Access to justice for female victims of crime: a study of girls and women with disabilities in Mashonaland Central Province of Zimbabwe

- Description: This thesis utilized a thematic content analysis, looked at how significant barriers affect Mashonaland Central girls and women living with disabilities as victims of crime from accessing justice. Zimbabwe is an optimal case to apply this study, due to its contradictory legislation and evidence of high rate of human rights violations. Mashonaland Central Province is an ideal case study due to the extant records that indicate that it has the highest incidences of violence against women. This study is therefore based in a Victimological epoch with the aim to fill the research gap in acknowledging the process of accessing justice as an important step for protecting and promoting human right. By analyzing interviews conducted with 3 different women aged 18-65 and 3 girls living with disability who were under the age of 18, through the theoretical framework of basic human rights theory and victim dynamics, this thesis contributes to the existing body of knowledge, with suggestions of how these barriers which are inclusive of societal and cultural structures tend to affect the respondents’ everyday lives and in a most pertinent manner towards their right to access justice. This thesis is also governed by the perspectives of key actors in the judicial process including but not limited to the Victim Friendly Unit. The theoretical framework is also operationalized into themes and criteria, which are then applied to analyze the conducted interviews. The emerging findings illuminate that there is a discrepancy between government policy surrounding girls and women living with disabilities and the practical experiences of the respondents. The respondents experienced a lack of accessibility to basic rights such as health care, the law, and to sex education – which are all rights ensured by government policy. Identified consequences included: discouragement in seeking justice due to fears of cultural and social stigma, discouragement in reporting crimes, and receiving adequate support, as well as information from secondhand sources. Accountability of the police to provincial governments in South Africa: a comparative analysis of law and practice in the eastern and Western Cape Provinces

- Description: The 2012 Constitutional Court matter between the national minister of police and the premier of the Western Cape (Minister of Police v Premier of the Western Cape 2013 (12) BCLR 1365 (CC)) concerning the exercise of provincial policing powers as provided for in chapter 11 of the Constitution of South Africa laid bare the tension between the national and provincial governments in the exercise of these powers. Despite the Court’s determination of the dispute, there are still grey areas regarding the constitutional obligations of the provinces with regard to policing. The result has been a lack of clarity and uniformity in the exercise of policing powers by various provinces in South Africa. Based on documentary analysis and interviews, this study explores the parameters of the powers of provinces in policing matters as well as the extent of accountability of the police to provincial governments in South Africa by comparing the law and practice in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces. The study argues that if provinces are to effectively exercise their constitutional powers in policing matters, there needs to be a degree of uniformity in and a mutual understanding of the extent and parameters of provincial policing powers. Only when they clearly understand their powers in policing matters will provincial governments be able to develop legal and policy frameworks to consolidate their powers and effectively hold the police accountable. The study considers whether the current policing powers afforded to provinces are adequate and if not, whether constitutional reform is needed to afford provinces more and clearer policing powers. Furthermore, within the context of participatory democracy, the study takes an in-depth look into the accountability role of Community Police Forums. The study finds that, generally, provincial governments fall short in fulfilling the obligations imposed on them by the Constitution. The study further finds that, in practice, there is still uncertainty about the role of the provincial governments and the Civilian Secretariat for Police in policing matters. Among the recommendations of this study is that section 206 (1) of the Constitution be amended to give provinces power to formulate policing policy in respect of issues peculiar to a particular province. Adsorption of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their cell-free deoxyribonucleic acid harbouring resistance genes in drinking water with metal oxides

The incidence of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria ARB in drinking water and subsequent proliferation of Antibiotic Resistance Genes ARGs in drinking water is a concern for public health. The free DNA cassette harboring antibiotic resistance gene in drinking water has been linked with impaired public health. The ARGs allows bacteria to develop resistance towards antibiotics while ARB render antibiotics ineffective. Existing drinking water treatment technologies eg adsorption, ozonation and chlorination, have shown different levels of potency in the removal of conventional water pollutant. These technologies, which operating principles is based on oxidation or mass transfer, have been explored to gained an insight into their efficiency in the removal of ARB ARGs in water treatment. In general, methods that functions by mass transfer of the ARB ARGs is more effectively than bacteria oxidation. Consequently, adsorption technology was chosen using common metal oxide adsorbents. The adsorbents ZnOAg CeO2 and Al2O3 were synthesized via the self propagation combustion method. This method was selected because of the purity of the final product and the energy requirement. One of the challenges in the removal of ARB in drinking water is the release of ARGs. To address this concern, five different ZnOAg heterostructures were synthesized for the removal of Enterococci faecium. ZnOAg was chosen because of the bactericidal and bacteriostatic characteristics. The study revealed that the concentration of the precursors influences the microstructures of the adsorbents; however, it did not significantly affect the adsorption efficiency. The maximum adsorption capacity q34.11 CFUg was obtained for Ag1Zn3.5. The kinetic studies revealed that Ag1Zn1 and Ag1Zn2 adsorbents agreed to the pseudofirst-order kinetic equation and adsorbents Ag2Zn1 Ag3.5Zn1 and Ag1Zn3.5 agreed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. Initial tap-water pH range was beneficial for the adsorption and the pH of the treated tap-water was within the WHO tap water recommendation 6.5 – 8.5 whereas the effect of ionic strength, anionic and cationic interference was insignificant in the adsorption of MDREF onto the different heterostructure. Interestingly the MDREF could retain its cell membrane integrity and resistance genes, suggesting that surface adsorption was the primary mechanism for the removal. Cerium IV oxide CeO2 was selected because of high adsorption towards phosphate, backbone base for DNA. To prevent the problem of antibiotic resistance, we have synthesized a CeO2 adsorbent that exhibit highly positive character in a wide pH range, via the simple self-propagation combustion protocol, for the removal of free DNA harboring antibiotic resistance genes. Molecular characterization of the extracted genes showed that the sizes for E. coli and inherent gyrB genes are 147 and 460 bp with a purity between 19 2.0. The XRD SEM TEM, and PZC results of the as-synthesized CeO2 showed an agglomerate of pure cubic-faced centered material and highly crystalline, with a net charge at pH 6.2. Experimental results revealed that the reaction proceeded via pseudo first-order kinetic, and it is governed by electrostatic attraction. The free- DNA solution pH electrolyte, and competing ions impacted on the adsorption process. Further experimental results showed that the as-synthesized CeO2 adsorbent has the potential to be used for the removal of free DNA harboring ARGs from tap-water even under oxic conditions. Alumina Al2O3 is an abundant adsorbent that has also shown high removal capacity towards phosphate. The highly pure synthesized Al2O3 adsorbent exhibit fluid-like behaviour under Scanning Electron Microscope SEM. The XRD pattern corresponds to αAl2O3. The adsorption kinetics was described by pseudo second orderadsorption capacity 11.7 μgg implying chemisorption, which agrees with the electrostatic force of attraction caused by opposing ions. This result was evident by the effect of different ions in the tap water. Agricultural entrepreneurship development as strategy for economic empowerment: The case of small-scale farmers in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

- Description: This study emanated from the struggle for economic empowerment among small-scale farmers in South African. The study advocates for the establishment of a viable environment where agricultural entrepreneurship can thrive. While the South African Nation Development Plan (NDP) proposed to create one million jobs through agricultural sector by 2030, the majority of small-scale farmers in South Africa are struggling to grow beyond the level of subsistence farming, and the youths appear not to be interested in the farming. It is therefore become necessary to conduct this current study that is exploratory in nature; it explored several factors and barriers to agricultural entrepreneurship development, as well as factors that can contribute to the development of prosperous and sustainable agricultural entrepreneurship among small-scale farmers in South African. The study was conducted in two district municipalities of Eastern Cape Province of South Africa – OR Tambo and Chris Hani. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to make findings. Findings from the study shows that economic empowerment can be achieved through agricultural entrepreneurship development by giving adequate attention to specific factors like individuals’ attitude, production skills, access to market and marketing skills, management skills. Empirically, basic components like personal interests, adequate training and background, efficient extension service, famers’ network and communication, specific goal-oriented, understanding market, farmers’ collaboration, and access to sufficient funding are few of the factors that will make the small-scale farmers grow to the level of commercial farming. The study concluded that prerequisite to developing a sustainable agricultural entrepreneurship climate among small-scale farmers in South African is the combination of basic components aforementioned. - Description: Low nitrogen stress tolerant Quality Protein Maize (QPM) genotypes will be of great benefit to farmers for increasing productivity in nitrogen depleted soils in the Eastern Cape (EC) Province, South Africa (SA). The current study evaluated: (i) QPM inbred lines for tolerance to low soil nitrogen, (ii) the Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) of different QPM inbred lines, (iii) the combining ability of QPM genotypes for tolerance to low nitrogen, grain yield, and other agro-morphological traits, and (iv) the agro-morphological characteristics and adaptation of QPM hybrids to environments of different production potential in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Thirty-two white-seeded QPM inbred lines obtained from CIMMYT-Zimbabwe and Quality Seeds (PTY) LTD were evaluated for tolerance to low soil nitrogen stress using two nitrogen (N) treatment levels: 0 kg N ha-1 and 30 kg N ha-1 under both glasshouse and field conditions at the Crop Research farm, University of Fort Hare, in two planting seasons. The study aimed at assessing the response of QPM inbred lines to low N, with a view to identifying low N tolerant types under both glasshouse and field conditions. Shoot length stress tolerance index (SHL STI) indicated lines L23, L29, L27, L13, L16, L17, L31, L14, L18 and L22 to be low soil N tolerant from the glasshouse study. From the field study, low N Stress Tolerance Index (STI) identified inbred lines L23, L31, L26, L28, L25, L29, L32, L4, L6, L3 and L2 as low soil N tolerant. These inbred lines also had high grain yields (GY) in the field under 0 kg N ha-1 (all ranked within the top ten except L2). They also had the potential for stable yields across environments considering their high Yield Stability Index (YSI), Mean Productivity (MP), Geometric Mean Productivity (GMP) and Stress Susceptibility Index (SSI) values. Both the glasshouse and field studies revealed inbred lines L22, L23, L26, L28, L25, L29 and L31 were common to both the glasshouse and field studies as being low soil N tolerant. These thirty-two parental QPM inbred lines were evaluated in the field for their nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) under five different nitrogen levels: 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg N ha-1. The inbred lines studied under 0 kg N ha-1 and 30 kg N ha-1 indicated that N level expressed highly significant differences (P ≤ 0.001) for total nitrogen in biomass (Bio Total N), total nitrogen in grain (G Total N), grain yield (GY), nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and almost all the indices estimated. The top six nutrient use efficient genotypes were L9, L14, L23, L25, L29 and L32 across N levels. However, the best and highest NUE was obtained from the lowest fertilizer dose, 30 kg N ha-1. Highly significant and positive correlation coefficients were found between Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) and yield (+0.9), NUE and NUtE (+0.9), NUE and HI (Harvest Index) (+0.5), NUtE and yield (+0.99), HI and yield (+0.5) and NUtE and HI (+0.5). Thus, NUE, HI and NUtE could be good predictors of yield potential under low N soil conditions. Sixty-four testcross hybrids were generated from crossing these 32 QPM inbred lines with two QPM open pollinated varieties (OPVs) as testers in a line x tester design and were evaluated under 0 kg N ha-1 and 30 kg N ha-1 in the field. The objectives of the experiment were to: (i) identify high yielding hybrids with tolerance to low soil N in the EC; (ii) determine the combining abilities and mode of gene action for various traits under low and high nitrogen conditions; and (iii) group the inbred lines into heterotic groups for future use in the breeding program. Results revealed that under 30 kg N ha-1 (30N) condition, both additive and non-additive gene effects were observed with less importance of non-additive gene action for grain yield. Based on specific combining ability (SCA) effects, hybrids LNC22, LNC31, LOB22, LNC30, LNC29, LOB11, LNC18, LOB30, LOB19 and LNC24 showed outstanding performance under 0 kg N ha-1 (0N) condition with relatively acceptable SCA under 30N for yield. Inbred lines L6 (1.63), L22 (1.74), L29 (1.83) and L30 (1.24) showed positive and significant GCAs for grain yield under 0N. They were identified as the best combiners for grain yield as they were among the top ten performers for GCA under 0N. They can be very useful sources of low N tolerance genes. Two heterotic groups were formed under 0 kg N ha-1 and 30 kg N ha-1 conditions, and they will be useful for future hybrid development in the breeding program. Furthermore, these thirty-two QPM inbred lines were utilised as parental lines to generate seventy-six single cross hybrids. These single cross hybrids were evaluated across three environments of varying production potential in the Eastern Cape (EC), during the 2016/17 and 2017/18 summer seasons. Non-QPM hybrids namely PAN5Q649R and Phb31MO7BR, as well as QPM OPVs OBATANPA and Nelson's Choice were included in these preliminary variety trials (PVTs) as checks. Inbred lines L29 and L22 also produced testcross hybrids that were among the top twenty based on GY under 0 kg N ha-1. The testcross hybrids produced from these inbred lines were also among the top twenty-five with outstanding SCA effects for GY. These inbred lines were also parental lines of some of the top twenty- five best hybrids selected based on the Smith – Hazel selection index in the PVT study. - Description: Low nitrogen stress tolerant Quality Protein Maize (QPM) genotypes will be of great benefit to farmers for increasing productivity in nitrogen depleted soils in the Eastern Cape (EC) Province, South Africa (SA). The current study evaluated: (i) QPM inbred lines for tolerance to low soil nitrogen, (ii) the Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) of different QPM inbred lines, (iii) the combining ability of QPM genotypes for tolerance to low nitrogen, grain yield, and other agro-morphological traits, and (iv) the agro-morphological characteristics and adaptation of QPM hybrids to environments of different production potential in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Thirty-two white-seeded QPM inbred lines obtained from CIMMYT-Zimbabwe and Quality Seeds (PTY) LTD were evaluated for tolerance to low soil nitrogen stress using two nitrogen (N) treatment levels: 0 kg N ha-1 and 30 kg N ha-1 under both glasshouse and field conditions at the Crop Research farm, University of Fort Hare, in two planting seasons. The study aimed at assessing the response of QPM inbred lines to low N, with a view to identifying low N tolerant types under both glasshouse and field conditions. Shoot length stress tolerance index (SHL STI) indicated lines L23, L29, L27, L13, L16, L17, L31, L14, L18 and L22 to be low soil N tolerant from the glasshouse study. From the field study, low N Stress Tolerance Index (STI) identified inbred lines L23, L31, L26, L28, L25, L29, L32, L4, L6, L3 and L2 as low soil N tolerant. These inbred lines also had high grain yields (GY) in the field under 0 kg N ha-1 (all ranked within the top ten except L2). They also had the potential for stable yields across environments considering their high Yield Stability Index (YSI), Mean Productivity (MP), Geometric Mean Productivity (GMP) and Stress Susceptibility Index (SSI) values. Both the glasshouse and field studies revealed inbred lines L22, L23, L26, L28, L25, L29 and L31 were common to both the glasshouse and field studies as being low soil N tolerant. These thirty-two parental QPM inbred lines were evaluated in the field for their nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) under five different nitrogen levels: 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg N ha-1. The inbred lines studied under 0 kg N ha-1 and 30 kg N ha-1 indicated that N level expressed highly significant differences (P ≤ 0.001) for total nitrogen in biomass (Bio Total N), total nitrogen in grain (G Total N), grain yield (GY), nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and almost all the indices estimated. The top six nutrient use efficient genotypes were L9, L14, L23, L25, L29 and L32 across N levels. However, the best and highest NUE was obtained from the lowest fertilizer dose, 30 kg N ha-1. Highly significant and positive correlation coefficients were found between Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) and yield (+0.9), NUE and NUtE (+0.9), NUE and HI (Harvest Index) (+0.5), NUtE and yield (+0.99), HI and yield (+0.5) and NUtE and HI (+0.5). Thus, NUE, HI and NUtE could be good predictors of yield potential under low N soil conditions. Sixty-four testcross hybrids were generated from crossing these 32 QPM inbred lines with two QPM open pollinated varieties (OPVs) as testers in a line x tester design and were evaluated under 0 kg N ha-1 and 30 kg N ha-1 in the field. The objectives of the experiment were to: (i) identify high yielding hybrids with tolerance to low soil N in the EC; (ii) determine the combining abilities and mode of gene action for various traits under low and high nitrogen conditions; and (iii) group the inbred lines into heterotic groups for future use in the breeding program. Results revealed that under 30 kg N ha-1 (30N) condition, both additive and non-additive gene effects were observed with less importance of non-additive gene action for grain yield. Such considerations necessitates that some focus on continental and world institutions, such as, the African Union and the United Nations. These institutions have been in existence for a number of years with mandates of improving member states governance and ethics, as well as, service delivery to the public. As such, this research primarily focuses on understanding the roles played by the AU and the UN in shaping governance and ethics to member states, as well as, of its employees. The focus of this inquiry was to understand individual narratives about how working for public institutions on a daily to day basis influences governance and ethics understanding and application. Therefore, in order to properly analyse the narratives from respondents, the study applied an inductive and qualitative approach in order to explore how the AU and UN systems influence governance and ethics for member s states and employees. Data was collected through semi structured interviews with UN and AU officials, as well as public servants of member states for those organisations. The study made use of a thematic analyses method of interpreting data. A total of six major themes emerged, they are as follows: ethics a part in governance; effectiveness of AU and UN systems; disciplinary role; ethical guidelines and standards influence on public sector; member states adherence to the UN/AU ethical conduct; and implementation gaps in ethical guidelines within member states. Interviews were conducted in four countries namely; South Africa, Tanzania, Mauritius and Botswana. Findings from the study pointed that the AU and UN systems have loopholes in dealing with issues of governance and ethics. Moreover, member states respondents also pointed to the loopholes in those two organisations. The research suggests that member states should tighten their public entities ethical compliance assessments and follow suggestions from the UN and AU. - Description: This study emerges in the period whereby innovation has become relevant in today’s society. Globally, universities are shifting from being merely centers of learning to becoming entrepreneurial universities as they are commercialising their intellectual property (IP). This study analyses IP awareness among researchers at University of Fort Hare (UFH). The study was informed by the pragmatic paradigm and a mixed-methods design was used to collect data. The study focuses on IP awareness activities conducted between 2016 and 2019, data was collected between January 2020 and November 2020 as there was need for collecting more data from the Innovation Office to supplement the data that was initially collected. Closed ended questionnaires were distributed to researchers at UFH since they are potential IP creators, an open-ended questionnaire was also used to collect data from one key informant from the Innovation Office, and a semi-structured interview was conducted with one key informant from the Innovation Office at UFH. Thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data from qualitative responses on questionnaires, interview responses and the UFH IP policy. Statistical Package for Social Sciences and Microsoft Excel were used to analyse quantitative data. The study revealed that the UFH Innovation Office employs various communication strategies to create awareness of IP among researchers and that the Office hosts at least three IP workshops each year. The study found out that methods used to create awareness include social media posts, email communication, distributing booklets and fliers that contain IP information, interactive discussions with IP experts, and small visits to faculty researchers, or research groups to conduct presentations on IP. However, despite these initiatives at the University, the study found out that researchers have a low level of IP awareness and this needs to be addressed by the Innovation Office. Interestingly, the results further indicated that UFH values IP and in responding to the requirements of the Intellectual Property Rights from Publicly Funded Research Act, of 2008, the University established its Technology Transfer Office that is responsible for facilitation of commercialisation of research outputs and creating awareness of IP among researchers. The study recommends the need to improve communication strategies for IP awareness and that the Office should employ diversified strategies to educate researchers about the importance of IP and its protection and that awareness activities should not be a once off activity but continuous. The study also recommends the University and the government to consider incorporating IP modules in the curriculum of all disciplines so that every student and researcher would have the knowledge of IP and how it affects people’s lives. These errors include different regular language components, such as grammar, spelling, word division, punctuation, vocabulary, capitalization, syntax and semantics. Additional to these errors are the newly discovered categories of anomalies, such as new lexical items, incomplete words, incorrect word construction, inter-categorical range, multiple deviations and writing inconsistencies. The writing of these learners not only reflects various orthographic errors and inconsistency in their usage of isiXhosa, which translates into language deficiency, but also implies gaps within the education system and its policies, as well as inefficient isiXhosa curriculum design as some of the factors contributing to the existence of these errors. Possible causes of these errors include educational causes; lack of orthographic knowledge and limited reading, socio-cultural causes; interference of other languages and the influence of the media, and attitudinal causes; lack of respect and contempt for the language and lack of learner interest in the language. Adopting a combined mixed method with a predominantly qualitative approach, this study examines errors presented in the writings of Grade 11 isiXhosa L1 learners with a view to establishing the nature and scope of these errors. The key objectives of this study were investigated by means of scientific papers both published and publishable as book chapters, books, dissertations, education policies, online publications and journal articles - both international and accredited journals. Drawing on various conceptual and analytical frameworks (Hymes 1972; Corder 1981), the study scrutinizes the contents and presents observations of the elements and themes that emanate from the eighteen (18) learners’ isiXhosa essays and seven (7) voice-recorded isiXhosa teachers and subject advisers’ interviews which were used as data. Findings reveal that learners struggle to master some language aspects, with their usage reflecting serious deviations from the standard orthography. These findings have serious implications for language teaching and learning as these errors tend to affect the learners’ linguistic competence and performance, language development, as well as language conservation. Also, serious violations of the standard orthographic rules are noticeable; and this observation raises concerns about the fate and sustainability of the language. It is recommended that interventions and strategies be applied in respect of the teaching and learning of isiXhosa in order to maintain its standard orthography, to preserve the language, improve the learning and teaching of the language, maintain communicative competence and facilitate appropriate application of the language in a learning context, especially in speaking and writing. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, 2021

- Description: This study analysed the schooling outcomes of the Eastern Cape Department of Basic Education in the period heading into the second decade of democracy. The main objective of the thesis is to discover what constitutes the education production function of the Eastern Cape schooling system. In an attempt to reach this objective, the study adopted an education production function approach to answer the questions of what constitute the Eastern Cape education production function, what the effects are of the Dinaledi policy interventions on learner performance and the effects of district size on schooling outcomes. The main focus of the constituents of the production function is on the level of the former Bantustan penalty and Department of Education and Training (DET) penalty in relation to former White schools; as well as the quality of educators in the province. The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and quantile regressions were used to analyse the data and the Annual National Assessment (ANA) represented schooling outcomes and was estimated against school, educator and community characteristics. The results indicated a strong relationship between schooling outcomes and the school inputs that were used in the study. The effects of the Dinaledi intervention programme were analysed using the grade 12 panel data for the period from 2008 to 2013, where event dropout rates represented schooling outcomes. The findings that emerged from this study indicated that this programme provides a model that can improve the Eastern Cape schooling outcomes. The effects of district size on schooling outcomes were analysed with the regression discontinuity design technique and this revealed that district sizes have an impact on schooling outcomes. Overall, the results suggested that White schools perform better than their counterparts; that placing schools in quintiles is a good policy intervention; and that educator quality is associated with schooling outcomes. - Description: This study analysed the schooling outcomes of the Eastern Cape Department of Basic Education in the period heading into the second decade of democracy. The main objective of the thesis is to discover what constitutes the education production function of the Eastern Cape schooling system. In an attempt to reach this objective, the study adopted an education production function approach to answer the questions of what constitute the Eastern Cape education production function, what the effects are of the Dinaledi policy interventions on learner performance and the effects of district size on schooling outcomes. The main focus of the constituents of the production function is on the level of the former Bantustan penalty and Department of Education and Training (DET) penalty in relation to former White schools; as well as the quality of educators in the province. The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and quantile regressions were used to analyse the data and the Annual National Assessment (ANA) represented schooling outcomes and was estimated against school, educator and community characteristics. The results indicated a strong relationship between schooling outcomes and the school inputs that were used in the study. The effects of the Dinaledi intervention programme were analysed using the grade 12 panel data for the period from 2008 to 2013, where event dropout rates represented schooling outcomes. The findings that emerged from this study indicated that this programme provides a model that can improve the Eastern Cape schooling outcomes. This is particularly the case for the manufacturing sector where continuous improvement in the quest to become efficient is of utmost importance. Lean Manufacturing (LM) has been implemented globally and has proven itself to be a benchmark manufacturing practice for achieving continuous improvement directed at business success with respect to increase revenue and business growth. Within the South African manufacturing industry, especially amongst automotive manufacturing sector, Lean Manufacturing has been widely implemented with mixed success. As Lean Manufacturing affects both processes and people, lean principles become key contributors for successful implementation within manufacturing. This study aimed to identify key principles required to improve the success of Lean Manufacturing implementation in the local manufacturing industry in South Africa. The research conducted identified pertinent aspects of LM that could be applied within the SA context. It begins with a review of current literature on Lean Manufacturing, exploring several topics which are relevant to the study. Lean Manufacturing literature was then summarised and tabulated into the Principles and supportive behavioural elements for successful Lean implementation. Important aspects identified during the research that are required for successful LM implementation were Teamwork, Engagement / Commitment, Ideas / Suggestions, Communication, Improvement Culture, Training and Committed Leadership. Then, a literature review on African Leadership was conducted, exploring various elements of leadership and principles that are instilled in leaders within Africa. Key elements from this literature were summarised and tabulated into the Principles and supportive behavioural elements within African Leadership. For African Leadership, principles such as Communalism, Collectivism, Humaneness, Mutual Respect and Cross Cultural Literacy were identified as Uniquely African Traditional Leadership Principles required to be present for successful Lean implementation. These summaries formed the basis from which two self-constructed questionnaires and a Uniquely African Traditional Leadership Principles Interview were compiled. The two self-constructed questionnaires and interview were used as measuring instruments to measure the presence of the above mentioned principles and behavioural elements within organisations and determine whether they have an impact on the sustainability of Lean Manufacturing implementation. Finding from this research indicated that the Uniquely African Traditional Leadership Principles identified were present within organisations, but to an even greater extent within organisations that have successfully implemented Lean Manufacturing. This indicates that Uniquely African Traditional Leadership Principles have a positive effect on the sustainability of Lean Manufacturing implementation. The investigator got accurate and verified reflections, experiences and understandings of four constructs surrounding the internship programme and they include recruitment and employment of Interns using Best Practices, Training and Development Programmes for Interns Training, Performance Management and Development System for Interns and Mentoring as a Tool to Transfer Knowledge, Skills, Competencies and Attitudes required to Perform Optimally. During interviews, the researcher requested permission from the participants to record their responses digitally. This was done to make sure that no data was lost during the writing of responses from the participants. The questionnaires that were distributed to the interns and mentors had closed-ended questions, but the validity of the questionnaire was ensured by having a space for comments under each question to allow participants to support their answers. An analysis of the questionnaire was done by employing Microsoft Excel and statistics that are descriptive and inferential. The study findings revealed that the recruitment and employment of interns using best practices had a mean score above the required mean of 3, meaning that it is applied acceptably. The ELIDZ strategy came as a response to the need for a robust catalyst for sustainable regional economic development, industrial diversification and to create meaningful employment opportunities in the country. It was supposed to provide customised solutions for various industries including automotive, agro-processing and aqua-culture. However, an Industrial Development Zone should promote innovati on and entrepreneurship to stimulate economic growth and global competitiveness. Economic stagnation, joblessness and inequality continue to be a reality for the previously marginalised groups after 16 years of the ELIDZ despite significant investments in the automotive sector, the growth of companies that supply Mercedes Benz with parts and the establishment and growth of innovative start-up companies at the ELIDZ Science and Technology Park (STP). Massive joblessness, poverty and economic stagnation had followed the collapse of the old industrial parks. The ELIDZ strategy of industrial development came as a response to the demise of the old parks and was meant to become the main vehicle for job creation, local innovation and global competitiveness. This study therefore investigated the extent to which innovation and entrepreneurship have fared in driving sustainable local economic development and how they have impacted jobs at the ELIDZ and within the East London community. The study was qualitative in nature and employed the non-probability sampling technique. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informants that included Industrialists, Business Executives that were tenants at the ELIDZ, the Buffalo City Municipal Metro and community members with knowledge of and association with the ELIDZ. This was augmented by desktop and observational data. It was found that innovation and entrepreneurship was still a fairly new phenomenon at the ELIDZ and their flagships had the vision but were not yet driving sustainable local economic development to a large extent. The model lacks adequate diversification as most of the innovation projects are in the renewable energy and information communication spaces. Very few have made it to mass production with downstream industry employment creation for plumbers, artisans and marketers involved in the supply, distribution, instalment and maintenance of the Hotspot and Thin-film solar panels. New industrialists like YEKANI Technologies and Manufacturing and KGI Holdings, already employ some people and have the vision to employ thousands more of young people. The main innovation and entrepreneurship projects of the ELIDZ have had some impact at the grassroots level even though it is still limited. Too few jobs have been created compared to the old industrial parks model. The ELIDZ is therefore playing an important (albeit limited) role as a local employment creator, even though it has not revitalised the Eastern Cape manufacturing landscape. Due to its highly technology driven and specialised skills nature, the ELIDZ model is benefiting the few and therefore has not yet been an effective instrument to resolve the disturbing levels of inequality, poverty and unemployment, that underlie racial, class and gender dynamics in East London. The study concluded that innovation and entrepreneurship projects at the ELIDZ were contributing towards driving sustainable local economic development to some degree. An efficient approach for the synthesis of dolutegravir and its analogue exploiting flow chemistry

- Description: Africa has the highest Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevalence in the world and has invested heavily in running its HIV programmes and conducting research of medical significance. Despite efforts in combating this disease the production, distribution, cost, and availability of antiretroviral (ARV) generics remains a major problem as they are imported from China and India. Exploring the recently emerged “enabling technique”, namely flow chemistry in the production of APIs has gained a lot of attention. This study was devoted on exploring the application of flow chemistry on the synthesis of a newly approved anti-HIV drug dolutegravir (DTG); an integrase inhibitor with a high genetic barrier to resistance with a daily dosing scheduled compared to other ARVs and its third-generation inhibitor analogue, cabotegravir. Chapter one covers a comprehensive background and literature review of the HIV epidemic, an introduction of antiretroviral therapy as well as detailed dolutegravir and cabotegravir synthesis. A brief introduction of continuous flow technology with its advantages and disadvantages is discussed in this chapter. The efficient seven-step continuous flow procedure afforded dolutegravir and cabotegravir in improved reaction times and yields compared to the traditional batch procedure was demonstrated. The significant advantage of this flow process includes the reduction of the overall reaction time from step one to step seven, from prolonged 68 hours in batch to 34 minutes. The overall yield of each reaction step improved dramatically upon flow optimization. The yields of the second step (selective ester hydrolysis), fourth step (cyclization) and fifth step (amidation) increased from 64 %, 40 % and 33 % in batch to 98 %, 71 % and 100 % yield by HPLC respectively. Other than improved yields and residence times which was aided advantages of microreactor technology including intensive mixing, the flow process is also much better because it is cost effective. Since its revelation, Islam has been filtered through a succession of cultural growth, reflecting the complex ways in which religious beliefs and social reality accommodate one another. Islam possesses a unifying framework which is provided by the Quran (Islam’s primary source regarded by Muslims as God’s revealed word) as the quintessential source along with the Hadith (the statements and deeds of Prophet Muhammad [Peace be unto him]) and language of the religion of Islam. This unity is accompanied by a multitude of diversities that must be considered in any discussion regarding Islam and its practice by Muslims. The Muslim women presented in this thesis were specifically from the Malabar area in Port Elizabeth, where different interpretations or perspectives of Islam exist. Malabar was created in 1961 under the Group Areas Act of 1950 in terms of which the Apartheid government forced people of different race categories to live separately. In a variety of societies and communities where legislation, customs, and traditions are affected or inspired by interpretations of the Quran and Sunnah, they combine to define the roles and status of men and women. Within a specific Muslim society, however, these may vary from one class or generation to another. Muslim women’s lives and the choices they face are influenced as much by patriarchal social arrangements as they are by religious ideology. The research is centred around the interpretations of Islam and what these interpretations mean for Muslim women and their participation in sports, while also considering the interconnectedness of personal choice and the rules and regulations of Islam. The objective of this study was to critically analyse the effect that the different interpretations of Islam have on Muslim women’s participation in sporting activities, as iii well as the barriers that Muslim women face during their involvement in sports. The research adopted a qualitative research method in which 20 Muslim women were interviewed, with the use of semi-structured interview schedules, as well as participant observation to collect the necessary data. A case study method was used to share the data collected from interviews. Furthermore, an auto-ethnographic method is also utilized for self-reflection and to explore personal experience relevant to this research. This thesis also draws on the Marxist feminist theoretical approach, focusing on investigating and explaining how women are oppressed through systems of capitalism and private property. Marxism and feminism are theories of power, which is distributed unequally in society. In researching gender, religion, and sport, I found that the relationship between Muslim women and sport is understood in different ways because of different interpretations of Islam and its teachings, often between one generation to the next and amongst various Muslim communities. Thus, individuals who are passionate about their sport will go the extra mile to ensure participation. In some cases, this would be regardless of the rules and regulations of Islam. Muslim women across the world have made many strides and overcome many barriers in sport. Over the years, although not favourably portrayed in the media, participation by women has increased drastically over time. Yet, despite the opportunities presented by the entrepreneurial ecosystem, it is both under-theorized and lacks data on a sub-national scale. Furthermore, research from an African and sub-Saharan African context remains in its infancy. The limited research within these resource-constrained countries creates a challenge to determine the underlying factors that influence entrepreneurship. As a result, developing economies, as in the case of sub-Saharan Africa, have applied generalizations of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, which undermine the temporal differences of places and reduce the potential to benefit from agglomeration economies. With the National Development Plan: Vision 2030, the South African government strives to achieve an inclusive economy through enhancing the capacity of the state, building capabilities, and promoting partnerships amongst sectors. Motivated by the mandate to redress the inequality caused by economic exclusion, the South African government has taken counteractive measures focused on promoting entrepreneurship as a key driver of economic growth. Despite the measures placed, South Africa struggles with high levels of inequality with a Gini coefficient of 0.63, unemployment of 32.6% and negative GDP per capita growth of - 8.137%. Furthermore, most small businesses in South Africa are informal, which means that a disproportionate concentration of employment exists in the informal sector. Against this backdrop, the problem addressed in this study is based on the challenge of creating productive entrepreneurship that acknowledges the unique structure and resources of Nelson Mandela Bay. To address this gap, a critical inquiry into entrepreneurial ecosystems was motivated. First, the inquiry is focused on a real-world context, namely Nelson Mandela Bay, which is one of the eight metropolitan regions in South Africa, a developing economy. Second, the inquiry uses multiple perspectives through multiple data collection methods. To commence the inquiry, a literature review was conducted on secondary sources to identify the factors influencing entrepreneurial ecosystems and formed the basis of the theoretical framework. The study followed the pragmatism research philosophy and used an abductive research approach. In South Africa, counterfactual impact evaluation methods have rarely been applied to local conservation interventions, and therefore evidence for the effectiveness of key strategic national conservation approaches is lacking. This study evaluated three area-based interventions that together aim to avoid the loss of areas most important for the persistence of biodiversity in the terrestrial realm as evidence towards the effectiveness of South Africa’s landscape approach to biodiversity conservation. The first intervention, South Africa’s National Protected Area Expansion Strategy (NPAES), set ambitious targets to double the extent of South Africa’s protected area network while ensuring that the expansion preferentially occurs in areas of under-represented biodiversity. The strategy was evaluated in terms of its effectiveness in guiding protected area expansion towards more equitable representation of South Africa’s biodiversity through an assessment of changes in indicators of protected area expansion decision-making before and after the implementation of the strategy. The second intervention is the use of maps of biodiversity priorities to guide land use change decisions outside protected areas. Impact was evaluated as avoided loss of Critical Biodiversity Areas (CBAs), which need to remain in a natural condition to meet in situ conservation targets for species, ecosystems, and ecological processes. Avoided loss in CBAs was benchmarked against avoided loss in protected areas, to contextualize the effectiveness of land use planning as a conservation intervention. Lastly, the effectiveness of stricter land use regulations for threatened ecosystems to reduce land conversion pressure on these ecosystems was evaluated. This study examines whether the interaction between the UCT management and RMF could be considered ‘political listening’, and the possible role of the Cape Times newspaper within this context of participation. Using data gathered through interviews, written communications, observation and newspaper articles, the study shows that in all of the interactions between RMF and the UCT management, both groups were seldom willing to forego their power to engage in genuine listening. Instead, the two parties guessed at what power the other party might have and acted to reduce that power. It is in this context of guessing at and figuring what power the other party has that listening occurs. Furthermore, the study shows that during the RMF protest, the UCT management viewed their responsibility for the institution mainly through the lens of Private Property Law which framed protest as something to be dealt with by restoring law and order. The study also details the role of the Cape Times newspaper in the interactions between RMF and the UCT management and considers if this role could be political listening. Local government in Zimbabwe, though being nearest to the people, is showing evidence of failure to discharge its mandate. Various factors have been used to explain the reasons behind local government‘s failures to provide services. None of these have touched on the role played by people management in ensuring local government performance. This was notwithstanding the fact that towards the last two decades of the twentieth century research emerged glorifying human resources as the source of organizational excellence. Consequently, being motivated by the fact that good people management strategies lead to excellent organizational performance, attention in this study focused on people management strategies in local government in Zimbabwe. The study adopted a mixed approach with a strong inclination towards qualitative methodology. The data was gleaned from documents from local authorities, interviews, focus group interviews and questionnaire surveys. The study focused on local authorities in Manicaland Province. The results of the study confirmed the existence of human resource management strategies in local authorities in Manicaland, Zimbabwe. The human resource management strategies have however not resulted in excellent performance of local authorities. The reason behind this is attributable to severe resource constraints. Excellent people management strategies were found to be on paper as there were no resources to support them. The dearth of resources in local authorities was found to be attributed to the economic, political, legal and social factors engulfing the local government system in Zimbabwe. Consequently, local government in Zimbabwe remain stressed and in dire need of a ―Lazarus moment‖. There is an engineer with skills to construct dams to quench the thirst souls in the city but there are no resources to construct the dams. The fireman‘s truck rushes to quench a fire outbreak only to arrive at the scene with no water. In view of this, the study recommends that the review of the local government legal framework be speeded up and more autonomy be granted to local authorities. Such a review would have a bearing on the notion of decentralization, democratization and consequently economic development. In addition, government must seriously consider setting aside a portion of its budget towards support of local authorities. v Where democratic ethos exists, there is transparency, accountability, the rule of law and responsiveness. The human resource in local government would in turn promote democracy and excellence. Other strategies such as granting of garnishing powers to local authorities as well as giving their police arresting would further nourish their resource base. When this happen people management strategies would contribute to effective local government systems in Zimbabwe. This was notwithstanding the fact that towards the last two decades of the twentieth century research emerged glorifying human resources as the source of organizational excellence. Consequently, being motivated by the fact that good people management strategies lead to excellent organizational performance, attention in this study focused on people management strategies in local government in Zimbabwe. The study adopted a mixed approach with a strong inclination towards qualitative methodology. The data was gleaned from documents from local authorities, interviews, focus group interviews and questionnaire surveys. The study focused on local authorities in Manicaland Province. The results of the study confirmed the existence of human resource management strategies in local authorities in Manicaland, Zimbabwe. The human resource management strategies have however not resulted in excellent performance of local authorities. The reason behind this is attributable to severe resource constraints. Excellent people management strategies were found to be on paper as there were no resources to support them. The dearth of resources in local authorities was found to be attributed to the economic, political, legal and social factors engulfing the local government system in Zimbabwe. Consequently, local government in Zimbabwe remain stressed and in dire need of a ―Lazarus moment‖. There is an engineer with skills to construct dams to quench the thirst souls in the city but there are no resources to construct the dams. The fireman‘s truck rushes to quench a fire outbreak only to arrive at the scene with no water. In view of this, the study recommends that the review of the local government legal framework be speeded up and more autonomy be granted to local authorities. Such a review would have a bearing on the notion of decentralization, democratization and consequently economic development. In addition, government must seriously consider setting aside a portion of its budget towards support of local authorities. v Where democratic ethos exists, there is transparency, accountability, the rule of law and responsiveness. The human resource in local government would in turn promote democracy and excellence. Other strategies such as granting of garnishing powers to local authorities as well as giving their police arresting would further nourish their resource base. When this happen people management strategies would contribute to effective local government systems in Zimbabwe. Further studies on the contribution of human resource management strategies in effective local government systems after the complete overhaul of the current legislative regime would nonetheless be of interest to researchers. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Management and Commerce, 2015
