- Description: This treatise investigates how eco-tourism can be employed to support the development of natural identity and place-making of a sacred environment through architectural intervention in the midst of an industrialised society. The principle argument of this treatise is that through the symbiosis of nature and the built environment, architecture can provide a counter-narrative to the disconnection between humans and nature. With ecotourism being a contemporary attempt to re-connect humans with our natural routes, to create awareness, a spiritual awakening and a global warming crisis intervention, this treatise will be the architectural product of conservation. The unification of ecology and architecture is critical to a contemporary definition of the natural environment. This treatise proposes the design of botanical conservatory facilities at Cathedral Peak, a tourist and research precinct in the renowned natural and cultural National Heritage Site of the Drakensberg Mountains. It presents an architecture which becomes an extension of the landscape and articulates its natural ecological systems through architectural design, while reinforcing the junction of the natural and built environment. It places the focus on integration between inside/outside spaces, in which the harmonious and symbiotic relationship can be experienced. Although it presents a contemporary architecture, it integrates various vernacular material and tectonic references, becoming a symbol of the nature of the place. The proposal is further described as a ‘cathedral of conservation’ designed as a modulated system for the simulation of particular climatic environments, with attributes drawn from the Gothic cathedral archetype in its attention to verticality and detail to materiality, and from a phenomenological perspective of place and identity as a building asserting the distinctive nature of the place. This cathedral of conservation is an architectural response to the sacredness and spirituality of the mountains, inducing a dialogue between the conservatory and the mighty Cathedral Peak which is one of the most famous natural attributes of the Drakensberg and thus the site’s most valuable vista.

This in turn will establish whether the tourism sector can be used as a tool for local economic development in the municipality. In the end, this study will make recommendations on what needs to be done in the municipality for the tourism sector to be more effective for the local communities and the municipality. The researcher has conducted a qualitative research study through the use of structured questionnaires as the data collection tool, in order to obtain information from specific population members of the concerned local municipality on tourism and LED issues. The study has been conducted from twenty three accommodation establishments in Mnquma Local Municipality. During the data collection period, the researcher discovered that these accommodation establishments are facing a number of challenges ranging from poor accessibility and signage for which the study is expected to address these in the recommendations. The study will include a purposive sample of tourism businesses in the hospitality sector in Mnquma Local Municipality. From the purposive sample, the researcher opted for total population sampling which is a type of purposive sampling technique where the researcher chooses to examine the entire population. At the end, researcher recommends that the municipality needs to address the infrastructural challenges such as roads (for accessibility to tourist sites), electricity and health centers to be able to support tourism economic activities. It also needs to ensure on the continuous hosting of events to address the seasonal nature of tourism and to market the municipality as an event destination. The researcher also recommended the establishment of partnerships with sector departments and parastatals such as SEDA, DTI, ECPTA, TEP etc. Lastly, being such a rural municipality with a rich history, culture and heritage, it is recommended that the municipality must prioritise tourism as a tool for Local Economic Development to better the lives of its population and to improve its economy.

Towards an industrial ecology for the Nelson Mandela Bay: Metropolitan area

- Description: The aim of this study is to formulate a model of industrial ecology for wider application in the Nelson Mandel Bay (NMB) Metropole. To achieve this aim, the following objectives will be pursued: • A theoretical investigation of the concept of industrial ecology – in an attempt to establish its meaning, as well as the implications thereof. • A theoretical investigation of the operational implications of industrial ecology, including existing methodologies, such as Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) that can be applied, in order to develop a system of industrial ecology between different companies. • The formulation of a methodology for application to the case study. • Presenting and discussing the research results produced by the application of the industrial ecology related methodology to the case study. • To present a synthesis of the research results of this study. This objective includes a critical evaluation of the research methodology and results, as well as some recommendations for the facilitation of industrial ecology. The methodology of the research involved conducting semi structured interviews, conducting a Material Flow Analysis and Life Cycle Analysis using SIMAPRO software. There interview with Goodyear management took place (see Appendix A), while the management at Sovereign Foods agreed to an interview however they didn’t honour the agreement. During the interview at Goodyear understanding of the operational process was achieved by conducting the interviews. The three areas that were discussed during the interview process were: 1. How the boiler works; 2. Current Air-Emission results; and 3. The process of steam generation. An MFA and an LCA on the production process of comparing the boiler functionality was conducted, so that there is an adequate understanding of the environmental performance of the two different boilers. The results of the MFA are presented as follows, namely: the goal and scope definition and the inventory results. Coal boiler versus fluidised boiler data where modelled. The modelling is done on comparing the flow of chemicals during steam production process, and which chemicals have a significant environmental impact. The LCA results looked at the basis of the symbiotic approach by identifying sustainable choices of design, production and consumption. The findings of this research have been obtained from the investigation of industrial ecology framework planning at Goodyear SA and Sovereign Foods. The findings have revealed that there is a synergy that exists between the two case-study areas. However, this is based on Goodyear changing the technology of the boiler they use (a boiler creates steam for the tyre-building process). The company will be required to use a fluidised boiler, instead of the current coal boiler. The use of the fluidised boiler will ensure that all waste streams at Goodyear will be reused and recycled, thereby creating the framework for industrial ecology. The results that are firstly drawn out of SIMAPRO is the Life Cycle Inventory. In this research, there is a flow of 1437 chemical materials and substances in the production of steam using both coal boiler and fluidized boiler. Due to the number of substance flow elements, the research has presented only the significant substances that influence the environmental performance of steam production using the two different feeder materials, which are coal and chicken matter (see Figure 4.4). In the coal boiler process, sulfur comprises the largest amount of chemical substance. The other top five chemical components that contribute to the steam production process are: nickel, chromium, arsenic and iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium. The scale of figure 4.4 is reduced to show the various number of chemical flows found in the steam production process through SIMAPRO software. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results were presented looking at namely the following characterization, normalization, weighting, single score and damage assessment (see Figure 4.7 – 4.10 p87 – p90). The figures are presented as taken directly from the reports drawn from the SIMAPRO software. Figure 4.7 gives the characterisation results up to 100%, where 0% has a minimal environmental effect; whereas 100% has the most significant environmental effect. Oxidation of coal is compared versus the oxidation of chicken matter, the coal boiler process has higher environmental impacts. Figure 4.8 shows the normalisation results of the coal boiler versus the fluidised boiler for the functional unit steam production. The environmental degradation under normalisation between the two boilers are measured, based on three parameters, namely: human health, ecosystems and resources. In all three parameters that are measured under normalisation, the production of steam using the coal boiler has the highest impacts. The weighting results in Figure 4.9 show a mirror image of the normalisation results. Finally, a gap analysis of the theoretical requirements for industrial ecology is displayed versus what currently exists in the case study area. The gap analysis will assist in the development of recommendations. These will be presented in the next chapter. A gap analysis of findings is discussed leading into the synthesis. The value of this research is that the baseline data of planning for an industrial ecology create a platform that can be used for implementing an industrial ecology between Goodyear SA and Sovereign Foods. This will, in time, have wider applications for the entire NMB metropole.

- Description: The game industry has become one of the fastest-growing industries in South Africa and consequently, during recent years, a growing number of stock farms have been converted to game farms. All forms of utilization within the game industry play a vital role with regards to sustainability and simultaneously contributing a significant boost to the national economy. It is therefore important to ensure that game ranchers are as well-informed as possible in their decision-making, as well as in assessing their outputs and endeavours. However, the information available on the game industry in the Eastern Cape is limited. This research study therefore focuses on the emerging trends in the game industry in the province. The objectives of the research are to examine various pertinent factors associated with the game industry, investigate the trends and discuss whether these trends have any implications for future purposes. The research commenced with a literature review, as well as information from earlier survey studies of the Eastern Cape game industry. For the current study, a replicate survey was conducted throughout the Eastern Cape, involving as many game ranchers as possible, and data were collected by means of self-administered questionnaires. The dilemma confronting the black wildebeest in the Eastern Cape was thoroughly investigated, together with farmers’ opinions and trends for the future of the species. It was important to include this particular aspect in the research, as at the time of the survey, widespread concerns were expressed with regards to new legislation which emerged during that time. The research cast light on several aspects associated with the industry which could positively assist game ranchers towards improved management and planning, as well as provide guidelines for future development purposes. Furthermore, the research identified crucial issues that should receive immediate attention from stakeholders across the industry as well as government.

Urban agriculture and access to microfinance in Snake Park, Zimbabwe

- Description: The role that urban farming plays in the food supply of cities and towns to compliment rural agriculture is increasingly gaining traction. In Zimbabwe, urban agriculture has equally become an important contributor of urban food, particularly for low income households. Urban agriculture is increasingly being viewed as a viable measure to ameliorate urban food insecurity. In spite of the important role it serves in the urban landscape, it is yet to attain political legitimacy and more importantly to gain recognition from the formal financial economy. This in turn has limited the contribution that the urban agriculture can make towards poverty alleviation and inequality for the urban poor. Access to finance and lines of credit for the urban poor can have a significant impact towards not only their agricultural productivity but also their ability to weather economic shocks. This study therefore sought to investigate factors that limit access of small scale urban farmers to agricultural microcredit. The findings of this study are derived from qualitative and quantitative data collected from small scale urban farmers in Snake Park and key informant interviews conducted in Harare, Zimbabwe. The study establishes that the lack of information on credit opportunities, loan apathy and too high interest rates were some of the reasons divulged by farmers in not seeking credit from financial institutions. The results reveal that married women have an added constraint to accessing finance by virtue of husband being head of the house, mean that they hold power to cede assets as collateral. The findings from the financial institution indicated that though the majority of firms focused on large scale commercial farming ventures, some did offer microcredit for small scale urban farmers. The results also showed that though collateral facilitated access to credit and finance for urban agriculture, proven business record, group solidarity (a form of guarantee) and character were equally important. The study recommends amongst others that farmers form groups and embark on savings schemes. Added to this, bankers and farmer associations need to meet to arrive at realistic forms of security for small loans.

This has led South African commercial banks to launch mobile banking applications on smartphones to enhance the growth of the economy and to provide more opportunities to improve the deprived sector of the economy, at acceptable rates. Moreover, opportunities exist for revenue growth, such as the delivery of greater real-time access to products and the offering of a wide variety of banking services. South African commercial banks could realise opportunities for economical and revenue growth should they focus on specific criteria that could enhance mobile banking adoption. Such criteria could not until recently, be realised by commercial banks in South Africa as the adoption rate of mobile banking remained low at 9%. Numerous South African studies have attempted to determine factors that could enhance mobile banking adoption in South Africa. There is, however, a lack of South African studies attempting to identify user experience factors that could enhance mobile banking adoption in South Africa. User experience refers to the subjective feeling of the user that results from their interaction or intention to interact with a product, to perform a specific task in a specific environment. One of the most important components for the success of any product is a positive user experience. When the user interface and functionality of a product match the expectations of the users and make the users effective and efficient, feel safe and attain some level of self-worth from using or possessing the product, their interaction with the product becomes more satisfactory. Consequently, the importance of designing for a positive user experience opens up the potential for identifying potential user experience factors that could enhance mobile banking adoption in South Africa. The user experience factors identified in this study infer their components from the user experience aspect of persuasive design and its elements, namely persuasion and trust, that led to the emergence of scarcity, reciprocation and security factors that could enhance mobile banking adoption in South Africa. A case study was employed to confirm the factors that could enhance mobile banking adoption in South Africa. The findings from the case study and the extensive literature review culminated in a set of user experience factors that in future could enhance the adoption of mobile banking in South Africa.

This rapid increase in data means that if financial institutions are to derive significant value from this data, they need to identify new ways to analyse this data effectively. Due to the considerable size of the data, financial institutions also need to consider how to effectively visualise the data. Traditional tools such as relational database management systems have problems processing large amounts of data due to memory constraints, latency issues and the presence of both structured and unstructured data The aim of this research was to use data analysis and information visualisation techniques (IV) to support the effective analysis of large financial data sets. In order to visually analyse the data effectively, the underlying data model must produce results that are reliable. A large financial data set was identified, and used to demonstrate that IV techniques can be used to support the effective analysis of large financial data sets. A review of the literature on large financial data sets, visual analytics, existing data management and data visualisation tools identified the shortcomings of existing tools. This resulted in the determination of the requirements for the data management tool, and the IV tool. The data management tool identified was a data warehouse and the IV toolkit identified was Tableau. The IV techniques identified included the Overview, Dashboards and Colour Blending. The IV tool was implemented and published online and can be accessed through a web browser interface. The data warehouse and the IV tool were evaluated to determine their accuracy and effectiveness in supporting the effective analysis of the large financial data set. The experiment used to evaluate the data warehouse yielded positive results, showing that only about 4% of the records had incorrect data. The results of the user study were positive and no major usability issues were identified. The participants found the IV techniques effective for analysing the large financial data set.

The purpose of the study was to determine the views that grade nine learners have regarding the marketing of nursing as a career to attract school-leavers to the profession. The researcher also explored and described how grade nine learners are being informed or wish to be informed of nursing as a career. Based on the findings of the study, broad guidelines were developed for nurse educators at Nursing Education Institutions so as to facilitate the marketing of nursing as a career for school leavers. To achieve the purpose of this study, a quantitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual study design was used. The study was conducted at selected senior secondary schools in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The research population in this study comprised of all grade nine learners at secondary schools in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. A simple random sampling method was used to select participants. A structured self-administered questionnaire was used as the data collection tool. The data collected were analysed with the help of the statistician, using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study findings revealed that grade nine learners in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had a positive response to choosing nursing as a career and that schools situated in the lower socio-economic areas had the highest percentage of grade nine learners indicating an interest in nursing as a career. The study concludes with recommendations for nursing practice, education and research. Ethical principles have been maintained throughout the study.

In particular, the technique is used to investigate the sub-bandgap response associated with the incorporation of GaSb quantum rings into the active region of a conventional GaAs p-i-n solar cell. These GaSb/GaAs quantum ring solar cells are a class of third generation cells, with the potential to exceed the Shockley-Queisser efficiency limit of single junction devices. Wavelength-modulation spectroscopy (WMS) techniques involve the modulation of the wavelength of a pseudo-monochromatic light source, with the resulting variation in the measured photocurrent then being a measure of the differential optical response of the solar cell. Although the conventional photocurrent spectrum of a solar cell is a good measure of the optical response characteristics, the differential technique gives supplemental detail related to the absorption spectrum. In addition to the basic WMS setup, we also developed an in situ flux correction module to ensure that a constant excitation intensity is maintained during the wavelength modulation. The excitation source inherently has a spectral dependence that leads to an undesirable contribution to the photocurrent signal. The operation of the flux corrected WMS setup has been demonstrated by photocurrent and photo-capacitance response measurements to obtain the differential quantum efficiency and charging characteristics of the quantum ring solar cells.

There are many reasons for this, such as: unsuitable working conditions, physical demands linked to the occupation and the high proportion of transient unskilled and semi-skilled employees. A study concerning the wellness levels of unskilled and semi-skilled employees therefore contributes to the understanding and improvement of employee health within the industry. The main objective of this study was therefore to identify the wellness levels of employees in the built environment and their perceptions of the extent to which their company provides wellness interventions or strategies. The methodological approach used in this study was within a quantitative paradigm, and a questionnaire was used as a data collection instrument. The findings indicated that the employees engaged in healthy activities and that the organisation encouraged the employees to maintain healthy lifestyles. However, there were areas that required consideration. Specifically, more attention should be given to budgeting for wellness interventions, regular health screenings should take place and more attention to substance abuse is required.

For individuals, the effect includes symptoms of fear, stress, irritability, feelings of isolation, insecurity, and low selfesteem. Healthcare organizations incur increased cost due to litigation due to poor quality of care, high staff turnovers and absenteeism, and their brands are negatively affected. Community members, who are the recipients of care, are placed in danger and are indirectly the victims of such workplace violence, which in turn affects their trust in private healthcare organizations or professions to provide the quality health care that they expect and deserve. Workplace violence takes many forms such as incivility, horizontal violence and bullying to name but a few. The perpetrators of such violence are doctors, nurses, patients and relatives. Workplace violence takes place in South Africa however, paucity in research was found by the researcher. The aim of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of professional nurses regarding workplace violence in a private healthcare facility in order to develop guidelines to address workplace violence in such a facility. A qualitative, explorative, contextual and descriptive study was conducted, using the Critical Social Theory as the paradigm. Data were gathered from professional nurses that have experienced workplace violence utilizing narratives. Fourteen narrative interviews were done until data was saturated. The data was transcribed verbatim and Tesch’s method of thematic synthesis was used to analyse the data. The three themes that emerged from the data were: Professional nurses acknowledge the existence of workplace violence where they work, Participants described the effect of workplace violence on themselves, others and the work environment, and Participants discussed their views regarding management of violence in the workplace. A thick description of the data with a literature control was provided. Thereafter inferences were made regarding the main themes of the guidelines and these focussed on: Preventing and addressing workplace violence by Nursing Service Managers; Preventing and addressing workplace violence by Nurse Unit Managers and Empowering professional nurses to address workplace violence. To ensure rigour and trustworthiness of the study, the researcher used Lincoln and Guba’s criteria namely: credibility, dependability, conformability and transferability. To protect the right and dignity of the participants and to safeguard the integrity of the study the researcher complied with the following ethical principles: beneficence, non- maleficence, autonomy, justice, veracity, privacy, and confidentiality. The limitations of this study were that data was collected from only one category of nurses and only one private healthcare facility was used. Recommendations from this study include implementation of the guidelines to establish their effectiveness. The findings of this study can be used to empower professional nurses to deal with workplace violence and to prevent the short and long term effects of workplace violence on the individual, the organization and the community. Nursing education institutions can also incorporate workplace violence into their curriculum to increase the awareness of students regarding this phenomenon.

The aim of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of professional nurses regarding workplace violence in a private healthcare facility in order to develop guidelines to address workplace violence in such a facility. A qualitative, explorative, contextual and descriptive study was conducted, using the Critical Social Theory as the paradigm. Data were gathered from professional nurses that have experienced workplace violence utilizing narratives. Fourteen narrative interviews were done until data was saturated. The data was transcribed verbatim and Tesch’s method of thematic synthesis was used to analyse the data. The three themes that emerged from the data were: Professional nurses acknowledge the existence of workplace violence where they work, Participants described the effect of workplace violence on themselves, others and the work environment, and Participants discussed their views regarding management of violence in the workplace. A thick description of the data with a literature control was provided. Thereafter inferences were made regarding the main themes of the guidelines and these focussed on: Preventing and addressing workplace violence by Nursing Service Managers; Preventing and addressing workplace violence by Nurse Unit Managers and Empowering professional nurses to address workplace violence. To ensure rigour and trustworthiness of the study, the researcher used Lincoln and Guba’s criteria namely: credibility, dependability, conformability and transferability. To protect the right and dignity of the participants and to safeguard the integrity of the study the researcher complied with the following ethical principles: beneficence, non- maleficence, autonomy, justice, veracity, privacy, and confidentiality. The limitations of this study were that data was collected from only one category of nurses and only one private healthcare facility was used. Recommendations from this study include implementation of the guidelines to establish their effectiveness. The findings of this study can be used to empower professional nurses to deal with workplace violence and to prevent the short and long term effects of workplace violence on the individual, the organization and the community. Nursing education institutions can also incorporate workplace violence into their curriculum to increase the awareness of students regarding this phenomenon.

In some instances they request extensions to their leaves when they are already on leave. They do not report back for duties at the end of the leave period instead they provide reasons which warrant that the leave be extended. Subsequently, nurses who are on duty have to continue working because there is no-one to relieve the mand work needs to be done. A threatening situation which could lead to patients being left unattended tends to emerge under these circumstances. Hence in some instances nurses are called from other clinics to assist. Some employees absent themselves without leave and management does not appear to be taking action against such conduct. This leads to poor quality of health care in nursing which is a matter of concern to the community, to management and to the policy-makers. A qualitative research method was used in this study, in order to investigate the cause for high demand for leave at B.J. Vorster Hospital. Data collection was undertaken through interviews. The study found that the high demand for leave is attributed to fatigue resulting from huge workloads, claims of entitlement to leave, need to extend weekends due to family responsibilities.
