- Description: The Kalimba, they say, is a comparatively new to this district and people. They have recently begun to learn it from the Nsenga at Fort Jameson where this player had gone to work on a Europen farm there in 1922. "You always call me 'dear' with your mouth, but what kind of 'dear' is this if you do not let me sleep with you?" This is a pleasnt little melody set against an appropriate accompaniment. The player's old voice does not do his own melody credit, as so often happens among folk singers, and it should be performed by a younger person to bring out its virtue. Love song with Kalimba Mbira (nine notes)

- Description: Pounding with three pestles to one mortar. Six or seven girls stand around the mortar and take turns tp pound. One girl on each repeat of the tune, throws her pestle up into the air to the next on her left, this girl catches it in mid air and first pounds lightly on the edge of the mortar (the sound of which can be clearly heard) and then in the mortar until it is her turn to throw it on to her neighbor who repeats the process. Since the pestles weigh about 20 lbs. each, this game at the mortar takes considerable skill and strength. Pounding song with mortar and two pestles

- Description: The Ugubu was a popular instrument with the Zulu of Natal several generations ago but few are now left in Natal. With the exception of one or two minor details this instrument is in the same as that of the Zulu. The chief modification is the use of a straining bridge to increase the tension of the bark string. This bow was made of a lenght of Tete reed 5 ft. 2 1/4 inches long and about 1 1/4 ins. diameter, and had an unusual method of straining the single string. There was a small bridge inserted between the reed and the string near the lower end and the resonating gourd was attached by means of a wore which also acted as a moveable tuning device dividing the string into two segements. The top segement was 3 ft. 10 ins. long and emitted a note of 71 vs. (81 vs. when stopped by clasping between the finger and thumb). The lower segment was not used. The interval between the two notes used is 220 cents. Self delectative song with Ugubu, musical bow, stressed and resonated
