"The head administrator has been to tell the chief that Filipi must report any illnesses. Itiani has been wonderfully cured by the doctor. Zandamela when he answered him, said, we are not surprised as we know the doctor helps us. Tell the policeman and the policemen will tell Simoinzhi, the clerk. He swore at the Serget Chikonowe.   • Description: The girls wore rattles strapped to their right ankles. The costume was composed of rather long cotton blouses, skirts, trousers and grass skirts over all. The drum was hung onto a stick planted into the soft sand and was played with two light sticks by a blind drummer. Luzi Chowane is the leader of the Ngodo dancers and composed this item for the girls to dance, directing it by whistle. He altered the tone of the whistle by placing finger and thumb on either side of the fipple. This can be heard best during the drum solo. As with so much African dance music the sight of the dance is often more entertaining than the sound of the dance music. This movement lasrs 4m. 50s. when they give 'cries', followed by the second movement at 5m. 20s. which in turn is followed by short 'tokozela' cries at 6m. 40s. Young girls dance with drum Muchinga, clapping with wooden clappers, hand clapping and whistle.

  • Description: Two pairs, of small girls who had previously danced the "Chingomane" danced in front of the line of dancers during the "Mabadlha". This appears to be an inovation of recent times. During this long movement the dancers perform their pas de deux and the music must continue until all have had their turn. Afterwards the song is sung in the background to end the movement. "The way you are living is because you are clever. To be chief you must not get drunk or you will weep when your chieftanship disappears.   • Description: The first Msitso was the composition of the distinguished and talented muscian, Komukomu, who died at Banguza over a year ago, but who recorded for me on several occasions and led the combined orchestra of Timbila to Bulawayo and Salisbury in Southern Rhodesia as well as on many other important occassions. His was one of the great names in Chopi music and an honoured composer over the last 20 years or more. His Timbila orchestra at Filipi Banguza's village has not yet settled down to a new leader after his death.   • Description: Komukomu started this attractive melody very quickly while a few members of the orchestra interpolated occasional notes. When we recorded this item they played rather more loudly than before and lost something of the charm of this solo performance. As the road to Regulo Banguza's village was at the time impassable, Komukomu and his musicians walked over to Mavila's village with their instruments for this recording, a distance of about six miles. The drift across the river was temporarily out of use on account of recent floods. Some say that the loud noise of the drum spoils the music. This item could give substance to their objection, but Banguza's village the drum is preferred.
