Don’t let the little man live in your head for free: an interpretive phenomenological analysis of seafarers with reportedly high levels of well-being

- Description: The mental health of seafarers has become a growing issue of concern and has attracted the attention of researchers in recent times. Seafarers are predominantly men, spend months at sea with little to no contact with loved ones ashore, and usually must reside in confined spaces that often contain substantial levels of noise and heat. The underlying causes of mental illness among seafarers are known. Some of the causes include sleep deprivation, occupational stress, marital/relationship problems, fatigue, the threat of piracy, psychosocial workload, loneliness, social isolation, separation from families, lack of shore leave, cultural issues, and job security. Despite these stressors, there are many men and women seafarers who flourish in the industry and enjoy their careers. Very little research has been conducted into the well-being practices of those seafarers who enjoy high levels of well-being. This study explores the lived experiences of a group of seafarers with reportedly high levels of psychological well-being, as well as their experiences of workplace stressors and mental health interventions offered by the industry. This study is an interpretive phenomenological analysis, which is epistemologically underpinned by phenomenology, hermeneutics and idiography. Results revealed four focus areas: general lived experiences across two worlds and how this relates to identity, what seafarers with reportedly high levels of psychological well-being experience as stressors, well-being practices of these seafarers and how these seafarers experience and make sense of mental health interventions they have come across. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Humanities, Psychology, 2022

Phenomenology: preconceptions and experiences of non-chemists at Rhodes University using milk paint

- Description: There exists an ever-increasing crisis in science education where students experience disinterest because of an inability to grasp true understanding of scientific subjects, and therefore there should be a call to increase the research of phenomenology in combination with science education. A rebalance and paradigm shift in the focus of the modes of teaching could result in a great improvement in the learning, comprehension, and intellectual self-confidence of students interested in the sciences. To study this, three research questions were established: How is chemistry perceived by non-chemists; what is the experience of the participants’ during the chemistry practical in a laboratory and; do the participants’ perspectives about chemistry change during the experience. The performed study consisted of a chemistry practical, two art works and, in some cases, an interview. Nine participants were asked to create the art under specific instructions of points of focus, namely their preconceptions prior to the practical (Artwork 1) and their lived experience during the practical (Artwork 2). Participants’ artworks were examined using methods of visual semiotics and classical art analysis techniques, looking at line, shape, and colour choice. The iterative analysis of the interviews from participants 1, 2, 7, and 9 coded with ATLAS.ti 7 software, led to the emergence of themes that constitute the core of the participants’ experience. This phenomenological study presents a path to engage the non-chemist with processes taking place in the laboratory by using ‘Kitchen Chemistry’ and illustrates how a phenomenological engagement with chemistry can make the subject more applicable to the general population of non-chemists.

- Description: This thesis aims to establish a model of psychotherapy that is based on experience, but which takes social structure into account. To do this it first sets up a theoretical model of psychotherapy. Thereafter the model is used to analyse four protocols as a way of examining its effectiveness. The analysis of the protocols provides the basis for coming to certain conclusions about the nature of psychotherapy. The theoretical phase first examines the area traditionally known as etiology, but here the approach is from a broadly existential perspective. Thus this section starts by proposing a view of human nature, and then it goes on to say how this nature comes to be disrupted. The influence of the broader social context upon human existence is also considered here. Secondly, there is an attempt to understand how psychotherapy works. Drawing on existential and cultural anthropological material, various themes of psychotherapy are examined, and these are then placed within their social context. Finally, the theoretical phase brings together the themes emerging from the two foregoing sections and integrates them into a single model of "etiology" and "cure". In the following chapter, the adequacy of this model is examined by using it to analyse four protocols written by subjects on their experience of therapy. In the final chapter various conclusions are drawn.
