- Description: While precarious and poorly-regulated forms of employment are on the increase worldwide, the patterns vary significantly over time and space. This study sought to understand employees’ perceptions of non-standard employment (NSE), the reasons why employers resort to NSE and why they use particular types of NSE. In addition, the research explored how labour law protections for NSE are applied in particular workplaces. Drawing on the regulation approach, which provides a conceptual framework to explain changes in production and employment relationships under specific spatio-temporal conditions, this study focused on three companies in Makhanda. Furthermore, this study employed a qualitative research method to explore the employees’ perceptions on non-standard work. This was done by using an interpretive approach to explore how workers experience NSE and how Eastern Cape citizens in Makhanda navigate the scourge of unemployment and exploitation in the labour market. Moreover, the research investigated how employees experience the efficacy of their employment rights in the workplace. The employment rights observed in the study include (among others) leave, contract of employment and collective bargaining; all of which are provisions in the Labour Relations Act. The findings in the study do validate the use of NSE as a ‘tool’ to curb high unemployment. However, the study finds that the positive result of job creation does not signify job security for non-standard workers, instead beneath the rhetoric of job creation and investment, lies hidden the exploitation of vulnerable groups of citizens and extension of precarious forms of employment. This is because businesses engage in economic competition locally and globally. Therefore, in order to successfully compete against other, employer’s cut on labour expenses by adopting a “race to the bottom,” the effect of which is paying employees below the minimum wage. Moreover, this study opposes the argument that NSE is a stepping stone to permanent employment. The conditions which prevail in NSE are distinctly different from those in the Standard Employment Relationship (SER), making it difficult for employees to transition to a new labour market. Maintaining the façade: the disconnect between policy and practice in heritage resources management in Makhanda, South Africa

- Description: Cultural heritage is globally acknowledged as having the potential to contribute to positive economic, environmental, political, and social impacts (Graham, 2002). In the South African context, cultural heritage management is rooted in colonial and apartheid narratives that mark a large part of the country's history. Post-apartheid transformation processes have driven new approaches to managing heritage to represent the shared collective narrative of a democratic South Africa. This transformation includes the formation of the three-tiered South African heritage management system by the National Heritage Resources Agency (NHRA) in 1999 and a rethinking of what heritage constitutes and whose heritage matters. Despite the extensive cultural heritage resources in the country, literature concerning the management of these assets in the context of the urban environment and urban planning and management is limited (Donaldson, 2001; Donaldson et al., 2013; Buchanan & Donaldson, 2021; Kruger & Donaldson, 2021). This research explores the built environment heritage resources in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in the Eastern Cape province. Makhanda possesses a rich and varied cultural heritage landscape, including over 70 Provincial Heritage Resources in the form of built environment heritage. The case study provides a perfect laboratory for investigating the various threats and opportunities in the local context that severely affect heritage management. The research used a mixed-method approach to generate data. Primary data were collected through a field survey of built environment heritage resources, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups. Secondary data sources comprised government policy documents, by-laws, reports, research papers and newspaper articles. In the localised context, findings illustrated several challenges affecting local heritage management, centring mainly on the balance between heritage resource management and overall urban management. Findings identified challenges included a poor acknowledgement of the nuances in local history, questions on the effectiveness of legislation, governance and management issues, conflicting demands for social services and urban development, and building maintenance. Heritage resources are acknowledged as a potential tool to meet the local community's needs, and opportunities for developing the heritage sector were also identified. These suggestions include information sharing and cooperation between the municipality, community and various role players, community education, tourism product development, institutional development through skills development, the incorporation of intangible heritage, and the acknowledgement of more inclusive forms of cultural heritage. Overall, the findings indicate that the disconnection in heritage management, urban management practices, and municipal dysfunction in Makhanda threatens the built environment heritage and the local sense of place. Native-range studies on insect herbivores associated with African Lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula) in South Africa: prospects for biological control in Australia

- Description: Eragrostis curvula (Schrad.) Nees. (African Lovegrass) is an African native species of grass that was intentionally introduced for pasture in Australia. It has since escaped cultivation and has become widespread and highly invasive. Eragrostis curvula has been recorded in every state and territory in Australia where it has altered fire regimes, disrupted nutrient cycles and can reduce livestock carrying capacity by up to 50%. The Centre for Biological Control at Rhodes University and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries have been working in collaboration to identify and screen herbivorous insects as biological control agents for E. curvula in Australia. Native-range surveys were conducted between 2021 and 2022 on E. curvula at twenty-two sites across South Africa to identify herbivorous natural enemies associated with it. Species accumulation curves were generated to ensure adequate sampling was performed to identify all the insects associated with E. curvula. Twenty-nine non-target grass species were surveyed simultaneously to determine the field-host range of the natural enemies associated with the target weed. Herbivorous natural enemies were prioritised as possible biological control agents against E. curvula in Australia based on field-host range, predicted efficacy and climatic suitability. Four insect species were consistently found on E. curvula, two of which were herbivorous, as well as a parasitoid and a detritivore. Species accumulation curves show that the insect community was adequately sampled in South Africa. The two herbivorous insects were identified to the lowest taxonomic level using COI barcoding. Both species are undescribed phytophagous wasps in the genus Tetramesa (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae). Because Tetramesa species have been shown to be host specific and highly damaging in previous biological control programs for other invasive grass weeds, we assessed their suitability as candidate biological control agents for use on E. curvula in Australia. Both Tetramesa species (“sp. 4” and “sp. 5”) were found on several native congeners under field conditions in South Africa. Congeneric South African-native non-target grass species were used as phylogenetic proxies to assess the risk posed to Australian native Eragrostis species. This highlighted three non-target Australian native Eragrostis species, namely: E. parviflora (R. Br.) Trin., E. leptocarpa Benth. fl., and E. trachycarpa Benth., that are at risk of being attacked by the two candidate agents based on their phylogenetic proximity to E. curvula. Predicted efficacy trials were conducted at five long-term repeat survey sites and revealed that Tetramesa sp. 4 does not reduce the probability of E. curvula tiller survival or reproduction, while Tetramesa sp. 5 does not reduce the probability of tiller reproduction but does increase the probability of tiller survival. This result was unexpected and may be a plant compensatory response to herbivory. The sites where both Tetramesa species were collected in South Africa are climatically similar to the invaded range of E. curvula in Australia, and as such, the Tetramesa spp. are likely to be suitably adapted to the climate where they would be released in Australia. These results suggest that both Tetramesa species associated with E. curvula may have too broad a host range to be used as biological control agents in Australia. However, further quarantine-based host-range assessments on Australian native Eragrostis species are recommended to confirm this. - Description: The aim of this study is twofold: first, to understand meta-ethnography as a tool of synthesis; second, to use this methodology to explore perceptions of African musical arts education in the Foundation and Intermediate Phases in government schools in South Africa after 2011. Meta-ethnography is a methodology used to synthesise qualitative material by means of seven distinct phases: getting started; deciding what is relevant to the initial interest; reading the studies; determining how they are related; translating the studies into one another; weaving them together into a synthesis; and expressing the synthesis. This study synthesises five articles discovered through a deep search of the literature. Through the process of synthesis, a narrative emerges that connects past prejudice in music education in South Africa to present day educational inequality, one that looks towards a future in which children’s agency is harnessed in the multicultural world we live in to teach music in a relevant, contextual way. The synthesis extracts perceptions on colonialism and apartheid; educational access; post-apartheid curricula; music education pedagogies; informal music making; children’s games and agency; into the classroom; and how to assess. These themes weave a clear perspective on African musical arts education, and a reciprocal synthesis of the views of the articles’ authors. Phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages from coastal and inland lakes of South Africa

- Description: Freshwater lakes are generally defined as permanent natural standing water bodies, with some of them having a direct and indirect connection with groundwater, rivers, and the ocean. Freshwater lakes provide essential socio-economic and ecological goods and services including recreation, aesthetic, support aquatic biodiversity, food in a form of fisheries and water for domestic use. Given their critical role in sustainability in providing socio-economic services, freshwater lakes are among the most threatened ecosystems globally due to intense human impacts over the last decades. South Africa has limited freshwater lakes, which according to the National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA 2018), we know little about their current biology except historic aquatic biodiversity studies conducted in the early 1940s. There are no management strategies in place to protect and conserve freshwater lake biodiversity and important ecosystem services. This thesis aims to: (1) produce a biodiversity inventory of phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate species and, (2) investigate important environmental drivers responsible for phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate species composition from six South African freshwater lakes. It was hypothesized that the three lake types will show different phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrates species composition attributed by the geographical region (coastal and inland lake) and related physico-chemical parameters. Study sites consisted of two Northern KwaZulu-Natal coastal lakes (hereafter Coastal Lakes, CL) i.e., Lake Sibaya, Lake Mzingazi; two fresh inland lakes (hereafter Fresh Inland Lakes, FIL) i.e., Lake Banagher fresh and Lake Tevrede Se Pan; and two inland salt lakes (hereafter Salt Inland Lakes, SIL) i.e., Lake Banagher salt and Lake Chrissiesmeer, all inland lakes are situated in Mpumalanga province, together with other Pans making up the Mpumalanga Lake District of South Africa. The study sites were categorized based on their geographical position i.e., coastal vs inland and physico-chemical characteristics i.e., the presence and absence of aquatic vegetation, dominate substrate, salinity and different physico-chemical concentration i.e., Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen. Aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected from four littoral zone sites (< 1-meter depth) around each lake, whereas phytoplankton samples were collected from four water column sites (> 5-meters depth) and (0.5-meter depth) from the water surface at each lake during summer and winter season. The results were consistent with our hypothesis that both phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate species composition were influenced by physico-chemical parameters and that the differences in salinity concentration and aquatic vegetation between CL, FIL, and SIL were the driving factors for phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate species composition. In summary, one hundred and twenty-two phytoplankton taxa were collected and identified during this study, belonging to seven Phyla which included Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Chrysophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta, and Cryptophyta. The most abundant phytoplankton groups were Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta. Phytoplankton relative taxa abundance, Pielou’s evenness, taxa richness, and Shannon diversity were significantly different between lake types. Aquatic macroinvertebrates, on the other hand, summed up to 10 orders, 67 families, and 80 taxa. The most abundant group were the order Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Odonata, and Gastropoda. Aquatic macroinvertebrate relative taxa abundance, taxa richness, and Shannon diversity were also significantly different between lake types. Aquatic macroinvertebrate relative taxa abundance, Pielous evenness, and Shannon diversity index were not significant between seasons, and only taxa richness was significant. Canonical analysis of principal coordinates (CAP) results further showed unique and distinct phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrates community composition between lake types. The present study provides baseline biodiversity inventory (or species list) for important lake ecosystems biological indicators i.e., phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrates and species composition in relation to lake type for six freshwater lakes in South Africa. Furthermore, the study provides empirical evidence that will inform policy and the development of management strategies for freshwater lakes in South Africa which is currently missing. The current study will also contribute to the next National Biodiversity Assessment Report (2024), concerning the freshwater lakes biological data deficiency noted in the previous NBA (2018) report. Given their critical role in sustainability in providing socio-economic services, freshwater lakes are among the most threatened ecosystems globally due to intense human impacts over the last decades. South Africa has limited freshwater lakes, which according to the National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA 2018), we know little about their current biology except historic aquatic biodiversity studies conducted in the early 1940s. There are no management strategies in place to protect and conserve freshwater lake biodiversity and important ecosystem services. This thesis aims to: (1) produce a biodiversity inventory of phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate species and, (2) investigate important environmental drivers responsible for phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate species composition from six South African freshwater lakes. It was hypothesized that the three lake types will show different phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrates species composition attributed by the geographical region (coastal and inland lake) and related physico-chemical parameters. Study sites consisted of two Northern KwaZulu-Natal coastal lakes (hereafter Coastal Lakes, CL) i.e., Lake Sibaya, Lake Mzingazi; two fresh inland lakes (hereafter Fresh Inland Lakes, FIL) i.e., Lake Banagher fresh and Lake Tevrede Se Pan; and two inland salt lakes (hereafter Salt Inland Lakes, SIL) i.e., Lake Banagher salt and Lake Chrissiesmeer, all inland lakes are situated in Mpumalanga province, together with other Pans making up the Mpumalanga Lake District of South Africa. The study sites were categorized based on their geographical position i.e., coastal vs inland and physico-chemical characteristics i.e., the presence and absence of aquatic vegetation, dominate substrate, salinity and different physico-chemical concentration i.e., Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen. Aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected from four littoral zone sites (< 1-meter depth) around each lake, whereas phytoplankton samples were collected from four water column sites (> 5-meters depth) and (0.5-meter depth) from the water surface at each lake during summer and winter season. The results were consistent with our hypothesis that both phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate species composition were influenced by physico-chemical parameters and that the differences in salinity concentration and aquatic vegetation between CL, FIL, and SIL were the driving factors for phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate species composition. In summary, one hundred and twenty-two phytoplankton taxa were collected and identified during this study, belonging to seven Phyla which included Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Chrysophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta, and Cryptophyta. The most abundant phytoplankton groups were Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta. Phytoplankton relative taxa abundance, Pielou’s evenness, taxa richness, and Shannon diversity were significantly different between lake types. Aquatic macroinvertebrates, on the other hand, summed up to 10 orders, 67 families, and 80 taxa. The most abundant group were the order Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Odonata, and Gastropoda. Aquatic macroinvertebrate relative taxa abundance, taxa richness, and Shannon diversity were also significantly different between lake types. Aquatic macroinvertebrate relative taxa abundance, Pielous evenness, and Shannon diversity index were not significant between seasons, and only taxa richness was significant. Canonical analysis of principal coordinates (CAP) results further showed unique and distinct phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrates community composition between lake types. The present study provides baseline biodiversity inventory (or species list) for important lake ecosystems biological indicators i.e., phytoplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrates and species composition in relation to lake type for six freshwater lakes in South Africa. Furthermore, the study provides empirical evidence that will inform policy and the development of management strategies for freshwater lakes in South Africa which is currently missing. The current study will also contribute to the next National Biodiversity Assessment Report (2024), concerning the freshwater lakes biological data deficiency noted in the previous NBA (2018) report. The training’ data collected was compared to previous literature, including studies that also focused on match-play. Furthermore, players were categorized into forwards and backs, allowing for the comparison between the two playing categories. An exploratory, descriptive, observational, and comparative research design was used for the current study. The physical and physiological demands of eighteen women Rugby union players (eight forwards and ten backs) aged between 18 – 36 years old were assessed during training (for a total of nine sessions). To inform the participants’ characteristics, the players’ demographic, and anthropometric characteristics (age, stature, and body mass) were obtained. Using GPS and Zephyr technology the players’ training physical (time spent in speed zones, maximum speed, total distance travelled, number of impacts in the various impact zones) and physiological (heart rate) demands were explored. Statistical analysis methods including descriptive, independent t-test, one-way and two-way ANOVA tests were employed to analyse the data and evaluate the differences between forwards and backs. The mean age and stature for all players was 25,44±5,6 years and 1,60±0,06 m respectively, with no significant differences found between backs and forwards. With regards to body mass, forwards weighed 82,0±9,4 kg while backs weighed significantly lighter at 58,0±5,8 kg. Significant differences (p < 0,05) were found for all players in the time spent in speed zones and the number of impacts in impact zones. When all forwards’ and backs’ physical and physiological demands were compared the results showed no significant differences. The average time spent in all six speed zones combined was 11,41 and 11,62 mins for forwards and backs, respectively. The maximum speeds reached by forwards (21,35±5,72 km/h) and backs (22,85±3,88 km/h) were similar. All players combined travelled an average total distance of 2,14±0,76 km. The total number of impacts in all six impact zones, totalled 116 impacts for forwards and 97 for backs. Heart rate responses recorded for forwards and backs were 139±15 bpm and 134±13 bpm. Based on the findings of this study, the training intensity of amateur women’s Rugby union was lower than the demands experienced in the training and match-play of previous research. It was also observed that there was no specificity with regards to the training programs allocated between forwards and backs of this study. Round bin collection was the waste collection type pertaining to the highest work-related risk of musculoskeletal development. Public cleansers and flatbed truck collectors' results displayed lower task-related risks associated in relation to the other occupations. Significant differences were found between the groups, particularly between waste collectors and drivers [had high workload outputs] in relation to public cleansers [low workload] for both perceptual workload tools. A significant difference was found in the mental and physical demands, as well as the organisational constraints and quantitative workloads. Mechanics showed no significant differences between groups but had high levels of frustration. Another finding in the study is that fans use the bad performances of black players as an excuse to racially abuse them via social media platforms. Social media in the 21st century has now accelerated the rate at which racism is perpetrated as fans now have more access to players through their accounts. This kind of behaviour usually occurs when one spouse anticipates a divorce or when the final divorce order is pending. In this context then, this thesis aims to critically analyse the effectiveness of the legal remedies available to spouses who are negatively affected by the dissipation of marital assets in marriage in community of property and marriage out of community of property with accrual. In this thesis the question is asked: does the current law adequately protect one spouse from another spouse unfairly hiding or dissipating assets from their estate to prevent the equitable distribution of these assets to the other spouse on divorce? In order to answer this question, this thesis proceeds by examining each of the remedies in detail, looking specifically at the statutory remedies set out in the Matrimonial Property Act 88 of 1984, specifically those contained in ss 8, 15 and 20 of that Act. It also considers remedies found in the common law. Ultimately, the study finds that these remedies do not provide adequate protection to spouses affected by the dissipation of marital assets and looks at the particular reasons for this finding. The study then concludes by proposing reforms to provide better protection to affected spouses. The Therapeutic Sandstory Method (TSM) involves the innovative integration of a variety of tenets when working with children– constructing sandworlds, storytelling, the reflection of stories and coherent therapeutic documents in therapy collectively facilitating the healing process. This novel method enables children to translate and communicate their own personal experiences and traumas into a concrete form through storytelling and metaphoric connections constructed in their sandworld. It is anticipated that the TSM is a brief yet feasible, child-centered therapeutic engagement designed to continue the therapeutic process outside of the therapy setting, making it ideally suited for children and adolescents from under-resourced communities. The results of the study revealed improved interpersonal functioning and emotional wellbeing after eight sessions. The effects of different shift patterns on nurses’ sleep-wake behaviours in selected, private healthcare facilities

- Description: Nurses are required to work shifts to provide 24-hour care, in which they complete physically and mentally demanding tasks. The length and type of shifts, particularly night shifts interfere with the natural sleep-wake behaviours, leading to extended wakefulness and overall reduced sleep, and increase the likelihood of sleepiness during subsequent shifts. This can in turn affected various cognitive processes such attention, vigilance and alertness, which are necessary during the care process. Sleepiness as a result of working shifts has also been associated with an increased risk accidents and error during the delivery of care. Given the unique demands and ways in which workplaces are structured, each context arranges its shifts in unique ways and thus, in order to determine how to manage the effects of shift work, it is important to understand how it affects self-reported fatigue and sleep, of, in this case, nurses. While there has been extensive research on this in the global north, to date, there has been limited research aimed at examining the effects of shift work on nurses’ sleep-wake behaviours and fatigue in the South African context. Therefore, the aim of this study is to characterise shift arrangements in selected private facilities and explore its effects on private healthcare nurses. This study adopted a cross-sectional, survey design using an amended version of Standard Shiftwork Index. The questionnaire included demographic and shift details and explored the impact of the shift systems on nurse sleep-wake behaviours and disturbances and fatigue and workload. It was distributed among shift working nurses registered with the South African Nursing Council across three selected, private, healthcare facilities in the Eastern Cape, over a two-month period. The responses were analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics, with open-ended questions analysed using a thematic analysis. A total of 51 nurses completed the survey. Nurses worked 12-hour shifts which included night shifts and day shifts with fixed start and end times. Over time was commonly reported and generally, nurses reported having very little control over their shift arrangements. Overall, nurses slept less than what they reported they needed on duty days, with nurses working both day and night shifts reporting to sleep less than the globally recommended required sleep. This was compensated for by longer sleep durations during days off. The data collection revealed that three different shift arrangements were in use, including permanent day shifts, permanent night shifts and rotating shift work including nights, with permanent night nurses working significantly more consecutive shifts (seven) than the other two shift types and having significantly more days off (seven) as well. While there were no significant differences in self-reported sleep across the three shift types, permanent night nurses were found to have the shortest sleep. - Description: Nurses are required to work shifts to provide 24-hour care, in which they complete physically and mentally demanding tasks. The length and type of shifts, particularly night shifts interfere with the natural sleep-wake behaviours, leading to extended wakefulness and overall reduced sleep, and increase the likelihood of sleepiness during subsequent shifts. This can in turn affected various cognitive processes such attention, vigilance and alertness, which are necessary during the care process. Sleepiness as a result of working shifts has also been associated with an increased risk accidents and error during the delivery of care. Given the unique demands and ways in which workplaces are structured, each context arranges its shifts in unique ways and thus, in order to determine how to manage the effects of shift work, it is important to understand how it affects self-reported fatigue and sleep, of, in this case, nurses. While there has been extensive research on this in the global north, to date, there has been limited research aimed at examining the effects of shift work on nurses’ sleep-wake behaviours and fatigue in the South African context. Therefore, the aim of this study is to characterise shift arrangements in selected private facilities and explore its effects on private healthcare nurses. This study adopted a cross-sectional, survey design using an amended version of Standard Shiftwork Index. The questionnaire included demographic and shift details and explored the impact of the shift systems on nurse sleep-wake behaviours and disturbances and fatigue and workload. It was distributed among shift working nurses registered with the South African Nursing Council across three selected, private, healthcare facilities in the Eastern Cape, over a two-month period. The responses were analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics, with open-ended questions analysed using a thematic analysis. A total of 51 nurses completed the survey. Nurses worked 12-hour shifts which included night shifts and day shifts with fixed start and end times. Over time was commonly reported and generally, nurses reported having very little control over their shift arrangements. Overall, nurses slept less than what they reported they needed on duty days, with nurses working both day and night shifts reporting to sleep less than the globally recommended required sleep. This was compensated for by longer sleep durations during days off. The data collection revealed that three different shift arrangements were in use, including permanent day shifts, permanent night shifts and rotating shift work including nights, with permanent night nurses working significantly more consecutive shifts (seven) than the other two shift types and having significantly more days off (seven) as well. While there were no significant differences in self-reported sleep across the three shift types, permanent night nurses were found to have the shortest sleep. While these are important, its mental health effects are given attention in this dissertation. In particular, this is explored through social media platforms, which saw increased usage as a result of regulations on movement to slow the Virus’ spread. This is explored during the hard lockdown (or ‘Alert Level 5’) and further, focuses on young adults, key users of social media platforms. Max Weber’s ‘social action theory’ and Michel de Certeau’s ‘theory of everyday life’ are drawn on, which help to analyse social relations from an individual level; and are used to explore the kinds of expressions made on a social media platform, and what can be said in mental health terms. These theoretical frameworks are applied to a university “Confessions” page, used mostly by young adults, where submissions were made anonymously. Findings indicate a great deal of trauma associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, but also evidence of the emergence of collective responsibility. They show the immense sacrifices made by participants for the opportunity of an education, and provide a window into the kinds of subjectivities experienced by South African young adults. In this thesis, the evidence for the yield curve as a predictor is examine, specifically as a predictor for bear markets in the JSE stock market for 8 sub-sectoral indices. The study explores a dynamic market timing strategy for timing the South African stock market compared to a normal buy-and-hold strategy. First, probit models are estimated for each of the sectoral indices which did not prove to have tracked well all the bear market phases. Then a dynamic market timing portfolio is simulated against a buy-and-hold only strategy, the dynamic market timing portfolio proved to have outperformed a buy-and-hold strategy for almost all the indices. Thus, a Henriksson-Merton parametric model test which tests for market timing ability was done on these sub-indices. - Description: The discourse of identity and community are topics of interest to me. As a citizen living in post-apartheid South Africa, I am captivated by the re-emerging wisdom and knowledge of Nguni cultural philosophies and practices. My practice-based research is interested in a creative interpretation of these ancient philosophies and practices in the context of postcolonial life. The project in many ways re-members through observation of socio-political issues such as inequality, violence, and vandalism as reflections of internal challenges of the individual self in current reality. In essence, my discussion in this paper highlights the need for healing grief and loss for the well-being – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual – of society. Self-definition is the core of any community and we see this in the philosophy of the African proverb umntu ngumntu ngabantu, ‘I am because you are’. ‘I am’ is a set of beliefs that construct the individual self; our life’s course then becomes a constant molding of the body and the world around us. The wisdom of ubuntu was, and is, a catalyst for many African cultures, as this law recognizes each individual as important and equal in the community. As a descendant of various indigenous clans originating in Africa the well-being and balance of my being is determined by how much I know about who I am. Consequently, being a part of the generation that is experiencing the transitioning phases from apartheid I question the ways we are dealing with the residue of coloniality concerning all aspects of self; the physical, emotional, and mental bodies of self. My creative work is a reflection of the exercises I implemented to cultivate selfhood as a way to participate in and control my reality as a marginalized member of society. The different chapters touch on many intersecting theories about tools for healing/soothing the self. The creative process experimented with the various concepts embedded in the expression ‘I am because you are’. In the process of this research, I learned that knowing yourself is one of the principles of ubuntu, which teaches me that I cannot be or give what I do not have. The themes I explore through the above expression are self-love, self-acceptance, and self-respect using a creative lens. This practice-based research proposes a concept; the act of love as a decolonial gesture. My exhibition Vuleka Mhlaba Ndinegene1 utilizes visual language to convey the need for more conversations on healing using natural elements, as a way to make a connection between self, the natural environment, and community. In the first and second chapters, the paper focuses on practices employed by artists such as Lhola Amira, Guadalupe Maravilla, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Tony Gum, Lina Iris Viktor, and Aida Muleneh, to relate the various approaches to re-member the severed connection between self, nature, and community. Investigation into response of wheat genotypes to drought and optimum conditions in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

- Description: Wheat is generally one of the dominant crops globally, being mainly used for human food and livestock feed. Due to climate change, drought makes it challenging to produce enough wheat mostly under dryland production regions in South Africa. Drought stress has severely reduced wheat yield by up to 70 percent, and adversely compromised wheat grain quality. The adoption of drought-tolerant cultivars offers a sustainable and low-cost solution for increasing wheat yields and minimise importing the crop to meet national requirements. The main objective of this study was to investigate the response of different wheat genotypes to drought and optimum conditions in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Forty diverse wheat genotypes were evaluated in this study. The specific objectives were: (i) to evaluate the response of wheat genotypes under optimum and drought-stressed field conditions; (ii) to determine the effect of terminal drought stress on wheat grain quality composition; and (iii) to identify appropriate drought tolerance indices that can be used as selection tools under field conditions. This study was conducted in the field using a 5x8 alpha lattice design, replicated twice under two water regimes (drought and optimum) over two consecutive winter seasons of 2020 and 2021 at two different sites namely University of Fort Hare Research Farm in Alice, and Zanyokwe irrigation scheme in Keiskamahoek. Drought stress was imposed from 50% flowering up to physiological maturity. Data on agro-physiological traits such as duration to heading (DTH); flowering (DTF); maturity (DTM); plant height (HT); spike length (SL); number of spikelets per spike (SPS); kernels per spike (KPS); and grain yield (GY (kg/ha)) was subjected to the analysis of variance using Genstat 18th edition. As the study took place over two sites, a combined ANOVA table revealed significant differences (p0.001) among genotypes, and all interactions such as genotype by water regime (GWR); genotype by seasons (GS) for all studied traits. Notably, the extent and severity of drought differed between geographical regions and between seasons. This necessitated the adoption of the additive main effect and multiplicative interaction analysis (AMMI) for the identification of stable genotypes under two different water regimes over two sites. Regarding grain yield, superior and/or stable genotypes included G5 (4334 kg/ha under optimum, and 2871kg/ha under drought), and G22 (4418 kg/ha under optimum, and 2624kg/ha under drought) at the UFH site. G21 (3194 kg/ha under optimum, and 2938 kg/ha under drought), G33 (2552kg/ha under optimum, and 3810 kg/ha under drought), and G35 (2688 kg/ha under optimum, and 3309 kg/ha under drought) at the ZAN site. Stable genotypes across sites included G21 and G33. There were generally weak correlations between agro-physiological traits and grain yield. From the experiment, grain quality traits such as fixed protein (PF); wet gluten (WG); hectolitre mass (HLM); and thousand kernel weight (TKW) were also examined. A combined ANOVA revealed significant differences (p0.001) among the interaction of genotypes by environments (GE) for all traits except PF. This implies that the performance of wheat genotypes across sites was also different, and therefore, necessitated separate analysis of variance for each site. Significant differences (p0.001) among genotypes (G), water regimes (WR), and the interaction of genotypes by water regime (GWR) were observed for all studied quality traits except PF in both sites. GWR showed no significant differences for TKW in the ZAN site. The stability in the performance of genotypes across water regimes was further determined. G38 was stable for wet gluten; G31 and G26 were stable for PF; G36 was stable for HLM; and G11, G15, and G29 were stable for TKW at the UFH site. G6 was stable for both WG and PF; G13 and G15 were stable for HLM; and G35, G21, and G40 were stable for TKW at the ZAN site. These results suggest that the quality of wheat grains was affected under drought stress conditions except PF. Average grain yield data under both stressed (Ys) and optimum (Yp) conditions was used to compute a number of different drought tolerance indices. These include mean productivity (MP); geometric mean productivity (GMP); harmonic mean (HM); Tolerance index (TOL), stress susceptible index (SSI), sensitive drought index (SDI), and stress tolerance index (STI). The aim was to identify appropriate drought tolerance indices that can be used as selection tools under drought stress. MP, GMP, and HM were the more appropriate indices as they had a strong and positive correlation with grain yield under both drought and optimum conditions. However, genotypes G5, G22, G8, and G21 were more tolerant and stable as they showed high mean values. Based on the results, G19, G16, G2, and G20 were more sensitive to drought as they showed low values of MP, GMP, and HM. Overall, genotype: G5, G21, G22, and G33 are recommended for production under drought and optimum conditions, as they showed stable performance across water regimes. - Description: Wheat is generally one of the dominant crops globally, being mainly used for human food and livestock feed. Due to climate change, drought makes it challenging to produce enough wheat mostly under dryland production regions in South Africa. Drought stress has severely reduced wheat yield by up to 70 percent, and adversely compromised wheat grain quality. The adoption of drought-tolerant cultivars offers a sustainable and low-cost solution for increasing wheat yields and minimise importing the crop to meet national requirements. The main objective of this study was to investigate the response of different wheat genotypes to drought and optimum conditions in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Forty diverse wheat genotypes were evaluated in this study. The specific objectives were: (i) to evaluate the response of wheat genotypes under optimum and drought-stressed field conditions; (ii) to determine the effect of terminal drought stress on wheat grain quality composition; and (iii) to identify appropriate drought tolerance indices that can be used as selection tools under field conditions. This study was conducted in the field using a 5x8 alpha lattice design, replicated twice under two water regimes (drought and optimum) over two consecutive winter seasons of 2020 and 2021 at two different sites namely University of Fort Hare Research Farm in Alice, and Zanyokwe irrigation scheme in Keiskamahoek. Drought stress was imposed from 50% flowering up to physiological maturity. Data on agro-physiological traits such as duration to heading (DTH); flowering (DTF); maturity (DTM); plant height (HT); spike length (SL); number of spikelets per spike (SPS); kernels per spike (KPS); and grain yield (GY (kg/ha)) was subjected to the analysis of variance using Genstat 18th edition. As the study took place over two sites, a combined ANOVA table revealed significant differences (p0.001) among genotypes, and all interactions such as genotype by water regime (GWR); genotype by seasons (GS) for all studied traits. Notably, the extent and severity of drought differed between geographical regions and between seasons.
