Thermoluminescence of annealed synthetic quartz: the influence of annealing on kinetic parameters and thermal quenching

- Description: The thermoluminescence of synthetic quartz annealed at various temperatures up to 900 °C is reported. Glow curves measured at 1 oCs−1 following beta irradiation to 40 Gy from a sample annealed at 500 °C and from an unannealed one consist of a prominent peak at 70 °C and secondary peaks at 110, 180 and 310 °C. In comparison, the glow peak from the sample annealed at 900 °C consists of three peaks but with the main peak at 86 °C and other lower intensity peaks at 170 and 310 °C. Kinetic analysis was carried out on the main peak only in each case. The order of kinetics of this peak was determined to be first order using various methods. The activation energy was evaluated as an average of 0.90±0.02eV for the unannealed sample and the one annealed at 500 °C. However, when the synthetic quartz is annealed at 900 °C, the activation energy decreases to 0.65±0.02eV. The main point of interest however concerns thermal quenching. It was noted that for the sample annealed at 500 °C as well as the unannealed one, the maximum intensity of the main peak decreases with heating rate. This phenomenon is associated with thermal quenching. When the same experiment is carried out using quartz annealed at 900 °C and irradiated to the same dose, namely 40 Gy, the intensity increases with heating rate. This would imply that this sample is not affected by thermal quenching. Using the notion that the radiative and non-radiative recombination routes are competitive, we repeated the experiment using a low dose of 3 Gy. In this case, the intensity decreased with heating rate showing that the process can be tuned. The activation energy for thermal quenching for the samples annealed at 900 °C, 500 °C and unnannealed one was found as 0.65±0.02eV, 0.82±0.02eV and 0.95±0.06eV. Evidently, annealing affects recombination processes in synthetic quartz.

- Description: In this article, we focus on patriarchy, women, land and livelihoods on A1 farms in Zimbabwe which arose from the fast track land reform programme. There is now significant literature on A1 farms in Zimbabwe. These studies include a number of ethnographic and comparative studies but this literature does not give sustained attention to patriarchy and women. In addition, though, a small number of works have appeared based upon a more focused gender analysis. We draw upon this more focused literature and offer fresh fieldwork evidence based on recent studies undertaken by two of the authors, in Goromonzi and Mazowe districts. At times, radical socio-spatial reorganisation such as fast track may destabilise systems of patriarchy. In the case of fast track, there has been a reconfiguration of relations between men and women yet this is uneven and contradictory and remains within the confines of patriarchal structures, practices and discourses. At the same time, women have manoeuvred and negotiated at local levels to enhance their lives and livelihoods.

- Description: The aim of this study is to explore the thermoluminescence properties of beta irradiated natural quartz annealed at 900 °C, that is, beyond its second phase inversion temperature of 867 °C. The sample was annealed to improve its sensitivity and to deplete any residual charge from electron traps. The glow-curve corresponding to 10 Gy shows three peaks when measured at 1 °C/s; a dominant one at 71 °C, the subject of this report, and two other ones at 125 and 177 °C. The dose response of the main peak was studied in the range 1–300 Gy. The activation energy of the main glow-peak was evaluated as ~1 eV. Kinetic analyses using various methods show that the main glow-peak follows first order kinetics.

- Description: Publisher version , Local level assessments of fuelwood preferences, demand and supply are important for ensuring a balance between ecological functions and livelihood needs. This study reports on an examination of fuelwood preferences, use and abundance in the #Khomani San resettlement farms in southern Kalahari, South Africa. The results show that Acacia erioloba was the most preferred fuelwood species, while Acacia mellifera was abundant but avoided. Across the study area, there were approximately 64 trees ha−1 but riverine sites had significantly more trees (approximately 80 trees ha−1) than non-riverine sites (48 trees ha−1). Live trees showed evidence of damage (cutting or breaking) and this was more pronounced in the riverine sites (close to human settlement) than in the non-riverine sites. However, overall current woody stocks and productivity rates of harvestable fuelwood are well above current fuelwood demand, suggesting fuelwood use may be within sustainable limits, though there is evidence of localised fuelwood depletion. The implications of these results for fuelwood management interventions, including the importance of context, are discussed.

- Description: The thermoluminescence glow curve of α-Al2O3:C consists of a prominent apparently-single peak and a number of weaker intensity secondary peaks. Phototransferred thermoluminescence (PTTL) from secondary glow peaks in α-Al2O3:C is reported. For completeness and to aid discussion, complementary results for the main peak are included. The problem studied is one of phototransferred thermoluminescence for a system of multiple acceptors and multiple donors. A TL glow curve recorded at 5 °C/s following irradiation to 0.5 Gy shows the main peak (labelled II) at 240 °C and two secondary peaks at 86 °C (peak I) and 360 °C (peak III). Peak I is reproduced under phototransfer after any preheating between 100 and 500 °C. Peak II is also reproduced as a PTTL peak after preheating to any temperature up to 800 °C. For the latter, the duration of preheating matters because if the sample is preheated at 800 °C for say, 6 min, PTTL is obtained but not when this is extended to say, 15 min. No PTTL was observed from peak III at all. A study of the time dependence of the PTTL intensity from peak III, following preheating that removes peaks I and II, shows that its electron trap acts as an acceptor when the duration of illumination to stimulate electrons from deep traps is brief but that when the illumination time is extended, the electron trap for peak III loses some of its trapped electrons to the shallower traps thus acting as a donor trap.

- Description: The tutorial system is considered to be a useful pedagogical intervention to improve student retention, particularly in the context of a first-year student’s experience of entering university. For these novice students to achieve academic success, it is important that they are given access to the subject-specific knowledge and practices in their different disciplines, that is, that they acquire ‘epistemological access’. A recent study of the tutorial system in a South African university (Layton, D.M. [2013]. A social realist account of the tutorial system at the University of Johannesburg (Unpublished doctoral dissertation). Rhodes University, Grahamstown), sought to discover to what extent tutorials were discursively constructed as being about the enablement of epistemological access. This paper focuses on two discourses that emerged from the study – the parent discourse and the partnership discourse. Both discourses were concerned with relationships between key stakeholders in the tutorial programme. Given that tutorials are considered to be spaces in which more intimate learning can take place than in the anonymous environment of the large lecture hall, an interrogation of the relationships fostered in tutorials is important. The parent discourse, in which students were positioned as ‘kids’ needing care, was supportive of new students but ran the risk of being patronising and reductionist. The partnerships discourse, in which tutors and academics were seen to be working together towards the common goal of student success, was seen to be enabling of epistemological access. But it required a commitment to teaching endeavours that was in tension with the institutional focus on research. Through a social realist analysis of the two discourses constructing relationships in the tutorial system, we conclude that these discourses have the power to both constrain and enable the extent to which the tutorial system can be a site of epistemological access.

- Description: This paper seeks to locate the place of hybrid courts in the Rome Statute’s complementarity model using the Central African Republic’s Special Courts as a case study. The introduction of the Special Courts when the International Criminal Court has already intervened in Central African Republic has raised some concern regarding the Special Courts relationship with the International Criminal Court, especially whether it may defeat the complementarity regime established under article 17 of the Rome Statute. This paper seeks to dispel this concern. It argues that the creation of the Special Criminal Court should never be perceived as an indictment to the Rome Statute principle of complementarity, but instead a useful attempt to close the impunity gap that has arisen as a result of the collapse or dysfunctionality of national criminal justice system.

- Description: Rare–Earth free luminescent materials are fast becoming important as the cost of rare earth ions gradually increases. In this work, a Rare–Earth free BaGa2O4 luminescent compound was prepared by solid state chemical reaction, which was confirmed to have a single phase by X-ray Diffraction. The Backscattered Electron image and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy maps confirmed irregular particle and homogeneous compound formation, respectively. The Photoluminescence spectrum displayed broad emission between 350 to 650 nm, which was deconvoluted into two components. The photoluminescence excitation peak was positioned at 254 nm, which corresponds with the band-to-band position observed from the diffuse reflectance spectrum. The band gap was extrapolated to 4.65 ± 0.02 eV using the Kubelka-Munk model. The preliminary thermoluminescence results indicated that the kinetics involved were neither of first nor second order. Additionally, the activation energy of the electrons within the trap centres was approximated to 0.61 ± 0.01 eV using the Initial Rise model.

In addition, when samples are annealed at temperatures exceeding 700 °C, the intensity of the radioluminescence increases with duration of annealing. The corresponding emission spectra show seven emission bands at 2.04, 2.54, 2.77, 3.04, 3.40, 3.75 and 3.91 eV. The change in dominant emission band with annealing is consistent with annealing-induced variations in lifetimes determined previously from time-resolved optically stimulated luminescence spectra in the same samples.

Rhodes possesses an admirable research milieu and culture that provides the space for intellectual development, debate, and the flourishing of ideas. As the smallest university in South Africa, we take special pride in Rhodes University having amongst the highest per capita research outputs. One of the core goals of a university is to produce knowledge, a public responsibility that Rhodes takes very seriously, and we continuously seek new opportunities to do so. Many of Rhodes University’s academics, departments, institutes, centres, and units are at the leading edge of research and are actively advancing knowledge in a range of disciplines and fields. During 2008, Rhodes launched three new centres. The DST/Mintek Nanotechnology Innovation Centre (Sensors) was founded under the directorship of Professor Tebello Nyokong; the Centre for Higher Education Research, Teaching & Learning, was formed out of a much expanded Academic Development Centre, under the leadership of the Dean of Teaching and Learning, Professor Chrissie Boughey; and the Centre for the Study of Democracy was launched under the leadership of Professor Stephen Friedman as a joint venture of Rhodes and the University of Johannesburg. A second DST/NRF South African Research Chair was launched in the field of Marine Biology, with Professor Christopher McQuaid as its incumbent. Rhodes’s first DST/NRF Chair, Professor Tebello Nyokong, in the area of Medicinal Chemistry and Nanotechnology, had an outstanding year, with accolades coming from a range of sources. She was officially recognized by the National Research Foundation as one of the most productive researchers in the country with 35 ISI indexed journal papers published during the year, an extraordinary achievement by anyone’s standard, and with a large number of additional accredited outputs by her and her group during the year. In the area of the creative arts, Mrs Janet Buckland of our Drama Department won special recognition as the recipient of the national Woman of the Year award promoted by Shopright-Checkers and SABC 2, in both the Arts and culture section and as the overall recipient. Professor Fackson Banda of our Journalism Department won the 2008 MISA (Media Institute of Southern Africa) Press Freedom Award. In the Geology Department, Professor Goonie Marsh was awarded the Geological Society of South Africa’s highest scientific award, the Draper Memorial Medal, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to geological sciences in general, and particularly for his research work in the petrology of volcanic rocks and igneous provinces in South Africa. The Vice-Chancellor's Distinguished Senior Research Award for 2008 went to Professor Peter Vale of the Department of Political and International Studies, for the national and international impact of his scholarly activities over a sustained period. The Vice-Chancellor's Book Award for 2008 went to Professor Dan Wylie of the Department of English, for Myth of Iron - Shaka in History (UKZN Press, 2008). Rhodes postgraduates continue to excel in winning prestigious international and local scholarships, including the Rhodes (Oxford), Mandela Rhodes, Flanagan, Commonwealth, and Fulbright. A major challenge facing South African Universities is the development of a new generation of teacher-scholars, one that Rhodes University has been engaging with for a number of years. We acknowledge the strong support of the Mellon Foundation, which has assisted us in creating a focused programme aimed at cultivating a new generation of black and women researchers, and in making a contribution towards transforming our academic body in the process. I am pleased to be able to announce that the Kresge Foundation has agreed to fund this initiative for a further four years. - Description: Colin Lewis was Professor of Geography at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa from 1989 until his retirement at the end of 2007. In 1990, with the strong support of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Dr Derek Henderson, he instigated the Certificate in Change Ringing (Church Bell Ringing) in the Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology - the first such course to be offered in Africa. Since that date he has lectured in the basic theory, and taught the practice of change ringing. He is the Ringing Master of the Cathedral of St Michael and St George, Grahamstown, South Africa. , The first ring of bells in Africa was installed in Grahamstown Cathedral in 1879 at the instigation of Frederick Henry Williams. Williams was Dean of Grahamstown from 1865 until his death in 1885. He was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, not far from Enniskillen, where an octave was installed in the Cathedral when Williams was an impressionable 12-year old. Grahamstown's bells were also an octave, cast by John Warner and Sons of London. They were hung in the newly built tower, designed by the English architect, George Gilbert Scott.

- Description: From Introduction: In 2010, the total subsidy earning accredited research output count for Rhodes University of 615.3 units represents an increase of 9% on the previous year. By far the major contributor to this growth was the significant increase in both PhD (37.5% up on 2009) and Masters by thesis students (34.5% up on 2009). Rhodes contributed 3.3% of all accredited research output in the public higher education sector in 2010 (0.1% up on 2009). With 1.9% of academic staff in the system, Rhodes retained its place amongst the top three most productive universities as measured by accredited publications per academic. Rhodes exceeds the DHET research output norm for universities by 53%. In 2010, the total accredited publication output count for Rhodes University of 325.33 units represented a decline over 2009 of 7.3 percent. This followed two years of steep growth during which accredited research publication output grew by 28%. Accredited publication output for 2010 consisted mainly of journals at 89.9%, with conference proceedings at 7.2% and books and book chapters at 2.9% making far smaller contributions. This mix is roughly in line with the sector as a whole. It has been recognised that books and book chapters are underappreciated in relation to journals, and recommendations to increase the weighted points that they attract as proposed by ASSAf1 are awaiting approval by the DHET. and book chapters submitted, because the hurdle of independent reviewing is not always met by the publishing avenues chosen by authors. The University has become increasingly reliant on research funding in recent years as a larger proportion of its budget, and attention at university council level is being given to ensuring that appropriate systems and support structures for researchers are in place.
