- Description: This study investigated the perceptions of teachers on inclusive education. Four sub districts in Eastern Cape Province were purposively selected and used as a case study approach. These assisted the researcher to enter the world of teachers (by interviewing SMTs and Office-Based educators/Inclusive Education Specialists). The Inclusive Education Specialist and SMTs ideas, suggestion and recommendations on inclusive education classrooms implementation were explored deeply. The research paradigm which the study adopted was qualitative, which centres on understanding the subjective world of human experiences. The qualitative research approach was adopted whereby interviews, observations of learners and their documents analysis were used to collect data. The findings of the study revealed that the all-Inclusive Education District of the sub-districts is between 9 and 10 years of experience implementing inclusive education instead of 17 years as stipulated in the WP6. It emerged that the involvement of SMTs in monitoring the Individual Support Plan (ISPs) in Public Ordinary School (POS) is not prioritized. There is more emphasis and involvement in Full-Service Schools since 2015. The findings further revealed that the teachers find it difficult to implement ISPs due to overload and overcrowding more especially in POS. All learners were declared as benefiting more when individual teaching is done, which is rare due to overload and overcrowding in both Full Service Schools and Public Service Schools. The study recommends that they should be extensive policy evaluation processes that should be done to measure the effectiveness of the Inclusive Education Policy. The perceptions and experiences of teachers should be captured and be utilized when evaluating the policy. The latter will not be achieved in isolation by teachers only, but with collaboration from learners, parents, community members and the entire education department in the Eastern Cape in line with the Ecological Systems’ theory. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Education, 2020

Significance of accuracy in the orthographical development of isiXhosa in a post-democratic South Africa

- Description: IsiXhosa language is one of the first languages in sub-Saharan Africa to be reduced into writing. The first written texts in isiXhosa were produced by British missionaries in the Tyhume river valley as early as 1824. In spite of these early developments, there still remain today many inconsistencies and anomalies with regard to the standardization of isiXhosa orthography that require attention. This research focuses on the status quo of the current orthography of isiXhosa which is used in the writing of the selected texts which were published from 2000 to date. The research study investigates how these texts are written, that is, whether they are written according to the principles of the writing of this language as developed by the respective language boards or not. The reason for doing this is that this language has become one of the official languages of the Republic of South Africa. Therefore, in order for it to be read and written without any difficulty by anyone, as it is expected to be used as a medium of instruction even at tertiary level in the future, it should be written accurately and consistently. The study analyses a number of isiXhosa written texts including the following: (1) Selected literary texts which were published from 2000 to date. (2) Selected publications by government departments. (3) Selected translated texts. (4) Some of the newspapers and magazines which are currently in circulation in this language. (5) Some dictionaries of isiXhosa. (6) The updated isiXhosa Orthography as compiled by the PanSALB (2008). The aims of the study are outlined in Chapter 1. This chapter also provides the theoretical framework within which the research is located. Chapter 2 is about the theoretical perspectives on the development of the art of writing and orthography. The historical background, that is, the development of the art of writing and the general as well as the specific requirements of a good orthography are discussed. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 observe and analyse the orthographical features of some written documents of isiXhosa such as writing of capital letters, word division, usage of concords, etc. These three chapters also observe and analyse the various anomalies and inconsistencies in the spelling of isiXhosa words that were identified in the consulted texts. A framework for continuing professional development of teachers in regular primary schools: towards the effective teaching of learners with special education needs in Zimbabwe

- Description: This study focused on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs of teachers in regular primary schools for the effective teaching of learners with special education needs in Zimbabwe. The motivation of the study emerged from concerns raised by stakeholders that teachers were inadequately prepared to teach learners with special education needs in general education classrooms. This study was underpinned by the post-positivistic paradigm which takes on both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study also employed the survey design, which utilised the mixed methods approach. The accessible population comprised 93 primary schools and 1 457 teachers, 93 school heads and all education officers in the Gweru District of Zimbabwe. The researcher used purposive and disproportional random sampling. Ten schools were purposively selected from a population of 93 schools in the Gweru District. One hundred and fifty teachers (10percent of the population) which translated into 15 teachers from each school, were selected from the 10 schools through disproportional stratified random sampling in order to include both male (n=69) and female (n=81) teachers in the study. Semi-structured questionnaires, semi-structured face- to- face interviews and focus group discussions are the data collection methods which were used in this study. Data were presented, analysed and discussed, starting with demographic data in the first section, followed by quantitative data which were presented concurrently with corresponding emerging themes from qualitative data. The data collected via the questionnaires were coded and key-punched for analysis. Data were presented in tables, bar graphs and pie charts. Findings of the study revealed that there is a dire need for knowledge and skills in SEN among teachers in regular schools. Teachers needed to be prepared for a paradigm shift of the inclusive era. Teachers also needed to identify their own needs to ensure that relevant and preferred areas were covered. Findings revealed that teachers preferred well-structured CPD which is facilitated by an expert and CPD held in their own schools, where good practices are shared with workmates. Findings also confirmed the availability of policy circulars in schools, although some teachers expressed that they were not aware of such circulars. There were no specific days allocated specifically for school CPD. Most teachers were not availed with the opportunity to attend out-of-school based workshops; and cascading of information led to dilution of original ideas. There was lack of adequate mentoring among qualified teachers. Teachers preferred the standards-based model for promotion purposes although it was limiting in terms of teachers’ learning. The training model was viewed as a productive way of quickly in-servicing teachers relative to its cost. The communities of practice model and transformative model were not being utilised in schools due to national policies that govern teachers. Findings also revealed that teachers faced major challenges such as funding of CPD, getting information on CPD opportunities and time to engage in CPD activities. Teachers reeled with a lot of pressure resulting in burn-out as a result of large classes. Although staff development meetings were held in schools, they were mostly administrative and nothing definite was being done to mitigate the challenges which teachers were facing in accessing CPD opportunities. Teachers opted for a CPD framework which would give them more information and more opportunities for CPD on SEN, better access to teaching materials and more opportunities to work with experienced practitioners in SEN. Teachers preferred a framework based on a variety of CPD models, more school-based CPD rather than out of school -based CPD. The researcher concluded that teachers in regular schools were not equipped to teach learners with special education needs in the mainstream. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education was not employing the best models in preparing teachers to be effective. Teachers were facing challenges such as, funding, unavailability of information and time in accessing CPD opportunities. The study recommends that The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education should put in place provisions to meet the CPD needs of teachers. Teachers should be fully involved in the identification of CPD needs. It was also recommends that school heads needed CPD on SEN for them to be able to guide teachers properly and to be supportive of the policy. Besides national policies, schools should design CPD policies specifically for their respective schools, in line with national policies. Andragogy principles, Wenger’s social learning theory and Vygotsky’s perspective among others, should underpin the CPD framework. - Description: Given the nature and devastating effects of HIV and AIDS and its impact on society, the universities in Zimbabwe have affirmed the need to define their institutional policy aimed at managing and mitigating the effects of HIV and AIDS. In this regard they have also put in place programmes to address the epidemic. Among the programmes are HIV and AIDS prevention programmes which are being implemented. However, there have been concerns that despite the fact that the programmes are being implemented as planned they have not met their objectives as HIV and AIDS infections have not decreased as expected. Hence this study assesses the implementation of HIV and AIDS prevention programmes in three universities in Zimbabwe. To achieve these objectives, the researcher opted for the mixed method methodology which is embedded in the post-positivist research paradigm. Post-positivist research paradigm attempts to increase our understanding of the way things are and that objectivity is an ideal that can never be achieved, and research is conducted with greater awareness of subjectivity. The researcher had to opt for questionnaires, interviews, document analysis and observations as data collecting instruments. From the Data presented the study found that universities lack adequately professionally qualified HIV and AIDS lecturers. Results on capacity of implementers in the study revealed that an insignificant number of lecturers have the capacity while the majority significant number lacked the capacity to implement the programmes. HIV and AIDS prevention is being implemented by unqualified lecturers who lack training and prerequisite skills for the programme. Furthermore, the study found that Lecturers do not get the necessary professional and institutional support to implement successfully HIV and AIDS programmes in universities. HIV and AIDS Coordinators and NGOs expressed concern over the inadequacy of learning and teaching support material. Funding and lack of resources such as specialist rooms and learning materials are a major impediment to successful implementation of HIV and AIDS. Implementation of HIV and AIDS programmes suffers from inadequate supervision by the relevant stakeholders due to unavailability of transport and financial cost. It also emerged that Human resource is also a major problem since there is a great staff turnover as specialist lecturers leave the system for better paid opportunities in the private sector. Most university lecturer respondents cited staff turnover as long-established and skilled lecturers look for greener pastures within and outside the country. The dominant methods used to implement HIV and AIDS programmes do not give enough room for group work discussions to effect behaviour change in students. Rather, more emphasis is on factual knowledge for assignments and examination purposes. On monitoring and evaluation of HIV and AIDS programmes, the study found that lecturers and students are unaware of their programmes progress bench marks. Universities have not been carrying out internal audits over the past years. This implies that the universities are divorced from Ministry of Higher Education Policy on monitoring and evaluation. Also, less people are involved in the monitoring process of HIV and AIDS programmes. The study found from the universities records that an HIV and AIDS Policy document exists at each university. However, the implementation of HIV and AIDS prevention programmes seemed to have a number of controversies and challenges. The study made the following recommendations against each major finding: Within the organisation, university works continually to equip staff with the knowledge, skills and tools required to analyse programme, implement and monitor interventions for HIV prevention. Capacity to support innovations includes aspects which hinder or support the implementation of new practices and ideas in the new curriculum. Universities should have trained HIV and AIDS Peer educators. For a lecturer to be considered as professionally qualified personnel in universities, the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education should stipulate possession of a Master‟s degree or a Doctorate. The researcher provided a section on contribution of the study to new knowledge whereby the researcher proposed an alternative model for HIV and AIDS implementation for universities in Zimbabwe. This model was derived after a thorough analysis of the findings from the study as well as an extensive literature review on the subject. - Description: Extract from Introduction: “In the cover bands I worked with, I used to do what all my colleagues in these bands were doing to learn and remember repertoire; transcribe “by ear” and then rehearse with the whole band. Later, when I joined “909” [a cover band named after the “909” model of drum-box developed and built by the Japanese company, Roland] I learned to extend that skill by notating my transcriptions and then playing from these self-made keyboard parts. All the instrumentalists in that band likewise played from their own notated transcriptions and, from that time onward it became rarer for me to do any kind of performance work without a set of self-made parts to read from or refer to. I had thus reverted to performing from musical notation. Even later, when I became involved almost exclusively in improvisational music performance, I never quite abandoned the notion of having notated keyboard or piano parts to hand, as a reference or guide. Since about 1990, I have led a life that has increasingly left pop music behind and instead embraced working with improvising musicians; those who wish to explore South African folk idioms in their compositional and performance output, as well as others who have a deep love of jazz music. At the same time, I have re-entered the realm of classical music and music-making; often through writing arrangements of my own music, which would incorporate classically trained players, as well as in response to commissions to compose [for particular musicians or groups of musicians] fully notated pieces of music – such as the works in this PhD portfolio. Yet, there are many circumstantial factors that feed into my composing, and exert an influence on my creativity. An analysis of orthographic errors in isiXhosa texts: a case of grade 11 isiXhosa home language (l1) in the Western Cape

- Description: This case study reveals that the written language of a group of Grade 11 isiXhosa first language (L1) learners presents errors which seem to have serious implications for their linguistic competence, performance in their learning, language development and language conservation. These errors include different regular language components, such as grammar, spelling, word division, punctuation, vocabulary, capitalization, syntax and semantics. Additional to these errors are the newly discovered categories of anomalies, such as new lexical items, incomplete words, incorrect word construction, inter-categorical range, multiple deviations and writing inconsistencies. The writing of these learners not only reflects various orthographic errors and inconsistency in their usage of isiXhosa, which translates into language deficiency, but also implies gaps within the education system and its policies, as well as inefficient isiXhosa curriculum design as some of the factors contributing to the existence of these errors. Possible causes of these errors include educational causes; lack of orthographic knowledge and limited reading, socio-cultural causes; interference of other languages and the influence of the media, and attitudinal causes; lack of respect and contempt for the language and lack of learner interest in the language. Adopting a combined mixed method with a predominantly qualitative approach, this study examines errors presented in the writings of Grade 11 isiXhosa L1 learners with a view to establishing the nature and scope of these errors. The key objectives of this study were investigated by means of scientific papers both published and publishable as book chapters, books, dissertations, education policies, online publications and journal articles - both international and accredited journals. Drawing on various conceptual and analytical frameworks (Hymes 1972; Corder 1981), the study scrutinizes the contents and presents observations of the elements and themes that emanate from the eighteen (18) learners’ isiXhosa essays and seven (7) voice-recorded isiXhosa teachers and subject advisers’ interviews which were used as data. Findings reveal that learners struggle to master some language aspects, with their usage reflecting serious deviations from the standard orthography. These findings have serious implications for language teaching and learning as these errors tend to affect the learners’ linguistic competence and performance, language development, as well as language conservation. Also, serious violations of the standard orthographic rules are noticeable; and this observation raises concerns about the fate and sustainability of the language. - Description: This thesis represents an experimental and intellectual journey of more than three years. The String Vibrator Experiment (SVE) is an experimental payload on the SumbandilaSat, satellite. The experiment was initially designed to compare low-earthorbitstretched string nonlinear dynamics with those found terrestrially, with particular emphasis on the effects of micro-gravity and near vacuum. Due to the damage of some internal components of the SVE, the terrestrial experiment had to be characterized by finding both transverse fundamental natural frequencies and the longitudinal system fundamental natural frequency. Forced and free vibration tests were performed on the SVE, with comparable results. The percentage frequency difference between measurement results obtained for the said natural frequencies was found to be acceptable. An analytical model for the string longitudinal system was developed using Energy Methods, assuming linear coupling of the stretched string and the flexible support. Bessel Functions were used to find the natural frequency of the flexible support, which is made of a thin-circular plate loaded centrally by the stretched string and fixed on its outer boundary. The natural frequency thus predicted, corresponds closely with that measured by Laser Doppler Vibrometry. It was found that the longitudinal system behaves in an uncoupled, manner. In this study use was made of piezo bi-morph sensors as vibration measuring devices, with promising results. A method called the peak amplitude discrimination method is introduced to find the respective resonant frequencies; this method is an adaptation of the sweptsine frequency method Nonlinear behavior of the SVE was found to exist exhibiting Sub-harmonics, Super-harmonics, Combination harmonics and Internal Resonances. - Description: In recent years, the concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems increased in status amongst policy makers, scholars, practitioners, and mainstream media as a regional economic development strategy. Yet, despite the opportunities presented by the entrepreneurial ecosystem, it is both under-theorized and lacks data on a sub-national scale. Furthermore, research from an African and sub-Saharan African context remains in its infancy. The limited research within these resource-constrained countries creates a challenge to determine the underlying factors that influence entrepreneurship. As a result, developing economies, as in the case of sub-Saharan Africa, have applied generalizations of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, which undermine the temporal differences of places and reduce the potential to benefit from agglomeration economies. With the National Development Plan: Vision 2030, the South African government strives to achieve an inclusive economy through enhancing the capacity of the state, building capabilities, and promoting partnerships amongst sectors. Motivated by the mandate to redress the inequality caused by economic exclusion, the South African government has taken counteractive measures focused on promoting entrepreneurship as a key driver of economic growth. Despite the measures placed, South Africa struggles with high levels of inequality with a Gini coefficient of 0.63, unemployment of 32.6% and negative GDP per capita growth of - 8.137%. Furthermore, most small businesses in South Africa are informal, which means that a disproportionate concentration of employment exists in the informal sector. Against this backdrop, the problem addressed in this study is based on the challenge of creating productive entrepreneurship that acknowledges the unique structure and resources of Nelson Mandela Bay. To address this gap, a critical inquiry into entrepreneurial ecosystems was motivated. First, the inquiry is focused on a real-world context, namely Nelson Mandela Bay, which is one of the eight metropolitan regions in South Africa, a developing economy. Second, the inquiry uses multiple perspectives through multiple data collection methods. To commence the inquiry, a literature review was conducted on secondary sources to identify the factors influencing entrepreneurial ecosystems and formed the basis of the theoretical framework. Opportunities and challenges for socio-economic transformation in rural Zimbabwe

- Description: The focus of the thesis is the impediments of rural development in Zimbabwe and how opportunities for socio-economic transformation can be enhanced in the current setting. The study embarks from a conceptualization of rural poverty in Zimbabwe using theoretical and empirical evidence. Poverty in rural Zimbabwe has a historical legacy of deprivation and dispossession and is concentrated in communal areas which have low resources bases with low agriculture potential due to low rainfall and poor soils. The myriad of challenges in rural Zimbabwe point to the incoherent of rural development polices which are distorting markets for inputs and produce. Thus the study sought to address the rural development policy bottlenecks and develop a policy agenda for development.Using mixed methods approach, the study considered household economic conditions, their production practices and their vulnerability contexts in three selected districts which represent communal, old resettlement and small scale A1 and A2 areas. The household data is blended with interview data of rural development practitioners in both private and public agencies to produce comprehensive information on the impact of rural development policies. Archival research method was also used to do content reviews on government policy papers and programs so as to provide a holistic approach to analysis. Naturally mixed methods produce large volumes of data which requires thorough analysis. This was only possible through the use of analytical computer software packages for qualitative and quantitative data such as Atlas Ti and Excel spreadsheet, respectively. The study revealed that rural households in Zimbabwe are farmers. The majority of these farmers are smallholders who are located in remote communal areas and resettlement areas. Communal farmers constitute the bulk of rural citizens and live on less than a dollar a day. They are engaged in mixed farming methods and other non-farm activities especially during off-agriculture season. Communal households basically produce staples, with a low percentage producing cotton and groundnuts. Production choices and methods are shaped by subsistence needs of households but more so by risks and vulnerability contexts which they operate in. Farmers in resettlement areas face a different set of opportunities and threats to their livelihoods as they are located in prime agricultural land. However they are still challenged with the rural development approaches of central government. On the policy front, there is no pronounced rural development policy in Zimbabwe. The current setting has numerous pronouncements and programs which all seek to alleviate underdevelopment in Zimbabwe. These programs are replicating each other in practice and in most cases benefit the political elites and large scale commercial farmers. The multiplicity of government institutions which deal with rural development results in incremental decisions and programs which further impoverishes rural households. The study posits a rural development policy framework which is based on a comprehensive policy agenda which takes into cognizance the production requirements of households. Such a policy needs to be inclusive to the rural households in terms of governance and programs. A rural development policy agenda and framework would require the harnessing of resources from both the government and private players in well-articulated market friendly approaches. This would stimulate high productivity, enhance off-farm activities, raise incomes and foremost create appropriate social protection programs. - Description: In most South African schools, there is a transition period, where lower primary learners receive instruction in their mother tongue from grades 1-3 and from grade 4 onwards, English becomes the medium of instruction. This study explored how learners in primary schools in Grade 4 learn through the medium of English, since IsiXhosa is their home language and they come from a community of pre-dominantly IsiXhosa speakers where English is seldom heard or spoken. The study is concerned with the language and literacy practices at this crucial transition, and investigated to what extent learners in the Grade 4 have learnt / been taught / have developed sufficient basic inter-personal communication skills, BICS, (Cummins, 2000), in isiXhosa to make the switch to learning all subjects in English. The theoretical frameworks adopted for this study was Cummins Language theories. Within this study an interpretive paradigm aligned with the qualitative approach and the case study design for understanding the phenomena, were adopted. The study covered three primary schools which were purposively selected. The participants comprised of six female teachers teaching Life Skills in Grade 4 from five mainstream schools were also purposively selected. Semi structured interviews, observation and document analyses were used as data collection instruments. A qualitative thematic approach was used for data analyses and the emerging results were organised into different themes reflecting participant’s responses. The findings revealed that teachers did not use lesson plans as they have indicated. Even though literature emphasises the importance of lesson planning, teachers find it tedious to plan. It was established that no assessment tasks were done when the lesson was concluded. Effective teaching without valid and reliable assessment tasks would result in meaningless teaching and learning interactions. It was revealed that teachers used teaching aids, but only a few. The information demonstrated that teachers did not code switch to assist with learner understanding. Instead, they presented their lessons in English which hampered learning. The study discovered that teachers used the old traditional style of teaching, instead of learner-centred instruction, which is interactive and participatory. The study exposed that the biggest challenges learners encountered, was the language of teaching and learning, English. However, the findings established that learners where unable to understand and express themselves in English. English lessons had minimal learner participation, because learners did not have the necessary competence and English was not their home language. The study further revealed that the English language leads to a barrier of effective learning and placed learners at a disadvantage. The findings further suggested that a lack of resources had an impact on teaching and learning which affected learners’ acquisition and understanding of the medium of instruction. The findings claimed that slow and progressed learners exist in classrooms and need individualised and specialised teaching. It was found that parental involvement, translation, learner participation, group work and teaching aids assisted with the challenges teachers encounter during transitioning in the subject Life Skills. It is recommended that the school develop a structured programme to provide support and assistance for teachers with lesson planning. Assessment task should be included in each lesson and should be viewed as an essential part of teaching and learning. Teachers should make use of multiple and a variety of teaching aids. Code switching and translation should be used, as it assists with understanding, accuracy and clarity. An appropriate mix of teaching styles should be used, to reach all leaners in a classroom. Teachers can improve learners English, by incorporating learners’ home language, code-switching and teaching aids in class. Slow and progressed learners could be assisted by using a variety of teaching materials, individual attention, remedial education, peer tutoring, differentiated teaching and curriculum adaptation. A structured learning support programme providing learning support for learners with barriers to learning, can be utilised. It is recommended that parents be involved in their children’s learning. The schools should set up effective monitoring and support mechanism for teachers in order to ensure that quality teaching and learning takes place in schools. Regular monitoring and evaluation by the DoE might assist to support teachers. A suggested framework of strategies in Life Skills, based on the findings of the study and extensive literature review, should contribute and assist with transitioning in Grade 4 in schools. , Thesis (DPhil) -- Faculty of Education, 2021

- Description: A shift towards fully mechanized forest activities, such as harvesting and, more recently, silviculture, has occurred from the early 2 000’s. The reason for mechanizing these activities differs for each country, although for most countries there is concern relating to the health and safety of forest workers. With mechanization in harvesting, the forest worker has moved away from the physical intensity of having to fell, debranch, debark and cross-cut trees into logs using either an axe or chainsaw, to operating a machine. Studies revolving around the human element (operator) have been conducted specifically relating to the ergonomics of the machines and how operators may influence machine productivity. Results showed that due to the repetitive nature of the work, the operators are exposed to associated stresses for longer periods. Typical injuries associated to these kinds of stressors are whole body vibrations (WBVs), repetitive hand and arm movements, non-neutral body postures and manual lifting, which lead to musculoskeletal symptoms in the lower back, neck and shoulders. However, as machine technology improves so does the ergonomic conditions which are experienced by machine operators. Machine productivity can be influenced by various factors, with the most influential being tree volume. However, a recent study showed that over 40% of variation in machine productivity has been observed amongst different machine operators operating similar machines. The specific reason for these differences has yet to be determined. However, decision making, motivation, planning capacity, concentration, memory, motor coordination, pattern recognition, logic reasoning, and spatial perception are abilities that have been described as important for successful harvesting work. The pre-selection of operators using psychometric and cognitive tests is not new to forestry, although very little information is available relating to the aptitude test known as the Vienna test system as well as the best possible demographic associated with successful harvesting operators. The overall aim of this study was to determine whether the high variation found amongst harvesting machine operators could be reduced initially through a preselection process which involves the use of aptitude tests (Vienna Test System) and demographic questionnaires. Emerging Job Categories and Competencies Informing Talent Strategies for Industry 4.0 Automotive Organisations

- Description: The emergence of Industry 4.0 is impacting the world of work and brings along new job categories that require new competency sets. The global shortage of skills is aggravated by the emergence of Industry 4.0 which is set to perpetuate the war for talent with talent being a main driver of business success. The South African automotive industry, being the largest contributor to the country’s GDP and the second largest employer in the country, needed to effectively manage talent to stay relevant and survive in a highly competitive labour market. Given the above, this research investigated emerging job categories and competencies required by automotive organisations for informing Talent Strategies in the context of Industry 4.0. To attain the purpose of the study, a literature study was conducted that explored the evolution of industry and the nature of Industry 4.0 with its associate technologies. A main part of the literature study was dedicated to identifying emerging job categories and competencies associated with Industry 4.0, with specific emphasis on identifying a hybrid competency set. The literature study was supplemented by data mining, semi-structured interviews and an online survey which, in turn, ensured a triangulation approach. Firstly, data mining was employed by consulting scientific and web-based sources to uncover trends in job advertisements relating to emerging job categories and competencies required in Industry 4.0 automotive organisations. Secondly, 30 semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts in the fields of HRM, production and engineering in automotive organisations, to gather their thoughts and views on the extent to which their organisations experienced Industry 4.0, and the influence of Industry 4.0 on both job losses and job creation, competencies employees required and Talent Strategies adopted to ensure the supply of relevant talent. The results from the interviews were qualitatively analysed with the extraction of themes. Lastly, a self-administered online survey was administered to HRM professionals, line-managers, and production professionals in automotive organisations through snowball sampling with 162 usable questionnaires returned. Factor analysis and Cronbach alpha coefficient were utilised to successfully validate the scales used in the study, with technical skills revealing two distinct factors, and Talent Strategies revealing three distinct factors. The results provided evidence of technical, conceptual, human and personal skills required by automotive organisations in the context of Industry 4.0. A high level of differing responses was noted for Talent Strategies, and specially for retention strategies. - Description: This study aimed at evaluating chemically the pesticidal and antioxidant activities of Tithonia diversifolia Hemsland Tephrosia vogelii Hook f. In the study, the composition of essential oils and non-volatile substances was evaluated by modern analytical tools. The essential oils were characterised using Gas chromatography GC mass spectrometry mass spectrometry GC MS MS, GC and multivariate techniques. While phenolic compounds of T. diversifolia were comprehensively characterised using Ultra high performance liquid-phase chromatography coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer with electrospray ionisation UHPLC ESI MS MS. Both the essential oils and non-volatile components of the plant materials were evaluated for repellency, fumigant toxicity, contact toxicity and antifeedant potential in either a choice or no choice experiments. The non-volatile substances were evaluated for antioxidant properties. Using activity-guided isolation, three known compounds, a one pimarane diterpene type compound; sandaracopimaradiene-1α,9α-diol, a sesquiterpene lactone; deacetylviguiestenin and a caffeic acid derivative; 3 4 O caffeoyloxy methyl 2-methyloxirane-2-carboxylic acid were obtained from T. diversifolia. The compounds were characterised by spectral methods; 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance NMR, Fourier transform Infra-red spectroscopy FTIR and mass spectrometry MS. Characterisation of essential oils revealed three chemotypes that were found to grow at different places of eastern Uganda. Based on the profiles of the compounds of the farnesene family, results showed that farnesol was a major constituent in the oil of chemotype 1 while springene compounds β-springene and α-springene and the β-farnesene were widely expressed in chemotype 2. The third chemotype was a mixed hybrid of both farnesol and the springene chemotypes. In all the chemotypes, alkylbenzenes; o-xylene, m-xylene and ethylbenzene were in huge amounts as other significant components in the oil. 1,4- dihydroxy-p-menth-2-ene, 5,9-undecadien-2-one, 6,10-dimethyl, and 3-cyclohexen-1- carboxaldehyde,3,4-dimethyl were other most significant chemical constituents of the three chemotypes. The presence of chemical variation in the components of T. vogelii essential oil showed that the fumigant and repellency efficacy of this plant against Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky were undermined. However, all the chemotypes of T. vogelii essential oil could show repellence and fumigant toxicity against S. zeamais. The comparison between insecticidal and repellent effects of the essential oils of chemotype 3 of T. vogelii with that of T. diversifolia was done. Results indicated that the former could be promoted more for contact toxicity effect while T. diversifolia better suits fumigation effects against S. zeamais. Investigation of the feeding deterrence of both volatile and non-volatile substances of T. diversifolia leaves revealed that its essential oil did not show significant antifeedant activity at a dose of 0.29 μL mg of flour disks. The crude extract, some fractions and the isolated compounds demonstrated feeding deterrence activity against S. zeamais. The feeding deterrence index of sandarac copimaradiene- 1α,9α-diol was 81.19 5.94 percent at 0.1percent w w 1 mg g food compared to 97.45 0.43 percentage for Neemazal extract 10 percent azadirachtin positive control at 10w w 100 mgg food. The EC50 of deacetylviguiestin, 3 4 O caffeoyloxy methyl 2 methyloxirane 2 carboxylic acid and azadirachtin commercial antifeedant against S. zeamais were 22140.23 9103.29, 3654.28 2715.09 and 14.59 5.59 ppm respectively. Although these compounds showed less activity against S. zeamais than azadirachtin, their antifeedant activities were very significant and can be valuable alternatives. UHPLC DAD ESI-MS MS characterisation of fractions of T. diversifolia led to the identification of 7 novel hydroxycinnamates; 4-O 1 O caffeoylglucosyl quinic acid, 4 O caffeoyl 2 hydroxy 3 methylbutanoic acid, 4-O-caffeoyl-2-hydroxybutanoic acid, 3,4 dihydroxyphenyl-4-O-caffeoyl-2-hydroxybutanoate, 4-vinylphenyl 4 O caffeoyl 2-hydroxy 3 methylbutanoate, 4 O caffeoyl-caffeoyloxymethyl 2 hydroxy 3 methylbutanoate, 4 O-caffeoyl 2 2 3,4 dihydroxyphenyl acetoyloxy 3-methylbutanoic acid from T. diversifolia leaves that had not been previously reported in nature. Their structures have been assigned based on the unique MS MS fragmentation patterns for each of the compounds in a switching negative or positive ionisation mode and deduction from 1D 1H and 13C NMR of similar compound. In total, 55 phenolic compounds from aqueous fractions of T. diversifolia have been identified including 4 hydroxybenzoic acids, 19 hydroxycinnamic acids, 22 flavonoids, 1 saponin triterpenoid and 9 coumarins and furocoumarins. The present study further showed that the DPPH radical scavenging effect and reducing power antioxidant activity of tested samples of T. diversifolia showed a moderate correlation with the phenolic content present in these samples. - Description: South Africa is one of the most productive areas for ericaceous plants with about 850 identified species in the Cape Floral Region. The Albany Centre of Endemism where all fungi used in this study were isolated from, falls within this region. Ericaceous plants interact with some fungi via an association called the ericoid mycorrhizal (ERM) association. All fungi used in this study were isolated from roots of six ericaceous plants; Erica cerinthoides, Erica demissa, Erica chamissonis, Erica glumiflora, Erica caffra and Erica nemorosa. Fungal enzymes are known to play a significant role in the food, brewing, detergent, pharmaceutical and biofuel industries. The enzyme industry is among the major sectors of the world, and additional novel sources are being explored from time to time. This study focussed on amylases (amyloglucosidase, AMG), cellulases (endoglucanase) and xylanases (endo-1,4-P-xylanase) production from ERM fungal isolates. Out of the fifty-one (51), fungal isolates screened, ChemRU330 (Leohumicola sp.), EdRU083 and EdRU002 were among the fungi that had the highest activities of all the enzymes. They were tested for the ability to produce amylases and cellulases under different pH and nutritional conditions that included: carbon sources, nitrogen sources and metal ions, at an optimum temperature of 28°C in a modified Melin-Norkrans (MMN) liquid medium. Cellulase specific activity of 3.99, 2.18 and 4.31 (U/mg protein) for isolates EdRU083, EdRU002 and ChemRU330, respectively, was produced at an optimal pH of 5.0. For amylase, ChemRU330 had the highest specific activity of 1.11 U/mg protein while EdRU083 and EdRU02 had a specific activity of 0.80 and 0.92 U/mg protein, respectively, at the same pH with corresponding biomass yield of 113, 125 and 97 mg/50 ml, respectively. Increased enzyme activities and improved mycelial biomass production were obtained in the presence of supplements such as potassium, sodium, glucose, maltose, cellobiose, tryptone and peptone, while NaFe-EDTA and cobalt inhibited enzyme activity. ChemRU330 was selected to determine the consistency and amount of amylase, cellulase and xylanase formed after several in vitro subculturing events. AMG and endo-1,4-P-xylanase were found to have the most consistent production throughout the study period. The AMG was stable at 45oC (pH 5.0), retaining approximately 65% activity over a period of 24 h. The molecular mass of AMG and endo-1,4-P-xylanase were estimated to be 101 kDa and 72 kDa, respectively. The Km and kcat were 0.38 mg/ml and 70 s-1, respectively, using soluble starch (AMG). For endo-1,4-P-xylanase, the Km and Vmax were 0.93 mg/ml and 8.54 U/ml, respectively, using beechwood xylan (endo-1,4-P-xylanase) as substrate. Additionally, crude extracts of five root endophytes with unique morphological characteristics were screened for antibacterial properties and was followed by determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). L. incrustata (ChemRU330) and Chaetomium sp. extracts exhibited varying degrees of inhibition against two Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The crude extract of L. incrustata was the most effective which was found to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus (MIC: 1 mg/ml), Bacillus subtilis (MIC: 2 mg/ml) and Proteus vulgaris (MIC: 16 mg/ml). The L. incrustata displayed potential for antibacterial production and could be considered as an additional source of new antimicrobial agents in drug and food preservation. Also, the three isolates used for enzyme production were identified to genus and species levels, i.e., Leohumicola incrustata (ChemRU330), Leohumicola sp. (EdRU083) and Oidiodendron sp. (EdRU002) using both ITS and Cox1 DNA regions. The molecular analysis results indicated that these ERM mycorrhizal fungi were similar to those successfully described by some researchers in South Africa and Australia. Therefore, this study opens new opportunities for exploring ERM fungal biomolecules for the bio-economy. The promising physicochemical properties, starch and xylan hydrolysis end- products, and being non-pathogenic make AMG and endo-1,4-P-xylanase potential candidates for future applications as additives in the food industry for the production of glucose, glucose syrups, high-fructose corn syrups, and as well as the production of bioethanol. The impact of exchange rates on trade balances in SADC countries

- Description: This study aims to determine the impact of exchange rates on trade balances in SADC countries. Further, the study also aims to determine the existence of the J-curve phenomena in SADC countries. To achieve the objectives of the study, a panel GMM model and quantile regressions were used as a method of data analysis on data covering the period of 1993 to 2018. Panel GMM model and quantile regression were used to determine the relationships between the real exchange rate (XR), world income (WGDP), as well as gross domestic product (GDP), and trade balance (TB) of SADC countries. The SADC countries used in this study are South Africa, Mauritius, Lesotho, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, DRC, Madagascar, Namibia, and Botswana. To provide a conceptual framework for the study, a comprehensive theoretical and empirical literature review was undertaken. Within the framework of the theoretical literature review, Magee’s (1973) J-curve phenomena were tested for its relevance and application within SADC countries. Given the main highlights of the empirical literature review, this J-curve phenomenon as well as the impact of trade balances in SADC countries, has not been addressed optimally. The main focus of previous studies in this area within SADC countries has fallen short of explaining the nature and causality of J-curve phenomena. It is in this respect that this study contributes to the regional and international trade discourse. The main findings from the quantile regression analysis in this study suggest that no evidence of "J-curve" in the case of Angola, Namibia, Mozambique, Malawi, and Madagascar. South Africa shows a delayed J curve. Lesotho an inverted J-curve, whilst DRC and Botswana show a sharp V-shape. Contrary to the "J-curve" phenomenon, as explained by the classical textbooks, the findings of the study suggest that the depreciation of Namibia, Mozambique, Angola, Malawi, and Madagascar’s exchange rates produce no J-curve phenomenon, indicating that there is no room for improving these countries’ trade balances through a currency devaluation process. Yet for countries such as South Africa, DRC, Botswana, and Mauritius the findings suggest that the depreciation of these countries’ exchange rates improves the trade balances. Concerning GMM results, the exchange rate and gross domestic product in SADC countries had a positive relationship with the trade balances in SADC countries. Further, the exchange rates also show evidence of a positive relationship with trade balances. On the contrary, the world income (represented as world GDP) has a negative relationship with trade balances in SADC countries. This implies that, as SADC currencies strengthen, the trade balance worsens. This finding presents a serious open macroeconomic challenge in SADC countries, in that the trade balances worsen irrespective of the strengths of the currencies; hence the trade balances in SADC countries have remained negative for prolonged periods. Furthermore, the world economic growth does not necessarily improve the SADC countries' trade balances either, as shown by a negative relation between world income and trade balances in SADC countries. This finding concerning world GDP, suggests that SADC countries lack export diversification and are trapped in primary product exports which, at times, are subjected to low prices. Given the above findings, it is clear that SADC countries will continue to suffer from negative trade balances, which in turn will continue to stifle their growth. To address the continued and persistent trade balances in SADC countries, policymakers should focus on an integrated open macroeconomic strategy. Such a strategy should pay special attention to improving technical skills, research, and development, quality of exports, export diversification, infrastructure; maintain the use of flexible exchange rate regimes, raise the level of productivity; substitute imports of capital equipment and support domestic industries. Furthermore, it is recommended that SADC countries focus on attracting and retaining foreign direct investments. Development and in vitro biological studies of polymer-based wound dressings with a high haemostatic ability for the management of wounds

- Description: Wounds are usually accompanied by complications such as excessive bleeding and bacteria invasion. The design of wound dressings that rapidly stop excessive bleeding and inhibit bacterial invasion is crucial to promoting accelerated wound healing. To meet the abovementioned requirements in wound dressings, topical gels were prepared from sodium alginate SA and carboxymethylcellulose CMC. The wound dressings were loaded with an antifibrinolytic agent, tranexamic acid TA, essential oils, and a variety of metal-based nanoparticles, and carbon-based biomaterials. The scanning electron microscopy SEM and X-ray diffraction XRD confirmed the successful formation of the nanoparticles. The prepared formulations exhibited in vitro drug release kinetics that best fitted with the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. These gels exhibited good spreadability and viscosity, showing a shear-thinning behaviour with pH between 6.7 and 7.3, signifying suitability for skin application and ease of application. The prepared topical gels exhibited significant antibacterial effects against gram-negative and gram-positive strains of bacteria. SA EO-based formulations showed high antibacterial activity across all bacterial strains, followed by SA-based formulations compared to CMC-based formulations, which exhibited moderate antibacterial activity. Moreover, the prepared gels showed good cytocompatibility, promoted cell proliferation, and exhibited 80 percent wound closure on day 3 compared to the untreated group, which showed a 38 percent wound reduction in vitro. Excellent blood clotting properties were observed with CMC-based gels compared to other formulations. However, all the prepared formulations exhibited outstanding blood clotting ability compared to the control, showing that they can promote rapid blood coagulation. In this research, two types of polymer-based scaffolds were formulated and evaluated as effective formulations for the treatment of chronic wounds: sponges and topical gels. Sponges were formulated from cross-linking of gelatin and PEG. Ag nanoparticles and metronidazole were incorporated into the sponges to improve their antibacterial activity. Topical gels were loaded with essential oils and Ag nanoparticles and prepared from CMC and poloxamer. The prepared sponges and topical gels were evaluated using various analysis and characterization techniques. SEM/EDX, FTIR, and TGA were employed to characterize gelatin/PEG hybrid sponges followed by porosity, in vitro biodegradability, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial studies. FTIR, SEM/EDX, and TGA confirmed their physicochemical properties and successful fabrication of sponges loaded with metronidazole and Ag nanoparticles. The sponges were biodegradable, indicating their capability to induce skin regeneration. The drug release studies showed a rapid release of metronidazole 28.32-71.97 percent from the sponges over the first hour, followed by a sustained drug release. The Ag nanoparticles were released in a sustained manner, suggesting that these sponges can rapidly destroy bacteria and inhibit persisting bacterial infections as well as protect the lesion bed from further bacteria infections. The in vitro antibacterial studies of sponges displayed superior antibacterial activity against most of the Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria strains commonly found in chronic wound infections with a MIC value of 15.625 μg/mL. In vitro cytotoxicity experiments revealed excellent biocompatibility with a percent cell viability of more than 70 percent. The in vitro wound scratch healing assay exhibited that the sponges encapsulated with only metronidazole promoted high cell migration than the dual drug-loaded sponges and untreated cells, suggesting its potential to quicken the wound healing process. CMC/Poloxamer topical gels were also characterized by FTIR, followed by pH, viscosity, spreadability, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial studies. FTIR showed successful preparation of CMC/Poloxamer topical gels loaded with essential oils and Ag nanoparticles. The topical gels exhibited pH in the range of 5.20-6.68, spreadability between 5.4 and 5.9 cm, and viscosity ranged from 216 to 1200 cP at 50 rpm and 210–858 cP at 100 rpm. The in vitro drug release studies demonstrated that Ag nanoparticles were released from the topical gels in a sustained manner. Most formulated topical gels demonstrated superior antimicrobial efficacy against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria strains than the blank gel and controls. The cytotoxicity analysis displayed more than 90.83 percent cell viability for the topical gels, revealing excellent biocompatibility. The outcomes revealed that the topical gels enriched with essential oils lavender and tea tree and Ag nanoparticles and sponges incorporated with metronidazole and Ag nanoparticles are potential wound dressing scaffolds that can be employed for the treatment of chronic infected injuries. The in vitro wound healing experiments showed that the HaCaT cells cultured with gels co-enriched with lavender oil and Ag nanoparticles possessed a higher rate of closure in comparison to the untreated cells for 96 hours. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 2022

A multiple case study exploration into community members’ ecopsychological responses to environmental degradation in South Africa

- Description: The psychological impact of environmental degradation in South Africa and its impact on communities’ relationships to the natural world is an understudied area. This study’s main aim was to explore community members’ reactions and responses to different forms of environmental degradation in South Africa by analysing two case studies: Rustenburg in the North West province and Limpopo province’s Vhembe District. The qualitative case studies relied on emplaced individual and focus group interviews. The findings from this study are presented in this doctoral thesis by publication. The first case study of Rustenburg in the North West’s platinum mining belt was selected due to the extractive industry’s historical impact on the natural environment, which is interlinked with the identity and heritage of host mining communities who could be considered land and environmental defenders. Two publications have been published on this case study. The first article, Critical reflections from South Africa: Using the Power Threat Meaning Framework to place climate-related distress in its socio-political context, was published in the British Psychology Society’s Clinical Psychology Forum Special Issue: Psychology and the Climate and Environmental Crisis in August 2020 and provides a critical reflection on psychological distress in Rustenburg, and questions whether popular terms used, such as “climate anxieties”, are useful for communities confronted by ecological crises. The paper concludes that there is danger in the dehistoricisation and medicalisation of distress that is rooted in climate, land and environmental injustices. The paper sets the scene for papers to follow that examine the interrelationship between place attachments and psychological responses to environmental degradation associated with slow violence. The second article, ’Nothing green can grow without being on the land’: Mine-affected communities’ psychological experiences of ecological degradation and resistance in Rustenburg, South Africa, was published in Community Psychology in Global Perspective Special Issue: Communities reclaiming power and social justice in the face of climate change and presents a broad overview of psychological responses to ecological degradation associated with environmental injustices. The paper suggests that psychological distress is attributed to environmental injustices. Furthermore, the process of place severing – the psychological threats, harms and disruptions to place-based dialogues – contributes to distress experienced in extractive settings. The two articles in this case study concluded by demonstrating how community resistance plays a part in addressing cumulative ecological harms and restoring the ancestral relationship with place. The second case study in the Vhembe District was selected due to the community’s psycho-spiritual connection to the sacred sites in the area and the histories of environmental degradation in the area. Article three, ‘Mupo is life’: Intergenerational community identity and safeguarding of sacred natural sites is in press in the journal Ecopsychology. The paper found that place plays a role in shaping and transferring intergenerational community identities. Furthermore, Zwifho shape worldviews about Mupo, i.e. all of existence, that underpin land and environmental defenders’ responses to environmental degradation and place severing. The fourth article, “Restoring roots”: Lived experiences of place severing and dialogical resurgence associated with deforestation and land dispossession in Limpopo province, South Africa, is under review by AWRY: Journal of Critical Psychology. The article demonstrates that place severing is rooted in histories of colonialism and that distress is related to losses and cumulative ecological harm. Furthermore, the article shows how decolonial dialogical resurgence responds to the mechanisms that drive place severing. The fifth and final publication, Grounding community psychology in ecopsychosocial accompaniment, is a chapter that explores opportunities for community psychologists to accompany others, specifically in relationship with people who have experienced displacement and environmental justice struggles. Collectively, these four articles and book chapter present the first publications of a larger research study that spans two South African case studies and that should yield several more publications. These publications draw on critical psychologies, including decolonial theory, liberation psychology, critical community psychology and radical ecopsychology. Within this thesis, the journal articles and book chapter are consolidated by an overarching discussion chapter that situates these five publications within the context of existing literature, and describes how existing theory and methodology have been advanced. The study demonstrates the interconnectedness between histories of colonialism, land injustices and environmental degradation that contribute to intergenerational psychological distress. Grassroots community organising groups play a critical role in addressing the resulting cumulative environmental harms through place-based resistance and dialogical resurgence. Moreover, the study suggests that critical psychologies have important roles to play in supporting land and environmental justice struggles through critical research, evaluations and assessments, and litigation. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, 2021

Evaluation of antimicrobial combination therapy options for the management of integron-mediated multidrug resistance in enterococcus species and acinetobacter baumannii from aquatic environment in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

- Description: Infectious diseases caused by multidrug-resistant MDR pathogens, such as Acinetobacter baumannii and Enterococcus spp., is an increasing worldwide problem. For treating these diseases, antibiotics are usually the first choice. But organisms develop resistance as a result of drug abuse, continuous use of antibiotics and release of antibiotics into the environment. These have prompted MDR's development, making even the most active drugs ineffective. Transposons, plasmids and integrons are the most effective mobile genetic elements that promote acquisition and spread of resistance determinants. Integrons carrying various arrays of resistance gene cassettes are principally helpful for epidemiological studies of these disease-causing organisms. Alternative treatments, such as using drugs in combination or with adjuvants and nanoparticles therapy, have been documented. Nanoparticles have the potential requirements for qualifying as antibacterial agents. In addition to their antimicrobial activities, nanoparticles can be used together with antibiotics for more enhanced antimicrobial activity In this study, Acinetobacter baumanni, Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis were recovered from the aquatic environment in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa with a standard microbiological method. Their antibiotic sensitivity testing was carried out using Kirby Bauer disk diffusion and microdilution methods. A high occurrence of class-1 integrons was discovered in MDR A. baumanni, with the internal variable containing aadA1, aadA5 and aadA2 genes, which confer resistance for streptomycin and spectinomycin, aac 6Ib for amikacin/ tobramycin and dfrA17 genes for trimethoprim. Similarly, class1 integron was detected in Enterococcus, without the presence of gene cassette. The checkerboard assay and time-kill assay were used to test for the effect of the combination of the antibiotic. The impact of colistin combined with quinolones (ciprofloxacin) with the Fractional inhibitory concentration index FICs 0.31 indicated synergistic effects against MDR A baumanni. However, when colistin was combined with meropenem and ceftazidime, additive effects with FIC, ranging from 0.52 to 1 were observed. In addition, a combination of gentamicin MIC 4 μgml with vancomycin MIC 256 μgml antibiotics against vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis showed antibacterial activity. In contrast, the combination of ciprofloxacin 1 μgml with Ampicillin 16 μgml antibiotics against Enterococcus faecalis showed a bacteriostatic effect. The initial inoculum declined by 100 percentage when gentamicin was combined with vancomycin at a concentration of 4 and 128 μgml MIC respectively, for about 2 h following the treatment for MDR E. faecium. Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus Polymerase Chain Reaction ERIC PCR analyses of the studied pathogens revealed great genetic diversity, suggesting the various sources of environmental contamination. Silver nanoparticles AgNPs and zinc oxide nanoparticles ZnO NPs were chemically synthesized using a precipitation method and characterized using energy dispersive Xray analysis EDX, scanning electron microscopy SEM, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopic analysis FTIR and transmission electron microscopy TEM. The characterization results showed the synthesis of 43.37 nm and 21.03 nm nanoparticles of zinc oxide and silver origins, correspondingly, with distinct morphology, as revealed in TEM. The size, stability and functional groups of the nanoparticles produced were revealed using EDX and FTIR. Zinc oxide nanoparticles were cytotoxic against Vero cell lines at the tested concentrations, whereas AgNPs had no cytotoxic effect at lower concentrations. Acinetobacter baumanni, Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis were with MIC in the range of 0.0390.078mgml for silver nanoparticles. Zinc oxide nanoparticles were explicitly active against Enterococcus species gram-positive with MIC of 1.25 5 mgml. Both studied nanoparticles exhibited profound synergistic and additive activities against all the investigated MDR pathogens. These findings demonstrate good antibacterial potential of the nanoparticles against drug-resistant strains and open a new arena of antimicrobials for medical treatment. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 2022
