- Description: Martin Meisel has noted that Delacroix's 1841 painting A Shipwreck was recognised as uniting Gericault and Byron. for not only does the painting illustrate that moment in Don Juan when lots are drawn for the human sacrifice {2, 75) but it also invokes comparison with Gericault' s 1819 painting entitled Raft of the Medusa(Meisel1988:601).1 would like to argue in this paper that Gericault' s famous painting and Byron's shipwreck stanzas in the second canto of Don Juan have other points of comparison. Gericault used the Savigny and Correard Narrative of a Voyage to Senegal ( 1817) as the primary source of information for his treatment of the Medusa incident (Eitner 1971: 117). Byron used multiple sources when he researched material for his shipwreck stanzas but it is highly probable that the Savigny and Correard text was one of them. Thus, the cause celebre of the wreck of the Medusa is directly treated by Gericault and indirectly by Byron - two artists temperamentally and artistically attuned.

- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/427347 , vital:72432 , https://www.aes.org/e-lib/online/browse.cfm?elib=8044
- Description: A system has been created for the production of ambisonic surround sound compositions using a client-server architecture. Those calculations requiring processing power and large amounts of disc storage and disc access are relegated to the server, while the client provides an intuitive user interface and limited processing. The server plays the role of a remote surround sound processing engine, which can be utilized by clients. The system has been constructed, and the feasibility of the approach has been evaluated via experimental data.

- Description: In the political vacuum that accompanies Africa's 'strategic marginalisation' and in a situation of fifteen conflicts, our continent finds itself in a state of flux. Here lies the challenge for inter-African diplomacy and regional initiatives by state and non-state actors seeking to indigenously define, manage and contain conflict. The intention must be a purposive one: to seek to normatively structure an environment 'paddocked' to provide security for states, civic society, communities, women, children and individuals.

- Description: Adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetric (AdCSV) studies of gold(III) on a glassy carbon electrode and in the presence of yeast mannan are reported. These studies give evidence of the formation of a complex between gold(III) and mannan in acid media as judged by the enhancement in the AdCSV currents and shift in the reduction peak of gold(III) in the presence of mannan. The AdCSV currents were linearly dependent on gold(III) concentrations ranging from 7.0 × 10−7 to 3.0 × 10−4 mol dm−3. A detection limit of 6.0 × 10−8 mol dm−3 was obtained. Interferences of copper(II) were observed in the presence of mannan, but there was no significant interference of silver(I).

- Description: A new stem-group chondrichthyan fish, PlesioselacJllIs macracanthlls gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Late Devonian Witpoort Formation, representing an estuarine lagoon site, near Grahamstown, South Africa. Based on a single, fairly complete specimen, it is distinctive in its a single dorsal fin braced by a large, stout spine with numerous ribs and posterior denticles, apparently no second dorsal or anal fin, an amphistylic jaw suspension, and a distinctive triangular palatoquadrate. It is suggested that the species may represent a high-latitude, Late Devonian relict taxon.

- Description: Studies on the catalytic reduction of nitrite on carbon electrodes modified with Co(II) tetra-2,3-pyridinoporphyrazine (CoTppa, 1), N,N′,N′′,N′′′-tetramethyltetra-2,3-pyridinoporphyrazine ([CoTm-2,3-tppa]4+, 2) and Co(II) N,N′,N′′,N′′′-tetramethyltetra-3,4-pyridinoporphyrazine ([CoTm-3,4-tppa]4+, 3) are reported. There is a close correspondence between the proximity of the methyl groups to the porphyrazine ring and the catalytic activity of the porphyrazine complexes. Bulk electrolysis gave ammonia and hydroxylamine as some of the products. The catalytic activity of the cationic complex, 3, towards the detection of low concentrations of nitrite (less than 10−9 M) in water containing sodium sulfate, was compared with the activities of the anionic cobalt(II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine ([CoTSPc]4−, 4) and the mixed [CoIITm-3,4-tppa]4+·[CoTSPc]4− (5) complexes. Complex 5 showed the best catalytic activity of the three in that large currents were obtained for very low concentrations of nitrite.

- Description: This paper presents our approach towards creating a Web-based Spatiotemporal Geographic Information System, in particular, the creation of the spatial data set and the component interaction. It explores the possibility of rendering Virtual GIS Worlds in near real time across the WWW using a standard Web browser as the user interface. A" proof of concept" Web-based VGIS application was developed to investigate methods for the efficient transfer of high-bandwidth multimedia GIS content over the WWW, as well as providing a suitable development environment for research into Web-based Temporal GIS. This paper describes how VRML and Java were used to provide the visualisation of virtual worlds, interaction with individual objects inside the virtual world, and the query tools for adding, deleting, selecting or manipulating these objects or their associated attribute data.

- Description: Differential scanning calorimetry was used to examine the thermal behaviour of mixtures of the drug prochlorperazine with standard excipients, to assess potential interactions, and of mixtures with cyclodextrins, to investigate inclusion complexation which could increase the photostability of the drug. For most of the excipients (magnesium stearate, stearic acid, Explotab®, Ac-Di-Sol®, Encompress® and Ludipress®, lactose and Starch 1500) disappearance or broadening of the melting endotherm of the drug indicated interactions. Lubritab® was the only 'inert' excipient tested. Mixtures of prochlorperazine and the cyclodextrins gave incomplete inclusion complexation as shown by only partial disappearance of the melting endotherm of the drug.

- Description: This article takes up the challenge of comparative research in Africa by analysing and comparing the oral art of West African griots and Southern African iimbongi or oral poets. Similarities and differences between these performers and their respective societies are highlighted through the use of an ethnographic methodology. A distinction is drawn between the more traditional performers such as Thiam Anchou and D.L.P. Yali-Manisi, and the more modern performers such as M’Bana Diop, Bongani Sitole and Zolani Mkiva. The rich use of genealogy and history in the more traditional performances is highlighted. In comparing the work of the more contemporary, urban poets such as M’bana Diop of Senegal and Zolani Mkiva from Southern Africa, similarities are found in their performances on post-independence leaders such as Senghor and Mandela. Political pressures which have been brought to bear on the performer are also discussed. This article explores the continuity between the past and the present in relation to aspects such as the following: how performers gain recognition, their continued survival, their relationship with politics and religion, the orality- literacy debate, and the stylistic techniques used by these performers. Wherever possible, examples of performers and their work are provided.

- Description: Spectroscopic changes observed on addition of nitrite to solutions of cobalt(II) tetra-sulfophthalocyanine ([Co(II)TSPc]4-) in the presence of N− 3 or ClO− 4 are reported. There is spectroscopic evidence for the oxidation of [Co(II)TSPc]4- to a [Co(III)TSPc]3- species in the presence of nitrite ions. Equilibrium and kinetic studies for the interaction between [Co(II)TSPc]4- and NO− 2 are reported. The rate was found to be first order in both [Co(II)TSPc]4- and NO− 2. The rate constant for the forward reaction, k f=1.6 × 10−4 dm3mol−1s−1 was determined at 20°C for the interaction between nitrite ions and [Co(II)TSPc]4- in the presence of NO3 − or ClO4 − ions.

- Description: Although the debate about contractual mistake and its theoretical foundations has evolved to the point where disagreement and contradiction has in recent times been replaced by a far higher degree of certainty and clarity (Van der Merwe and Van Huyssteen "Reasonable reliance on consensus, iustus error and the creation of contractual obligations" 1994 SALJ 679 686; Hutchison "Contract formation" in Zimmermann and Visser (eds) Southern Cross: Civil law and common law in South Africa (1996) 193), judgments dealing with the question of mistake will no doubt continue to provide interesting insights into this area of the law. Prins v ABSA Bank Ltd serves as a case in point.

- Description: Fishes of the genus Labeo are widely distributed throughout Africa and consist of at least 80 species which comprise 16.4% of the African cyprinid ichthyofauna (Reid 1985). Most labeo species are also commercially important throughout the African continent, having contributed significantly to various fisheries. Their roe (sensu caviar) is often harvested as an additional bycatch (Skelton et al. 1991). Despite their obvious importance, the few studies that have investigated aspects of their life history have been conducted on the larger commercial species (Lowe 1952, Mulder 1973, Balon et al. 1974, Potgieter 1974, Baird 1976, Tomasson et al. 1984, van Zyl et al. 1995).

- Description: The Messum complex of NW Namibia, a part of the Paraná–Etendeka volcanic province, consists of a dominantly felsic central core, surrounded by older gabbros. The igneous rocks of the core can be divided, in order of decreasing age, into (1) a sub-alkaline suite, (2) an outer quartz syenite suite, and (3) an inner silica-undersaturated suite dominated by nepheline syenite. Compositional differences within the quartz syenite suite can be explained by fractional crystallization, but Sr- and O-isotope data indicate that these rocks contain a significant crustal component.

- Description: We address the problem of virtual-videoconferencing. The proposed solution is effected in terms of a generic framework based on an in-house Virtual Reality system. The framework is composed of a number of distinct components: model acquisition, head tracking, expression analysis, network transmission and avatar reconstruction. The framework promises to provide a unique, cheap, and fast system for avatar construction, transmission and animation. This approach affords a conversion from the traditional video stream approach to the management of an avatar remotely and consequently makes minimal demands on network resources.

The market for commercial farm land in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa as a means of redistribution:

- Description: The election promise of the majority party in the new South African government was to redistribute 30% of the agricultural land in the hands of Whites within a period of 5 years. Transfers of land in the Eastern Cape Province are examined as a case study. While 60% of the total number of Eastern Cape farms changed hands over 5 years, these constituted only 19% of the surface area. A large proportion of rural transfers were small (less than 5 hectares) peri-urban properties which cannot all be considered as viable farming units. At average prices about R1 to R2 billion would be required to establish new farmers on land with the necessary livestock, machinery and equipment. Resource poor new entrants would need a major state contribution to make initial entry and subsequent survival feasible. To achieve their goal through market transfers the government would need to either substantially lengthen its time horizon or lower its target.

- Description: The Enlightenment expectation was that political identity based on ethnic nationalist sentiments would gradually give way to more ‘rational’ forms of association. That expectation has, in the late twentieth century, proved somewhat premature. The explosion of ethnic nationalist conflicts onto the international stage in the post-Cold War era has brought with it a renewed intellectual interest in the politics of nationalism and ethnicity. In response to the need for new avenues of inquiry amidst a vast and growing literature, Anthony Smith’s work on national identity appeals for a research agenda which treats nations and nationalism as cultural phenomena as well as forms of politics.

- Description: Immersive virtual reality (VR) places the user inside of the computing envi-ronment, blurring the distinction between the environment itself and the user interface to access that environment non-obvious. This lack of distinction between environment and interface makes it difficult to place menus and other interface elements where the user is both able to access them easily and where they do not obscure large parts of the users field of view. We propose a system called the 'Virtual Remote Control' (VRC). The VRC con-sists of a physical device (a small touchpad tracked using a Polhemus In-sideTrak magnetic tracker) which the user is able to hold and for which there is a representation in the virtual environment. The VRC is represented in the environment by a virtual menu. The user is able to make selections from the virtual menu by moving their finger around the touch pad part of the VRC and 'tapping' on the required action. Additionally, the user is able to select an object for the action to be applied on, by 'pointing' the representa-tion of the VRC at the object-as one would point a remote control at a Hi-fi of TV set.
