In terms of Cummins's (1984) constructs of Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skill (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP), learners' written competencies in all three languages (most strongly in isiXhosa) are conversational (BICS). The personal expressive texts which predominate in learners' writing have done little to develop a formal, impersonal academic register (CALP). Yet learners need to become familiar with the more abstract impersonal factual genres associated with disciplinary-based knowledge, as Grade 7 is the start of the senior phase of schooling. It is vital that learners achieve grade-level competence in national learning outcome five which states that 'the learner will be able to use language to think and reason, as well as access, process and use information for learning' (DoE 2002).

Economic resources, gender norms and partnerships, and the undesirability of the pregnancy meant the pregnancy was unsupportable at micro- and macro-levels, and sometimes despite parenting being desired by the women. A supportability framework offers opportunities to understand reproductive decision-making as imbricated in the circumstances of the pregnancy which render it (un)supportable, therefore opening up or closing down particular decisions. The immediate institutional argument is for the creation of modestly equipped and staffed Language Development Centres easily accessible to the speech communities responsible for the maintenance and development of their languages, particularly the nine official PMLs (Previously Marginalised Languages), but also the dialects. The paper sets out to suggest why such centres may be necessary if we are serious about creating conditions in which the PMLs can be successfully developed without thoughtlessly damaging South Africa's linguistic diversity.

- Description: Background: Motivation is critical to health worker performance and work quality. In Bihar, India, frontline health workers provide essential health services for the state’s poorest citizens. Yet, there is a shortfall of motivated and skilled providers and a lack of coordination between two cadres of frontline health workers and their supervisors. CARE India developed an approach aimed at improving health workers’ performance by shifting work culture and strengthening teamwork and motivation. The intervention—“Team-Based Goals and Incentives”—supported health workers to work as teams towards collective goals and rewarded success with public recognition and non-financial incentives. Methods: Thirty months after initiating the intervention, 885 health workers and 98 supervisors completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire in 38 intervention and 38 control health sub-centers in one district. The questionnaire included measures of social cohesion, teamwork attitudes, self-efficacy, job satisfaction, teamwork behaviors, equitable service delivery, taking initiative, and supervisory support. We conducted bivariate analyses to examine the impact of the intervention on these psychosocial and behavioral outcomes. Results: Results show statistically significant differences across several measures between intervention and control frontline health workers, including improved teamwork (mean = 8.8 vs. 7.3), empowerment (8.5 vs. 7.4), job satisfaction (7.1 vs. 5.99) and equitable service delivery (6.7 vs. 4.99). While fewer significant differences were found for supervisors, they reported improved teamwork (8.4 vs. 5.3), and frontline health workers reported improved fulfillment of supervisory duties by their supervisors (8.9 vs. 7.6). Both frontline health workers and supervisors found public recognition and enhanced teamwork more motivating than the non-financial incentives. Conclusions: The Team-Based Goals and Incentives model reinforces intrinsic motivation and supports improvements in the teamwork, motivation, and performance of health workers. It offers an approach to practitioners and governments for improving the work environment in a resource-constrained setting and where there are multiple cadres of health workers.

- Description: The Oprah Winfrey Show is widely recognised as the leading television talk show worldwide (Garson, 2004) and its appeal lies in its exploration of issues which have universal currency, such as relationship problems, gender-based violence and stories of survival. The Oprah Winfrey Show exploits the television talk show as a forum for public therapy where ordinary people and celebrities alike divulge their problems, successes and the intimate details of their private lives (Marshall, n.d.). In an attempt to understand how Winfrey has blurred the boundaries between public and private to create a modern-day public confessional, this paper explores a recurring theme on the show, the theme of suffering as it is exemplified in discourses used by guests, by Winfrey herself and by viewers. The study uses the APPRAISAL system (Martin and Rose, 2003) to analyse how the attitudinal language of the talk show constructs an identifiable victim whose narrative centres on overcoming suffering. The analysis reveals that expressions of Affect, Judgement and Appreciation are powerful mechanisms for legitimising the identity of the suffering victim. This paper argues that The Oprah Winfrey Show capitalises on the universality of suffering to promote therapeutic self-help for everyone, both 'suffering victims' (the guests on the talk show) and 'potential victims' (the viewers).

To explore the potential for measuring the link between informal employment and poverty reduction, the chapter presents the results of a poverty decomposition analysis using household survey data from South Africa. The findings suggest that a focus on low earnings in the informal economy belies the important contribution of this income to keeping workers and their households above the poverty line. The chapter concludes by considering whether or how policies might look different when they recognise and support the role of earnings from informal employment in the households of the working poor.
