Best practice strategies to eradicate business growth challenges of female-owned small businesses in Uganda

- Description: Small businesses of which the majority are female-owned are the backbone of many economies across the globe. Despite the increasingly important role of female-owned small businesses to economic development and poverty alleviation, the growth of female-owned businesses in Uganda remains a major concern. The purpose of this study, therefore, was twofold – to identify business growth challenges of female small business entrepreneurs in Uganda and also to identify the strategies for overcoming these small business growth challenges to add to existing theory within the small business management field. The study followed a qualitative research with an exploratory descriptive case study design approach. A comprehensive international and national literature on female entrepreneurship, the Ugandan business environment, small business growth challenges in Uganda, and global best practice strategies for stimulating small business growth was conducted. Primary data were collected using face-to-face and telephonic interviews with semi-structured interview guides. Twelve (three female small business entrepreneurs and nine small business support specialists) participants were selected using purposive, theoretical, and expert sampling methods. The biographical profiles of the participants interviewed during the study were presented as case studies. Firstly, the biographical profiles of the three Ugandan small businesses (supermarket, restaurant and hairdressing salon) and the female entrepreneurs were presented. Secondly, the biographical profiles of the nine small business support institutions (two governmental, two funding, two training, one export promotion) and two business associations, as well as the profile of the small business support specialists were presented. Based on the content analysis of the qualitative interviews with the three female small business entrepreneurs, their current business status revealed that the female entrepreneurs have growth aspirations and aligned their goals towards it, but did not have strategies in place to effect business growth. Further still, based on the empirical results of the female small business participants, eight main challenges were identified as: lack of adequate business support and business skills training; demanding and costly business registration and trading license processes; high business taxation; access to finance; inadequate road infrastructure; family-related issues and cultural taboos. These participants also suggested some solutions to overcome these challenges. The small business support specialist participants either confirmed the challenges that specifically females experience or confirmed that they are perceived and not real challenges, or that it is not female-specific but generic to all small businesses. The study further established what female small business participants regard as possible strategies to the challenges experienced, while the small business support specialist participants could indicate which strategies have already been implemented and also suggest further strategies. It was concluded that although many of the challenges could apply to all small businesses, this study found that cultural taboos and family-related issues are a real challenge for female small business entrepreneurs. As seen in this study, these two main challenges can further influence some of the other challenges. It can influence whether qualifying for access to funding, having extra funding to pay for registration, licensing and tax, what the business is allowed to sell, and even the novelty of a female owing a business, never mind wishing to grow their businesses. Although some challenges such as discrimination against female entrepreneurs regarding access to small business support or funding is perceived, there are real infrastructure challenges such as rural road conditions, access to electricity and ICT. Several strategies are already in place in Uganda to assist all small businesses with business growth, but not necessarily just assisting female small business entrepreneurs. However, many of these strategies are work-in-progress and have not yet had the desired end result. This study made a contribution to knowledge by indicating that government-, skills training-, financial- and export promotion institutions, as well as business associations together with influential community members, can contribute significantly to the implementation of several strategies to promote female small business growth. In addition, the chapter on best practices of global developed – and developing countries provided insight into making well-informed practical recommendations that Uganda can implement to assist small businesses to grow and in particular females small businesses. These global best practice strategies for the growth of SMMEs as applied within the seven selected seven countries were elaborated on in detail with a clear indication of the responsible bodies in Uganda that can affect these strategies. The emphasis was on suggesting strategies that can be practically executed with relative ease in Uganda as a developing country. This study concludes that it remains the responsibility of female small business entrepreneurs to make the effort to grow their small businesses and turn their business visions into reality. They should write a business plan, search for and approach small business support institutions for assistance and engage in an extensive networking drive to grow their customer market and to search for opportunities to grow their business such as private-public sector partnerships or expansion into the international market. Awareness is not just the responsibility of the several small business support institutions in Uganda, but female small business entrepreneurs should actively scrutinise media reports in newspapers, the radio and television to obtain information regarding business support opportunities.

Biological activities of tulbaghia violacea against cryptococcus species

- Description: Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii, which are environmental yeasts, are the etiological agents of cryptococcosis in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals, and account for high mortality and morbidity rates in sub-Saharan Africa. The current antifungal agents used for treatment of cryptococcal infections either target the fungal cell wall (β-(1,3) glucan and chitin) or cell membrane directly or ergosterol biosynthetic pathways or fungal DNA and RNA. Gaps in antifungal therapy include the unavailability and exhorbitant costs of these drugs especially to patients in the developing world. Drug resistance to conventional drugs is also an ever-increasing problem. It is therefore essential to find alternative natural compounds from medicinal plants that are safer, cheaper and more widely available. Tulbaghia violacea, also known as wild garlic, has been used as a traditional remedy in South Africa for the treatment of several ailments. Aqueous and organic extracts of the plant have been demonstrated to have antimicrobial and antifungal activity against several pathogens. However, there is a huge gap in our current knowledge in that the mechanism/s of action/s of these extracts have not been fully investigated. The focus of the current study therefore was to determine whether T. violacea extracts from the roots, rhizome, leaves and tubers exhibited antifungal activity against C. neoformans and C. gattii and to evaluate the ability of the rhizome extract to induce changes in key fungal virulence factors. Three mechanisms (ergosterol, β-(1,3) glucan and chitin production) regulating the antifungal activity of the rhizome extract were also examined. In the current study, phytochemical analysis of aqueous extracts of the roots, leaves, rhizomes and tubers showed that the rhizomes had the highest phenolic, saponin and tannin content when compared to the other plant organs. Fingerprinting by GC-MS revealed identical compounds in the different plant parts with the detection of 4 H Pyran-4-one DDMP (known antifungal), previously unreported in studies on T. violacea. The bulk of the extract comprised of 40% sulphur-containing and 20% furan-containing compounds. The remaining minor compounds comprised of 2x alcohols (13.3%), 1x pyran (6.7%), 1x ketone (6.7%), 1x halogen (6.7%) and 1x acid (6.7%) compounds. The rhizomes also had highest content of 2 methyl methioacetic acid, benzophenone and chloromethyl methylsulfide compared to the other plant parts. The rhizomes were found to be more potent against both pathogenic fungi tested here with an MIC and MFC of 1.25 mg/ml. Nystatin was included as a positive control when determining the MIC’s and MFC’s of the different plant extracts. The antifungal nature of the T. violacea extracts in the current study may be due to the synergistic effects of the sulphide, furan, pyran and ketone compounds present in the extracts, but this still remains to be verified in future studies. An investigation of the effects of an aqueous rhizome extract of T. violacea on Cryptococcus virulence factors showed that phospholipase activity of C. neoformans and C. gattii remained unaffected with increasing sub-lethal doses of the plant extract. There was significant reduction in urease production in both fungi in a dose dependent manner relative to the untreated cultures after 24 hr exposure to the extract. However, urease production reverted to normal after 48 hr post exposure implying that the cultures were able to recover due to temporary inhibition of urease activity. A significant decrease in melanin production was observed in both C. neoformans and C. gattii with increasing sub-inhibitory concentrations of the rhizome extract. Investigation of the effect of the plant extract on the ultrastucture of the fungi via Transmission Electron Microscopy showed the induction of cytomorphological changes in C. neoformans and C. gattii. Changes included thickening of the cell wall, an increase in the number of vacuoles, mitochondrial swelling and occasional detachment of the membrane from the cell wall. These changes suggest the activation of possible defence mechanisms to compensate for the loss of cellular materials or an effort to sequester toxic T. violacea components or toxic intermediates generated from inhibited cellular pathways. The capsule size and architecture remained unaltered in the presence of sub-lethal doses of the rhizome extract. To study the mechanism of action of the rhizome extract on ergosterol biosynthesis, total sterols were extracted and ergosterol, squalene, 2,3-oxidosqualene and lanosterol were quantified using Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Ergosterol concentration declined in a dose dependent manner for both pathogenic yeasts similar to the positive control terbinafine, while there was a slight accumulation of squalene in C. gattii only. 2,3-oxidosqualene levels accumulated in both fungi relative to the untreated control. Lanosterol production showed an oscillatory trend for the two microorganisms. Together, these findings indicate that the rhizome extract is capable of inhibiting squalene epoxidase and 2,3-oxidosqualene/ lanosterol cyclase causing a decrease in ergosterol production.

Statistically there is a high rate of divorce in South Africa and there have been significant shifts in trends over time. However, black South African men’s experience of, action in, and adjustment to divorce has been relatively neglected in the divorce research, yet it is important for understanding contemporary social arrangements and processes, as well as for broadening the understanding of black South African men’s lives. How black South African men describe their situations and respond to marital dissolution may point to their positions in the gender-structured community and to how they interpret the nature of social practice, marriages, divorce and their position in society. The present study aimed at exploring black South African men’s experience of, and adjustment to, divorce. More specifically, the study developed a divorce-stress-adjustment model for divorced black South African men. The theoretical framework underpinning this study was that of Symbolic Interactionism that was complemented and enhanced by Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory, focusing specifically on identity development in adulthood. This was a qualitative study using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as both the research design and data analytic theory and process. The eight participants were volunteers who were recruited purposively. In accordance with IPA guidelines, data for the study was collected using biographical questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The emerging themes were grouped into four superordinate themes, that is, pre-divorce experiences, experiencing divorce, adjustment process and post-divorce experience. Each superordinate theme had corresponding subordinate themes and subthemes. The themes were then used to develop the divorce-stress adjustment model indicating that the experience of divorce is an interconnected process. Weed’s recommendations for interpretative synthesis of interview data were used.

- Description: The removal of the uterus, medically referred to as a hysterectomy, is a permanent and irreversible procedure that potentially results in a number of immediate and significant effects. Performing a hysterectomy is at times the only medical option to a long and traumatic history of pelvic pains and surgeries. The decision to undergo this very costly, painful, and life-changing procedure can have an influence on the way women view themselves. Women’s narratives of womanhood before and after hysterectomy need to be understood within the context of women’s socially constructed identities. Gendered identity has been closely linked to genital and/or reproductive organs and the removal of these organs may influence the way women and societies define womanhood.The interpretive paradigm of constructionism with a narrative inquiry design was used as the lens to examine the women’s experiences. In-depth interviews were analysed through thematic analysis. The findings of this research revealed negative experiences resulting from severe symptoms before hysterectomy, exposed multi-layered structures of power and dominance during treatment, and indicated positive outcomes of hysterectomy. The findings should inform medical and allied practitioners regarding hysterectomy as a treatment option and add to the theoretical debate on the relationships between hysterectomy, womanhood, and identity.

- Description: SMEs have been acknowledged by governments globally as a prime source of economic growth and development. In Africa there has been a noticeable increase in the number of SME establishments. In Uganda, SMEs are the most popular business choice and play a major role in the national economy. Although SMEs significant economic contributions are generally acknowledged, being ethical and successful has become a challenge, as many SMEs in Uganda have not fully adopted and integrated ethics into their business strategies. Understanding the reasons for the increased unethical behaviour in SMEs is central to their continued business success. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the factors that influence ethical business conduct in Ugandan SMEs. From a comprehensive literature review, three main independent variables (staff-, business- and external environment factors) were identified as variables influencing ethical business conduct (dependent variable) of SMEs. A hypothetical model was developed to determine whether the independent variables have an influence on the dependent variable. Twelve hypotheses were formulated to test the relationships between three staff factors, five business factors, four external environment factors and ethical business conduct. The study sought the perceptions of SME owners or managers in the Kampala District and utilised the quantitative research paradigm. A survey was conducted with the aid of a structured self-administered questionnaire distributed by three fieldworkers. A combination of convenience and snowball sampling was utilised. The final sample comprised 384 respondents. The validity of the measuring instrument was ascertained by using exploratory factor analysis. The Cronbach‟s alpha values for reliability were calculated for each of the factors identified during the exploratory factor analysis. A total of ten valid and reliable factors were retained. Pearson product-moment correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to test the correlation and statistical significance of the relationships hypothesised between the various independent and dependent variables. One statistically significant relationship was found between the staff factors (employee attitude) and ethical business conduct. Two statistically significant relationships were found between the business factors (knowledge acquisition and management practices) and ethical business conduct. Three statistically significant relationships were found between the external environment factors (legal requirements, industry norm and media power) and ethical business conduct. External environmental factors seem to have a greater influence on SME ethical business conduct in Uganda. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to identify if significant relationships exist between the eight demographic variables and seven reliable and valid independent variables. Furthermore, post-hoc Scheffé tests identified where the significant differences occurred between the different categories. Cohen‟s d-values were calculated in order to assess the practical significance of the mean scores. A total of twelve practical significant relationships were identified. SME owners or managers should consider employing staff with the right attitude to uphold sound ethical business values. They should implement ethical management practices to promote ethical business conduct amongst employees and ensure that employees are made aware of what is regarded as acceptable ethical business behaviour. SME owners or managers should adhere to legal requirements and industry norms to be known as businesses exhibiting ethical behaviour and utilise media to instil and guide ethical values in employees. Lastly, they must pay attention to the role that demographical variables such as: gender, level of education, current employment status, number of years in business and number of employees, play in behaving ethically in business.

- Description: This research examines the relationship between business, the state and society in South Africa -- particularly the Western Cape -- over the period from 1960 to 1990, viewed against the background of economic conditions in this region, South Africa and the world. Utilising a development history approach, it is based on an extensive study of primary and secondary documentation, supplemented by a panel of in-depth interviews and observation. This study finds that the relationship between business and apartheid incorporated both functional and dysfunctional elements, although over time the benefits diminished and the costs multiplied. The latter, Regulation Theory suggests, is true for any institutional order, but it could be argued that, under apartheid, the particularly fragile and contradictory nature of the institutional arrangement made inevitable crises more rapid and more pronounced. On the one hand, apartheid restricted the economic development of the country, as a result of a range of factors from skills shortages to the visible waste of resources on grand ideological projects and security; as suggested by Resource Curse Theory, minerals windfalls tend to encourage irresponsible behaviour by governments. On the other hand, certain businesses prospered, notably the Afrikaner business sector. All business benefited from the overall growth of the 1950s and 1960s, whilst niche players often did quite well even during the 1980s. Further, the South African businessmen, both English- and Afrikaans-speaking, were skilful in adapting to the difficult conditions brought about by apartheid, and in many cases they prospered. As highlighted by Business Systems Theory, embedded social ties and informal relations may help either support or compensate for formal regulatory pressures. Many of these general trends were particularly accentuated in the Western Cape. The fact that business protests against government policies were often more motivated by concerns as to future property rights and of social disorder, rather than human rights, does indeed raise serious moral issues. However, in helping encourage political reform, they may have made a positive contribution. This study is founded on three related strands of thinking within the political economy tradition, Resource Curse Theory, Regulation Theory and Business Systems Theory, with the emerging common ground between these three bodies of thought being highlighted. As suggested by Resource Curse Theory, non-mineral producing regions tend to be particularly adversely affected in mineral rich countries, and there is little doubt that the region bore all the costs of the collapse of the gold price in the 1980s, and lacked the deeper capital base of the now Gauteng region to cushion the shock. Whilst apartheid may, as we have seen, have served conservative sectors of agriculture and mining quite well for many years, it also involved large costs incurred through social engineering experiments and the increasing demands of the security establishment. Resource Curse Theory suggests that national economies become dangerously dependent on the vagaries of commodities markets, and that the process of institutional design and evolution is hampered by assumptions of easy money which may temporary resolve the negative consequences of any institutional shortcomings. The poor price of gold in much of the 1980s brought about a crisis in the system, and, there is little doubt that this contributed to the demise of the order. As suggested by Resource Curse Theory, the experience of the Western Cape, a region of the country poor in minerals, was often one of inefficient and wasteful state intervention, coupled with increasingly poor performance of non-mineral related industries. Indeed, the effects of the recession of the 1980s were most pronounced in non-mineral producing areas of the country, particularly in the Western Cape. Regulation Theory highlights that no set of institutions and practices is ever totally coherent and functional, but at specific times may work to promote both certain types of economic activity and overall growth. It is wrong to suggest that because an order only works for some players at specific times it is simply dysfunctional or does not work properly at all. However, over time, internal contradictions mount and the benefits diminish. A particular feature of the apartheid order was that some of its core benefits at its height were particularly concentrated on some players (segments of Afrikaner commerce and industry, mining and agriculture), whilst the costs were shared across a wider range of players, with a disproportionate burden being borne by the black majority. A further feature was that the costs were often indirect and spread over many years if the benefits were sometimes immediate: this would include the persistent dysfunctionality of much of the South African education system and the criminal ecosystem that was nurtured through sanctions busting. Internal contradictions and spreading dysfunctionality rarely leads to a conscious and coherent period of institutional redesign, but rather an incoherent, experimental and contested process, such as characterized late apartheid reforms, and, indeed, the post February-1990 negotiation process. Finally, again at a theoretical level, as Business Systems Theory highlights, it is important to take account of the formal and informal ties interlinking firms in different sectors in the region, and firms and government, and the extent to which regions within a particular country may follow very distinct developmental trajectories. The benefits and the costs of the system diffused unevenly in the region, giving many players both a stake in the existing order, and an interest in some or other type of reform.

- Description: This study investigated the capacity building for developmental local government with reference to the Kicukiro District of Rwanda. Its aim was to examine the contribution of capacity-building interventions towards a developmental local government and at the same time investigate factors that hinder their implementation in Kicukiro district. The study provides an extensive historical background on local government in Rwa-nda with a particular focus on its policy, legal and institutional framework, whereby the developmental local government environment has been analysed. Furthermore, this study explores the theoretical framework of capacity building in general, and in this regard particular emphasis was given to capacity building in relation to developmental local government. The study also argued that without appropriate capacity it would be difficult for the district to fulfil its developmental mandate. This research followed both qualitative and quantitative approaches of study. It involved a survey in which a structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews were used as data gathering instruments. Through data analysis, findings of the study have shed light on the fact that capacity building constitutes an indispensable mechanism for local government to achieve its developmental mandate, despite challenges associated with the process of capacity building. The study found that the Kicukiro district has made a significant progress towards the implementation of capacity-building interventions despite the fact that these interventions are still fragmented, uncoordinated and still supply-driven. Furthermore, the study revealed that the capacities already built generated considerable impetus that contributed to socio-economic development within the Kicukiro district. The study also found that despite the progress made in both capacity building and development in Kicukiro district, there are capacity gaps and factors which are undermining further progress in this regard. Therefore, the study recommends, among others, an effective co-ordination of capacity-building interventions in order to avoid duplication and fragmentation of capacity-building efforts.

- Description: The aim of this study was to uncover preschool caregivers’ and parents’ views about preschool education as a preschool readiness programme in the Queenstown education district. The research study addressed the following specific objectives, to determine: the caregivers’ and parents’ understanding of school readiness nature of preschool education; the extent to which the caregivers’ practices can make children ready for formal schooling; the parents’ assessment of the preschool centres as places that make children ready for formal schooling; caregivers’ and parents’ views on the challenges facing preschool centres against making children ready for formal schooling; and lastly, the possible solutions to the challenges facing preschool centres. In the present study, both qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Quantitative data were gathered through questionnaires from 40 preschool caregivers at preschools and 40 parents of the children in those preschools that were chosen by the caregivers on the basis of parents who are highly committed in the education of their children. The qualitative data were gathered through focus group discussions with 2 focus groups located in the Queenstown Education district. Twelve participants were interviewed, and these comprised 6 caregivers that formed the focus group discussion 1 and 6 parents that formed the focus group discussion 2, using the interview schedules as guides. Purposive sampling to select the participants was used. Triangulation design was used to gather both quantitative and qualitative data at the same time and to integrate the two forms of data in order to have a better understanding of the research objectives. The research findings indicated that the most frequently reported issues by the participants were the problems with some caregivers who had limited knowledge to make children ready for formal schooling. Some of the parents and caregivers do not understand the importance of the domains of development in making children fully ready for formal schooling. There is still lack of parental involvement in those centres; no effective communication between parents and staff; caregivers are not aware of the policies that govern the preschools; poverty and unemployment are factors that inhibit the right of young children to education; no proper resources in preschools and the unregistered preschools also still need to be helped by coordinated efforts from communities and the government bodies. It was concluded that the quality of early childhood development(ECD) programmes in Queenstown preschools was still compromised. The study recommended extensive investment in infrastructure and learning and teaching support materials is necessary; there should be sufficient staffing with ECD expertise; programmes should be designed in order to educate and encourage parents to actively involve themselves with preschool activities.

- Description: The Catholic Charismatic Renewal is a movement within the Catholic Church that blends and synthesizes elements of Catholicism and Pentecostalism. The movement straddles these two religious traditions within Christianity. Besides its incorporation of elements of Catholicism and Pentecostalism, the movement also has as its objective, the revitalizing and renewal of the Catholic Church through the power of the Holy Spirit. These fundamental orientations of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal distinguish it from other Catholic movements, bestowing on it its unique identity. Although different from other Catholic movements, the movement and its members lay claim to a Catholic identity and seek to assert its legitimacy within the Catholic Church. Existing literature has provided useful insights into the question of identity within the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. However, the question of identity construction within the movement has not been adequately and comprehensively addressed in academic literature. This is especially the case in the African context. This leaves therefore a gap in our knowledge of how the movement and its members construct their catholic and charismatic identities. This study sets out to explore how the movement and its members construct their identity in relation to the Holy Spirit, the institutional Catholic Church and other Catholics, as well as in the context of the movement’s ritual music. Identity construction in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is seen as key to making meaning of the movement and its place within Catholicism. The study adopted a qualitative research and ethnographic approach in which empirical data was collected in the context of fieldwork through informal, semi-structured and focus group interviews as well as participant observation during the activities of a Catholic Charismatic prayer group in Minna, Nigeria. Theoretical perspectives drawn from identity, hermeneutics and anthropology of extraordinary experience were used as analytical lens in the study. The study revealed that identity within the Catholic Charismatic Renewal was constructed principally in relation to the Holy Spirit. A spiritual experience or encounter was central in such identity construction, and the subjective and intersubjective identity of the members revolved around the two key concepts of ‘spirit-centred identity’ and ‘empowerment’. The study indicated that the members of the movement constructed their identity in ways that demonstrated their loyalty to the Church and their status as an officially recognised Catholic movement. In addition, their identity was also constructed in relation to the functions that they perceived themselves to perform within the Catholic Church. Although the members of the movement considered their charismatic and catholic identities to be compatible, they understood themselves to be different from other Catholics. The study also showed that while music was considered to be important within the movement, the context and content of its ritual music were overwhelmingly Pentecostal, and music that projected a catholic identity was relegated to the background and given expression mainly in the realm of individual religious practice. The study suggests that identity construction within the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is multiple, ongoing, flexible, and sometimes contradictory and paradoxical. Through its identity construction, the members of the movement demonstrate the heterogeneity of the Catholic space and seek to extend the boundaries of Catholicism.

The research design used in this study contained elements of both the quantitative and qualitative approaches, which allowed the researcher to use structured questionnaires in data collection, on which space was provided for comments. This study was influenced and shaped by the concerns raised by a number of General Managers in the course of various provincial meetings. The main purpose of this research was to identify retention strategies that could be used by selected departments to reduce the turnover of their talented staff. The research also investigated methods to retain knowledge within departments that could possibly be lost due to a high turnover rate among talented staff. The first step used to resolve the issues discussed above was to conduct a full literature study. The literature study sought to reveal what characteristics were required in the departments that ensured that staff would be happy in those departments and remain there for a long time. The literature study also covered what knowledge management methods could be used in managing valuable knowledge. Secondly, the views of current staff and management of the selected departments on staff and knowledge management strategies were solicited in an empirical study, which involved the completion of structured questionnaires. It is the researcher’s aim that this study will, firstly, contribute to the existing body of knowledge of staff turnover and that the Provincial Departments will take into cognisance the problems that lead to employee turnover. Secondly, that it will contribute to an improvement in employee working conditions in various Provincial Government departments.

- Description: The research presented in this thesis investigates challenges faced by principals in historically disadvantaged schools in terms of their role as instructional leaders facilitating the implementation of curriculum policies. The study consists of two parts. The first study sampled 25 school principals, 80 teachers and 11 department of education officials from the Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth education districts in the Eastern Cape. Data obtained in the first study were generated by administering a pen-and-paper questionnaire and individual interviews to selected participants. The second study employed an online questionnaire that was open to principals, teachers and departmental officials in all provinces of South Africa in order to generate data over as wide a geographic range as possible. Mixed methods were used to analyse the qualitative and quantitative data from the two studies. Thematic analysis techniques were employed to categorise qualitative data and the quantitative data were subjected to analytical techniques to provide descriptive and inferential statistics. The data revealed that school principals view themselves as change agents who should be in the forefront of change and curriculum implementation, and that they believe that they know what is expected of them in this regard. However, they recognise that they are not adequately prepared for the task of instructional leadership. The data also suggest that teachers have expectations that principals should be trained in instructional leadership and work closely with departmental officials in order to provide guidance and leadership at school level to address their professional needs. Problems related to capacity and skills of subject advisors and other district officials were revealed by the study. These issues are generally and informally recognised, but have not been formally raised within the Department of Education. The findings of the study also highlight the fact that, after nearly two decades in the new political dispensation, there are still vast differences within the South African schooling system between school types. These differences are most evident between ex-Model C schools and historically disadvantaged ex-DET schools, and it is recognised that principals in ex-DET schools need support tailored to their particular circumstances and context. The findings in this study support the notion that much needs to be done in South Africa in terms of empowering school principals; especially those from historically disadvantaged schools. The data provide insights into some of the constraints of local context, which enables better understandings of the challenges of instructional leadership in historically disadvantaged schools. These understandings should be of value when considering strategies to support principals in their role of instructional leaders.

Characterization and ecology of selected micro-estuaries and micro-outlets in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa

- Description: South Africa has more than 200 Temporarily Open/Closed Estuaries (TOCEs) along its approximately 3000 km coastline. In addition, there are approximately 200 micro-estuaries and micro-outlets on the subcontinent, many of which share some of the characteristics with TOCEs but differ in that they are supplied by localised coastal stream catchments with a more limited supply of freshwater and less connectivity to the marine environment. Between 2015 and 2016, this study endeavoured to investigate the physico-chemical properties, microalgal dynamics as well as the seasonal species abundance and composition of aquatic invertebrates and fishes in four micro-estuaries and four micro-outlets along the warm-temperate section of the Eastern Cape coast. The micro-outlets were dominated by oligohaline or freshwater conditions, while the micro-estuaries were mostly mesohaline. Microalgal biomass in these systems was influenced by temperature, nutrient conditions and light availability. Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera dominated benthic macro-invertebrate communities in the micro-outlets, while Amphipoda and Mysida were most dominant in micro-estuaries. Copepoda and Amphipoda dominated the zooplankton assemblages in both system types. Nekton communities in micro-outlets were dominated by juvenile Myxus capensis and tadpoles (mostly Xenopus laevis), while Oreochromis mossambicus, Gilchristella aestuaria, M. capensis and Mugil cephalus were the four most common species in the micro-estuaries. Seasonal variations in physico-chemical parameters and community composition of both the nekton and invertebrates were recorded during this study. Micro-estuaries and micro-outlets exhibited relatively lower diversity and abundances of biota than TOCEs. Furthermore, the micro-estuaries have a low estuarine function when compared to TOCEs, while the micro-outlets have very limited estuarine characteristics and were dominated by freshwater biota. The micro-systems are smaller in size and contain lower proportions of estuary-associated taxa when compared to larger estuarine systems such as TOCEs and permanently open estuaries. The results of this study confirm that there are distinctions between the biota of iv the two micro-system types, thus making biotic assemblages, together with physico-chemical parameters, a viable tool for differentiating between micro-estuaries and micro-outlets. This study represents the first investigation into the ecological functioning of micro-estuaries and micro-outlets. As a whole, micro-systems serve as nursery areas for freshwater-associated invertebrate taxa. Due to their limited periods of stability, micro-estuaries serve as intermediate nursery areas for 0+ juveniles of estuary-associated marine fish which, after less than a year, then migrate to larger estuarine systems located nearby. The small catchment size and short period of stability in these systems heightens their level of sensitivity to water flow alterations through dams, direct water abstraction, afforestation and watercourse diversion, while their lower buffering capacity makes them more susceptible to pollution and nutrient inputs from intensive agricultural activities and urban expansion.

- Description: The South African National Department of Tourism has recently initiated the National Tourism Sector Strategy aimed at developing a sustainable tourism economy, and making the country a Top 20 global tourism destination by 2020.China is one of South Africa’s major non-African sources of tourist arrivals. To ensure a growing share of this booming market, South African tourism scholars and practitioners have to pay close attention to the behaviour of Chinese outbound tourists, particularly their destination choice behaviour. The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB)– an extension of the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA)– can serve as a basis for researching destination choice. According to the TPB literature, intention is the most immediate and important determinant of behaviour. Three direct predictors of intention, namely, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived control, are functions of latent behavioural, normative, and control beliefs, respectively. The TPB is parsimonious but open to the inclusion of additional predictors if there is evidence that these predictors may explain a significant proportion of the variance in intention and behaviour after the basic predictors (attitude, subjective norms, and perceived control) have been accounted for. The current research successfully extended the TPB model for predicting potential Chinese tourists’ intentions to visit South Africa by adding two additional variables: travel motivation and travel constraints. The push-pull motivation framework discussed in the study postulates that people travel because they are pushed by internal forces (inner needs) and pulled by external forces (destination attributes). Typical barriers to travel include intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural constraints. The new model makes an important contribution to the literature on destination choice, and provides South Africa’s destination marketers with suggestions for attracting and serving Chinese tourists. In addition, the research shows that both travel motivation and travel constraints can be used as bases for segmenting the outbound Chinese tourist market interested in visiting South Africa. A survey approach and a structured questionnaire distributed electronically to the online panel members of a Chinese market research company were instrumental in collecting the empirical data for the study. The questionnaire was originally written in English and translated into Chinese (Mandarin) via a blind translation-back-translation method. Attitude, subjective norms, perceived control, and visit intention were all operationalised as unidimensional and used scales adapted from previous studies. New scales were developed for travel motivation and travel constraints– both operationalised as multidimensional. Quota sampling, used to identify respondents aged 18 or older and living in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, resulted in 630 usable questionnaires obtained from 1,510 sent invitation e-mails, yielding a response rate of 41.7%. The raw data collected were prepared through the sequential steps of editing, coding, and filing, and then analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive analysis suggested that broadening personal horizons, viewing the natural scenery, and seeing something different were the top motives for visiting South Africa, while language, fear of crime, and lack of travel companions were the top barriers to visiting South Africa. According to the factor analysis, travel motivation had three underlying dimensions – learning, escape, and aesthetics and appreciation, while operational, risk and fear, and social barriers were three underlying dimensions of travel constraints. Regression analysis showed that the proposed extended TPB model had higher predictive power for visit intention than both TRA and TPB models; the basic predictors – attitude, subjective norms, and perceived control – all had a significant impact on visit intention; and in terms of the additional predictors, learning, operational constraints, and social constraints had a significant impact on visit intention. The analysis of variance indicated that travel frequency and age were the most profound background factors with an influence on the extended TPB model. Finally, cluster analysis resulted in two market segments with distinct profiles, that is, High-Motivation/ Low-Constraint (HMLC) tourists and Low-Motivation/High-Constraint (LMHC) tourists. Based on the theoretical and empirical findings of the current research, it is recommended that destination marketers in South Africa: advertise specific benefits of touring South Africa, namely, increasing knowledge, relieving stress, and enjoying high environmental quality, to advance Chinese residents’ perceptions of the country; develop tourism experiences that can be taken in a week or shorter to cater for the unique annual leave and public holiday policy in China; launch a media relations campaign in China to ensure that the facts about South Africa are communicated without distortion; collaborate with other destination stakeholders such as government and businesses, to actively attract and retain Chinese tourists for example by educating the public about Chinese culture and training employees to improve the quality of service; target the HMLC tourists via the Internet (particularly the social media) and by developing holiday packages that include activities related to cultural tourism, rest and relaxation, and nature-based tourism; and target the LMHC tourists by cooperating with local travel agencies and by developing holiday packages that highlight the diversity of tourism activities and offer value-added products/services.

- Description: Contemporary debates about development confer a prominent role to citizen participation and decentralization. Growing scepticism about the efficacy of narrowly conceived measures add pressure to reform development both theoretically and in practical terms. There is a greater understanding that ‘traditional’ development approaches and policies need to be reformulated and decentralization and citizen participation have been proposed as remedies to previous development failures. It is frequently argued that citizen participation will improve the efficiency and efficacy of public services. Citizen participation is meant to render local government more accountable and to contribute to deepening democracy, by reinforcing representative democratic institutions with participatory forms. At the same time, decentralization reforms have been proposed as a response to the failures of highly centralized states. From a political perspective, it is argued, decentralization reforms can help the central state gain legitimacy and have been seen as a strategy for maintaining political stability. It has been repeatedly suggested that physical proximity makes it easier for citizens to hold local officials accountable for their performance. From an economic perspective, decentralization can improve the match between the mix of services provided by the public sector and the preferences of the local population. It has also been noted that people are more willing to pay for services that respond to their priorities and that increased competition between local governments generates spaces for more creative responses adapted to local needs. But then, can decentralization and citizen participation live up to the faith and expectations that they have inspired? I argue that the literature commonly over-emphasises the role of citizen participation and decentralization in development and what these processes and reforms can achieve. Much of the evidence is anecdotal in nature and tends to neglect the specific contexts in which these processes take place. Also largely ignored are political economy considerations and a critical exploration of the relationship between these two key words. At best, when their interrelationships are addressed decentralization and citizen participation are conceived as based on a symbiotic relationship. I suggest, however, that the relationship between these two processes is not as straightforward as most of the literature assumes. The meanings of these two key words in current development lexicon are explored and critically assessed. I argue that whether or not the rising prominence of these two words actually means the emergence of a new development agenda is a moot point. It critically depends on the understandings of these ambiguous terms. The thesis adopts a political economy approach. Combined with this is an awareness of the broader historical and socio-economic context in which citizen participation and decentralization take place. The thesis applies these ideas triangulating diverse research methods and data sources. It combines a literature review and documentary analysis, a survey conducted with municipal authorities and civil society organizations in the Eastern Cape as well as structured interviews with Ward councillors and with key informants. From a theoretical perspective, the study lays a foundation for understanding the relationship between development policies outcomes and the nature of citizen participation and decentralization in developing countries. This, in turn, provides a basis from which citizen participation and decentralization in South Africa can be assessed and understood. The thesis presents evidence from a case study of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. By revealing how different dimensions of decentralization and citizen participation operate and intersect, the findings demonstrate, that contrary to common knowledge, citizen participation and decentralization are frequently at odds. Moreover, contrary to frequent statements, the research also shows that opening new spaces for participation in decentralized local governance can result in fewer changes and disappointing results at best, undermining the transformative potential of the concepts of participation and decentralization.

- Description: Researchers have described human trafficking as a complex, multi-layered crime. South Africa, including the Eastern Cape Province, is a source, transit, and destination country for trafficked people. However, a dearth of research on human trafficking exists in the province. Furthermore, traditional, modernist research using reductionist methods to investigate complex phenomena has proven unable to capture the complex interrelationships between the myriad of interrelated elements inherent in complex phenomena. In this qualitative study, I explore and describe the human trafficking system in the Eastern Cape via participants’ perspectives through a complex systems approach that consists of two complementary theories, namely Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory of human development and complexity theory. The participants, who were knowledgeable about human trafficking in the province, were obtained through purposive and snowball sampling. Data collection took place through open-ended interviews with individual participants. I analysed the data according to Miles and Huberman’s data analysis process and Braun and Clarke’s thematic data analysis process. The findings demonstrate that the complex systems approach successfully facilitated the mapping and conceptualisation of an in-depth, multi-level picture of the complex interrelationships within and between multiple system components in the human trafficking system and its environment in relation to the Eastern Cape Province. Participants’ perspectives revealed two main themes, namely, the prominence of the nonlinear interactions between traffickers and trafficked persons in the holistic human trafficking system and the major obstacle regarding the lack of witness credibility for human trafficking prosecutions to be successful. Utilising complex systems theory to conduct further human trafficking research could assist counter-trafficking stakeholders with an alternative approach to generating effective planning and executing counter human trafficking strategies in a rapidly changing and increasing complex interconnected world.

- Description: This study examines the use of ‘cultural’ imagery and messaging as a tool to revitalise crucial national industries. Specifically, it examines the use of Wear Local campaigns in Ghana and South Africa as strategies to rejuvenate their textile industries and to make them viable in an increasingly competitive global market. Conceptualising Wear Local campaigns as possessing both cultural and economic imperatives, this study highlights how both factors contribute to making products of Buy Local campaigns marketable by showing their importance as both cultural and economic products. Using a descriptive-evaluative design, the study adopted a triangulated research approach comprising a survey, key informant interviews and document analysis. Survey questionnaires were administered to a total sample of 308 respondents in Ghana and South Africa. The qualitative phase of the study involved 10 key informant interviews (comprising textile labour unions, clothing designers, and government officials in both countries) and document/documentary research. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while the qualitative data were analysed using interpretive approaches, such as content analysis. The results indicate significant uses of national cultural elements in the campaign messaging in both Ghana and South Africa, as well as notable differences in the ways in which these campaigns resonated with consumers in the two countries. For instance, cultural differences accounted for high popularity of the campaign in Ghana and low popularity in South Africa. Following from these findings, the study concludes that the discourse on Buy Local and Wear Local, and the use of national culture in commerce, must go beyond the question of efficacy to examine the conditions under which these campaigns can become an effective economic/market tool. The study makes an important contribution to the existing knowledge on national culture, national economy and globalisation.

- Description: Seaborne cargo trade accounts for over 80% of the physical volume of global trade. Maritime transport thus fulfils an integral function in the economy of the world. South Africa generates approximately 3.5% of the world’s seaborne trade by value and 1.61% by tonnage; but the business of shipping all that cargo is undertaken by foreign firms. Operation Phakisa, the Comprehensive Maritime Transport Policy and the South African Maritime Road Map, in pursuance of the National Development Plan, aim to revive the commercial maritime sector. In order to meet the demand for the skills and innovative abilities sought at executive and managerial levels in the commercial maritime sector, higher education in the knowledge of maritime business is increasingly becoming a prerequisite. Investment in higher education of quality and relevance in the maritime field would contribute to achieving the goals of the government for harnessing the potential of South Africa’s blue economy. The literature is researched in order to establish an authoritative view that the knowledge and the inspiration for entrepreneurial activity in the maritime sector can be imparted through higher education; and for example, that a viable shipping sector can contribute to the growth of a country’s economy. The South African maritime sector is then described. The commercial maritime higher education available at universities and other institutions of higher learning in South Africa, as well as in other African countries and elsewhere in the world, is examined, in order to be able to identify the degree and diploma courses available. Maritime courses imply not only the content of the educational material, but also the method whereby the knowledge is instilled in learners, and which extends well beyond the classroom. A survey, by way of the personal interviews of leaders in maritime business, maritime government affairs, and academics teaching maritime topics, is then undertaken to ascertain their views on the education required to promote the maritime sector in South Africa, using the list of subjects available for study worldwide, to assist their choice. The literature research and the interview survey by design also enable the secondary aims of the study to be achieved. Those aims include determining how awareness of the maritime domain could be raised and how co-operation between academia, business and government, known as the triple helix could be organised, to promote the growth of the maritime sector. The results of the survey are analysed and tabulated, in order to illustrate the extent of the agreement between those interviewed and the conclusions reached. These conclusions establish: that the commercial maritime education currently available in South Africa, is inadequate to meet the aim of the government to the sector; that a post-graduate degree in the specified maritime studies incorporating a period of internship, and following on a first degree in business subjects, is required; that a triple helix of co-operation between academia, business and the government is essential to grow the commercial maritime sector in which South African entrepreneurs educated in such business will have the advantage; that greater awareness of the maritime domain is essential in South Africa if entrepreneurship in maritime business is to be cultivated; and that such awareness can be cultivated in various ways; but it should start by including more maritime topics in the current school curricula.

- Description: The purpose of this study was to explore the shared responsibilities between the police and the community on crime prevention. Various authorities such as Sir Robert Peel (1829), Sower (1957), William and Kelling (1982), Roelofse (2007), to mention a few, had been advocating community policing as an essential component of democratic policing. In an attempt to understand the shared responsibilities between the police and the community, a thorough literature review had been presented in chapter two. Through the intertwined approach of secondary data, explorations had been noted on the shared responsibility between the police and the community. Literature and theoretical review had been presented in the thesis to clarify critical aspects of the topic. Triangulation approach was adopted for the purpose of this study. The researcher triangulated, methodologies, sampling methods, data collection methods as well as data analysis methods. Using qualitative approach in Phase A, data was collected through structured interview, observation and content analysis which was thematically presented. The quantitative data (Phase B) was collected through structured questionnaire. In case of codding and analysis SPSS was utilised. The findings of the study in chapter six shows the shared responsibilities between the police and the community exist within Alice. Moreover, the findings shows that there is a need for community empowerment on human rights and its applicability.

Comparison of the population growth potential of South African loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) sea turtles

- Description: A beach conservation programme protecting nesting loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) sea turtles in South Africa was started in 1963. As initial numbers of nesting females were low for both species (107 loggerheads and 24 leatherbacks) it was proposed that the protection of eggs, hatchlings and nesting females along the nesting beach would induce population growth and prohibit local extinction. Today, 50 years later, the loggerhead population exceeds 650 females per annum, whereas the leatherback population counts about 65 nesting females per year. The trend for leatherback turtles is that the population has been stable for about 30 years whereas loggerheads are increasing exponentially. Thus, this thesis investigated several life-history traits to explain the differing responses to the ongoing beach conservation programme. Reproductive output and success were assessed for both species; it was hypothesised that environmental conditions are sub-optimal for leatherback turtles to reproduce successfully. It was ascertained that nesting loggerhead females deposit larger clutches than leatherbacks (112 ± SD 20 eggs and 100 ± SD 23 eggs, respectively), but that annual reproductive output per individual leatherback female exceeds that of loggerhead turtles (±700 eggs and ±448 eggs, respectively) because they exhibit a higher intra-seasonal nesting frequency (leatherbacks n = 7 and loggerheads n = 4 from Nel et al. 2013). Emergence success (i.e. the percentage of hatchlings produced) per nest was similar for both species (loggerhead 73.6 ± SD 27.68 % and leatherback turtles 73.8 ± SD 22.70 %), but as loggerhead turtles nest in greater numbers, i.e. producing more hatchlings per year, the absolute population growth potential favours the loggerhead turtle. The second factor investigated was sex ratio because sea turtles display temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) where extreme incubation temperatures can skew the sex ratio (i.e. feminising or masculinising a clutch). It was suspected that leatherback turtles are male-biased as this is the southern-most rookery (for both species). Further, leatherback nests are generally closer to the high tide mark, which might induce a cooling effect. Standard histological techniques were applied to sex hatchlings and a generalized linear model (GLM) was used to approximate annual sex ratio. Loggerhead sex ratio (2009 - 2011) was estimated at 86.9 ± SE 0.35 % female-biased; however, sufficient replication for the leatherback population was only obtained for season 2010, which indicated a 97.1 % (95 % CI 93.3 - 98.7) female bias. Both species are, thus, highly female-biased, and current sex ratio for leatherback turtles is not prohibiting population growth. Current sex ratios, however, are not necessarily indicative of sex ratios in the past which would have induced present population growth. Thus, to account for present population growth profiles, sex ratios from the past needed to be ascertained. Annual sex ratios (1997 - 2011) were modelled from historical air and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) but no significant change over time was obtained for either loggerhead or leatherback turtles (linear regression; p ≥ 0.45). The average sex ratio over this 15-year period for the South African loggerhead turtle was approximated at 77.1 ± SE 3.36 % female-biased, whereas leatherbacks exhibited a 99.5 ± SE 0.24 % female bias. Re-analysing data from the mid-80s by Maxwell et al. (1988) also indicated a 77.4 % female bias for the South African loggerhead population. It is, therefore, highly likely that sex ratios of the South African loggerhead and leatherback sea turtle populations have been stable for at least three decades and are not accountable for the differing population growth profiles as they are displayed today. Another possibility that could explain the opposed population growth profiles is the time taken for animals to replace themselves, i.e. age at maturity. It was suspected that age at maturity for the South African loggerhead turtle is comparable with that for leatherbacks. Using data from a 30-year mutilation tagging experiment (i.e. notching), age at first reproduction for South African loggerhead females was estimated. Results ranged broadly but a mean of 36.2 ± SD 7.71 years was obtained using a Gaussian distribution. Age at reproduction of the South African leatherback turtle was not determined but the literature suggests a much younger age of 13.3 - 26.8 years (Zug & Parham 1996, Dutton et al. 2005, Avens et al. 2009, Jones et al. 2011). Therefore, population growth would favour leatherback turtles as they exhibit a much shorter generation time. Finally, it was concluded that all life-history parameters investigated favour leatherback turtles, yet loggerheads are displaying population growth. However, as there were no obvious constraints to population growth on the nesting beach, it is suspected that population growth of the South African leatherback turtle is either unobserved (due to inadequate monitoring not capturing sufficient numbers of nesting events to establish a trend) or that population growth is prohibited by some offshore factor such as industrial fisheries (or some other driver not yet identified). Monitoring should, thus, be expanded and offshore mortality monitored as the leatherback population nesting in South Africa is still critically endangered with nesting numbers dangerously low.
