- Description: This paper reports on the third order nonlinear optical properties of cobalt, nickel and tetrakis(4- terbutylphenoxy)phthalocyaninatocopper(II) isomers, using the Z-scan technique. Metal-free isomers were found to have high nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) values compared to the metalated isomers. Metal-free C2v isomer was found to have the highest β value of 1.52 × 10− 10 mMW− 1 in THF. All the metal-free and metal phthalocyanine isomers nonlinear properties were found to be dependent on the singlet state absorption. Imaginary second order nonlinear hyperpolarizability (Im[γ]), ground state cross section (σg), excited states cross sections (σs and σt) and two photon absorption (TPA) cross section (σTPA) values are reported in this work. The five-energy level model rate equations were used to model the nonlinear response and absorption cross sections.

Improved triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields were observed for the conjugated complexes compared to Pcs alone, due to the heavy atom effect of cys-AgNPs. Asymmetric complexes 1,2, 3 and their respective conjugates recorded higher photosensitizing properties and PACT activities compared to 4 and 4-cys-AgNPs, respectively. Higher log reductions and percentage reductions of S. Aureus were recorded for conjugated complexes compared to ZnPcs only, showing enhanced PACT activities due to their higher singlet oxygen quantum yields.

However all Pcs showed enhanced nonlinear optical properties in the presence of DNDs. DNDs-Si(OH)2TPPc and DNDs-Si (OH)2TBPc gave the highest imaginary third-order susceptibility (Im[X(3)]) and hyperpolarizability (γ) at 5.19 × 10−8 and 3.85 × 10−8 esu and 2.66 × 10−27 and 1.97 × 10−27 esu, respectively. DNDs-Si(OH)2TBPc nanoconjugates showed lowest limiting threshold (Ilim) value of 0.01 J.cm−2 relative to 0.09 for DNDs-Si (OH)2TPPc.

Data obtained from in silico docking of the ligands in the PfDXR receptor cavity (3AU9)5 support their potential as PfDXR inhibitors.

Their structures were characterized with UV–vis, 1HNMR, 13CNMR and HRMS spectroscopies. Photophysical and photochemical experiments results showed that compound I and II had an absorption maximum around 650 nm, with molar extinction coefficients of 1 × 104 M−1 cm−1. They had strong fluorescence emission in 650–660 nm upon excitation with 419–422 nm light. ESR showed that singlet oxygen was produced upon irradiation of compounds with 650 nm light in the presence of molecular oxygen. The photo-bleaching test indicated that the structure of compounds was stable. These new compounds exhibit excellent anti-tumor effects and lower toxicity compared to m-THPC in vitro and in vivo. Compound I and II had high tumor selectivity, which could induced tumor cells shrinkage and necrosis under 650 nm laser irradiation. Flow cytometry revealed that the compounds might mediate PDT effect at late apoptotic phase. These results make these compound I and II promising candidates for future study in photo-diagnosis and photodynamic therapy of cholangiocarcinoma.

- Description: Several isolates of Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo-Crivelli) Vuillemin (Hypocreales: Cordycipitacae) and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin (Hypocreales: Clavicipitacae) have been investigated as possible microbial control agents of key citrus pests in South Africa. Although laboratory results have been promising, field trials against foliar pests have shown limited success. These findings highlighted the need to investigate other biological attributes of these fungal isolates besides virulence in order to select candidates that may be better suited for the foliar environment. Thus, this study investigated the influence of temperature on the in vitro growth of seven indigenous local isolates and the humidity requirements necessary to promote successful infection, in comparison with two commercial isolates (B. bassiana PPRI 5339 and M. anisopliae ICIPE 69). All the fungal isolates grew across a range of temperatures (8–34 °C) and optimally between 26 and 28 °C. Similarly, fungal infection of Thaumatotibia leucotreta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) fifth instars occurred across a range of humidity levels (12%, 43%, 75%, 98%) regardless of fungal concentration, although external sporulation was restricted to treatments exposed to 98% relative humidity. - Description: Several isolates of Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo-Crivelli) Vuillemin (Hypocreales: Cordycipitacae) and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin (Hypocreales: Clavicipitacae) have been investigated as possible microbial control agents of key citrus pests in South Africa. Although laboratory results have been promising, field trials against foliar pests have shown limited success. These findings highlighted the need to investigate other biological attributes of these fungal isolates besides virulence in order to select candidates that may be better suited for the foliar environment. Thus, this study investigated the influence of temperature on the in vitro growth of seven indigenous local isolates and the humidity requirements necessary to promote successful infection, in comparison with two commercial isolates (B. bassiana PPRI 5339 and M. anisopliae ICIPE 69). All the fungal isolates grew across a range of temperatures (8–34 °C) and optimally between 26 and 28 °C. Similarly, fungal infection of Thaumatotibia leucotreta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) fifth instars occurred across a range of humidity levels (12%, 43%, 75%, 98%) regardless of fungal concentration, although external sporulation was restricted to treatments exposed to 98% relative humidity. Many cryptic invasions have become so problematic that there is a need to implement control measures. This paper explores the potential for biological control to be implemented as a means of managing cryptic invasions. Firstly, the paper defines the different forms of cryptic invasion, differentiating between interspecific and intraspecific invasions; this hierarchy influences how to detect, study and ultimately implement biological control when cryptic invasions occur. Secondly, unique challenges associated with biological control programmes for cryptic invasions are addressed, including: the need for intraspecific level host specificity in agents, the occurrence of hybridisation between native species/lineages and the target weed, the role of enemy release in cryptic invasions in the presence of closely related native plant species/lineages, and a review of potential stakeholder conflicts of interest and legislation. Biological control of cryptic invasions has been shown to be possible, however the process will be more difficult and complex than controlling traditional targets and will likely take up more time and resources. If these challenges are overcome, then biological control programmes against cryptic invasions should be able to proceed and maintain the same standards as traditional biological control programmes.

- Description: Synthesis of some thiourea derivatives have been achieved by using ultrasound, the compounds have been characterised using IR, NMR, GC-MS and elemental analysis. The single crystal X-ray structure of N-[(benzyloxy)methanethioyl]benzamide (IV), 1-benzoyl-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)thiourea (V) and 3-benzoyl-1-(1-benzylpiperidin-4-yl)thiourea (VI) has been presented and the bond lengths and bond angles contrasted with computed results. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels as well as the global chemical reactivity descriptors of the compounds have also been computed and discussed. Two comformers were obtained for compounds IV to VI in the molecular Electrostatic potential and the vibrational frequency computations and these have been discussed.

'We throw away our books': Students’ reading practices and identities

- Description: The aim of this research was to understand university students’ self-reported reading practices. The students attended the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, a historically black institution in a rural and under-resourced setting. A framework of New Literacy Studies (NLS) was used to understand students’ self-reported reading practices and the links between these and their identities. Tools provided by Gee, 2005, Gee, 2011 were applied to conduct a CDA of focus group discussions. In the ‘We Blacks’ Discourse, interviewees ‘othered’ the idea of reading as not being culturally valued. It was closely allied to the ‘Resistance to Reading’ Discourse, as participants explained that they tended to disregard books and did not enjoy leisure reading. The ‘Better Than Us’ discourse was drawn upon to suggest that reading was associated with attitudes of superiority. These discourses tended to homogenise class and other differences between black students and indicated the ways in which their experiences made adopting academic identities difficult. The analysis suggests that the racism of the past continues to impact students’ reading identities. The article concludes that the effects of these and related discourses require a response across the education sector, and transformative pedagogies might be needed in higher education.

Synthesized materials were characterized using FT-IR, Raman, powder X-ray diffraction, and UVeVis spectroscopies and also by transmission electron and scanning electron microscopies. Phthalocyanine loadings onto graphene quantum dots of 0.40 mg/mg and 0.14 mg/mg (Pc mass/conjugate mass) for the p-p stacked and covalent linked conjugates respectively were observed. Covalent linkage to graphene quantum dots proved to be functionally superior to p-p linkage, where singlet oxygen quantum yield value of the phthalocyanine in the membrane for the covalent linked conjugate was approximately twice that of the p-p stacked membrane.
