  • Description: This cider is made from the fruit of the Caju tree, (also spelt Cazhu and Cashew). The fruit consists of an apple, which is fermented for cider, and an external nut, the cashew nut, which is attached to the tip of the apple in a crescent shaped pod. The nut itself is edible but the hard pod in which it is encased is impregnated with virulent oil which must first be expelled by fire or distillation before the nut can be cracked open. It now forms an important part of the local economy. The cashew apples rippen in November and their harvest marks a time of annual indulgence for the Chopi and is frequently mentioned in song.   • Description: This item was recorded in the dance arenaat the consolidated main Reef Gold mine near Johannesburf. The large double bass Timbila (metal drum resonated) makes a full sounded recording. The leader and composer, Teni Maposi, from Regulo Canda's village has for many years been the leader of this mine's Chopi orchestra, over 400 miles from their home district. Other items by the same orchestra led by Teni Maposi at the mine have been published in the 'Music of Africa' series, 'African Dances of the Witwatersrand Gold Mines'. At the opening of the item the singers shout in their own language:- "Beer! Beer! we want at the time we want it! Beer!"   • Description: Composed by the good player and maker of Timbila at the time working at the Robinson mine in Johannesburg. Hi is frequently called upon from all over Chopiland to compose new tunes for the Timbila orchestras, like the famous Katini wa Nyamombe Zavala, who died in 1948. This Mzeno was played in the absence of the composer. Chambini was already an outstanding player and composer of promise and by 1963 was leading performer of the Zavala district. His compositions lack the clarity of melody of either Katini or Komukomu, but are much appreciated by Chopi players. Orchestral dance with Timbila xylophones.

  • Description: This is the Njari version of the famous "Ilanga la Shona" which became so popular when first sung in Bulawayo in about 1946. Several versions in different languages have appeared since then. The original was sung to the guitar and this setting to the traditional instrument is particularly interesting. The Karanga or 'Shona', as opposed to the Nguni speaking Ndebele of the South west of the country, do not use the letter 'L' but change it to 'R'. Topical song ith Njari (Mbira).

  • Description: Although the message drums of central and west Africa are unknown south of the Congo basin, young herd boys have long used a whistling language in which the tone of the phrases they wish to convet are whistled to each other at some distance, often at a safe distance on the other side of a river because much of what they whistle may be humorous or even disrespectful to the stronger or older of the small fry. The first part is a whistled conversation, usually done at some distance apart.   • Description: This recording clearly demonstrates the progress of a single item of music over 20 years among an entirley aural (non-literate) musical people. For purposes of the recording the singers sang each verse only once and not the usual twice each. As a rule Mabandla movements are not allocated interesting melodies as they are preoccupied with pas-de-deux performances which may last several minutes and the main interest is focussed on the individual dancers rather than the music.
