Self-determined development practices for a marginalised San community of Tsumkwe East in Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia

- Description: This study was an exploration of self-determined development practices as a panacea for poverty reduction in the San communities. The main aim of this study was to propose possible strategies for eliminating the marginalisation of San in order to reduce poverty. This study was guided by an Indigenous research paradigm. This study used an Indigenous research methodology because it ensures that research on Indigenous issues is carried out in a more respectful, ethical, correct, sympathetic, useful and beneficial fashion seen from the point of Indigenous people. Nine out of thirty-six villages in Tsumkwe East participated in this study. Data collection was done through key informant interviews and conversational methods namely talking circles and storying. The findings of this study reveal that the marginalisation of the Ju/’hoansi San of Nyae Nyae and other San communities is closely related to their loss of ancestral land during the colonial and post-colonial era. Although the Ju/’hoansi San have fought to maintain their ancestral lands, hunting which is their main livelihood has been restricted by government regulation. The restriction on their hunting and gathering culture has been the major contribution to their marginalisation as they can no longer fend for themselves as their forefathers used to do. Despite a multitude of factors militating against the self-determination of San communities, the Ju/’hoansi San have managed to express their voice through a remnant of their hunting and gathering culture. This study also reveals that there are two important actors in Nyae Nyae namely the government of the Republic of Namibia and the Nyae Nyae Conservancy. Nyae Nyae Conservancy is a community based natural resource management organisation which has taken a participatory developmental approach to the development of Tsumkwe East. The government has taken more of a welfare approach. Although the mainstream has labelled San people lazy, uneducated, backward and uncivilised, the success of the Nyae Nyae Conservancy which is managed by the Ju/’hoansi San is a testimony to the contrary. This study reveals that the government has failed to deliver on its policy of meeting all the welfare needs of the Ju/’hoansi San but the conservancy has risen to be a relevant organisation meeting the needs of the community whilst respecting their culture and identity as a hunting and gathering community. This study concludes that self-determined development practices maybe a panacea for the development of San communities. This can be made possible by supporting the San’s hunting and gathering livelihoods, respecting their culture, securing their land and resource rights, through long-term and consistent capacity building and supporting a culturally relevant education system.

The symbolic consumption and identity construction through luxury branded clothing among Rhodes University students

- Description: The purpose of this study is to explore how Rhodes University (RU) students construct identity through the symbolic consumption of luxury branded clothing and the role played by reference groups in the consumption behaviour. The study employed the Social Identity Theory (SIT) as a theoretical framework which explains the underpinnings of the cognitions and behaviour with the use of group processes (Trepte, 2006). The central principle of SIT lies in individuals classifying themselves and others into in-group (reference groups) and out-group social categories respectively. There has been a gap in the literature pertaining to a full understanding of the identity construction process through symbolic consumption of luxury brands in South Africa (Reed, 2002). The significance of the study is to provide a foundation for an enhanced theory of consumer behaviour in this context. This study employed a qualitative research approach. A non-probability convenience sampling technique was used, and a total of 12 undergraduate and postgraduate students were interviewed. The chosen data collection method was semi-structured in-depth interviews and data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that participants consume luxury branded clothing for both functional and symbolic purposes. Various factors emerged that influence the choice of the symbolic consumption behaviour such as income, buying frequency, spending patterns, perceptions and habits around retail shopping and the shopping experience. In addition, results indicated that reference groups (celebrities, family and peers) play a significant role in the symbolic consumption and construction of identity among the participants. In addition, the results also indicated that the RU participants engaged in a ‘save to spend’ technique whereby they save their pocket money so that they spend it on their favourite luxury branded clothing when they leave for the holidays. There was a common reference group that emerged from the study, namely the peer in-group. The influence of reference groups on youth consumers in South Africa may assist with marketing strategies that can be employed when targeting the Generation Y. Additionally, results indicate that luxury branded clothing have an impact on identity construction within the South African context. The respondents tie their identity to their luxury branded clothing as an indication of ‘who they are’ and as an extension of the ‘self’.

Gender, education, health, and economic vulnerability contribute to the success of disaster management. Aim - This study aimed to investigate the microbial water quality of treated water in the Harare area. The study also researched the microbial water quality monitoring practices in Zimbabwe and how these contribute to the management of water borne diseases. The impact of gender, marriage, education, and disease in disaster management practices in Zimbabwe and South Africa was analysed. Method - Literature review was conducted on microbial water quality monitoring practices in Zimbabwe and legislature that supports disaster management. Practices of disaster management in Zimbabwe, and South Africa were investigated and compared. The perspective of the Harare community on the quality of their potable water was investigated through the use of a questionnaire and water quality testing was conducted using hydrogen sulphide test and R2A based heterotrophic plate count. Raw water supplying Manyame River and tap water in Harare households were assessed for microbial quality. Results and Discussion - Raw water sources were found to be contaminated by faecal matter. Household water sources had no faecal contamination, but tested positive for heterotrophic bacteria. The CFU/ml quantities obtained ranged from 1- 452 CFU/ml for all samples. The WHO guidelines for domestic water sources recommend that domestic water should have no coliforms/100 ml sample. Disaster management protocols were available in disaster prone areas such as the Matabeleland South Province. No guidelines were in place for monitoring microbial water quality as a disaster prevention method. Conclusion - The current state of treated water supplied by the Morton Jaffray Treatment Plant was found to be suitable for domestic use, but not sufficient to meet the Harare population’s needs. The need to push for legislature supporting microbial water quality monitoring was recognised. Initiating public / private partnerships in water distribution and water quality monitoring in Zimbabwe was encouraged.

A smart home environment to support safety and risk monitoring for the elderly living independently

- Description: The elderly prefer to live independently despite vulnerability to age-related challenges. Constant monitoring is required in cases where the elderly are living alone. The home environment can be a dangerous environment for the elderly living independently due to adverse events that can occur at any time. The potential risks for the elderly living independently can be categorised as injury in the home, home environmental risks and inactivity due to unconsciousness. The main research objective was to develop a Smart Home Environment (SHE) that can support risk and safety monitoring for the elderly living independently. An unobtrusive and low cost SHE solution that uses a Raspberry Pi 3 model B, a Microsoft Kinect Sensor and an Aeotec 4-in-1 Multisensor was implemented. The Aeotec Multisensor was used to measure temperature, motion, lighting, and humidity in the home. Data from the multisensor was collected using OpenHAB as the Smart Home Operating System. The information was processed using the Raspberry Pi 3 and push notifications were sent when risk situations were detected. An experimental evaluation was conducted to determine the accuracy with which the prototype SHE detected abnormal events. Evaluation scripts were each evaluated five times. The results show that the prototype has an average accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of 94%, 96.92% and 88.93% respectively. The sensitivity shows that the chance of the prototype missing a risk situation is 3.08%, and the specificity shows that the chance of incorrectly classifying a non-risk situation is 11.07%. The prototype does not require any interaction on the part of the elderly. Relatives and caregivers can remotely monitor the elderly person living independently via the mobile application or a web portal. The total cost of the equipment used was below R3000.

Antimalarial secondary metabolites from Morinda lucida

- Description: Antimalarial activities of secondary metabolites from Morinda lucida (Rubiaceae), were investigated. Even though M. lucida is traditionally used to treat malaria, diabetes, jaundice, hypertension, dysentery and many other diseases, the compounds in this plant have not yet been fully investigated and characterised. Most of the studies that have been done on this plant focused on the medicinal properties of the crude extracts but have not gone further to isolate and characterise the compounds. In this study, the methanol - dichloromethane crude extract from the bark of M. lucida was fractionated into fractions 1-8. Fractions 2-5 were purified in order to isolate active secondary metabolites. The isolated pure compounds were characterised and identified. An in vitro antimalarial assay was carried out on the crude extract, fractions, pure compounds and solutions made from different combinations of pure compounds using the parasite lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH) assay. An IC50 done on the methanolic crude extract gave a value of 25 µg/mL. The % cell viability for the crude extract in cell toxicity assay remained at 100%. Each of the pure compounds tested had very little activity. Their activities were increased when samples from the different compounds were mixed. One of these mixtures reduced malaria viability to about 22 % at 20 µM and gave an IC50 value of 17 µM. Antibacterial assays were also carried out on the crude extract and fractions. Fractions 2 and 3 were relatively active (MIC values ranging between 125-1000 µg/mL) against M. cattarhalis and E. faecalis. - Description: Antimalarial activities of secondary metabolites from Morinda lucida (Rubiaceae), were investigated. Even though M. lucida is traditionally used to treat malaria, diabetes, jaundice, hypertension, dysentery and many other diseases, the compounds in this plant have not yet been fully investigated and characterised. Most of the studies that have been done on this plant focused on the medicinal properties of the crude extracts but have not gone further to isolate and characterise the compounds. In this study, the methanol - dichloromethane crude extract from the bark of M. lucida was fractionated into fractions 1-8. Fractions 2-5 were purified in order to isolate active secondary metabolites. The isolated pure compounds were characterised and identified. An in vitro antimalarial assay was carried out on the crude extract, fractions, pure compounds and solutions made from different combinations of pure compounds using the parasite lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH) assay. An IC50 done on the methanolic crude extract gave a value of 25 µg/mL. The % cell viability for the crude extract in cell toxicity assay remained at 100%. The activation energy for thermal quenching was then evaluated using luminescence yield during the pulse as 1.09±0.01 eV and as 1.12±0.01 eV using the throughput after the pulse. Using the new analytical method based on integrated intensity, the activation energy for thermal quenching was found as 1.00±0.07 eV. These values are self-consistent and show that the methods for analyzing temperature-induced changes in intensity and the attendant thermal effects, such as thermal assistance can be successfully applied. We have also reported a general mathematical model that accounts for the temperature-dependence of time-resolved luminescence from α-Al2O3:C. The luminescence study was complemented by investigation of the phase and composition heterogeneity of the samples.

Peak I is reproduced under phototransfer after any preheating between 100 and 500 °C. Peak II is also reproduced as a PTTL peak after preheating to any temperature up to 800 °C. For the latter, the duration of preheating matters because if the sample is preheated at 800 °C for say, 6 min, PTTL is obtained but not when this is extended to say, 15 min. No PTTL was observed from peak III at all. A study of the time dependence of the PTTL intensity from peak III, following preheating that removes peaks I and II, shows that its electron trap acts as an acceptor when the duration of illumination to stimulate electrons from deep traps is brief but that when the illumination time is extended, the electron trap for peak III loses some of its trapped electrons to the shallower traps thus acting as a donor trap.

A concurrent mixed methods research design was utilised to address the research questions. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to design the study, collect, and analyse data. Thirty participants comprising of 24 pre-service teachers and six college supervisors were purposively selected for the qualitative study from United College of Education in Zimbabwe. Qualitative data was collected by means of interviews and analysed through a thematic analysis. For the quantitative phase, 300 pre-service teachers were chosen through stratified random sampling from the same institution and were asked to complete a questionnaire. One hundred and ninety-three questionnaires were returned and usable, giving a return rate of 64%. Data from the survey were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings from the study revealed that pre-service teachers experience diverse concerns during teaching practicum that included classroom management, teacher knowledge, socio-economic factors, workload, interpersonal relationships and assessment anxiety. Findings from the quantitative phase revealed some differences in the levels of concerns among the year groups. A general downward trend in the levels of concerns was detected except for teacher beliefs concerns that remained constant. Findings from the qualitative phase of the study revealed that the concerns that pre-service teachers experienced during teaching practicum had negative impact on their classroom practice. Most of the student teachers had devised some coping strategies to deal with their concerns and they were satisfied with the quality of support from mentors and peers, but not that from their supervisors. In an increasingly globalised world, the researcher felt that teaching practicum related concerns could be minimised by exploiting the benefits of digitalised knowledge and communities of learning.

Most of the student teachers had devised some coping strategies to deal with their concerns and they were satisfied with the quality of support from mentors and peers, but not that from their supervisors. In an increasingly globalised world, the researcher felt that teaching practicum related concerns could be minimised by exploiting the benefits of digitalised knowledge and communities of learning.

- Description: Background: South Africa’s Constitution guarantees everyone, including persons with disabilities, the right to education. A variety of laws are in place obliging higher education institutions to provide appropriate physical access to education sites for all. In practice, however, many buildings remain inaccessible to people with physical disabilities. Objectives: To describe what measures South African universities are taking to make their built environments more accessible to students with diverse types of disabilities, and to assess the adequacy of such measures. Method: We conducted semi-structured in-depth face-to-face interviews with disability unit staff members (DUSMs) based at 10 different public universities in South Africa. Results: Challenges with promoting higher education accessibility for wheelchair users include the preservation and heritage justification for failing to modify older buildings, ad hoc approaches to creating accessible environments and failure to address access to toilets, libraries and transport facilities for wheelchair users. Conclusion: South African universities are still not places where all students are equally able to integrate socially. DUSMs know what ought to be done to make campuses more accessible and welcoming to students with disabilities and should be empowered to play a leading role in sensitising non-disabled members of universities, to create greater awareness of, and appreciation for, the multiple ways in which wheelchair user students continue to be excluded from full participation in university life. South African universities need to adopt a systemic approach to inclusion, which fosters an understanding of inclusion as a fundamental right rather than as a luxury.

The in vitro glycosylation of (−)-menthol by uridine diphosphate glycosyltransferase (BLC) from Bacillus licheniformis generated (−)-menthol β-glucoside and new (−)-menthol β-galactoside and (−)-menthol N-acetylglucosamine. The maximum conversion rate of menthol to (−)-menthol β-D-glucoside by BLC was found to be 58.9%. Importantly, (−)-menthol β-D-glucoside had a higher cooling effect and no flavor compared with menthol. In addition, (−)-menthol β-D-glucoside was determined to be a non-sensitizer in a skin allergy test in the human cell line activation test, whereas menthol was a sensitizer.

- Description: Nurse educators are the custodians of nursing education and are faced with the task of providing quality nursing education in a way that inspires and enhances learning. The approach to teaching has moved away from the traditional teacher centre approach to a more student centred, active learning approach. Nurse educators are faced with many challenges, such as creating a learning environment that is conducive to a new and diverse generation of students who have different needs, learning styles and expectations. It is therefore important that the nurse educators strive to enhance the overall learning experience by incorporating teaching strategies that engage students as active participants in the learning process. This study followed a quantitative, descriptive, exploratory and contextual research design in order to determine the activities, educational resources and teaching strategies used to facilitate active learning in a private nursing education institution. The target population was comprised of student nurses registered at the private nursing education institution. The data was collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire from 721 participants at learning centres throughout the country. The statistician used Statistica Version 12 to obtain both a descriptive and a statistical summary of the data. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the common features of the data used and the findings were discussed and summarized in tables and graphs. The ethical principles of informed consent, confidentiality and anonymity, beneficence, non-maleficence, veracity and justice have been maintained throughout this study. This study was conducted in one private nursing education institution in South Africa and only focussed on student nurses. The findings were that the greater majority of the students were encouraged to actively participate in the classroom. Students voiced their preference regarding the activities and teaching strategies utilized. There is disparity and inequality regarding the availability of educational media, resources and facilities. A variety of teaching strategies were utilized in the classrooms of the private NEI, but the use of technology based teaching strategies was limited. Information obtained from nurse educators could provide clarity on their use of teaching strategies to facilitate active learning in the classroom or at least highlight gaps in their knowledge that could help to facilitate training for nurse educators. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations for nursing practice, research and nursing education were made. The main recommendations for nursing education include the continuation of active learning activities given by the nurse educators in the classroom. Nurse educators to take cognisance of the students’ preferences and justify their selection of teaching strategies. The private NEI should ensure the availability and accessibility of educational resources, multimedia and facilities that are essential in teaching students to become self-directed, independent practitioners. Opportunities should be made available for nurse educators to attend seminars or workshops on the use of technology-based teaching strategies and undergo training in the utilization of different strategies that can enhance active learning. This could be included as a mandatory module of the nurse educators’ continuous professional development.

Analysis of the impact of Smallholder Irrigation Schemes on the choice of rural livelihood strategy and household food security in Eastern Cape

- Description: Since the end of Apartheid, the South African government has invested substantially in smallholder irrigation schemes, particularly in the former homeland areas. One of the primary goals for establishment of these schemes was to solve food security problems. Sadly, these efforts have not produced the desired results, and poverty has deepened. The question that can be asked is: What is it that makes South African smallholder agricultural sector seemingly impervious to the interventions that government has made in targeting smallholder farmers since the dawn of democracy in 1994? In order to address such a question, a set of structured questionnaires was used to interview 100 smallholder irrigators and 100 non-irrigators using multistage stratified random sampling technique in the Amatole, Chris Hani and OR Tambo District municipalities. Demographic and socio-economic characteristics of smallholder irrigators and non-irrigators around Qamata, Pendu, Tyhefu, Merelles and Ntshongweni irrigation schemes were measured using descriptive statistics. Profitability between the two groups was measured using gross margin analysis (GM). The Probit model was used to determine the factors that affect smallholder farmer‘s choice of participation in irrigation schemes. The impact of irrigation participation on yields, crop sales and food security was estimated using the propensity score matching (PSM) technique. The impact of irrigation participation of smallholder farmer‘s choice of livelihood strategy was estimated using the multinomial regression model. The results showed that male respondents were dominant with a representation of 63 percent and average mean household size of 4 persons with the household head having spent at least 7 years at school. Farming was found to be the major (64 percent) occupation in the study area with an average income of R2 944.52 per cropping season. Both irrigating and non-irrigating smallholder farmers in the study area used improved, fertilizer and tractor for production. Overall, smallholder farmers spent 30.9 percent of their household income on food with irrigators‘food spending lower than those of non-irrigators. The gross margin analysis suggests that the irrigated farmers were in a better position to afford enough food in order to satisfy their household requirement. Findings from the Probit regression and Propensity Score Matching are consistent across the methods, indicating that irrigation participation has a positive influence on crop yields, income and consumption expenditure. Probit regression further showed that age, quality of land, access to credit, access to market, distance to the scheme and membership of another society/association have a positive impact on access and use of irrigation and are significant at p < 0.05 percent level. The Propensity Score Matching using Nearest Neighbour and Kernel Matching Methods of the outcome variables, total farm income and food consumption patterns, shows a positive and statistically significant result at p < 0.05 percent level. The nearest neighbour matching method shows that irrigators received higher farm income R2044.01 than non-irrigating farmers R622.12. The Average Treatment Effect on total food expenditure was negative both in the case of NNM and KM algorithms, indicating that participation in irrigation can decrease the expenditure levels on food from R933.30 to R926.70. This could be due to the fact that irrigating farmers produced enough for home consumption than non-irrigators. The multinomial regression model shows that irrigation participation influences smallholder farmers choice of livelihood strategy and these variables were statistically significant at p < 0.05 percent level. These results provide insights to address the question as to the appropriate development path for transition from homestead to irrigation. Continued support to smallholder farmers in the forms of funding, extension services and improved technologies is certainly needed to enhance food security.
