Exploring teachers’ attitudes to implementing blended learning: a case study

- Description: One of the many characteristics of the 21st century learner is that they are highly technologically skilled. This characteristic poses today’s teachers with many challenges in order to teach these learners and create optimal learning experiences. It is evident that teachers have their own preferred teaching methods which they believe work best and some teachers teach the way that they were taught at school in ways that have become part of their habitus. Blended learning is a teaching method that can promote effective learning experiences in the 21st century learning environment. This study focussed on teachers’ experiences with blended learning and their current ideas on how learners learn optimally and whether the practice of blended learning changed their ideas of learning. Furthermore, the study determined the teachers’ present technology acceptance and established teachers’ personal views regarding the challenges that teachers face to teach 21st century skills, what they think 21st century teaching is about and new insights on dealing with these challenges. Through experiencing blended learning teachers who made use of a textbook based teaching method made shifts not only to a blended approach, but also shifted their thinking away from what they prefer to what learners get out of the learning experience. Although challenges occur when using a blended teaching approach, their experiences with blended learning were mostly positive and they found learners to be more involved in the learning process. These outcomes created feelings of worthiness in the teachers since they create such positive learning opportunities for their learners. Although the teachers made shifts, some teachers continue to have a fear of technology since they had not received adequate training to incorporate technology into their teaching approaches. It is crucial for the DBE and schools to provide teachers with opportunities to improve their technological skills in order for teachers to create opportunities for blended learning experiences for the 21st century learner

- Description: Blended learning is an educational approach which integrates seemingly distinct educational approaches such as face-to-face and online experiences. In a blended learning environment, the classroom lectures can, for example, be augmented with learning material opened in a variety of technologically delivered formats. Brain-compatible learning is an approach to education which stems from a combination of neuroscience and educational psychology. Brain compatible learning is not a formalised education approach or recipe for teachers', instead it provides a `set of principles and a base of knowledge and skills upon which we can make better decisions about the learning process. While the electiveness of education based on brain-compatible learning principles have been proven in a classroom environment, very little knowledge exists regarding its use in an e-learning environment. The purpose of this research was to determine whether an e-learning intervention which was designed according to brain-compatible learning principles would have an elect on student motivation to learn and on student achievement in the subject Technical programming 1. An e-learning based educational intervention which incorporated several brain-compatible learning principles was designed and administered as a controlled experiment intervention. The impact of the research experiment was measured both qualitatively using an purpose-designed instrument and quantitatively through an analysis of the formal assessments for this subject. The findings of this study, namely that brain-compatible learning principles can be used in an e-learning environment and that e-learning material which adheres to brain-compatible education principles have a positive elect on Technical Programming 1 students' achievement and motivation to learn, appear to be meaningful contributions to the current debate on blended learning.

- Description: ICTs have had a tremendous impact on our educational environment. There have been a huge number of developments and support in implementation of ICT in Higher Education teaching and learning, also referred to as e-learning. Similarly there appears to be quite a number of research conducted on the use of ICTs in blended learning settings worldwide and as well as in South Africa. Very little research however, has focussed on the experiences of lecturers with e-learning, specifically as it relates to Learning Management Systems (LMS). In trying to meet the requirements of its academic programmes and be in line with new developments worldwide, the University which is the focus of this study pilot projected the use of an LMS in a blended learning approach which integrates face-to-face classes with Blackboard, an ICT-based system or tool. Following the implementation of the pilot project, this study explores the experiences of lecturers in their blended learning environments at this university in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The research design was that of an interpretative paradigm within a qualitative research approach in a case study methodology. Purposive sampling of six lecturers from departments within faculties across two campuses was done. The data was gathered through interviews, a follow-up questionnaire and document analysis was employed. Using Critical and Social Realism as meta-theories the study employed aspects of Activity Theory as substantive theory to understand particular experiences of blended learning environments and identify conditions which enable and constrain engagement in these environments so as to explore potential lessons to inform the kind of educational support which could be offered to facilitate uptake of the LMS.
