- Description: The concept of work engagement has become increasingly important in modern day organisations due to the impact of engagement on productivity, absenteeism, retention and general employee well-being. Organisations with the ability to nurture and improve the engagement levels of their employees are able to prosper as sustainable, competitive and adaptive organisations. The aim of this research is to determine which factors influence engagement of employees in South Africa and specifically in the aquaculture arena, which predominantly employs unskilled and semi-skilled people. A quantitative research design was applied to determine the work engagement levels of employees in an aquaculture organisation in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Participants were requested to complete the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale as well as a biographic questionnaire. Engagement levels of different biographic groups were compared. Results indicate that there is a statistical and practical significant difference in the engagement levels of employees from different biographic groups. Older employees and employees with tertiary qualifications reported higher engagement levels. Female employees also indicated significantly higher engagement levels than their male colleagues. There are significant differences in the engagement levels of employees from different work sections and different lengths of service. Many of the differences in engagement levels can be explained in terms of the Job Demands-Resources Model. The difference in engagement level between respondents from different work sections may be due to differences in leadership style of the section supervisors. The scope of this study is not sufficient to explain the reasons for differences and more research in this area is recommended. The diverse employment landscape in South Africa requires more than a “one-size fits all” approach to managing employee engagement. This is, however, not an exclusive formula for success as the relationship between the franchisee and franchisor is dynamic with the economic landscape always changing. Entrepreneurs often display traits that do not always coincide with the franchisor’s framework. By developing a framework, the study aimed to supply possible solutions for improved alignment between the franchisee and the franchisor resulting in a prosperous relationship enabling economic growth and impacting positively on the unemployment crises in South Africa. A literature study was followed up with a case study research approach. The context was singular, namely a branded fitment centre franchise within the tyre fitment industry in South Africa. A schedule of interview protocols was undertaken with embedded multiple units of analyses based on feedback from franchise industry expert, franchisor representatives and franchisees who own various fitment centres. The case study research explored the factors that contributed to the successful alignment of the entrepreneurial paradigm to the franchise network requirements within a national franchise retail tyre fitment brand. Factors that ensure improved alignment between the franchisee and the franchisor requirements were explored in this research. Franchising provides comparable risks and benefits associated with other entrepreneurial ventures. However, entrepreneurs have a stronger chance of survival when aligning themselves with a franchise network. Franchising is critical for economic development. The study indicates that franchising influences the entrepreneurial paradigm. With regard to reading, amongst other things, Foundation Phase learners have been found to be “barking” at the text. That is an indication that they are struggling with achieving and grasping the main goal and purpose of reading, which is comprehension. In this dissertation, I explore the reading strategies teachers utilise in their grade 3 classrooms when teaching IsiXhosa and English. Participants for this study were grade 3 teachers from 2 different public schools in Idutywa District and grade 3 learners from 2 different public schools in Idutywa district. This qualitative study thus sought to investigate Grade 3 teachers’ strategies for developing learners’ reading comprehension skills in bilingual classrooms in two schools in the Idutywa Education District. Data was generated through semi-structured interviews. Amongst other issues, findings of the study revealed the following: participants reported valuing reading as an important skill that learners need to acquire academic success. Teachers demonstrated some understanding of how reading lessons are sequenced and paced. However, the concept happiness (subjective well-being) presents an important factor that benefits not only the employee but the organisation as well. The need to measure the happiness of pharmacists lead to the investigation of two happiness theories identified from literature namely, the affective and cognitive theory and the link between the theories. While the happiness of employees in South Africa has been explored to a limited degree, the level of happiness of South African pharmacists has not been adequately investigated. This study aims to determine the factors that positively influence the happiness of pharmacists in South Africa and subsequently establish a conceptual model to be used in future studies. Factors determined from literature were used to establish an online survey, which was distributed to pharmacists in South Africa. A total of 216 respondents participated in this study. The analysis on the data was performed and included, descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Cronbach Alpha, Pearson’s correlations and ANOVA. The results indicated that the independent factors of Professional Pride, Purpose, Optimism, Leisure and Societal Satisfaction were found to have a significant positive influence on happiness. While the factors of Influence in the workplace, Work and social relationships, Work-life balance, Work Satisfaction, Organisational Satisfaction and Self-satisfaction were found to have no influence on the happiness of pharmacists in South Africa. However, all the identified independent factors presented a positive correlation with the dependent factor of Happiness. - Description: Despite the development in computerised systems and in planning and manufacturing programmes since 1950, Pharma-X* still record their manufacturing processes manually, using a paper batch record, (Manufacturing Batch Records (MBR) or Batch Manufacturing Records (MBR)) and equipment logbooks. There can be up to five logbooks and an equipment control label for each type of equipment used at each process step, which must be completed manually before manufacturing can commence. This paper-based system is a laborious practice, as excessive time is spent completing manual entries into the MBRs and logbooks. Lean thinking, a popular manufacturing improvement philosophy, would describe any such activity as non-value adding and therefore waste (Melton, 2005). Pharma-X started implementing a manufacturing execution system (MES) in June 2018 to automate the manual entries of the manufacturing process. Once the MES is completely implemented, it will allow pharmacists the opportunity to review the manufacturing batch in real-time and to conduct investigations when an error occurs. MES will also allow the operators to complete logbooks with a single scan of equipment, as well as decrease manual entries into the MBR. Incidence of parasitic trematodes effects on the energetics and behaviour of Coryogalops sordidus (Family: Gobiidae) resident in microbialite pools, warm temperate South Africa

- Description: Coryogalops sordidus(Epaulette goby), is a cryptobenthic species of the Family Gobiidae that iscommonly foundoccupying turbulent surf zones, calm rock pools, and sand and mud flats, where they are generally carnivorous predators. The distribution of C. sordidushas been recorded for Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa. The species is also resident in the microbialite pools on the temperate south east coast of South Africa. Recent reports indicated these gobies to be covered in numerous dark lesions, possibly suggesting that the microbialite pools are a sub-optimal habitat. Preliminary analyses have indicated that the dark lesions are a result of encysted metacercaria of a digenetic trematode (fluke). There werehowever,no current recorded parasiticspecies occurring within microbialite pool nor any records of any parasitic species utilizingC. sordidus as a host in South Africa. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate parasite-host interactions and parasite presence in and around themicrobialite pool systems of Algoa Bay using C. sordidusas a study species. Coryogalops sordiduswas identified to be parasitised by digenetic trematode metacercaria of the Family Diplostomidae Poirier, 1886, localised primarily to the host musculature, fins, eyes, and integument with no settlement on any of the visceral organs. Furthermore, C. sordidus was found additionally parasitised by a green leech (Class: Hirundinea) of the Family Piscicolidae Johnston, 1865, localised exclusively to the ventral body surface, underneath the pelvic fin of the host. Further investigation into the life cycle of the trematode, suggested that the most probable final hosts wereherons,namely Ardea cinereaand Egretta garzetta garzetta, and intermediate host likely being the freshwater gastropod Assimineacf.capensis, present inthe upper microbialite pools. In both the microbialite and neighbouring rock pools trematode prevalence was found to oscillate in response to seasonal chemical and climatic conditions, whereas the secondary piscicolid leech parasite was influencedmoreby host presence than environmental conditions. Greater prevalence and intensity were measured in the microbialite pools suggesting that these systems likely contained a suit of favourable conditions that allowed for greater trematode loads to be maintained as compared to neighbouring rock pools. As parasites often have deleterious effects on their hosts, the response can manifest as an altered host behaviour or an increased energetic debt due to elevated immune response activity and the associated cost of tissue repair at sites of parasite aggregation.This study further investigatedifgobies (C. sordidus) infected with metacercarial cysts display higher metabolic ratesordifferent swimming behaviour compared to non-infected individuals. The results indicated that the metacercarial load carried by infected hosts had on average no significant impact on energetics, swimming ability, or swimming behaviour, concluding that the average metacercarial intensity present on the gobies is therefore below the threshold of an altered host response. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 2021

- Description: Coryogalops sordidus(Epaulette goby), is a cryptobenthic species of the Family Gobiidae that iscommonly foundoccupying turbulent surf zones, calm rock pools, and sand and mud flats, where they are generally carnivorous predators. The distribution of C. sordidushas been recorded for Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa. The species is also resident in the microbialite pools on the temperate south east coast of South Africa. Recent reports indicated these gobies to be covered in numerous dark lesions, possibly suggesting that the microbialite pools are a sub-optimal habitat. Preliminary analyses have indicated that the dark lesions are a result of encysted metacercaria of a digenetic trematode (fluke). There werehowever,no current recorded parasiticspecies occurring within microbialite pool nor any records of any parasitic species utilizingC. sordidus as a host in South Africa. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate parasite-host interactions and parasite presence in and around themicrobialite pool systems of Algoa Bay using C. sordidusas a study species. Coryogalops sordiduswas identified to be parasitised by digenetic trematode metacercaria of the Family Diplostomidae Poirier, 1886, localised primarily to the host musculature, fins, eyes, and integument with no settlement on any of the visceral organs. Furthermore, C. sordidus was found additionally parasitised by a green leech (Class: Hirundinea) of the Family Piscicolidae Johnston, 1865, localised exclusively to the ventral body surface, underneath the pelvic fin of the host. Further investigation into the life cycle of the trematode, suggested that the most probable final hosts wereherons,namely Ardea cinereaand Egretta garzetta garzetta, and intermediate host likely being the freshwater gastropod Assimineacf.capensis, present inthe upper microbialite pools. In both the microbialite and neighbouring rock pools trematode prevalence was found to oscillate in response to seasonal chemical and climatic conditions, whereas the secondary piscicolid leech parasite was influencedmoreby host presence than environmental conditions. Greater prevalence and intensity were measured in the microbialite pools suggesting that these systems likely contained a suit of favourable conditions that allowed for greater trematode loads to be maintained as compared to neighbouring rock pools. As parasites often have deleterious effects on their hosts, the response can manifest as an altered host behaviour or an increased energetic debt due to elevated immune response activity and the associated cost of tissue repair at sites of parasite aggregation.This study further investigatedifgobies (C. sordidus) infected with metacercarial cysts display higher metabolic ratesordifferent swimming behaviour compared to non-infected individuals. The results indicated that the metacercarial load carried by infected hosts had on average no significant impact on energetics, swimming ability, or swimming behaviour, concluding that the average metacercarial intensity present on the gobies is therefore below the threshold of an altered host response. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 2021

- Description: This study investigated the effects of the position of extraction and a corrosive environment on the fatigue properties of Ti-6Al-4V Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) specimens. Additive manufacturing (AM) processes allow for a reduction in manufacturing time, whilst constructing complex geometries. AM induces a complex thermal history which influences the microstructure in the material (1). The microstructure affects the fatigue properties where a finer microstructure is more favourable for increasing the fatigue life (2). Fatigue failure is one of the main modes of failure during a material’s service life (3). Thus, it is imperative to investigate the material’s fatigue behaviour. Major parameters of the LMD process were investigated, allowing bulk LMD coupons to be manufactured, from which fatigue specimens were extracted at three different heights. Static properties were attained through tensile testing and a Vickers Micro-Hardness evaluation. These properties allowed for calculating benchmark stresses that were utilised for fatigue testing. The biocompatibility of Ti-6Al-4V makes it desirable for medical implants – the core influence of this study. An implant is constantly subjected to a corrosive saline environment, introducing a corrosive mechanism of failure, known to decrease the life of a material. A rotary bending fatigue platform was utilised as it allowed for modifications to introduce a corrosive saline environment through means of a saline dosing system. Literature reports a higher possibility of corrosion fatigue occurring under rotary bending fatigue conditions for Ti alloy specimens (4,5). The fatigue data indicated no significant effect on the fatigue properties was evident when comparing the position of extraction, attributed to the interrupted build strategy utilised for manufacturing the bulk coupons. The specimens displayed a shift in fatigue life when subjected to a corrosive saline environment. - Description: This study examines the influence of talent management strategies on employee retention with employee engagement as a mediating variable. This study was conducted at Aspen Pharmacare Port Elizabeth site, South Africa. The population in this study is approximately 1500 employees from Aspen Pharmacare Port Elizabeth. The sampling method uses census techniques so that the number of samples used is 49 employees. The research data was collected using an online questionnaire which is then analysed using a path analysis technique using SPSS software to examine the relationships among the variables, which are: employee value proposition, work motivation and employee performance. The results show that there is a positive relationship between all talent management strategies and retention. Leadership has a largely significant correlation with retention, however, it is indicated that engagement is a mediating variable. - Description: The purpose of this study is to investigate how Local Economic Development (LED) in Mnquma, with a particular focus on Butterworth, has impacted the alleviation of inequality, underdevelopment and poverty among the poorest of the poor. The aim of the literature review is to analyse the existing knowledge about LED, its impact in the alleviation of inequality, underdevelopment and poverty among the poorest of the poor and the tangible concrete pointer that shows that all key sector role-players are participating in LED. This study is qualitative in nature and employs a case study as the research design. The convenience sampling technique was used to select seven municipal workers and eight members of the community, giving a total of 14 participants. An open-ended interview schedule was used for the face-to-face in-depth interviews in order to collect data from the participants. Collected data was thematically analysed and raw data put set into meaningful segments, codes and categories. Themes were drawn from the responses of the participants and analysed. Some of the findings were that Butterworth municipality was seen as having both urban and rural features. On the other hand, it was found that the municipality did nothing to provide basic services to the people, the towns were dirty and streets lights were not working, there was insufficient representation based on the number of councillors elected under the Mnquma Local Municipality, municipality councillors lack skills, do not give feedback to the communities and need to be capacitated. The study also found that: ward committee members are less involved in the governance of the local municipality; there is a prevalence of high level unemployment and poverty in the municipality. However, there are various expanded Public Works Programmes currently going on in the municipality. Whilst, most studies on mainstream media coverage of protest movements have shown that protests around the world are typically portrayed in a negative and delegitimising manner, scholars have declared social media to be very useful in helping protesters counter the negative mainstream media coverage towards them by telling their side of the story to the public, and in a manner in which they want to be perceived. Considering these nuances, this study focuses on The Herald, a Port Elizabeth based newspaper, and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University 2015 #FeesMustFall student protest movement. Through a content analysis, this study aims to, firstly, to explore the mainstream media’s representation and students’ social media self-representations of the #FeesMustFall student protest movement, and secondly; to identify the purpose(s) for which students utilised social media during the #FeesMustFall student protest movement. The results showed that The Herald coverage was predominantly positive and pro-student, and that students represented themselves and the movement in a positive and legitimising manner on their #FeesMustFall social media platforms. Nurse educators’ understanding of Africanising undergraduate education at a nursing education institution

- Description: In the light of transformation and the need for a relatively recently liberated country to enhance higher education, one of the foremost demands of South Africans in education was that of Africanising higher education. Africanising is associated with the term ‘transformation’. The latter is a process that requires the revision of the existing education system towards that of an African-contextualised education system in Africa. Concurrently the nursing profession has an increased need for transcultural nursing in education to ensure that undergraduates deliver culturally aligned and African contextualised nursing care. At present, there is no clear description of how Africanising nursing education can be carried out by nurse educators. Hence some educators argue that the change may not be a smooth process as there is no blueprint that provides guidance for how the process should be conducted. This study intended to assist in describing the meaning of Africanising nursing education as it is understood by nurse educators in a Nursing Education Institution (NEI). Therefore, this study explored and described nurse educators’ understanding of Africanising undergraduate nursing education at a NEI in the Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape, South Africa in order to construct recommendations for NEI managers and nurse educators on how the process of Africanising undergraduate nursing education at NEIs can be facilitated. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive approach. The postcolonial theory was used to underpin this study. Purposive sampling was utilised to select nurse educators for participation in the study. Each of the twelve participants were asked to draw a naïve sketch regarding their understanding of fricanisation of the undergraduate nursing education followed by an individual semi-structured interview. Data collection was conducted online, using recorded Zoom sessions. Content analysis was used to aanalyse the data and the findings were used to construct recommendations for NEI managers and nurse educators on how the process of Africanising undergraduate nursing education at NEIs can be enhanced. Optimising the uptake of [𝐈𝐫𝐂𝐥𝟔]𝟐− by a diammonium resin: HCl effect and resin performance

- Description: The separation of [IrCl6]2- from [RhCl5(H2O)]2- by silica microparticles functionalized with 1,10-diamindecane (C10) and quaternized with 4-nitrobenzylchloride (NO2Benz) in various hydrochloric acid mediums was investigated by continuous column studies. The sorbent materials were synthesized using three different routes: Synthesis route 1 (NaI catalyzed synthesis of diammonium functionalized silica microparticles), Synthesis Route 2 (via silylazation of silica followed by functionalization) and Synthesis Route 3 (silane-based sorbent material). The functionalized sorbent materials were characterized by NMR, Microanalysis, SEM-EDS, FT-IR, TGA and BET surface area. The separation efficiency of the quaternary diammonium cations was investigated under dynamic flow adsorption conditions. Preliminary ICP-OES runs were done, at 6 M HCl, to assess which synthesis route gave the best performing sorbent material. [IrCl6]2- selectivity of the sorbent materials was achieved by washing with an HCl solution to remove unadsorbed metal species, then stripping off the [RhCl5(H2O)]2- with 0.05 M of sodium chlorate and the iridium species was eluted with a 20% HCl solution. From the preliminary ICP-OES, loading capacities were calculated, and it was observed that the three sorbent materials from synthesis route 2 (13.89 mg/g for (4) SSC10NO2Benz-A, 1.44 mg/g for (5) SSC10NO2Benz-HoA, and 1.0859 mg/g for (6) SSC10NO2Benz-DoA) showed the highest uptake of [IrCl6]2- and route 1 (1.89 mg/g for (1) SSC10NO2Benz-A, 1.25 mg/g for (2) SSC10NO2Benz-HoA and 0.99 mg/g for (3) SSC10NO2Benz-DoA ) and Route 3 (0.55 mg/g for (7) SC10-AI and 0.755 mg/g for (8) SC10-ACl) materials did not perform efficiently enough, thus were not used further for the HCl study. Within synthesis route 2, three sorbent materials were evaluated, which had varying quantities of the cation: SSC10NO2Benz-A (having a quantity previously used in our research and denoted A), SSC10NO2Benz-HoA (having a quantity Half of A) and SSC10NO2Benz-DoA (having a quantity double of A). SSC10NO2Benz-A showed the highest loading capacity than SSC10NO2Benz-HoA and SSC10NO2Benz-DoA; HCl studies were carried out using SSC10NO2Benz-A. HCl solution having different concentrations (5, 5.5 , 6 , 6.6 and 6.8 M) were used to prepare the metal solutions. This was done to assess which HCl concentration gave the best metal solution containing high amounts of [IrCl6]2- and [RhCl5(H2O)]2-, which would result in a more efficient separation. An auto titrator was used to standardize the HCl concentrations, and the metal ion chloride species solutions were determined by UV-Vis, and their concentrations were confirmed with ICP-OES. Column sorption of iridium and rhodium on SSC10NO2Benz-A using these HCl solutions was carried out, and loading capacities of [IrCl6]2- were obtained. The loading capacities of the 5 M, 5.5 M, 6 M, 6,6 M and 6.8 M HCl solutions for [IrCl6]2- were 2.64, 4.01, 13.89, 18.15 and 7.23 mg/g, respectively. The optimum separation conditions were thus determined by investigating effective parameters such as the method of synthesis, silica to cation ratio, HCl concentration and flow rate. Overall experience of expatriate TEFL teachers in China using positive and negative affectivity

- Description: Mirroring the growth in the global population, there is a growth in unemployment and due to the current global COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment statistics are set to soar. In many countries, the lack of quality working opportunities results in qualified, educated and trained people (often the youth) opting to emigrate in order to pursue better quality jobs as well as to increase their standard of living and reduce their socio-economic costs, known as the “brain drain” phenomenon. While there are many work opportunities which youth are pursuing, teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in a foreign country has become a very popular option, specifically in China. According to the Experience Model by Pine and Gilmore, the overall experience an individual has will be impacted by different factors, with the experience of being a foreign TEFL teacher in China being no exception. Furthermore, following the principles of human affectivity, the individual’s personal disposition or affectivity towards the activity will also influence their experience. It is therefore of interest to distinguish which factors influence the overall experience of teaching TEFL in China. From the comprehensive literature reviews, a proposed theoretical framework was constructed to identify the influence which social influences, work environment, location, cultural aspects, monetary benefits and non-monetary benefits (independent variables) have on the overall experience of teaching TEFL in China (independent variable). Six sets of hypotheses were formulated relating to the identified variables and through empirical research, it was decided whether the hypotheses of this study were accepted or rejected. In order to establish the influence of the independent variables on the dependent variable of this study, empirical research was conducted. The study employed a positivistic paradigm and a quantitative approach. The sample population of this study was TEFL teachers, who were teaching in China, during the time of the study. Due to the fact that no true sample frame exists for TEFL teachers who are working in China, non-probability sampling, more specifically, convenience sampling, was used to select respondents. Respondents were reached through online social media platforms. For the purpose of this study, online surveys were utilised as a data collection method and the specific data collection instrument was a web-based self-administered questionnaire. Section A of the questionnaire was used to collect the demographic data of the respondents, while Section B – Section G related to the variables of the study. A total of 379 usable questionnaires were received from a possible 479 respondents, indicating an 80.2% response rate. The study made use of descriptive (measure of central tendency as well as standard deviation and skewness of the data set) as well as inferential (Spearman’s correlation coefficient, ANOVA’s, Tukey Test, Cohen’s d, Kruskal-Wallis test and ordinal regression) statistics to interpret the raw data quantitatively, which was graphically illustrated. The empirical investigation conducted in this study between the variables, and sub-variables, revealed significant relationships between social influences (the presence of an expat community, the potential influence of a language barrier, acceptance by locals, access to healthcare), work environment (the work conditions of the TEFL teacher, specific working hours), location (the standard of accommodation provide, the specific city in which the TEFL teacher works and resides), cultural aspects (the lifestyle TEFL teachers are known to have, increased tourism opportunity), monetary benefits, and nonmonetary benefits and the overall experience of teaching TEFL in China. Within this study, the independent variables social influences, work environment, location cultural aspects and monetary benefits presented the highest correlation with the dependent variable, the overall experience of teaching TEFL in China. Additionally, of the above-mentioned variables, it was established that respondents with a higher monetary benefits factor score, were 3.64 times more likely to have a more positive overall experience, while respondents with a higher social influences factor score, were 2.80 times more likely to have a more positive overall experience. Based on the empirical findings, and corresponding literature findings, of this study, recommendations were provided to both aspiring TEFL teachers as well as to the institution in China who employ expatriate TEFL teachers regarding the variables of this study. The limitations of this study comprised of a lack of time; minimal budget; slow questionnaire response or access to respondents, and; availability of reliable resources to support the study. Finally, based on the findings of this study, the researcher made recommendation for future areas of study. The research conducted indicates the importance of the influence of the variables identified in this study on the overall experience of teaching TEFL in China. Parents’ perceptions of the impact of social media use on adolescent identity formation and safety

- Description: Traditionally, parents were able to protect, monitor, guide, and support adolescents within the microsystem. However, in a society where the technosystemic digital world has entered microsystemic parent-adolescent interactions and the developmental process of adolescents’ identity formation, it is crucial to understand how parents experience and perceive the role that social media plays in their adolescent children’s identity development and safety. The primary aim of this study is to understand parents’ perceptions and experiences of social media use in adolescent identity formation and safety. The researcher utilised a qualitative research approach with an exploratory descriptive design. A non-probability purposive sample was employed, and telephonic semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants. All of the participants were parents of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18. Interviews were conducted until data saturation was reached. The participants’ responses were analysed using thematic analysis. Four categories arose from the data analysis and demonstrate that social media was perceived to have both a helpful and unhelpful impact on adolescents’ identity formation and safety. The first category refers to the perceived role social media plays in adolescents’ development of physical, gender, sexual, and social identity. The permanence of social media, the role parent-adolescent relationships play in adolescents’ online identity experiences, and identity commitment and exploration maturity emerged as key themes. The second category of key findings associated with social media and adolescents’ safety include social media violations, the mental health of adolescents, emotional regulation, identity formation, and reality illusion as themes that emerged from the data. The third category encompasses the resources that parents perceive to be of assistance in maintaining and enhancing safe social media use among adolescents, namely parent-adolescent relationships, remaining educated, and adjusting monitoring in a developmentally appropriate manner. The fourth category refers to a network of resources that parents apply to maintain and increase safe social media use by their adolescent children. Participation of stakeholders in the rationalisation of schools: a case of closure and merger of schools in the Amatole West Education District of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

- Description: The Department of Basic Education (DBE) in South Africa has shut down many public schools in the last few years and several other township and rural schools face imminent closure. The major reason adduced for this disturbing development is the increasing reduction of pupils because of poor performance. However, it is not clear whether all stakeholders are involved in the school rationalisation programme. Schools are custodians of children’s education and thus stakeholders such as parents, teachers, learners, community members and traditional leaders are important stakeholders in the education system and therefore, should participate fully in policy development and implementation processes. This study investigated how stakeholders in the school system such as teachers, learners, parents, and traditional leaders participated in the implementation of the school rationalisation policy. Using a qualitative approach within the interpretive research paradigm, the study investigated the case of two secondary schools that were closed and merged in the Amatole West Education District of the Eastern Cape Province. The researcher adopted this research approach because of its exploratory, descriptive, and contextual nature. A non-probability purposive sample was selected from the categories of teachers, learners and parents including traditional leaders of the communities of the two schools that were investigated. Data was collected using semi-structured face-to-face interviews and focus group discussions, while the content analysis technique was used to analyse the data. The data collected and analysed was also tested for its trustworthiness and ethical imperatives were also considered. The study revealed a lack of proper consultation of stakeholders prior to and during the implementation of school rationalisation policy. The DoE, to give an impression that stakeholders participated, in order to comply with the legislation, adopted a pseudo-participation strategy. This lack of consultation and pseudo-participation of stakeholders declared their participation as undemocratic. As a result, many challenges emerged and there were also unintended consequences that manifested themselves in the process. These findings were then translated into conclusions. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the authorities should consult with the relevant stakeholders and create platforms that will allow them to express their views about any proposed school rationalisation policy before it can be implemented. The DoE should also consider all relevant legislative imperatives before embarking to the implementation of its decision to close or merge schools. In compelling situations where school closures are necessary, the anticipated social and economic impacts and unintended impacts on learners must be planned and mitigated before the school closure policy can be implemented. Lastly, the relevant authorities should develop an alternative policy framework to address the gaps and challenges that manifested themselves during the implementation of the current school rationalisation policy framework. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the authorities should consult with the relevant stakeholders and create platforms that will allow them to express their views about any proposed school rationalisation policy before it can be implemented. The DoE should also consider all relevant legislative imperatives before embarking to the implementation of its decision to close or merge schools. In compelling situations where school closures are necessary, the anticipated social and economic impacts and unintended impacts on learners must be planned and mitigated before the school closure policy can be implemented. Lastly, the relevant authorities should develop an alternative policy framework to address the gaps and challenges that manifested themselves during the implementation of the current school rationalisation policy framework. - Description: Cyberbullying is a significant field of study within cyberpsychology and requires continued research and development in order to further literature and understanding in a South African context. An increase in cyberbullying results in an increased prevalence of the occurrence of psychological distress in the form of short-term consequences as well as long-term chronic impacts such as depression, anxiety, and decreased life satisfaction. This qualitative study aimed to explore and describe the experiences of young adults who have experienced cyberbullying and the perceived impact of this experience on their psychological well-being. Qualitative research is a flexible exploratory and descriptive approach to understanding the lived experiences of an individual and their subjective view of a specific phenomenon through an interpretivist paradigm. This study utilised purposive and snowball sampling of Nelson Mandela University students aged 18 – 25 years old to gain a total of 6 participants for data gathering through semi-structured interviews. This research process followed a retrospective perspective which focuses on the specific meaning-making and understandings which that individual places on that experience, in relation to their psychological well-being. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse the data and trustworthiness criteria and was utilised throughout to ensure the credibility of the study. It was found that cyberbullying, through multiple forms and methods, has various short-term and long-term perceived impacts in several spheres. The perceived psychological impacts occurred in the short-term and were internalised to extend to long-term impacts on psychological well-being, of which the majority were negative. There are influencing factors to the development, coping and management of perceived long-term impacts which reflect the outcomes on well-being. The findings of this study highlight the perceived impact of cyberbullying on young adults’ psychological well-being which is vital for future recommendations and intervention. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Health Sciences, 2021
