industry charter attempts to address these and other social challenges and economic problems. However, it does not address ecological issues that may emanate from the industry operations. Therefore, a CSR assessment framework that addresses all stakeholders for sustainable economic development is proposed.

In phase two the framework is evaluated by conducting in-depth interviews. The purpose of phase two is to identify the strategic aspects that are considered in the South African business context. The literature overview identified twelve strategic aspects for consideration when making capital structure decisions, namely business risk, control, flexibility, growth rate, long-run viability, management constraints, management conservatism, market conditions, rating agencies, size, taxation and transactional cost. The framework of twelve strategic aspects to be considered when making capital structure decisions was empirically evaluated by means of interviews. The interview responses regarding the initial twelve strategic aspects were coded and three themes emerged, namely critical strategic decision-making factors (business risk, financial flexibility, tax advantage, and volatility of earnings cash flows); factors relating specifically to markets in South Africa (growth rate, long-term viability, market conditions, credit rating, and transaction costs) and autonomy of the decision-making process (control, management constraints, managerial conservatism, and size). During the interview process, it was indicated that the autonomy of the decision-making process theme (control structure, management constraints, managerial conservatism and business size) do not form part of the strategic capital structure decision-making process in their companies and should be omitted. The interviewees highlighted four additional themes that may affect their capital structure decisions, namely government interference in the market and in the local business; Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) rating; political stability, and state capture. The study suggests a proposed framework consisting of six themes that can be used to guide capital structure decisions in South Africa businesses.

The mission of the COEGA Development Corporation (CDC) is to provide a competitive investment location supported by value added business services that ultimately enable socio-economic development. The Entity is mandated to develop and operate the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), which is located adjacent to the modern deep-water port facility, Port of Ngqura, developed and owned by Transnet National Ports Authority. The CDC attracts investors from all over the world and in different business sectors through investment promotion as well as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The Coega Development Corporation whose core mandate is to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) struggles to adopt innovative information technologies expeditiously, which is problem for the organization. The organization currently has Information Technology (IT) systems and applications such as the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and other IT systems that have been used, but there has been failure in maximizing the IT capabilities implemented internally. Employees are not understanding and seeing the benefit of using IT systems and there is no integration of systems within the CDC. This paper aims to acquire underlying knowledge of how IT is adopted in private sector organizations and further explore what factors impact its adoption. The main objective of this study was to propose a framework for adopting an optimizing technology usage within the Coega development Corporation to enhance productivity and efficiency. The study focused on the effect of components such as top management involvement, management styles, innovative organization culture, end user training, innovation diffusion, championship and knowledge management. In conclusion, this study showed the importance of optimizing technology, within the Coega Business Center. The author presented and made Recommendations on how to integrate the independent variables identified can influence the optimization of technology. v The proposed conceptual IT innovation adoption and optimization framework is a contribution to theory. This framework presents a detailed list of internal factors that influence IT adoption and optimization in government sector organizations such as the Coega Development Corporation. The author inferences that each factor within this framework signifies its importance and must be considered by organizations while adopting innovation technologies.
