The electrochemical synthesis of 3-tert-Butyl-4-Methoxybenzaldehyde

- Description: This project was concerned with the evaluation of three potential synthetic routes for 3-tert-butyl-4-methoxybenzaldehyde, a useful fine chemical intermediate and ingredient in many sunscreen agents. The three synthetic routes all involved the selective oxidation of the 3-tert-butyl-4-methoxytoluene to the desired benzaldehyde by (a) catalytic air oxidation, (b) direct electrochemical oxidation, and (c) indirect electrochemical oxidation. In order to decide whether catalytic oxidation should precede the alkylation of 4-methoxytoluene, the selective oxidation using the well-known cobalt(II)- bromide catalyst system in acetic acid solutions were investigated with the view to determine whether increased electron density on the aromatic ring improves selectivity to the desired benzaldehyde or not. In addition, the effect of various important reaction variables was also investigated. These studies showed that increased electron density, hence increased substitution, increases the desired benzaldehyde selectivity. In addition, while reaction conditions such as reaction temperature, catalyst concentration, water concentration, etc. may be optimised for maximum 3-tert-butyl-4- methoxybenzaldehyde yields (~80 percent), such yields can only be achieved at relatively low (<40 percent) alkoxytoluene conversions. The direct electrochemical oxidation of 3-tert-butyl-4-methoxytoluene was investigated in methanol solutions containing various supporting electrolytes and using constant current electrolysis with the intention of optimizing the production of 3-tert-butyl-4-methoxybenzyl dimethyl acetal which can later be hydrolyzed using sulfuric acid to the 3-tert-butyl-4-methoxybenzaldehyde. In this study, various parameters such as supporting electrolyte and electrodes were studied. Previous studies showed undoubtedly that methanol as a solvent gave better results amongst the rest of the solvents. Indirect route was also studied as a method of synthesizing 3-tert-butyl-4- methoxybenzaldehyde and compared to the direct electro synthesis.

The number of AIDS orphans in South Africa has risen out of all proportion and is causing existing health and social structures to become stretched in providing care to this vulnerable population of children. The objectives of this study are to explore and to describe the lived experience of children living in a township who have become AIDS orphans and to develop broad guidelines for Primary Health Care Nurses (PHCN’s), related professionals and partners involved in the care of AIDS orphans living in a township. The theoretical grounding of this study is found in Kotze’s Theory on Nursing Accompaniment (Kotzé, 1998:3). The proposed research design was based upon a qualitative study using an explorative, descriptive, contextual and phenomenological strategy of inquiry. Data was collected by means of in-depth interviews from a purposively selected sample and then analysed using the steps of qualitative data analysis proposed by Tesch (in Creswell, 1994). Guba’s model was used to assess the trustworthiness of the qualitative data. Based upon the findings, guidelines were developed to assist PHCN’s related professionals and partners involved in the care of AIDS orphans living in a township. Through this study the goal of the researcher was to give a voice to AIDS orphans living in a township and to represent accurately their lived experience.

- Description: One of the greatest challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa, which incorporates South Africa, is the AIDS pandemic. The devastation wrought by this disease is unsurpassed in recent times. The health and social development structures, already overburdened, are totally overwhelmed by the needs of povertystricken households and communities affected by AIDS. Caregivers attempting to support those affected and infected are also facing unique challenges and demands, particularly relating to dealing with the large numbers of deaths due to this disease. Experiences for these caregivers are likely to be varied, ranging on a continuum from positive to negative, for instance, the recovery of patients versus the death of patients. The objectives of this study are to explore and describe the lived experiences of caregivers working with AIDS patients, particularly patients who die from this disease whilst resident in a formal institution. The research is based on a qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual research design. The study is grounded in a phenomenological approach to inquiry. Caregivers working fulltime in a formal institution caring for patients who are dying from AIDS were interviewed in an in-depth, unstructured manner in order to gather spontaneous, rich descriptions of their experiences. Through this study the researcher wants their voices to be heard, the potential richness of their reflections acknowledged and the generated data to be applied to the benefit of the field of HIV/AIDS – both for staff and patients. Thirteen in-depth, unstructured interviews provided saturated data, which was then transcribed and coded to yield the central and sub-themes that were identified in this study. One central theme identified the fact that in their daily duties (at their place of work), caregivers experience various challenges as a result of having to deal with the death and dying of their patients suffering from AIDS. These caregivers face the death of their patients daily, from a disease that causes untold suffering to the patient, family members and to the caregivers themselves, who wish they could prevent the anguish, the pain and the inability of the medical profession to do more than they are at present towards curing this disease. ii By describing the lived experiences of these caregivers by means of the research interviews, the researcher gained a clear picture of the AIDS environment. The information shared by the participants formed the foundation of the broad guidelines that were formulated. These are intended to provide support for the caregivers centering around the equipping of mentors of the caregivers, to enable them to support the caregivers in their daily task of caring for patients dying from AIDS. These caregivers, thus supported, will then be in a position to provide optimal care for these dying patients. These broad guidelines are intended to provide support by focusing firstly on the physical environment in which these caregivers work; secondly in providing education for the caregivers to enable them to fulfill their duties, and thirdly to provide adequate counselling to ensure that they do not succumb to caregiver fatigue/burnout, a constant threat in this type of environment. The study concludes with recommendations regarding the areas of nursing practice, education and research.

- Description: HIV/AIDS is a pandemic infecting and affecting millions of people worldwide. South Africa is also severely affected by this disease. Because hospitals cannot cope with patients admitted daily especially with the influx caused by HIV/AIDS patients, the government has introduced home-based care of people living with HIV/AIDS. Amongst those who practice home-based care are the volunteers. This study is aimed at exploring and describing the experiences of volunteers involved in home-based care of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Lusikisiki Magisterial district in the former Transkei area of the Province of the Eastern Cape. The researcher used a qualitative methodology with the aim of finding out what it is like to be a volunteer involved in home-based care in a rural area. The data was collected by means of semi-structured one-to-one interviews or guided interviews. A total sample of thirteen research participants was acquired through purposive as well as snowball sampling. The interviews were guided by a number of broad question themes. Data was analyzed using Tesch’s framework of data analysis as described in Creswell (1994). The researcher used Guba’s model as outlined in Krefting (1991) to ensure trustworthiness of the research findings. A literature control was undertaken to find out what other researchers and authors say about the issues raised by the study. There were five themes that came out of the data analysis process and these themes are: o The experiences of volunteers with home-based care. o Factors facilitating the work of volunteers. o Problems encountered by volunteers. o Possible solutions to problems encountered. o Views of volunteers regarding home-based care. These broad themes were further reduced into sub-themes and categories. Based on the discussion of themes, sub-themes, and categories, some research findings were presented. The discussion of the themes, sub-themes and categories was supported by verbatim quotations from the participants. On the basis of research findings, conclusions and recommendations were made.

The inquiry-based Family Maths professional development programme, offered by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, attempts not only to support the transformative education practices targeted by the South African National Department of Education, but also to extend them beyond the school walls to the community at large. This study investigates the extent to which the Family Maths professional development programme develops facilitators’ ability to implement inquiry-based learning. It also seeks to explore which aspects of the programme are effective in developing an inquiry-based approach. The research undertaken is an empirical study of 39 facilitators and uses both qualitative and quantitative methods. The facilitators’ inquiry beliefs and ability to implement inquiry learning was measured by means of questionnaires, observation schedules and interviews. As the ‘teacher as facilitator of inquiry-based teaching and learning’ is a requirement of all South African teachers, the findings of this research should make a meaningful contribution to the field of mathematics teacher education in the South African context.

- Description: This paper traces the construction of African identities in A Reasonable Man (South Africa 1999), Chikin Biznis: The Whole Story (South Africa 1998), Fools (South Africa/France 1997), Hyènes (1992), Le cri du coeur (Burkina Faso/France 1994), Pièces d'Identités (France/Congo/Belgium 1998), Une couleur café (France 1997), and Xala (Senegal 1975) based on an analysis of race, ethnicity, tradition, modernization, Westernization, and cultural hybridity theories; as a way of contextualizing African history in general, this paper also explores the significance of colonialism, postcolonialism, and forms of neo-colonialism. I argue that nineteenth century perceptions of “race” that arose during the Enlightenment era are mistaken. Instead, African identities presented in film should be re-conceived based on concepts of ethnicity and culture and not simplistic racial constructions—for example “white,” “black,” or “mulatto” to name a few—since such interpretations inevitably surrender to problematic analysis. However, I also contend that neither a typical conception of fixed identities nor cultures can be applied to the understanding of contemporary African identities expressed in African film. The conception of African identities can and ought to be reconsidered as a fluid, social construction based on changing historical phenomena. As an alternative, I suggest that tradition, modernization, and Westernization processes contribute to the overall fluidity of contemporary African identities, which can be elucidated by cultural hybridity theories. Therefore, I ultimately propose that the hybridization of African identities is specifically linked to forms of modernization and Westernization—the practice of Western medicine, beliefs in monogamy, and entrepreneurial aspirations—that have also been filtered through traditional African value systems such as polygamy, traditional healing, patriarchy, communitarianism, and traditional religions within various African communities depicted in African film. Thus, a fixed “African” category that we strive to define—against either Western or African points of reference—is actually neither a fully Westernized nor entirely African distinction but a hybridized identity of traditional, modernized, and Westernized elements.

- Description: The objective of the present research was to establish the biomechanical, physiological and perceptual responses of male operators to dynamic pushing tasks. The pushing tasks were performed using an industrial pallet jack with varying load/frequency combinations, in a controlled laboratory environment. Thirty healthy male subjects comprised the sample. Experimental procedures were conducted utilising the Chatillon ™ Dynamometer to measure force output in the initial, sustained and ending phases. The K4b2 Ergospirometer was used to assess physiological responses (heart rate and oxygen consumption [V02])' Nine recorded forces and nine experimental conditions formed the basis of this study, with subjects required to push three loads (200kg, 350kg, 500kg) at three frequencies (1120 sec, 1/40 sec, 1/60 sec) at a speed of 3.6km.h-1 over 14 metres on a co-efficient of friction controlled walkway for six minutes. Gait analysis, along with perceptions of exertion (,Central ' and 'Local' RPE) were collected during the third and sixth minutes of each condition . Body discomfort and contribution were identified upon completion of each condition. The results demonstrated that load and frequency interacted to influence responses within each domain. Increasing loads required increased force output during each stage of the push, which had a concomitant effect on physiological and perceptual responses. Significant differences arose between the initial, sustained and ending forces for each load, showing the direct relationship between load and force exertion. The combination of heaviest load/quickest frequency required the greatest physiological output, exceeding recommended guidelines for heart rate, V02 and energy expenditure responses. Intermediate combinations required moderate and acceptable energy cost. Linear relationships were established between heart rate and oxygen consumption , as well as between load and V02 , thus providing industrial practitioners an opportunity to evaluate task demands in situ. The combination of high forces and elevated physiological responses increased the subjective rating of the condition. The results emphasise the need to holistically consider all contributing factors in a dynamic pushing task. Dynamic pushing tasks place biomechanical, physiological and perceptual demands on the human operator, which must be minimised in order to ensure that this form of manual materials handling becomes sustainable in the long term.

- Description: Optimal management of a chronic disease, like asthma, requires the active participation of patients. To achieve this, patients require education about asthma. Many of the recommended components of asthma care and management might not be effective without adequate patient education. Pharmacists in community, hospital and clinic practice are well placed to provide continued information and reinforcement of key messages, in order to improve compliance with medication and the outcomes of asthma management plans. Pharmacists may be able to increase medication adherence with patient counselling and monitoring systems and by facilitating communication with physicians. However, regardless of this, it remains uncertain whether pharmacist-patient interactions improve patient outcomes, and in spite of recommendations for teamwork and a multidisciplinary approach in the education of asthma patients, medical doctors and nurses are still largely responsible for carrying out the greatest part of patient education. The objectives of this study were therefore to determine the impact of pharmaceutical care services at a primary health care level on the management and well-being of asthmatic patients; to determine the effect of complex or multi-faceted pharmaceutical interventions, in patients with asthma, on lung function, asthma knowledge, attitudes and perceived self-management efficacy, asthma related quality of life and asthma control; and to determine the extent to which pharmacotherapeutic interventions, with regards to medication changes and dosage changes, are accepted and implemented by doctors. A randomised-control study was conducted at a primary health care clinic in the Eastern Cape. A total of 120 patients were allocated to two groups of sixty patients each (a Control Group and an Intervention Group). Baseline values were measured and follow-up interviews and post-intervention data collection were conducted three months afterwards for each group. Patients in the Control Group were attended to by the clinic staff as usual. Patients in the Intervention Group were educated on their disease by a pharmacist. The use of a customised 500ml plastic bottle as a spacer was suggested and each patient’s medication was evaluated against the Standard Treatment Guidelines for the management of asthma in adults at the primary health care level and where necessary, prescribing recommendations were made. Following assessment of the medication regimens of the patients in the Intervention Group, a total of 49 prescribing recommendations were made, of which 73 percent were accepted by both the doctor and patient. After educating the patients in the Intervention Group on inhaler technique, a significant improvement in technique was observed at the 3-month follow-up assessment (p<0.05). Using a short form of the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ(S)), a significant improvement post-intervention in mean total quality of life score (p<0.05) and mean average quality of life score (p<0.05) in the Intervention Group, were demonstrated. An improvement in mean activity limitation score in the Intervention Group post-intervention was also recorded for the activity limitation subscale of the AQLQ(S) (p<0.05). On measuring changes in asthma related knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy, using a questionnaire (KASE-AQ), a significant improvement in mean knowledge score in the Intervention Group after the intervention (p<0.05) was also shown. With regards to lung function, both vital capacity (percent FVC) and expiratory flow volumes (percent FEV1) improved significantly in the Intervention Group (p<0.05). This study therefore demonstrated that multi-faceted pharmacist interventions, including medication assessment, asthma education, education on inhaler technique and the provision of medication aids in the form of spacers, can significantly improve the management of asthma patients and improve their well-being and quality of life.

This investigation was set within both qualitative a quantitative framework. Five schools where some of teachers were affected by redeployment in Port Elizabeth were investigated. Purposive sampling was used for selecting the respondents for this study and also for selecting these five schools. Questionnaires and interviews were used for the collection of data. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of redeployment of teachers in Port Elizabeth schools. The findings revealed that there is needs to upgrade the qualification of the teachers, that effective human resource planning should result in the involvement of teachers when decision making takes place, especially issues that affect them directly such as iv redeployment and that provincial Department of Education and teachers organizations like South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU), National Professional Teachers Organization of South Africa (NAPTOSA), South African Teachers Union (SATU) should work closely in the area of redeployment. This topic is useful for all who are in the teaching profession, whether as redeployed teachers or as practicing professionals. A number of conclusions and recommendations, in line with the findings of the study were made. Recommendations on how redeployment of teachers could be conducted in Port Elizabeth schools were presented. An attempt has also been made to include items that are of special interest to South African teachers in general and Port Elizabeth teachers in particular.

TPM is a combination of operations and maintenance activities and is performed by operators under their own authority and is called “autonomous maintenances”. The author has tested the degree of implementation of TPM by using a sevenstep TPM implementation model this highlighted an absence of TPM in the organisation investigated. TPM is a relatively new concept in the South African automotive industry and has not been fully accepted by management as a solution to the maintenance problems in the organisation. Due to a long implementation period and the difficulty in measuring the benefits of the TPM program for the organisation TPM tends not to be implemented by companies. The research studies several maintenance philosophies each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The benefits that arise from the implementation of an effective TPM philosophy were explored. The development of an effective improved model for the implementation of TPM was investigated. Maintenance engineers and managers in any organisation can use this model to implement an effective TPM program. The seven-step TPM implementation model formed the basis for the compilation of a questionnaire. A survey was conducted to determine if an absence of TPM existed in a plastic painting plant. The results from the survey were drawn up and recommendations to further develop a model for the implementation of TPM was put forward.

- Description: The process of extradition is a vital component of International Criminal Law as a means of ensuring the suppression and prevention of international crimes. It is the internationally accepted method used by states to surrender an offender back to the state where the alleged offence was committed so that such offender can be tried and punished. Without such process, and with the ease of modern global travel, offenders would, in all likelihood be able to escape prosecution and punishment. Most organized democratic societies recognize that the suppression of crime is necessary for peace and order in society and that extradition is an effective tool to be used to bring to justice a fugitive attempting to evade the law by fleeing to another country. What follows is a discussion, firstly on the theory of extradition and secondly on the effect that human rights has had on the law of extradition. The theory of extradition involves an analysis of extradition from its ancient roots to its position in society today. With regard to extradition in South Africa, reference is made to the various periods of the country’s history. The colonial era before South Africa acquired Republican status in 1961 is referred to in order to establish a basis for the present law of extradition in South Africa. The period during the apartheid era after achieving Republican status in 1961 is discussed in order to show how and why South Africa moved away from its common law roots based on English Law. This era is also of importance as it led to the introduction of the present Extradition Act 67 of 1962. Finally the current position spanning from 1994 to the law as it stands in South Africa today, as influenced by the introduction of Constitutional law, is examined. The rule on non-inquiry is also examined in order to compare the traditional approach by states, where state sovereignty was of paramount importance, with the modern trend of emphasis being placed on fundamental human rights. The methods in terms of which extradition is accomplished, both in South Africa and internationally is also discussed. Such reference to the theory and nature of extradition is done to provide general background on the complex issue to be discussed. The crux of the treatise relates to the impact that the rise in status of fundamental human rights has had on the extradition process. Reference will be made to aspects relating to the protection of the offender’s procedural rights as well as to the protection of the individuals right to life, dignity and bodily integrity. Such examination will refer to the position in South African law as well as the position on the international front. Attention is given to developments in case law as well as to how the courts approach the tension between extradition and human rights both locally and internationally. Finally, in conclusion it is submitted that the extradition process is the most effective procedure available to return an offender to the state seeking his prosecution. The process has however, in modern times adapted to uphold the rights of the offender whose return is requested. This can be seen from the provisions included in recent treaties and conventions, most notably the European Convention on Extradition to which South Africa became a party in 2003. Extradition is clearly concerned with the balancing of the offender’s human rights and the need for effective enforcement of criminal law.

- Description: The process of extradition is a vital component of International Criminal Law as a means of ensuring the suppression and prevention of international crimes. It is the internationally accepted method used by states to surrender an offender back to the state where the alleged offence was committed so that such offender can be tried and punished. Without such process, and with the ease of modern global travel, offenders would, in all likelihood be able to escape prosecution and punishment. Most organized democratic societies recognize that the suppression of crime is necessary for peace and order in society and that extradition is an effective tool to be used to bring to justice a fugitive attempting to evade the law by fleeing to another country. What follows is a discussion, firstly on the theory of extradition and secondly on the effect that human rights has had on the law of extradition. The theory of extradition involves an analysis of extradition from its ancient roots to its position in society today. With regard to extradition in South Africa, reference is made to the various periods of the country’s history. The colonial era before South Africa acquired Republican status in 1961 is referred to in order to establish a basis for the present law of extradition in South Africa. The period during the apartheid era after achieving Republican status in 1961 is discussed in order to show how and why South Africa moved away from its common law roots based on English Law. This era is also of importance as it led to the introduction of the present Extradition Act 67 of 1962. Finally the current position spanning from 1994 to the law as it stands in South Africa today, as influenced by the introduction of Constitutional law, is examined. The rule on non-inquiry is also examined in order to compare the traditional approach by states, where state sovereignty was of paramount importance, with the modern trend of emphasis being placed on fundamental human rights. The methods in terms of which extradition is accomplished, both in South Africa and internationally is also discussed. Such reference to the theory and nature of extradition is done to provide general background on the complex issue to be discussed. The crux of the treatise relates to the impact that the rise in status of fundamental human rights has had on the extradition process. Reference will be made to aspects relating to the protection of the offender’s procedural rights as well as to the protection of the individuals right to life, dignity and bodily integrity. Such examination will refer to the position in South African law as well as the position on the international front. In the South African economy the healthcare sector presently offers healthcare seekers two options to satisfy their healthcare needs – either through private business enterprises in the private sector or public enterprises in the public sector. Likewise, in the healthcare sector's hospital environment, patients can receive treatment from either private or public hospitals. As private business enterprises offering a relatively 'pure', but generally unsought-after service, private hospitals compete aggressively to attract patients. Patients are a hospital's lifeblood and they rightfully expect a high standard of customer service throughout the stay. With today's consumers being better informed, more sophisticated and more demanding than in the past, experts agree that the key to survival in the service industry today, almost without exception, is the quality of the service. The cornerstone of the service industry is without doubt the ability to deliver superior service quality that results in customer satisfaction. And the healthcare industry is no exception. Most consumers will experience a need for healthcare services at some time in their lives, but in South Africa, escalating medical costs in general and private hospitals in particular, have made private healthcare increasingly more expensive for the majority of the country's healthcare seekers. This situation raises the question of customer service in the private hospital industry and how patients' perceive service quality and evaluate customer satisfaction after a hospital stay. There is a growing body of empirical evidence from United States studies to show that service quality and customer (patient) satisfaction positively influence patients' behavioural intentions to reuse the hospital or recommend it to others (word-of-mouth endorsements). However, in South Africa, empirical studies to investigate these relationships have not been adequately addressed. This study was therefore an attempt to address the lack of scientific evidence and debate in the area of patient satisfaction. Against this background, the primary objective of this study was to measure patients' perceptions of service quality and customer satisfaction with a private hospital experience and to estimate the effect that each of these constructs will have on future behavioural intentions. More specifically, the present study was an attempt to assess empirically the most important dimensions of service quality and transaction-specific customer satisfaction dimensions that drive both patient loyalty and ‘overall’ or cumulative satisfaction in the South African private hospital industry. For the purpose of this study, buying intentions was used as a surrogate measure of loyalty as measured by willingness to reuse the hospital and/or willingness to recommend it to others (word-of-mouth endorsements). Initial exploratory research was conducted with the aim of assessing the views of three private hospital stakeholder groups, namely former patients, doctors and management about what the quality of service and customer satisfaction meant to each individual interviewed. A service enterprise that specialises in patient satisfaction surveys in the US provided particularly useful information during this phase of the study. Several case studies of patient satisfaction programmes, mostly at US hospitals, provided additional insights in this area. The study was conducted nationally at private hospitals owned by one of South Africa's three major hospital groups. Five private hospitals in four major centres were selected on a non-probability convenience basis to participate in the study. The hospital group's senior management and the management at each selected hospital gave their full commitment to ensure that the survey was successfully conducted in their hospital wards. Data were collected by means of a quantitative study using a selfadministered, structured questionnaire. Patients had to meet certain qualifying criteria which included being of adult age, in the hospital for an operation and at least one overnight stay. A total of 3 800 questionnaires was distributed to patients on a random basis in selected wards at the five hospitals by senior hospital staff designated for this task. From this distribution, 425 questionnaires were returned of which a final sample of 323 could be statistically analysed. To confirm the internal reliability of the measuring instrument, Cronbach alpha coefficients were calculated for each of the factors identified by the exploratory factor analysis. In order to assess the discriminant validity of the measuring instrument used to measure both service quality and customer satisfaction, the items were subjected to an exploratory factor analysis. The factors that emerged after the exploratory factor analysis were then used as independent variables in the four subsequent multiple regression analyses to assess the study's four hypothesised relationships. The findings revealed that the service quality dimensions that impact positively on both loyalty and cumulative satisfaction are Empathy of nursing staff and Assurance. The customer satisfaction dimensions to impact positively on both loyalty and cumulative satisfaction are Satisfaction with the nursing staff, Satisfaction with meals, and Satisfaction with fees charged.

The aim of this research was to determine whether vandalism at schools in Nelson Mandela Metropole (NMM) has an influence on learners’ scholastic achievement. Against the background of the literature review, this investigation endeavours to report on the nature and extent of vandalism at a sample of South African schools, as well as preventative measures that be introduced to combat such vandalism. The research comprised of a study of relevant literature, followed by a qualitative research design. The literature study covered aspects regarding the nature, extent and consequences of vandalism at schools. The sample group consisted of learners, teachers and parents from four secondary schools in the western region of the Uitenhage District. The respondents completed questionnaires regarding their viewpoints on the role that the school, the parents, the community, the police and the media could play in curbing acts of vandalism at schools. The respective principals and some members of staff were also interviewed. The research revealed that both teachers and learners were of the opinion that preventative measures need to be put in place to combat the scourge of vandalism at schools. However, such programmes should be implemented in collaboration with the community, the parents, the South African Police Services and the media. In conclusion some recommendations were made to combat the scourge of vandalism at schools and these may be of value to all schools in South Africa that experience similar problems.

- Description: Substitute care is a temporary or permanent placement of children under the supervision of an adult person due to the absence of their biological parents. The escalating divorce rate, increase in extramarital births, high incidence of family violence, the growing number of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, and the increasing career-orientatedness of parents have led to the development of diverse family structures. Grandparents and other family members are increasingly becoming the primary caretakers for children. Whilst it is generally assumed by society that children’s well-being is better served when they are raised by their biological parents, the purpose of this study is to: • explore what influence substitute care has on learners’ motivation; • formulate guidelines and recommendations for educators to improve the current levels of motivation of learners in substitute care. The literature related to substitute care and motivation were reviewed, with the aim of providing a firm theoretical basis for the study. Concepts related to motivation discussed, included types of and sources of motivation. Concepts related to the second focus of this study included forms of substitute care. Motivational theories related to this study were briefly discussed, namely: the Attribution Theory, the Drive Theory, Goal Theory, and the Self-worth and Selfefficacy Theories. Factors that have a motivational influence on learners, such as acceptance versus rejection, praise versus criticism, success versus failure and positive self-concept versus negative self-concept, were also discussed. A link was then drawn between motivation and substitute care. ii The research design chosen for this study can be described as qualitative, interpretive and constructive in nature. The research study was conducted in two phases: Phase One provided an investigation of the research problem by means of the following open-ended question: What is the influence or impact of your status as a child in substitute care on your motivation? Data were collected by means of eleven unstructured, in-depth personal interviews. Purposeful sampling was undertaken, which included high school learners all in substitute care. Data were analysed, as proposed by the eight steps of Tesch. Discussions between the observer, moderator and an independent re-coder took place to determine the final results of the research through a consensus principle. Key and related concepts were clustered together to formulate themes, categories and sub-categories. The following three themes emerged, based on the results of the data analysis. I. Problems in the close family circle have profound effects on learner motivation. II. Certain motivating forces help learners in substitute care to cope. III. Substitute care does influence learner motivation. Phase Two offered recommendations, derived from the findings of Phase One, to empower teachers in effectively supporting and motivating learners in substitute care. The conclusion was reached that substitute care does have an influence on the motivation of learners. This motivation can either be positive, which means encouraging learners towards their goal, or negative, which implies that it moves learners away from their goal.

Whilst it is generally assumed by society that children’s well-being is better served when they are raised by their biological parents, the purpose of this study is to: • explore what influence substitute care has on learners’ motivation; • formulate guidelines and recommendations for educators to improve the current levels of motivation of learners in substitute care. The literature related to substitute care and motivation were reviewed, with the aim of providing a firm theoretical basis for the study. Concepts related to motivation discussed, included types of and sources of motivation. Concepts related to the second focus of this study included forms of substitute care. Motivational theories related to this study were briefly discussed, namely: the Attribution Theory, the Drive Theory, Goal Theory, and the Self-worth and Selfefficacy Theories. Factors that have a motivational influence on learners, such as acceptance versus rejection, praise versus criticism, success versus failure and positive self-concept versus negative self-concept, were also discussed. A link was then drawn between motivation and substitute care. ii The research design chosen for this study can be described as qualitative, interpretive and constructive in nature. The research study was conducted in two phases: Phase One provided an investigation of the research problem by means of the following open-ended question: What is the influence or impact of your status as a child in substitute care on your motivation? Data were collected by means of eleven unstructured, in-depth personal interviews. Purposeful sampling was undertaken, which included high school learners all in substitute care. Data were analysed, as proposed by the eight steps of Tesch. Discussions between the observer, moderator and an independent re-coder took place to determine the final results of the research through a consensus principle. Key and related concepts were clustered together to formulate themes, categories and sub-categories. The following three themes emerged, based on the results of the data analysis. I. Problems in the close family circle have profound effects on learner motivation. II. Certain motivating forces help learners in substitute care to cope. III. Substitute care does influence learner motivation. Phase Two offered recommendations, derived from the findings of Phase One, to empower teachers in effectively supporting and motivating learners in substitute care. The conclusion was reached that substitute care does have an influence on the motivation of learners. This motivation can either be positive, which means encouraging learners towards their goal, or negative, which implies that it moves learners away from their goal.

- Description: This small scale exploratory research project investigated the grounding of rational number concepts in informal, everyday life situations. A qualitative approach was taken to allow for the identification and then in depth investigation, of issues of importance for such a grounding of rational number understanding. The methodology followed could be seen as a combination of grounded theory and developmental research. And the data was generated through in-depth and clinical interviews structured around a number of grounded tasks related to rational numbers. The research comprised three cycles of interviews that were transcribed and then analysed in detail, interspersed with periods of reading and reflection. The pilot cycle involved a single grade three teacher, the second cycle involved 2 grade three teachers and the third cycle involved 2 grade three children. The research identified a number of different perspectives that were all important for the development of a fundamental intuitive understanding that could be considered personally meaningful to the individual concerned and relevant to the development of rational number concepts. Firstly in order to motivate and engage the child on a personal level the grounding situation needed to be seen as personally significant by the child. Secondly, coordinating operations provided a means of developing a fundamental intuitive understanding, through coordination with affording structures of the situation that are relevant to rational numbers. Finally, goal directed actions that are deliberately structured to achieve explicit goals in a situation are important for the development of more explicit concepts and skills fundamental for rational number understanding. Different explicit structures give rise to different interpretations of rational numbers in grounding situations. In addition to these perspectives, it became evident that building and learning representations was important for developing a more particularly mathematical understanding, based on the fundamental understanding derived from the child's grounded experience. The conclusion drawn in this research as a result of this complexity, is that to achieve a comprehensive and meaningful grounding, children's learning of rational numbers will not follow a simple linear trajectory. Rather this process forms a web of learning, threading coordinating operations for intuitive development, interpretations for explicit grounding and representations to develop more formal mathematical conceptions.
