Retrospective analysis of factors contributing to parasuicide among youth in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: Parasuicide is a problem that affects the youth locally and globally. Parasuicide has negative psychological impacts on youth. This study was designed to assess elements of parasuicide in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality of South Africa, using records of patients admitted to Frere and Cecilia Makiwane hospitals between 2016 and 2020. The purpose of the study was to conduct a descriptive retrospective review of parasuicide among youth to determine trends, causes, and contributing factors of committing parasuicide. Methods A retrospective, quantitative and descriptive study was conducted with 200 files of patients aged between 18 and 35 years conveniently sampled. These patients diagnosed as committed parasuicide and were admitted at Frere and Cecilia Makiwane hospitals over a period of four years from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 202. Only record files of patients’ residing in East London and Mdantsane catchment area were selected. Raw data was collected for a period of twelve weeks using a developed data collection tool developed in Ms Excel spreadsheet. Results In this sample, the large number of the patients were under 26 years (60.5%), female (57%), single (92.5%), and Black (99.5%). Furthermore, majority of the patients had attained secondary education (89.5%), were unemployed (83%) and living with their families (59%). There were different methods and agents used by participants to commit parasuicide and reasons differed from person to person. Among patients who reported a suicide attempt, organophosphates were most commonly used agent for self-poisoning (47%, n=94), followed by substances such as use of drugs and alcohol (n=57, 28.5%), violence (n=27, 13.5%), corrosive agents including bleach and Jik (n=11, 5.5%), and hydrogen peroxide including acidic sub-stances like battery acid (n=11, 5.5%). The common reason found in the study and indicates participants had psychiatric disorder (34.5%). Conclusion Limiting access to organophosphate agents and other lethal means is an effective strategy that should be adopted to prevent parasuicide among youth. Timely identification of risks or warning signs, social prevention and immediate intervention at the state level will play an important role in controlling parasuicide among youth. Moreover, improving health care services with psychotherapy support would empower youth with skills that would enhance their self-confidence, self-worth and resilience. - Description: Successful development projects are not only grounded in proper planning and implementation but also in evaluation. Numerous development projects are implemented successfully but lack evaluation. This study evaluates the Joint Action Project (JAP) waste intervention that took place in Gqeberha Township in February 2020. The intervention was designed and implemented by a group of student volunteers from Nelson Mandela University (NMU), Port Elizabeth (PE) College and Wismar University. This was a collaborative project between Development Studies, Human Settlements Development, Electrical Engineering, Communication and Design as well as Architecture students who worked together to construct a workspace for a male informal waste picker residing in Gqeberha township. The study adopted a qualitative research approach and data was collected through interviews and field observation. Although the findings of this study revealed that there were some challenges encountered by the beneficiary and the JAP team during the project implementation, the benefits of the intervention exceeded these challenges. Using information visualization to support the self-management of type 2 diabetes mellitus

- Description: The globally increasing number of individuals suffering from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), a completely preventable incurable disease of the pancreas, highlights the need for an effective tool for users to understand the relationship between their behaviours and the effect that those behaviours can have on their blood glucose levels (BGLs). There are few Information Visualisation (IV) tools available that can be used to reduce the cognition required to understand correlations between behaviour and BGLs. Existing tools require time-consuming, lengthy inputs and provide simple visualisations that do not show correlations. This leads to ineffective self-management of T2DM. Information Visualisation (IV) techniques can be used to support effective self-management of T2DM and reduce the cognition required to interpret DM data. Suitable IV techniques were identified and used to visualize T2DM data to aid in the self-management of the disease. Temporal charts, i.e. The Bar, Pie and Line Chart as well as heat maps, were selected as the most appropriate IV techniques to visualize T2DM data as they support time-series data well. A prototype, MedicMetric was created as an IV tool for visualizing T2DM data. MedicMetric incorporated three designed charts, namely the Change Rate Line View, the Radial Progress View, and the Annotated Line View. The Change Rate Line View and Annotated Line View both used line IV techniques, while the Radial Progress View made use of the bar IV technique. The Change Rate Line View performed the worst overall. A usability evaluation was conducted to compare these techniques and to determine which technique is most suitable for visualizing T2DM data. The results leaned significantly in favour of the Annotated Line View. This view is most similar to the line charts typically used in other IV tools. For this reason, the MedicMetric app was briefly compared to the MySygr and Diabetes:M application. In effectiveness and efficiency, MedicMetric and MySugr obtained almost identical results. However, participants indicated that MedicMetric supported their tasks using the Visual Information Seeking Mantra (VISM) the best overall, with 100% of participants stating that they would prefer to use the MedicMetric application. Several usability problems were identified with the IV techniques and they were addressed shortly after the study was complete. Refining predator-prey preference at the prey demographic level for cheetah and lion

- Description: Traditional prey preference models estimate prey preference using a coarse species-specific body mass of three-quarters of the mean adult female body mass. This is widely assumed to estimate the average mass across prey populations, accounting for neonates, juveniles, sub-adults, and adults. However, this approach negates the models’ ability to predict demography-specific prey preferences, thus reducing our ability to predict the impacts of predation on prey populations. The objectives of this study were to 1) refine the prey selection models, using lion Panthera leo and cheetah Acinonyx jubatus as model species, by incorporating prey demographic classes and season and, 2) determine the influence of seasonal variability in availability of these prey demographic classes on cheetah reproduction. Lions preferentially killed adults of larger species (e.g., wildebeest, waterbuck, and zebra) irrespective of the season, as predicted by optimal foraging theory. Sub-adult, juvenile, and neonate prey were killed by lions relative to their abundance. Cheetahs preferred juvenile prey of large species, namely kudu, zebra, and wildebeest. Season influenced cheetah preference with neonates and juveniles being preferred during the wet season and adults of smaller species, and juveniles of larger species being preferred during the dry season. Thus, results support the alternative demographic class hypothesis. Furthermore, the availability of neonate and juvenile prey drives cheetah reproduction patterns with conception and cub independence coinciding with the peak availability of easy-to-catch neonates. Lactation coincided with the high availability of relatively larger juveniles to ensure that females obtain enough resources to sustain the most energetically costly reproductive phase. In addition, I suggest cheetah may be particularly vulnerable to disturbances that impact on prey reproduction (e.g., drought, fire, and flood), given their reliance on neonate and juvenile prey. My findings highlight that estimating species-level prey preference using a coarse species-specific body mass masks the level of prey use and potential preferences for the different prey demographic classes. The use of some prey species may be largely confined to juveniles by smaller predators, meaning that prey availability would vary seasonally, may influence reproductive patterns, and carrying capacity models would need to be revised in terms of the available demographic-specific prey biomass. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Sciences, School of Environmental Sciences, 2022

The effects of foreign direct investment on economic growth and human capital in vista countries

- Description: The study examines the effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on economic growth and human capital in VISTA countries using time series and panel data analysis for the period 1990 to 2017. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound approach was applied in this study to examine the long-term relationships. The findings posited that there is a long-run relationship between economic growth, FDI, trade openness, capital formation, primary school enrolment, inflation over the period 1990 to 2017. The investigation of the long run and short run estimates results between FDI and economic growth indicated that FDI exhibited a positive effect on economic growth in Indonesia, while in Vietnam, South Africa, Turkey, and Argentina a negative relationship was established. Moreover, the findings of the panel data analysis showed that VISTA countries have been actively promoting policies and strategies that attract FDI to enhance economic growth. The study further incorporated the human capital results which indicated that FDI has a positive long-run relationship on human capital except for South Africa and Turkey. In the long run the results suggest that FDI has a negative effect on human capital only in Vietnam and Indonesia. Whereas, in the short run the results suggest that FDI has a negative effect on human capital only in Vietnam. The findings of the panel regression model carried out demonstrated that FDI exerts a positive and significant effect on human capital. It is evident that VISTA countries have made efforts to reform over the years, however, the spill over benefits of FDI are different from one country to another. - Description: In the South African context, co-operatives are mostly established to ease the impact of unemployment and poverty, particularly in rural communities. The Kruisfontein Cattle Farming Co-operative is no different, as it was formed by a group of farmers who were looking into converting their herd from that of a poor genetic quality, low-value breed to a superior quality breed. These farmers were all facing similar challenges prior to forming the co-operative and they hoped that through working together they would be able to overcome some of the challenges they faced and thus become a successful co-operative that can compete with established farmers. The Jeffery’s Bay Wind Farm carried a mandate from the Department of Energy, through the REIPPP, to ensure that a portion of its profits is redirected to assist communities that are within a 50km radius of the JBWF. The Kruisfontein Cattle Farming Co-operative became part of the programme and the JBWF’s project manager became the person responsible for the smooth running of the programme. However, research conducted in this field has revealed that in most cases project managers in the renewable energy sector encounter challenges when implementing community development initiatives and they may lack an in-depth understanding of what community or social development entails, as it might not necessarily be an area of expertise for them. Therefore, this study aimed to explore how the Kruisfontein Cattle Farming Co-operative has influenced the livelihoods of the beneficiaries. The theories that were adopted and deemed applicable to this study included the traditional modernisation theory, dependency theory and sustainable development. The study employed a qualitative approach and a case study research design. The study made use of primary data collected through semi-structured interviews and documents, and an interview schedule was employed to carry out the interviews. In terms of sampling, the researcher made use of convenience sampling, which is a form of non-probability sampling. All the members of the Kruisfontein Cattle Farming Co-operative, which was the entire population of the study, were interviewed, thus making the sample type a census. The study explored how the Kruisfontein Cattle Farming Co-operative has influenced the livelihoods of the beneficiaries and revealed that since the involvement of the JBWF, the co-operative has recorded several achievements such as fencing around the grazing land and cattle kraal as well as calves of a superior breed that will enable the beneficiaries to receive good prices when selling their cattle. However, the co-operative is faced with challenges associated with weak livelihood assets, as the asset pentagon illustrated that the beneficiaries have moderate access to physical, human and social capital, while their natural capital is low, and their financial capital is significantly low. An overreliance on nature-based activities as a livelihood strategy is also a challenge facing the co-operative. Lastly, notwithstanding the abovementioned challenges, it can be concluded that the Kruisfontein Cattle Farming Co-operative has had a positive influence on the livelihoods of the beneficiaries, as they indicated that they experienced reduced vulnerability through the fenced grazing land and anticipated an improvement in their financial capital status through the increased income they would receive from selling cattle of a superior breed. , Thesis (MADS) -- Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, 2021

- Description: Over the past decades there has been a drastic decline in our ocean’s health that has resulted in fish depletion as well as marine life endangerment. This is largely due to human and economic activities such as commercial fishing, ship to ship bunkering and dumping of waste material at sea. The lack of governance and law enforcement has been a catalyst to the ocean’s fast approaching death. Although many laws and legislation exist to direct and encourage appropriate behaviour to preserve the ocean and marine life as well as ensure equality and equal access, the follow through and adherence have been lacking. This study was guided by the aim to develop a strategy for the implementation of a corporate governance framework to enhance compliance to environmental legislation in Algoa Bay to better protect the ocean, marine life and the rich biodiversity in the region which in extension will be beneficial to society and the oceans economy, as a thriving ocean is good for fishing, investments, imports, exports and tourism which is crucial for a booming oceans economy. The methodology applied in this research is a qualitative approach that used semi- structured interviews targeted at owners and managers of organisations to extract data regarding the level of compliance by those operating in the Algoa Bay region to marine and environmental legislation to decipher where decision making leaned and if it was slanted more towards non-compliance. The findings of the study demonstrate that organisations are not fully compliant to marine and environmental legislation despite being environmentally aware and portraying themselves as such to the public. This has been largely due to poor law enforcement practices and organisations valuing profit over compliance. As a result, African Penguins and many other fish species have become endangered. Effect of grazing systems and age on enteric methane production and performance plus grazing system effect on ruminal fermentation parameters of Nguni and Bonsmara beef cows

- Description: Beef breeds of cattle are predominantly raised through extensive grazing and produce the highest levels of enteric methane (CH4) through ruminal fermentation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of breed, grazing, and age on enteric methane production and performance of beef cows as well as effect of breed and grazing system on ruminal fermentation parameters. Two separate studies were conducted; the first study evaluated the effect of grazing system, breed, and age on ruminal enteric methane production and performance of selected beef breeds. The second study evaluated the effect of the grazing system and breed on ruminal fermentation. In the first study, two breeds (Nguni and Bonsmara) raised under two grazing systems (communal and commercial) in a random complete block design were grouped into 3 age categories. Eighty-four cows aged between 24-120 months were randomly selected and grouped by age: group A (young adult cow, n = 7, 24-48 months old), group B (adult, n = 7, 60-80 months old), and group C (old adult, n = 7, 90-120 months) in either grazing system. Data were collected on methane production per day, body condition, and weight used to estimate dry matter intake (DMI), methane per DMI, and methane per body weight. In the second study, 40 cows of the same age group, parity, and physiological status were used. Ten cows per breed (Bonsmara and Nguni) in either grazing system (communal and commercial) were used in a random complete block design. Rumen fluid collection was done by the stomach tube method. Data were collected on ruminal ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N), pH, Temperature, volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Older animals produced higher methane per head in the order of C > B > A; (P<0.0001). Performance parameters like Body condition score (BCS), body weight (BW), dry matter intake (DMI), and daily methane were higher (P<0.05) in Bonsmara. However, Methane per BW was higher in Nguni (P<0.05), and methane per DMI did not differ among breeds (P>0.05). Body condition, BW, and DMI were higher (P<0.05) in commercial grazing system. Contrary, daily methane production, methane production per DMI, and methane produced per BW were higher in communal grazing. In the second study, Ruminal NH3-N concentration ranged between 69.05 - 96.78 mg/L and was higher (P<0.05) in Nguni. It was also higher (P<0.05) in the commercial grazing system. Ruminal pH, temperature, total VFAs, and certain individual VFAs (iso-butyrate, valeric and iso-valeric) did not differ (P>0.05) among breeds and grazing systems. However, total VFAs were slightly lower in communal grazing (78.87 mmol/L) than commercial grazing (89.80 mmol/L). Acetate, propionate, butyrate proportions, and acetate to propionate ratio did not differ (P>0.05) among breeds but differed (P<0.05) between grazing systems. Acetate (P<0.05) and acetate to propionate ratio (P<0.05) were higher in the communal grazing system, while the reverse was true for propionate (P<0.05) and butyrate (P<0.05). Bonsmara produced more methane than Nguni under similar conditions, with Nguni uniquely producing more methane per BW, indicating host genetics influence. Communal animals and older animals produced more CH4 than commercial and younger cows regardless of the breed, indicating ruminal inefficiencies in very old cows. These results emphasize the idea that host genetics or breed, grazing system, and age influence methane output and performance. - Description: The concept of a Smart City has evolved over the last three decades and has attracted the increasing interest of the scientific research community. Unfortunately, many Smart City projects and initiatives do not provide the value expected by all the stakeholders. Many of the reasons for this relate to a lack of data management, data integration, data access and stakeholder participation. People are an integral part of any city’s ecosystem, and the Smart City concept was introduced to address the challenges of an ever-growing global population leading to the risk of depletion of economic, environmental and social resources. The problem addressed in this study is based on the challenges preventing the creation of the value of smart cities or stakeholders. Limited research has been published on the status of Smart City initiatives or on the impact of various success factors on the potential value creation for stakeholders including citizens. Studies on initiatives in developing countries, such as South Africa are even less. Whilst some challenges and constraints related to smart cities in Africa have been reported, there are no studies reporting on initiatives across the data value chain that consider all types of stakeholders, nor the impact of these initiatives. This study addressed this gap in research and designed a theoretical Value Alignment Smart City Stakeholder (VASCS) Model based on a Systematic Literature Review and a review of related theories. The model has important components that should form part of any Smart City project or Smart City initiative. These five main components are: 1) nine Smart City dimensions with related success factors; 2) four stakeholder roles (enablers, providers, utilisers and users); 3) the data value chain; and 4) the five phases of stakeholder benefits/value realisation that can be linked to; 5) stakeholder value alignment. This study applied the VASCS Model to Smart City initiatives in two case studies in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, which were the Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City to investigate and understand the status of such initiatives and the alignment of value thereof. The stakeholder interviews were conducted in two rounds with various stakeholders of Smart City initiatives, referred to as cases in the two case studies. An expert review of the VASCS Model was conducted with eight experts in the field of Information Systems and Smart Cities. The findings of this review served to confirm the components of the model, with only minor improvements recommended. It was confirmed that all of the components need to be considered in planning Smart City projects. The first round consisted of six interviews with enablers and providers and the second round consisted of 22 interviews with users, utilisers and citizens. The interviews investigated the value and impact experienced by stakeholders of these initiatives, with a particular focus on the users, utilisers and citizens of the cases. The interview data was transcribed and qualitatively analysed by using Atlas.tiand Excel. The data was analysed according to the Technological, Organisational and Environmental theory constructs and other identified themes. The interview analysis findings revealed several drivers for these initiatives, which were primarily cost reduction, integration and quality assurance. The results also highlighted access to resources, such as technical skills as a challenge. Another challenge identified was connectivity related to access to data and the digital and physical divide that can impact decision making. The main benefits of Smart City initiatives highlighted were the provision of infrastructure, education and training and digitalisation. The theoretical contribution of this study is the VASCS Model, which can assist other researchers and practitioners with knowledge of the factors, drivers, challenges and value obtained in Smart City initiatives. The model has two supplementary components: A Stakeholder Classification Model and a Smart City Success Factor Evaluation Template. The practical contribution of this study is the potential use of the VASCS Model by practitioners, city management, researchers and other stakeholders, who can use the model, with the related model and template for planning and evaluating Smart City initiatives. The model can be used to classify the digital activities according to a Smart City’s success factors while evaluating the value created by these activities. The impact of these initiatives can then be assessed through value realisation and alignment for stakeholders. The scientific contribution is the adoption of the model to the cases in the Eastern Cape. - Description: The global energy transition slowed in 2019 according to the Energy Transition Index report from World Economic Forum, and South Africa (SA) was ranked one hundred and fourteenth out of the one hundred and fifteen countries assessed South Africa thus demonstrated low results in both the energy system performance index and the readiness for energy transition. A range of countries are also facing challenges that are central to the transformation of the energy sector, including protecting the environment, energy security and climate change. These persistent global crises and problems experienced by the energy sector in relation also to scarcity of natural resources, widening social inequalities and environmental degradation, have necessitated reforms and transitions in the energy sector. This study follows an interpretivism research philosophy because it is more suitable for a qualitative research methodology. The strategy of case study research is related to the paradigm of interpretivism approach and thus to the methodology of qualitative research. Various research strategies are used to gain in-depth knowledge, including the use of a case study research methodology to investigate a particular natural setting phenomenon. The research methodology with the embedded sub-units of analysis uses a single case study instrument. The primary unit of analysis considered for this study is the energy sector in South Africa in its current state. For this study, semi-structured interviews are utilised as the research instrument forming the primary data. Transition management and research propositions as conceptualised in this case study are theoretical concepts that management could use to positively influence the South African energy transition. SA is seriously impacted by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning of 2020. The online research approach used resulted in some limitations during data collection, not being able to conduct interviews face-to-face and inability to observe participants during data collection. The researcher also found limitations on accessing data from some of the energy experts recruited to participate in the research. Some reported being busy and not having time to fill out the questionnaires. The researcher carried out follow-ups and recruited new participants. Primary data was ultimately collected from a total of five energy experts who participated in the study against the initial plan for eight participants. Most energy transition studies have focused almost entirely on energy technologies choices. - Description: Floodplain wetlands are important components of river systems that provide various ecosystem services such as sediment buffering. These wide and often expansive storage areas have a substantial impact on downstream water quality by trapping sediment and storing ‘contaminants’ adhered to sediment thus improving water quality. The planned construction of the Ntabelanga and Lalini Dams in the Tsitsa River Catchment has been proposed; however, due to the steep landscapes and erodible soils, this promotes high erosion rates that can potentially reduce the lifespan of the proposed dams. The existing wetlands in the Tsitsa River Catchment have therefore been identified as key sediment buffers that can reduce sediment transport, but the effectiveness of these buffers is poorly researched. This study attempts to investigate the current sediment buffering function of the Gatberg Floodplain Wetland over one wet season (August 2019 to August 2020). Time integrated samplers were installed above and below the wetland to determine relative sediment volume and character coming in and out of the wetland. Five transects were surveyed across the wetland width to evaluate the topography and vegetation characteristics. Surface sediment samples on the floodplain were taken at key morphological features along each transect and along the river longitudinal profile to determine organic content, particle size, and type of stored sediment. Astro turf mats were deployed on targeted transects and on key floodplain features to determine sediment accumulation rates. Field measurements of vegetation parameters (height, density, and stem diameter) were taken to calculate vegetation-induced hydraulic roughness to understand possible sedimentation feedbacks. The relative sediment volume coming into the wetland was greater than that leaving the wetland. This implies that some of the sediment is buffered within the wetland. An approximate proportion of 73% trapping efficiency of the incoming sediment was buffered within the floodplain wetland during the wet season. This accumulated approximately 4 tons within the wetland over the monitoring frame. Bed particle size in the longitudinal profile increased with distance downstream, this was due to localized tributary and hillslope inputs. Inundation depth varied across the floodplain wetland with deeper inundation depths at the head of the wetland than at the bottom; where particle size was larger with an increase in water level depth. This may be linked to both high stream velocities and variability of the floodplain topography. However, the observed trends were inconclusive and uncertain. Stronger correlations with particle size were shown by vegetation roughness (b* = 0.41) and distance from the channel (b* = -0.38). Flood benches and banks had a coarser D50 particle size than back swamps and oxbows. Coarser sediment in flood benches are associated with proximity to the sediment-laden water that experiences abrupt flow velocity changes, while finer material in oxbows are due to minimal flow velocities which reduce with distance from the channel. Finer particles remain in suspension and are carried aloft for longer periods at very low velocities. Therefore, particle size decreased with distance from the channel due to longer travel distances and high surface area relative to weight. Further results showed that finer surface sediment particle size was associated with high vegetation roughness whilst coarser material was associated with low roughness. This was due to vegetation geometry and type or changes in flow velocity and energy. Grassy vegetation induced finer particle size than shrubby vegetation that has a greater line spacing. Furthermore, vegetation roughness varied over the wet season; roughness was highest in late summer and low in early summer. Low roughness was due to fire occurrence in the study area which resulted in a decrease in biomass. Increasing vegetation roughness can be due to increased flood events, and the introduction of non-perennial species; which can increase sediment accumulation rates. Although studies have shown that vegetation density is the most essential factor affecting flow resistance and sedimentation processes; vegetation height and stem diameter for this study area seem to contrast these observations and rather may be the most significant contributing factors in sedimentation. This concluded that vegetation density may not always be the most essential component in sedimentation processes. Sediment particle size was inversely proportional to organic content; finer particle size are more cohesive and more capable of carrying organics. Regions further away from the channel such as oxbows with stable moisture conditions favour plant growth and soil formation thus are susceptible to high organic content. Flood benches are closer to the channel, thus have coarser material and fluctuating moisture conditions that have unstable high water flow velocities. High sediment accumulation rates on flood benches and oxbows is due to high connectivity to sediment-laden water and high hydroperiods or high residence time for sediment accumulation in oxbows. Sediment accumulation rate was shown to be a function of particle size itself (b* = 0.67) rather than the expected vegetation roughness. Although a true representation of sediment accumulation rates in the Gatberg Wetland was limited by the disturbance of astro turf mats by animals and possibly by high flooding events; the wetland can be regarded as a good sediment buffer as some sediment was stored (e.g. up to 48,04 kg/m2 in flood benches) within the wetland over the monitoring period. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Geography, 2021

The industry’s players are constantly faced with the challenge of finding ways in which to enhance their competitiveness. One of the most important challenges for organisations operating in this industry is to deliver the best service to their customers, hence ensuring they retain customer loyalty, growth and securing future profitability. While a number of competitors may rely on various competitive strategies such as lower prices, it could become increasingly challenging for others to adopt similar approaches without comprising profitability. To overcome this challenge, together with Barloworld, Avis has implemented various employment engagement strategies with the aim of attracting, empowering, and retaining an engaged workforce. Research has shown that employees provide organisations with sustainable competitive advantage. More specifically, it has shown that engaged employees outperform disengaged employees. The differentiating factor for organisations in the pursuit of competitive advantage would therefore be an engaged workforce. In order to remain competitive, Avis realised that their employees area source of competitive advantage. In the year 2013, Avis packaged and introduced EVP as a human resources strategy towards winning an engaged workforce. Some of the objectives for taking on this strategy were to increase job satisfaction and motivation amongst employees and thus result in higher job performance. The main purpose of this study was to measure the impact that the introduction of EVP had on employee engagement at Avis. Introducing a structured EVP plan within this organisation was aimed to increase employee engagement and thus, this study aimed to measure the impact of this intervention. A literature review was conducted to expand on the various definitions of EVP, employee engagement and the elements that influence and impact these variables. This research revealed that engaged employees make positive contributions to key business outcomes such as financial performance, productivity and customer satisfaction. An empirical study was conducted by means of a survey with a questionnaire as data collecting tool. The purpose of the structured questionnaire was to validate the findings obtained from the theoretical overview and to assess employees’ perceptions of the EVP elements, engagement factors and the impact of engagement on the organisational success. The population comprised of 142employeesand 65% a response rate was obtained. The key findings of the study indicated that in general employees are engaged and committed to the vision of the organisation. It also indicated that the introduction of EVP improved the manner in which employees’ viewed their leaders and created a leadership culture that was conducive to the success of the organisation. Furthermore, the study validated the existence of a strong positive relationship between EVP, employee motivation, leadership culture, employee retention, compensation and employee engagement. - Description: The exposure of livestock to antimicrobials for treatment, prophylaxis, or development advancement can select for antimicrobial resistant organisms that can be transmitted to humans. Salmonella as a significant zoonotic microorganism can go about as a likely supply of antimicrobial resistant determinants. Salmonella is a zoonotic pathogen that causes food and waterborne infections. It affects wild and domestic animals, and humans, by causing a number of infections including Salmonellosis. Salmonella species infect humans through the consumption of contaminated meat, like beef, chicken, pork etc. This study aimed to determine the molecular characterization and antimicrobial resistance profile of Salmonella species isolated from effluent discharged from the Fort Hare Dairy Farm in Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for the molecular confirmation of the presumptive Salmonella isolates targeting both ompC gene and typh gene. Standard disc diffusion method was used for the antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) as recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. The confirmed Salmonella isolates were tested against 12 test antimicrobial agents and were screened for antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) including blaTEM and amp for beta-lactams, and tetC for tetracycline. The research showed that the effluent discharge from this farm is contaminated with Salmonella. Presumptive Salmonella densities were ranging between 1,7 ×102 to 6,1×102 CFU/100ml, out of 83 presumptive isolates recovered, 61 were molecularly confirmed Salmonella typhimurium. The most prevalent Salmonella species found in this study was Salmonella typhimurium, which was more abundant in the final effluent discharges than in the water samples. This may be due to the contamination from farm animal faeces. The susceptibility against 12 different antibiotics by the recovered Salmonella typhimurium were examined, and Salmonella typhimurium isolates was notably resistant to azithromycin, ampicillin, amoxiclav, but less resistance were seen on doripenem , meropenem and ciprofloxacin but none of the isolates were resistant to norfloxacin. Antibiotic results obtained from this research suggest that Quinolones (Norfloxicin, Ciprofloxacin and Nalidixic acid), and Carbapenems (Meropenem and Doripenem.) were the most effective antibiotics against Salmonella. Forty-eight percent of isolates were found to be resistant to more than 3 antibiotics from different families thus considering them to be multidrug resistant. Resistant determinants ampC, blaTEM and tetC were detected on resistant isolates. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics on animal producing farms put human lives at risk as it promotes the emergency of multidrug resistant bacteria. The study aimed to contribute to the development of the framework for performance management of the service suppliers in the public sector in South Africa. The primary objectives of the study were to investigate and develop a framework for managing and enhancing the performance of the service suppliers in the public sector. More specifically, the study investigated the influence of scope of work, a contract strategy, performance management, risk management and change management. The study sought to formulate a structured and practical approach on how to manage service suppliers to the public sector. The study will seek to understand what influences the success for the win-win approach in the Public Sector and Services Suppliers – so that both parties can see themselves as partners in the delivery of the services. The sample consists of 70 employees across all the public sector in South Africa, which consists of national government, provincial municipalities, district municipalities, local government and State-owned companies. The study targeted those respondents involved in the management of the service suppliers to the public study. - Description: The prevalence of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) deaths is high in the Eastern Cape. Anecdotal evidence indicates that most women fall pregnant because of attitudes towards contraceptives and are seemingly unaware of pregnancy-related complications. Hence, the objective of this study was to examine the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of pregnant women concerning pregnancyinduced hypertension in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey involving 200 pregnant women attending antenatal healthcare clinics in Mdantsane, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. A self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Collected data were managed and analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 24. Data analysis involved both descriptive (count, frequency, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Chi-square and logistics regression). For the inferential statistics, the level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: It was observed that the married women were more likely to be aware of PIH compared to single women (OR=2.4 95%CI (1.17; 4.90)). Of the 45 married women, 73.3% were aware of PIH compared to single women. Out of the women who participated in the study, 43.8% showed attitudes indicating they were not aware of this condition and associated complications from high-pressure during pregnancy. Compared to those in their first pregnancy, those who had previous pregnancy were more likely to be aware of PIH (OR=17.1 95 % CI (9.09; 32.15)). Of the 140 previously pregnant women, 83.6 % were aware of PIH compared to those during their first pregnancy. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that sociodemographic factors play a role in pregnant women 's understanding of PIH. Improving knowledge of PIH among pregnant women requires context-specific strategies. - Description: Surveys are an essential tool for collecting data and most surveys use complex sampling designs to collect the data. Complex sampling designs are used mainly to enhance representativeness in the sample by accounting for the underlying structure of the population. This often results in data that are non-independent and clustered. Ignoring complex design features such as clustering, stratification, multistage and unequal probability sampling may result in inaccurate and incorrect inference. An overview of, and difference between, design-based and model-based approaches to inference for complex survey data has been discussed. This study adopts a model-based approach. The objective of this study is to discuss and describe the modelling approach in analysing complex survey data. This is specifically done by introducing the principle inference methods under which data from complex surveys may be analysed. In particular, discussions on the theory and methods of model fitting for the analysis of complex survey data are presented. We begin by discussing unique features of complex survey data and explore appropriate methods of analysis that account for the complexity inherent in the survey data. We also explore the widely applied logistic regression modelling of binary data in a complex sample survey context. In particular, four forms of logistic regression models are fitted. These models are generalized linear models, multilevel models, mixed effects models and generalized linear mixed models. Simulated complex survey data are used to illustrate the methods and models. Various R packages are used for the analysis. The results presented and discussed in this thesis indicate that a logistic mixed model with first and second level predictors has a better fit compared to a logistic mixed model with first level predictors. In addition, a logistic multilevel model with first and second level predictors and nested random effects provides a better fit to the data compared to other logistic multilevel fitted models. Similar results were obtained from fitting a generalized logistic mixed model with first and second level predictor variables and a generalized linear mixed model with first and second level predictors and nested random effects. , Thesis (MSC) -- Faculty of Science, Statistics, 2021
