Educators’ management of the learning environment for enhanced teaching and learning in selected primary schools in the East London Education District

- Description: Classroom environment has been conceptually and practically conceived as a place where learning takes place. However, despite the importance of classrooms in enhancing learning, most classrooms, especially in the sub-Saharan African countries are poorly arranged and situated in noisy and crowded environments. In addition to this, most teachers lack basic skills to manage classrooms. In the light of the above-mentioned issues, the main purpose of this study was to investigate educators’ management of the learning environments for enhanced teaching and learning in selected primary schools in the East London Education District, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. In achieving this aim, the researcher adopted mixed method research approach. The population for this study was selected from intermediate phase educators in the East London Education District. The sample size was 76 intermediate phase educators, which was conveniently selected. Questionnaire (quantitative), interview and observation (qualitative) research instruments were used to collect the data. A structured questionnaire was administered to 76 respondents; while five Head of Departments (HOD) from study population were interviewed and observed. The SPSS was used to conduct both descriptive and inferential analysis. Quantitative data analysis was used to measure perceived stress level situations among intermediate phase educators, while content analysis was used to analyse narratives of the participants. The study found that giving motivational talks, asking about learners parents/guardians, asking about their experiences at home, knowing their needs, and having discussion with their parents/guardians, telling them interesting stories, learning how to call their names properly, giving them responsibilities in the classroom and motivating them to participate in learning activities are important techniques and approaches for dealing with the emotional problems of the learners in the classroom. This implies that teachers should be more compassionate about their learners, because learners with serious emotional problems cannot learn and be productive in the classroom. The study concludes that involving the learners in the decision-making on the procedures, approaches and strategies to classroom management are fundamental for ensuring efficient and productive classroom. Moreover, the educators should adopt varied approaches in the management of the classroom. This is because an approach that works for one teacher/learner may not work for other teacher/learner. Based on this conclusion, the study recommends that the teachers should set classroom rules and ensure that the learners follow these rules strictly in order to avoid rowdiness in the classroom. Failure to set rules and ensure that the learners follow classroom rules might be counter-productive to learning process.

- Description: Mathematics is the foundation for the economic and technological development of any nation. It has been asserted that Mathematics is expected to help in accelerating social, economic and technological progress of any society. The Primary school level is very important in any educational system and any lack at this level would permeate to other levels of the educational system. Hence, this dissertation examines the use of textbooks by teachers in teaching Mathematics at selected primary schools in East London Education district. The study adopted the interpretivist paradigm and employed the qualitative approach in investigating the phenomenon. The dissertation made use of phenomenology research design as it attempted to understand people’s (learners’ and teachers’) perceptions, perspectives and understandings of the use of textbooks in teaching Mathematics. Semi-structured interviews and observation were used to elicit information from the six mathematics teachers and three heads of department who were purposively selected. The data collected were analysed using thematic approach where themes were developed from the research questions after transcribing, sorting and categorizing them. The findings of the study demonstrated that the participants selected textbooks from the ones prescribed by the department that were written in the CAPS documents. They had no influence or decision on textbook selection. All the teachers believed that lesson plan is very important and it is a must to have a very detailed and comprehensive lesson plan that is well-aligned to the contents of CAPS document and the textbook. The study further revealed that, for effective delivery of lesson and planning, there is need for a practical use of textbooks by the teacher. The study concluded that one of the most fundamental issues to consider is the fact that, as good as the use of textbook for planning and delivery of lesson activities is, it can also be a problem if not carefully and professionally planned and used accordingly. The over-dependence on textbooks at the expense of other resources may cause ineffective learning and teaching of mathematics.

Implementation of the policy on religious equity in public schools in the East London Education District : towards a framework for religious diversity

- Description: The study sought to establish the implementation of the policy on religious equity in public schools in the East London Education district in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Underpinned by Van Meter and Van Horn (2015) with implementation and conceptual theory and also a theory on opportunity to learn and school performance by Van Der Grift and Houtveen(2006), the study was located in the pragmatist research paradigm and followed a mixed methods approach and concurrent triangulation design. The research sampling technique was random for high school learners in selected schools and purposeful for principals, heads of departments, teachers and provincial education officials. Three methods were employed to collect data from selected public schools and from the provincial office namely; semi-structured interviews, individual interviews and observation. Quantitative data were analysed statistically and presented in the form of descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were analysed using the thematic content analysis technique. Major findings of the study are that teachers and principals understood the concept religious equity and had a fair understanding of the policy on religious equity. Schools were predominantly Christian-oriented in terms of religious practices and there were no recorded cases of religious conflict. Learners of minority religions were not compelled to attend Christian religious functions in schools and were allowed to attend their own religious functions outside school. This was established from the fact that participants cited freedom of religion as being exercised in schools. However, it was further established that there was no strategic monitoring and support for teachers in the implementation of religious equity. There were also no deliberate measures and strategies for the implementation of religious equity suggesting challenges and inconsistencies in the implementation of the policy. While there were notable challenges in the implementation of the policy, due to resistance of stakeholders to change, schools had great opportunities which could be utilized to enhance the implementation of the policy on religious equity. The study concludes by noting that, while key policy implementers had an understanding of religious equity, the situation on the ground revealed challenges and inconsistencies in the implementation of the policy which resulted in a Christian-dominated school environment at the expense of minority religions The study recommends, among other things, that that religious equity be adhered to as enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa of 1996 and the South African Schools Act of 1996. The teaching and learning environment should include Religion Education as per prescription by National Policy on Religion Education of 2003, that monitoring and support of teachers be done, and that community involvement with policy development be considered crucial as well as moral education teaching in schools. A framework for enhancing implementation of the policy on religious equity is also proposed.

The implementation of foundational provision programmes in a rural based University in South Africa: implications for student academic development practices

- Description: The purpose was to establish how foundational provision programmes were implemented in a rural based university in South Africa and implications to student development practices. The study was located in the- post- positivism research paradigm, followed a mixed methods research approach and utilised a concurrent triangulation research design. For the qualitative component of the research, participants (academics and Coordinators of the foundation programmes and senior students who had enrolled through foundational provision programmes) were purposively sampled. The sample for the quantitative data comprised all the students who enrolled in foundation provision programmes between the years 2008 to 2011 and mainstream students who had enrolled between the years 2009 and 2012. For qualitative approach, focus group discussions were conducted, semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Quantitative data was sought from university institutional data storage warehouse, HIGHER EDUCATION MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (HEMIS). For qualitative approach, the data analysis for all data collection methods was done through thematic analysis. For quantitative approach, a longitudinal analysis was conducted to track and compare two cohorts of mainstream and foundation students in terms of retention, attrition and graduation rates. Quantitative data were analysed statistically by use of descriptive and some inferential statistics. Main findings were that: there was inadequate capacity institutionally for developed systems of admission for students entering foundation programmes, lack of curriculum compliance by different lecturers and lack of knowledge of curriculum reforms by lecturers who teach in foundation level, funding for foundation provision programmes was not adequate and lacked transparency. However, there were adequate recruitment processes in the university for lecturers that teach in foundational foundation provision programme and there was no government interference into how foundation programmes are governed. The study also found that students had experienced the student development practices positively, however, these practices were not enough, and equally most responsive student development practice did not exist at the institution under study. The study also found that there had been consistent funding from government but there was no proper expenditure systems in the institution. The study found that, in terms of graduation rates, the two groups compared relatively the same as there was no significant differences in patterns and trends that were observed. However, retention rates suggest that, in the first year, the two groups perform relatively the same, thereafter, there is a significant difference into how the two groups perform as they proceed to other years, especially the second year, where the mainstream cohort showed better performance than their foundation provision programme counterparts. Consequently, high attrition rates were experienced by foundation provision students than mainstream students, this was also experienced a lot more during the second year and third year transition. The implication of these findings was that due to institutional factors that affect the implementation of foundation programmes, these had notable impact on the attrition and dropout rates on foundation provision students. In addition, due to a lack of responsive student development practices, foundation programmes compared relatively low to their mainstream counterparts in retention. The study has recommended a model that can be implemented in the institution. The first component of the model is to put an admission system in place. Institution has to establish a platform where faculties present development plans for foundation provision programmes. In addition, there should be a dedicated Accountant managing finances of the foundation programme. The institution should establish the Tracking and Monitoring student development practice, establish Writing Centres and Learning Communities and employ more people in the Centre for Higher Education, Teaching and Learning department to ensure full implementation of existing student development practices and those that will be established. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Education, 2016

Self-reflection practices of school-management teams in the Capricorn District : towards a reflective management strategy for South African schools

- Description: The study investigated the self-reflection practices of School Management Teams (SMTs) in the Capricorn District. The purpose of the study was to establish self-reflective practices employed by SMT in performing their management functions, and to suggest a reflective model for the enhancement of SMT performance. The study followed the qualitative approach with a case-study research design. The population consisted of SMTs from primary, secondary and special schools. Purposive sampling was utilised to select 8 Head of Departments from less experienced to more experienced in management positions, while 9 principal and 9 deputy principals were randomly selected. Literature reviewed focused on the aims of self-reflection; the functions of SMT; the strengths and weaknesses of self-reflection; self-reflective practices and enhanced performance; models of school management; challenges in school management; and previous studies on SMT and school management. Henderson’s Ethical Model of Enquiry on reflective practice was used. The theory discusses what characterises reflective practitioners. Data was collected from quest views, individual interviews and focus group interviews. The interpretation and understanding were organised in the form of descriptive accounts. Tape-recorded interviews and data from quest views were transcribed verbatim. After transcribing data a sense of the whole was obtained by reading carefully with understanding, and then summarizing the salient aspects. Themes were identified from the responses and discussed. The study found that SMT members were not fully aware of all of their daily functions and poor reflective practices made it difficult for them to effectively fulfil their management functions. Furthermore, the study revealed that SMT members experienced challenges, such as dealing with unprofessional teachers, poor parental involvement, poor communication, poor infrastructure and lack of resources amd these impacted negatively on their performance. The study provided insights into the practice of self-reflection and how SMT members could become reflective practitioners. A new framework was suggested that SMTs should continuously and critically reflect on their management practices and decisions. The study recommends that SMT be trained and oriented about management functions prior to their appointment in the positions. The study further recommends that SMTs consider self-reflection as part of their daily activities.
