- Description: Binding of aluminium to acetylcholine has important biological implications particularly in Alzheimer's disease. An electrochemical technique, adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry, has been employed in this study to investigate the in-situ formation of a complex between aluminium and acetylcholine. The stability of the resulting complex was compared with that of the in-situ complexes formed between acetylcholine and sodium or calcium. From the shifts in the reduction potential of the metals on addition of acetylcholine it is concluded that a strong complex is formed between acetylcholine and aluminium. Much weaker complexes are formed between calcium or sodium and acetylcholine. These results have important implications in the aetiology of Alzheimer's disease-in which brain aluminium concentrations are known to be high and brain cholinergic function is lower than normal.

- Description: The intertidal population structure of the large edible gastropod Turbo sarmaticus was examined at four sites along the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. One site was free from exploitation, two were subjected to low levels of exploitationand one was heavily exploited. Within the intertidal zone at all sites there was a size-related distribution, with smalleranimals being found towards the upper mid-shore and larger animals occurring in a downshore direction. The mean shore densities (1.2–animals/m2) and biomass (4.4–9.4 g/m2) of T. sarmaticus at the sites where there was no, or minimal, exploitation of animals were not significantly different (P0.001). However, the largest animals (up to 110mmshell length) were found at the unexploited site, an offshore island. The lowest density (0.2 animals/m2) and biomass (0.4 g/m2) of T. sarmaticus was recorded at the site where the exploitation of this gastropod was intense. In addition, no animals of a legally exploitable size (>70 mm shell length) were found. It is suggested that intense over-exploitation is threatening the population at this site.

- Description: In this research customer service excellence in First National Bank in the Port Elizabeth metropole was investigated. From the industry and competitor analysis it can be concluded that banking is a highly competitive industry that is undergoing constant change because of fierce competition. The literature survey was aimed at placing the concept of service quality, excellence and customer loyalty which lead to customer retention into perspective. The concept of total quality management outlining the specific requirements of how the concept can be utilised and how a service quality programme can be implemented was discussed. The purpose of the empirical study was to test customers’ perceptions of service provided by First National Bank and to contribute with useful information to the bank studied. From these findings improvements and recommendations were suggested as a guideline for any bank to follow to improve customer service levels. The empirical study results were satisfactory and informative. The meaningful positive responses that were identified can be utilised as competitive marketing strategies by FNB. The meaningful negative concerns the bank should consider improving upon and attention should be given to the language and SBU differences outlined.

It is almost impossible to have complete agreement, because the decision-makers are from different contextual backgrounds. Those who make the decisions are more concerned about "how to manage" and those who act on the decisions put more emphasis on economic self-interest. Although the interviewees' perceptions of sustainable fisheries was imperfect, there was broad support for its aims and principles. The study also revealed that the achievement of sustainable sea fisheries development in Wamibia will require broader educational and public awareness programmes to enhance participation in decision-making debates. Formal and informal marine environmental education, from the perspective of "Responsible Fishing" has been emphasised.
