- Description: The concept of cultural landscapes relates to the multifaceted links between people, place and identity. From a professional perspective, the concept refers to a category of designated conservation areas with specific biocultural heritage values. From a local perspective, it may refer to a landscape that is associated with the provision of a culturally-specific sense of identity and belonging. We explore these two perspectives through a comparative analysis of three cultural landscapes in South Africa, the ‘expert’ designated Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape and the Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape, and the local associative landscape of emaXhoseni, which is not formally recognised. We propose that a biocultural diversity perspective of heritage not only recognises the inextricable relationship between nature and culture, but it also gives prominence to the beliefs, values and practices of local people, and to strengthening their agency to safeguard their heritage in ways and forms that are relevant to them.

However, how can the ideals of stewardship be realised in practice? The links between the theory and practice of stewardship are under-developed, and research to support place-based stewardship practice is limited. We therefore bring together complementary perspectives to guide research on place-based stewardship practice in the context of multifunctional landscapes. We unpack and synthesise literature on stewardship, landscapes, and collaboration for natural resource management, and highlight the ways in which the pathways approach can deepen research on collaboration and stewardship practice. We propose landscapes as a suitable level of analysis and action for stewardship. Since all landscapes are multifunctional, we argue that collaboration among multiple stakeholders is a necessary focus of such research. Our analysis reveals that existing theory on collaboration could be deepened by further research into the agency of individual human actors, the complex social–relational dynamics among actors, and the situatedness of actors within the social–ecological context. These factors mediate collaborative processes, and a better understanding of them is needed to support place-based stewardship practice. To this end, the pathways approach offers a waymark to advance research on collaboration, particularly in the complex, contested social–ecological systems that tend to characterize multifunctional landscapes.

- Description: Temporal and spatial fluctuations in the abundance of oceanic pelagic populations spread geographically around the globe are common (Cushing 1975). The causes of these fluctuations may be exogenous (environmental or anthropogenic) or endogenous to the organism (e.g. ontogenetic drivers) (Ricker 1954). This scenario applies to some tuna stocks, including the skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus, 1758), known as bonito-listrado in Brazil, katunkel, or ocean bonito in South Africa, and godhaa (bigger) or kadumas (smaller) skipjack in the Maldives. The skipjack belongs to the family Scombridae and inhabits tropical and subtropical areas of the globe. On average, 85% of skipjack catch occurs in waters warmer than 24°C (Fonteneau 2003). This resource is of particular importance, accounting for 57% of the global industrial tuna catch in 2016, and is mainly processed by the canning industry. Skipjack catches totaled 2.79 million t in 2016 (ISSF 2018), and currently 8.5% of worldwide catches are made by the pole-and line fleet. In Brazil and the Maldives, the resource is well-known. Catches in Brazil were seen to increase until 2014, while in the Maldives, 2006 marked the beginning of a strong and unsettling decline that continued until recent years. Off South Africa, skipjack catches are 1000 to 10000 times lower than those from Brazil and the Maldives, and the highest catches were recorded in 2012.

There is an insufficient understanding of the natural resources contribution to the resilience of poor urban communities living in informal settlements and the financial implications thereof. Thus, household strategies used to recover from the October 2012 flood shock were investigated within the informal settlements of three small South African towns using questionnaires. Within the vulnerability paradigm and the sustainable livelihood framework, the study also quantified and evaluated the relative contribution of natural resources to recovery strategies and the impacts on household financial capital. We found that natural resources contributed up to 70% to recovery of households from the flood shock, most of this being to reconstruct housing structures after the flood. Factors such as household head education level, household income, kinship level, the extent of property damage and the cost associated with property rehabilitation significantly influenced the uptake of natural resources in recovery from floods, and this was variable among settlements and towns. The main findings showed that natural resources reduced household vulnerability of urban informal settlements by providing an emergency-net function that substitutes financial capital. Their inclusion in disaster management plans and responses has the potential to contribute to the sustainable livelihoods of the urban poor in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

- Description: In this paper, I investigate some of the reasons for the relative paucity of scholarly attention given to Niq Mhlongo’s debut novel, Dog Eat Dog. I argue that this text anticipates and articulates themes that are vital to contemporary South African culture generally, and to the academic space of the university specifically. For this reason, I contend that it is a work worthy of consideration, both because of its unusual form (it is a novel of ordeal rather than a Bildungsroman), and its prescient depiction of issues to do with institutional racism and academic exclusion – subjects which were central during the student-led protests on South African campuses in 2015 and 2016. A principal thesis of this article is that one of the reasons for literary study’s unwillingness to engage with the novel is the discipline’s predisposition to a hermeneutics of suspicion, a method of analysis that I show is unsuited to Mhlongo’s text. Instead, I argue for the use of surface reading as a valid and appropriate praxis given the form and the content of Dog Eat Dog.

Thermoluminescence of annealed synthetic quartz: the influence of annealing on kinetic parameters and thermal quenching

- Description: The thermoluminescence of synthetic quartz annealed at various temperatures up to 900 °C is reported. Glow curves measured at 1 oCs−1 following beta irradiation to 40 Gy from a sample annealed at 500 °C and from an unannealed one consist of a prominent peak at 70 °C and secondary peaks at 110, 180 and 310 °C. In comparison, the glow peak from the sample annealed at 900 °C consists of three peaks but with the main peak at 86 °C and other lower intensity peaks at 170 and 310 °C. Kinetic analysis was carried out on the main peak only in each case. The order of kinetics of this peak was determined to be first order using various methods. The activation energy was evaluated as an average of 0.90±0.02eV for the unannealed sample and the one annealed at 500 °C. However, when the synthetic quartz is annealed at 900 °C, the activation energy decreases to 0.65±0.02eV. The main point of interest however concerns thermal quenching. It was noted that for the sample annealed at 500 °C as well as the unannealed one, the maximum intensity of the main peak decreases with heating rate. This phenomenon is associated with thermal quenching. When the same experiment is carried out using quartz annealed at 900 °C and irradiated to the same dose, namely 40 Gy, the intensity increases with heating rate. This would imply that this sample is not affected by thermal quenching. Using the notion that the radiative and non-radiative recombination routes are competitive, we repeated the experiment using a low dose of 3 Gy. In this case, the intensity decreased with heating rate showing that the process can be tuned. The activation energy for thermal quenching for the samples annealed at 900 °C, 500 °C and unnannealed one was found as 0.65±0.02eV, 0.82±0.02eV and 0.95±0.06eV. Evidently, annealing affects recombination processes in synthetic quartz.

The activation energy was evaluated as an average of 0.90±0.02eV for the unannealed sample and the one annealed at 500 °C. However, when the synthetic quartz is annealed at 900 °C, the activation energy decreases to 0.65±0.02eV. The main point of interest however concerns thermal quenching. It was noted that for the sample annealed at 500 °C as well as the unannealed one, the maximum intensity of the main peak decreases with heating rate. This phenomenon is associated with thermal quenching. When the same experiment is carried out using quartz annealed at 900 °C and irradiated to the same dose, namely 40 Gy, the intensity increases with heating rate. This would imply that this sample is not affected by thermal quenching. Using the notion that the radiative and non-radiative recombination routes are competitive, we repeated the experiment using a low dose of 3 Gy. In this case, the intensity decreased with heating rate showing that the process can be tuned. The activation energy for thermal quenching for the samples annealed at 900 °C, 500 °C and unnannealed one was found as 0.65±0.02eV, 0.82±0.02eV and 0.95±0.06eV. Evidently, annealing affects recombination processes in synthetic quartz.

The superior activity of 3-AuNR is attributed to the photothermal therapy effect since nanorods absorb more light at 680 nm than nanospheres.

Understanding the connections between the actors comprising governance systems and influences between governance and the environment is therefore critical to support successful transitions to novel forms of governance required to deal with environmental changes. The paper provides an analytical framework with a practical example from Vanuatu, for mapping and assessment of the governance system providing for management of coral reef fish resources. The framework enables a rapid analysis of governance systems to identify factors that can encourage, or hinder, the adaptation of communities to changes in abundance or availability of marine resources.

- Description: Metabolism quantifies the energy-consuming activities of an organism (Nelson 2016) and is used as an indication of how organisms partition energy resources to activities that allow them to survive, grow and reproduce (Post and Lee 1996). The metabolic profile, which is a composition of the various metabolic rates of an individual, therefore gives an indication of the efficiency of energy transformation and allocation (Fry 1971; Brown et al. 2004). McKenzie et al. (2016) suggested that an organism’s physiology contributes towards its ability to survive under specific environmental conditions. As a result, physiological condition can be a reflection of the performance and fitness of an organism (Pörtner 2010). When combined with information on changing environmental conditions, physiological information can provide insight into species- and community-level responses (Pörtner and Farrell 2008). These kinds of data have served numerous ecological applications, including resource management, conservation (McKenzie et al. 2016) and climate-change assessments (Pörtner and Farrell 2008).

- Description: Metabolism quantifies the energy-consuming activities of an organism (Nelson 2016) and is used as an indication of how organisms partition energy resources to activities that allow them to survive, grow and reproduce (Post and Lee 1996). The metabolic profile, which is a composition of the various metabolic rates of an individual, therefore gives an indication of the efficiency of energy transformation and allocation (Fry 1971; Brown et al. 2004). McKenzie et al. (2016) suggested that an organism’s physiology contributes towards its ability to survive under specific environmental conditions. As a result, physiological condition can be a reflection of the performance and fitness of an organism (Pörtner 2010). When combined with information on changing environmental conditions, physiological information can provide insight into species- and community-level responses (Pörtner and Farrell 2008). These kinds of data have served numerous ecological applications, including resource management, conservation (McKenzie et al. 2016) and climate-change assessments (Pörtner and Farrell 2008).

- Description: Based on poor performance of students in the higher education science context, this paper questions the current focus on content knowledge and, in so doing, examines the role student knowers play in enabling epistemological access. Using Legitimation Code Theory, and drawing on data from interviews, course documents, observations, and critical reflections, the social relations of a science foundation course in the South African context are examined empirically to reveal the valuing of two kinds of knowers—learning-context knowers (or science learners) and production-context knowers (or scientists). Since being both kinds of knowers is necessary for access to powerful science knowledge, and home and educational contexts of certain groups of students are better in terms of enabling science knowers and learners than others, it is argued from a social justice perspective that science (and other) curricula account for knower attributes in enabling access for success for all students.

Influence of annealing on thermoluminescence of natural quartz: kinetic analysis and experimental study of apparent inverse thermal quenching

- Description: The influence of annealing on the main thermoluminescence glow-peak of natural quartz is reported. For comparison, results from un-annealed quartz are included. The glow-curve measured at 1 °Cs−1 after beta irradiation to 50 Gy revealed six peaks each for quartz annealed at 800 °C for 1 h and the un-annealed sample. The main peak in both quartzes was observed at 72 °C. This report focusses on kinetic analysis of the main peak. The analysis was carried out using various methods consisting of the initial rise, whole glow-peak, peak shape, variable heating rate and phosphorescence-based methods. The activation energy obtained using the various methods ranges between and for the annealed sample and between and for the un-annealed sample. The result suggests that annealing has little effect on the activation energy. The luminescence intensity decreased with heating rate in the un-annealed sample in a manner suggestive of thermal quenching. In contrast, the dependence of intensity on heating rate in the annealed sample is influenced by the dose the sample is irradiated to. Whereas thermal quenching was noted for a dose of 50 Gy in the un-annealed sample, the annealed sample showed evidence of thermal quenching at a low dose of 3 Gy with the opposite effect when irradiated to 50 Gy. The activation energies of thermal quenching were found as and for the un-annealed and annealed samples respectively. We ascribe the apparent dependence of thermal quenching on dose in the annealed sample to competition between radiative and non-radiative transitions at the recombination centre.
